Okay, this is going to be a pretty short review, because we were only down for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday. It was so quick, in fact, that I hardly feel like DH were actually there - so naturally that means I wish I was going again soon. ;)
In addition to DH and I, my mother and step dad came up to celebrate with us for a day, so you'll get to see what they ate, and we also met up for a dinner with two of our friends, so you get their opinions as well.
Also, we weren't on the DDP this trip. We have an AP and just bought the Dining Experience, so we figured out that we actually wound up saving MUCH more money by going this way, instead of using the Dining Plan. Go figure!
I'm going to get started on our first meal in the next post - lunch at Beaches and Cream. Hope you enjoy!
I'm in!! Looking forward to it!

We got to our hotel (the Boardwalk Villas) and checked in by 11:00 Saturday morning. My parents were driving up from Ft. Meyers and staying at the Dolphin, so they checked in around the same time, walked over and met us in the lobby of the Boardwalk. We all decided we were hungry and walked over to the Beach Club before we headed out to the Animal Kingdom for the day.
This was such a perfect day - seventy and sunny, a light breeze, NO HUMIDITY! I can't remember the last time I was in Florida and there was no humidity! Plus, coming from NJ where it was icy and 30 degrees made it THAT much better. :goodvibes
When we got to Beaches & Cream we were seated immediately - there were maybe two other tables/booths filled. I love this place. Of course the ice cream is good, but the burgers are fantastic, too!
My mom got the turkey sandwich:
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1677.jpg
This is described as 'thinly sliced, roast turkey topped with lettuce, tomato, and pickle served on a multi-grain bun $7.99' She got it with a side of fruit. There was a lot of turkey piled on this thing, and she said it was good, but she wished she would have noticed the wrap she saw someone else get or the soup on the menu before she ordered this, because she would have chose them instead. I tried the fruit, and it was good, but not completely ripe. Oh well!
DH, step-dad and I all got the cheeseburger:
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1678.jpg
Described on the menu as 'juicy beef patty served on a fresh baked bun topped with lettuce, tomato and pickle. Served with french fries or fresh fruit. Single $7.89; double $9.89'. DH and I both got ours with American Cheese, while my step dad got his with Cheddar. OMG, was this fantastic. As usual. It's a burger, but it's made to order and it's not dried out like the CS burgers can be sometimes. It's nice and juicy and the cheese is melted so perfectly. And the fries were perfectly crispy - just the way I like them! I thought they had enough salt on them already, but my step dad poured on tons more.
I also got the coke with vanilla syrup in it ($2.48) - delicious! And DH got a Vanilla Malt ($4.99), which he completely finished, on top of his coke and his burger and fries. I seriously don't know where the guy puts it. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pictures of either of these.
Our waitress was Darlene, and she was wonderful. She spent a lot of time joking around with us, as well as taking time to explain the difference between a malt and a milkshake to DH, as well as showing my mom and stepdad exactly just what a kitchen sink is. Needless to say, they were amazed!
I don't have the price totals for this one, because my parents were nice enough to pick up the tab for lunch for my birthday! But you can get an idea from the prices I listed above from their menu.
I'll get the next review up in a little bit, but I am going to try to get some actual work done before lunch. :lmao:

So! When I left off we had just finished at Beaches & Cream and were spending the day at Animal Kingdom. We spent about 5 hours there, where my parents rode Everest for the first time and then spent AWHILE lounging at the Dawa Bar sipping rum runners. I love these babies. When we were there in September they were off (too sweet and too much pulp) - and I could hardly finish one, nevermind more than one. This time, the recipe was perfect again! So fabulous. Unfortunately, I didn't think to get a picture of them. We were all just relaxing and listening to the drummers and enjoying our drinks that it never entered my mind that you all would like seeing them. But trust me! Next time you are in the AK, head to the Dawa Bar and get one of these - they will not disappoint!!!
Okay, on to dinner! After an excrutiatingly long bus ride back to the Boardwalk, we had an ADR at Spoodles. I haven't eaten here since I was about 14 (and I hated it back then), so I decided to give it another chance.
I went for a glass of Sangria to start:
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1704.jpg
Now, we all know what Sangria is. The menu describes it as 'blend of red wine, brandy, triple sec, orange juice and fresh citrus fruit -- Glass $7.50'. I hate red wine. If I drink even one sip I will have a massive headache the next day. Why did I think I would LIKE this!?! I don't know - they just describe it so well, it sounds so YUMMY. So I thought, 'Disney waters down their drinks, I'm sure this won't taste so much like red wine, but more like the fruit juices.' Negative. All you could taste was the wine, and it dried out my mouth with every sip. I could only manage to finish about half the glass. Normal people who like red wine will love this! Me - not so much. :headache:
We were going to get an appetizer, but our server, Jason (who was excellent, by the way), told us about the bread he was bringing out, so we decided against it.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1705.jpg
This was fabulous! I'm glad we didn't order another appetizer, because we all only wanted to eat this. The bread was Rosemary Focaccia, and it was big and fluffy and served cold. The dipping sauce was olive oil with olive tapenade in it. I believe there was cut up olives (duh!), carrots, celery, garlic and something else. It was very savory and a little sweet, with a hot 'finish'. Just wonderful! We even had Jason bring us out a second dish of it because we were going through it so fast.
Now, the entrees. Both my step dad and I had the Wood-grilled Pork Chop - with white bean cassolet and tarragon-chive pistou $22.99
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1706.jpg
I thought this was alright. The pork chop was HUGE and very dry, so add to that my dry mouth from the sangria and I could hardly swallow - I must have gone through three glasses of water. I love cassoulet, too, and this wasn't bad, but surprisingly, I make a MUCH better version (from Weight Watchers no less!) at home. My stepfather, on the other hand, loved the dish and polished the whole thing off. To each his own! :hippie:
My mom got the
Pan-Fried Chicken Cutlet - served with shaved Serrano ham, fennel, and arugula salad with lemon-white balsamic vinaigrette $17.99
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1707.jpg
I don't think she liked this. She said it had no flavor at all, and I even watched her dump salt and pepper on it four separate times. My mother NEVER uses salt, and usually yells at people who put it on their food (like it affects her somehow), so I know it definitely must have been bland to warrant all of that seasoning from her. She only ate about half of it.
DH had the
Oak-fired Steak Kabobs - with multigrain pilaf, balsamic red onions and harissa $22.99
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1708.jpg
Here is your first review from DH! He is a man of very little words, which you will see throughout this report. He thought the steak was 'really good and tender.' I tasted a bite and noted there was a VERY strong cumin taste - I like cumin so I didn't mind, but if you don't like it, this is NOT the meal for you! He also said that the rice was 'ok - not good, not bad' and that he thought it was just plain rice. :confused3 LOL
We opted not to order dessert because DH and I had checked into our room just before dinner and he surprised me with having a cake delivered for my birthday!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/47b8dc33b3127cceb575d9f58c290000006.jpg
So we were all dying to get back to that cake. He ordered yellow cake with vanilla icing (I hate chocolate). :scared1: It was delicious. They even brought it with a candle and matches so you can sing happy birthday for the person. I thought that was a cute touch, because not many hotels outside of Disney do that. Anyway, I do have to note that there was A LOT of icing, and it was VERY sweet - almost too much. Now, I love lots and lots of SWEET icing on my cakes and cupcakes, so it must be very sweet to almost turn me off. But still, an excellent dessert, and I definitely wasn't sorry we had this instead of a dessert at Spoodles.
All in all I thought Spoodles was alright. I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon because there are so many other restaurants on property that we LOVE and so many we still want to try, but it's not on my 'never again!' list. My parents treated us to this dinner, too, so unfortunately I don't have the total cost, but I can tell you that we used our DDE card for 20% off the entire meal (alcohol too. Woohoo!!!).
Up next - our day at Epcot and 'eating around the world'...

I was disappointed, too - I had heard so many good things about this restaurant! And it's not necessarily that it was bad, I think I just order the right things. There were a few appetizers on the menu that looked really good, so the next time we get there, I will probably order one of those.

Hi
Great reviews thsoe burgers look wonderful!

02-20-2008, 03:18 PM
This was a LONG day! I woke up insanely early and sat out on our balcony looking over the Boardwalk, taking pictures for awhile. I then made DH get up and get moving so we could make it to Epcot at opening. No reports for breakfast this morning - we ate some granola bars and cupcakes (Yes, cupcakes for breakfast are not only acceptable, but EXTRA DELICIOUS, for breakfast on vacation! Didn't you know?) my mom had brought up for us. So the cupcakes were meant to be dessert the night before, but all her thoughts of that went out the window when she saw that cake, so instead we ate them for breakfast, and when I told her, she started laughing and said, 'I cannot believe you are eating those at 8 am...' :confused3
Anyway, I must tell you now, I have failed you, fellow Disers. I don't know exactly what happened, but towards lunch time I started to feel a little 'off', so I wasn't concentrating on eating as much as I was thinking 'I need to go back to the room. Now. I need to sleep!'. So when I had the bright idea to 'snack around the world' for lunch instead of going to our usual Electric Umbrella, I had every intention of coming back with TONS of pictures of all the wonderful treats we consumed. Instead, I have reviews of five, and no pictures. I am so disappointed in myself!
Our first stop was before we even made it out of future world. It was just before 11, but we were starting to get hungry when we stepped off of Soarin', so we made a quick pit stop at Sunshine Seasons to split a muffin. These things are HUGE, and would easily be a great breakfast for one person - if you split it like we did, it's a great snack. We chose the Poppy Seed Muffin. It was delicious! It was big, moist and yummy. The sugar crystals on the top were my favorite part - made it just a little extra sweet. I'm thinking I wish I had one of these right now...
Next we wandered to Mexico where we were deciding if we wanted a margarita at the moment. A quick word on these - they used to be my favorite! In fact, one time, about 4 years ago, I was craving one so badly that I actually began planning a trip for two months from right then just so I could go down and get one. They were THAT good! :thumbsup2 But over the past 3 years or so I've noticed a complete decline. Used to be that they were so strong that drinking half of one would make you nice and tipsy. Not so anymore. They reduced the amount of alcohol in them and now they are overly sweet. Drinking an entire one not only doesn't get even the slightest bit buzzed, but instead you will wind up with a horrible stomach ache, all the while wondering exactly *why* they keep raising the price. Even so, I still usually must get one, on the off chance that they have returned my beloved margaritas to their full splendor. I'm still waiting... Anyway, there we are in Mexico, around 11:15ish, debating on whether it's TOO early to start drinking alcohol. Do we really want to be THOSE guests? Yes, we do! It is after all, vacation, and my birthday to boot! We stroll up to the kiosk (because of course we're the only ones there) and imagine my shock when instead of the Kiwi flavor, there is now instead a Green Apple flavor. Green Apple margarita!?! Sign me up! I actually got the fiesta margarita (which is a layering of all four flavors they offer - lime, strawberry, mango, and now green apple) minus the mango (because it's so overly sweet that I think this is what produces the stomach ache) with sugar on the rim. DH got a lime with salt on the rim. Still not back to 'normal'. We joked that next time we should buy a little bottle of Jose from inside the Mexican pavillion and mix in into our margaritas... Oh well, I will keep having these in hopes they return to their original splendor.
Next we stopped into Kringla Bakery in Norway to get something into our stomachs, but I was starting to feel odd, so nothing jumped out at me. We wandered until Germany, where DH got a Bratwurst and I had a large pretzel. He said the Bratwurst was very good - it was completely loaded with sauerkraut, and he ate every last bite of it. I loved the pretzel I had. I wonder why I don't have these all of the time. Well, I'll tell you, it's because up here (NJ/NY area) we can get pretzels on the street of Manhattan or at our sporting events. They are always a little bit stale and TOO hard on the outside, while hardly being chewy on the inside. Then they are either overloaded with salt to the point you can't eat it without scraping it all off, or it has no salt to be found on the thing. That is why I have avoided these wonderful German pretzels for so long. Well, no more! This was a fabulous pretzel! It was soft (inside AND out!) and had a hint of a buttery taste that was so wonderful, you didn't even need to use mustard on it if you didn't want to. Plus, there was a bit of salt sprinkled over the pretzel - just the right amount where there was no scraping necessary, nor were you left wishing your dough had some flavor to it. Also, it was huge. I had to give some to DH to finish, which I was VERY upset about doing. So, moral of this long story - stop in Germany and get yourself a pretzel!
It was about this point that I decided I couldn't take it anymore - I had to get back to the room and lay down rightthissecond! So we made a plan that we would take a 30 minute nap and come right back to Italy where we left off. Normally we would have just went back to the room and relaxed until I felt motivated to get up again, but because we only were there for the weekend we decided this was the plan. Not the greatest of plans, but there you go. When we finally got back into Epcot I was still feeling miserable, but I trudged on. DH decided that if we stopped at the kiosk in France and got me the Pomegranate Kir, everything would be solved. Who am I to argue? I love these things - Champagne with pomegranate liquer. You cannot go wrong! Except this time - I think the bottle must have come straight off the shelf and didn't have time to chill, because the drink was so warm. But I am NOT going to waste champagne, so I drank the whole thing. Of course it didn't help me feel better, but what can you do? We went back to Italy as per our plan, and wandered around WS.
When we reached France, I felt like I was hungry, but was still feeling pretty crummy. So I sat on a bench in the back watching Sleeping Beauty and Marie (from Aristocats) doing meet and greets while DH went to the Patisserie to get some croissants. Wow, were these things HUGE! Now, unfortunately, my stomach had decided that although it was empty and probably STARVING at this point, there was no way it was going to consume anything at that point. I had literally one bite and then let it sit there on the bench until DH threw it away. :sad1: I do remember thinking it was a bit on the greasy side, though. DH had gotten himself a Ham & Cheese Croissant, which he said was very good. I saw that it was a white cheese (not American) melted all over it, but since my stomach was being stupid, I didn't get to taste any, so I'm not sure exactly what kind it was. It did look delicious, though.
We did some more wandering and eventually made it to the Rose & Crown. This used to be my favorite restaurant until they went and changed their menu, now I only go for the pub. It's such a fun place to hang out and have a few drinks! My favorite is the Strongbow Cider that they serve, that I cannot for the life of me find around here, so it is a must for me on every trip. So we eached grabbed a beer (me with my cider, my DH with his Boddingtons) and shopped around England then went out back to wait for the British Invasion to begin. Now, this cider must have some magical properties, because by the time I was half way done, I was feeling better.:worship: Not just better, but perfect, as if nothing was ever wrong with me. Which was a relief, cause it was almost time to for dinner with our friends at Chefs de France. Got to love that British cider!!!
Well, thank you for letting me ramble incessantly. I will get to dinner at Chefs in my next installment. And there are plenty of pictures, I promise!!!

i come from england and in my student days used to drink strongbow cider a lot (and i mean A LOT ) but instead of drinking it straight i used to ask for a shot of blackcurrant. its known as cider and black over here and it makes it go down even better. dont know whether the rose and crown would accommodate this but its worth a try

Strongbow is great to me because the usual ciders we can buy around here I find just a little too sweet. So that means drinking more than two or three leaves your stomach feeling a little gross. Not at all with Strongbow! I'm going to have to remember to ask R&C if they will do it with a shot of blackcurrant for me to try. It sounds great!

We have an authentic Irish Pub that opened up here ~ a year ago. My 22 yo nephew oh so kindly recently introduced me to Strongbow (he is house/dog sitting for us next month and I'm making sure I have some on hand for him :rolleyes1 ). I LOVE IT :worship:, and I am not a "beer person" by any means, especially in the winter. It is soooooo good!! I was so in love with this wonderful beverage that I went to the company's website to try and find out if I could buy it locally. You basically send them an email with where you live and...... wala a liquor store here (right across the street from the Irish pub ironically :lmao: ) sells it   . For 4 pint cans it is $9.95 and oh so worth it. So try contacting them to see if you can find it locally. I'm sorry you got sick. I HATE being sick at Disney. It should be against the law. DH and I ate at Spoodles several years ago and were not impressed. :lmao: The Kitchen Sink is great! About two years ago I had first told my DH about it and how if one person finishes it by himself in under an hour, he gets it for free. Well, DH was convinced HE COULD DO IT!!!! Yeah, right. So on our last day of the trip we go there and I get the burger and he only gets his kitchen sink. They do the whole thing - blinking the lights, the applause, the speech. He sits down to eat it and is all excited. Then a half hour later it's only half gone, and is a soupy mess. His face was priceless - he looked absolutely miserable. So he concedes defeat, we pay, and as we walk out the door, he goes, 'We need to go back to our hotel. NOW.' When we got there he just layed on the bed moaning about his stomach ache. :rotfl2: Big baby! This past trip, though, my parents asked Darlene if she has had anyone finish it by themselves and she said that very recently she had a guy in there finish it in 9 minutes. Nine minutes!?! That is insanity!!!
I want to thank you all for reading along. I'm having a good time writing this, and it's helping with the 'post Disney Blues'. But I wanted to let you know I'm not going to get around to posting another update until Monday. :sad2: I'm having people over today, so I have to clean. :scared1: And I've only just realized I left my notebook with my notes on the food at work. So I'm sorry, but I promise to get the update in on Monday - have a great weekend!

Alright, I am back! Sorry for the delay in the reviews, but I know you'll enjoy this one. Like I mentioned, we met friends for this dinner, so you lucky readers get two addional reviews. AND it's going to feature comments from our own Ms.Tom-Morrow 25, because it was her and her husband joining us for dinner! So readers, hang on to your hats and glasses, 'cause this here's going to be the wildest review on the boards. he he he Okay, not really, but it's going to be long. :thumbsup2
I last left you as the British Invasion were ending, and as the crowd gets up and rushes out, DH and I were left scanning the crowds looking for the Morrows (which is what I am going to call you now instead of saying 'our friends', it just sounds more fun! :rotfl: ) We find each other and Ms. Morrow and I start jumping up and down and screaming, and basically making everyone around us think we were nuts. Which, lets face it, we can be!
We wander from England over to Chefs, put our name in, and wait about three minutes to be called. We're led to a table for four, one row over from the windows. Imagine my disappointment when I look outside and realize it's too dark to see anything. BUT, if it was light out, we would have had an excellent view!
Now, The Morrows were on the DDP, while we were not. We let our server, Elodie, know up front, and also that we would BOTH be using our DDE cards. She said fine, we were all on the same page, and off she goes to give us a moment to look over the menu.
We decided that the DDP be damned and ordered appetizers anyway! Who are they to tell us what to order? :cool1: Ms. Morrow ordered the Tarte a la Flame Alsacienne - Alsace specialty. Flatbread baked with cream fraiche, onion and bacon $8.50
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1716.jpg
She was so nice, and shared it with the whole table. As you can see, we *almost* forgot to get a picture of this one! Now, DH and I had eaten at Chefs once before in 2005 and I really didn't think it was that great. We came back here only because it was IMPOSSIBLE to get a reservation at Coral Reef, which is where I really wanted to eat. I had gotten this appetizer back in 05, and was NOT impressed with it at all. In fact, I thought it was disgusting, so I was hesitant to try this, but it was MUCH better than last time. The bacon was very thick and not crispy the way I like it, but it was still surprisingly delish. I do remember it being a little sweet in flavor. Now, here is Ms. Morrow's review:
"I am here to let you know what I thought of the food!! First off, whatever that appetizer we had was, I thought it was great!! Bacon, onions and cream?? How can you beat that? I think I could have eaten the whole thing by myself! Mr. Morrow is not a huge bacon fan and he thought it was just "OK"."
I had the Bisque de Homard - Lobster bisque $6.25
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1717.jpg
Now, one small consolation after not being able to go to the Coral Reef was that Chefs had lobster bisque on their menu. The bisque at Coral Reef is my favorite soup ANYWHERE, so I was glad to see that I would at least get to have a bisque for dinner. Luckily, it was delicious! Still, it was not nearly as good as Coral Reef's, which is much creamier than this one, but it was still very tasty and will not disappoint!
For my entree I got the
Gratin de macaroni - Baked macaroni with cream and gruyere cheese $17.95
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1718.jpg
I have to admit - I saw a picture of this on the food porn thread and fell in love. Don't you just want to drool over this dish? That picture is actually what made me book here after finding out we couldn't get CR. I have to report that it was good, but 'different'. Very different from what we know as 'mac and cheese'. The cheese is baked and melted all over the top, and there was no sauce on the bottom, so the noodles down there were just plain. I guess the French don't make a 'sauce' for their mac and cheese, and instead just put the cheese all over the top and bake it that way. :confused3 The gruyere cheese used was yummy, but just so strong and different from what I was expecting. I'm not really sure if I liked this dish. But I'm not really sure if I didn't like it. The jury is still out, and one day I will have to go back to try it again!
DH had the Plat de Cote de Boeuf au Cabarnet sur un lit de polenta - Beef short ribs braised in Cabernet on a bed of polenta $26.95
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1719.jpg
He said they were cooked very well - nice and tender. He was surprised by the cabernet sauce, since every other place he eats short ribs they are always in some kind of BBQ sauce, but he did like it. He said the polenta was 'weird' and I have to agree. I tried it, and it wasn't creamy and flavorful like the kind he gets at the CA Grill. It was very bland and 'mushy', so he didn't eat much of that.
Ms. Morrow got the
Filet de boeuf grille, sauce au poivre noir Gratin Dauphinois et haricots verts - Grilled tenderloin of beef with a black pepper sauce original potato gratin of Savoy and green beans $31.95
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1721.jpg
It looked yummy to me, and she ate all of it. I did get to try a bite of the mashed potatoes that came with it, and oh.my.god. were they delicious!!! Absolutely amazing. They were creamy and had a hint of a cream cheese taste to them. Here is her review:
My entree was the beef tenderloin w/black pepper sauce, potatoes gratin and french green beans. I enjoyed this entree as a whole. But the potatoes were definitely a standout, so good and creamy. The steak was good, cooked a perfect medium rare as requested. But when it came down to it. . .it was a steak, there wasn't anything really special about it. I only ate about three of the beans. . .they were ok for green beans I guess, as you know I do not like veggies that much!
Mr. Morrow got the
Demi poulet fermier roti, pommes puree au basilic et tomate braisee - Half of an all natural roasted chicken, basil mashed potatoes and braised tomato $24.95
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1722.jpg
I actually didn't take any notes on what Mr. Morrow said about this, so here is Ms. Morrow to fill us in:
Mr. Morrow enjoyed his half chicken. He too said that there was nothing really special about it and he like the chicken he has gotten at Le Cellier much better. Oh, and he HATES tomatoes. So I think it turned him off a bit to have those tomatoes on his plate.
We all know the best part is next - Desserts! Who does dessert better than the French? No one, I tell you. No one. I am the only one who was different in their choice of dessert. I chose the
Assiette de Sorbets du jour et son palmier - Daily assortment of fresh sorbets served with an elephant ear
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1723.jpg
This was fabulous! The three flavors were raspberry, strawberry and lime. The raspberry was the sweetest of the three, while the lime was the lightest. All three were absolutely delicious, as was the elephant ear, which was nice to chew on - it really gave substance to the dessert.
DH and the Morrows (they could be a singing group! :rotfl2: ) all got the Profiterolles au chocolat - Puff choux with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1724.jpg
There was no way I was touching this with all that chocolate poured all over it. But Elodie saw my birthday pin and brought out DH's profiteroles with a candle and a chorus of French waiters in tow and they all sang 'bonne anniversaire' to me. What is a better way to celebrate one's birthday than to be serenaded by a group of French men? I was in heaven! And Elodie was very sweet and felt bad that she couldn't bring them out with my own dessert, but the candle would have melted my sorbet. Hey, as long as I got the French waiters, what do I care what dessert it came out with!?!
Anyway, since I didn't taste any of these myself, I will share that DH said he 'liked it a lot'. Elodie had also mentioned that these were the most 'French' dessert on the menu. Here is Ms. Morrow's review: We both had the profiteroles (sp) for dessert. I really liked these a lot. I love creme puffs (even though there was no cream involved!) I thought the little shells were really tasty. The chocolate sauce was delicious!! And you can't go wrong with ice cream. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. I don't think I would return though.
I was actually much more impressed with Chefs this go around than I was back in 05. When we were there that time it was VERY busy - we waited outside for over a half hour before we were called to be seated, and our waiter had seemed very rushed and just a little on the 'rude' side. This time, there was no wait at all, our meal was paced perfectly, and Elodie was a good waitress. Not to mention that I thought the food quality improved greatly. I know we'll be back in the future, although I'm not sure how soon. There are so many other restaurants we'd like to try before we put this on our list again. It was a good time, but not something that stood out so much it has to be on our 'must do' list.
Now, I have to forwarn you all, I am going to write a second post now about our issues with the DDP - I didn't want to write it here because it has nothing to do with the review of the restaurant, as much as it will be a 'Why did Disney have to go and screw up the DDP' post. Stay tuned!
Prinny27
02-25-2008, 01:47 PM
Alright, we all know that Disney has screwed up our beloved DDP. Why do they think it's still beneficial for us to take away the appetizer, take out the included tip and only decrease it by ONE DOLLAR? But I digress, because this will not (completely) be another rant about how we now hate the DDP. Obviously we weren't using it this trip because we found we saved well over $50 more for this quick weekend getaway than we would have if we used the DDP by using the DDE card. No, instead, this post is merely an observation about our experience watching the Morrow's use the DDP at Chefs and how absolutely confusing it was.
If you'll notice in my Chefs review, I stated that at the very beginning of our meal when our waitress came to our table, we told her how the Morrows were on the DDP, while DH and I were not. We told her we'd need separate bills. We told her we were BOTH using the DDE cards. We were all supposedly on the same page.
Then the bills come. Mine and DH's were perfectly fine and we have no complaints. It was a different story for the Morrows. :sad2: I will try to make this on the shorter side, and just say that the Morrows should have gotten two bills - one for the DDP showing two credits used, and a second for the glasses of wine and the appetizer (which were not included in the DDP). Instead, only one big bill comes out, all added up with the 18% gratuity added at the bottom. Now, I have to point out, in the end it saved the Morrows some money and short changed the waitress out of the 20% tip they would have left, but it was a time consuming mistake. We had to flag down our waitress and explain to her how there are supposed to be two separte bills. She didn't quite get it, so the manager had to be called. He understood better and went to the computer to 'separate' the checks. However, when he came back the two bills had been separated, but the tip was still lumped altogther. Meaning, on the check for the the glass of wine and appetizer, she was leaving a $35 tip. In the end, we all said 'forget it' and just paid the tip and got out of there. We had wasted 20 or so minutes at the point and were just anxious to head over to the Rose & Crown.
Ms. Morrow says: Now for the DDP.. .I'm sorry but you were there, was that not confusing? I'm sure it didn't help that English was not the waitresses first language. And I'm sure I further complicated things using my DDE for the wine/appetizer. I just didn't understand why they couldn't give me a check for my DDE stuff and a check for the DDP stuff. She gave me one check with ALL the items added up. She took 20% off the entire meal AND added the automatic 18% gratuity (should have been DDE purchases only). I didn't really mind that because it made it easier for me to figure in the tip. But I was so confused by the end of it all, I'm still not sure I did it correctly. I encountered this same problem a lot with the DDP this trip. It was almost the last day before someone told me I was totalling up the slip wrong! They give you a slip with your total for the meal, then it has "suggested" tips. It tells you how much an 18% tip will be and how much a 20% tip will be. I was under the impression that I was supposed to add whatever tip I was leaving to the meal cost and then leave the tip in cash. Apparantley I was only supposed to fill out the tip on the sheet if I was charging it to my KTTW Card. . .??? What??? I'd been doing it like that all week, why didn't anyone tell me? I also gave up using the DDE for extras after the second day, it was just too damn complicated!! So those are my thoughts with the DDP. . . Will I get it again? Probably, I'm just praying they will make some adjustments for 2009.
I think that this is a problem with the Disney computer system - not so much the waiters or management staff. It's like they made these changes and never bothered to give their restaurants the heads up on how to ring bills up and such. Like I said, in the end, the Morrows got the better deal out of it by only leaving 18%, plus the tip on their DDP meal wound up being lower because the computer automatically took the DDE 20% off of it. But not only was it confusing and frustrating, it was inconvenient. Now you have to carry around a bunch of extra cards and/or cash depending on how you feel most comfortable tipping. Plus, none of the staff at these restaurants appears to know what's going on.
So, I suppose the moral of the story is, not only is the DDP a lot less attractive since these changes, it's also a pain in the BUTT to use. *sigh* Please Disney, bring back the good old dining plan...

I agree. It's not a good deal at all. Before it was excellent, and now you're lucky if you save $5 a day with it. I would personally rather use my DDE card and eat what I *want* instead of only what is covered on the plan.

DH and I are creatures of habit when it comes to food at WDW. I guess we've always known that, but writing this review pointed it out to me again. Sure, when we go we like to try a few new restaurants, but mostly we just want to go to our favorites and enjoy what we love. That's normal, right? I mean, we only get there a few times a year, so it makes sense that we always want to eat the same things. Right. Well, that's what I'm telling myself! ;)
This was our last day at the World. I know. Tragic. Everything we ate this day, we ate on our last trip in September 07. In fact, I bet if you search the thread for my last review, they will probably be almost identical. But what can you do? :confused3
We started off the morning at the Main Street Bakery. Is there anything at this place that isn't wonderful? I doubt it. DH and I both got the Ham and Cheese Croissants, while he also got a Chocolate Croissant and I got the Fruit & Yogurt Parfait.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1730.jpg
You'll notice one of the croissants has the top pulled back. That is because I hate ham, so I always give my slice to DH for him to throw on top of his sandwich. And it's not some skimpy little deli slice of ham, either. Oh no. This is a nice, thick hunk of ham, like you'd have at Easter dinner (why do we have ham on Easter? I always wind up hungry that holiday...). The sandwiches did not disappoint - they were yummy as always. The cheese was melted all over, not just placed on top. There is just something about these sandwiches that are so great, even though they're nothing special in and of themselves.
The yogurt parfait is as good as last time. There's strawberry yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, raisins and granola. And it is HUGE. I wouldn't have been able to finish it if that's ALL I got for breakfast, but I couldn't pass on the croissant, and I was planning on passing on the parfait, but I just couldn't do it. It is so delicious in the morning.
DH devoured his chocolate croissant. I've never even tasted a bite, but he assures me it's delicious.
Looking at our receipt, the total came to $19.77 -
Chocolate Croissant: $2.79
2 Egg Sandwiches: $11.98
Mixed Parfait: $3.79
Tax:$1.21
MS Bakery is a great place to grab a quick breakfast. There is always a long(ish) line, even if you get there first thing when the park opens, but you will not be disappointed. The wait is SO worth it. Everything from this place is yummy. And when we go again in October, I am almost positive we will probably be making a stop here for breakfast, and will probably wind up eating the same thing again! What can I say?
Stay tuned for lunch at Pecos Bill's!

We love MSB also and always eat there one day while at MK for breakfast. We usually use our snack credits for it. Did you use your CS credit for what you ate or did you pay oops? Just wondering if I could get the ham and cheese croissant as a snack credit? The food looks great and love the pictures.

We weren't on the DDP this time, so I'm actually not sure! Going with the standard of the 2007 DDP, you could use your snack credits for anything $4 and under, and these sandwiches were about $6, so I'm not sure if you'd be able to use snack credits. But, like I said, we found we'd actually save more money paying OOP and using our DDE card this trip, so we have no experience with the 2008 plan, so that could have changed. At the very least, it doesn't hurt to ask! :goodvibes

I don't think you can purchase an extra shot. :confused3 It would save me a lot of frustration if you could! The margaritas are already frozen and mixed, tumbling around in one of those 'slushy' machines, so I don't think the stand has any Jose on hand. BUT! We did notice that inside the Mexican pavillion, one of the stands sells plenty of Jose - which is where we started thinking that the next trip we need to get one of the little bottles and 'spice up' our margaritas on our own! :rotfl2:

Okay, so, when I started this review didn't I say it was going to be a quick one? We were only there for three days! And here it is, one month after the trip (why does it feel like so much LONGER? :confused3 ) and I haven't finished the report yet? How can I keep you all hanging? Well, I'm going to fix that problem now! This was our last day :sad1: and after we had breakfast at the Bakery we headed to Frontierland to play around. We did most of the park and at lunch time headed to our favorite place, Pecos Bill's Tall Tale in and Cafe.
There were MASSIVE lines to place your order, but I remembered about the self-serve order kiosks. They weren't running when we were there in September, so I was curious to try them out. They are all the way to the left of the check out lines, and there are only four of them. We get there and three were empty - I guess everyone else thought it'd be way more fun to wait online for twenty minutes!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1739.jpg
This was so convenient! You can't pay with cash here, though, only credit cards or KTTW/DDP cards. Touch what you want on the screen, swipe your card, and your order is sent to the CMs behind the counter. The best part is no feeling pressured to order quickly because the people behind you are giving you dirty looks for not ordering at the speed of light!
DH and I both had the quarter pound cheeseburger.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1740.jpg
DH's is the complete mess in the forground. He just loves that fixin's bar!!! The burgers were delish, as usual. They are typical theme park burgers and fries. But, you know, that just always hits the spot at Disney. I have to say, though, that the fries were not as crispy as usual that day, so I didn't eat much of them. And I noticed that the hot, melted cheese is now back at the toppings bar - they had taken it away awhile back and you had to specifically ask for it at the counter where you got your food, but this trip, it was back right next to the ketchup. :yay:
All in all, it's good food. Not gourmet, but it's just fast food. It's our favorite place to eat in the MK, followed closely by Columbia Harbor House. But the two offer such different CS food, that it's really dependant on what you're in the mood for that day.
2 Cheeseburger meals $12.18
1 Med Lemondade $2.09
1 Med Coke $2.09
Tax $1.06
Total $17.42
Now, we skipped on one of our favorite things at Pecos Bill's this go around - the Peanut Butter Brownie dessert. My God, is that thing good. Even I love it, and I cannot stand chocolate. But we had our sites set on something much more important. Ice cream from the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/prinny27/HPIM1744.jpg
We both went with a double scoop of Edy's Toll House Cookie Dough Swirl. We love this stuff! We used to get gallons of it every week at the grocery store up here - until they stopped selling it. We still go in every week and look in the freezer section to see if by some small miracle it's back, but it hasn't happened yet. Anyway, the only place we can still get this yummy goodness is at WDW, so we have to make sure we stop at least once every trip. It was as good as ever, but I was so full from lunch that I wished I had just gotten the single scoop. Why are my eyes always bigger than my stomach?
The total for the two of us came to $7.86. From there we shopped our way down Main Street, headed to DTD to do some last minute shopping and then headed back to the BWV to catch the Magical Express to the airport. Isn't that the most depressing feeling in the world? I always tear up just a bit. And it didn't help that we got to the airport to find that our flight had been delayed an hour and a half. That is extra time we could have spent at Disney. Why don't they alert you if your flight is delayed?
Well, I hope you've all enjoyed my report, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask! And look for the report I'll be doing after our 10 day trip in mid October! Seven and a half LONG months from now...

[QUOTE=Prinny27;23732000]Oh my goodness, they make a shake!?! At the plaza ice cream shop??? I feel like hopping on a flight right now... :lovestruc
I tried the cookie dough shake at the Plaza Restaurant, and it was wonderful!! And, they even brought the rest of the shake in the container it was mixed in! I love the sandwiches at the plaza, so it was a hard decision on whether to finish my meal or the shake! ;)
