do you tip mousekeeping?

Hi,

I know this has probably been addressed before, but I could not find anything when I searched. Do most of the DVC owners tip mousekeeping? We stayed for 6 nights last April and did leave $20 for the 1 time trash/towel, but now I wonder if we really should have. We are heading to BWV for 5 nights next week, and I'm just wondering what the majority of DVC owners do as far as tipping goes. Thank you for your thoughts!:)

I would think a tip would be in order if you have service provided during your stay.
We have been down twice on DVC points so far. The one time we stayed long enough for trash & towel service, they stole food out of our refridgerator. That was tip enough IMO.

We always tip mousekeeping even on a short stay. Afterall they did make the room clean for us!!:tinker:

I can understand tipping for above and beyond service, but I think tipping is getting out of control...
I have tipped mousekeeping when they have done above what is expected of them...doing the little extra things for us...I believe that warrants a tip, but not just cleaning the room...
I believe the rooom should be clean when we check in...look at what we pay to stay at Disney. We should expect a clean room upon check in..

We tip about $10 for one trash and towel. Then again, we have never called for anything extra either. I personally think that is plenty.

I don't tip for trash and towel, since they have to do that. It's part of their job, and since they are in and out in 5 minutes, I don't think they have knocked themselves out for me. Ditto for a clean room. Now, one trash and towel team actually made our beds for us(!!), so they got a nice tip when we checked out. Also, if I am there long enough to get a full cleaning, I will leave a tip for that, too. But I think it's silly to tip for a clean room, since they will lose their jobs if the room is left uncleaned. Isn't that what my dues are going for?:confused3

I agree that having a "clean" room upon check in does not require a tip. If my room is cleaned during my stay , I will tip when I check out.:flower3:

I think it depends on you. We usually have 3-4 mousekeeping services. Usually 2-3 full cleaning and one towel and trash service. We tip at each time they come. Usually $5 for each full service and $3 for towel and trash.

And how does one go about distributing these tips? Leave a note on the counter with the money. Not that I would leave money laying around but it might be a bit presumptuous of them to think any money laying out is theirs.

I always tip for full cleaning, the amount depends on the size of the villa. I leave $5.00 for a studio and $10.00 for a 1-bedroom; I haven't stayed in anything larger so I'm not sure what I would do for a 2-bedroom or GV.
I leave the money in an envelope marked for Mousekeeping, leaving it either on the vanity or on a pillow on the bed.

I always tip but I really feel they do less for us than when I stayed at the values. At the values you got towel animals and the stuffed animals would be doing something funny when we got back. (reading, hanging in window..etc...) I think the mousekeeping at DVC is good but not the best on property. This last trip it was trash and towel day-the lady knocked on the door about 9 am-I told her we would be leaving in 2 hours if she could come back. She said yes. No lie-30 minutes later-she is at the door-I was in the shower at this point. My mom told her we would try to leave as soon as possible and the lady got iritated and just said-do you need any towels or toilet paper? She then handed this stack to my mom and left. I was ticked. So-now we have double the amount of towels-(which isn't bad) but we have all of our trash to take out. I understand it is not hard to take out but it is their job so that is why it frustrated me. then on check out day the lady is there around 9:30. I tell her that we will be gone by 11. She gives me an irritated look and says ok. She is back at 10:15. At this point I tell her we are waiting on bell services to get our luggage and that we will be gone at 11. I am all for wanting to get it done early so the next person can check in but if I am not in the room after 11 she should not be so pushy. I was really turned off by mousekeeping this trip.

My basic rule of thumb is to look on the member's website at the cost of the service if we were to order an extra trash and towel or full room clean for example and tip a percentage of that.

For stays less than 8 nights, you'll get a trash and towel on the 4th day.

For stays of 8 nights or longer, you'll get a full cleaning on the 4th day and a trash and towel on the 8th day. They will repeat that sequence every 4 days as necessary.

Have not tipped Mousekeeping in the past, but would probably do so if I had to make any special requests or calls for additional items they had to deliver to the room.

Wow, $20! That's quite a tip. When I stayed in a 1 bd at BCV for the first time, I tipped like $3 for the T&T service, but the tipped wasn't taken. I left a small tip again for T&T when we stayed at BWV, and that was taken. Our last trip, we stayed at SSR. I didn't tip. When we checked into our room, the fridge was full from the last guests and was disgustingly dirty.

I think it's a nice gesture to tip, but I don't feel obligated to do so.

I agree. I do think the whole tipping thing is getting out of hand. I totally respect the right for people to do whatever they want with their own money. The side effect, unfortunately, is that there is a building expectation in many areas for tips "just because". I see tip jars everywhere now. The fact that someone did their job, to me, is not a tippable event. Why limit it just to housekeeping? What about groundskeeping, front desk, bus driver, flight attendant, pilot, gate agent, etc etc etc?

The only places I tip are for established tipped-based services where the employment contract is based on tipped income and that is factored into the based wage: namely restaraunt servers. I also tip for valet and bell services. I also tip the pizza guy.

I hope I don't need to activate my flame shield. It's still charging. :)

I'm a nurse and I've been known to say that if patients tipped we'd answer call lights a whole lot faster! ;)

I DON'T tip housekeeping for DVC stays....Disney does not consider this a tipped position. I always leave my "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on the door and clean up after ourselves. I don't like strangers in my room around my personal belongings anyway.....

We tip. But I agree that it is a personal choice. I sure won't put anyone down for not tipping. And I hope that no one would put me down for doing it. Occasionally I forget to tip on trash and towel and I can usually tell a big difference. When I tip, they usually leave extra toiletries, coffee, etc. And the room sometimes even gets a bit of a cleaning even on trash and towel. If I leave a note for a specail request (and I have), I leave a little extra. Usually the special request is for more pillows.

We do the same. The room has to be clean and in good shape.One time we got a note back with a Your Welcome on it. :goodvibes
