Are there shell on the beaches? If so what are the best beaches for shelling?
TIA

No not really, sometimes you can find Sand Dollars. I usually go to Malibu beaches, not as sure about beaches further south.
Hopefully someone from San Diego can help.

I didnt think there were shells. I did a search and didnt find anything on shelling in CA. I thought that was strange. All those nice beaches and no shells.

We just came back from California and at he beach in Carlsbad we did find a few small shells and shell fragments from larger shells. I would think that ideally you would need to go right when the tide goes out.

Please leave our shells alone. They are part of nature.
Take only memories. Leave only footprints.

We've found shells sometimes in Ventura. Not a lot, and not big pretty ones. Occasional sand dollars or parts of sand dollars.
Mostly our beaches here are nice sand!

It is actually illegal to remove shells and other parts of nature from state owned beaches & parks.
