Ouch! You are definitely handling it the right way, though! Best of luck when you have to get back to 'real life'.

Sorry to here about your layoff. Things are pretty tough for many people and businesses right now. :scared: I can say that in my experience, every job I have ever lost has ended up being a blessing. It seems like it has always been the kick I needed to get out there and find something better.:) While you are at the Fort, make sure you get your photo on Burl's porch!!!:thumbsup2

Last summer my dh got layoff after 22 years on the same job. No warning, no notice, he just went in one day and there was no job...sad day for us.
We couldn't beleive it, we always thought of the company as family oriented and to think how they layed off 52 working men with families without any warning makes me sick. :headache:

I'm sorry to hear about your lay-off. My DH got layed-off in November, and still hasn't found anything yet. He has sent roughly 60-70 resumes and we truly think it's age related - but you can't prove it when they reply (if they reply) that they've filled the job with a more qualified candidate. Anyhow - - make sure you file for unemployment!!!

Enjoy your week at the Fort!

You said you're in NC, right? My In-laws are in Salisbury and that area has been hit so hard with Lay-offs that it is unreal! The once thriving town is so sad to drive through now!

We live in an area outside of Charlotte and the economy is crappy for my family right now, I can't speak for everyone else but the blue collar world for us is falling apart.
It's almost coming to the point that you are either rich or poor there is hardly any inbetween now...guess which one we are....:rolleyes1

Unfortunately this seems to be the popular trend right now and it sucks!! My Dh was laid off in October, luckily he found another job, but he took a huge paycut. Our trips to the fort have been affected:mad: Our solution is that I have to go back to work

I got laid off in 1989 - a month before DW and I were to get married. She was getting out of grad school about the same time. Jobs were sparse in East TN then, so we ended up in Central Florida (long story).

Best thing that could have happen...I went back to college at UCF and worked at WDW. Got a degree and a great job that I NEVER would have gotten if I had not been laid off.

DisCamper, I think I saw you were a ex-CM. Disney IS the largest single site employer in the US (maybe world), has great insurance. A stop by Casting may not be a bad idea!

If I didn't have kids in school.....

Good luck,

Gillian

I'm so sorry to hear that! A disney trip should help cheer you up.

I'm currently looking for a job because DH's is just not that stable. he's going to stay as long as they'll have him, but you just never know these days with big companies. or small ones.

Next week I'm going to have to apply to the one place I most dread working - CVS.

I'm in W-S. Company I worked for suddenly moved out of state. Luckily I've found a tem-to-hire job locally, but it was tough. Worked part time but now full time .. it's a bummer but have to do it. Just got back from WDW but would love to go there again before being hired full time. Should be counting my blessings because jobs are hard to find in this area!

if that would happen to either of us, that is where we would be. but, we would be looking for jobs there...

With my package deal, bonus and unemployment we will be good for the rest of this year. If I thought it would hurt my family by going to WDW I would not go Family 1st. FW is just a great place to take your mind off of everything.:thumbsup2

Wouldn't hurt to pick up the Orlando paper and see what going down there. Due to the tourist industry coming from overseas, that area is still growing.

The VA is laying off part timers here. I am the last left in my department and may go in September, depending on how the new boss feels about part timers. Fortuneately, I have my own office so we weren't relying entirely on the VA for income, but my hours were cut in half and amounts to a pay cut of around 20,000 bucks to me. I don't care who you are, that kind of cut hurts.

It doesn't matter if it is 1 or 20K cut, if you are not independently wealthy, it hurts!

Sorry to hear about your job. My dd has lost 3 jobs in the past 7 years because of company closings. Funny, everytime we came back from a Disney trip he would lose a job. Our running joke is that if he loses this job, we are going to sell the house, buy a bigger motorhome and head to Disney and try and get a job with the mouse. I just wonder if working with the mouse takes away some of the magic instead of visiting. Good luck in your job hunt.

4 years ago I was laid off the day before Thanksgiving (and our week trip to the Fort). Oh, and it also happened to be my birthday. Unfortunately it was such a shock that it kind of put a damper on the whole trip (I spent a lot of time at Crockett's Tavern...lol). The worst part is 6 months later the company was bought out by MS, and the remaining people either got their pick moving to Washington with six figure salaries or leaving the company with a six figure buyout. Talk about a slap in the face :/

I've been layed off twice, and it truly is a horrible feeling. I would much rather be fired than layed off, because then at least I did something to cause it. In these days and ages, no one truly is safe from a layoff, sometimes they just come in waves.

Here's to hoping that you find new and better employment soon!

I worked for the mouse for 2 summers. For me and some of the people I have talked to you do lose the magic. You look at everything in a deferent light. I still love to go to WDW but just to lose myself. No News No Looking at the time just fun and relaxing.

I worked at MGM for one summer back in 1994. I sold ice cream outside the Great Movie Ride (same cart is still there, it's just to the left of the entrance).

DisCamper is correct, you do lose some of the magic unfortunately :(

Hey, I remember you at that cart. You dropped my Mickey bar on the ground and told me to get lost. You owe me one.

I was at MGM '89-'96. Main Entrance Merch, with a stint at Back Lot.

Colson, I remember you - black shoes, no facial hair, always pointing with at least two fingers, very knowledgeable about the closest bathrooms....

It was fun being part of the "magic", but it is different to go back. Luckily, I can forget and just enjoy the experience.

The bad part is Disney gave me an eye for "bad show" – I can't stand to go into stores and see employees not acting right. I still offer to take pictures of strangers just so they can be in them :)

My dad just got laid off 2 weeks ago from his job he has had for 23 years. He is finding it really hard finding a new one mostly due to is age many companies do not want to hire somone only 5 or 6 years from retirement age.
