I couldn't believe both were actually available and I had to decide which one! So I went with AKL booked savannah view since I've never stayed there before. Now I'm rethinking my decision, :confused3 I love the Boardwalk but wanted to try something different.
Did I make the right choice? Will I be able to do the safari tour that you have to pay for?

I think the sunrise safari is only available to concierge guests, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
As to choosing between the two, I say go for it. We are spliting our stay this summer to try the AKV for a few nights. Unless you are a location fiend, like my friend, I think you'll have a wonderful time. You could always split your stay, too.

One of the advantages of DVC is that there is always another trip. :) So if you try AKV and miss BWV, then next time you'll know.
My advice is to keep the AKV reservation. You might find out that you absolutely love it. :)

We own at both. Two very different resorts, two very good resorts. It seems you have already been to BWV. AKV is like going 180 degrees in another direction. It is isolated, has the large savannas with animals which you do see from your savanna view room, and where the savannas and hotel structures are not there are huge amounts of trees and foliage. Makes you feel like you are not even in Disney or Florida. Structure, theme, huge lobby are all very nice. Pool does not have huge slide but a more quieter feel to it than BWV, and with lots of foliage and trees in that area, you can go to places and feel like you are not in the crowd at the pool. Rooms and building are subdued, somewhat dark collors and whole place, including rooms, is much dimmer in lighting than BWV. Boma buffet restaurant is (my view) best buffet restaurant at WDW. Jiko's is more upper crust and quite expensive. Hotel also has a little cafeteria for quick food. Place can seem subdued and uncrowded even when full.
Bus service is very good and it is direct shot to parks unlike those death rides to all Epcot resorts you can sometimes get at BWV.
It also has very long hallways that match in length BWV. However, they pulled a trick at this one to make it seem shorter -- they stuck an elevator about half way down so you walk to it, go down (or up when returning) and walk rest of way on different floor.
You cannot do the sunrise safari (concierge only) but can do the sunset safari for a price.
