View Full Version : Only Five Miles from Disneyland

I'm currently traveling on business and I am sitting in hotel room which is only 5 miles from the entrance to DL. I'm here until Friday and have camera and tripod in tow (of course). Since we live pretty much right in the middle of DL and WDW, it's not like I get many opportunities to get those much desired Disney shots we all know and love. However, I've been instructed by some little strange humans that live in my house that I am not to make my way through a DL turnstile without them. Now, it looks like I will have lots of free time on my hands while here. And, I need pictures! Sure, there's DTD and everything else in southern California that lends itself to wonderful pictures, but how can I be this close and not get some genuine shots of DL?

What would you do? Plop down the cash on a one day ticket then get raked over the coals? Just forget about it and find another subject to shoot? I'm bored and I have a camera. I need some help here........

Tell them you had to go in in order to buy them some DL tee shirts and Disney Valentine candy, and to take photos to make an album "just for them".

Have fun! :wizard:

LOL, NostalgicDad, isn't this like the 3rd trip to DL in less than a year? ;) You might as well buy the one day PH and then upgrade it to an AP before you leave. :thumbsup2 Then you'll have even more reason to keep going back to the Happiest Place on Earth!:cheer2:

I would go for it if I were you, but then again, I've never been to DL. If you have been before, you could just tell the family that those are old pics you are looking at! Hopefully they don't know about the Exif information....

Good point. Some Disney schwag should smooth things over for them, eh? ;)

Yep, 3rd trip (if I go this time) since August. I never thought I would have a need for an AP but the way things are going, I should probably give some serious thought to it. :cool2:

As much as I rant and rave about all my pictures plus the fact that I'll be in my office at home doing all the PP and uploading, I think the cat will be out of the bag for sure that I went during this business trip. Maybe in the PP I could put a sepia filter on all the photos and tell them they are really old like you mentioned.

That's a good idea too. I could also throw in that someone scheduled a meeting at the park and I had no choice. :rolleyes1

You're in my old stomping grounds. We used to live very close to the intersection of Ball and Euclid - or was it Katella - no- Katella runs the same direction as Ball I think.

:rotfl: OK - I have officially lost it - I am typing (talking) to myself on a discussion forum. :sad2:

Anyway - DH used to travel there a lot to do business with Boeing (which bought he buildings that used to belong to his company and which he worked in) and we pretty much told him the same thing. However - we did allow him to go to DTD as long as he brought something back for us. ;)

Can't wait to see your shots.

I feel your pain; I am often in Florida for business but never have the time to go to WDW -it was really hard last fall when I sat at an intersection waiting to turn left, when the road sign said Disney was just a few miles straight ahead!

I'd drop the cash for the day pass and go take pictures to your heart's delight! If you don't ride the rides, does it count with your kids? :thumbsup2

It's better to ask for forgiveness that to ask for permission. Just do it!

If there is no chance of getting beaten afterwards, then I can't see a problem.

I feel your pain, I'm going to visit my parents in Florida in a couple of weeks and it's killing me not to visit WDW while I'm there. :thumbsup2

Now, that's a good way to look at it! I hadn't thought about the true severity of the consequences. How bad could it be, really???

Lots of good reasons to just take that solo trip into the park. This Thursday will be the day if I decide to go. I should have the entire day to enjoy it so that will be nice. Oh, but I just realized that's Valentine's Day. :scared: What might I be getting myself into with regards to crowds? Well, this is going to make it a little more interesting (especially with my DW). There may actually be that chance of a beating afterall. Stay tuned......

If you can't make it into the park, there's plenty to shoot in Downtown Disney or throughout the hotels.

Geez, how bad is it to be that close and not be able to go in?

Ok. I went. It was cold, I missed my family, and the flag retreat got me all emotional. But, the sun came out, I had a Dole Whip, I got dreamed, and I took a plethora of photos (day and night). It was a great day!

Now the explaining when I return home tomorrow evening. The souvenirs should help, but I'm thinking I should keep the fact that I got dreamed to myself!

Haha, good plan. Make sure you tell them it was cold and cloudy. It should make them feel a bit better about it all.

Now, on to the photos. Let's see 'em!

These guys were great. They call themselves the 'Delta Daddios'. Just some good ol' impromptu street singing and dancing.

Great shots! That I didn't get a chance to do any decent night shots of CA Adventure is one of my regrets from my last DLR resort. Of course, I can't stand the Paradise Pier section (except for that great roller coaster) but it does make for some awfully pretty photos. :)

What lens were you using for your night shots? It looks like it had a whole lot of aperture blades judging by the light coronas.

Thanks Groucho. I'm kind of the same way about the Paradise Pier area. It doesn't do much for me either with the exception of some picturesque settings.

For the night shots, I used my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. Most of the shots were from f/13 to f/16. I've been pretty satisfied with it.

Thanks Jen. You know, Cypress wasn't all that bad either. I also hung out with a friend in Irvine and that city is really nice. The Spectrum mall was a really cool place.

Great photos!

What dream did you get???

The park closed at 8pm and I got to stay until 9:30pm, along with a couple thousand other lucky folks. They gathered us all together while the park cleared out then turned us loose to have our way. I heard folks were able to just cycle through rides since there were no lines. (However, I think everyone chose to ride Nemo) Even with a couple of thousand people, it really did seem empty, only seeing the occasional soul. Of course, I spent the time taking advantage of more after dark photo opps with no people in the images. My wife thought I was crazy for not riding anything but I did what pleases me the most! It was a lot of fun for sure.
