Days 1 & 2, December 26, 27: Arrival at POP, Wonderland Tea Party and Fantasmic!
ON OUR WAY
Every two years, our entire family (as described above) congregates for the holidays at Disney World. It serves as our big, fat, family reunion. In the past we have stayed at Dixie Landings, Wilderness Lodge, and the Boardwalk Villas. For this visit, we had arranged for my own nuclear family unit to spend three nights at POP Century, and then we would move to the Bonnet Creek Resort to join the rest of the gang (and oh boy, I won't even get into the background on ALL OF THAT--suffice it to say Timeshare Users Group was fantastic, but I had more difficulty with ebay :sad2: and we were forced into 3 nights of POP, as opposed to my original 2-night plan...more on why this became a problem LATER :rotfl2:)

On December 26th, my little family (myself and David, along with Katja, Annika and Thaise) headed to the airport for a 1:00 p.m. flight to Orlando on Southwest Airlines. Our plan was to catch the 9:40 ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle, but when we arrived at the ferry terminal we discovered the 9:40 boat was already full :scared: Alright, on to plan B! We would drive the car all the way around the peninsula. The time was currently 9:25--we figured we should make it to SeaTac airport by about 11:00 (had we made the 9::40 boat, we would have arrived at SeaTac by 10:35 or so). As we arrived at SeaTac, we once again realized we had underestimated the sheer volume of people traveling this season (okay, one might assume we would knowledgeable in such matters, since we have traveled practically every Christmas season for the past 10 years—but no!!!!! We almost were unable to find a park-n-fly: airport parking was completely full, and all of the nearby park-n-flies were full as well. Oh sure, there was a completely unsecured $4.00/day in an open parking lot (my older DD said in a panic--"WE AREN'T GOING TO PARK THERE ARE WE MOM???"), but nothing else in sight....Finally, by some miracle :worship: :worship: We finally found a lot with space (after I nearly killed DH--why didn't we leave the car and walk on the ferry and take a cab to the airport, etc. etc. etc...) and we were on our way.

ARRIVAL POP CENTURY
We arrived in Orlando at 11:00 p.m., and after securing our rental car (a nerve-wracking experience that I won’t get into here), we were on our way to Disney’s Pop Century. At 1:00 a.m., we checked-in and were assigned to the 80’s building, a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the computer pool. By this time, we were absolutely starving, since our last meal had been a quick bite at SeaTac airport 10 HOURS earlier. (True, Southwest has snacks for purchase, but PUHLEEEEEEZE, who can even count crackers and slim jims as real food?????)

All eating possibilities were closed at POP, so we ordered from Dominoes. While waiting for the pizza, the girls and Thaise headed out to explore the resort (yes, at 1 o’clock in the morning :cool1: ). The weather was very pleasant and warm, a slight bit welcomingly muggy, a warm blanket that softly yet insistently whispered, “kids, you aren’t in Washington anymore….go play!!”

I have to admit that my older daughter was pretty disappointed with POP (okay, okay, we usually stay in Deluxes, but this was soooo cool...) Granted, she was absolutely exhausted and there were five of us crammed into the VERY small room, but nevertheless it was slightly disturbing when she weepily said to me, “Mom, I just don’t feel the magic.” I assured her that once she had some sleep and we truly started our vacation, she would be feeling plenty of magic! :goodvibes

Finally, at about 2:00 a.m., after stuffing our faces with pizza and getting the roll-away set up for a very cozy 5-person stay (we had a last minute addition to our group when Thaise decided she would join us for the trip), we settled down to sleep.

I awakened the next morning at about 9:00 a.m. The weather was beautiful and sunny. Everyone else was sound asleep, so I headed to the food court to get food for the troops and coffee for myself. Also, I was expecting a call from friends of ours who were also in Orlando and who planned to drop their daughter, D (a very good friend of my younger daughter Annika) off with us for the day. Later, we would be meeting them for dinner and Fantasmic at MGM Studios (soon to be Disney Studios). The morning was almost surreal for me: the sun was shining and warm on my skin, smiling, eager faces draped in shorts and tank tops, hands laden with the bounty of the food court surrounded me. Children frolicked in the interactive fountains and the pool (OMG wasn’t’ it too early for that?). The hustle and bustle of POP seemed oddly detached from my sleep deprived mind—I was floating in a warm bubble of Disney magic :cloud9: (my daughter’s comments notwithstanding!).

At around 10:00 I had our little charge D in my hands, food had been delivered (by yours truly) to the room, and it was time to rally the troops. The girls were very excited at the prospect of a trip to the Hippy Dippy Pool, so they roused themselves fairly easily. The girls spent a couple of hours swimming while I took in the sun...ahhhh, pure bliss. We then returned to the room for showers and to get ready for the Wonderland Tea Party at the Grand Floridian.

WONDERLAND TEA PARTY & A MAGICAL MOMENT AT DISNEY STUDIOS
We drove our rental car to the GF, arriving at about 1:15. Such a beautiful, beautiful resort! We wandered around, bought fudge from the giant gingerbread house and took some pictures of the towering Christmas tree in the lobby. Thaise, having never been to WDW, was quite impressed! Once the girls were checked in and were having a blast at the Tea Party, David (my dear DH) left to pick up some groceries, Thaise went exploring, and I headed to the amazing beach and pool area to grab a lounger and soak in the sights and sounds.

After the Tea Party, we drove to MGM (now Disney Hollywood) Studios, thinking we would walk around a bit before meeting our friends at the Brown Derby at 6:00. We entered the park at 4:30ish, and immediately upon entering, a cast member approached us. I admit that my first thought was that the cast member was a photopass photographer—but where was his camera? Instead of asking to take our picture however, he asked us what our absolute favorite ride at MGM was. Annika answered (with enthusiasm!) that she was sure Rock-N-Roller Coaster would be her ABSOLUTE favorite (after years of patiently waiting to grow and patiently doing child-swap, she was finally tall enough to ride it this trip   ). Now...drum roll...The cast member informed us that he would escort us to the front of the line! Wow, we were granted a Magical Moment during our very first steps in the park! He walked us to R-N-R (which had a 150 minute wait, ouch!) and took us through the exit to the loading area. We missed the pre-show, but hey, I have seen it scads of times and this was just TOO COOL. The girls (it was also the first time for Annika’s little friend, D) would have plenty of opportunities later in the trip to see the pre-show. The girls LOVED R-N-R, and the whole experience of being escorted through the exit was fabulous!

We met D’s parents for dinner shortly before 6, and had a SCRUMPTIOUS meal at the Brown Derby. I was a bit disappointed that the “stars” didn’t wander through, but apparently they haven’t done that for some years at the BD.

By 7:30 we were on our way to line up for the 8:30 Fantasmic. We got perfect seats, front and center. All of the girls (D’s older sister, 13, was also with us now) sat several rows closer than us, and the adults enjoyed good conversation and several adult beverages while we waited for the show to start. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly the 45-minute wait went for the kids—we didn’t hear a peep from them :thumbsup2 Apparently, they too were having great conversation and a good time. Not too long ago, I wouldn’t have dared to risk a 45 minute pre-show wait! It goes to show how good friends, a little bit of growing, and a little pixie dust can go a long way! Luckily, it was a wonderful warm evening--since we were close enough to get plenty of mist from the water projectors--especially for the girls, who were sitting in about the 3rd row.

After the show, we headed for the Osbourne Spectacle of Dancing Lights. Just awesome! It was the perfect end to a perfectly magical day (and yes!! My older DD Katja was feeling the magic!).

Then we were on our way back to POP for a good night’s sleep—tomorrow was a 7:00 a.m. entry at Magic Kingdom! AND my brother and his rambunctious boys :scared1: would be joining us bright and early...

Day 3, December 28: The Rest of the Gang Arrives, Extra Magic Hour MK, Epcot

My brother and his crew had arrived in Orlando late the night before—they had driven from Wisconsin, a 20 hour adventure! They stayed the night at Gaylord Palms, which my sister-in-law had secured on Priceline. We arranged for them to meet us at the POP bus stop at 6:20 a.m. Amazingly enough, we were all up on time :worship: , and running close to schedule. We caught the bus at 6:35, and arrived at MK at a few minutes after 7:00.

(A side note: POP’s bus service is GREAT. They have their own bus, and we never waited more than 10 minutes. Compare that to our experience with Boardwalk and Beach Club busses, which served—at the time of our last visits in 2005 and 2006— Boardwalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan and Dolphin, causing very long rides with multiple stops and very crowded busses!)

I love walking into MK in the early morning when Main Street is nearly empty :cloud9: . This day was no exception, and it was truly magical. We posed for some pictures in front of the castle (since we had the place to ourselves!), and then went to Fantasyland where we rode Snow White (not MY choice for a first ride, but my 4 yo DN is obsessed with Snow White), then Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh.

All three were walk-ons. We made our way to Tomorrowland where the kids rode Buzz Lightyear two times in a row, while I grabbed FastPasses for Space Mountain and purchased coffee and cheesy pretzels to feed the crew. After Buzz we headed to Frontierland for its 8:00 opening to hit Splash and Big Thunder. Splash was temporarily closed, so we went with the herd to BTMR, which was absorbing all of the people who couldn’t get on Splash. The wait said 20 minutes, and the line looked intimidating, but we actually only waited about 10 minutes. Afterward, Splash was running, and it was a complete walk on. We went twice in a row!

ANOTHER MAGICAL MOMENT!
By the end of the 2nd go-round on Splash, it was nearing 9:00 (and think about it—Snow White, Pooh, Peter Pan, twice on Buzz, BTMRR, twice on Splash—in less than 2 hours during the busiest week of the year!). As we exited from our 2nd spin on Splash, we encountered a cast member handing out dream fastpasses—OMG!— and we were the lucky recipients! My brother really didn’t have any idea what was happening and thought I had lost my mind since I started screaming with delight. The MK Dream FastPasses have FPs for Jungle Cruise, Big Thunder, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Mickey’s Philharmagic and Stich’s Great Escape.

We decided to ride Pirates of the Carribbean before using our Dream FPs, before its line got too long. As we were loading, we ran into D and her family—everyone excitedly showed off their dream FPs. After POC, D joined our party—we figured we would need to get a little creative with the Dream FPs since D didn’t have one, but the girls really wanted to spend some more time together.

Our first stop was Jungle Cruise (there really wasn’t a long wait, but we used our FPs anyway),
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8df28b3127cceb41c40f40c0c00000026100AZOGzZu5cOG Og

then back to Tomorrowland for Space Mountain (which we all rode twice since I had picked up regular FPs earlier), Stitch and another go at Buzz. We then headed to Fantasyland for another Pooh and Mickey’s Philharmagic. We decided to skip a 2nd round of Peter Pan (we had actually planned to be OUT of MK by this time, but hey, we HAD to use at least MOST of our dream FPs!). We trekked back to Adventureland for BTMRR and Splash Mountain for the Grand Finale. By now it was about 1:00—we met D’s family at Splash for the kid handoff, and then started to make our way out of the park.

We had 2:45 reservations for the Storybook Princess Breakfast at Castle Akershus in Norway, so we decided to take the monorail from MK directly to EPCOT. It was a fun ride, and as it turns out, the only monorail ride we would take this trip. My DH David parted ways with us at this point, as he had volunteered to pick my parents up at the airport at 5:00 (anything to get out of another meal with the princesses!).

EPCOT AND STORYBOOK PRINCESS BREAKFAST
We arrived at EPCOT and slowly made our way to Norway, stopping first at Station Cool to sample all of the international coca-cola products. My brother and his family had not yet experienced this, and they thought it was great fun. My personal favorite is the rather bitter Italian drink—what is it called?—and the favorite of the kids was the orange vitamin drink from Japan.

We arrived at Norway and checked in ½ hour early, hoping to get seated a bit early. No dice. We didn’t get seated until almost 3:15, an hour after checking in!!! I really think something went wrong, because—since the wait was so long and no one else seemed to have such a long wait—I kept checking in. At my 1st inquiry I was told that no, they hadn’t called my name yet (I had asked if perhaps we had been called and missed it?) At my 2nd inquiry I was told that there were several large groups ahead of us and since we were also a “large” group of 8, our wait was a bit longer. At my 3rd inquiry, I was told that there were TWO large groups ahead of us, and then we were next in line to be seated. I waited as they called a group of 13. Then a group of 10. I gathered the gang—hey, we are next! Then they called a group of 7. Okay, maybe 7 doesn’t count as a “large” group (but wait a minute, we are only 8, couldn’t we have had that table??). Then they called a group of 16, when I was ABSOLUTELY sure we would be next. AND THEN they called another group of 10! Okay, the CM must have realized I was about to lose it (although I hadn’t said a word since the last check-in!) because he got on the radio and I very clearly heard my last name stated several times. For the entire hour I had been standing there, I had not heard anyone on the radio discussing waiting guests. I am not sure what happened, but it is obvious to me that the 1 hour wait should not have happened, especially when the CM who had been on the radio apologized profusely for the wait.

Once we were finally seated, our meal was very good. Everyone was absolutely starving—the last time we had eaten had been those cheesy pretzels in Tomorrowland at MK. On previous trips, we had enjoyed the Storybook Princess breakfast. This was our first lunch, and it was great. Several years ago we had enjoyed the Norwegian buffet as part of a Candlelight Processional package, so I was delighted that the buffet was part of lunch! W e got to see Pocohontas, Ariel in her blue dress (both firsts for us), Aurora, Jasmine, and Belle. My DH Tanner was disappointed that we didn’t see Snow White, but fun was had by all.

A DOOR MALFUNCTION AND BABY RUTH MOMENT AT POP
At about 4:30, we made our way out of EPCOT and caught the bus back to POP. Our plan was to let all of the kids swim at the Hippy Dippy Pool and play in the interactive fountains for a bit, before heading over to Bonnet Creek to check-in (David was still at the airport retrieving my parents--they were expected back at 6:30 or so…). The first sign that things would probably not go according to plan happened when NONT ONE (out of 4) of the room keys in my possession would open the door. What???? I told Steve, Sarah and the kids to go down to the computer pool (directly under our room) while I made the 15-minute round trip hike to the lobby to change out keys. When I got back from the lobby, all of the children were swimming in the computer pool--okay, my nephews had retrieved their swimsuits from their car, but my daughters were swimming in their clothes! EEgads…and still, the keys to the room did not work! My feet were sooooo tired, I could not face a 2nd hike to the lobby. As I contemplated the dilemma, my cell phone rang--it was David, reporting that he had the parents and they were about 30 minutes out. He also reported that he too had had key trouble, and that POP had actually needed to send someone out to physically work on the door, because even his new keys didn’t work. LOVELY. I decided to use the house phone in the laundry room to call guest services, instead of risking further damage to my poor feet (my SIL was wearing a pedometer, and informed me that we had logged more than 10 miles today already!). They said they would send someone up to work on the door. OMG. :sad2: :sad2: :scared1:

The adults sat in lounge chairs, watching the kids swim, and waited. About 10 minutes later, an engineer came rolling up to the room on a Segway (!). After messing around with the lock for a good amount of time, the engineer informed me that it was impossible to reprogram the lock, he was actually going to need to change the entire thing out--did we have somewhere we needed to be in the next hour? Umm, yes! He would need to let us in with an actual key (which of course, he didn’t have on his person, but would have sent up) and then they would fix the lock while we were out for the evening. Lovely. I went back down to the pool to find…

My older daughter screaming “Mommy! Mommy! That boy pooped in the pool!”

Me: “No, no, surely not…” :scared1: :scared1:

Her: “LOOK!!!! HE IS PLAYING WITH IT!!! IT IS FLOATING IN THE POOL AND HE IS HOLDING IT POOP IN THE POOL! THERE IS POOP IN THE POOL!!!”

By now, thanks to the alarm being raised by my daughter, the lifeguard approached the boy in question, WHO PROMPTLY TRIED TO HAND THE LOVELY LOG OF CRAP TO THE LIFEGUARD.

Needless, to say, the lifeguard declined, the pool was cleared of people, and my daughters informed my that they were pretty sure they had seen the kid doing the deed, which apparently involved some serious grunting followed immediately by the kid squeezing and kneading the turds that had floated to the surface. “AND”, they squealed, “we were right next to him! Right next to the poop he was squeezing!”

Okay, can we get into the blasted GD room yet to get them out of these contaminated clothes (no swimsuits, remember?) and get everyone disinfected???

Yes, the answer was yes, a very good answer. The engineer with the old-fashioned key was able to let us in…HOLY CRAP, literally…

And then! David arrived with Nana and Poppa, and we all had a cozy reunion (ummm, 12 of us in the itsy bitsy POP room!), before we FINALLY loaded up in our vehicles and headed to Bonnet Creek! We checked my parents and my brother and his family into their 3-bedroom unit. The room was on the 3rd floor, and was quite large and very, very nice. The view was of the parking lot, but also looked directly over at POP, where you could see the big giant bowling pins. Their room was in Tower III, which is next to the “slide pool.” This was quite some distance from the main pool, but we decided the slide pool was much better for kids. A bar and pizza/snack place was also adjacent to the slide pool—nice amenities, all right there, no need to trek anywhere else in the resort.

We spent the evening at the pool, and had pizza for dinner. The kids had a blast on the slide, even though it was technically closed. YES, they were climbing up the dry slide and barreling down. At around 10:00 we took the girls and headed back for our last night at POP, while the rest of the clan settled into their first night at Bonnet Creek.

Day 3, December 29th: Another day at Magic Kingdom!

We attempted a repeat of yesterday in terms of departure time, but my brother and his posse didn’t get to the POP bus stop until about 6:45; our group was running behind too!!! Must have too much pizza and pool time (and maybe adult beverage) the night before :cool1:

My parents declined a trip to the parks, and elected to sleep-in instead (smart move!). David also volunteered to stay behind and pack us up, since our little family was checking out of POP, and moving into a 2-bedroom unit at Bonnet Creek.

Despite our “late” start, we made it to MK by about 7:25. Our plan was to hit all of the rides we still wanted to do, but hadn’t made yesterday, and then leave the park fairly early to take advantage of the warm beautiful weather.

Once again, as we strolled along Main Street, it was nearly empty. Since we were not in a huge hurry, we stopped for several character photos--the girls were thrilled to pose with Daisy, “You hardly ever see Daisy Mom!”.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8df28b3127cceb41c64598d8300000025110AZOGzZu5cOG Og
Then to Tomorrowland to ride Buzz (yeah, this is one we did SEVERAL times yesterday, but it is a huge favorite of all of us!) and Laugh Floor--which was new for all of us. The Laugh Floor was hilarious--my brother was selected as “THAT GUY,” to the delight of all the kids in our party. "THAT GUY" is featured throughout the show--picked on mercilessly, but my brother played along, and it became another magical moment for us! After Laugh Floor, we headed to Haunted Mansion, and then one more ride on Splash Mountain.

We had 10:00 reservations for Crystal Palace, checked-in at about 10 minutes until 10, and were seated within 15 minutes (MUCH better than the nightmare yesterday!). It was a good breakfast, and the kids had fun mugging for photos with Pooh and Friends. http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8df28b3127cceb41d8eff2c2c00000025110AZOGzZu5cOG Og

I had reservations for the girls at Bibbity Boppity Boo in the Castle at 12, but decided that our time would be better spent at the pool on this beautiful afternoon--it was sunny, warm, brilliant weather, and the forecast was calling for a cold front within the next couple of days. Also, we were all a little tired, needless to say. I went to the Castle to cancel, and Katja tagged along. Well, BIG MISTAKE LETTING HER TAG ALONG! Once she saw what she was missing I HEARD ABOUT IT THE REST OF THE TRIP.

We left MK around 12:00, grabbed a bus to POP, picked up the car and then drove to Bonnet Creek. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool. It was lovely, warm, lots of sunshine, perfect. We checked into our 2-bedroom unit (heaven, pure heaven, compared to our tiny room at POP!) My SIL made lasagna for dinner, and we had a great evening hanging out and visiting.

Day 4, December 30th--Disney Studios
In the morning, we all piled into my brother Steve’s Explorer (except for Nana and Poppa who planned to go shopping in Downtown Disney) and headed to Disney Studios. We arrived a hair past 8:00, and went straight down Sunset to Tower of Terror, which we rode twice. I grabbed Fastpasses for Rock-N-Roller coaster, and then we queued up for the 9:00 High School Musical show. The show takes place about ½ way down the path to the Fantasmic arena, in the (don’t remember the name) Courtyard. It was a great show, much better than I expected! My youngest DD was picked THREE times to participate, and all four of the kids were selected for the last number, which was quite a treat!

After HSM, we headed to Lights, Action, Motor cars. (My daughters protested vociferously against having to see LAM, to which my brother responded that HE had suffered through HSM, so they could suffer through LAM. My older daughter retorted that UNCLE STEVE only suffered for 25 minutes, and SHE would suffer for 35 minutes…LOL…:rotfl2: :rotfl2: ) We managed to get great seats, close but still in the shade. This was the first time my nephews had seen the show, and they thoroughly enjoyed it, although my 6 yo nephew was obsessed with which cars were the bad guys and which ones were the good guys.

After a quick ride on Star Tours (no wait and no FPs, woo hoo!), it was time for our 11:00 Sci Fi reservation. We were waylaid a bit however, by the Jedi Training Academy. Unknowingly, I had pointed my brother and his boys in that direction, thinking it was a queu for pictures with Star Wars characters (as had been my experience a year and a half ago!). Instead, it was the full fledged Jedi Training Academy, a show with audience participation and where kids (padawan in training!) learn to fight and then face of against Darth Vader and Darth Maul. Wow, another new experience! My nephews were immediately obsessed. Of course, by now it was a mob scene, and there was no hope of getting picked to participate. So on we went to a great lunch at Sci Fi…
