Last year was the first GGG, and was at Tal-y-Bont On Usk which is near Brecon, we had a great laugh. Some of us camped but others hired tipis, there are also two B&B's in the area. Would love you to join us ...The campsite we used was Gilestone Farm, if you do a search, you should find the website

Just a thought but, wouldn't the Bank Holiday weekend be better as those wanting to stay till the Monday won't have to miss work or take the children out of school? Last year it was 3 night weekend which meant we had 2 full days - which worked really well.
Jules are they still doing tipis at Talybont on Usk as they don't mention them on the website anymore? That was such a bonus when it got rainy and chilly in the evenings -wasn't it?.
We are free on all the following weekends 24th and 31st May, 28th June, July 26th, 2nd and 9th August weekends.:thumbsup2

How does everyone feel about a bank holiday weekend, Tam has a good point, it saves taking a day off work and school, and it was great fun staying that extra night, Whitsun weekend suit everyone ?

That was before we wrecked one of them!:rotfl: Even if the campsite itself isn't offering tipis, I don't see why they wouldn't permit us to get an outside firm to provide the number we require (after all, that's what they did - they didn't own them). It would be good to be in our private field again. The Churchills can pretty much do any date at the moment (unless he decides to whisk me away to Florida), but I'd like to put in an order for good weather. :thumbsup2

Hi Jill, I just had a look because Travel Inn and Travel Lodge seem to be popping up everywhere now, the neareast towns to TalyBont are Brecon and Abergavenny, and unfortunately nothing there. There is a Travel Inn in Merthyr and also Ebbw Vale, but Ebbw Vale I think would still be about 15 miles from TalyBont.

a great old partay by the sounds of it, if its ok with everyone I would like to book sometime in March, I know that when Ian and I tried to get in at Bank Holiday last year it was booked solid, so the sooner I can let them know the better, they don't require deposits so I will just need to know what you require, how many adults, how many children ... last year it was £7 per adult per night, £3.50 for a child over eight, and free for children under eight x

As Nat says it is the right one, I am having problems with the Tipi man at the moment, he has increased his prices to a ridiculous level. I have just the minute sent off an e-mail to Gilestone to see if there is anything at all they can do to help those who don't have a tent, caravans etc. With any luck they will get back to me shortly and we can reach a decision as to what we are going to do x

ok things are not going as smoothly as last year, the tipi man is not playing, he has more or less doubled his cost to put the tipis at Gilestone, he wants a ridiculous amount, it would be cheaper to go to Spain for the weekend. I have contacted Gilestone to see if they have alternatives but it is basically tents, touring caravans or nothing with them. I love to organise this and we has so much fun last year, it would be a shame I think for it not to happen again, its also great for DIS bonding. So, does anyone have any suggestions to throw into the pot, static caravans for those who dont want to camp is of course an option, but there are very few sites prepared to hire them for three nights over the bank holiday, I guess they are hoping for the weekly bookings, I did find one near Narberth, part of Vale Holidays, but distance wise I dont want to be putting people off. If anyone has any ideas or suggestion they would be more than welcome, I will then get my reearching cap back on xxx

I just got a call from Chris the lady at Gilestone, she knows what a flap I have been in, she too is not impressed with our tipi friend. She has a suggestion, basically she has a 20 x 40 foot marquee that she is willing to get put up on the bottom field, they are doing this for the first time early in May for another party, so she thought of us, and suggested that we could do the same. She says that it is not a problem for people to sleep in, it would just be a much larger version of a tipi, it takes about 4 hours to put up and take down again, so she is looking at £150.00 for the three nights, this will include electric as they have just had electric put in the bottom field. She says that anyone bringing tents will be able to pitch them around the marquee. So what do you think? she has pencilled the marquee in for us, and I need to call her back, she has also asked that I let her know asap how many people will be camping as she is concerned about it being the bank holiday weekend. Let me know please your thoughts on this ???

Sounds like Gilestone are bending over backwards to accommodate us - which is so kind of them.
We are up for the marquee option as it would then give us somewhere to gather should the heaven's open - which of course they won't. Shame we can't have the open fire in it though as that was lovely - I might bring an electric one instead though in case it gets nippy at night:rotfl:

praise be, we have a result, I will buy bl**dy sheepskin rugs for you my darling Matt LOL. Tam, you have a point about the leccy fires and we have two that we can bring for it. If the weather is kind I know they have an area where they are prepared to light a fire for us, so thats an option. It seems so far that Carol wants to kip down in the marquee, so I am assuming that Jen and Alex will want to too, so Churchills and Stringers are you happy to get your shushy in it too, it sounds like it is plenty big enough at 20 foot by 40 foot. They want £150 for it, and I agree it will be a great base for us should it rain, would everyone be up to paying a share towards is at our party pad, I reckon £10 a head would cover it, and if thats not quite enough I am happy to pay the difference - would that be ok, and then of course anyone who wants to shushy in it would be welcome - is that ok ???

I have update from Christine - they went to Makro yesterday and got the Party Tent, it is not as big as the marquee, so she says £130.00, if that is ok with everyone. As the tipi people from last year know, they also charge camping fees on top of the tipi mans cost, what she has said is that for those who want to sleep in the Party Tent is that she will charge half price camping fees, so that means £3.25 per night for adults and a £1 per night for children, for those bringing own tents £6.50 per night per adult £2.00 per child over eight, under eight free. It will work out about £10 per head for us to have the party tent, I haven't included the children in this, so not Ellie and Matthew, Callum or India and Georgia, it will be less if Sue, Jen and Alex join, us I need to pm them to see if they are coming I so hope so ... The Party Tent doesn't have a ground sheet, but I don't think the tipis did either, but Ian has a roll of polythene that we can bring and double it up on the floor, Christine is very excited she is going to put party lights in it, she bought those yesterday too ...

I was pleased to hear about the lights too, as that means electric, I have also asked for a hook up for our tent as then we can use the little fridge, its not huge but it will keep a few things cool. This is my only concern to be honest Matt, I dont think it is anywhere near as big as the marquee would have been, she mentioned 18 foot, we are going there in two weeks time, she was so excited telling me she can't wait to show me it! Thinking about it in bed last night and I am concerned that those who were going to sleep in it, may now think it is a little small, a bit too intimate maybe :confused3 , I suppose another option would be a cheap two man dome tent just to shushy in ?

Yes Nat we had a lovely time, the weather was ok, we were lucky that is just rained when we were in bed. We got there Friday evening and went down to that cafe place where you and I wandered to in the rain, we had fish, chips and peas for £5.00, they also have a bar int there now, it was £2.00 a pint and £6.50 for a bottle of wine. We had a disaster in that the airbed punctured at twenty to three in the morning, so it was like sleeping on rocks! On Saturday, we went into Brecon which is six miles away and got a new airbed, we also found that they had Morrisons, which could be useful if we need more food, booze, ice etc. We planned to have a bbq Saturday night but the Asda charcoal was having none of it, so we ended up using a griddle on the gas stove. Yesterday, we wandered up to the Travellers Rest for lunch, we both has lasagne which was really nice, yesterday evening was spent outside the tent boozing and Ian bbq'd a few bits and pieces which was lovely, we had a really nice time, I have some piccies which I will post later or tomorrow.

I think that worked ok last year Nat, we also discovered a Morrisons just up the road, that we can use if we need to top up. The food was not bad at the site either, fish and chips, pork, steak, chicken etc, they also have a full bar in there now.

Jules,
I've taken a look at the plans for the DIS campout as they've developed on this thread. Your get togethers--last year's and the one being planned now--sound like so much fun. It's got me wondering though about camping in the UK vs. camping in Oklahoma. There never seems to be any discussion about the bears, wolves, coyotes, mountain lions or rattlesnakes. What's up with that?
Susan ;)

Gosh Susan, is this what we would really see in Oklahoma! Ian is quite interested in this, he seems to quite like the idea of seeing so much wildlife, which to me is a little scary. We have sheep, there are lots of sheep in
Tal-y-bont, when we went last week there were lots of cute lambs, by the time we go at the end of May they will have grown into grubby looking sheep.

Fortunately most wildlife is brighter than most campers and give us our own safe distance. Of course, some are lured close by the smell of intriguing human food. With snakes it's more a matter of watching where you're going so that you don't accidentally cross paths. I like the idea of your perhaps being menaced by little lambs on your campout. Kind of an Easter theme. Just need bunnies with colored eggs.

Oh, Jules, I didn't mean that to be insulting. Sometimes cross-cultural jokes don't work so well. From the description of the setting and action in the reports of last year's GGG it seemed to me that UK camping is more pastoral than what I'm used to where I live. And all things considered, with Matt's It's Five O'clock Somewhere rule, it's just as well you don't have to take into account bears and rattlesnakes, I think. Hope you have a ton of fun and wish I could be there. Hugs, Susan

You are not insulting at all Susan, camping in the UK is much more pastoral than what you describe, basically fields, normally a cafe / bar, some shower blocks and lots of opportunity to sit in the sun and drink. I don't think any of the men would be able to save us from your wildlife after 5.00pm :lmao: it's like Nat says we would be bear food. I am sure they would slaughter a lamb to throw on the barbie for us though. I so wish you could be with us too

Did you see the new facilities on the site where we will be. Did you say there was now a shower block and loos there now?
Also will we be able to have a fire? - got to know whether to bring the marshmallows or not
Can't wait - wouldn't it be great if the weather was like this

The new shower block is huge, it is up where the old one was though, not on the field where we are as I was led to believe. It will be finished by the time we are there. As for fires, I suspect not, when we were there, we threw an after dinner log on the bbq, within ten minutes the manager was there checking on it, as the council had apparently had a report that someone was having a campfire. They were great about it, and said that a log burning in a bbq off the ground was fine, I think that this is the only fire we will be able to have, but we had a fair amount of flames going on.
