s l o w does not even begin to describe it!
I know Scott will know this.... and perhaps someone else...
How long will we actually be sitting in the locks while going thru the canal on 5/20. I want to give my daughter an approximate window so HOPEFULLY she can sign on to those cams and download/ print a pic of us going thru. I have sent her links to both Miraflores and Gatun... I plan on emailing her from the ship when we enter so she can sign on and get them... but need to know how long she'll have. I'm assuming it will be a while... maybe 30 minutes or so... but I really have NO idea.
We Arrive At 6 Am And it Is About an 8 hour process...

My in-laws just went on a Panama Canal cruise (Princess) and I saved webcams pics for them. If I remember correctly, the ship will only be in full view of the webcam for approx. 15-20 minutes (30 minutes total if you want pics of just the front or back of the ship). That is for Gatun locks only (the Princess cruise did not go all the way through). I posted another website earlier the has 3 PC locks webcams, port canaveral and cabo webcams - http://www.kroooz-cams.com/custom-viewer.htm - I think this site has the best/fastest refresh. I kept saving pictures as the webcam refreshed and when you play them back in a slideshow it looks really cool - of course I'm easily amused! (http://www.kroooz-cams.com/custom-viewer.htm%20-%20I%20think%20this%20site%20has%20the%20best/fastest%20refresh.I%20kept%20saving%20pictures%20a s%20the%20webcam%20refreshed%20and%20when%20you%20 play%20them%20back%20in%20a%20slideshow%20it%20loo ks%20really%20cool%20-%20of%20course%20I'm%20easily%20amused!)

THANKS DAWN!! That's exactly the info I was looking for. So we have a very small window of time to get those shots. Hopefully she'll be able to hit us during at least one of them! I'll tell her to keep saving as well.. that sounds great. Thanks!!

Is this WI = Wisconsin? If so where are you flying to? I'm here in Madison! Tracy
Yup! Etta lives in Salem--Kenosha county--we made it here a couple hours ago. Fly into MKE whenever we come to visit. Midwest absolutely can't be beat. They had an AWESOME mushroom fritata for breakfast $7....with a spinach sauce, yogurt bowl, and a fruit bowl. They brought back "signature service" from Denver, so we got comfy 1st class seats.
Going to dinner at our fav german restaurant in Kenosha tonight, then relaxing and getting her last minute things packed. Leave at 330 tomorrow for FL....
I packed a suitcase in a suitcase, so I have an extra---wanna ride? :goodvibes
(Dialup stinks!!!) See you all soon---oh, and Margaret? If ya gotta ask, you can't afford it.....I have a standing appt.....love ya!

When we went on our RCCL 2 years ago (right now), we started entering the 1st set of locks at about 7:50 a.m. We were scheduled at 7:30 a.m. We arrived about 4 a.m. and the captain started pumping out the water from the ship (whatever it's called) because we were on the AFT and it was noisy, even up on deck 10 in our stateroom. It took over an hour to go through the first set of locks. Hook you up, get the mule trains, start putting water in once the locks close, raise you up, open up and move on to the next set of locks. It was quite a lengthy process.
My suggestion is that you have your daughter check our live thread the night before and once we get the official time in our navigator and the captain makes some sort of announcement (because it is a big thing); that we post on the live thread the approximate "official" time we are suppose to enter the first lock. Then that will give everyone an idea of when to look at the CAM and to get us pictures!

Okay... another redundant question that I know has been discussed but who knows what was going on that I didn't pay attention properly!
What was the consensus about a pickup time in LA? For those of you getting van or limo service to DL... what time did you tell them to pick you up? We don't want to miss any of the festivities at the port.. but also don't want to stand around once things are over. We were thinking about a 10:30AM pickup... does that sound too late?? Any input will be appreciated. Yes, we have procrastinated on this big time and have not arranged anything yet.

I just got a hug from our dear son, who told me to rest and he would do the housecleaning while we're gone! He's such a sweetheart! I sure wish we could take him with us, but he's saving his money to buy a car and said his priority has to be that right now. I'm very proud of him!

i just called the budget office in long beach and was told they do not pick up at the port and do not offere refind of taxi service.
Make sure you were calling the "LG2" location. That location does indeed have a courtesy shuttle. However, keep in mind that the car rental office is not conveniently located... it is about a 15 minute drive from the port.
They have a shuttle... they may not refund the taxi service if the shuttle is running. When we got into San Pedro a couple of years ago, we were off about 30 minutes before the FIRST shuttle would even run and they were kind enough to reimburse the cab farr (after first calling them). I wouldn't bank on it though.
Honestly, with the mass of humanity coming off the boat and the number of people that are going to be getting cars... it may be easier to pick a different alternative and let someone else do the driving (Supershuttle/Execucar for instance). At least that way you know that they will ensure capacity. Budget may have a car for you.. but you could find it a challenge if they only have one or at the best.. two vans running that morning. That is what pushed us to book Execucar this time.
For those of you who were thinking of Supershuttle/Execucar.. there is a discount code out on the Americawest.com web site that will get you either $3 off the shuttle or $5 off the private car. Heck... that's at least one more drink of the day!

We booked a rental car with Enterprise. They have a location at/near the port with free shuttle service and you can return the car to LAX for an extra $25. The port location is closed Sunday & Monday. We paid $41 (plus $25 for airport drop-off) for two-day rental of a standard car. Make sure you tell them you are the Disney cruise to get the special rate. The phone number to the San Pedro location is 310-548-8060 - they are very nice to deal with.

Enterprise rental is so great.
I like Enterprise also.
But we rented from Hertz. In Ft. Lauderdale to the Port and they are not charging a drop off fee in Cape Canaveral.
Then in San Pedro and dropping off in LAX, without a drop off fee. The rental with the other car rentals companys were the same as Hertz w/o the drop off fee.
Plus we will get 500 FF miles for each rental.
Using all my FF miles to travel first class to Hawaii on Sept. 27th. Can't beat flying first class on a long trip like that.

What is 'airborne' and where do I get some??? After work tomorrow I'm going to do my last minute shopping at Walmart or something like that... would they have it? (sniffle, sneeze, cough, whine...)

We recommend the vastly superior Lemon Lime flavor. But others, I won't mention Bonzie1's name, think the yucky orange flavor is better.
Trust me. Would I lead you astray? If I know that room 7348 is the furthest room from the Front Desk, would that help?

Choices
The greatest challenges you’ll ever find,
Will always occur within the mind.
They’ll not be between the good and the bad,
For the bad choice will always make you sad.
But choosing between the better or less
This will cause you much more stress
For there’s many a choice with uncertain end,
And few are the moments to put them in
But of all the choices you will ever make
The great, the small or for other’s sake
During times of peace or strong opposition
The worse choice of all, .. is indecision
What do you think? :confused3

So, go out right now... really, please don't delay.

Well only one more day tommorrow to work and then it's - I'm on Vacation. Busy day today for us worked about 6 hours, went with Diana to her Doctor, insurance switched labs so they would not process her tests, so no results today, so they redrew blood and now has to wait till we get back in June for test results. Thankfully for nothing serious, and now no worries on the cruise.
Then off to the Pin Trading session in Elmhurst tonight, while there get a phone call that her niece who is 7 1/2 months pregnant is in the hospital with contractions. They are giving her medicine to stop them. So back down town to Rush to see her, just got home at 11:00 pm. Had to finish packing so Diana can spend day with her tommorrow, and hopefully she gets out of the hospital before we leave since us and her sister are the only family in town as her Mom lives in Dallas.
Never fails something comes up whenever a trip is planned.
Hope tommorrow is slower and everything comes out ok.
Good Night and safe travels to everyone traveling today and tommorrow.

I'm wondering where I am going to put all of my empty luggage.
Maybe we should have all chipped in on an extra room for stuff like that.
Lift your bed on the boat, my supersized suitcase fits just fine, just doesn't slide under. The bed it light enough for the average person to lift it.
You can fit inside my suitcase if that gives you any idea how big it is!

CRUISE SOUVENIR DVD
*************************************************
Here's the list I have so far of people who would either be interested in purchasing (at cost) a DVD souvenir of the cruise and/or would be willing to send me their photos and video footage for its creation. Depending on what all I receive in the way of materials, I'd estimate this being completed some time in July. If you want to be sure you're contacted along the way, please email (nejthelion@earthlink.net) or PM me. Please don't just post a message to the thread because I'm afraid I'll miss someone.
NOTE: This is for interest/involvement/contact only. Orders will be taken at a later date once I can set the price. Also, I can use still photos and VHS/Hi-8 footage as well - not limited to digital media.

OKAY... now about Airborne... and Friendships!!!
There are those who like orange, :earsboy: while others like lime. :earboy2:
They don't taste the same, BUT they both work just fine. :teeth:
It's a personal preference. Don't even ask why. :confused3
Just hurry and get some. The sooner you buy
The germs will all run. Yes, they'll all go away.
So, go out right now... really, please don't delay.
ALL of us must be healthy. We've waited SO LONG.
Through all of these posts, we've been singing our song.
"We're taking the MAGIC from the EAST to the WEST" :Pinkbounc
Our journey's the FIRST one. We're almost obsessed
With Walmart, and Jammies, and flipflops with lights. :rotfl2:
Our friendships have helped us to all reach new heights.
May 14th is coming. The day will be here.
We'll all see each other and send up a cheer. :jumping1:
I for one am quite greatful for all my new friends.
This journey we've started, through time will transend. :lovestruc
See everyone soon! :wave2:

Happy and safe travels to all of you.
Don't know if they have internet access at Ron Jons but if they do I will check in when we get there.
This has been a ball following all of your posts...even If I haven't posted alot it's made this cruise much more special. Looking forward to seeing all of you somewhere..at the hotel, in the parking lot, in the security line, at the buffet, at the sailaway..somewhere.
See you on the boat folks....I really think this will be a vacation that will be remembered for years to come. Thanks again to all of you....

I am done packing. The clothes were pretty quick, it's everything else that will take forever. I have a few things in a box that we need to take...binoculars, snorkel goggles, etc. Have to find a safe home for them to fly in, then I'm done.
Having a problem figuring out where to put my litho tube...
I sooooo hope we don't all have to be strip searched with SSSS on our boarding passes since we are flying one way. I will not be happy if that happens.
Waiting for 3 more hours then I can check in for our flight. I guess no sleep tonight, good thing noting big at work...

I still have a paper to finish and I need to organize our documents and my school stuff. I will be completing our sail away gifts on the ship...
I think I will be purchasing a printer in Florida- my "travel" printer got kicked out for clothing and shoes- both of which I have too much of. I'm tempted to go down and force myself to remove three pairs of shoes and three outfits.....

I have four suitcases and two overnight bags covering the floors of my living room. We're spreading clothes out for four of us in each of those bags so that if one bag gets lost, there is not one person out all of their clothes. Problem is, I can't remember what I've packed for which person in which bag. Someone will most likely get to the ship without some of their essentials. :cool1: I envy those of you who are all packed. I always have visions of my being packed the day before the ship and wind up still cramming things in suitcases with 5 minutes to go. :rotfl:
Hope all of you who haven't left already have good weather to travel and that your trip to the port is stress-free. :)

Oh A QUESTION to anyone who is still here!
Postcards... foreign ports... how do we mail them? Does the Magic have foreign stamps... must we find a post office? Do we just wait til we get to LA to mail them!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
In the past DCL has not provided foreign port stamps...only Castaway Cay, where you still have to get to the Post Office to buy stamps and mail postcards...
I'm looking for a solution to this problem, too. Most foreign ports are not too accessible and forget taxis and Cash, the Wonder Dog...
Last December one of the nearby stateroom residents took my postcards with theirs to mail...and also picked up some at each port where I could not find a postcard seller. Every time they bought postcards they picked up a few extra for me in case I couldn't get some...especially for the excursions I couldn't take because of no scooter access...Nice people. Holland America, on the other hand, had stamps, local postcards for each port visited and would mail postcards for you...Well, DCL?

I'm here too... Just way busy yesterday going to D'land with family for Blake's 6th birthday. Had a GREAT time, but it was VERY crowded... Went on the new Buzz Lightyear ride, very cool, and new to us Winnie the Pooh, very cute.
Got me in the mood for a cruise. I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready...
BUT, we're on United on Friday too... :sad2: Have a back up plan in place - but that would entail MANY hours in MANY airports...

Okay, I think I'm packed. I've had four hours of sleep.

We have had good luck with postcards and mailing from different ports.we ask in the postcard shops (trinket places) and they usually sell stamps right there...then they direct us to a mailbox.

I don't know how I am going to be ready in time. I have had obstacle after obstacle this week. At one point I told my DH that it would be so much easier to just skip the cruise so that I could stay home to take care of my sick son (severe asthma), attend jury duty and work (person who was to cover for me is not doing it now). His response, "You have to go. You made all of those gifts, bought the shirts and we met all of those people at dinner on Saturday!" No mention of money, the planning for over a year, or the fact that I have worked for over a year straight with no day off from work. I hope to see you all on Saturday.

They could not find a reservation - BUT EVENTUALLY we did - someone had us as pick up ------ get this --------THE DATE AFTER THE CRUISE - NOW WOULD I RENT THE CAR AFTER WE CRUISE.......... NOT NOT
But we found it and as an added plus, they only are charging us for a one day's rental instead of two
So, we are starting off in a good way - So I left a happy camper from Hertz

Oh How sorry I am you're facing all of this! DH + I actually discussed not going. He never brought up the $ either... I had this past week all planned on how I was going to finish up... one can never plan for obstacles... or for so many of them. I wanted everything perfect. Now it looks like, if I make the ship at all, that will be my miracle! Celeste, what size shoes do you wear? Maybe an event should have been for a clothes swap so we each wouldn't have worried about all these outfits :rotfl2:

Lynn is running around the room here at SSR with her blinkie Flippy Floppy thingies flashing away.
OK to get to Room 3225 is pretty simple. Ask for directions at the Security Kiosk, if you are diving - As you enter SSR and are driving towards the main group of buildings, the center of the resort (spa, pool, check in etc will be on your right, you will drive past the main pool area (it will be on your right) and there will be a bus stop on your left, continue ahead and turn left into the first parking lot on your left. The building we are in is part of the springs, and is where rooms 3101 -3436 are located. It is directly across the road from the theater. We are on the second floor, just as you get to the top of the stairs, or exit the elevator. My cell phone number is 307-690-1235, if you need assistance. If you have a GPS the Lat and Long is N 28’ 23.195 and W 81’ 31.084. The main part of our building the green, with the ends painted blue.
Not sure we got the message set correctly on the room phone as there were no instructions as to how to set it up.
Actually slept last night, Lynn did set an alarm so I could get up and run, Sadly the alarm was set for Mountain Time, so we slept.
Met Ken and Shari and her brother for breakfast at POFQ, and then met Renae during her break. The excitement is contagious. Renae said she met Amy and Steve this morning.
Bob, yeah right train with a 100 mile person, maybe on a bike.
Deb, and anyone else please feel free o just stop by any time we will be here most of the afternoon from about 2:00 on.
Great poem Georgie. Also foreign postage must be found locally, a lot of the rubber tomahawk (tourist) shops will sell cards and stamps.

All the packing is done and I think that I have tied up all of my "loose ends" with work. I did manage to cram ten pair of shoes in my suitcases as well--very odd for me as I normally live in Birkies all summer. Add me to the new haircut list also--I had twelve inches cut off last week!!

Some food for thought for those of us who are still stuck at work and will most likely endure the Rush Hour traffic on the way home....
The ship's cruising speed is 21.5 knots; its maximum speed is 24 knots. Which translates to 24.725mph and a maximum of 27.6mph.
So... as you sit in traffic tonight stressing about how slow things are moving.. just remember that in less than 48 hours your maximum speed will never even top 30 MPH and you won't have a care in the world about it!

Wow!!! All these shoes! I'm sure I will be out-fashioned by everyone :rotfl2: Usually I will match everything! This time, just to get on board will be a feat!
So glad to hear everyone is on their way and packed up. It sounds like there have been several mini meets already! I am taking a break for a few hours. Hoping the rest will help.
Thanks for the info on stamps! It won't make any difference if I forget my address list! :rotfl2:
Georgie - did you mean "feat" or "feet"? Ha ha! Shoes? Feet? Get it? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

NEWS ALERT! NEWS ALERT! NEWS ALERT!
Disney Cruise Line announces that they will not have limited edition pins on board. Apparently some engineer miscalculated and the gross weight of the ship will be over the maximum for the Canal. However, it has been calculated that if they eliminate all the pins... they can just barely make it. Apparently those hub cap pins just put them over!
OKAY... JUST KIDDING...
Definitely going to be interesting watching the Magic squeeze through the canal as she is already at the maximum girth of 106 feet and the length fits by just one foot! Here's hoping they don't scratch her!

Hey all, just finished the final update on the list. I think it is all current except for one or two pictures that I didn't get posted.
I had absolutely no idea the list would ever grow to the size it did (or I would have found a much better way to do it, trust me).
Jeff... Thanks for doing the list... I'm afraid to check it out :rotfl: Hope I'm not too far behind! ;)
Your list was a life saver.

I'm down to my last couple of hours of work! Woo hoo! I can't believe trip time is here! It seemed so far away for so long, and now it's rushed up so quickly! I don't know what happened to the time!

SUCH A TRUE STATEMENT - I think EVERYONE ON THIS SITE needs a hugh round of applause for all the work that has been done for us by everyone.
Many activities are planned and in such good order and completion. Now all we have to do is go and have a blast --
I, myself, would like to THANK EVERYONE for EVERYTHING - and I just think that our group
IS THE VERY BEST AROUND - nothing held back

Ok the final updates are done. I've gotten all but 1 or 2 pictures onto the list.
I had absolutely no idea the list would ever grow to the size it did (or I would have found a much better way to do it, trust me). I printed up magnets for those who did not submit information (Just to make sure no one was left out).
Tomorrow should be fun. Final packing, a quick trip to the MK to make it a kingdom to kingdom cruise and off to my dads for hopefully a bit of sleep.
I'll happily be at the port very early, complete with pirate flag, reposition this shirt and what not. Grab me in line and I'll start magnet distribution.
I have printed about a dozen copies of the master list. One will go on my stateroom door with updates, changes, upgrades, downgrades and notations of which port which disboarder got drunk and missed the ship at.
I'll hand out the other copies on a first come/first serve basis. Please do not take one unless you need it.
I'm also trying to find a small magnetic whiteboard for my stateroom door. I should have it tonight (Quick trip to target, once the lawn is mowed) and people can feel free to use that to leave me notes, comments, changes, updates etc.
Oh well. That should do it. Its been a long strange trip, and its sure been fun getting here.

I can't locate a Hertz location in San Pedro on their website. Do you have contact info? Or are they just offering free shuttle?
I called them a few weeks ago (I'd like the FF miles, too) and they were more expensive.
One more day of work for me!! :badpc:
I like Enterprise also.
But we rented from Hertz. In Ft. Lauderdale to the Port and they are not charging a drop off fee in Cape Canaveral.
Then in San Pedro and dropping off in LAX, without a drop off fee. The rental with the other car rentals companys were the same as Hertz w/o the drop off fee.
Plus we will get 500 FF miles for each rental.
Using all my FF miles to travel first class to Hawaii on Sept. 27th. Can't beat flying first class on a long trip like that.

Choices
The greatest challenges you’ll ever find,
Will always occur within the mind.
They’ll not be between the good and the bad,
For the bad choice will always make you sad.
But choosing between the better or less
This will cause you much more stress
For there’s many a choice with uncertain end,
And few are the moments to put them in
But of all the choices you will ever make
The great, the small or for other’s sake
During times of peace or strong opposition
The worse choice of all, .. is indecision
What do you think? :confused3
Hmmmm I don't know.. I can't make up my mind.....:rotfl2: :rotfl2: sorry, just couldn't resist that...

Okay--I'm at work---don't know why------being doing my DIS stuff ALL DAY LONG!
It is now 3:30 p.m. Parents arrived an hour ago and DH picked them up at the airport!
OKAY HERE'S THE LATEST!!!
The mini-navigators are done and going to print as I type. I APOLOGIZE in advance if I missed anyone's special day, switch in room assignment, or just someone screwed up and just left you out. SORRY! I tried my best! Our "little" mini navigator is about 20 pages!
Okay, with that said and done--
I'll be handing them out tomorrow night at Scott's as well as at the terminal Saturday a.m. I would like to get as many passed out before we board the ship to save Zazu's Crew from delivery to all the fish!! :rotfl2:
Just report in to me (just ask where the Girl Scout cookies are at the terminal) and you will find me. I will have your Mini-Navigator packet in an envelope with your stateroom number in it. I am printing about 25 extras just in case.
All I can say is I can't wait to get on the airplane tomorrow and leave all the other stuff here at home! At least if I forget something at this point I can buy it when I get there!
I'll see some of you tomorrow! (And I apologize in advance if I forget some of your names.....right now everything is just a BIG BLUR!
...................AND I STILL HAVE TO PACK AND FINISH PUTTING PACKETS TOGETHER!!!!

For all who mailed packages to the ship...please check the tracking report to see that the packages have arrived...AND, print the tracking report for your carry-on bag. If a package has disappeared, Heaven forbid, you will need to prove you sent it, who signed for it and when it arrived...
A similar problem occurred on the 10-day cruise (with REAS) and DCL was less than cooperative when it came to granting REAS benefits without a receipt, as they had no record of it and the travel agency was closed. :flower:

OK - THIS IS NO WAY TO START A VACATION
DH WENT BOWLING TONIGHT AT 5 PM AND I TOLD HIM TO TAKE MY CAR SINCE WE HAVE EVERYTHING READY and packed and I backed his car into the driveway - and away he went in my car.
He calls 15 minutes later - he was rear ended by two cars. Now I have to deal with my car when I get back and put in shop.
Not a way to start my vacation.
He says he is okay, but you know how the aches and pains come later. Now I have to make sure he stays well while we are away.
I am so upset. At least he didn't have to go to the ER - I have to be thankful for that.

Some trivia for Peter (Peter I hope you find this :wave2: ) that my friend emailed me:
Here are some interesting Disneyland facts, to prepare you, for the
upcoming visit of your Disney fan friends.
Subject: Disneyland - 50 little-known facts
for when you have time to read them all..
1. Disneyland's original Tinker Bell was a 71-year-old Hungarian circus
performer named Tiny Kline. The first to fly off the top of the
Matterhorn on a zip line, she previously worked as a stunt aerialist,
hanging from a flying airplane by her teeth.
2. High up inside the hollow Matterhorn, there's a basketball court.
It's part of an employee break room. Los Angeles Lakers' center Vlade
Divac has been up there to shoot hoops.
3. Many of the faces of the pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean are
modeled on those of the "Imagineers" (Disneyspeak for the park's artists
and engineers) who created the ride. There's evidence one face was
modeled on Walt Disney's.
4. Ron Ziegler, Richard Nixon's press secretary during the Watergate
scandal, once worked as a skipper on the Jungle Cruise ride.
5. The spooky voice that narrates the Haunted Mansion ride is that of
the Pillsbury Doughboy. An actor named Paul Frees, who was to Disney
what Mel Blanc was to Warner Brothers, supplied the voices for both, as
well as many of the pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean and most of the
characters in "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln" (except Abe himself). He
was also the voice of John Lennon in the old Beatles cartoons and Boris
Badenov.
6. The sailing ship Columbia, which is supposed to be a replica of the
first U.S. ship to circumvent the globe, actually was built in large
part from the plans for the HMS Bounty, of mutiny fame. Disney's
shipbuilders couldn't find plans for the original Columbia, so they
relied heavily on those of Capt. Bligh's ship, which had similar
dimensions.
7. Children's Fairyland in Oakland was one of the major inspirations for
Disneyland. Walt Disney even hired Fairyland's first director, Dorothy
Manes, to work at his park.
8. From groundbreaking to opening, Disneyland was built in just 365
days.
9. Perhaps inevitably, Opening Day -- July 17, 1955 -- was a disaster.
Asphalt poured just hours before guests arrived hadn't fully dried, and
women's spiked heels sunk into Main Street. VIP passes were widely
counterfeited, and double the expected number of people showed up. Rides
broke down. Because of a plumber's strike, Walt Disney had to choose
between drinking fountains and bathrooms. He opted for the latter,
telling a reporter, "People can buy Pepsi-Cola, but they can't pee in
the street."
10. Fittingly, one of the original Tomorrowland attractions was Crane's
Bathroom of Tomorrow.
11. Frank Sinatra showed up on Opening Day and took a spin around
Autopia.
12. Disneyland cost $17 million to build in 1955, about $116 million in
today's dollars. The Space Mountain ride, which opened in 1977, cost
more than half that amount (in constant dollars.)
13. ABC was one of the original financial backers, and for years owned a
share of the park. Now, of course, the Walt Disney Co. owns ABC.
14. On Opening Day, Walt Disney had his gardeners cover up bare patches
of dirt by replanting weeds from the parking lot and labeling them with
long, horticultural-sounding names.
15. Disneyland is home to feral cats -- nobody knows how many -- that
come out at night, after visitors leave. Years ago, more than 100 were
discovered living inside Sleeping Beauty's castle.
16. If the voice of the droid-pilot in Star Tours sounds a little like
Pee-wee Herman, it's because both are voiced by comedian Paul Reubens.
17. At least three babies have been born at Disneyland.
18. Walt Disney kept a 600-square-foot studio apartment above the
firehouse on Main Street. It's maintained as a shrine to the park's
founder and kept just as he left it, with Victorian antiques, red velvet
carpeting and a device for making grilled cheese sandwiches. Outsiders
are rarely allowed inside. A light shines from the window at all times
as a symbol of Disney's eternal presence.
19. Untold thousands of the old A, B, C, D and E tickets are still in
circulation, moldering away in people's drawers. From time to time
guests still show up at the park with them, and they're given the face
value of the ticket. (At their most expensive, individual E tickets went
for 95 cents.) A better bet is to sell them on eBay, where they fetch
many times that amount.
20. On Splash Mountain, high-spirited women sometimes lift their blouses
for the cameras that snap souvenir pictures. These girls-gone-wild
photos are usually destroyed by park employees, but more than a dozen
were smuggled out and posted on an Internet site called "Flash
Mountain."
21. As a teenager, Steve Martin worked in Merlin's Magic Shop in
Fantasyland.
22. Walt Disney wanted to populate the Jungle Cruise with live animals,
but zoologists convinced him they'd be asleep during most park hours. In
the early days, though, live alligators were kept in a pen near the
turnstiles; they occasionally escaped into the lagoon.
23. In New Orleans Square, near the Pirates of the Caribbean exit, a
door marked "33" leads to an ultra-secret, ultra-exclusive private club.
Club 33 is the only place in the park that serves alcohol (including a
Chardonnay specially bottled for the club by Fess "Davy Crockett"
Parker.) Its 480 members pay an initiation fee of from $8,000 to
$27,000, and yearly dues of $4, 000 to $15,000. The current waiting list
for membership is said to be seven years long.
24. An early Tomorrowland attraction was Monsanto's House of the Future,
made entirely of plastic. It had the requisite picture phone and other
Jetsonsonian appliances, but the most talked-about feature, according to
"Mouse Tales," was the microwave oven. "Nobody believed you could bake a
potato in 3 minutes," said attendant Dick Mahoney. Years later, when
Disneyland tried to tear down the plastic house, the wrecking ball just
bounced off it.
25. On Star Tours, the short, squat robots you pass while waiting in
line are the audio-animatronic ducks from the old "America Sings"
attraction, with their feathers and skin yanked off. One still has its
webbed feet.
26. To create the illusion of size on Main Street, designers made the
ground-floor buildings nine-tenths scale, the second floors
seven-eighths and the third floors five-eighths.
27. Sleeping Beauty's Castle is based largely on "Mad King" Ludwig's
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, but with one big difference: The top
is on backward. Disney didn't want it to look too much like the real
thing.
28. Originally, Mr. Toad did not appear in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, nor did
Peter Pan or Snow White feature in their own rides. Disney's idea was
that riders would view these attractions from the lead character's point
of view. Hardly anyone understood this concept, and now each character
makes a brief appearance.
29. If you buy a Mickey balloon and it pops or flies away while you're
in the park, they'll give you a new one -- as long as you've got a
receipt.
30. Late at night, on rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean and It's a
Small World, amorous couples regularly try to make the Happiest Place on
Earth even a little happier. They're apparently unaware that virtually
every inch of every ride is observed by security cameras or hidden
employees. Sometimes they're startled by a warning from a loudspeaker;
occasionally they're greeted at the exit by applauding employees.
31. In the early days, Walt Disney had an agreement with the city of
Anaheim that no outside buildings could be tall enough to be visible
from within the park.
32. At the end of the Star Tours ride, just as your Starspeeder is about
to crash into a fuel truck, a man in the control booth ducks down, then
stands up and picks up the phone. The man is George Lucas.
33. Ron Dominguez, the top executive from 1971 to 1994, grew up on one
of the Anaheim orange groves purchased by Disney for the park. "My house
was right about where the grist mill on Tom Sawyer's Island is now," he
said. Dominguez spent his entire career at the park, starting as a
ticket-taker on Opening Day and working his way up to the top spot.
34. The names painted in gold leaf on second-story windows along Main
Street are Disneyland's Hall of Fame. They honor important people in the
park's history, usually with an inside joke. Dominguez's window, for
example, reads, "Orange Grove Property Mgt. -- We Care For Your Property
As If It Were Our Own."
35. Attractions that never made it off the drawing board: Lilliputian
Land, a Monstro the Whale water slide and, according to Mouse Tales, a
"child- sized medieval torture chamber."
36. There were no A, B, C, etc., coupons when Disneyland opened.
Instead, visitors bought carnival-style tickets from booths in front of
each attraction. When the lettered coupons were introduced in late 1955,
C was the highest level. D tickets didn't come until the following year,
and E tickets until 1959.
37. Conspicuously missing on Opening Day: the Matterhorn. In its place
was a two-story-high pile of dirt from the excavation of the castle
moat. It was billed as "Lookout Mountain." The Matterhorn didn't open
until 1959.
38. Tomorrowland was originally meant to represent the futuristic year
of 1986, when Halley's comet was due to make its next appearance.
39. The soundtrack on Space Mountain, "Aquarium" from Saint-Saens'
"Carnival Des Animaux," is played by 1960s surf guitar legend Dick Dale.
40. Nikita Krushchev was never turned away at the front gate by Walt
Disney, as is popularly believed. Disney was eager to show the Soviet
premier his submarine fleet, at the time the world's sixth largest. It
was the U.S. State Department that nixed the visit, saying security
wasn't adequate.
41. It's a Small World was originally built for the 1964 New York
World's Fair. It was later boxed up and shipped to Anaheim, where it
reopened in 1967. People who rode it in New York, including this writer,
have had that song stuck in their heads three years longer than everyone
else. (Other New York World's Fair attractions that migrated west:
"Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln," the G.E. Carousel of Progress and the
robotic dinosaurs you pass on the Disneyland Railroad.)
42. The telegraph in the New Orleans Square railroad station continually
taps out part of Walt Disney's Opening Day speech in a variant of Morse
Code once used by railroads. For years it had it slightly wrong, until
an amateur ham radio operator deciphered it and discovered the mistake.
In the park's early days, according to "101 Things," the telegraph
tapped out a "ribald message." It was quickly changed after Disney
casually mentioned that his wife knew Morse Code.
43. Main Street is based in large part on the town of Marceline, Mo.,
where Walt Disney spent part of his childhood -- a whistle stop on the
old Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe rail line between Chicago and Kansas
City. The town named a swimming pool and elementary school after its
most famous son. The latter is the only place outside Disneyland
authorized to fly the official Disneyland flag.
44. When it opened in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean used real human
skeletons as props. In an upcoming book, Imagineer Jason Surrell writes,
"Because the original Imagineering team felt that the faux skeletons of
the period were just too unconvincing, the grotto sequence originally
featured real human remains obtained from the UCLA Medical Center. The
skeletons were later returned to their countries of origin and given a
proper burial."
45. It's widely believed that the horse-drawn hearse parked outside the
Haunted Mansion was the one used to carry Mormon leader Brigham Young to
his burial place. But this is one of many urban legends associated with
Disneyland. No hearse was used at Young's funeral.
46. Designers frequently leave their signatures on attractions. On Star
Tours, the lettering on the industrial pipes near the entrance are the
initials and telephone extensions of the creators; on It's a Small
World, one of the dolls wears the signature poncho of designer Mary
Blair.
47. The Disneyland-Alweg Monorail was the first daily operating monorail
in the Western Hemisphere.
48. The unforgettable -- no matter how hard you try -- theme song for
It's a Small World was written by the same team, Richard and Robert
Sherman, who wrote the Annette Funicello novelty hit "Pineapple
Princess." (They also penned many Oscar-nominated songs for Disney
movies.)
49. When you enter the Star Tours ride, a voice over the loudspeaker
asks for an "Egroeg Sacul" to come to the booth. That's "George Lucas"
spelled backward.
50. Once and for all, Walt Disney is not frozen cryogenically at
Disneyland or anywhere else. He did have an interest in the technology,
but he is in fact spending eternity at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale.

Oh Kay, I'm so sorry to hear about your DH! One more thing you guys didn't need... If (when) the aches and pains come, tell him to get in the hot tub with ice packs on, and he'll forget all about it... at least we hope so.

Yikes Kay! That's terrible. I hope that he doesn't start hurting. If he does, park him in a hot tub and we'll take turns bringing him drinks. ;)
That was a fun list Robin. :flower:

I'm still here! I nearly have *everything* packed. Just have the electronics and 'junk' bag left. I'll do that in the morning. Oh, and the overnight at MCO bag, too.
I think we'll head over to Downtown Disney or the Boardwalk around dinner tomorrow. I've never been to the Boardwalk and want to check it out. Then, Hyatt for the night and over to port!
Good luck everyone!

Just my tale of woe for the night................
So glad your hubby is okay..what a scare..not exactly what you both need tonight ! We are still kicking around here...just waiting to go..I think its going to be another sleepless night..reading the boards makes time go abit faster..at least I know we are not the only ones still at home..will say good-bye alittle later...sharon
