Ok...now that the excitements worn off...and the tomtom is charged...3 immediate problems...IT WONT CHARGE!!!!! It runs without the key, and its only up 5mph...totaling 17mph!!! the 17mph I can deal with because it beats the hell out of 11!!!, but Im nervous about someone jumping on it and taking off without the key....and if it doesnt charge....well, I guess I wont have to worry about someone driving off with it if its dead!!!

08-20-2008, 11:00 AM
17 mph, wow, that is about 14 more than mine. I am sure a quick call to the controller company and you will get the little wiring snag worked out. Post the prob on bgw, they will help.

Ok...after racking my brain over what STUPIDITY I was guilty of this time...I realized the the big fat red wire that goes from the rear of the charging plug should probably not just be dangling and not hooked up to ANYTHING!!!! SO Ive got the charging problem fixed(god...I never cease to amaze my self with the level of retardation I have the ability to obtain). I still cant figure out why it runs when the key is in the off position....obviously I spiced into the key switch...but thats exactly where the instructions said to do it...guess I'll be calling alltrax today....I hate admitting to techs that Im an idiot....I dont mind writing it on a daily basis to you guys...but on the phone to a tech is a different story. ALso...Im thinking of upgrading my 6 gauge wires to 4 gauge...does anyone think that may increase my speed by another mile per hour or so?

nice..... The reason we were told to upgrade the wires was for the heat thing, i can't remember what put us over the edge on that, the motor or the controller. funny enough, 4JUL we overheated (melted) the FNR switch. Part of that was the lack of h20 in the batteries I guess.
who does your seats?
tungpo1
08-20-2008, 02:15 PM
When you upgrade your controller to a 400amp or higher, you should always go to 4ga. wires the heat is way too much for the standard 6ga.

I got my cable at advance auto parts, it was about $1.80 a foot. It is 2 gauge "monster" style cable. Clear rubber cover. I bought solder on ends and used shrink tube to cover up the ends. It works great, it doesn't get above ambient temp, when the stock wires get about 150 degrees or more. I have one of those IR thermometers. You can see some of them in the pic here, I only replaced the ones that needed it, but since it looks like I can't get rid of the dang thing I may replace them all.

It is pulled way up with the front end into the woods. There is a cable lock on the steering wheel and it looks like a vine is growing on it. I wonder how long it's been there and why! .:confused3

Doesn't the seat get hot with the motor under it?
How fast does it run?
How much does it weight?
I remember that you made the body out of a real Chevy.
Why haven't we seen it at Ft. Wilderness?

All he did was the motor upgrade for someone. If I remember right. My cart has a gas motor under the seat (as all gas carts do) and the seat never gets warm.

If you google "chevy golf cart kit" you'll find several dealers who sell the body kits. They run about $3000...yes thats just the body. There are lots of different body style kits available, My favorite has always been the ROADSTER
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/CaliforniaRoadsterTopImage.jpg
but at those prices, I have as much of a chance of buying a real Roadster!!!
The kits arent quite as cool as the one Tungpo installed the big block into because that one is an ACTUAL 57 body chopped down to fit the cart frame, but they are pretty darn cool none the less. This is one from a site called http://www.customcarts.com

I believe the one that Tungpo1 used was a '55. I actually like the tail lights of the '56 way better than the '57, but I may just be different. I also like the front end better too.

It might get a little warm when running it for a long time but not that bad.
Never clocked the speed but I guessing around 35 mph maybe a few more, but loads of torque
Someone else did the body I just took out that warn Kawasaki 9HP and put a 23HP vanguard in it. into it LOL OH plus I lifted it.
Haven't seen it at the Fort because I guess the owners don't go;)

If you do, I recommend the rustoleum metallic finish chome, the other ones I tried looked to silver.
The Green is actually metallic and looks alot better in person.
I have a piece of Diamond Plate to make a dash out of but, I waiting to replace my batteries before I put that in.
Before you ask what batteries have to do with the dash, I'm changing from
6- 8volts to 4- 12 volts. This should give me the room to mount the speakers on either side of the F-R switch on the seat.
I'll lose run time but, I would like to say for the Fort it will be fine...
Mike I like the silver under side also. But why not lift the front of the cart:confused3
The reasoning of only lifting the rear comes from two parts..
PART 1. I've reverted back to my younger days when I wanted to fix up my car.
Step 1, install a stereo, it doesn't have to be pretty but it has to be there and sound decent ( you'd be surprised how good you can make junk sound ).
Step 2, paint something on the motor chrome, we like shiney things and we can't help ourselves ( not to mention the extra 20 hp chrome provides:lmao: )
Step 3, Jack it up,,,,,, for cars, air shocks have always been my prefered media for this, and just because it's a golf cart I decided to go with what I know..
After this you may get rims, glass packs or paint but, only after a stereo upgrade ( EQ with lots of lights,,,did I mention an attraction to shiney:lmao: )
PART 2, Lisa said I can't spend that much on it yet:rolleyes1
BigDaddyRog

:lmao:...Mike...I would swear you grew up in Metairie, LA!!!! We SWORE that a simple car wash would make your car go 20mph faster because it would lessen the wind drag!!! Solid Centerline Mags with 50s on the back, and Suicides on the front meant you had to brace yourself from sliding into the windshield from the front seat, but that was cool!!! A chrome airfilter cover was all you really needed to prove you were a real mechanic, but if you got the manifold covers as well...you were a wrenching GOD. No upholstery was complete without ductape. No matter how cold it was the windows went down so everyone could hear what cassette you were jamming to. Autozone were the new guys...but Western Auto had always been there for us, and we werent real sure Autozones cheap stereo components were going to be as good as WesternAutos cheap stereo components...where else could you get a set of 6x9s for $8.99??? It wasnt completely uncommon to have a set of humongus house speakers in the trunk rigged for quick connection for the parties in some parking lot somewhere on a Friday or Saturday night!!....Oh, and the car RAN faster if you only put $2 of gas in at a time....all that extra weight from TOO MUCH GAS just slowed ya down...and the fumes always found their way into the car when it was too full!!!

Chrome doesn't make you go faster!!! Come on, everyone knows the "triple" wiper blades with the little wings, and clothes hanger for the radio antenna make you go faster. And you don't use air shocks to jack the back of the car up to look good, you use them to keep the car level when the trunk is full of sandbags for traction in the winter.....

Does anyone ( and by anyone I probably mean Ron ) know what king of runtime I would get from 4-125 ah 12 volt batteries in the cart. I want to go from 6-8volts to 4 12 volts but I don't want to strand myself somewhere. We only use the cart at the Fort so, it doesn't get alot of continuous use between charges , on a busy day it might get 1 or 2 hours total between charges . This ony happens if we take alot of time looping.I I know that they have higher ah batteries but, the price starts to get up there. For me to add 200-250 ah batts, I coould just about sell the current cart, add the money I woud spend on batteries and buy a gasser.. This is only from the limited price info I can find. The bigger batteries seem to run $200- $350.

Thanks for the response, I didn't mention that our cart is 48 volt so to run 6 volt batts, I would have to have 8 Batteries. I understand that more batts make for longer runtime. The reason I was asking is I was hoping to downsize to 4 batteries so I would have the room to install my speakers in the seat. I realize I will sacrifice run time by doing this but, I was hoping that with the small amount of use that our cart gets that it wouldn't be a problem. I wanted to see if 125 amp hour batts would run the cart for around an hour. I don't even think it would be near that much continuous. I'll just look into to 8 volts or try to come up with the money for the 12 volts with at least 250 amp hours.

Ok golf cart experts, here is a question for ya. I want to buy a cart to completely redesign, as in replacing every bit of the body and seats with a custom body. I want to make a golf cart sleigh. I am pretty sure I would want an electric cart (since a sleigh shouldn't sound like a lawnmower!) but know little beyond that. I think a 3 wheel cart might look better, easier to hide the wheel, but I don't know what the drawbacks might be. I would like to replace the steering wheel with reigns (no, I'm not sure how yet, LOL), but other than that I would not likely be making many mechanical changes. I'm a heavy guy and will likely often have two other riders. What voltage should I look for? Are there brands I should clear of? I will be cruising Craigslist looking for a bargain cart to convert since I have shallow pockets. Any help would be much appreciated since I am a total novice! Thanks.

I started with a cheap cart and started replacing piece by piece. It was pink and no one wanted anything to do with it. Try ebay too. There is a guy in FL that sells them near Haines City. If you find one Shan, I will go and get it for ya. I need to get a back seat from him anyway!;)

I think some of the old 3 wheel harley carts had tiller steering which would be simpler to use reigns. I don't know alot about elec. carts but I would think you would want the 48 volt. As long as you are not hot roding I would think you could use a 3 wheel. These are all opinions no fact go at your own risk.:thumbsup2

Well shoot! I replied to you earlier Mike and it never showed up! I wanted to thank you for the link. My first reaction was that I was ticked... I thought I had a totally unique idea! Second reaction was I was glad to see that it was doable and this guy had some ideas I might like to incorporate (though fire-breathing reindeer is not one of them!!!). Finally, I thought, "I can do better than that!" I'm thinking of a real sleigh, not a plywood cutout. Probably a fiberglass over foam construction. I have some pretty wild ideas too, that will involve a fog machine, a bubble maker and peppermint smellitzer... but that's all you're getting out of me right now. But I do have another question: is it easy enough to strech a cart to a two-row vehicle, or do I need to start with a six seater?
lisa8200

keep in mind that I am no expert but, I have seen some of the bigger carts for not much more than a standard. While stretching may not be that difficult, I don't know that it would be worth the time and effort it would take to maintain structural integrity. The longer carts may be harder to find at a lower price but, they are out there.

Here is a quick 'sketch' of what I am hoping to do.
http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w359/SLSettles/Sleigh-Cart-1.jpg
The wheel base needed is really kind halfway between a two seater and a 4 seater (forward-facing, that is, which usually means 6-seater). I drew this using a 6 seater as a template and had to move the rear wheels forward to get the right look. Feedback is welcome.

Very cool. I thought I saw a charger sitting under the rear seat when we drove by the guys campsite thats why I thought it was elec. Never saw it running. If its gas then thats one cool cart. Both of my carts are gas. I just keep waiting to blow the motor so I can big block it. So do you go to FW?

We thought about that the last trip, but ended up staying in a condo that was offered at my kid's school annual fund raiser. School got the money - Business got the write off - Had 10 days in a 'small house' w/ 3 bed rooms, 2 bath rooms - you get the picture! I really don't want to drive that far with a trailer (well the trailer isn't that bad, maybe it's the amount of time in the truck with kids - LOL)

I gotta FLAT TIRE on my cart today!!! I barely take it out and I keep the tires shiney with Armor All, but it seems like it has dry rotted anyway. Now I need to decide if I should tell the wife in order to replace the tire I have to install a lift kit....she just might fall for that. Of coarse a lift kit would allow me to use my 17"rims that are just sitting in the garage collecting dust, and then Id need 2 tires!!! Heck..those wheels have been sitting for so long, I might need to replace all 4 tires. So...my delima....buy a new tire for around $50, or lie to get what I really want(but honestly cant afford)and cost myself $500....decisions, decisions, decisions.........Ive never been a very good liar.....I have a feeling I'm gonna be contacting Ron for a new tire.

Rog, good to see ya posting again and thanks for thinking of me. I think this cart might be a bit more trouble than it's worth by time I pick it up, drag it home, drop in a motor and buy batteries. Mike's right...no kids = more room for booze!!! :)
Plus, the stereo makes it really nice to listen to while looping the campground. If you have never carted at the Fort...you will find yourself more entertained by just cruising around the campground for hours on end than by the parks...thats my feelings anyway.
Since youve brought up stereos in carts....
I recently rigged a very nice sounding little get up in my cart for practically nothing. And it runs on its own 12v battery. My kid wore her powerwheels princess car out...burned the engine up...but the battery was still holding a charge, so I took the battery out and trashed the rest of the car. You can find "multimedia" speaker sets for about $10 at places like "BigLots" and other discount stores like that.
I took some multimedia speakers, removed the actual speaker cones from the boxes they come screwed into, one of the boxes holds all the electronic crap for plugging it into and volume and all that....the other one only had a speakercone in it...so I threw the empty one away. The one with the electronics in it, I put into the right side of my glove compartment on the golfcart and screwed it down so it wouldnt slide all over the place.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0037.jpg
I ran the speaker wires for the left speaker under and through the dashboard to the left glove box and the right speaker cone and wires remained on the right side.
I secured the 12v battery from the powerwheels car down next to the speakerbox with the electronics...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0035.jpg
Black & Decker makes a very inexpensive adapter to use household plugs in "cigarette lighter" type power sources, this cost about $20. This allows the household speaker system to be powered by the 12v battery. I used a cigaerette lighter extension cord, cut the part that actually goes into a cigarette lighter OFF and attached the cut end directly to the 12v battery.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0041.jpg
the speaker system is now powered and ready to pump tunes! I carefully drilled lots of tiny holes into the glovebox doors to simulate speaker grills...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0039.jpg
And glued the speaker cones to the inside of the glovebox doors...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0038.jpg
by drilling holes that the speakers go behind AND holesthat have NOTHING behind them you will get a somewhat richer sound. Alot of bassier sounds come from "behind" a speaker cone.
Now, it would be a real pain in the butt to have to pull the battery out of the glovebox everytime it needed recharging....so I yanked some more wires from the powerwheels car and rigged a plug so that I could recharge the battery without removing it from the golfcart...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0042.jpg
Now this complete system is hidden from view and secured down so that you wont hear tons of sliding every time you turn your golfcart wheel. Plus, if you dont find ways to secure this stuff...you risk things coming unplugged or disconnected in some kind of way.
The multimedia speakers usually have a plug that goes to your "headphones" output on your laptop computer...that plug is the same size as any MP3 player and many MP3 compatible cellphones (some cellphones may require a 2.5mm - 3.5mm adapter). At this point you can just plug in your mp3 player, throw it in the glovebox and go. Personally, I like to know what song is next on the playlist, so I ran the headphones plug up through the steering column opening and used one of those cellphone holders that suction-cups to a windshield and keep my player there.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/000_0040.jpg
I spent a total of maybe $40 on this, and its nice knowing that when my cart is parked somewhere without me, that no one is saying "Hey, I bet we can steal that stereo system before he gets back." because the whole thing is completely hidden and no one even knows its there. And if by chance they DO figure it out and steal it...Ive only lost 40 bucks!!

The whole purpose of the utlity bed is to haul the cooler and the rear speakers for the stereo. The stereo system is a 100 ( I think) watt clarion cd player/reciever that is hooked to an amplified antenna. It is roof mounted with a removable face plate, and Mp3 hook up. The speakers are two 6.5 's mounted in the roof unit with two 9" rear speakers mounted in boxes. I am not using a lot of techincally correct terms, DH knows all the stereo specs. The cart also features two electronic horn systems by Wolo, the Wolo Jukebox and Animal House horns, the light bar on top works, there are strobes on the front near the bottom of the brush guard, and there are blue led's underneath the cart too. So it is quite a little machine with it's gizmos. We are also in the process of having a friend make us a custom tonneau cover for the bed that has top access for the adult beverages cooler, but covers the speakers from the elements. The cart also features an autographed roof by a famous NASCAR (#17) driver who rode in it last winter at a local hockey game on NASCAR night.
We also got some news today about our ever expanding collection of carts and toys, my Dad is looking to buy a new 2009 Kawasaki Mule 4X4 Transport for the campground, so that he and mom can hit the trails with us this season.

It doesn't hurt to have an extra battery on a gas cart either. I have a deep cycle mounted in a battery box under the back seat for my 14 blue running lights and other things. When I park the cart someplace at night for a short while I leave them on. Makes the cart easy to find.

Okay guys, another question... I know that ideally for a 36v cart you want 6 6-volt gel cells, but can I get by, for testing at least, with 3 12-v? I could get start a lot cheaper, and I could uncouple the batts and use my existing charger. I know I won't get much run time, but enough?

After doing ALOT of surfing for information on this, it looks like ( at least for a 48v ) if you don't expect massive run time that 125 AH deep cycle batteries will work. I don't think you could run wide open forever but, I think for our use ( Fort only ) that this is what I am going to put in.I was wanting to go with 12v batts to free up some under the seat room.
Ideal,,,no,,,,,useable,,,it would appear so.
Just make sure you go with Deep Cycle not a regular car battery, there is a HUGE difference. Lower AH ( amp hour ) might make it not as good an Idea.
Wally world has these for around 80 each.

All I'm interested in is the lift, no hopping. Four inches would be perfect for my uses. Actually, I'm thinking a high, soft (almost springy) ride, to simulate floating, and then the hydros/pnuematics would draw down the suspension until the skids hit the ground. I like this idea because it could be done with just an air tank on board, no compressor, and when I run out of pressure I can just release the valve and the cart would rise and still be useable... whole lot better than being grounded somewhere! The best thing about a pipe dream (no opium involved) is that changes are easy, and there is plenty of time to revise your plans!

We always haul ours with the top on. Just remember, the cart must face forward, the windshield must be folded down, and any seat covers that aren't permanently attached must be removed.
Also, make sure the cart is securely anchored if you don't have a long bed truck where you can close the tailgate behind the cart or if you don't use a trailer. We have hauled our cart from Atlanta to FW at least a dozen times and never had a problem following these guidelines.

I think so Scott, but there's only 4 little bolts holding it on so it would take little time to take it off and throw it in the camper.
I hauled it 100 miles when I dropped it off at my Moms, I took the top off for that ride, you are right, for the few minutes it would take me its probably not worth the worry.

I've hauled mine with the roof on in the back of my pickup with my TT behind at least 10 times to the Fort from middle Tn with no problem, we just pull the windshield out and put it in the trailer.
Now the bad thing, we were returning one time on I10 and an egrit flew across the road and glided up over the windshield of the truck, all clear but not clear of the cart. The poor thing cought the front of the cart roof and stuck between the roof and full width mirror. We couldn't see him directly but the shaddow on the road showed him riding there for about 5 miles. Needless to say I was scrubbing for a couple hours, the mirror, the roof ,the seats along with the front of the TT, not a nice job.

Thought I would share a picture of my cart. The bed is removable with 4 pins to install the seat. Also 2 pins remove the rear step so it will fit into my enclosed trailer.

Oh yeah...I forgot about the "excuse all indecencies" wink smiley....I need to get one and carry it around in my stolen wallet....ya know.....incase Im busted being an ignorant butt in the company of good people!!!
I think theres a stroy behind that ... Hmmmmmm
LOL! Bud drove a couple hundred miles to buy our cart. Eventhough the windhield was down and he was driving slower, he lost it on the way home...luckily no one was behind him...and lucky it didnt scratch that paint job that I love so much! Anyways, we always take both the top and windshield off and put on the bed in the trailer. It's kind of PITA, but better than the alternative!

Kinda like how in the South you can say anything about someone as long as you say "bless his heart" afterwards ?

My Grandma used to say that all the time..."My gran-boy is 'bout as dumb as a box o'rocks, and just about as handsome...bless his heart!" It made me feel special..and blessed!

I'm bored today so was just browsing the web. Here's a link to one, busy (or ugly, IMO) golf cart. Toooo many checkerboard patterns for my taste.

For $4500 it is a good deal if you like the paint.

I think, with a little modifications, this would be a great rig for Shan-man. Just think of the possibilities for making this into a Shanta mobile, he could zip all over the campground next Christmas.
Hey Shan-man - you should go check this out; he's practically your neighbor.

$4,500 is WAY outta my price range, even if it didn't look like a Checker's restaurant! LOL My wife balked when I suggested paying $200 for a pair of fix-it project carts, so I think it'll be a while before I get a cart :( My wife's company just announced they are laying off about 13% of their employees, so we have other fish to fry! If she keeps her job, and I finish the master suite, maybe then I can get back to cart-dreamin'!

It took several years for it to be right for us to get a cart. Then 9 months later we bought another. So hang in there you never know what you might find.:thumbsup2

What is that shift in the middle of the floor board? Is that a brake, or an actual clutch and gear shift?

I noticed that to I was thinking forward and reverse. My dad has been wanting to build floor shifter for ours.

Ive seen carts with F/R shifts similar to this...but if THATS what he did, he didnt bother removing the original stock shifter....you can see its still here in this pic...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/dj_bigdaddyrog/3m93of3l11f612c1g391n50dee894b58e17.jpg
and with all the customizing this guy has done...(although hideous customizing)I dont think he would have left the original shifter in place after going through the trouble of installing a floor shifter. But maybe his "finishing touches" are as bad as his decorating tastes!!! :)

Looking at the above pic...it seems like its an electric cart...isnt that the charging recepticle next to the original F/R shift? So the floor shift cant be a clutch since its an electric motor...so, im thinking its either an extra brake(why would anyone need an extra brake???), or its strictly for show.
