I have a question...Do many private campgrounds exclude electric carts? We just tried to make reservations and this one campground and they won't permit our cart. They want us to rent theirs instead. Uh, no thanks. I'm not dropping an additional $200 a week to rent their crappy cart when I have a nice one sitting in my yard.

Is this the norm? And she was pretty snotty about it too! (or maybe I was snotty about it... :rotfl: )

I bought a 97 EZ Go today for $500 from a client. It's in pretty good shape. It needs new batts and I'll probably paint it soon. A buddy of mine works for a golf course and says wait til I buy the batts because he get's a deal. Hopefully have it lifted before LDGG. Not gonna go crazy but I figure for the price I got it for I can dump another 1,500 into it and have a decent cart. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

At the time I bought mine, I preferred the E-Z-Go body to the then current Club Car. But I really like the new Club Car bodies much better than the previous body. The thing about the Club Car is that there are more after market replacement bodies for it. I know you want to go Disney, but Club Car has everything available from '57 Chevy to '64 'stang to Jeeps to Hummers to F-250 and Dodge Ram bodies and the list goes on and on that you can buy to replace the existing one with if you want to change it out in lieu of painting the existing one or if it has body damage. They are pricey though and will still need to be painted once mounted. But the mounting is fairly straight forward.

It is going to be a lot of fun.

One of my carts that I have is a 91 Club Car that needed some TLC. The guy I bought it from I don't think ever cleaned her much less maintenance.

I really had a good time bringing her back to life and while it did cost some money, with ebay and Auto Parts store it can be done not quite as bad. (that is what I did)

John...Im pretty sure you have a series cart....that means you can make a couple of fairly inexpensive mods to your system and get a very decent speed out of it....dont give up just yet........but you're right about the reconsideration of adding an unnesseccary 250lbs to it. But I bet after you paint it you'll be too attached to it to abandon it to some stranger on ebay!!!

RvUsa
07-20-2008, 10:40 AM
Don't get me wrong guys, it's not the speed thing that makes us think about changing.... LOL We have a very l o n g driveway with a pretty good hill, and the main use of this cart will be to carry the little booger back and forth to the bus (cheaper than firing up the diesel). Anyhoo, with me and him in the cart it BARELY makes it up the hill, I mean barely.... with the 3 of us in it, it is stick you foot out the side and help push... LOL

My point is, I want to do something spectacular (see hint about animal kingdom) but will require serious modification/fabrication to complete, and I am not sure I want to invest the time and money to do that to this cart. So we may just "trade Up" thats all.... LOL

I can happily say I've never owned a minivan. What's so weird is it's not for most reasons people say. Most folks get a minivan to haul kids around, but kids have dirty stuff. So you'd still have to put the dirty stuff "inside" a minivan. With a crew cab truck, I could still haul 4 kids AND put the dirty "stuff" in the back of the truck, and my floors are vinyl, so I could scrub those out. No carpet for me!!! It just worked out that it's the perfect tow vehicle for my T@B!!

Well, I had to replace some of the battery cables today, went to move it, and one was so corroded it broke off, so I bought some 2 gauge monster cable and some solder on ends and made me some... I was hoping it would give it a little more pep, nope, still slow!!

I am going to go look at some of the cart boards and see if the solenoids are all supposed to be the same temp after you run it a while, I have one that is about 30 degrees hotter than the other 4.... ( I have an infrared thermometer)

Those are cool! Our A/C maintenance guy has one of them & he "proved" to me that it was -45 degrees in Florida in June! Yes he did!! He aimed it toward the sky & the temp sank like a rock! Darndest thing I ever saw!!

Ok, but one more thing about mini-vans first! :rotfl:

I'll admit, the day I got my mini van I cried. Boo-hoo'd! Youth, beauty, sensuality, spontenaity-----GONE! I cried as if I had lost a dear friend and promised to blame my husband for all eternity.

Now, 8 years later, I own the very same mini van...Mrs Higginbottom btw, she is paid for, reliable, filthy dirty, dented, scratched and adorned with honor roll and fort stickers. I AM a soccer mom. I do, by nature, know how to multi-task, but choose not to while driving (unless I have to break up a fist fight in the back seat). She is not pretty. But has a video player and room for friends. Therefore....mini van = familial bliss.

Oh I wish we could downsize to a minivan. I drive a full size E-150 hi-top conversion. Beautiful the day we bought it and went right from the dealer to the hospital to bring the first of our quadruplets home from the hospital. 7 years later and long ago paid for, its mine, dirty, and getting smaller, no room for extra friends, here. I am hoping to add an 8 passenger mini for our everyday use, they'll be tight, but technically we would have room for 1 more, maybe 2 if I use the trunk ;) . Cheaper on the gas too.

Are any of you guys using your golf carts to get around town?

Not sure if we will or not. We would have to put in brake lights and turn signals and put in seat belts. Then get it tagged, (already insured) and get a town sticker. I already save a lot with my scooter and my husband really needs to have his truck for work.

We use our cart in the neighborhood. It's great to get back and forth to the pool and tennis courts. We also take it to the convenience store/gas station that is down the road. However, we have huge hills and traffic on the main roads...so no way we could take it around town.

I have a 2003 E-Z-Go Textron (IIRC) that is stock in the running gear dept. Can I add 2-6 volt batteries and get more power on hills and more speed? It really slows on the bridge between the meadows and the dog park and everybody passes us like we were sitting still even on level grade with a full charge. I probably need new batteries, but if it would make a difference I would just go ahead and buy two more. I really can't justify (or afford) a new motor and controller and new batteries considering the only time we use it is when we go to Ft. Wilderness. But if/when I do buy a new motor and controller I will spring for the fastest thing I can find to make it worth it.:flower3:

First thing is.. If your batts are old never try to change just a couple change them all it will kill the new ones fast. As for speed and torque you need a good HP motor with a bigger amp controller you will be able to climb anything at the fort even the huge hill when entering the campground to the right by the maint dept.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I was thinking in terms of buying 8-6 volt batteries instead of buying 6.

I guess I'm just going to have to save up until after we move which will probably be next spring with the housing market what it is.

Any suggestions on what type motor and controller I should get for an E-Z-Go? I visited a booth at an RV show this spring and the rep looked in her catalog and found a motor that didn't require a new controller. I forgot the horsepower, but it was up there with the ones that did.

To go from 36 volt to 48 volt will cost you will have to do more then just add two more batts.

It says it "vehicle speed 22mph" and right above that it says"normally 12-14 mph"....AND will give a 20% increase in torque. The torque I can believe, but do you trust these guys as far as what they are claiming for speed?

1) Pull off your brake drums and check out the pad condition as well as the brake drum
2) Make sure you tighten the nut on your brake drum super tight and replace to codder pin.
3) check all rear tire lug nuts and tighten

These are the most common things that will cause rear noise. I just hope its not a rear bearing, but try these items first.

Donnie, its automotive paint, Omni single stage urethane. I sprayed it with an hvlp gun, hence the overspray! LOL I had a lot of body work to do on the thing, it was pretty bad before. I primed it with a flex primer so the paint won't crack if it is leaned on (flexible nose). I will color sand and buff the red when it dries, in about 12 hrs.

Here is what it looked like when I started:

color sanding gets all the orange peel out of the clear you wet sand then buff out till is shines with a high speed buffer and some swirl remover. I'm doing a UM cart next week I will get some pics of the painting etc process.

I have a golf cart story. A few weeks ago, at MILs house, my nephew was driving my DD9 on a golf cart, took a turn too fast and threw her off. MIL said "NO more driving the GC!"to him. A week later......he's back on the GC (Dad said it was ok) and he crashes it into the side of MILs truck, tearing up the whole front end of the GC!

Maybe this is why Disney doesn't kids driving them?

I am a yamaha gas guy so I don't know about ez-go. But just about any gas cart that runs and dose not smoke is worth a grand.
Oh yeah gas carts rule  . I would figure out how much $$$ you will need to put into it to make it what you want and see if it is worth it to you. If you can do a compression test on the motor to make sure its not worn out.(I did not do this until after I bought our carts but they where ok). I say buy it and have fun:thumbsup2

Man....it doesnt matter how much you spend or save....once you get your hands on one....your gonna spend all your extra cash kickin it up a notch here and there.....I paid 2g for my cart, and have put almost that amount into it....it was perfect when I purcheased it....didnt NEED anything, but I could tell it wanted a pimp-over. Waiting for a new controller to come in right now, I blew the original trying to install a bigger motor that wasnt compatible. According to the manufacturer of the new controller...it will give me the extra speed that I was trying to get with the motor anyway....so, in my head, that cancels out the cost of the new controller.....my wife doesnt see it quite the same way!!!

big kahuna1
08-14-2008, 07:24 AM
I could be worng here but I do not think the controller has anything to do with increasing speed. I think bigger contollers are needed to handle increasing speed but that speed has to come form the motor and/or gearing. Again, I could be wrong though. Maybe tungpo will chime in here and advise us.

BigDaddyRog
08-14-2008, 09:11 AM
I know its sounds too good to be true...but the dude on the phone said that the controllers originally put in my club car purposely limits the speed allowed to the motor...the 400amp one their sending me is wide open with no set limit on it. Oh...and it will give me 20% more torque, as well.
We'll see how it performs...he said they offer a 100% money back garantee if unsatisfied for any reason. So if it doesnt do something sweet, it goes right back to them and I buy a refurbished one on ebay for half the price Im paying for this one.

big kahuna1
08-14-2008, 09:22 AM
Let's hope so but I still have my doubts but then again, I am not a golf cart expert.

I just know that when I went with a bigger motor I had to go with a bigger controller. In addition, I believe gearing is what controls torque but, like I said, I am not an expert and can be competely full of you know what or may be just half right or somewhere in between. I hope it does work though.:thumbsup2

upgrading your controller might give you a few MPH but its purpose is to increase your torque

Minnie's Mate
08-14-2008, 10:59 PM
I seem to have good torque, but just not enough top end speed. I'm afraid a new motor and corresponding controller combination is going to be my only answer. That's more than I am ready to invest right now since the only time I use the golf cart is when we go to the Fort.

The prices that I find seems like $500-700 for a new motor and about the same for a controller. Add to that new batteries (mine are the originals that came with it in 2003) and I'm looking at $1,400-$2,000. Maybe I'm way off. This is something I'm way out of my league on.
