I'm also a Bluecoats fan. They are one of the few corps I've enjoyed in the past few years. (I'm an old-timer; marched 27th Lancers 1976-1978 and the 1994 Alumni corps) I also taught 27th in 1982 (marching) and Avant Garde 1980-1981. Shocked to see a drum corps thread on a Disney forum!!

LOL hopefully I'll be able to see more shows this year than last. I will be busy on Saturdays, but any other day of the week is pretty much flexible.

Go Blue Stars!

So, what does everybody think about the new rule allowing electronic instruments? I, for one, am against it but am willing to give it a chance before I stop spending money going to shows and buying souvies.

Please go slowly when you explain...

I watched the You Tube clips and I don't understand. Where is this band (is it a school?) and why are so many of the alumni "Family"? Why is it called drum corps when it is a whole marching band?

Yes, I am straight. Yes, I am blond. But I WANT to understand, really, I do!

I need to know this because DS12 just started playing drums in the band this year. He also likes to listen to the soundtrack to "Cats". You see where I am going here, don't you?

hehe that is a VERY loaded set of questions. There is a simple definition I always live by. For those who have never experienced drum corps, there is no explanation. For those who have experienced it, no explanation is necessary.

My point is that drum corps is very difficult to explain, but I'll give it a shot.

A drum corps is a group of kids ranging 14-21 who travel on a monthly basis from November through May to camps in a given city. For instance, the La Crosse Blue Stars are based out of La Crosse, WI but hold camps in Indianapolis. Members travel from all over the world to get to the camps each month.

I have to go, so I'm going to make this brief. Drum corps are not affiliated with any schools(except one). They are non profit organizations. From early June through early August, members get up everyday, rehearse at a school, shower, do a show, and travel by bus all night long. Typically they roll into the new housing site in a new city at 3 or 4am, sleep on gym floors, get up at 7 or 8 and start rehearsal. They do this for over 60 days straight.

If you want more information, check out www.dci.org
I'll explain more later. Questions are good!

Thank you! :) I am looking forward to learning more about it. Then if it ever comes up in conversation with DS I will understand what is involved. He brought home the paper where he has to choose electives for next year and he wasn't even sure he wanted to continue with band, but still, I like to try to stay one step ahead of him. ;)

I see there will be an event here in July. I wonder if I should try to get tickets? Or maybe wait and see which direction his interests (all of them) go. Plenty of time to work it out, I suppose.

There are no clarinets, flutes, trombones, saxophones-did I miss anything? The marching is usually much more complex than a band. It's long days of hard work. The satisfaction of being on the field as you look up at a cheering crowd makes it all worth while. If he marches in a drum corp he will never regret it and will never forget it.

This kind of sums up what drum corps is....

http://youtube.com/watch?v=epVmGr7_WEc

If your son does decide to march I can tell you one thing, you will give a boy to the drum corps, the drum corps will give you a man back.

And it looks like Drum Corps is comming to a theater near you soon!

The movie theater is great, but they usually assume for some reason that we don't like blaring loud horn lines cuz the volume is NEVER loud enough, not even equal to movies!!!

The theater is a good way to introduce I guess, but there is NOTHING like a live performance. I've NEVER seen a drum corps rookie walk away from their first show and say wow that was boring, I wish I wouldn't have come, or what a waste of money. Encourage DS to sign up for band and take him to a competition over the summer.

As far as the family concept, almost every corps out there considers themselves a family. When you are with 135 other people 24/7 for over 2 months, there is a degree of comradery(sp?) that develops that can't be matched. Many corps have a long history and it's the tradition that brings alumni and current members together. Drum corps evolves every year(sometimes in ways we wish it wouldn't) but if the values of the corps remain true, that is how the family is formed. It's also just the fact that marching is such a unique experience and you can only truly understand it if you've been through it.

I meant Family in the GLBT sense. ;) I was curious why the thread is particular to this forum.
I can certainly understand a sense of family and belonging from participating in this sort of group/team/corps, but I was wondering if there is a specific draw for gay youth.
I am perfectly fine with whatever DS's orientation is. All of my friends told me they knew by the time they were 9, so I am assuming HE already knows. He hasn't really said anything to me for me to know one way or the other, he just seems to have interests that lean a bit, if that makes sense. Obviously I want him to be comfortable and happy with himself, if that is even possible for ANYONE in middle school.
Like I said, I try to stay one step ahead of him, so I might be reading more into it than there is. It has been said that I will be the mom who shakes her head and asks "Where did I go wrong?" if my DS is straight!:rotfl:

I put the thread over here for a few reasons.

Yes, drum corps has a gay draw. It's art! You travel the country!

But the main reason is in the past I have started a drum corps thread on the community board, and it just sat there. The thread I started over here was a lot of fun last summer, and most people didn't mind coming over here to discuss drum corps.

That's all....

haha oooohhh. The drum corps community is extremely accepting of gay people. Some of the best designers, performers, and leaders are gay and no one cares.

If you are unsure about his orientation, drum corps will probably bring it out. I got done with my first year of college and decided I was tired of hiding. I came out to drum corps people first because I knew I would be accepted. It was also the perfect environment because drum corps people don't typically mix with family and friends to the point where something like that would come out. What happens in corps stays in corps :-)

2 weeks after getting back from corps I went to WDW and did my college program. That's where I had my first kiss, my first bf, etc etc. I also came out to my parents on the college program.

Between drum corps, college, and Disney in 2004, I was home for a total of 6 weeks the whole year LOL. Without drum corps and Disney, I would be a very different person.

Drum corps will truly change a person and 99.9% of the time it's for the better. Having a bus get a flat tire in the middle of the night and then have 50 people squeeze onto two already packed full busses while tossing luggage in the food truck is an experience like none other. Talk about building character:rotfl2:

And you want me to hand my baby over to experience things like THAT?!:scared1: He has never eaten tuna from a can! The last tuna he had was in sushi at Citrico's!:rotfl2: And he's not terribly fond of Kool Aid, either.

I would love for him to be in the college program at WDW. He likes art and music, but he can't sing and I suspect that he can't dance, either!;) I'm not sure what sort of career he is hoping for - I don't think he really knows yet. I wouldn't mind if he wanted to join a drum corps, but probably not until he is a little bit older.:)

There are 3 different divisions of corps. Division II/III corps are smaller and usually have more spots open than a Division I corps. If you're worried about age, he might be best off starting in a lower division corps and if he wants to, working into a Div I corps. There are many kids who are 14 in the lower division corps and it really is a good place for them to hone their skills. The other thing about being older is that kids start wanting a job, a car, a cell phone, and bills start coming. Pretty soon drum corps gets pushed to the side. Starting young makes sure they have the opportunity to march at least once. Most of the time they get so hooked they work all year long to pay for the summer. The other thing is that the age out is 21. If you turn 22 after June 1, you can march at 22, but otherwise, you're done after 21, never to march junior corps again. Sooner is better. I didn't join until I was 19 and those extra years went way too fast and I didn't get the chance to march again.

He just turned 12 last month. He already has a cell phone, and when he is old enough to drive we will give him DH's car and buy a new one for DH. (Unless something happens to DH's car before then.):scared1:
He is our only child on purpose - DH and I were both spoiled growing up and we are going down that same path with DS. (As evidenced by 8 trips to WDW in 3.5 years.) If he is interested in corps then we will pay for him to participate so he can focus on academics during the school year.:)

It looks like the corps in Denton (which isn't too far) might be one for him to investigate, especially if he has intentions of going to college at UNT. He seems to be doing well with his drumming. The director has DS and 3 others from Beginning band staying after twice a week to learn the Intermediate music so they can play some upcoming concerts. If he really is good at drumming and enjoys it then I want to encourage him! :thumbsup2

Hmm. It seems that the local one is actually an "all-age" corps, which is a bit different. I don't think there is a Jr. corps close to us. I don't count San Antonio as "close". But I will keep researching and see what I come up with!

Not that senior corps is ANY true comparison, as far as dedication and skill.... but I did senior corps for a few summers out of high school. I didn't have the drive for DCI, but still loved color guard and missed it from high school so much. I had a friend in the Cadets and in the Crossmen and would follow them around one summer. Senior corps (no age limit, 2-3 days a week of practice, shows only on the weekends) gave me the outlet to enjoy field show competitions for myself, again. I also had some GREAT times with some really awesome people!

I confess, I still have my rifle in my basement and impress my DD8 and DS6 from time to time...

Kids travel all over the country to march. I commuted from Ohio to New Jersey.

You will also be surprised that numerous corps have Winter camps in Texas. I know the Bluecoats do, not sure of the others. And I agree, if your son is only 12, a Div II or III corps would be a good start. Most kids in Div I corps are between the ages of 17 and 21.

I am too much of a helicopter mom to allow him to go out of state by himself.;) I might be able to handle an in-state camp.

I was reading on the DCI website last night as well as the sites for some individual corps. I pulled up the audition pieces for one corps and asked DS if he could read the music, and he said he could. I played cello when I was younger so I can't read drum music.:rotfl2: This is definitely something to consider if he stays interested in drums/band.

Thanks for all of your help! :)

Love love love Drum Corps. I never had the chance to march myself, but I had several friends that did. I have insane amounts of respect for anyone who has marched. I was a band nerd throughout high school, and that was where I was able to experience my first DCI show. I played the trombone, and I really thought about joining a corps, but valves confused me. :confused3 The coolest thing for me however, was that the show my senior year was the *watered down of course* very same as the Cadets from 2000. So, not only is the show amazing period, but I've lived and breathed the music personally so whenever I see Illuminations that just makes it mean that much more for me.

On the first link fast forward to 3:00. Thats where the vietnam 1960's part starts. Amazing show for it's time! Great drill, and the show had a message! GASP!

The second half is a hoot too, rock and roll mixed with old school drum corps!

That 94 Alumni corp was a sight to see-wish they'd do it again. Would like to see a North Star Alumni corp too.

Just flipping through, and Drum Corps caught my eye...so funny you mention North Star. I finished my junior corps career there in 78. It was truly a dream come true for me. No we didn't ever win the nationals, but being in the top 12 at a time there were 70+ corps trying to get in was good enough for this drum corps lifer. I think if you can get to Lawrence this summer for both the re-introduction of Mission Drums to be held in Lawrence on July 26, and then the Crusaders show on that following Thursday you will get a pleasant surprise from the Crusaders Senior Corps...Rumor has it they will be playing Ole, and Masquerade as a tribute from one great "Boston" area corps to another.

Now that is class!

I'll start off by saying I was never in drum corp., can't read music and would probably trip over myself while trying to march. That being said, my favorite, all-time drum corp. is the Bayonne Bridgemen from Bayonne, NJ, who re-formed I guess with the older members. I don't think they really compete too much anymore, although I could be wrong, but I think the love the corp. is something that has never left their blood. Possibly no one has heard of them because it's been a long time since their hayday, but I just thought I'd throw in my $.02.

I can assure you there are some of us on here who are old enough to remember the Bridgemen! :thumbsup2

Back when I marched, 5 of the top 12 came from New England. 27, Bridgemen, Garfield, Crossmen, and North Star!

Oh, they are very much alive and well. Although the "Bridgemen Shuffle" isn't quite as spunky as it was, they are still awesome. I have a few friends playing there right now. My fondest memory of my competing days were in Malden, Ma, 1978. It was my very last competition and the Bridgemen made the trip. This show was called the "Battle Of Champions" and was after the nationals. Anyhow, I always respected them and thought they were "the balls" (drum corps talk for really good :-) ).:worship: In the 78 finals they finished 5th. Anyhow, short version, we (North Star) beat them by 2 points in that show, but that was not the best part. After the scores, when they marched by us on the field, they stopped turned away from the bleachers, and toward us, and played their butts off. I just could not believe what I was seeing. Talk about class, and what better way to finish my junior days than to beat one of THE very best, and having them honor us with a concert for us! Gives me chills thinking about it again...:woohoo:

congrats man, I'll be rootin for ya

Being a drummer is EXTREMELY competitive! You have to start young, practice hard, and get involved in a Div III corps. He'll have a lot of success that way.

All age corps are good too. Others are right though, there are a lot of corps with camps in Texas. If you're afraid to let him travel, travel with him :-) corps ALWAYS need volunteers and you get to see the progress of the members over the course of the weekend.

I plan on eventually marching a senior corps. I need to pay off some bills and get a little more financially secure, which given I'm in school won't happen anytime soon. Hopefully Mona Vie will help, but that's another topic!

EDIT: ok my response is exactly one page behind LOL. Go to the end of page 2 and thats what I was talkin about

I thought about going with him. ;) We'll see how the vacation days shake out when he is old enough to go to camp. If we keep going on 16 nighters to WDW I'll have to let him go by himself because I will have to stay here and WORK! :rotfl:

Glad to hear you had the opportunity to personally experience them. I was always so impressed with them as a kid and was very disappointed when they disbanded. A few years ago (2?) they did a show here in Bayonne at Veterans Stadium where they hosted a whole slew of bands. I think it was the first time they'd played together in years, and it brought back so many memories. Now I've got my daughter interested in them and the funny thing is, one of her classmate's dads plays with them. It's nice to see something so wonderful brought back to new generation and it's also nice to have our town known for something! I have to say that I'm entirely impressed with anyone who lives this lifestyle because I couldn't. The hours of practice, travel, being away from home, the money involved... it really takes dedication, loyalty and a love of the music.

I never thought I would see this again, and was so surprised to stumble on it on Youtube!

It's the Cadets closing the Olympics in Atlanta.

I saw the run through for this, I think in Madison WI, and I remember the drum corps community was a little upset at the fact that they kept being called a band, but hey, this is the Olympics! What a great opportunity!

Alas, the days when the Eastern US ruled drum corps are gone. To think that Garfield, 27th, Muchachos, Bridgemen, and North Star were all finalists over a span of about 5 years is incredible. Add in Squires, Alliance, Avant Garde, BAC and many other top 20 finishers, and it's obvious the East had some pretty darn good drum corps.

I will be there-went last year too. Really enjoyed the Carolina Crown show.

I marched senior corps as well - a few years with in the colorguard at Westshoreman, Harrisburg, PA. Practice and shows were weekends only and they were the best summers of my life. I regret not being able to march Jr Corps, but it was the next best thing. :flower3:

Hmmm... lets see

My dad marched OLPH Ridgemen in the early 60's, then NY Skyliners in the mid 60's. He played soprano bugle.

Mom marched in the Queensmen Marionettes...also mid 60's. She carried a flag (they used holsters back then...didn't do anything w/ them since they were so darn heavy!)

Knowing the reprobates dad marched with, mom swore her kids would NEVER march in a drum corps. She was wrong! ;)

My sister (soprano) started it and marched in the Long Island Kingsmen Squires in 1981 (our younger brother - cymbals- marched too).

Then both sis (french horn) and I (bass drum) marched in the St. Ignatius Girls (Hicksville, LI) in 1982.

In 1983 and 1984 we both marched with the Long Island Kingsmen (sis played mellophone and I played bass drum and carried a set of tenors...I wouldn't really call it "playing"... respectively).

Sis and I then marched (along w/ about 25 other ex LIK members due to LIK folding) with the Bayonne Bridgemen in 1985. Sis again played mellophone and I played cymbals. For those that were around back then...this was the "Christmas" year.

In 1986, my parents made me stay home for one summer and "find other things to do other than drum corps." Sis went and joined the Garfield Cadets (pre name change), again playing mellophone. She ended up marching w/ them until she aged out in 1990.

In 1987 I joined Crossmen and played cymbals. That summer I met (and dated briefly) my now husband.

I marched w/ the Crossmen until I aged out in 1989. I also volunteered with them HEAVILY through 1994.

My brother marched (baritone 88 & 89, cymbals 90, 91 and bass drum 93, 94.. I think those are the right years??...I'm probably off w/ something there) in Crossmen for multple years as well.

My dh marched in Crossmen's tenor line in 1987 and then marched multiple years with the Westshoremen senior corps in the early '90s.

Most recently, he played at Serenade in Brass in Harrisburg w/ the Westshoremen Alumni Corps.

Whoosh... that was a lot of drum corps history! In total my siblings and I collectively marched over 25yrs. In 1989 my parents had three of us on the field at finals, in two different corps! :thumbsup2

That all said, dh and I have been out of the drum corps loop for the most part due to us having two little ones. Dd is now turning 7yo this summer and ds is 2.5yo...so attendance at drum corps shows has not been a high priority! We've gone to Allentown a few different times over the years, including one night last summer and may be going this year as well. Some years when dd was younger we would take the ride up to Allentown, hang out in the park all day and come home w/o even going into the stadium!

With the staff they have in place, the way they have been building each year, the returners they have and the show for this summer, I do not see to 6 out of the question for the Blue Stars. Unless there is some drastic issue, top 10 is totally within their reach, so hopefully they have that something special that will push then up to the top 6.

I made the decision to sell my marching baritone on Craigs List, and all I've gotten so far were 4 people asking for me to come join their senior corps. One guy wanted me to join their pit section. LOL that is a bag of worms right there :rotfl:

I don't believe they are going back to the traditional uniform. I think some of the uniform is cool, but it also makes it painfully obvious when a clump of white legs and shoes is traveling across the field and someone is even the slightest bit behind. It's so funny, everyone always said "the Blue Stars need to update their uniform" and now that they did, everyone complains!

Don't get me wrong, I was against it and still am for the most part. I keep an open mind to the progression of the corps, but I think if they were going to redo the uniform, they should have kept either the cross straps or the buckle in some way.

This is going to be an awesome trip for me! As much as I loooove DH and my 3 monsters, er I mean children, this will be the first time I've EVER been away from them for more than a day or 2...I've been without my husband, but I've always had the kids. And, I've been without the kids, but I've always had my husband. No laundry, no dishes, no kids. Aside from homeschooling my own 3 kiddos (8, 11, and 14) I teach gymnastics and tae kwon do. Greetings All,
Just found this thread. Although I am not a marching member I have been a huge DCI fan for the past 20 years or so. I am lucky that I live about 5 miles from the Santa Clara Vanguard organization and about 50 miles from the Concord Blue Devils. Having 2 amazing organizations in your home town area is a real privilege. The Vanguard is definitely going thorough some changes with the addition of Jeff Fiedler as the new CEO it should be an exciting season.

Last year I was able to travel to Pasadena for the World Championships. Having the event on the West Coast was something I was not about to miss. It was an exciting week in Southern California. Living in CA not many Corps travel out this far west due to the distance so this was a once in a life time experience.

For those of you looking to start your kid in Drum Corps there is a Blue Devils “C” Corps that starts at age 8. They perform locally and are a blast to watch. Here is a link to more about them. http://www.bluedevils.org/programs/c/2008/ (http://www.bluedevils.org/programs/c/2008/)

Looking forward to keep up with you all on this thread

I was touring Epcot w/ a bunch of friends during the 1997 (?...could be off a year or so there) DCI Worlds and came across a line marked off w/ yellow plastic chains.

I turned to my friends and said... LOOK... Phantom was here!

Dead Silence...and blank looks. Picture birds chirping.

Yup... I started marching in my early teens and that was a pretty standard joke among my fellow corps members in those first couple of years. By the time I was touring Epcot w/ my friends it was 15yrs later and none of them had ever seen PR play Spartacus.

When I explained the significance...none of them thought it was funny at all. Later on that day I came across another old fogey and shared the story... he thought it was hysterical :lmao: ... and we both felt bad for the young uns that didn't get the joke!

Now it looks like there may be a problem in Bloomington! The stadium turf is suffering what seems to be a sink hole! YIKES! Now what?

The field at Bloomington needs to be ready for August 30 according to a press release from the school. Not sure what they're going to do.

I marched in the I.C. Reveries from 1967 - 1974, and 27th Lancers 1976 - 1978 and the Lancer Alumni Corps in 1994. I played mellophone with both corps. I taught Avant Garde in 1980-81, and 27th in 1982. I was a marching tech with both corps.
Back "in the day" (when I marched), nearly every town in Massachusetts seemed to have a corps or two (many had feeder corps made up of younger kids). There was always a week-end show within easy driving distance every week from late May until early September. The World Open and CYO Nationals brought in most of the big name corps.
I went to DCI Finals in Foxboro a couple of years ago. I appreciated the hard work of the marching (dancing?) members, but felt somewhat detached from the direction corps have gone. Most of the music was foreign to me, and the voice amplification was annoying at best.
My favorite show since 2001 was Cavaliers "Machine". Great example of a concept show that told the story without narration. :worship:

News from Madison! Drum corps is great!

After the massive rains stopped late yesterday afternoon the corps did have their concert for the people of Baraboo. After hearing the news that people there were trying to get ready for more flooding the guys pitched in . They helped sandbag till they ran out of sand and/or bags about 1:00 am.

"They are the MEN OF MADISON !" You make me PROUD guy's !

Who is going to the Citrus Bowl July 12. Haven't gotten tickets yet, but I usually end up in "the lot" most of the time anyways.
I see Cadets are staying in Kissimmee.. wonder if they are planning a pop in at a park for a little concert or parade?

Boy did I sure pick a rotten time to leave So Cal :-(

So far, it looks like everybody is being "slotted" into about the same place they finished last year. Word so far is that Boston and Bluecoats have very exciting shows, with Boston being the crowd favorite. Cadets have a very demanding show and a superb hornline. They are using a raised, round stage, and there were some crashes into it. Love Bluecoats boxing theme.
I hope the live theater feed for qtrs. happens. That will be my only chance to see the corps this year until the dvd's come out.

If you consider "stalking" cooking 4 meals a day for 165 people in a semi truck converted into a kitchen, sleeping on high school gym floors, or in a moving bus, taking cold showers at 3 am, and traveling to a different city every day, no I have not stalked the Cadets. But I have for 3 other "bands".

But come to think of it, they always did park the kitchen a good 300 yards away from where the kids praticed.....

I've also done the cook truck volunteer thing. More like 200 ravenous people!
Get up at 3 a.m. and make sausage and eggs with cereal, milk, juice and toast. Repeat for three other meals in the same day. With no money for yourself or the food. Tough going but totally worth it.
You folks (whom I love and respect) make fun of us "band" guys, but you have no idea of the work, love, dedication, and sense of family that drum corps have. They are a special people. I understand if you 'just don't get it'.
No problem. But don't put us down because we're different. (Sound familiar??)

Hello all, this is my first post. I wanted to add my two cents to the kitchen discussion and comfort of being on the road with a corps.

I'm a 1985 Blue Devils Alumni. That was the year that we were at a rest stop in Janesville, WI and our Food Truck was on fire. The beautiful, new, state of the art with huge refrig unit, sleeping bunks and bathroom - that was loaded with flags and drums and I think some horns due to our older equip truck breaking down in Minneapolis, MN. The next day was the one where we marched in full uniform in a monsoon in St. Charles, IL with the Velvet Knights drums. :)

23 years and we still remember :) Hence, why the food trucks are parked a bit away - trash, food prep and you never know what they're going to do!

Thanks for posting the scores!

Why do they always schedule laundry days in small towns?

Funny story, I was in some laundrymat washing all of the kitchen rags, called my Mom to pass the time. Mom says "Where are you?" I ask some lady.....lady says the name of the town....I ask "No what state am I in?"

Another funny story....

We were pulling into some small town in Indiana, Paoli I think, around 4am.

We had about 20 Japanese kids on tour with us. As the kids started waking up as the busses pulled into town, the Japanese kids got all excited! It was the first time they ever saw a small Midwestern town! All they could say in their limited English was "Ahhh look, Mayberry!" :rotfl:

And I'll take the crazy badge, as a badge of honor! Thanks!:thumbsup2

I used to be a prop guy for my high school "marching band" not drum corps, LOL. I was in the indoor percussion for a while but had to quit due to scheduling conflicts with the indoor guard I was in as well, but had to quit that as well due to transportation issues. It was one thing after another with that! LOL. I love to watch them perform though, my favorite is seeing the ACC tournie even though it's high schools, it's still cool to watch the formations. Where is there a place to watch the Drum Corps?!

Maybe in your local movie theater! DCI (Drum Corps International) has shown the top 18 corps through a satellite feed to movie theaters in the past. Check with www.DCI.org for more information. It's quite a step up from most high school bands.

I performed at the D2 show it Brocton Ma yesterday with Mass Brass, and Tell ya what...I got to see the Jersey Surf, and yes I know they are not in the "world class" but man I was impressed. Awesome sound! Excellent guard, and a great drumline! I was sitting kind of low, but I got the picture of overall visuals, and they would be awesome to watch in the upper levels of a big stadium. Over all a great show. Watch for them to impress you...Don't let that D2 label deter you from watching them. I also thought the Citations from Burlington Ma was excellent too. Not the numbers of Jersey, but equally impressive sound from a more compact unit. 7th Regiment from New London, Ct. was very good too...all in all I was impressed with the over all quality of these "younger" siblings to the D1 corps... I implore you all to not overlook watching these "up-and-comers". You will not be disappointed!

Now for us, it's on to the Bristol RI show this coming Thursday and to see the Cadets...and the Surf in the same show....

BTW, I will post us "old folk" playing at the show on YouTube soon...and will give you all a link...

Having grown up there, I used to march it twice during my high school years...once with the high school band, quick change and run back to the begining and once with the corps. My dad marched it for 61 years! This is the first year he will not be able to do it..:sad1:

Of course it wasn't always as long as it is now...prior to 76 it was only 2 miles
now it's 3.1 miles, yep, very long indeed....

Lucky for me, we are ONLY doing the DCI show the night before...we are old now, and don't do parades...:rotfl: Besides, the whole minicorps thing uses a set drummer...no drumline...:confused3 (don't mean to offend all you drummers out there....remember, I marched with North Star during the famed "Chrome Wall" era - :thumbsup2 )

This is how I will be spending my Saturday night:

San Francisco Renegades - San Francisco, CA

party:

:thumbsup2 yep on all those mentioned, but :worship: :worship: 7 :worship: :worship: (Renegades for the uninformed)If I lived anywhere near SF, that is where you would find me! :cool1:

Being a Mellophone, and them now aquiring the services of Bonnie Ott along with Chris Nalls and the rest of that sweet mell section, it would make my day to play along side!

Not that it's a bad thing playing with the MB mell section that has been together for 3 years now, but that would be a trip! (figuratively and literally considering I am on the opposite coast - :) )

The 2008 Cadets send their family members, alumni, fans and supporters best wishes for a happy week! The corps spent the weekend in Madison, Wis., and Naperville, Ill., before heading to Erie, Pa., for rehearsal today and another performance of "...and the pursuit of happiness" tonight. Excitement is building as the Cadets prepare to come home this weekend for their show, Music In Motion, on Saturday, July 5th at Clifton Stadium in Clifton, N.J.

I wanna go on tour now.....

OK, its on there schedule that they are doing a parade @ Disney on Sunday the 13th. Which park?

I've done a bit more research to locate other corps housing so I can "stalk" :cheer2: and get a little fix, but sure would love to see Cadets at the park.

This is going to be my first summer not seeing the California Corps live in... well since the early '70's :headache:

Looking forward to the 12th :dance3:

The thought of a 150 member drum corps blowing the roof off mainstreet with drums and horns gives me chills. Gosh, the narration of "Disney's magic music days proudly presents.." will fit so well with the cadets :rotfl:

Fans can join three top drum corps for a change of venue and a whole lot of fun on Sunday, July 13, when the Cadets, Glassmen and Teal Sound take to the streets of Disney World's Magic Kingdom for a very special day of performances! Drum corps fans will find an abundance of spectacle and excitement as these corps march through the "Happiest Place on Earth," the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.
The Magic Kingdom corps performances will take place following the DCI Orlando Premier Event scheduled for Saturday, July 12 at 7 p.m. The Orlando Citrus Bowl, four-time home to the DCI World Championships, will play host that night to the performances of 10 top corps.

Disney has a long tradition of recognizing the great performances of drum corps, bringing corps members' talents to the thousands who walk through the Walt Disney World Resort each day. The Cadets, Glassmen and Teal Sound will celebrate the joy of marching music and show their stuff when they march in front of Cinderella Castle at 2:30 p.m., prior to the park's "Dreams Come True Parade."

Make this unique showcase of Marching Music's Major League in Disney World the perfect finish to a weekend, with the DCI Orlando event on Saturday the 12th, and Disney's special drum corps feature on the 13th! Fans can get tickets to Walt Disney World parks, including the Magic Kingdom, at DisneyWorld.com.

Hi all!

Need some info...DS is very interested in joining a drum corp next year...he's 16, going to be a junior. DH & I are both good with this, but just looking for some more info. We live in southern Illinois so 2 he is considering is the Caveliers...Rosemont, IL (about 6 hours away) or the Memphis (4 hours away) something or others, but they are a division lower than the Cavs.

Anyone have kids in or are in one of these corps?

What can you tell me about them? This would be DS's first time in DCI so I'm a bit clueless. I know that he will have to try out and there is no promise he'll make it for any corp. He does regular marching band at school and performs in their field shows, but how exactly is drum corp different. (It's been too many years since I had a friend in the Black Knights to remember. lol)

Any information ya'll can share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much! Have a great 4th!

The most important thing is that he never doubts himself. I never had experience marching drum corps either, but still managed to make it into a Division I corps. I used to rehearse marching technique and playing music with my high school band teacher, who used to march corps as well, about 2-3 days a week to help me train. My class had quite a few corps members, and I fell in love with the activity. Plus my friend who marched Phantom Regiment dared me to go try out for one, so I did. :rotfl:

Drum corps is very different from high school marching band for several reasons, the biggest one being that the members live with each other for a few months and sleep on the tour busses and gym floors during that time. The arrangements are far from luxurious, but after having marched outdoors for 10 hours in the sun, where one sleeps isn't really an issue any more. ;) I know I felt a huge sense of accomplishment after the season was over because everyone in the corps was working very hard for the same goal, and it feels wonderful.

Given your location, I'd suggest Phantom Regiment and Cavaliers. Since he still has a few years to go before aging out, he may want to try a Division II corps so he can "test out the waters" a little bit before joining a Division I corps. Trust me, there are some great, competetive Div. II corps out there as well.

I pretty much echo everything you said. At 16, the chances of getting into a top 12 corps, especially the two in your area, could be fairly low. It might be benneficial to try out for one of those corps for the experience, then go to a div II or III corps and try to get in.

The other thing is a Div I corp is not for everyone. I marched BLue Stars when they were Div II, took a year off, and came back for their first year of Div I. I ended up not being able to march for health reasons, but after watching what my bf went through, I'm kinda glad I didn't march. It is an entirely different world in Div I in a number of different ways. Some kids will march a div II or III corps and stay with them until age out.

I hope that helps. Drum corps is an awesome experience and no matter the corps, he will come back a changed person!

Momsgoofy,
I fully agree with the other posters. Encourage him to march a Division 2 or 3 corps first to gain experience. It will be a fulfilling experience. The chances of a 16 or 17 year old making the Cavaliers or Phantom on first audition are pretty slim. Encourage him to watch dvd's of the top corps to get an idea of technique. A good Div. 2 or 3 corps will definitely help him on his way. You need to be exceptionally talented to make it in Division One top 6 or 7 corps.
Best of luck to your son!

As to not get MOMSGOOFY confused, there is no suce thing as Div I, II, or III any longer.
DCI changed this year to World class (formerly Div I) and Open class (formerly Div II and III).

You can check out info at the DCI.org site which can link you to different corps sites.

Open class is definitely the way to go. Get in, get feet wet, see if it is something he truly enjoys. (he will) Drum Corps is an amazing activity and well worth the expereince!!

I was 16 when I marched a Division I corps, so it's not impossible. I wish I could've marched another year or two, but I also had health issues that apparently bothered the staff and was asked to "reconsider" my auditioning for my second season, so I didn't go back. While it was painful that I wasn't "allowed" to join again, the previous year was definitely life-changing and was an amazing experience. I recommend the experience to anyone who is interested.

i joined the bluecoats when i was 17. i got a spot again when i was 18. its not impossible. you just have to have really high expectations when you go in. Make a name for yourself. Make sure the instructors notice you in a positive way. They need to remember your name, your face, for you to get through audition rounds.

The best advice I can give is don't be scared and meet lots of people at audition camps. The best friends I have are those who I met in November. Some of them made it, some of them went to other groups...etc.

If you get rejected at a World Class corps, not only will they suggest where you should go next, but they will give you tons of advice for improvment so that you can join the ranks next year. Their goal is always to get kids in the group or to get kids in DCI. You son will walk away from an audition hopefully feeling like he is wanted and welcome!

p.s. big news for me
I'm going back to the Troop next year potentialy for pit.

Actually, Invisible Children brings up a good point. I was a member of a community theater that put on half-decent productions. A friend encouraged me to visit other local theaters to see performances. I compiled a list of the groups that were doing shows I liked, groups that had great actors, directors, sets, etc. I decided to audition for a few shows at these theaters. To my surprise, I was cast the first three times I auditioned, and was in three great productions in a row. Bottom line, go in prepared and with confidence in your abilities. The quality of the people I work with now is unbelievable, and a local poll by a television station named us the best of Boston.

OK...the Madison show was GREAT! I was at the stadium a little over 6 hours! I REALLY liked the "Troopers" show...I thought it was well executed and well rounded. I took some pictures, but they're not great-all I had was my phone. I'm hoping to get them posted to my facebook in a couple of days. I have to say, and I know this is a touchy subject, but I was a bit disappointed in The Cadets show...they had the people out in the middle with microphones again. Their marching and playing are so excellent that I think they really don't need it. Oh well...some friends and I are plannign on watching the finals at the local movie theatre.

My opinion, SHUT UP!!!!!!! I don't go to a drum corps show to be preached to-especially when the preaching is seemingly written by a 16 year old. THAT SAID, I love what the Cadets do visually and musically. They are skilled musicians who march their butts off. The distraction of the narration, the "stage" and the pithy "message" leave me scratching my head. IMO they have a tremendously talented drum corps and a director willing to take chances and advance the activity. But trying to turn the activity into a platform for banal Dr. Phil philosophy is, (once again IMO) a mistake.
Give me BAC any day!!! :woohoo:
Disclaimer: I am a fan of the activity, and applaud every corps for their efforts. I last attended finals in 2005 and stood for every corps and applauded until my hands hurt. I know how hard these people work, and whether or not I like the show itself, I appreciate their dedication and commitment.

I lived in So. Cal. forever.... never finals closer than Denver. I decide to move here and the next summer finals are 30 minutes from where I lived  in Pasadena.

Oh well... I get this weekend (see ya there Mike), a day at MK sweating with the corps :woohoo:

AND...... a cool comfy theater next month  with little to no energy and excitement!!

Very nice meeting you last weekend...too bad I picked the WRONG weekend to be there!

I will get to see the Cavies and Santa Clara in a couple of weeks at the Crusaders show, plus I get to perform with the Crusaders Sr. corps that night...Can you say Conquest..ahh the old days!. 5 days prior I will be performing at the same field at Mission Drums Sr. corps show..with both the Crusaders, and Mass Brass that night...That week should be a hoot...Youtube video to follow!...

First off I must congratulate Crown for beating the Cadets! They truly deserved this first time ever accomplishment tonight, and I am so glad I got to witness it!

Keep up the great work Crown!

Now about the show. First of all, this stadium needs to be imploded, plain and simple! It's in a very bad neighborhood, it's run down, and it's mismanaged! We parked near where the corps parked, and had to walk to the complete opposite end of the stadium to get in, and I knew this would be the case. But when they told us we couldn't exit the "corps gate" where quite literally we could see the truck was ridiculous! Look I know the area is tight, but this is drum corps, not a Rolling Stones concert! I want to get to my car, its right there, let me go....BUT NOOO. So we had to schlep all around the stadium once again, through the hood, with no street lights and no police presence. Not a nice thing for any activity.

Parking is basically rare in a stadium lot, and you park wherever someone is selling a spot. So we ended up parking at the Elks Club, and they put us right next to the big lake near the stadium, literally 1 foot away from the lake on a hill that has been rained on for the past month.....Anyone else smelling trouble? By the time we got out of the show they had so many cars packed in there was no way we were gonna get out. Long story short we got stuck in the mud, on a downward slope, literally inches from a lake. Shrek is going ballistic at this point! :sad2: "We need someone to help push!" Well there were lots of other words too, but we wont go there! So I get out of the truck and look around, and low and behold there are some bushes.

I notice an odd odor coming out of said bushes! :scared1:

You know, I had to chuckle, the more things change in Drum Corps the more they stay the same.:smokin:

So after I interrupted the post performance relaxation ceremony I asked these kids if they would help, and in true Drum Corps fashion, they jumped right in and got us out of our fix! Thank God!

Now onto the corps...

Teal Sound - Great Div 2 corps, they have a good show. Little sloppy, but hey it's July

Crossmen - Lacked GE, pretty boring, but kind of clean

Spirit - Another corps I didn't care for too much, guard was very sloppy tonight.

Colts - Love the show, but get rid of the male baton twirler....who twirls for hours and hours.....If I want to watch a guy twirl a baton I'll go to a big ten football game! Is Cesario with them? Lots of costume changes and color!

Glassmen - Thought they were the hit of the first half of the show. A very nice carnival theme, and the balloon trick was just enough to get your attention. Love how they played off the balloon that popped!

Blue Stars - I love this show! Just enough of a theme, talent, and corps that was pretty on tonight! Well deserved score!

Boston Crusaders - I liked the show, and they were pretty clean, but not my favorite Boston show. I love the onfield warm-up, and the Conquest ending, but the bulk of the show kind of is just.......ok.

Blue Coats - Let me start by saying I am not a fan of the Blue Coats, but I loved this show! It has narration, a heavy, heavy theme, props, and mixes music from On the Waterfront to Rocky for a show about Boxing! But it works, works great, and they were smoking tonight!

Carolina Crown - Love Love this show! What's not to like? Talent everywhere, songs we have been listening to for years, and I must say, I think at times they out Phantom the Regiment, out Vanguard Santa Clara, and even show the Cadets what it could and should look like! Its old school, just a bunch of songs thrown together! That's what I paid for! To listen to some songs, played on a football field, with some damn good drill and guard work! Thank you Crown! I literally had to remind myself to breathe during the ballad!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=iwlNUuus_F8

The Cadets - I do not like this show at all, in fact, I may even say I hate it! Talent galore, no arguing that, but who can see it? Let's just get right down to it. I don't know Sarah, I don't care about Sarah, and I don't want to hear about Sarah's problems. I have my own problems, and friends with problems, I came to a show tonight to be with friends in a happy atmosphere, and to enjoy drum corps! If I wanted to see the Oprah show I would go there. I understand what they are trying to accomplish in the name of art, but you have to give me a reason to care about Sarah. Not just hey, here is Sarah, she had breast cancer, is married, and loves her job, and you know what she figured out? If you just snap your finger you can be happy!

NOT

Well I'm sure I will have more to say on this subject, but that's all I've got for tonight. Tomorrow will be better, parade day! And last time I checked, electronics were still illegal at the Magic Kingdom!:lmao:

He would too!

I wish I could have been there. I finally broke down and bought DCI Fan network and I'm lovin it! I watched 3 solid hours of drum corps with my best friend last night. You just can't go wrong! 2008 shows, 200 Cadets, 1996 Scouts, 1980s Star of Indiana Disney tribute show, all the way to 1976 Blue Stars malaguena. Anyone who doesn't have fan network should seriously consider getting it. It's amazing. Every top 12 performance back to 1975 and audio from 1972,73,and 74. It's the best 70 dollars I've ever spent

I look forward to youtube videos of marching in MK. What an awesome honor. have fun and be sure to report back!

AH!! the spirit of CorpsNow onto the corps...

My view:

Teal Sound - Great Div 2 corps, they have a good show. Little sloppy, but hey it's July
Sorry I didn't see Teal, was hung up in the "lot".. did the show start a early or what?
Crossmen - Lacked GE, pretty boring, but kind of clean
Have to disagree with you on this one.... way to much going on and very sloppy!! Musically was just ok.
Spirit - Another corps I didn't care for too much, guard was very sloppy tonight.
sorry, I think I slept thru Spirit, no energy, ok score, sloppy guard
Colts - Love the show, but get rid of the male baton twirler....who twirls for hours and hours.....If I want to watch a guy twirl a baton I'll go to a big ten football game! Is Cesario with them? Lots of costume changes and color!
Do colleges still have baton twirlers? Good show!
Glassmen - Thought they were the hit of the first half of the show. A very nice carnival theme, and the balloon trick was just enough to get your attention. Love how they played off the balloon that popped!
Agree :)
Blue Stars - I love this show! Just enough of a theme, talent, and corps that was pretty on tonight! Well deserved score!
Agree again:) Boston Crusaders - I liked the show, and they were pretty clean, but not my favorite Boston show. I love the onfield warm-up, and the Conquest ending, but the bulk of the show kind of is just.......ok.
One of the best shows of the night. Lots of energy, great crowd responses. Glad they finally broke the 80's :cheer2:
Blue Coats - Let me start by saying I am not a fan of the Blue Coats, but I loved this show! It has narration, a heavy, heavy theme, props, and mixes music from On the Waterfront to Rocky for a show about Boxing! But it works, works great, and they were smoking tonight!
Me being and avid "old style" drum corps fan, believing narration belongs anywhere but on the field, found it a pleasant surprise with this show.. not over done and not distracting from the actual performance, but I so agree with Mike.. Great Show!!
Carolina Crown - Love Love this show! What's not to like? Talent everywhere, songs we have been listening to for years, and I must say, I think at times they out Phantom the Regiment, out Vanguard Santa Clara, and even show the Cadets what it could and should look like! I literally had to remind myself to breathe during the ballad!
Amazing!! Crown has totally pulled me into their fan club the past few years! Medal worthy? I hope so :cheer2: :cheer2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iwlNUuus_F8

To all of you who replied to my question...thanks so much! I just got back from a week at WDW and appreciate everyone's comments.

Well, DS tells me the kids that are wanting to audition will be looking at Phantom Regiment to do so. I think their HS assistant director has been working with a few of them who he thinks has some potential. I know he's got those "big expectations" a couple of ya'll mentioned and so does DS's private music teacher and it's rubbing off on DS. I just don't want him to get a big head or get his hopes up too high to be disappointed...but that is Mom talking. (And that Mom will be suggesting a lower division to tryout for the first time.) I am behind him 100% on this endeavor if it's really what he wants to pursue. I know there are many great things he can gain from it and wouldn't want to deny him the opportunity if he does get it. But at the same time I want him to know that it's a HUGE commitment for him and if he gets it, then he's with it for the duration. He's got a good work ethic so I don't think that would be a problem. Since I returned from WDW, he's told me he's reconsidering his career options. For the last couple of years he's been thinking of medicine, but now he's listening to his heart and is thinking about being a musician in some form or another.

In any case, thanks for all the info and support! I'll keep ya'll posted on how it goes for DS.

Thanks Mike! I appreciate the video, and especially the GREAT report! After hunting down some Youtube video of the Crown, I agree 100%. I did see them last week in Bristol, RI warming up, and yep, loved the sound!

Just got home from a DAY in the sun. First "Drill Practice" in 30 years! OUCH!!!!!!! My head is burnt to a crisp...dang astro turf stinks! Lets just say THANK GOD for my 14 year old daughter who keeps replacing the wet towel I am keeping on my head to try and bring the blazing temps down. Hey Rick,
I totally appreciate the blazing scalp after working the Revere Flea Market this past weekend. OUCH!! Hope the Crusader Alumni do a great show! Love to see them every year giving their all.
Crown deserved to win in Orlando from every thing I've heard. Cadets better look at their program if they are hoping to continue to be in the top ranks. If former members are not liking it, it must be a weak concept. A shame, because they are one of my favorite corps of all time!

Thanks Mike for the videos! Forgive me if I offend any other corps, but where I come from(and that would be Blue Stars) you have an image to uphold and that pretty much consists of being as hardcore as possible. Of the 3 corps, I felt only the Cadets were the ones to show their style, maintain their lines, and do everything by the books. I understand not every corps feels the need to never smile, but they should all expect at least straight lines and uniformity.

I still congratulate all 3 corps on marching in MK, but my hats really go off to the Cadets for demonstrating the difference between marching band and drum corps.

I haven't watched the Orlando show yet, but will do so as soon as it's online! I can't wait!

Teal - No Shako's No guard equiptment.

Cadets - No guard equiptment (In fact a nice young girl who sat next to us even asked...."Oh is that their drill team?")

So my hat goes off to the Glassmen for demonstrating the best "corps" attitude in the parade.

Funny story, I parked at the Grand and took the monorail over. As we drove by the canal where they park the light parade I noticed the Teal Horn Line warming up there on the grass....I wanted to yell so bad..."Stop the monorail now!" :rotfl:

If you call what the cadets guard did in the parade "maintaining their lines", I'd hate to see what your idea if "jiving" would be!:scared1:

And if you honestly didn't think you would offend anyone with those comments, all I can say is WOW.

ok I'm glad you edited that, because my comments about the parade are absolutely NO reflection of my thoughts on the field.

And for clarification, no I'm not counting the guard in any of the 3 corps because to be honest I've never seen a drum corps guard that does anything worthwhile in a parade. Even in blue Stars all they did was march and twirl and do waves. Like the first person would spin around, then 4 counts later the next line, etc. There was no set routine or anything like that.

I'm talking entirely about the hornlines and drumlines. I just thought the Cadets performed best.

OrlandoMike

As far as the corps proper goes, of course Cadets are going to look the best, they are in a league of their own, goes without saying.

As for the Color Guard....I absolutely hate the waving dancing thing! And don't even get me started about wearing warm up suits in a parade! How about guarding the Colors....in full uniform? GASP!

I know the MK does not allow weapons to be thrown in the air, and I completely understand, but carrying a flag at order arms is what I would prefer to see, much like the Glassmen did. As far as uniforms go, I like the Cavies approach. The guard has a parade uniform that is the same as the corps proper, so they give a unified appearance. Granted, many color guard field uniforms would not make it in a street parade these days! Remember the Cavies bicycle show? Imagine those kids marching down Main Street USA in those uniforms? :scared1:

Ok, makes sense, and I will agree with that. IN fact the guard looked like they were with somebody else. :lmao: And although, Danny Boy conjures up nightmares from when I competed against 27, it sounded great.

As far as guards, they are to add "color", hence the original name, "color guards". And in my day (oh the aches and pains - :rotfl: ) they did just that. BTW, I won't let my wife read this post....she was in the guard after she got braces and had to drop playing horn. IMO, the guard more than made up for just marching straight lines holding the flag in the parades with the "calisthenics" they had to perform during the show.

I'm not going to bash any of the corps, but I'm just not feeling any of the magic I used to feel when I'd watch DCI shows. I'm seeing a lot of repetition from recent previous years both musically and visually. It just seems like there's a lack of creativity going on right now. It's kind of sad because I used to be excited about going to shows throughout the season, but I have very little desire to go this year. :sad1:

Okay......I was going to rant about a couple corps in particular, but I stayed up all night and need to get some sleep.

I know the kids and staff members are working hard but something is just not right here.

You live in Boston, you do NOT root for a California team...

It's just not allowed!:confused3

I love this thread. Thanks to those who posted links to youtube. I'm a dancer (& dance teacher) who used to perform with my highschool marching band. *I have lots of band camp stories:) Anyhow, for a small ohio school, we had a great marching band and always went to state competition. I've danced on lots of stages in my life, but nothing compares to the feeling of dancing in front of a huge crowd in a stadium with a powerful band behind you! I have some great memories of being on the field with the sound from the band vibrating in my chest.

I really need to get to one of these shows. I see one near me in Toledo, but I'll be on vacation then. Maybe next year? My kids and DH would love it too, I hope.

Anyhow...Thanks for posting!!!!!:goodvibes
