NO WAY!:sad2:
I'm all about restraint now that I'm in the dog house.

So you lost control, were restrained and now you're in the "dog house"?

That DOES sound like a wild time!

I'm not going to bash any of the corps, but I'm just not feeling any of the magic I used to feel when I'd watch DCI shows. I'm seeing a lot of repetition from recent previous years both musically and visually. It just seems like there's a lack of creativity going on right now. It's kind of sad because I used to be excited about going to shows throughout the season, but I have very little desire to go this year. :sad1:

Okay......I was going to rant about a couple corps in particular, but I stayed up all night and need to get some sleep.

I know the kids and staff members are working hard but something is just not right here.

Does anyone else feel this way?

hhmm I don't know how many corps you have seen this year, but I don't get that feeling at all. BD and Cavies both have original show concepts as far as I'm aware and so do the Blue Stars. Cadets...despite my opinion, are also using music and a concept that hasn't been used before and yet Crown is blowing socks off with their ode to the traditional.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me if corps reuse music or a show theme. Anytime a corps plays malaguena(and I don't care what corps it is) I'll be on my feet screaming. 1996 scouts ::drool:: probably my favorite drum corps show of all time. While I appreciate original music, I'm all for a crowd pleasing show full of recognizable music.

I'll admit, I haven't seen SCV at all (although I'm looking forward to it), and have only seen clips of Blue Devils so far.

I don't have a problem with reusing themes that have been used before for shows. Sometimes that can be a good thing. Thematically, I love what the Cavies are doing. (Have you seen their guard uniforms? Faaaa-bu-lous! ;) ) The taiko drumming is also a great touch. As a designer, artist and huge drum corps geek who tends to watch shows over and over once I get the Finals DVD, my problem is more with the drill design (or lack thereof) and guard equipment work. The majority of the top 12 corps have started to almost mimic what other corps are doing visually. Sure....the Cavies' visual programs were amazing and ground-breaking at the beginning of the decade.....but their visual programs have become repetetive and extremely predictble. (Try and count how many times the brass starts doing interesting curvy drill, but then goes straight to a block. Trust me, you'll lose count after about 10.) Since Mike Gaines has been such an influence in this activity, several other corps have started using similar visual programs. I want to yell, "Hey! Eyes on your own paper!" :rotfl2: Even west coast corps seem to be becoming similar to what the east coast corps are doing, and vice versa. And then there's the whole "scatter" problem, where we have about 5 different groups of guard members, all doing completely different things. Usually during this process the brass/battery are doing unrelated separately "staged" things as well. My question is this: "When a corps does this several times during a show, where is your attention supposed to be focused?"

Now, if we step back to the 90's, just about every top-12 corps had a very unique visual style. Even scattered staging seemed to have more of a visual purpose.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I'm just a "visual learner", and it's been bothering me. :)

But lets discuss the closer......

MonorailMan is right, its nothing new, in fact it's a complete rip off!

Every song, every drill move, every guard trick, all old stuff!

I :rotfl2: when I saw them walk over the guard!

I'll bet between the regular posters on this thread, we have marched at least 90% of this show! :lmao:

But it works! It's entertaining! I'm all for expanding the activity, but remember, it has to entertain people! It's drum corps, not a social experiment.

Everyone is saying Cadets have changed their ending and to watch out..

If I were Crown, I'd add a Bflat tuning at the beginning, and a Z pull at the end, and call it a day!:worship:

So what do you guys think?

Crown actually has one of the more enjoyable shows this year in my opinion. Even though the Cavies' horn line stepped over their guard in 98, I will give Crown credit for doing it while the rifles are still spinning on their backs. That can't be easy. :worship:

Someone posted the Cadets' show from Orlando, and the ending in that clip was different (for the better) than what they started the season out with, but I'm not sure if they've changed it again since then or not.

And yes.......the Z-Pull is one of those drill moves that I love seeing. It's tradition, but it's still really effective when done well. But only if it's performed by the Cadets. :rotfl2:

My sister and I were thinking about going to the DCI show in Denton, TX. How are the shows this year? Are they worth sitting out in the hot Texas sun for? I haven't seen a live DCI performance since I was on the drum line in my high school marching band in the 90's (92 or 93, I can't remember which year year our drum line went to the workshop with the Scouts). Right now I'm just so bum'd that we couldn't make it to the one in Dallas. Thanks in advance for any advice.

While the shows change from year to year, I would never turn down an opportunity to support the activity and the kids marching their hearts out for their show. I am unlucky because I have to make newlyweds happy every flippin saturday and as a result, I missed my opportunity to see the Blue Stars this year. I love DCI fan network, but it isn't the same as in person of course.

If you have the chance, go. I'll sit in the blazing sun or pouring rain to see a show

:lmao: Well back in them days (78) I was with North Star, and until DCI came up with the slotting THEY wanted for the Nationals, we kicked your butts...:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I mean really, pom poms, vs. our big lips...:rotfl: And we had Jerry Noonan whom Maynard wanted to meet after hearing him in Ole (79). :thumbsup2

Too bad George can't see past the end of his nose and embrace the Light Brigade and call it what it should be called, "27 Alumni"!:thumbsup2

Kicked our butts ONCE in the first show of the year, and then we bounced back. :rotfl: I loved North Star and remain close to Mike Merritt and the Barret sisters. A great corps, and Children of Sanchez and Sir Duke are two of my all time favorites. Big lips vs. pom poms = :lmao: :lmao:
GO CROWN and BAC!!! :grouphug:

I agree with monorailman. Drum corps is very derivative. That said, the kids are performing their butts off, and deserve our support and applause.
From what I've been reading on DCP, Blue Devils are performing a sort of parody of current trends, with terrific results. I really look forward to seeing them and everybody else at the quarterfinals cinema performance.

First of all, the boys are showing their belly buttons just to taunt you :rotfl2: I know they're taunting me! mmm hot young guard boys..tan...skinny

"why do I get the feeling that my intermonalogue is being said out loud?"

ok enough of that, I have to behave myself!

As far as the scores, WHOA where did Madison come from?? I know they were redoing some major things in the show and it must have worked! It looks like the 12th slot might be more competitive for the Blue Stars than I though. Glassmen and scouts are creeping on them and I'm sure the Colts will make a surge.

The director of the guard I'll be working with this winter wanted to use that hot pink color for the uniforms this year, at which point I started banging my head against the desk. Not because I hated the idea, mind you. It was because looking at the color was giving me seizures.

Gotta love Corpsreps.com!

The Blue Angels, formed in 1961, were a junior marching and maneuvering corps based in Danvers, Massachusetts.
The corps finished 19th in the 1966 American Legion junior Prelims in Washington, D.C. and the 1970 U.S. Open in Marion, Ohio. There is no record of their having competed in DCI.

They merged in 1975 with the Reveries of Revere, Massachusetts, to form the Blue Angels/Reveries. This merger corps (also known as the Blueveries) lasted less than one year before merging with the Wilmington Cardinals to form North Star in the fall of 1975.

Very true, Mike. They weren't officially called the Blueveries, though. That was a nickname. In 1975 they were announced as the Reveries/Blue Angels. They merged that winter with the Beverly (formerly St. Mary's) Cardinals to become North Star. In the winter before the 1975 season, about 25 Reverie members went to 27th Lancers, and about the same amount went to North Star. North Star's first drum major defected to 27th in 1977 to become their drum major for the next two years. There was never a lot of animosity between the two corps - in fact, a few North Star alumni marched with the 1994 27th Lancer alumni corps. All good :wizard:

Ooops, not quite my Lancer friend. :) You forget about the "absorption" of the Melrose Vanguards in 75 to form the "Cardinals" of the "North Shore" which then included The Beverly Cardinals, and Wilmington Crusaders. The remainder of the merger did not take place until the winter of 75.

BTW, the corps teetered for the first several months, and there was some "infighting" between the factions, it was the tour of 76 when the equipment truck caught fire and all the equipment was lost prior to returning home to compete at Manning Bowl at the World Open that finally solidified the North Star into One Unit! At that time, I was still marching as drum major of the Valley Airs of Northbridge, but I knew one day I would wear the red black and white of North Star. I will never forget seeing the the big silver star that "your" eventual drum major stood on to direct the corps on the field with equipment lent to the corps by the Connecticut Classics, who also went through the bleachers at the same show to collect money to give to the corps to rebuild. (still brings a tear to my eye)The rest, is history.

There was never a lot of animosity between the two corps - in fact, a few North Star alumni marched with the 1994 27th Lancer alumni corps. All good :wizard:

Don't know about that...;) when ever we did our calisthenics we always did 31 instead of 30...why? simply because we needed a slot to add "sucks" prior to 28. :lmao:

Tongue in cheek my friend, 27 had an awesome corps in 79...and many other years. I play alongside many 27 alumni now at Mass Brass, and we have a great time elbowing each other.:lmao:

Don't know about that...;) when ever we did our calisthenics we always did 31 instead of 30...why? simply because we needed a slot to add "sucks" prior to 28. :lmao:

Tongue in cheek my friend, 27 had an awesome corps in 79...and many other years. I play alongside many 27 alumni now at Mass Brass, and we have a great time elbowing each other.:lmao:

Uugh! Calisthenics were pure torture, especially early in the AM. Now kids are running the entire field about 5 ba-jillion times before they start. I seriously think kids in the activity these days are robots. They're in far too good shape.

My daughter and her friend are in San Antonio tonight for tomorrows competition. I'm sure I will be getting text messages from her all day. Her friend was very excited tonight as they met a girl who was on Big Brother who was their waitress at Hard Rock Cafe. Both her and her friend are going to be in color guard at University of North Texas in Denton this fall. I may try to update you on the competition if she decides to share with me.

When I was in high school, my high school drum line did a clinic with the Madison Scouts. I was the lead on the cymbol line and they tought us some really cool things. In fact after that we were usually voted as top cymbol line at every competition.

The main reason that I asked is that I usually get really bad headaches if it's too hot.
My sister and I decided to go, and I took my DS10. It was hot and I did get the headache, but it was so worth it. My DS10 is getting the age in school that they get to start picking extra curricular activities. Eventhough I was in marching band in high school, I don't want to force my DS's to be in band. I was in band with too many kids that were forced to be in band and hated it. We just told them they had to do something. I don't want to force him, but I thought if he saw the DCI bands he would change his mind. After every band I would ask him what he thought. He would respond with either "it's hot", "my rear hurts", or one time he said "I'm sorry I spilled Sprite on your Coach". Then we saw the Cavs and now I might have a new favorite. After the Cavs performed I again asked him what he thought. This time, he was like "wow mom, can I do that." Then after we had been home a while he asked if he could get some drum sticks and a Cavs t-shirt for his birthday.

The first time I posted the video of the parade at the MK I tagged it with every drum corps name, the thing got pulled in an hour! There are no DCI related tags on it now.

Honestly, I think DCI is getting a bit pompous!

I mean really, lets boil this down, its a marching musical youth activity!

and it's PUBLICITY!!!! I understand copyright, but youtube is such a huge media venue, you'd think they'd be ok with a thing or two being posted. Besides if you're not posting a DCI video, but rather a marching performance in a HUGELY public venue(MK) I don't see where they have any right to pull that. What is it coming to when you can't take your own video camera to a free public place and post a performance on youtube. It sickens me.

I absolutely love BD's show, though I haven't seen the ending because the fan network clipped it off. I like their concept though. I didn't really notice they were making fun of corps trends. I'll have to look harder next time I view the show.

MonorailMan
07-21-2008, 04:05 PM
I could understand DCI pulling a video if it was actual footage of either Finals or a Regional competition since they make money from those, but pulling footage of a parade is just ridiculous. Half the time I'm sure the people pulling them don't even check to see what's on the video. I'm sure the tags have more pull in the decision to delete them than the actual footage itself.

I think a couple people were poking fun at the ending mostly because....well.....
We don't understand why they're currently in 1st place when the footage that was shown (about 2 minutes worth) had drill that was insanely easy in comparison to most other top-12 corps shows. What made it worse was that is was really dirty for a show that was recorded on July 19th. :scared1: It was 99% "follow-the-leader" type drill......straight lines weren't straight......intervals were all over the place.

I guess the thing that upsets me is this: From a judge's perspective, if the overall visual program and marching capabilities of a corps aren't given nearly as much consideration as the music, then....

1. Why are corps forced to spend hours upon hours marching basics?
2. Why do writers for the Cavaliers and Cadets put that much effort into writing their technically complex drill?

:confused3

Fellow fans,
I've been told the reason that it is pulled off of Youtube is because much of the music is copyrighted. The public performance of, say, a Billy Joel song requires that the artist be paid a royalty for the use of the music. Youtube videos are considered a public performance. So, Carolina Crown plays mostly classical music this year, and the copyrights are non-existant. They should allow their taped (showing my age) performances to be shown - however in fairness to all, anything labeled "DCI" or "Drum Corps" is banished from the site.
Although much of today's drum corps music is either original, or virtually unrecognizable from the source material, DCI and the corps are playing it safe, and rightfully so. Imagine if a corps was forced to give up a repetoire in July and change their show because a clip was bootlegged onto Youtube?
Just my thoughts...

Sorry if I sound too retro - - - but let the music and visual tell the story. If you want to have a show tell the story through narration, with a stage and "actors", you're not doing your job as a designer, IMHO. This is drum corps, not theater. Yelling, "I am Spartacus" is an impact. A huge story line urging the audience to give to cancer research is preaching. It's all about the people (not kids anymore, since they allow 22 year olds) telling the story through the marching and music. A little vocal enhancement doesn't bother me. I haven't seen corps this year and won't until quarter-finals. I'm sure Bluecoats narration won't bother me. Don't tell me the story, SHOW it to me.
Old school vs. New. I know. Just set against this becoming totally band-o.
Off the pulpit now... :rotfl:

how bout running out of gas literally 50 feet from a gas station and thus being stuck there for hours trying to get the bus going again.

Or the tire that blew out in the middle of the night, taking that entire bus's luggage, throwing it on teh food and equipment trucks, then cramming everyone onto the other 2 busses.

Or there was the fact that for 2 weeks of the season, we didn't HAVE a third bus because it broke down and thus had to either cram onto 2 busses again or I think we rented a bus or something.

I do remember a very nice bussing company based out of Denver that volunteered a driver(it was the owner actually) to come pick us up in Kansas and take us to Denver for the world championships because he loves drum corps. That's dedication.

Ahh the fun of touring with a Div II corps who was going through the growing pains on their way to Div I.

Yet I miss it oh so much

Does anyone know if the tickets for "Big, Loud, and Live" usually sell out? Since taking my DS10 to DCI on Sunday all he wants to talk about is going and watching the Cavs. Should I go ahead and buy the tickets ahead of time or will I be ok with getting the tickets when we get there? We live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, so there isn't just one theater showing it, so it's not like there is only one theater for everyone that wants to go to choose from.

I've never gone, I've been lucky enough to be at Quarters the past few years, but I just asked Shrek, and he said it would be a good idea to pre-purchase your tickets. He said it sold out the past few years here in Orlando.

I would love to be able to go to the Quaters. I would really love to be able to go to finals. I wish they would show the finals at the theaters as well.

looks like BlueStars slipped a little bit. They're in 11th now :confused3

I'm sure they'll surge though. I hear they just got a new ending so it needs cleaning. They'll come back!

There was a 30-second commercial on the Food Network a few minutes ago for the local COWlumbus DCI show!!! I've never seen any promotional material for this show, except for online. I'm....amazed. It's about time!

Unfortunately, this year's show has the least amount of top-12 corps that I've seen in the past 4 or 5 years. It's a shame because Crew Stadium has great seating/views. It's a great venue, and more corps should sign up for it because COWlumbus has lots of people interested people.

Okay......I'm done now. :surfweb:

We took a bus of 35 kids from DS's high school band to see this...drove 4 hours on a stinkin' yellow school bus...:scared: But it was so worth it! The kids who knew about DCI were thrilled and the kids who'd just heard about it got even more excited about marching season. It was a great oppportunity and DS and the other kids who are wanting to try out for corps this fall. But man, do those kids work their behinds off!!!

I am getting into this year's discussion late, but thanks to Orlando Mike for sending me here. Thus far I have attended the Toledo, Orlando and Murfreesboro show (just got home from Nashville on Sat.) and am looking forward to going back to Toledo and on to Indy next week.

This has been one very interesting year. The Cadets have really changed their "narration" and from what I gather from Hopkins' blog, he is cutting another 45 seconds out of the beginning. I disliked the show in Toledo, and I found the ending in Murfreesboro cheesy.

WOW on Phantom. I heard a collective gasp from the crowd in Murfreesboro a couple of times. That show is totally amazing from the time it enters the field with the DM being brought in by the slaves until the very end.

My guess is that Crown will win The Spirit of Disney award.

SCV rocks. Mind, body, spirit. Another WOW show.

Cavies got the moves. Their drill is amazing to watch.

Bluecoats have a very good show, but I find myself watching the boxers and not paying much attention to anything else.

Blue Devils.... eh. doesn't do much for me except burn my retinas.

Whoever did the flags for BK did an amazing job. They are truly beautiful.

Can't wait to head out next week. We are staying in Indy and plan a few good meals.

Thanks for letting me participate in this discussion.

I used to be a huge fan of the Cadets (for personal reasons :rolleyes1 ) throughout the 80s, 90s and the first couple years of this decade. I'm not sure what Hoppy is thinking, to be quite honest. I know he wants to try and be different.....but, if you ask me, in the past the Cadets have always had their own personal flare that made them different. On the other hand, he's one of those defiant people who tends to do things that you tell him not to.:confused3

As soon as the Blue Devils took the field my sis and I started talking about how we hated what the color gaurd was wearing. My son acted like he didn't understand what we meant. My sister asked him if he could see the color guard. In a very sarcastic voice he said, "Nooo mom I can't. You know if they really wanted to be seen you would think they would wear something that would get some attention.
My son said he loves the pics of the Cavs you took.
I have another question. I hadn't seen DCI in 10 yrs, so this might be a new thing. I noticed that in several of the cores that the color gaurd did not have on the same exact thing. Some had the same bottoms, and different tops. Others had the same , but some had the mid section showing while others didn't. So, is this a new thing or did I just not notice it before?

Mike, I can honestly say that if you have a chance to see Phantom in Toledo, go for it. I wasn't going to drive down there and back on Monday night and head to Indy on Tuesday, but after seeing them in Murfreesboro, I just HAVE to see them again on Monday!

Just watching them come on to the field and set up for the show is a show in and of itselfl. There is so much to see and the drill!!!~

So, I will be in Toledo to see PR again. It is SOOO worth it.

Hey all drum corps fans...

I understand the Crusaders are struggling a bit with finances as I am sure some other corps are. Remember, when budgets were completed the price of fuel was not where it is now. Anyhow, I would ask that anyone who is interested in the DCI fan pass consider purchasing it from www.crusaders.com. DCI is giving 50% of the proceeds to the corps who's website you sign up on. I heard they have spent as much as $4300 in a week for fuel, when the same period last year cost $2000. These kids are working hard and deserve a chance and shouldn't have to concern themselves for cash. They also have a place on their site you can just contribute. I hate to sound like I am begging, but this really hits home. My heart still aches from the days that North Star folded due to finances. I don't think the Cru is near that, but I know they are hurting. Thanks for anything you can do.:thumbsup2

I have seen the fuel fund jars at the souvie trucks and I am doing what I can to help all of them out in that aspect.

We saw the show in Charleston, WV last night! WOW! Blue Devils were amazing--and colorful! The "color" guard seem much more bright in person that the pictures that I've seen posted! Excellent show though--as the scores prove! Phantom were very good also--the crowd really seemed to enjoy the Crusaders too, but they were the first group to perform after a break and really came out with a bang in comparision to the first three (Pioneer, Blue Stars, Academy). All of these kids deserve a huge pat on the back for all of the work and effort that they give.:thumbsup2

Looks like Cavies have an Alumni Corps!

And if you cant get to a show, most drum corps have a place on their website where you can donate for the fuel fund! 4 busses, two semi's, and support vehicles..think about it! We need to get these kids to Bloomington!

So I just got off the phone with a friend regarding tickets to finals...

She asked me if I wanted to go to Open Class finals.....DAH

Well I completly forgot!

What was open class changed to Division 1, and is now World Class

What was Class A changed to Division 2, and is now Open Class

And I hear  the All Girl Division is no longer!

Why do they do this? Are they just trying to confuse me????

I knew nothing about this. I guess I wasn't paying attention.
It's almost like when they changed WGI classes. And a few years ago, when they started allowing people over the age of 21 to compete in the Independant World class, the Senior Guard class kind of disappeared because anyone over 21 was then forced to compete in Independant World.....which isn't a good thing in my opinion.

Okay......I'm done now. ;)

I have been supporting the Troopers this season. Bought a t-shirt, and contributed to their fuel fund. I ain't got much, but that corps has brought me so much pleasure throughout the years! I encourage everyone on this thread to pick a corps and send a few bucks. Make a difference! (I also sponsor a Boston Crusader by sending "stuff" throughout the tour - food, a couple of bucks and GOLD BOND:cool1: . I figure without owning a car, and the money I save on tickets to shows, I might as well give back somehow.

Got this in the mail today, I'm kind of excited to hear about this!

In recognition of the Cadets' 75th Anniversary next year, George Hopkins, Director of the Cadets and the CEO of Youth Education in the Arts, announces that for the 2009 season, the Cadets Drum Corps will perform as the "Holy Name Cadets."

“The Cadets are very much aware of their heritage and of the greatness the corps has provided young people for decades and decades. In marching as Holy Name, we hope to give praise and recognition not just to the members of the Cadets through 1957, but to the Garfield Cadets, the Cadets of Bergen County, and today's Cadets," said Hopkins in making the announcement.

They unfortunately have a lot of haters out there at the moment. I've never heard an audience "boo" a corps until this year. (I've heard an audience "Bluuuuue".....but that's completely different. ;) ) Hopefully they're not just doing this to get people back on their side. I think it'd be pretty amazing to hear them get announced as "Holy Name".

Ok, it would be "oh so cool" if'n they went back into the archives and pulled some of the older charts with some reworking for the "special" year. Of course that would mean, no amps, no narration (none needed), NO SAXOPHONES, which is something the "Hopping Mad Man" would like to see. :rotfl: Looking forward to it anyhow...

NOW, last night I went to the East Coast Classic. First, my personal performance with the Crusaders Sr. Corps. I have not had the hair raise on my arms like that in about 30 years. The reception was great, but the ovation at the end of the show was phenomenal for a bunch of "old people" ;) We actually march to the end zone playing "California Dreaming". When we get to the end zone, we turn back, turn 45 degrees to the stands, and the "Calls" start, then Jack, our drum major, grabs a horn and plays the Jimmy Centerino solo while we form a block behind the drumline, then start conquest. On the main body of the song the block steps forward and the horns go to the "GE box". It was right then there were no longer any butts in the seats...and the ovation at the end was fantastic. Heck, that's what we do it for, right? Yep, awesome feeling.

I did get back in to see SCV, the Cavies, and Crusaders Jr.. SCV was good, but not great. The show was flat even though some of the horn stuff was great. The guard was interesting, but that's as far as I will go with that. It's certainly not the SCV I remember.

Cavies were up next. I was prepared to not like them, but that lasted about 30 seconds into the show! WOW is all I can say! And the best description I can come up with is "Innovative". I will be honest, I never really did like them for some reason, but I was absolutely floored by their performance. How the horn line can bend harmony like that and actually remain in tune is beyond me. If you haven't seen them but will be getting to, definitely DO NOT GET YOUR HOTDOG during this performance! I am still in awe!

The Cru. Well, while I enjoyed the balance displayed and the over all sound, I kept waiting for that "wow" factor, and quite frankly it never happened. I am not so sure it's the show itself, or a lack of excitement on the part of the performers. Obviously I am rooting for them, but unless these kids get excited about what they are doing, I don't think they will get much above 8th at best. Yes, it was nice to hear the little piece of Conquest at the end, and yes that got the crowd up again, but they need more moments along the way, IMO.

I had consciously stayed away from DCI for some time now. I didn't even go when it was in Foxboro, which is about 12 miles from my house. I was "hating" what they were doing to what I loved so much, but from what I have seen this year from "most" corps, I am hooked again, IN A BIG way! At 51, and having been involved in drum corps my "entire" life (first stop after being born was a drum corps show - dad has been involved since he was 10 - one of them crazy percussionist) , and it has become apparent that the activity has almost completed the full circle. It is once again exciting, and entertaining. Before some of you jump all over me, this is my opinion. Just as I don't care to go to the opera, you can't tear me away from a good jazz concert. So please don't take it as a criticism. It is an observation based on my likes and dislikes. The Cavies, Phantom, Crown, have all caught my attention, and I wish I had the $$'s to travel to finals. I still don't trust DCI. I am just waiting for them to screw it up again!:sad2:

I dunno......I know a lot of people loved it when they did 'Malaguena' in 2003, but it just wasn't a memorable show for me. Definitely not one of my favorite Cadets shows. I think I tend to like them best when they try to innovate (withOUT amplification) with cutting edge shows.....like "Stonehenge" or even "To Tame the Perilous Skies". I even think their "Les Miserables" show was innovative.

On the heels of the recent announcement that the Cadets will appear on the field in 2009 as the Holy Name Cadets, Director George Hopkins announced the corps' program base for the coming summer during a meeting with members and staff prior to their Allentown, Pa., rehearsals.

The “working title” for the 2009 Holy Name Cadets program will be “Lenny,” a reference to the great Leonard Bernstein, according to Hopkins.

Some of the background told by Hopkins included some milestones in 2009:

The year-long celebration of the 90th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth
The 50th anniversary of the arrival of West Side Story on Broadway
And, the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Holy Name Cadets
Just a few miles from the Cadets’ hometown in Allentown, Pa., West Side Story will return to Broadway, the cultural institutions of New York are doing countless renditions of various Bernstein compositions and the entire music community will turn to celebrate the huge impact “Lenny” has had upon the world of classical music, musical theater, and much more.

“Bernstein and his work has had a connection to the Cadets from the 1960’s through current day. Of great significance was the run of 1983, ‘84, ‘85, and ‘86 when the Cadets performed almost exclusively the work of the great New York composer,” said Hopkins. “The collision of so many anniversaries in one year gives us the opportunity to return to our roots at a time where we reflect on all that has allowed the Cadets 75-years of uninterrupted service to youth. At the same time, we plan to draw on the return of Mr. Bernstein’s work to the stage, and yes, of definite significance is the great Broadway Musical, WEST SIDE STORY!

When asked about details of the plans, Hopkins noted, “The 2008 team is hard at work on completing the final week of the season. This drum corps has proven to be special and we are thrilled to be able to spend hours and hours in search of excellence.”

“That said, we have much work to do regarding design, but you can be sure we will begin work on next year beginning the morning of Aug.10th. What I can say is we do plan to be unique in our approach. We plan to challenge the students, entertain the audience and bring to the field the best version of the Cadets possible. We will draw from the material in such a way that the musical base provides the foundation for a distinctive product that will be remembered, we hope, for years to come.”

Rehearsals for the 2009 Holy Name Cadets begin in November. With 46 age-outs, including a large number of percussionists, the corps would expect to have available somewhere around 80 or so positions for the new season. Interested in participating? Go to www.cadets.org, click the membership button, and fill in the short information form. Information will be sent to you about becoming a member of Holy Name Cadets.

The Cadets will perform at Allentown, Pa., on Saturday, Aug. 2nd during DCI Eastern Championships, in Westminster, Md., on Aug. 3rd during their home show, Music In Motion. They will then set up camp in Washington, Pa., Monday through Wednesday of next week as they continue to prepare for the 2008 DCI World Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Aug. 7-9th..

Stay tuned for more updates and information, including a unique plan for winter rehearsals.

The only reason I ask is because I think I have footage of her pushing a girl out of the way when they're leaning down on the front sideline. Aparrently the one I think is April didn't have her flag where it was supposed to be, so she pushed another girl out of the way and took hers. The poor girl did about 1-2 minutes of the show without a flag. I can't remember what show it was, though.

Thanks! :goodvibes I hadn't used that camera in about a year so I was pleased with the photos as well.

You're right...the color guard members in several groups have different tops...at first I thought it was a male/female thing, but then realized several of the girls had on different styles. I don't have a clue why...this was my first DCI event, but my gut is telling me that some girls are just more comfortable in the belly showing...sports bras...skimpy shirts than others and that some girls just look better in the longer and looser fitting shirts...:rolleyes1 I mean, this momma wouldn't want to be running her big chested self around on the field in a sports bra... someone might get hurt. In any case, I'm guessing it's a fairly new call being made by the stylistas in charge.

Dang - I was hoping it was the Devils - or the Satans - or Lucifer's lovelies

Dont fret Wally, the Crusaders are the only old school corps left! They still believe in gang warfare in the parking lot!

Oh and they helped Shrek and I push our truck out of the mud a month ago!! :thumbsup2

OK kids, I'd better log off, the cab will be here soon! Play nice this week!

Lets see, average 15 minutes per corps, at 15 corps = 3 hours 45 mins, give or take, plus 20 min intermission..... nah shouldn't be more than 4 hours

DCI finals used to be telecast "live" years ago on PBS, then they went to a delayed format. A few years ago ESPN used to carry the show on a delayed basis. Unfortunately, there will be NO telecasts this year.

However, if you go to the DCI.org website, they will have finals DVDs for sale in a few weeks.

Thanks for the info.. I was hoping not to pay for a video, but hey her birthday is coming up in November maybe I will get her one then. I just think DCI is an amazing event to watch. It was always my dream to join one when I reached 21 and could not twirl anymore, but not many had baton twirlers and I got married to my oldest dad (which did not last long)..But hey now that my two girls are involved in baton and drum corp that is just as awesome and the one I grew up in. I guess, according to a few vids I've seen, the Cadets have taken out a lot of the narration and have made a ton of changes over the past couple weeks. I'm not too fond of the drum changes, but the drill and guard work (the latter being extremely difficult) seem to have improved a ton. Now if they can just clean it up for Saturday.

I was going to see Big, Loud, Live tonight, but I have a sick DS. Does anyone know if they will show it on tv?
Also, I'm trying to figure out if I can find a vidoe of an old DCI performace, but I have no clue how to go about it, and I thought you guys could help. The hardest part is that I don't know what year it was done, or which core did it. Maybe if I explain it someone can help. My mom kept our band director's kids when I was in high school. The summer before my senior year (1993) we spent hours watching one DCI performance trying to figure out how they made the Phantom disappear. The core did a Phatom of the Opera theme. At the end the Phantom sat in a chair, was covered by a large black cloth by two girls in the colorgaurd. When they lifted the cloth off the Phantom was gone, and only a rose remained. The only things I know for sure is that it had to have been done before 1993 and that it was not a male only core. Any help would be great. Also, I believe in the same season another core did one where a guy dressed as a wizard made a girl from the color gaurd levatate. I would love to be able to get those on tape or DVD to be able to show my son. TIA for any and all help.

That was the Santa Clara Vanguard. However, SCV did Phantom of the Opera in both 1988 and 1989. Both shows actually ended similarly. In 88 there was a mask remaining, but I don't think anything was remaining in the 89 version (if I recall correctly). You can order DVDs at http://store.dci.org/1988_World_Championship_DVD_P1711C30.cfm (88 version).........or http://store.dci.org/1989_World_Championship_DVD_P1712C30.cfm (89 version).

WOW What a show! What a great group of top 17 this year! This is a year to get the DVD's for sure!

Glad to see the Scouts in 12th for now, hope they can hold on.

Glassmen are cute, but geesh, do they own 11th place or what?

Cadets have cleaned up the narriation, but it's still annoying!

I'm not usually a fan of any of the Blue teams, but I have to admit, the only one I dont care for this year is the Knights.

Bluestars, great show! Great to see them back in the top 12 for the first time since what.....1978? Blue Coats, wow, great theme, great hornline, great show. I even like BD for the first time in years.

Drill wise, nobody can touch SCV! That drill never stops from start to finish! Cant wait to watch that on the DVD high angle! Cavies...THAT PIT! Wow! They are producing sounds I have never heard from a drum corps before!

And Phantom! Un-freaking-believable! When the one drum major kills off the other one and takes control of the drum corps the crowd stands up and screams till the end of the show! I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it! A two minute standing ovation!

I like BD, and get the whole concept of the show, but I dont think they should be winning! But we have two more nights to sort that out!

The stadium is beautiful, although whatever they laid under the new turf is bleeding through, leaving black marks all over the field. I have been told this is the norm on new turf.

I changed rooms, and the new room is larger and cleaner.

The best part of the night, we found a bowling alley across the street from the hotel with a bar and grill! 5 of us......5 Cheeseburger platters, (best cheeseburger I have had in a long time) multiple draught beers, and the total bill before tip was ..........$32.00! :scared1:

Needless to say, we will be hitting that again tonight after the show! Nothing wrong with a burger and a beer on a budget!

The weather is perfect, it's great to see old friends again, and the corps are the best entertainment wise I have seen in many years!

Hope everyone enjoyed the movie last night! Order your DVD now!

I know how the Phantom dis-appears in the SCV show! :rolleyes1

Bands of America is putting pressure on DCI to make the scouts and cavies add girls to the corps! Needless to say, the cleaning fee to clean up the coffee I spit all over the computer has been added to my room bill! :lmao:

So any bets on who takes the "Spirit of Disney" Award?

It should be Phantom, but too much murder, so I say it will probably go to the Bluestars.....

" I know how the Phantom dis-appears in the SCV show! "
It's pretty easy if you look closely.

Ya that Phantom is a heavy breather!:rotfl2:

Well today is the last day.....sigh....why does vacation go by so quick? :confused3

I'm thinking having finals in Indy for the next 9 years might not be so bad, the Midwest is great, and I love it! But I say this sitting in a small college town in Indiana, not a big city, so we shall see....

Last night the show was great! Scouts made finals, Bluestars moved up to 8th, and Phantom took Cavies to make 2nd! Phantom was very flat last night,(or is that Phlat) so who knows what will happen tonight. Will they pull any surprises? Who else can they murder, a judge?:confused3

I was watching the top three last night and I got to thinking.....

If you look at this activity as the premier event for the marching musical activity, then perhaps Cavies or Phantom deserve to win. But if you view this activity as some sort of odd form of "art", then perhaps Blue Devils should win. Blue Devils do the usual park and play, but the whole show, as a form of art is there. So I guess we shall see tonight what the outcome is.

I will admit I get what BD is doing, and I actually like it, but is this the direction we want the activity to go? SCV marches an awsome drill from the time they enter the field till the time they leave, BD walks around and parks and plays. Which is better? :confused3

Well I'm gonna meet some friends for lunch, then I gotta pack, gotta leave early in the AM to get my flight!

Had a great time, but I wish I had another few days of vacation.......

Oh well, vacation always goes by faster then you want!

So I'm too ADD to flip through the last couple of pages since my last post...did anybody besides me go to the theatre for the quarter finals? It was comforting when 2 things happened: First, when the Cadets came out and starting moving their giant "centerpiece" out, people were audibly saying "NO WAY, NOT AGAIN!!!", then the commentators made reference to it being a "hard sell", then when they interviewed the director afterward, he got many boos. (can you tell I'm not a fan of the narration they did?)
Secondly, when Phantom Regiment got ROBBED, there were very loud disappointed boos.
Anyway, I missed the Webcast tonight b/c I had to work (somebody has to pay for the tickets to these things!)...anybody know the final outcome? (or do I even want to know?):confused3

Ladies and gentlemen........the Finals scores for the 2008 season.........

1. Phantom Regiment...................98.125
2. Blue Devils.............................98.100
3. Cavaliers................................97.325
4. Carolina Crown........................96.800
5. Cadets...................................94.750
6. Bluecoats...............................93.175
7. Santa Clara Vanguard...............93.025
8. Blue Stars..............................90.425
9. Blue Knights...........................88.250
10. Boston Crusaders...................87.275
11. Glassmen.............................87.200
12. Madison Scouts......................85.225

Looking at the recaps I'm amazed Phantom was actually able to pull out on top considering their low marching, color guard and GE scores, but I'm glad they did. This is the only time I recall BD taking the visual caption and not taking the majority of the brass or percussion captions. (Musically BD came in 4th overall, while Phantom and Carolina Crown took the top 2 spots. Wow.) :woohoo:

AAAAHHHH!!! WWWOWOOOOOO!!!! Blue Stars hold 8th and Phantom takes down BD and Cavies to take the gold! What an amazing ending. After watching semi-finals last night and seeing all the top 12 corps for the first time, I am extremely pleased that Phantom won! I thought their ending was just phenomenal!

And of course, I have to give props to my corps. First time in Finals since 1979 and they came in with a BANG! FCO Blue Stars!
darnit now I'm gonna cry

I was so happy to see Blue Stars in Finals. When did you march? They won Division 3 the year I marched corps.

What an evening!

I can only say that watching Phantoms encore performance was an experience of a lifetime!

Not a dry eye in the house as they played Elsa's Procession!

Good Night!

And the world just seemed right at that moment!

CONGRATS PHANTOM!!!!!

Blue Stars...The only thing better would have been to hear they pulled out the buckles and chrome tops for awards.

Madison...welcome back to where you belong. The climb continues.

Wish I could have been there for what had to have been one of the most incredible results announcements EVER!

How do they top this in 2009!?

And they did! The American Flag and the side arm both had on vintage Blue Star uniforms! Who thought hot pants would ever look so good in 2008?

Speaking of American Flags.....

Madison.....Blue Knights........Hmmmmm.....forget something at home?:confused3

Ladies and gentlemen........the Finals scores for the 2008 season.........

2. Blue Devils.............................98.100
3. Cavaliers................................97.325
4. Carolina Crown........................96.800
5. Cadets...................................94.750
6. Bluecoats...............................93.175
7. Santa Clara Vanguard...............93.025
8. Blue Stars..............................90.425
9. Blue Knights...........................88.250
10. Boston Crusaders...................87.275
11. Glassmen.............................87.200

Looking at the recaps I'm amazed Phantom was actually able to pull out on top considering their low marching, color guard and GE scores, but I'm glad they did. This is the only time I recall BD taking the visual caption and not taking the majority of the brass or percussion captions. OK...so my kids now think I am totally crazy...I'm reading the posted scores and screaming at the top of my lungs. THAT IS FAN-DANG-TASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy Cow, I can't believe they did it...I mean I think we all agree that they deserved it, but actually pulling it out is amazing! GO PHANTOM!!!
I only wish I could have seen Elsa's...as an oboe player that is 1 of my FAVORITE pieces of music ever. Oooh, I get chills just thinking about Wagner!

I marched 2004, the year after they won:cool1:

I read in the paper that they had a helmet and red plume on the drum major podium. It's good to hear they did the vintage retreat thing. They did that last year at the home show.

Wow, I didn't follow it at all this year, moving and house selling and all got in the way. Pleased to see Cadets down where they were. Last years show pissed me off. Shut up and march.

I really would love to see the Encore, we played Elsa's Procession in High School band. A beautiful piece of music. Utube? Bueller? Anyone?

Thank you thank you thank you.

What happened to the Crudsaders and Nashua Spartans? Crusaders took 1st last year in their division and Spartans seemed to have a good show too.

Maybe the stadium will be done for next year, gas will be cheaper and I will be able to see more of it.

Still gives me chills in my old age.

Crusaders were good, just an off year, and a pretty boring show.

Spartans....Now there is some drama!

This is what I have been told.

The director kind of lost it, threw a major fit, and the entire staff left and went to the Citations. Citations ended up comming in 6th in Open Class.

We just rolled in a few hours ago from Indy and I still don't have my voice back after all the screaming and yelling from last night!!

I had excellent seats (thanks to a friend who is a "friend of DCI) right on the 48 yard line in row 56. Next to us all 3 nights was a mom and dad of one of the "Slaves" in the guard of Phantom. If you heard "GO LAUREN" at the encore performance, that was us!!!

We stayed at the Embassy Suites downtown and it was a very good experience. We enjoyed a good meals (weber's was excellent) and enjoyed the downtown area. We attended the Friends of DCI breakfast on Saturday and not only got treated to the TROOPERS! WAAAAY cool, but we also got a FREE MUG!.

Our group also attended I & E on Wednesday and got to meet and chat with the DMs of SCV at Starbucks! My 15 yr old niece was so excited to have them speak to her. What a cool experience for her!

It was the BEST finals I have attended (been going every year since 2000, so I am a newbie). Phantom is totally amazing and I gave kuddos and congrats to a member this morning at breakfast.

I am so thrilled with the outcome and I wouldn't have missed it for anything.

Now DCI withdrawal sets in............................

Now if we can just get Cadets on board! :lmao:

OMG, Drama in Drum Corps? Say it isn't so!!!!

Ohhh, a Disney Both and meet up, sounds like a plan. My big vacvation will be in september to november time frame, so August in Indy sounds very doable.

Pinny, your week sounded totally awesome.

A meet at the Disney booth works for me!!!! We are already planning on heading down to Indy on either Monday or Tuesday and will stay until Sunday, taking in all 3 nights. Other tentative plans include Murfreesboro, Toledo, and maybe either San Antonio or Denver. (Being a teacher with the summer "off" really is ideal for my DCI addiction).

The only thing I could reltate to in The Cadets show this year was Sarah Jones' reference to a granddaughter. I am going to be a grandmom sometime in September to a little girl. But trust me, I am NOT SARAH!

Sara only became a Grandmother when the "cancer" thing became a downer for the crowd. I cant imagine as a 19 year old marching with the Cadets, how do I relate to a grown woman who is about to become a Grandmother?

If they wanted to narrate a show, it should have been about a kid who auditioned for the Cadets, and how the summer went.

Then again, perhaps they could have just marched and played! :rolleyes1

Lets see, the winning corps told the story of Sparticus, multiple murders, a love interest, and NO AMPLIFIED VOICE! The only spoken word was "I am Sparticus". And it worked for everyone!

I squeezed in two days at Cedar Point, adding the Toledo show, and had a blast! If you like amusement parks, it's something to think about!

I was at the first Toledo show when they introduced the "cancer" thing and hated it! Also, was it in Orlando that they had the little granddaughter run out at the end of the show. I remember seeing it somewhere! Did you notice there was no mention of the baby's daddy? When Sarah looked into the baby's eyes, she saw herself, her husband (Glad they are now back together...talk about a soap opera!) and her daughter...there was no mention of the daddy. Was it an immaculate conception?

That's exactly what I was thinking too.

Maybe the grandmother aspect of the show was symbolism hinting at Hoppy's career with the corps. :confused3

Sorry.....that was a little mean. :lmao:

I think the Cadets should make fun of themselves. Their next show...

This I believe...shut up and play

and they do exactly that but make fun of themselves in the name. :lmao:
