There's an assortment of "wild" house cats that live near and visit the outside dining patio area of Capt. Cook's CS restaurant at the Poly.

They come cautiously out from under the low plants to see what guests may be having for snacks.

I didn't get any photos of them, but there are several different colors of cats who frequent the area.

We have seen several bunny rabbits in parking lots and on paths.... We have seen at three dozen geckos along path ways at various resorts. My kids have so much looking for geckos.

That bunny pic looks strikingly similar to the bunny we saw at WL. DH took a pic but I am too lazy to post it.
We saw a deer at the entrance to WL when we were in a cab on the way to GF - didn't get a pic of it, though.

I don't have a picture (darn it), but while we were at CSR a couple of trips ago, we saw a crocodile (or an alligator...pardon my cluelessness... ) crawling out of the lake while two janitor CMs stood nearby watching it nervously. :scared1: Needless to say, we hauled it to the buses.

Leaving the Contemporary last week, we came upon three turkeys crossing the road right in front of the Eagle Pines & Osprey Ridge Golf Club. It was such a strange sight, I just had to stop the car and take pictures.

I would love to post the picture, but I can't figure it out how to do it! It's the turkeys crossing the road right in front of the Golf Club sign.

Thanks for any help!

My dh and I were at WDW June 1-6 2007 and the first night we were there, it was the beginning of tropical storm Barry, it was pouring for the first two days and there were the tiniest little frogs I have ever seen, I took a picture with my cell phone but I don't know how to get it on to here, they were so cute and so little, I tried to catch one and take it home to show my kids but I couldn't find them once it stopped raining.

We have always seen little rabbits in Epcot, over by Mission Space, in the little gardens they have in the pathways, and in Magic Kingdom. Once we were leaving Mk for the day and walking up the path to where you load the resort buses and a squirrel shot out from the grassy area and ran across my foot, it like to have scared the crap out of me. Not to mention having our plates dive bombed by birds in Frontierland.

I heard about him. He was put down after guests noticed him and started feeding him. This, in turn, made him more aggressive and less shy.

That day a CM had security come and talk to a few guest that were throwing him Turkey legs. He was of nice size and Thought they would have just relocated but if he was use to having his food brought to him he would find his way back.

We have seen a few over by WWoS as well whe we would play Paintball and one was at BCV in the canal last trip but I didn't have the camera with me that day.

It's sad the people caused him an early dimise if that was the case.

And we liked having the Anoles around so much DD had a few of them for several years here at the House. I just couldn't find any Photos .

I think if they (the feral cats) were a problem, it wouldn't be too difficult to have them caught and removed.

I'm thinking (hoping) they are just sort of considered more "wildlife" at the Poly.

Its interesting to note that at Disneyland, very early on, the Castle was just a shell.
Inside the "shell," over time, many feral cats moved right in.

Mr. Disney (Walt was still very much involved with the park) finally decided to build a "token attraction" (walk-thru) inside the castle (so many guests wanted to go inside,) so they had to capture all of those cats and get them out of the park.

Walt (as the story goes) made sure the cats (the first residents of a Disney Castle) were not harmed.

When we stayed at ASMO in 2001 there were snails everywhere! We really had to watch where we walked cause they were all over the pathways. When other people who weren't as careful would walk by you could hear crunching! Yuck.

I don't have any pictures but we also saw a turtle in the river a POR. I've also seen Armadillo along the side of the road on the way to FW and also a family of raccoons crossing the street one morning. We have also seen so many deer along the side of the roadways in WDW that we are sure that Disney plants them there as decor! Just have a look under the monorail lines in the morning and at dusk.

I haven't ever done it, (but want to on this thread! I'm going to go try soon too) but you first need to host your pictures on a free site like photobucket. When they are on a website, then you can link that here, and that's what shows up. the first couple times we went to WDW in 2003 & 2004 we saw hundreds of armadillos...they were on the sides of the roads and at the resort... we were coming back from one of the parks one night in Jan 04 and walking from the bus stop to the room at CSR my daughter almost stepped on one in the parking lot... it scared her half to death...
the last several times we have been there we haven't seen any:confused3
we thought they were cool, but I read on another thread a while back that Disney somehow got rid of them because they were a problem:confused3 not quite sure what that means

On our 1st trip to Disney we stayed @ Fort Wilderness in one of the cabins. When we arrived we started to unpack and told our 5 year old to go play outside next to the picnic table while we unpacked, so he went outside but minutes later came in screaming that there was a little pig just outside of our cabin. We told him to not make up stories like that and it was probably just someones cat and to go back outside. He came in again and yelled it was a "little pig" so I went outside to find a fairly large Armadillo looking for insects just outside of our cabin!! WE had never seen one of these in the wild ( were from Massachusetts ) so it was quite interesting to watch.

It's a harmless "Yellow Garden spider" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_garden_spider )

It may be "harmless" but I sure wouldn't want to run into it!

Great thread!

We have two of those *huge* spiders on our back door to my office. My boys at work told me they're banana spiders and won't ever hurt you but I now use the front door to come and go! :)

We see a lot of these things around our new home here in SC. We actually have an alligator that lives in our lagoon seriously in our backyard. Last week we watched (and listened unfortunately) to him having a turtle for dinner.

I'll have to find the pictures and post them. I don't know what I specifically have from Disney. I'm fine so long as I don't see a snake :scared1:  :scared1:

I don't have photos of either of these but from my August 06 trip, there was a pair of slugs that crawled (slimed?) their way onto my sister's rear end while we were waiting for Illuminations at Epcot (Never sit on a planter/bench after a rainfall) and earlier that evening I saw the TINIEST frog ever (small as my pinky fingernail) over in China - I assisted him to safety and like to imagine he was safe from harm [please do not spoil my fantasy].

Sorry for the small image size but you can see them ok.

I'm a huge animal lover so in feb, on our last day of the trip, while we were at MK waiting to ride POTC and JK, we saw these baby ducks with their mama. It was so cute, she had her own CM escort. He told kids nearby not to touch and made sure people saw them since they were walking along all the paths. They were adorable!

Sorry I don't have pictures but I have seen wild snakes on two different occasions. The first time was at the Animal Kingdom walking from Africa towards Pizzafari. A ~3 foot snake slithered across the path in front of me and went into the bushes. I thought a custodian CM saw it and was going after it but apparently she was looking at something else. I was a bit surprised but no one else seemed to notice.

The other snake was at Typhoon Lagoon on the path/line to Slush n' Gusher. He was hanging out by a tree in the bushes. My daughter actually spotted him first and pointed it out to me as she ran by.

We also saw a baby gator in the water by the bridge on Tom Sawyer Island. I did get pics but don't have them at work.

I get yelled at by the DW and children that I take far too many of these animal pictures. Besides what you see below, I have taken pictures of deer along the monorail line, turkeys, and armadillos. I wish I could find them.

We saw these ducks in many pools at the Poly last December. I snapped this one before a guest or lifeguard chased him away.

We have spotted lot's of armadillos and deer while driving to and from Magic Kingdom. Bunnies at several of the resorts.

But nothing compares to the SCARY FROG!!! Yep, I am scared of frogs!! I am at the pool at the ASMU when nature calls. I head into the bathroom by the pool. Do my business and start to leave. You have to go down a narrow hall way to get out and there sits the FROG!! Smack dab in the middle of the hall. Oh crap. I am not about to try and go around him or step over him because he will jump/hop/leap and I will die.

So I stand there. I wait. I wait some more. He doesn't budge. Finally a little girl (age 7-8) comes in and I kindly ask her if she will move the frog outside. Thank goodness for that little girl because I would have been there all night!

While in Animal Kingdom in July we got to talk to one of the CM's that runs part of the animals and tours. He told us there are many gators at disney. The CM's are all aware of where they like to hang out and are on the look-out and take care of it a.s.a.p They incourage them back into the water, but are aware of where they are most of the time.

Last year, my wife and I followed a skunk down the sidewalk and hallway of Coronado Springs. He was very cute as he waddled along. Obviously, we didn't follow him closely and wouldn't have followed him, at all, but he was going our way as we brought the luggage to the room.

Sadly, the camera was already in the room.

Love the snake!! A red rat snake if I'm not mistaken.
I would love to see a snake, hopefully on the next trip..

I've seen a vulture feasting on roadkill at OKW.
Loads of frogs in the stairwell at SSR and a couple on the trees outside.
A huge moth - 6 inches across - in the outside hallway at SSR.
Squirrels, Ducks, Egrets, and other birds.
Bunnies at the BW, PO and OKW.
Anoles.
Soft shell turtles.
A pretty large gopher tortoise near the approach road to Epcot -saw it from the bus.
Lots of deer from the Monorail, between MK and Epcot and also grazing on the golf course near the GF.
A small gator eating a fish on one of the golf courses.

Todd&Copper (post #79), there is nothing on this thread that made me feel like this :scared: except your story of the slugs on your sister's pants! I will ALWAYS remember to NEVER sit on a planter/bench after a rain again!
I know they are harmless but the whole slime thing makes me feel  .
As far as saving the little frogs and hoping for the best I am the exact same way. I pick up tiny snails off of the sidewalk, birds, spiders, anything that i feel is in harms way and try to put them somewhere safe. Then I always wonder if I made things worse for them! I live in New York so finding a safe place for them is not always easy. Anyway, have a great day!:)

Also known as a Corn Snake. They not only eat the nasty little critters but they are a very popular pet. They're harmless unless you're a mouse or rat. Maybe that's why Mickey's always got escorts.

When we were at the Haunted Mansion (2006) waiting to go in my daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons were looking around and saw a cat hunting in the woods right beside us. He was real still waiting for the right moment to strike. When a lady behind us said "look at that cat they made him look so real". Something must of spooked him because he ran off. There are something like 30-35 different species of roach in FL (including wild hissing roaches like on Fear Factor). The ones everyone talks about though are the Palmetto bugs.

I always thought they looked like those spikey things from the origional Super Mario Bros. game. I used to catch them all the time, they don't bite (at least they never bit me lol).

You're close. They're Spiny Orb Weavers. Believe it or not, they're related to that other spider photo from way back - the one everyone calls 'banana spiders' (they're actual name is Golden Orb Weaver).

Orb Weavers generally don't bite - though the goldens can if threatened. The spinys rarely have ever bitten anyone - you can easily handle them.

They are both known for very elaborate webs, as strong as soccer nets!

I'm very familiar with both of them, as there are dozens around my yard and neighborhood - they are both quite common here in Florida.

Thanks for the help. I love looking at these guys but they do give me the willies. It's good to know that the spiny ones won't make me pay for an unintentional chance encounter.

Lots of snails out at POP during our last trip, courtesy of Tropical Storm Fay! Also saw a HUGE beetle, maybe 3" long, like you see in the tropical rainforest books. Two years ago there was a lizard (not the anoles or geckos you see everywhere) perched on the top of the doorframe to our studio at OKW; he was some kind of chameleon, as he was the same light minty-green as the stucco! He didn't bother me, but I DIDN"T like walking under him all the time. We've also seen a gator and armadillos and all the usual birds. Fortunately no spiders or snakes!!! My DD, who was about 10 at the time, bent over to check out a lizard on the steps to BWI one evening (coming from the Boardwalk to go inside). Unfortunately it was a HUGE roach, and she just about passed out! She had her nose about 5" from it before she realized what it was! She had to lay down on the couch inside the lobby for about 20 mins before her color came back and we could make it out to the car.

Aardvarks? Or Armadillos? The Armadillos are everywhere but I think the Aardvark is native to Africa.

I'm not an expert on Florida snakes, but, as others have said, this snake might be a red rat snake.

http://www.floridabackyardsnakes.com/files/Redratfinal.jpg

It also could be a mole kingsnake.

http://www.floridabackyardsnakes.com/images/MoleKingsnakeEdited.jpg

But, if I saw something like it, I'd be worried that it was a copperhead. This one is venomous.

Relatively few snakes in Florida will cause you a problem. But, you never know. I'd just keep my distance from all of them.

I don't have a picture but when we stayed in 1996 (for my 11th birthday) at the Disney Institute my dad was downstairs watching the news and having his morning coffee when he heard a tapping sound like someone knocking on the patio door. He looked out and tapping his beak against the door was the massive bird. He was tall...I think some sort of crane? Anyway my dad kept the door shut and was trying to scare him away but the crane just stood there tapping away. So finally dad opened the door to scare him and the crane flapped his wings and walked right into the villa like he owned the place! We think the people who had been staying there before us had fed him every morning of their stay and he got used to the special treatment!
He was very friendly though and would have let me pet him if my mom had!
When he realized we weren't going to feed him (much to my disappointment) he walked right back out and went about his business. But he did come back every morning of our stay and tapped on the window at the same time!! That was the only time he actually came in though.

It was probably a Sand Hill Crane. They are about 4' tall and not afraid of anything (including cars as they back up traffic).

I've seen that photo. And yes, that is the Men's Restroom located in the Adventureland / Liberty Square breezeway.

It was taken earlier this year (May or so, IIRC) at around 3:30am by a member of the third shift custodial team. Needless to say, the 'gator was removed shortly after the photo was taken.

Had to post to say thanks to all for the pics. We're from over in Scotland. The only real wildlife we see is the common or garden 'midge' and some occasional drunk Scotsmen on the roam home from the pub! :rotfl2:

Ever since I booked our first WDW trip next September its been in the back of my mind what weird and wonderful things we might come across. I should point out that I HATE spiders especially weird big funny-coloured ones with big spindly legs and although I don't mind snakes from a distance and behind glass or tamed wee ones, I'd definitely have a problem with a big one loose near me or my little one. Looks like my DH will be bed-checking on a regular basis! Totally gobsmacked at the story of the snake in the room with the nest! and as for the croc round the loo... WOW! Showed it to my DH and explained the story... he looked a little

Do you mean palmetto bugs? They're just cockroaches - I saw one when I was there last week under a water fountain in DHS. I didn't see any in the rooms. They're ugly, but harmless.

Here's a wild turkey doing his best giraffe impersonation on the Savannah outside my balcony at AKL the other week.

They're just BIG cockroaches...and they fly too...which makes them a little less fun than good 'ol NY cockroaches (German cockroach).

As for how common they are down here...I'd say somewhere between 'common as dirt' and 'common as water'. They're common!

I live in canada and we don't hang out with gators except in the ZOO!!!! I gues the unkown is scary BUT THEY ARE GATORS!!!!!! I can't believe more people are worried about corn snakes and harmless spiders ( can't say i like them either) then the man eating gators. Are they not a concern?? Won't they come out of the water and travel the paths? What keeps them from snacking on children? I have to say we stayed at okw in feb and I had no idea that there were gators in WDW.

Now I am scared to book treehouse villas with little kids. The only thing that freaks me out are sharks. I have never seen a shark walking around disney but someone tell me more about the gators.:scared1::scared::scared1: did i mention i am scared

WDW will remove any gators that get big enough to be a threat. But you can't remove them all. Where ever you find fresh water in Florida, especially this far south, there will be gators. They're a really important part of the food chain and as long as you keep your distance from the big guys, you're all set.

People are not so much afraid of the corn snakes as they are of the venomous coral snakes which look very similar. Remember - "If red touches yellow, kill a fellow, if red touches black, friend of jack (or venom lack)" As for the spiders, there are some nasty looking ones down there and I'm afraid of all of em.

Though they look scary, and they have on rare occasion bitten and even killed people, alligators are generally very non-aggressive and are much more inclined to run away from people before they're even spotted. They do not attack people naturally...most attacks that have occurred have been one of three scenarios: 1. People being stupid, 2. Alligators in drought conditions starving and desperate, 3. Alligators defending nests.

The people being stupid category is most common. Sitting on the bank of a canal, completely still for 30-40 minutes, not paying attention to the water where a very large alligator is sitting. Jumping in alligator infested waters while drunk on a dare with friends. Standing waste deep in murky alligator infested water trimming marsh plants for hours. (All three of those, BTW, resulted in the last 3 alligator deaths in Florida).

I have lived around alligators most of my life, and find them to be some of the least aggressive animals I know. I've never seen one jump up onto a walking path and randomly attack a person (only one time have I ever heard of such a thing, where one did jump up after a dog being walked by a man...and that was during a drought when the alligators were known to be getting desperate...even then, it was the dog being attacked). I've watched alligators submerge and pop up 30 feet farther away when people walk too close. Respect, as with any large animal, is required...it CAN hurt you, even if it doesn't necessarily want to...so don't push your luck. Stay away from the shoreline when you see an alligator, keep a healthy respect for the larger ones that could pull you in if they wanted to, and listen to warning signs to know if you are approaching a nest (they will hiss, and sometimes snap their jaws...and make very noticeable movement in your direction if you're walking towards something they are protecting).

You are likely in more peril dealing with bears, mating elk/caribou, moose, or large male deer, all of which can be distinctly more aggressive and more willing to attack, and capable of inflicting serious damage on you! Plus, they don't generally live in water, and only occasionally come up on land like gators...they're on land all the time, right where you are! :)

Really, don't worry about gators, especially at Disney. They are not aggressive animals, and Disney is always monitoring for larger ones to be removed before they become capable of any real harm. If Disney says 'don't swim', then don't! Otherwise, enjoy the awesome beauty and power of a real-life dinosaur that has survived millions of years!

Here's a picture of an alligator we saw in Frontierland a few years ago---I wonder if it's the same one another poster saw behind the turkey leg stand?? We were on the bridge behind the turkey leg stand. It was around 2004 I think.

What a great thread!!! And I am very happy to see cool heads prevailing here. To me, the difference between a non-venomous and venomous snake is easy to spot. Their heads and eyes are shaped much differently. Altho most people, don't give them that much of a look. I was dismayed to hear people feed the gators. That is so bad for the gators, you're just endangering them, not doing them any favors. People just don't think.

While possums are some of my favorite animals, I can always tell when I am back in the South. You start seeing dead armadillos on the side of the road. The poor things are just about blind. When I lived in FL, two came almost right up to me b/c they never even saw me. We also had those amazing spiders! Even if you're not scared of spiders, so to speak, those banana ones can get HUGE and will give even the stoutest heart pause, :lmao:!

We're staying at SoG on the ground floor and I hear they have some friendly turkeys. I hope we come across them and just about everything else on here. 'Cept the roaches. (Palmetto bugs always sounded to me like trying to put a nice name on something not nice, lol.)

We went to cbr in september and after readingthis thread I was a bit freaked out....checking room for snakes etc. On our last day there we were walking on the path were it goes under the bridge with our two little ones is strollers and my husband points in the garden along the path way there was a monster of a black snake coiled up and it was thick like really thick. We assumed it was a water mocasin from looking at pics before we went. We also saw lots of tiny lizard creatures.

On day two of the same trip the clear cut the gardens in front of our room. took down all the trees and everything. My husband was outside and the gardeners said you the snake guy? Dh said NO and gut outta there quick lol.

We went to OKW two weeks ago and I was habby to report NO CREATURES :worship:

I haven't posted in here in well over a year, so I guess I can add a few too!

I am a wildlife and bird photographer back home, so I'm always looking for opportunities while at Disney as well. Of course, Animal Kingdom presents great opportunities with the actual exhibit animals, but around Disney, as with much of Florida, there are always a few tropical animals around the grounds.

Here's a great egret sitting in the reflecting pool in front of the China Pavilion:

A great blue heron hanging out on the lake at Downtown Disney:

The cockroaches are gross but the bug we saw at SSR in 2008 was :scared1: It looked like a moth but it was huge(4-5in wing span) and it had a lot of fur on it? It didn't move for 3 days, I think we took a picture of it I'll try to find it.

As for all the other animals we saw almost all of them in one round of golf on the Palms course. We saw gators(one was following a guy getting golfballs out of a pond:scared1:), turtles, snakes, deer, armadillo's, turkey's, racoons(they tried to drive our golf cart another trip:lmao: and stole my cookies:sad:), cranes, ducks, hawks and lizards yes in one round of golf it was our national geographic round :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Obviously, that was a golfer who doesn't live where gators frequent where he golfs. We do, and DH knows never to bother with a ball that's gone in the water. That's gator/golf rule #1.

Has Anyone seen the duck at epcot near the Canada pavilion? He has a broken wing and cannot fly. The first time we saw him, we let a cast member know so the duck could get help. Well 2 days later, he was still there. We then complained to another cast member and she said that there was nothing they could do and he was fine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Disney rehabilitates animals found on Disney property. At rafikis planet watch, they show an X-ray of a snake that ate a golf ball. Does anyone know anything about the duck?
Thanks

I'll be there in 2 more days, and I'll keep an eye out for him - I love the ducks around the food stand there and usually stop to watch them for a while, so I'll look for any injured ones.

Disney does when possible try to help an injured animal on property, within reasonable limits - because they are wild, they're not always easy to catch and they won't go to extraordinary measures that could risk injury to CMs - and it might not go over well to pull out a tranq gun and shoot a duck with guests around either. Most likely, they'll look for an easy opportunity to grab the duck if he comes under the fence to beg for food, and if there are no guests around.

I had a peacock cut his foot pretty bad on my golf cart at Fort Wilderness Campground years ago...when we boarded the MK boat, the peacock was busy fighting with my cart (the males in mating season can get a little nutty, and fight any reflections they find...small metal number badges and rear view mirrors offer a few males to challenge). When we got back, the cart was covered in blood (not an exxageration...it was like Carrie at the prom) and we flagged down security...we fairly well knew it was the peacock, and were able to follow a fairly obvious blood trail back to where the bird was. It took them some time to corral the big bird...and he wasn't going without a fight either - the Wilderness personnel were helping to corral the bird towards one of the animal tenders from the petting zoo, where they finally convinced the bird to move into one of the goat pens and managed to get a big horse blanket over it. And that was probably a fairly dangerous capture as those things can cut you pretty good...but they had animal personnel there which helped. Though a duck won't cause much harm, they will run pretty quickly and lunge for the water if they can't fly, so not always easy to get your hands on them!

Don't have the pics with me I will post from home but we saw a flock of wild turkeys grazing in a clearing in the woods on the road from Ft Wilderness toward Golden Oak back in November on Thanksgiving weekend.

We also have a picture of a real deer from the Liberty Belle near the spot on the shore where they have a fake deer probably about 4 feet from the fake deer. Some kid kept going mama look its a deer and she was like yeah honey I know but he kept saying but no mama IT IS A DEER. Another adult (not w/ the mother/child) finally looked and said well it is a real deer. This was on 10/1.
