Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!
New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Hey everyone!
Update on the Miles/Minutes Game: team challenge threads will be linked in the opening post of the weekly threads so you can easily find your team for posting your hours. If your team's link is incorrect, please let me know!
I have felt like a total slacker since the full. I leisurely got up at 7:30, didn't get around to running until about 8:30. No more of those up by 5:00 am, out the door by 5:30am and by the time I get back and cleaned up, it's lunchtime and half the day's over. I kinda miss it...but I kinda don't. Anyway, 4 miles this morning in an even 48 min.
Steve and Krista...congratulations! That is too exciting!!
Bill...great job getting out there! Sleet would've been a deal breaker for me. Umm...actually, one reason I didn't go right away when I got up this morning is because I was waiting for it to warm up a bit (it was 50 degrees :rolleyes1 )
Stephanie...that must have been a really tough decision, but I think it's the right one. You've mentioned several times you wanted to take it easy this year.
AmyBeth...your XT expertise is very helpful! That's something I really want to focus on getting right for this training year. BTW, I think the website/webclass idea is brilliant for the same reasons Stephanie mentioned. Classes I want here at the Y are either during my work day or on evenings that are my running days. I can't really flex my running days because DH runs the days I don't and I dont want to mess up his schedule. A webclass would be really cool!
Debra...:wizard: for your cold.
Jen...welcome back! Ummm...brrrrr! I'm hoping to go back to Chicago again and stay where we did for CDC. Such a neat city and area! We missed so much!
Cam...we've missed you! Good luck with your case and congrats to Jenn on starting her training!
Heather...thanks for posting all the great photos!
Craig...your running partner sounds way cool!
Martha...how's the throat doing? Hope you're feeling better!
We have discovered several (8 or so) WISHers will be aging up into the Master's category (aka turning 40) this year. Anne, I think we'll need one of those Mickey cakes!
Good training everyone!

Hi everyone! I helped DS (Andrew) with a Scout Merit Badge project today. It was for the Hiking Merit Badge. He had to hike 20 miles(!) to finish it up. I walked 19 of the 20 and he finished up while I returned home to get ready for an appointment and dinner with friends. This accomplishment will allow Andrew to achieve Life Rank in Scouts. :woohoo:
So, my training for the day: 19 miles walking at a brisk pace.
I am proud of my son for finishing it with no training or preparation. He is feeling it (for sure) and appreciates what his Mom (Cam) does SO much more. ;)

Helpful Panda's training tip of the week for the tripple Ds and the rabbits:
Increasing performance is not rocket science it's a matter of proper fuel. Your body burns the food you eat for energy so you need to consume things that burn easily. When you do your marketing think "what burns easily". So fill your cart with combustables: Shredded Wheat, Vodka and marshmellows are the staples of a good performance diet.
Don't forget plenty of water for post race cool down and the deep fryer for relaxing with some good cheese fries.

I am proud of my son for finishing it with no training or preparation. He is feeling it (for sure) and appreciates what his Mom (Cam) does SO much more. ;)Howard - Appreciates his what his mother does but trains like his father! Nice job for the both of you. Also, congrats to Cam for landing a big case! Oh, and also to Jenn for starting off strong.
:rotfl2:
Fear not! Chad is now the proud owner of a new pair of Brooks Adrenaline shoes!
They are yellow though - not the best color. Like it matters though!
Kristi - Those are the exact shoes I have:laughing: . I was going to send Chad some red ones but could be persuaded to part with my older pair of yellow ones (only about 5 months old now). I'll be due for a new pair in April. I'm betting on green by then.
Mel - I'm thinking you need to sign up for another full since you are missing the all morning long runs!
WWDave - Vodka in the shredded wheat! Don't I feel like the fool. I've been doing gin all this time. Doh!
Amy - I asked DW if she wanted to take a pilates class together the other day on the way to the gym. She graciously declined because she didn't think she could stand the humiliation:confused3 . I then politely asked what exactly was pilates (I know it's good for the core:thumbsup2 but that's about all I know). She called me an idiot and refused to speak to me for the rest of the car ride.
Oh, and I did get a 14 mile run in on Saturday morning.
See ya!

Mike: :lmao: I think you SHOULD try pilates class. My DH does water aerobics and is the only man there. He says he goes for the "floatation devices".
Panda: :lmao: I hope your team follows your great advice. Although weaving while walking would increase your miles. I ended up running 13.3 during the half due to weaving!!!
Here is my challenge to the Super Goof team. This month, I want you all to work on that one thing you have always wanted to add to your routine. For me, it is stretching before and after and even on my off days. I am adding in some yoga just to help my older muscles out a little bit. If you don't cross train, try adding some in. If you don't weight train, try that. I highly recommend the weight training. It has made a huge difference for me. Even if it is something as simple as adding more fruits or water to your diet. This month, I want everyone to try something new!!!!
Oh and KEEP MOVING PEOPLE!!!!!!! :yay:

I know one thing, the miles challenge does have me being more active. I'm always looking for ways to get more miles in, and have been doing 4 instead of 3 on the TM! YAH for the miles game!
Lisa, I'm still thinking about what new thing to add this month, thanks for the challenge!
Mel, thanks for doing the shirt order. I can't wait to get them.
Howard- 19 miles without training, your son did great!

Let me see. I am no Iron Chef, but I'm guessing I soak the shredded wheat in vodka, ignite it and toast the marshmallows. Sound like great fun. I'll have to try it with the kids at tonights Super Bowl party while ...

Good morning WISH warriors.
I hope everyone is getting over their flu bugs and their aches and pains from the marathon. I going to try to walk a bit today.
Lisa, I have a wonderful new technology for your team to try. Electric stimulation has showned to be an awesome way to build muscle, better than steroids. I haven't figured out yet where you stick the batteries but I'll get back to y'all on that. But go ahead and experiment if you want to and you will be a step ahead of the game.:teacher:
Stacey I'm glad to hear you are getting more steps in.:cheer2:
Mike, Gin just doesn't have a high enough octane level. Beer is good for a long slow burn. It's just hard to light.

Howard – Congrats to DS for earning his Hiking Merit Badge, and to you for helping him.
Cam - Good luck with the case.
Mel – WTG with the 4 miler!

Bill: Good luck to the Pats....I am hoping for an exciting game. And obviously for a different outcome than you. But it's all good..i can't even believe my boys are in the super bowl! :goodvibes
Lisa: :thumbsup2 Good challenge. I've challenged myself to try something new too. I'm actually planning on trying Spinning class. For some reason it terrifies me LOL! I can run 39.3 miles in a weekend but for some reason I think that Spin class will kick my butt!!! :headache:
Howard: WOW! Your son did 20 miles?? That's incredible!!! :thumbsup2
Mike: Tell Kathy she won't be humiliated! Everyone is scared of pilates but it's really not that bad. I promise.
OK...I have to admit...my body is aching and NOT from running. Wish I could say I got a bunch of miles in this past week but I didn't. What I did do was something like 10 hours of XT on the ski machine and pilates/yoga classes. Next week I need to balance that with some actual miles ;). With that said...I'm off to get a brief run in this am before i head out for a day of activities. Hope everyone enjoys the big game!!!

Vic - Now wait a minute!!! The guys on the Triple D's might be shopping @ Fredricks but I am definately a Victoria's Secret girl!! ;)
I managed to mostly walk 2 miles (there was very little running going on) this morning. My calves tightened up and I didn't want to hurt my shins so figured I would take it easy and walk. If my neice is feeling better and comes over for the Superbowl later we will go out for probably a mile since she wants to do the Minnie 5k with me.
Since I joined the local running club on Friday I might meet them on Wednesday evening for a run/walk although I am kinda scared that they will all be faster than me.
Everyone enjoy their Sunday and enjoy the Superbowl :happytv:

Morning WISH Team!
Howard you are amazing putting in those steps with Andy. I know he will have newfound respect for the miles. Congratulations to him on his Life Scout achievement. Congratulations to Jenn for getting in her first 5k. I do WISH that she is making progress as slow and steady so as to not face injury on her first try. Dad, you might need to lead by example for her here. :teeth:
Polar Bear family time for Special Olympics in your future? Brrr if so.
DH and I are getting dressed to go out and put in some steps. He's going with me!
To answer the question about XT. I try to always include Pilates or some way to core strengthen along with other non-impact exercises/strength training.
Off we go. Putting in steps so I can report something before surgery day.

Hello!:wave2:
Can I join in?
I think I am going to do the WDW Half this year so I better get my body moving! (I am going to do it if we get our act in gear and make some decisions and register... LOL!)
I know I am doing the Peachtree 10K in July. And just to give everyone a :rotfl2: I am doing a 10K the end of Febuary......I am SO NOT READY, but I need a time. I found out last year that if you submit ANY time to the Peachtree folks you can get in group 2 or 3. I was in four last year which was fine, but I don't think I can do this race from 9. You don't start until it's hotter then the surface of the sun back there! So my goal for the race in Feb... not to finish dead last. (Which may not be possible!)
This morning I hit the local path I like. It's 3.4 miles and I did it in 50 minutes doing a combo jog/walk. I seem to have lost my pedometer so I didn't really have a way to figure out what I was doing jogging vs walking but I think I jogged more then walked. Fighthing a cold so I was very pleased with my time.
Now I have questions on gear! 1. What do you use to track time/miles? I do a lot of stuff on the Treadmill so that's fine but I guess if I am going to do a half I have to get longer runs...2. What do you use to carry water. My 3.4 is about as long as I can go without water!!!
I am VERY impressed with all the posters on here. :worship:
Hopefully you will keep me motivated for next 11 months!
Thanks!

Hi team!
I got in 9.44 miles yesterday in JUST under 1:30 (1:29:57 to be exact). It felt pretty good; I've got to get back into it if I'm really doing this half in the beginning of April. The weather was beautiful and it was a great day to run outside - 60 and sunny.
Tonight I'll do some carb loading at a Superbowl party and take out my newbie buddies again tomorrow. It's really fun re-living the start of fitness with other people and it helps me to appreciate how far I've come.
Carol - Welcome! I use a Nike watch for my time (with chrono and interval timer; Timex Ironman 50 lap has the same features). If you're run/walking you probably want to get a watch with an interval timer which will help you to do regular intervals of running/walking. To measure distance I use www.gmap-pedometer.com and have several routes whose distance I use. I don't carry water with me; I plant it along my route.
Happy training, all!

:welcome: Carol,
I use a Garmin 305. I live in the middle of nowhere, but I often take different routes that lead away from it. The Garmin allows me to download my info, keeps my heart rate, distance, time last lap, currnet lap, time of day, etc. Works anywhere because it uses GPS Technology.
To hydrate I use a camelbak for really long walks and a Ultimate direction fanny for shorter walks. They both allow me to take other items like a cell phone, a throw away rain poncho, an emergency blanket, sunscreen, keys, tear gas, with me etc. Did I mention I live in the middle of nowhere?? :lmao:

I failed miserably trying to get Chad into that Fitness Yoga class with me.
And I think he was the smart one - I am wicked sore and tired today.
Today was going to be a stretch & strengthen day, but I don't dare stretch or strengthen anything right now! :scared1: I am going to instead add some strength on a walk/run day (probably tomorrow) to make up for it.

Hi CarolA!!!
I live near Atlanta! and I love the Peachtree - its a 6.2 mile party. Warning about the front groups: the closer you get to the front, the younger everyone around you gets. I could have been the mother of almost everyone in my group last year!
Make sure you have a copy of your drivers license and a copy of your race time ready and go to the grocery store on Mar 15th. They will have stacks & stacks of the early edition of the AJC and the application is in there. Usually in the sports section but there should be a notice on the front page. Fill it out and go straight to the post office to mail it.
Which 10k are you doing?
I use a Garmin 305 to track miles but before I got my Garmin, I went just on time then came home and tracked my miles. if you go to mapmyrun.com or to the USTAF site you can create your own route and/or just figure out how many miles you just ran.
I have a fuel belt that I bought at Fleet Feet in John's Creek but I think Dick's Sporting Goods carries them too. It wraps around my waist and has three little yellow bottles that I fill with water or powerade. I rarely use more than 2 of these bottles until I am running over 14 miles but I drink a bunch when I am finished.

Just a note...I'm in Atlanta too and usually do the Peachtree...HOWEVER...due to water restrictions, the race will NOT conclude in Piedmont Park this year
They don't have a new route planned yet, but word on the street has Turner Field involved :sad2:
You can follow the story in both ajc.com and the Atlanta Track Club website. Makes me hesitant to sign up this March.

I did it last year so I pretty much know what to expect and I expect to be in Group 3 if I get in and I will be at the back of that. My boyfriend actually handles the application process, he is in group 1A LOL! (With the youngsters, but he is pretty fast for someone in his mid 40's) Last year he waited on me. He told me "we won't have any problem finding each other, it's not crowded in the park" :rotfl2: YEAH he had never seen it crowded because he is finished and home before I cross the finish line. (We did find each other and he admitted it was crowded)
I don't do Peachtree for time... I do it for the T SHIRT!!!!
Wonder where we are going to end up this year? Could be an interersting year!
We are doing the Chuck Harris 10K in Tucker on 2/23 (I think that's the date)
The boyfriend is "thinking" about doing the WDW Half with me.... I really just wanted him to come cheer. As he puts it, he will be done, cleaned up and back at the finish line to greet me by the time I finish LOL! Of couse I started jogging at 46 and he started at 20 so he has a few years experience on me!

About the Peachtree, can I put DH and my apps in the same envelope or should I mail them separately?
So you just drop it off in the box at the Post Office Saturday night? Is it better to go to a Post Office that is closer to the Atlanta Track Club's office?

Just a note...I'm in Atlanta too and usually do the Peachtree...HOWEVER...due to water restrictions, the race will NOT conclude in Piedmont Park this year
They don't have a new route planned yet, but word on the street has Turner Field involved :sad2:
You can follow the story in both ajc.com and the Atlanta Track Club website. Makes me hesitant to sign up this March.
Have a good day!
Well I actually sent the Piedmont Conservancy group an email today asking why they thought people would want to donate to their cause to ENLARGE a park we can't use???? (This was after I saw an add on TV today!) (They claim it's not thier fault, but.... my Grandparents used to live near the park. The truth is that the folks who live there don't want the "riff raff" messing up thier park!)
And of course GA Tech claims 55,000 racers are a "security threat" Of course if we wanted to pay to go to a football game we would not be a "security threat" :lmao:
I think Randy puts both of our applications in one enveleope but I will ask tonight and post the response.
I actually don't think it's First come/First served, but you have to be in by a certain date and IF it's oversold they "lottery" (Rumor was no one got left out last year!)

About the Peachtree, can I put DH and my apps in the same envelope or should I mail them separately?
So you just drop it off in the box at the Post Office Saturday night? Is it better to go to a Post Office that is closer to the Atlanta Track Club's office?
I have taken my application to the box at the Post Office on Sunday morning each year and haven't had any issues. I live in Canton so I don't think proximity to the ATC offices should be an issues :)

I'm totally with you Carol!! It's also funny to me that the cut off is an event over 50,000...but there won't ever be 50,000 at one time in that park after the race! I bet there is no more than 12-20,000 at any one given time.
Can't believe they cannot make an exception for the largest 10k in the WORLD!

Good Evening Team
Did anyone just see the new Under Armour shoes on the Super Bowl commercial. I soooooo hope they make good running shoes, I love all things Under Armour.
OK training update: I RAN 3 MILES!!!:cool1: Averaged a 10 min pace, still good considering where I have been. Also really good considering how sore I was from the cardio class I took yesterday. Seriously my whole body hurt today :scared: So I'm thinking you aren't supposed to be that sore after a XT training day :confused3 Oh well, I'm sick but I miss being "sore" from a good work out.
OK off to watch the big game.

Krista and Steve – CONGRATS! Hearing baby’s heartbeat for the first time was one of the most exciting parts of pregnancy for me. How many more weeks until you go in for an ultrasound? Are y’all going to find out the gender?
Howard – Very cool for your son!
Vic – Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Carol – :welcome: I use a Garmin 205 to track my miles. No advice on the water, though – I’m sure you’ll get lots of input from others on that.
I've got nothing to report at all. Feeling a lot better this week, which is good, but by the time we get baby to sleep, I'm too tired to even think about getting out and walking.
I cannot believe that he's already 3 weeks old. Time shouldn't go by this quickly!!

Checked. Both of our applications went in the same envelope....
Angietuck2, I tried to convince my boyfriend that the reason he didn't look like the guys in UnderArmor commerical is that he buys cheap "Target" brand. (Well, genetics and steroids might be an issue too!):rotfl2:

Today I scored another 10-mile long run in 1:54, one minute slower than my 10-miler just before the WDW half:headache: ...so I need to actually do my mid-week runs to improve my speed :rolleyes1 But hey, I mowed the lawn right after my run today, so I got in 30 minutes of cross-training, right? :goodvibes
EVERYONE will love this: I finally reviewed my WDW Half data from my Garmin, and it had the right total time (2:53), but my total mileage was 20.12 miles!!! :cool1:
Better yet, one of my last laps has an average speed of 3,600 mph!!:woohoo:
Just call me Daschal Robert Parr, thank you!! I musta whipped out thru AK and the Studios and back without my running partner even realizing it (Erin thought I was just going to the bathroom in MK - little did she know!).
I heard sometimes the Garmins barf, but this one was quite entertaining :rotfl:

Hello,
Welcome Carol we are a great bunch.
Cam- What do you think it would take to get Jen to post on the boards? I am sorry to hear that you have a hard case.
Howard- Way to go on that long hike. I hope classes go as well for you as they are for me.
Jeff- Wow you really were not gone that long.
Well today was slated to be a rest day but then xterratri said she was going to run 40 minutes so I figured I should bike for 40 minutes. You know healthy competition and all:rolleyes1 . Took a quiz that opened and closed today during the Coverage of the super bowl. It was really easy though, all my classes are online and my professors seem to think that Fridays and weekends are great times to have quizes. I do not see their logic. Well nothing else to report.

I did 6 miles on the treadmill today in roughly 70 minutes. I'm thinking about running every other day rather than 3 days a week from now on. I think I have good mileage on my legs and that will help preparing for goofy when the time comes to get after it in September.

CarolA -- WELCOME!! :welcome:
WOW!! that is amazing!!! You two continue to amaze me at what wonderful parents/role models/people you are!!! :)
Kathy
Oh, you are so sweet!!
Thank you to everyone for the good WISHes on my new case. It is exciting and intimidating!
I've passed your congrats on to Jenn and she was all "I  the WISH team!" Erin -- I am definitely working on getting her to post here.
I also read Andrew all of your congratulatory messages and praise. It means a lot to him! Two really important things happened in connection wtih his task: Howard said that Andrew never once said he was tired or wanted to quit, even when he was limping along. When I called him to congratulate him and told him to ice his knees he said, "Wow, Mom, I have a whole new appreciation of what you do. I am so impressed that you went even further than that!" Tonight he showed me his Garmin and said that he couldn't believe how hard it was to do those miles and he wasn't anywhere near marathon pace. I reminded him that training brings speed and endurance and that I am so proud of what he accomplished. Oh, and I told him again to ICE his knees! :)
Howard - Appreciates his what his mother does but trains like his father! Nice job for the both of you. Also, congrats to Cam for landing a big case! Oh, and also to Jenn for starting off strong.
Mike -- that made me laugh!! You're right. I can't believe they didn't build up to the distance. I fear Howard is not setting a good example!
WOOHOO DH was the Scoutmaster for over 7 years, both our boys acheived Eagle Scout - not an easy feat - and we know for a fact that Hiking (and Cycling) are THE hardest merit badges to acheive!! WTG!! :lovestruc Love when they can appreciate the "parents" !
Thank you Sandy! I am really impressed that Andrew is pressing on toward Eagle Scout. And I'm really grateful that Howard is investing the time to help him.
So, I had the perfect excuse not to go into work today --Obama was speaking on the square outside my building and the secret service/security issues prohibited anyone from being in my building. So, I was able to go with Howard to the beach -- 2 hours away -- to plunge into the very cold (though not as cold as many past years) Atlantic Ocean. All of this for our love and support for Special Olympics. It was Howard's tenth year doing it and my fifth or sixth (I couldn't the years that my heart condition was uncontrolled, so I usually held the towels). The turnout was great because the weather was relatively mild. I think it was 50 degrees by plunge time at 1pm and the water temp was a balmy 42.
Here's we are pre-plunge, trying to condition ourselves to the cold and wind (LOL):
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8dc22b3127cceb491ddd78cb100000026100Ibt3DRs2cMT

Hello everyone!
Got up bright and early to head to gym for long walk on TM. Didn't work out exactly the way I wanted as my calf started to tighten up pretty bad. Still managed to get in 1.75 before having to stop. Better than nothing. Got some good stretching in and it's been ok rest of day.
Bought TM and exerbike for house so spent the afternoon lugging them down to basement, re-arraning the space then lugging the boxes and all the freakin packing material back up. Oh and managed to make lasagna in the middle of it all.
Howard & Cam- what a great accomplishment for your son! As for the polar bear plunge... they do that here in Chicago on NY's day. I love to swim but do require it to be farther above freezing.
Jeff - Some serious lap time, dude! I'm currently looking into a Garmin 205 - wonder if my time will immediately improve...
CarolA - Welcome!
Hope everyone has a good start to a new week!

:woohoo: THE NY GIANTS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!:woohoo:
Whether you like them or not or whether you like football or not, the play where Manning held on and came up on his feet and threw the ball, then that receiver held on to that ball like he wanted it more than anything is a good example of what can happen when you want something bad enough!!!!
OK off the soapbox now

Me, too. Man, that was a beautiful play, wasn't it? The first 3 quarters were dull, but at least they moved fast. And that 4th quarter -- wow! I love a good close game; there have been so many blow-outs in recent years.

I'm new to this WISH thing, so please forgive me for barging in.
Hi all you Atlanta folks!!:grouphug: I grew up in Atlanta watching the Peachtree from the comfort of my couch! :happytv: I'm impressed that you can do that. I talked with my mom this weekend and she told me about Piedmont Park not letting the race end there due to the drought. She said that their grass got ruined last year, and they can't water it to repair it. so they don't want all the people there. :confused3 I am anxious to see what they come up with. Well, I never EVER imagined that I would EVER be interested in running it, until now. I've only been running since August, and had to take a couple of months off due to a freak injury, so I've not been running long, and don't know if I could do it. That hill in front of Piedmont Hospital, scares me. :scared1: I'm not familiar with Heartattack Hill except in name only. :confused3 The name alone scares me though. My sister, BIL, and niece have all run it. My niece had to stop last year due to finding out she had diabetes, and didn't have her sugar regulated by the time of the race. I know this year is out for me because I will be white water rafting with my son and his church youth group that day, but maybe next year. :rolleyes1 Plus that will give me a year to train for it. I always grew up thinking it was a half marathon. :rotfl2: It seems like much further than 6.2 miles from Lenox down to Piedmont.
Oh, and I'm not a football fan, but that was one AWESOME game! Congrats GIANTS!!!

Good early morning Team.
A rule reminder for the miles game, you may NOT lynch your Panda for trash talking. So remember that.:) Not that I ever would but just in case.
We went to bed early and didn't watch the last quarter of the super bowl, looks like we missed an exciting ending.
Sounds like everyone is doing great getting their steps in this week, I bet there will be a lot of PRs this week.
Question: Will there be a regular WISH shirt order this year? Several people have asked me about the regular wish shirt in the T-Shirt and not the tank. I personally like the Tank for racing but the T for wearing to the meets.
Have a great morning guys. (Even you bunnies, buzzies and goof offs) (I suppose that Bill is going to have more time for training now that football season is over.)

A big :welcome: to all the new folks we have joining in!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
I apologie for not being around as much as I would have liked the past couple of weeks... my poor ailiing laptop finally gave out on me and thus, I didn't have much access to post.
My once again epic race report is nearly done and should be posted sometime tomorrow. I just want to thank everyone out there once again for making marathon weekend what it was... it was incredible!!
So incredible that I have once again registered to go Goofy next year. Something about what happened during the full is sticking in my craw a little and would like to finish a little better next year. (Not necessarily faster, mind you... but I would like to be smiling in at least one of my pics....)
What's the deal with the team thing?? I'm feeling left out :(
Howard and Cam-- I refused to go into the ocean yesterday because it was "too cold" here in Fort Lauderdale. Thank you for making me feel like a first class, grade-A weenie. ;)
I am still trying to decide on a next race, so right now training is a bit sporadic... just a few miles here and there. I really need to be training for something in order to really get out there.... gotta find a race to train for this week....
Happy training!

Good Morning Everyone!
That was an amazing win for the Giants. My first memory of american television is watching the Giants play: My uncle played for the Giants in the dark ages and we were watching them play the Redskins(?) in his basement. I had never seen football (or a TV that was actually IN someone's HOUSE.) I felt bad for the Patriots though, what a tough way to end an amazing season.
Shan - Same envelope just make sure you have enough postage on there. I don't think the post office matters. I mail mine from Alpharetta and haven't had a problem.
Angie -Way to go!! and no, that is not sick, it does feel good.
TXAng - Ok I am confused. Are you feeling guilty for not exercising when you just had a baby? My "baby" is almost 8 and I still use him as an excuse not to exercise somedays. You will know when you are ready to start walking again. The grey fog of exhaustion will get thinner and you will crave the outdoors. It will happen in due time, meantime, no guilt allowed. Get your rest when you can.
Biggertigger - Yep, you took the space shuttle to the finish line.
ALdisneygirl - Welcome! As for Heartattack Hill, the first time I ran the peachtree I asked a guy at the top of the hill "Where is that big hill everyone is worried about?" I never even felt it. I was mad that I had been conserving energy for it when I had already topped it. Don't let the name scare you, they call it that because there is a hospital at the top of the hill.

Hi everyone!
I'm working towards running the Minnie 15K in May and eventually the 1/2 marathon in 09. This is my first time running for anything other than the bus so I'm taking things slowly. I'm doing most of my training on a treadmill until it warms up outside. I've worked my way up from running 2 minutes/walking 5 minutes to the running 5 minutes and walking 2. I'm hoping by the time I reach May, I'll be able to run most of the course!
Definitely looking forward to reading about everyone else and the progress they're making :)

DeeKayPee (Debra)--I think what I love most about Power Pump is that is makes me lift weights, something I have never done on my own.
Krista and Steve--Congrats!! That is such an exciting event!!
Mel--Great job on getting those miles in. The weather around here is difficult. If you go out too early it is cold (well, cold to us Florida people), but if you wait too long it is HOT!!!
Howard--WOW, that is a lot of walking
Lisa--I am trying to add both weight lifting (with the above mentioned Power Pump--I am hoping that soon I can do it 2 days per week) and Cardio other than running/walking 2 days a week
Bill--Sorry for your loss last night
Amy--I used to go to Spin and I really liked it, but I can not get any of the class times to work in my schedule right now:sad1:
CarolA--WELCOME!!! We have a Garmin 205 and I can not imagine running without it. My DH uses a Camelpack, I just either carry a water bottle, or leave some along my path before I go out.
Renee--Great run, you will have no problem doing a Half in April!!
Kristi--I am sure that Yoga class will get easier, keep it up!
Angie--Good for you! I am sure it was a great feeling getting back out there for a good run!
TxAng--You are so right, time with the baby will continue to fly by!
Jeff--WOW you were really moving during the half:rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Erin--Way to go not letting your sister get in miles without you!! I LOVED taking online classes in college!!
Chris--Another great run for you, your commitment is really amazing!
Liz--Good job on getting something in and stopping when you felt pain!
Angie--That play in the 4th quarter was heartstopping, I could not believe he (eli) stayed on his feet and that the receiver caught the ball. It was a very exciting 4th quarter!
aldisneygrl--WELCOME!!
Sandi--I am a lifetime Cubs fan as well, I know the feeling of heartbreak oh so well!
Kevin--Thanks for checking in!
bunnyfoo--You are are doing great! Are you following any kind of training plan or just following your body?? We will see you at the Minnie!
I think I got everyone! It is another crazy day around here. We just finished school and now we are going to the park with Church Friends, and then I am off to work at the gym. I am hoping to get some time in on the bike after I get off work. Then dinner and bed!!!

Wow!!!! I'm so glad I stopped by this morning. You are all so supportive of one another. I was feeling kind of lazy this morning after getting the kiddos off, but now I have the motivation to get down on that treadmill.:cool1: I'm reading all the posts about yoga and remembering how much I loved it. My littlest one (he's 2) does not like the nursery situations.....so I'm doing all my workouts at home. I have a great Pilates DVD, but does anyone have suggestions for a good Yoga DVD? I'm looking for something relaxing, but a bit of a challenge as well. I'm hoping someone can help. Stay strong everyone and have a great day.

No plan per say right now, I'm just working on being able to run for at least 10 minutes straight. I think once I can do that, I'll focus on distance (instead of time - right now I'm doing my running/walking intervals for 30 minutes). I'm hoping that will happen in a week or so :)

John & Sean used to do the Polar Bear Plunge here in Jersey, but they haven’t done it the last couple of years do to other commitments. Also, congratulations to you on your big case.:thumbsup2
Kristi – Great job on the yoga class. Hope you’re not feeling too sore today. And…congrats to Chad on the new running shoes & socks.:upsidedow

Vic – Hope you are feeling better. Take care of yourself.:wizard:
Lily – I’m sorry I seem to have missed that you are having surgery. Hopefully it is nothing too serious. :wizard: & Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.
Welcome to all the newbies!
As for me…..after being sick for almost 2 weeks with a bronchial/asthma/sinus infection thing, I finally got back out there on Friday. Went to the gym & did an easy 45 min on the recumbent, then Saturday got out on the streets for a slow & easy 3.2 miles. It felt GREAT. Yesterday was a rest day, but we went out & did some geocaching.
Have a GREAT Day!

Greetings all -
Say, was there a football game yesterday??? :confused3
Did no training this weekend. Nothing. Matter of fact, I'm still trying to figure out just what the heck DID I do this weekend. It was a blur of activity and chaos.
I did, however, do 40 on the TM this morning. :thumbsup2
Krista and Steve - Was that a resting heartbeat? Congratulations! That is very exciting!
Howard - Wow, that is fabulous! Way to go, Andrew! :woohoo: And way to appreciate what your 'rents do even more now! Yay!
WWDave - I need a model for my new line of XT apparel...Any volunteers?? It required BYOBatteries and abillity to operate a tiny lock and key. :rolleyes1
NEPBill - I see I need to start on the weekly thread a little earlier. It's only Monday and look at all I've missed. :rolleyes2
Vic - Oh I hope you are feeling better. Is Nurse Marilyn giving you lots of TLC??
OptimatorMike - Please please go to Pilates. Please. It will be good for you. :rolleyes1
Kathy - I'll PM you. I have a Super Secret Spy Camera. He'll never know. ;)
Kristi - Oh you're so good, taking that class. I REALLY have to find some XT. I mean, other than what those guys think I am doing.
Jeff - Wow, you are totally supersonic!
Cam - OMG I am shivering just thinking about yesterday! Great pictures! :goodvibes
Kevin - OK Kevin, I know for sure that Charlie has absolutely no way of influencing you. He had nothing to do at all with you registering for the Goofy. Is that correct? He has been accused of influencing certain male members of the WISH team. I believe the term was "throwing down the gauntlet." OK, I'll wait for that race report because I know it will be worth it.popcorn::

Marilyn took care of me when she got home from work. In the meantime I had nurse Earnhardt and nurse Dusty providing the TLC. However, their idea of TLC is laying on top of you. Doesn't work too well when you can't breathe. :rotfl:

CONGRATULATIONS **REAL** GIANTS FANS!!! (I guess that now includes Giantsf/k/aSteelersSteve--gotta love a guy who sticks with a winner:thumbsup2 .)
I appreciate those expressing support, but no need. The Patriots had a great season (other than the last game of course) and as a life long Patriots and Red Sox fan, I wouldn't give up this decade for anything (especially seeing how well the teams did from 1919 through 2000). As to the Patriots, that includes a colorful past with ownership by the Sullivan family and Victor "Would You Buy a Razor from This Guy" Kiam and coaching stints by, among other NFL luminaries, Rod Rust and Dick McPhearson.
Please indulge me though as I express some personal thoughts on yesterdays events. My highlights of yesterday include:
*DD#2, after the game was over, quieting a group of disgruntled (adult) Patriots fans arguing over whether it was the offense's fault or the defense's fault the team lost by stating: "They are a team. The whole team wins and the whole team loses." :thumbsup2 (Maybe some things I say do get through.)
*Watching Big Ben (go Steelers) make a fool out of himself in a commercial and realizing things are good as a Patriots fan. We were in the Super Bowl and even in the years our team hasn't made it, Patriots players making millions of dollars a year don't embarrass themselves or the organization for the sake of making a few extra bucks.
*The Patriots were involved in another riveting Super Bowl that was not decided until the end.
*The Mayor of Boston doesn't have to worry about when to hold the parade and whether it will conflict with the Presidential primaries.
Weekend low lights include:
* A US Senator (from the Commonwealth where the Steelers call home), during a time when US military personnel are deployed around the world and are making the ultimate sacrifice, the nation's economy is going in the tank, and gas, home heating oil and related petroleum product prices are out of control, grand-stands and decides that the US Senate really needs to spend time holding hearings on why the NFL destroyed game films taken out in the open by the Patriots in violation of an NFL rule (not in violation of the US Constitution or any Federal law, regulation, guideline, suggestion or wish) and equates such a henious act to the CIA (a Federal government agency) destroying evidence. Man, things must be going really well and things must be slow in DC and the rust-belt.
*Coach Bill walking off the field with time left on the clock. I know it was only 1 second, but you stay until the game is over, win or lose, especially when you are the head coach and representing the organization.
*Not trying to single out Coach Bill (even though the Patriots were, IMHO, outcoached), but what was up with the new red hoodie? As soon as I saw him wearing it, I said he jinxed the team. He needed to wear the old, ratty, gray hoodie, even if it was the Super Bowl.
Now I can hunker down on my distance event career (at least until Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training in approximately 9 days 20 hours and 20 minutes).

Struggling to catch up....you guys really move fast here!
I can't possibly comment on everyone, but did want to congratulate Krista and Steve on hearing the baby's heartbeat. I think that awaiting the birth of your first child is truly the most magical time of anyone's life. Enjoy and cherish these moments.
Cam and Howard: wow, you are marathoners AND polar bears! That is something I really want to do. My plan is to do it next January 1st somewhere up around Albany NY, but my husband is totally dead set against it. My feeling is if I can train for a marathon for a whole year I can plunge my body into frigid waters for 2 minutes, right? I'm sure it won't seem so easy when I actually get on the beach! WTG, both of you!

I wanted to thank everyone for their comments on the leisurely 19/20 mile stroll my DS (Andrew) and I took on Saturday. It was a huge undertaking for him and shouldn't have been too difficult for me. I managed it well but I could have done some things a bit smarter, shoe choice, warmer clothing, gloves, etc.). :confused3 I live and learn.
I can't wait until later this week when Andrew is recognized at his Court of Honor for having attained "Life" rank. I am very proud of him and his efforts.

I do cycle (when it's warmer) and work out a lot, etc. But for some reason I'm really worried about spin class on Wednesday LOL! I fear I won't be able to do it!!! For those that have taken class before a few questions...

Hey, I figured I had to get a jab in somewhere, even if it was a cheap shot. ;) No, in all seriousness Bill, I do offer my condolences. I know all too well what it's like to be a huge fan and then see a seemingly unstoppable team have a bad game at the wrong time. Trust me, I wouldn't dislike the Pats so much if you guys weren't the team who usually beat my boys in those types of games in years past. :)
Yeah, the Roethlisberger commercial--I actually thought it was kind of funny, but he IS an aweful singer and pretty much did look like an idiot.
And I agree about Coach Bill's red hoodie. What the heck?? :confused3 As much as I like to poke fun at the homeless looking hoodie, you gotta dance with the girl who brung ya. Wear the gray one. No question about it.
Honestly, as hard as it is for me to admit, you guys had a great season and I hope it will be remembered that way. (Now please don't tell any other Steeler fans you know that a fellow Steeler fan is saying kind words about the Pats. I may be lynched). :)

Congratulations Cam, Howard and all those who have children in scouting. I greatly enjoyed scouting way back when and am happy my son decided to join cub scouts and, at least so far, also seems to enjoy participating (although it could be just that it gives him a chance to get away from his 3 sisters and hang out with "the guys" :confused3 ).

Howard - have you taken Okpik training? Wooodbadge Adult Leader Training? Outdoor Leadership? If not... WHY? (I have, and it does help in appreciating what the boys achieve! and it also helps with the equipment! Like hats, gloves...) and for me the best part of the Eagle Ceremony is when we as parents get to get up in front of everyone and let them hear our praise! How often does that happen? (and in return our boys have always told a story of how we've supported them!!)
(as an aside - I appreciate anyone going thru Girl Scouts - I was involved with Girl Scouts for 18years - thru college, and achieved the highest award in Girl Scouting - I didnt chose to let DD go beyond Brownies, its way too political and stagnant here - we hope she'll get involved in Boy Scouts Venture Crew!)
I have to agree with BigVic wtg on that plunge! (and esp supporting Special Olympics!!)
Bill WTG on your DD reminding us what is important in TEAM!! and so BOO to the coach that walks off the field to let his team go it alone! I hope he understands how wrong that was/is!! I'm sure Brady wanted to leave after his last down... what a player - as he was being brought down, his only thought was to signal a time out!

I am actually one of a few parents that have gone through council training. I served several years as Pack Committee Chair/Assistant Cub Master at the Cub Pack level. I have been a very active Scouting parent since my DS was a Cub. However, I have had to take a break from total involvement since I entered grad school. I finish up at the end of May so I am sure I'll be more of a presence later in the year and beyond.
This year's plunge was my 10th consecutive year. It is a great fundraiser for Special Olympics Delaware. Here is a link to the news article in our local paper....

Cam and I have been longtime supporters of Special Olympics. We have both served on the Summer Games Committee for many years and I was a unified Golf Partner with an athlete (7 years) until just recently.

Hi everyone -
I'm going to jump into the weekly thread. I am training for the Minnie in May using a modified Galloway half marathon training schedule.
Yesterday I did a 1 mile time trial plus 2.25 miles. My time trial was 9:37, which is very good for me. I did the 3.35 miles in 39:19 doing 5/1. I also walked for 5 minutes after the time trial.
My schedule is to run twice for 30-40 minutes during the week and then do a long run on the weekends. This week I'll be running on Tues & Thurs and do 6.5 miles on Saturday.

I do spinning twice a week. It only hurts the first few times. I don't wear anything special, but several of the ladies that are into cycling wear the padded shorts. Gel seats are nice, but you have to remember to take it with you. Alot of people who have them, end up leaving them behind unintentionally. Once you get used to spinning you can actually miss class for several months at a time and when you get back, you will not hurt again. I think it's more a function of how to position your weight than the seat actually hurting you. Once you get the hang of it, you have it for life. Spinning can be as hard or as easy as you make it. Even with a super tough instructor, you can always tailor your ride to your needs and it won't interfere with anyone else's workout. I really, really love my class...great ladies, great music, and before you know it the hour is over!

Hey, everybody, happy Monday!!!!! YAY for the GIANTS!!!! (Yes, you can be fans of one team and root for other teams when your team isn't in the game.) I'm really happy for them!
I'm going to try to catch up, but it's been a busy week and it's only Monday afternoon!
Cam and Howard--Please pass on my congrats to Andy! A 20 mile hike without any training is incredible! And you 2 crazy's with your polar bear plunge? WOW!!!
Stephanie--I think you are making the right decision to slow things down this year and concentrate on the half instead of Goofy. I got really burned out on running last summer and it was a struggle to get out there and run every day, I even dreaded the short 4 or 5 milers. Take some time to fall in love with running again.
Kevin--Good to see you again! I can't wait to read your novel. How are your dogs doing?
Angie--Did you see the new Runners World? There was a little blurb about Tim Bordland in there, about him running with the kids in the wheelchairs for AT. Congrats on running 3 miles!!! :woohoo:
Carol--:welcome: We are getting quite the showing from the Atlanta area! I'm glad you decided to run the half, I read the other thread and I have to tell you, I was sorely disappointed with the ToT too. The marathon is run so much better than ToT, if only they could correct the missing medal mistake.
I am very happy to say that the tiredness is quickly decreasing and I'm able to stay up later than 7:30! I did almost 7 miles this weekend, 3 miles running on Friday and 3.75 miles of walking on Sunday afternoon. I was supposed to go 4 miles, but I had Hines with me and the poor dog was absolutely dragging at 3.50 miles. We were in front of the house at 3.75, so we headed in. I have to get him trained again, not that long ago he was running 15-20 miles a week and can do 6 miles at a 10:00 pace.
Oh, I'm not sure if the baby's heart rate was in resting zone or not, but I do know it was beating FAST!!!!! ;)

Well in the name of cross-training, I finally jumped in and took the stroke training class at my gym. Can you say humiliation? By lap 8, I was clutching the side of the pool between laps and gasping for breath. I refused to give up even after the instructor moved to my side of the pool. When he started pacing beside me I decided I must look as pathetic as I felt. I wanted to scream "I ran a marathon less than a month ago - I am really not this out of shape" Instead I quietly attempted to wave good bye (My arm wasn't cooperating) and I slithered out of the pool area completely disgraced. I was going to try a spin class on Wednesday but now I think I will wait until the gym's instructors have forgotten what I look like.

Some good points **Krista**. I guess art (and funny) are in the eyes of the beholder. Peyton Manning (huckster extraordinaire), funny when asking produce-boy for autograph and cheering on workers coming off the job. (And I "hate" Peyton Manning.) But I guess I just see a difference in people laughing at you because you're trying to have them do it in some type of context and people laughing at you because you are doing something foolish (singing poorly and dreaming of being the next American Idol?).
Sure, everyone can root for any team. Of course, questions are raised, however, when extreme feelings of happiness and expressions of love are publicly posted about a team by so-called fans of another team. Then again, I guess those who loath success like to cheer for anyone just to see others lose.
Also, let me know what game "we" lost with grace and dignity. I can think of a few by your NY Giants, but my memory is a little fuzzy about your former Pittsburg Steelers. Is that the grace and dignity where right after the game "you" make comments like "The better team didn't win today.". Or is it several years later when "you" want to have past Super Bowls re-played because, as claimed by players still apparently licking their wounds, the only reason your former team got its collective butt kicked in AFC Championship games was because the Patriots openly taped 8 defensive plays of the NY Jets in 2007. Thus, the Patriots "must have cheated" to beat your former Steelers so badly in years past.

No I did not see it, thanks for the heads up. Believe it or not me, miss obsessed with running does not get that magazine, I just subscribed last week as a matter of fact. I will have to pick that one up. It was so moving to hear him talk about the 63 marathons in 63 days at the AT dinner marathon weekend. He has such a heart and a passion for these kids and brining awareness and ultimately a cure to these precious, courageous families. He doesn't even have a family member with the disease and he talked about how blessed he is to be able to use the gift God gave him, obviously he is super human, for such a good cause

And yeah, I'm sured I referred to Belichek as Belicheat, but I didn't crown them "cheaters", the NFL did when Belichek was fined and the Patriots have to give up a draft pick.
Krista-- I have no bones to pick at all. Not even during the year when you frequently referred to me as "PatsyBill" and referred to Bill Belichek as Belicheat.
My references to Pittsburgh Steeler players comments where simply directed to your reference that the Steelers somehow have the grace to lose with dignity. Those are comments made by Steelers, and I believe that includes your beloved Hines Ward, after losing to the Patriots in past AFC Championship games and this year after the infamous "SpyGate". In that you used the phrase "we have the grace", I mistakenly took that to mean the "we" also applied to the Steelers specific acts of grace and dignity. Sorry for getting confused over when you are a "we" and when they are a "we."
By the way, the NFL never "crowned", determine, intimated or hinted that the Patriots cheated. The NFL determined the Patriots violated a league rule by taping from the sideline -- taping from the stands and press box is allowed, but not from the field. In fact, in making its determination, the NFL expressly noted, and has done so on many occassions since, that the Patriots obtained no competitive advantage from its taping. The Patriots have been "crowned" cheaters by disgruntled and annoyed players and fans (as well as SI's Peter King who kept calling them cheaters even though he admitted later on that he has nothing to base his claims on) just because the "we['s] have the grace to lose a game with dignity," but apparently not the grace to lose too many games to the same team with dignity.

Question: Has anyone taken a ChiRunning workshop? Scott has read tehbook adn shared tips and i am now reading it. Looking to do a workshop this spring. That whole runnign injury free thing would be nice.
I just picked up the ChiWalking book as someone recommended it to me given my physical issues. From my lurking on the Philly '08ers f/k/a MCMers thread, I think Jodi is a big advocate of ChiRunning, but I don't know if she's ever done a workshop. If you're feeling brave, you might want to risk entering that thread to ask her.

Whatever, Bill, it doesn't matter because I'm officially done.
Dave--Yep, we'll be in Cleveland in May! Let's see, I'll be 28 weeks by then, nice and fat! :thumbsup2 I haven't felt the baby move yet, I've heard with your first you usually don't feel it until you are 17-18 weeks along. But I know for sure it's moving all around (I can't wait to find out what the baby is, I hate calling the baby "it"), the nurse had a heck of time trying to get a good heartbeat reading on Friday because it kept moving all around. :)

Umm, ok, wow. And I thought this was the friendly board. :confused3
Anyway, I managed 3.5 miles this afternoon.
Chad is sitting at the elementary school, holding our place in line to regsiter Zack for kindergarten. How the heck did that happen so fast?! And around here our elementary school is not only the best one in the city, but the morning session is in very high demand since that is the only way to get your kid into an afterschool day care type program. If your kid is in the afternoon session, day cares do not provide morning care. (if that makes any sense! :rotfl: ) So, I am going to get a quick shower and relieve Chad from his line sitting duties.
Cam & Howard - you guys rock! And tell Andrew how much another WISHer is of him! :thumbsup2

Cecilia
Too funny....did he make you do flip turns?
I decided I was going to learn how to swim when I turned 50 so I enrolled in a beginner's swimming course for adults at our local Y. I think the guy was used to teaching little kids because as an exercise we had to swim through a hula hoop. As a 50-year-old 200 lb. woman (in a black bathing suit, no less), I felt like I was auditioning for the role of Shamu the whale! Talk about degradation!

Cecilia,
I feel your pain. I decided to get back in the pool and use swimming as cross training. I haven't done it for over 20 years. But it's just like riding a bike, right? :) Anyway, the first time, I felt like I was going to drown and that water would go up my nose and into my brain! But after about 15 minutes (and alternating strokes) I felt almost okay. Hope it gets better, cause I think it will be useful to do to keep the knees from crying uncle.
Anyway, as a newbie runner, I reached a milestone over the weekend. I ran 3 miles without any walking in about 28/29 minutes (I forgot to start my watch!) I'm really only shooting for 10 minute miles, so I know I need to work on pace. But I'm not worrying about that now. Just gotta build my miles.

Carrie - I picked up the ChiRunning book in Chicago last week. I really hope it helps me. My area is not the greatest for running inspiration, so I doubt a session will ever come here. But if one came close I would love to go to one!
Krista - I forgot to mention about the heartbeat. Yah for you. I cried when I heard it with #1, and also with #2, but that is because they couldn't find it. Well now I know why... she is a WILD child!!!!!
Jeff - I also wanted to mention about your siggy.... totally LOVE the things you tell Lenna. You daughter and mine seem so much alike. We may not want them to ever meet!! ;)
Oh, and I am a total slug. Did 40 on the TM on Saturday and another 20 of other things. But today didn't make it to the gym. I need a personal assistant to keep me in line and get me to where I really need to go!!!!

Chi Running workshop- never taken one, read a book on running for triathletes that subscribed to Ken Mierke's Evolution Running principles which are basically the same thing and made the changes about two years ago. With one notable exception that was entirely my fault and due to copious violation of the 10% rule, I've been uninjured running since.
Bill and other Boston area folk- Chi running workshop(s) Mar 30 at MIT at a big Multisport expo:
http://www.newenglandmultisportexpo.com/
The info on Chi Running, Total Immersion swimming, and Yoga for Athletes and other clinics is under the Clinics tab. The Expo itself plus seminars are free but these clinics have a fee. We'll probably drive over for the event.
Cecilia- swimming is 80+% technique from doing it competitively from a young age and then some conditioning. My little sister's conditioning in the pool is miserable right now but she can get in and beat me without a huge amount of effort and I swim circles literally around most people at the pool. Why- I'm an adult onset swimmer and she was whining about not being allowed by Mom to swim the 1650 until she was 10. I will never have the feel for the water that she does. I think Kevin/solotraveler was a competitive swimmer too. The bright side to this is that swimming is the shortest part of a triathlon proportionally so I usually can take back what I lose to the true fishies on the bike and run. So the upshot of this is don't feel too bad, just get back there and tri it again. Think of it as a new challenge:)

am very happy to say that the tiredness is quickly decreasing and I'm able to stay up later than 7:30!
Yay Krista! AWESOME getting those miles in this weekend!! :thumbsup2
Cecilia: OMG...now I'm REALLY scared to take spin class. AND more scared to train for this tri. Swimmers are amazing in my book...that's tough work!!! Way to go on getting out there girl! You did awesome despite how you felt! :goodvibes I can see it now....I fall off the bike and faint from exhaustion. The clients whisper "didn't she just run a marathon??"
Jeanne: THANK YOU for all the great info on the spin class :).

Soooo far behind. You've all been posting machines! Yea!!! I love the energy we have. I'm going to miss some posts from last week, but here goes:
Mel: Yea, that's you, slacker. Hah! You sound like you have a nice, even pace? If so, congrats! I'd like to get that kind of consistency off-TM.
Howard: 19 miles! Yeah!! And to your DS, :cool1: Life Rank, huh? That's impressive. Kudos to Jenn, too! And Cam. Geez, the whole family is just so darned impressive!
Mike and Kathy: I'd definitely pay to see a pic of Mike taking Pilates. Walk in the park, trust me. Oh, and Saturday's 14 miles wasn't bad. :lmao:
Lisa: Big shout-out to you for being so encouraging of the Super Goofs! (Not that they need it). But you should know that I'm also inspired by your "try something new" challenge! What a great way to kick things off!
Stacey: 4 miles instead of 3! That's a HUGE difference, percentage-wise and in terms of effort! WTG!
WWDave: I hope your walking has been going as well as your trash-talking. Team Ohana misses your special attention, but I can see why you'd be hesitant to give us your motivational speeches. We are intimidating.
Vic: I hope the recovery from pneumonia continues to going well!
Amy: You never fail to impress me with all your energy. You keep my head in the XT game, and I mean that in a good way. I miss the ski machine at my old gym; the elliptical just isn't the same.
Tricia: That's great that you and your DN might do the Minnie 5K. I hope your calves feel better and you enjoy your running club.
CarolA: Welcome! WTG with planning for Peachtree and getting your 3.4/50 minutes in. I tend to use my watch and my Nike+ for time/distance. The latter isn't particularly accurate, but tends to be close enough for my purposes at this point. I'm hoping to invest in a Garmin soon. I have a water belt for LRs. But I'll let those more experienced than I speak in more detail.
Renee: Great job with your run; it looks like you'll be in good shape for an April 1/2!
Kristi: Hopefully it's a good sore from the Fitness Yoga, right?
Angie: I think you're doing great! And I hope you're thinking of sticking with XT as a way to mix things up.
Jeff: WTG on the 10 miler! And hey, with any luck, your Garmin will record similar data during the Miles/Minutes challenge! :rotfl2:
Erin: WTG on the 40 minutes--wtg? on the quiz?
Chris: Another TM run at a good pace! I agree that running every other day might be good training, as it sounds like you can handle it.
Cam: What a great mini-report on the polar-bear plunge. Loved the pics!:thumbsup2
Liz: 1.75 is much better than nothing! You started your workout & then were smart enough to quit before anything went wrong! And lugging new equipment around? Now, THAT's a workout!
AlDisneyGirl: Welcome! Seems like we have quite the Peachtree contingency here.
Kevin: I'm looking forward to reading your report. Goofy kind of gets in your blood, doesn't it? (I have to say, I envy your times...)
BunnyFoo: Welcome! You're already doing great with a 5/2, and on a TM! I can't wait to hear more of your progress. It sounds like the Minnie will be such fun.
Christy: Thanks for the info on PowerPump.
Tracey: I like Rodney Yee's series of yoga videos. He offers a range of levels of practice, so you could choose one that fits your interests.
39Cinderella: Get out there and do it, girl! Let the high from the Superbowl game carry over into your workout!
Karen: I'm glad you're feeling better and that your miles went easy. And geocaching? That sounds like so much fun!
Judy: WTG with the 40. Isn't it amazing how fast a weekend can fly by? I'm also with you on the Superbowl. I was so sick I crawled in bed & missed the first quarter!
As for me: I was sicker this weekend than I have been in a long time. I managed to keep up with XT, although I'm not quite sure if it was because I was motivated by the desire to sweat the fever out of me or by the Miles/Minutes Challenge. I managed to put in my time Saturday & Sunday, but without a lot of energy or conviction.
By Sunday I was convinced any working out was an exercise in foolishness more than anything else. I worked out that morning & was crashed in my bed by the afternoon. We canned our Superbowl festivities so that I could rest; I woke up in time to see the halftime show and part of the 3rd quarter. Then I crawled in bed; it turns out I missed an incredible game!
The good news is, all that sleep on Sunday--I probably clocked 14 hours--eventually broke my fever. I woke up today feeling better than I had since Thursday. I even thought I'd be able to run today, but decided to be conservative & go to the gym. Lucky for me, because I got 1 mile in on the TM before I said, "Nope, not recovered yet." So I did yet more XT, at a leisurely pace that didn't hurt my lungs. At least I no longer feel contagious and I'm logging minutes for Team Ohana (albeit the hard way). I'm hoping to get some real R/W in by Wednesday.

No training to report yet. I had a physical today. All was well. I'll spare everyone the details, but I did have one funny thing happen-- the doctor was looking under my arm and he asked me if I had some sort of accident or something because he saw "a little discolored area." So I'm drawing a blank (I'm in the gown, who can think?!) and then it hits me. Yep, marathon sports bra injury. I forgot all about it!
I have the ChiRunning book, but I read it awhile back. I didn't understand a lot of it, but I hadn't been running long. I probably need to get it out again. A clinic would be very cool. (My problem was always that it made perfect sense when I read it, but I couldn't remember what I read when I was running).:rolleyes1
I'd be interested in ChiWalking too. My mom and her friend who scream teamed signed up for the 2009 half. They're in good shape, but are nervous about the pace. Right now I've instructed them to walk 3-4 times a week about 3-4 miles each time, and to focus on the mileage more than the time. I want them to develop some confidence first, and then try to maybe incorporate a very small bit of "sweeper-avoiding" running intervals. Slow running is so much easier for me than fast walking! I can't believe they are looking to me to be their "coach"-- I'll be lurking a lot on the walkers thread because I am so completely underqualified!

Jeanne: Yes, this thread really does move at lightning speed, doesn't it? (Unlike me.) Good thing Ohana is spending more time on the road than online! :goodvibes And thanks for the information on spinning. DH and I keep talking about taking a class, and keep hesitating. So it's really good to read about how you keep challenging yourself--it's a great motivator for me!
Bill: My sympathies for you regarding the Superbowl Game, as I know how much your love your team, although it sounds like NY played a good game. I loved your DD's acknowledgment of the team in team sports. She's more mature than many of us. And the Pats had a phenomenal season; the loss & Bill's behavior at the end of the Superbowl can't take away from that.
Steve: It's too bad I missed the Big Ben commercial--and to think a year ago I wouldn't have known who Big Ben was. That's what living in Pgh will do to a person.
Deb: Welcome! Galloway's popular here, and it looks like you have a solid plan for the Minnie! I look forward to hearing your progress.
Krista: Great workout weekend. I'm glad you're getting over your tiredness & it's Hines who's tuckered out and not you. I'm really looking forward to reading about your training as everything progresses.
Cecilia: Your post had me rolling! That's what I feel like every time I try a new class. Don't mind me, I'll just slink off to my dark corner now.... It's good to know others have similar experiences. I'm really going to try and embrace Lisa's call to the Super Goofs & try something new and outside of my comfort zone.
Carrie: I didn't know about Yak Trax until you posted about them. How do they work for you. Just curious. I'm waiting to get the ChiRunning book & video from the library, so I'm interested in knowing what you and Scott make of it.
MouseDave: Good job with the 40 on the exercise bike! Another Cleveland entrant, huh? DH and I are still on the fence because of work commitments. (Boo, hiss, work. Why don't I just win the lottery? Oh yeah, because I don't play.)
Kristi: Remember when line-sitting was for concerts? Now it's for races & kindergarten! :lmao: WTG with the 3.5, btw!
Maura: You're doing wonderfully well. I hope to, someday, hit 3 miles in 30 minutes (a tortoise, I am). Congrats on your milestone/PR!
Jen: Oh, my co-captain. Pleakley is kind of slug like, sort of? I'm not a PA, in real or virtual life, but here goes. "Ahem.* "Get thee to a nunnery." Wait. That's not right, is it? Darn that humanities training. Anyway, celebrate the hour's worth of activity that you DID accomplish--you had one heck of a week!
xterratri: Thanks for the feedback on ChiRunning and Ken Mierke's Evolution Running. Another title for my rapidly expanding list. Now if I only had time to read them all...
JeninGA: No, I can totally see you as a coach. You seem so positive and upbeat! And FWIW, I think your planning strategy is spot-on!
I also second (third? fourth?) all the praise of the children in Scouting & the parents who support them! And it's not just because I like those Girl Scout cookies, although that doesn't hurt any... Ditto on the shout-out to supporting Special Olympics. Two activities that seem to fit well with a WISH ethos! :yay:

Krista & Steve - Congratulations on hearing the heartbeat! And great that you're getting some energy back. Now if only Hines can build his back up... Mystic did 5 miles with us last weekend and wondered what in the world had happened?
Cam & Howard - Congrats to both of you on your talented offspring! And kudos for the polar bear plunge.
Debra - Hope you're feeling better.
Chris - Read your article on the other thread - it's terrific and truly inspiring!
Maura - Great job on the 3 miles! I've been at this for 2 years and still can't do that except for on the TM.
Renee - Are you doing the Raleigh Rocks on 4/5? I was hoping for Morehead City on 3/8, but since I blew off my LR last weekend, I'm now thinking maybe I should skip that one and just plan on Raleigh.
Kevin - Welcome back! (We seem to say that to you an awful lot - how about hanging around for a while?)
Jeff - I thought my Garmin was confused when it said 13.26 for the half - I feel much better now. Apparently I ran the short course!
Judy - Sorry I didn't join you on the TM this morning - I knew it was going to be warm today so I could run outside.
Had an awesome run tonight. Did 4 miles in 45:46. That was my second fastest non-race pace EVER. Just felt like pushing a little harder than usual - probably since I felt bad about not running all weekend! It helps that we're having a week of absolutely gorgeous weather.

Hey guys, don't have too much time tonight, but just thought I'd pop in to say hi.
Actually, I really got on here to say Cam and Howard--you two are crazy with that Polar Bear Plunge. Crazy, crazy, crazy. You know, maybe I'm just ignorant, but when I saw you guys had done it, I asked Krista, "Isn't that the thing where you jump into the freezing cold ocean naked?" And then she informed me that one need not be naked to take the plunge. Oh. Well now I feel stupid. But you guys are still crazy. :)
Have a great evening everyone!

My goodness this thread moves so fast and being a newbie and not knowing all the names yet and who is who, well it is a little overwhelming. Deep breath!
Kudos to all of you keeping up with your training and trying new things and being encouraging and hearing baby heartbeats and hiking loooong hikes! :thumbsup2
Bill, I too am a huge Pats fan. 18-0 is still a huge thing to be proud of, he never should have worn a new hoodie (I said the same thing when I first saw him) and I will admit I went to bed feeling ill last night. I love, love, did I say LOVE the Patriots and it has been an amazing season. Never thought it would end like it did last night. I still love my boys and next season is only what, 6 months or so away? I will continue to wear my Pats clothing with pride.
On another note I decided to do W1 again on the Couch to 5K plan. Did it yesterday, felt good. DH decided to show me this thing he read in one of his magazines, called the plank? I had never heard of it, a kind of stretch or strengthening something or other. I try it, last a few seconds and it about kills me, hurts my back and I tell him no way.
Fast forward to today, what is this? A literal pain in my behind, yes it feels like the sciatica I had briefly when I was pregnant. Not good. Ibuprofren seems to relieve it but when it wears off it hurts! Could it be from the plank? Could it be from running? I really didn't feel like the walk/run overdid it at all. I took a jacuzzi tub tonight and I am in bed lying on a heating pad. I really hope this goes away soon. Any advice?
And a  kudos for my DH, he bought me a Timex Ladies Ironman Triathalon watch as an early Valentine's Day gift. He thought now that I am walking/running that it might be useful.

I have had sciatica, both when PG and periodically due to a back injury. The only thing that works for me... stretching and ibuprofen. It won't go away instantly, but the more you stretch the area the better it will feel. Do a search online for the stretches, there are lots of sites that show pictures.

What a busy day we've all had here! I love that everyone is talking about XT. Swimming will be a good way to get your breathing coordinated as you are running/walking/wogging. At least that has helped me. I've never tried spinning. I think that I would be the one everyoneo would laugh at there. Is there such a thing as a slow spinner? I missed going to the gym today with DH. I stayed home for a lesser w/o since I wasn't sure my stomach was going to cooperate with me. Must have had too much Superbowl food yesterday.

Aloha everyone,
I guess I jinxed myself with a previous post that Honolulu's weather got down to 79 degrees the other week. LOL.
Mother Nature has gotten revenge by heavy rains, flooding, and winds. It has been a forced week off from running for me. Oh well, I only rested one week after the Goofy, then went back out. I guess rest never hurts.
Hope to be on the road tomorrow. Just 13 days before my next race, the Great Aloha Run. http://www.greataloharun.com/
Does anyone have the Garmin 405 Forerunner watch? If so, what do you think of it? Does the heart monitor work well? Let me know, I'm looking to get one soon.
Shan: My daughter is a Junior Girl Scout, and is up to 162 boxes of cookies. I told her not to sell too many, because then we have to collect and count all those bills. LOL. BTW, I'm the troop leader of 10 Juniors and 3 Brownies.

Have a great week everyone.

Allyson: Do not give up on the plank so quickly. Remember that proper running requires a strong core and the plank is awesome for your core. Every evening I do this routine: Plank (hold for at least 1 minute, shooting for 2.5), bird dog, downward dog (yes Kristi, it is so optimal for your hammies and back) and then some Swiss ball work for my abs. It hurt at first but now I love it!! I can almost see my abs again....yes that was almost.
Debra (deekay): I am so happy that you have embraced my challenge. I feel that Cecilia (Cruella de Mom) and Kristi1357 have also even if they did not intend to. I hope that everyone gives the challenge a chance. Adding something new to your routine is always beneficial to you even if it is mentally.
Kristi and Cecilia: Please stick with your respective new adventures. Remember, nothing is easy when you start it. Kind of like now when you say "oh I ONLY have to run x number of miles today". For me, 3 miles was monumental a year and a half ago and now it is an easy day. We all have to start somewhere so keep working and you will see the benefits. We never grow by giving up!!!
Yes, this thread does move way too quickly. I have been working on our miles challenge thread and completely lost touch. Sorry for anything exciting that I missed but I only read back to the negative banter and decided to stop there. Today is a new day, deep breaths, positive thoughts and what was that the Great Panda said....relentless forward motion!!! :goodvibes

Lisa - Love dwrd dog for my Hammy. Life saver. What's bird dog, though? Yes, a relative yoga newbie.
Debra - I liek my Yak Trax, but still won't go when it's more ice than snow. Dh and I trained fro 06 completely outdoors. I think we used our luck up then.
Allyson - Be careful not to go too far too fast. We don't usually do plank until we have warmed our backs up a bit. Start extra gentle if oyu go right to it adn never make anything hurt. Sorry, I'm a worrier.
Jeff- SOrry about the weather. Kind of. ;) Hard to feel sorry for warm climates in January, but flooding is never good.
I blew it last night. Had a very bad evening and did not want to walk into the gym when andyone could look at my face and I had been crying. (Nothing that bad, just a stressful day because I was witing for word on my aunt, who was insurgery. Mix of relief and anger that my parents didn't get around to telling me she was ok. Grrrrr...) I will do Monday's work out on Wednesday.

Any advice?
Allyson - Advice - yes - find a chiropractor who specializes in Active Release Therapy (http://www.activerelease.com/). I have a pain like that too and it gets agravated by sitting too much, but also can hurt after long runs. As soon as I started getting ART it improved so much. I went for three initial sessions in about 2 weeks and now I just go in for a tune up every once in awhile.

Me too! My husband asked me last night if I wanted to walk the dogs. Well, I was busy :surfweb: DISing of course, but then I though. Hey that would get me more miles and more minutes! :thumbsup2 ;) We enjoyed it, but I think the dogs enjoyed it more. It has been to cold for them lately. They neither one have much hair to keep them insulated, so it has to be warm for them.
I have a question for those more experienced than me, which is MOST of you. ;) I have started back with my C25K training. I am on day2 of week 2. I still can only maintain a 15 minute pace. Will I eventually get faster? How can I push myself without hurting myself? Will it come with time? I just see everyone else's progress and I feel like the pokey little turtle.

Allie--Just work on the distance, trust me the speed will come. If you work on distance and speed at the same, that is a recipe for injury. So get out there and walk your miles, who cares if it takes you 15 minutes to walk a mile or 35 minutes, at least you are out there putting the steps in, that's the most important thing.
Good luck!!

Krista - Thanks! Although the program is based on walk 5 minutes, run 1 1/2 minutes, walk 2 minutes, then repeat for 25 minutes. I guess I will just keep at it, and will see my distance increase with time. Especially since I have in a nice spreadsheet for easy reference for our Team challenge. :thumbsup2

Greetings Race Team -
I did 30 min on the TM this morning with my new orthodics. No Bird Cage antics, but they feel really heavy, After about ten minutes I forgot I was wearing them, so I guess they'll work out OK. :thumbsup2
With all this talk of XT I figured I'd better come up with some. So I decide to start off with the abs workout in the latest RW magazine. I have discovered, much to my dismay, that I have absolutely no abdominal muscles whatsoever. I don't know how I remain upright. It's a medical mystery! Guess I really need core work. Yes indeed! :rolleyes2
Angie - I saw yesterday that it was at 65% so I figured I'd better register now before I can't! Yikes! Can you imagine! Oh well, I'm all set now. Yay! :woohoo: I wonder when we can start registering for volunteering.
Krista - This is very exciting! Have you picked out any names? :goodvibes Have you told Hines yet? :paw:
Kristi - Wow, they keep in you suspense that long? I didn't realize getting in kindergarten was that difficult. :headache: Was Chad standing in that line with all the other kindergarten mothers?
Jeanne - OK, Jeanne, I was thinking it's about time I learn to swim but I think you just talked me out of it. :scared:
Jen in Ga - "Marathon sports bra injury"
Jeff in HA - I read eleven inches in one day! Holy moly! Hope you have dried out!

Hi Everyone!
Today was more hill training. Ugh. I want to move back to Florida.
More importantly, I want the name of the train that just ran over my quads.
Allie - Krista's answer is exactly right. The speed will come. Just keep to the schedule and get the steps in. Start slow and steady. Some people here have been running for years so try not to compare where you are with where they are.
We are all so excited for you because we know what a wonderful and amazing journey you are starting. We know how exciting it is going to feel to meet all those milestones. To tell you the truth, I am a little jealous. You have no idea how much fun the next year is going to be!

Allie: Ditto on everyone elses advice. I have been 2 years and am STILL working on speed. More important now is distance and then pace became more important for me. I would always come out too fast and then have nothing to finish. Pace work has helped me a lot. Keep working and you will soon be right up there with the rabbits.
Carrie: Bird dog is on all fours and opposite leg and arm out straight. Hold for 1 minute if you can. It is all about holding your core so you can balance. It does not sound difficult but, trust me, it is. THe other one that I like is not yoga but great for your core. Lay on a Swiss ball (upper back, hips free) and put your knees at 90 degrees feet flat on the floor. Arms out at your sides straight and alternate picking up your knees as high as you can in a running type motion. It is a core killer!!!
I am so happy to hear that the challenge is keeping people going. I am not working today due to having this yuck thing in my chest. I forced myself outside yesterday to run but woke up with a fever this morning. Today is some yoga and weights...all inside...and only as I feel well enough. I hope others are having a better day. But, at least I am still doing SOMETHING...right....:confused3

Allie--I can't add much more than what everyone else has said, but they're all right. Just worry about getting the steps in; the speed will follow. Like Cecilia said, I too am a little jealous. Those milestones that you're going to hit are phenomenal experiences. I can't even put into words how it feels to finish a new distance or reach a new goal for the first time. To be honest, it's one of the things that keeps us all moving forward--to hit those new goals, however big or small they may be (John Bingham has a great column about that this month in RW if you get a chance to check it out).
So congrats on continuing with your plan, and enjoy all those new experiences as they come!

Ok, I am just going to keep following the Couch to 5K plan, and I'll keep y'all posted on my progress. I don't want to hurt myself because that is what sidelined me in October, besides the fact that my son's 350 lb. hockey coach fell on my leg the evening after I ran a 5K. :scared: So, I started at square one again. I was on week 6 when that happened, so I will be happy when I can get to week 9 and can run for 30 minutes straight. I'm on week 2, so 7 weeks to go!
Thanks for all your feedback. Y'all are the bestest! :cheer2:
I am running a 2 mile run on Sunday, so I just don't want to be last. That is my goal.

Boy I am gone for a few days and it is going to take another couple just to catch up on everything. :lmao:
All the northerners can laugh now. While on vacation, I went out for my long run. Being from Florida, I have one pair of long running pants which I left at home since I don't know where they are right now. So all decked out in shorts and the marathon shirt, I went outside and promptly froze. :rotfl2: I think my hands were numb after a mile or so. Once I was done, I went inside to see how far below freezing it was and found out it was only 41 degrees. :rolleyes1 I think I will stick with the Florida weather for a while. For you Vic, once again I was stopped by the university campus police. This time he only had his window rolled down so he could stay in his warm car. I guess I just look like a shady character.
PatsBill - Sorry about the loss. However I should have Panda call you up to whisper his sweet nothings each time I have to hear about the 72 Dolphins. Judging on what I have heard after two days, you might want to change your phone number. :lmao:
Carrie - Glad your aunt is ok. Sorry it was a little stressful for you.
Krista and Steve - Congrats on the heartbeat.
Howard and Cam - Great job on the hike. As an Eagle Scout, I wish Andy well on finishing up. As for jumping in the cold water, well I will be more than happy to let you do that for me. :rotfl2:
Judy - Bird cages and treadmills, I guess I need to do a little more reading... As for how you remain upright, I think it was you who was lying down playing with a foam roller and enjoying it a little too much. Also you were lying down when summoning the EMT's. :rolleyes1 However you were definately upright when booking it through the half. Maybe it is the momentum that keeps you upright. ;)
Vic - Hope you are feeling better or is that Marilyn hopes you are feeling better. ;)
Welcome to all the new members.
Hopefully I can catch up later tonight but I have a feeling that household catching up may take a priority. At least that is what I have been told...;)

Any advice?
Allyson
Hi Allyson... I teach plank in all of my classes (Pilates/Yoga Fusion) and I can give you some advice here. IF your back is hurting during plank, that means that you aren't using the core muscles to hold up the core (section of your body from the shoulders to the hips/top of thighs). In other words you are allowing your back to arch (belly lower to the floor) thus loading your lower back (lumbar) with all the pressure of the exercise. I'm assuming it is hurting your lower back area, and perhaps that is why the sciatica is acting up. But running can definitely impact the glutes and piriformis muscle leading to sciatic pain as well.
Let's first discuss the Plank...to be performed correctly....Start on all fours....with shoulders aligned with the wrists. Arms are only shoulder distance apart, hands flat on mat. Pull your abdominal muscles in tight...keep a flat back. From this position step one foot at a time back, reaching the heels back, keeping your legs strong and your shoulder/wrist alignment in tact. Once in this position, do not allow your back to sag down and try not to let your butt lift up in the air...continue to tighten your core abdominal and back muscles to keep you lifted. Your neck should be in alignment with your spine...your gaze should be downward. Imagine a long line from your tailbone...to the top of your head.
As you begin ONLY hold this position for a count of 10. Then lower your knees..then press yourself back into a resting pose stretching out your back (it's called child's pose in yoga). In other words leave your arms in front and sit back on your heals for a nice back stretch. Then repeat the plank again IF you feel up to it. Continue to work your way up to 60 seconds and beyond :). IF you have any specific questions, please let me know.
As for the possible running connection with your sciatic pain...Make sure you are doing glute stretches after running or walking. I do the stretch where I lay on the floor, bring my right ankle over my left knee (left leg is bent). Place your hands behind the left hamstring and gently pull the leg toward you keeping knee bent. Hope that makes sense.
Hope you're feeling better today. Plank is an AWESOME core exercise...but as with everything just the smallest misalignment can cause pain or injury. So do be cautious.

Amy--I keep forgetting that we've got you as a resident expert on core exercises. I'm going to have to PM you at some point. I've been doing the same core stuff for about three years and I should probably change it up. I don't have a ton of time to spend on core, but I do try to get in 15 minutes or so 4-5 times per week.
But thanks for all the advice you're able to give. It really does shed new light on an area of running that a lot of us tend to neglect.

Maura
That's great! I'm really impressed. :thumbsup2 I'm also a newbie runner, but I run SLOW! I haven't timed myself, but it probably takes me about 40-45 min to run 2.75 miles. I'm hoping that my speed will get better as my training progresses.

I'm so impressed with all the pilates/yoga knowledge in this group! I really need to work on XT.
Allie- What the others said, but I wanted to add, don't worry about being dead last in your race! My first 5k was a local race (maybe 40 people). I finished in just over 30 minutes, but was DLF! It was disappointing to be DLF, but then I realized that was a great PR for me and I just picked a race with too many fast people.

I have a hard time with those sorts of things since I had an operation on my left hand when I was 8. Very weird story, but they were trying to correct my deformed thumbs with a tendon from my foot. Basically, the "new" tendon comes arcoss the wrist/base of my hand. Makes push-up type exercises difficult since it hurts.
Just back from the Y. Meant to be 5 miles. Ended up doing 3.

Wow, I just had a huge scare. I looked down and noticed my engagement ring was gone and all that was there was my wedding band. OMG!!!
DH and I had been all over the place this morning - ran (on trails!), voted, Target and out to lunch. I thought that ring was long gone. I ended up dumping out the trash in the kitchen and found it in there! Time to get it resized! I guess that is my Valentine's Day gift this year! :lmao: Needless to say, they are off my hand and in a safe place.
Yep, our run this morning killed me. We went to this park we hadn't tried before (East Cobb Park for those that live in Atlanta) and tried their "trails". Muddy, muddy mess. We ended up leaving and running on the sidewalk near there and the hills were INTENSE. I thought I was gonna die. Good prep for the ING Georgia I guess. Pace ended up being 10:39, but only because I FLEW back down those hills!
At Target I got some balance ball, resistance band, DVD combo. It was on clearance. We'll see how that goes. My wimp huge dog is scared of the big pink ball. :rotfl2:

Cecilia and Kristi: You can do plank two ways if you can't put your hands flat. First option is to do it on fists/knuckles (hands in a fist with flat part of knuckles down). This may not help though, as it still may put pressure on the part of your hand that hurts. Sooo...your second option is to do a forearm plank. Elbows aligned with the shoulders, arms in front with soft fists. All the pressure is then on your forearms and not the wrist/hand. Forearm plank is still a lot of core work...you still reach your heels back, pull in the core (think belly button reaching up to spine)...maintain a nice long line without letting the belly sag or the butt lift up. Neck remains long (extension of the spine)...still gazing down. You can hold this for anywhere up to 2 minutes!!! Work up to that by starting with 10-30 seconds at a time! :thumbsup2 Let me know if you have any questions.

Kristi: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a.m. kindergarten! Thanks for the info on volunteering. And I think you should pat yourself on the back for the 3; it sounds like you gave it everything you had! :yay:
Amy: Ohana is filled with Trekkies and sci-fi geeks of all galaxies. Feel free to hang out with us every once and a while--no donation of hours/miles necessary. You'll help keep us motivated; you're the real hard core woman! :cool1: Oh, and thanks for the info on the plank!
Jackie: WTG on the PR for the non-race pace. I'm glad you're enjoying the weather and your running!
Allyson: I don't have anything to add to the plank advice, except know you're not alone. The plank is a personal demon of mine. Every time I think I'm making progress with my core, I do the plank. It's well worth it, though, even if you're doing a modified version. Anyway, see you on the C25K thread! Oh, and that DH is a sweetie!
Tiger Lily: Take care of that stomach. Around here, there's a lot of illness going around that knocks you out. As for the spinning, I think you can really set your own pace and are encouraged to do so.
Jeff: A little enforced taper, huh? I'll be looking forward to your race report on the Great Aloha Run.
MouseDave: I hope you're doing well in the photo contest! :)
Lisa: I can tell the challenge will be good for me in the long run; there may be a few days in the beginning when I curse your name, but don't take it personally. (I'm a bit sore today). On the up side, I now know that bird dog is the name of that move. I learn something new here every day! And I hope you're feeling better, and that your fever has broken. Take care.
Carrie: Thanks for the info--not an ice girl myself, although have been called an ice queen and a frigid, um, witch. More important, though:  I'm glad your aunt is okay, but I'm so sorry that you were under such stress. I hope the rest of this week goes better.
Beth: :woohoo: on the 4 miles & finding the challenge motivating. The panda, he done good, didn't he?
WWDave: I hope your dental appointment went as well as could be hoped for. Take care of yourself.
Howard: And yet strangely, your description makes me want to try a polar bear plunge....:rotfl:
Allie: Like everyone else says, the speed will come. Just don't let your desire for speed interfere with the pleasure in what you're accomplishing! And welcome to the world of the tortoise--we're slow, but steady & determined.
Judy: I'm glad to hear your new orthotics sound like they'll work for you. Congrats on registering for the 1/2!
Jen: How did your lunchtime workout turn out? I'm glad you're thinking of volunteering; DH and I are considering it, once we sort out our schedules.
Steve: Your words about new experiences & goals was very eloquent! The Penguin would be proud!
Bill: Maybe the university campus police were jealous of your legs?
laughinplace1999: I'm slow, too! Just think of all the endurance we're building! :goodvibes
JeninGA: What a great anecdote! (And I do think that was a speedy 5K.) You would have smoked me!
Stephanie: I hope you have a very short illness. The Pgh area has been hit pretty hard by that same "non specific viral illness" and it's no fun. Take care of yourself.
Shan: I'm sooo glad you didn't lose your engagement ring. I KNOW how painful that can be (long story). Another hill runner! You folks are intense, as intense as those hills!
Leana: Good to hear you're out and running again!
Blizzard: Nothing like a little treadmill miles to help you get over post-WDW depression! I definitely think you should plan the EE race as motivation and reward for your efforts.
As for me: I'm feeling better today. Thanks to everyone who sent me PD and well wishes. Today was an hour of strength training and flexibility exercises, so no mileage. I meant to sneak in some light walking today, but instead I took a nap. I traveled many miles in my sleep--do they count? ;)
DH is reporting high numbers of absences due to illness in all his college classes, up to 1/3 of his students, so something is making the rounds around here. (Not that college students ever just skip classes....) I just hope he doesn't catch what I have, because if there's anyone who gets crankier than I do if he gets ill and needs to miss workouts, it's DH. If he does get sick, though, I'll be able to use the same pep talk he gave to me this weekend: "Get your narrow white butt out of bed and into the gym!" (Hey, it worked for me! He called my butt narrow!)

AmyBeth- How do I do the plank if I can not put my palms flat on the floor? I have a cyst on the back of my right hand (near the wrist) that makes it impossible to put my hands flat like that. I can't do cartwheels any more for the same reason. (don't cha wish you were there when I figured that one out?)
not sure, but that is some image...
I agree - its the only way I can even attempt a plank - hope its not to confusing, but The "You on a Diet" doctors have a "real age" website with a workout video that shows how to do the planks!! (you have to sign up on the website to view - I've found it to be really helpful website!) its under the 20 min workout / fitness area http://www.realage.com/WorkoutCenter/fitness/fpEntry.aspx#fitDetail
"steady on the plank" click on that - and they will show you a picture of what AmyBeth just described!!

Every time I see something about a DLF, I think about my first 5K last year. I was speaking with my manager and said that I wanted to finish and I hoped I wouldn't be last. He said not to worry about being last because it's "nothing that a well timed elbow wouldn't fix". :lmao: He was joking of course and I would never do it, but I do laugh every time I think about it and it helps me get across the finish line. Whatever works, right. :)
I walked for 45 minutes yesterday and ran 2.85 miles in 30 minutes tonight. Tomorrow is some strength training.

Just wanted to stop in and say Hi. Hope eveyone is doing well. I'm back to a training schedule as I have a 1/2 in 4 weeks.

Good Evening!
Wow does this thread move. Trying to keep up may be a full time job.
Guess where I am... DISNEY! LOL!
I flew down this afternoon, had an office conference call and then went and jogged two miles in about 25 minutes. Not bad for me. I kind of cleaned up and headed to Epcot for a walk around World Showcase and then came back to deal with some more work issues.
Someone mentioned doing the EE Race. I think I am going to do that. Turns out I already have my annual F&W Fest trip booked for BCV that weekend so.... FATE!
:lmao:
Mailed the Half application today. The other half never has decided so he will just have to take his chances. I mailed from MCO so it should get there faster (maybe)
Did you know they have Yoga on the beach at the YC/BC? It's free from 7 to 8 tomorrow. I am going to "try" to go. I haven't really done Yoga since I moved from Nashville over two years ago so this should be fun!
Did all you SuperTuesday folks get out and vote. (I wore my GA Peach Voter sticker all day!)
Keep up the good work!:cool1:

Hi everyone. I was browsing on the "other" side of WISH and came across a thread where someone is asking for help as a beginner cyclist (http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1711791). Anyone who cycles have any tips they can offer, please stop over to the thread I've linked.
Robert, I've been thinking of you and hope you are doing well with your recovery.
Thanks for the spinning info. Oooh and the plank too. I usually just manage the forearm version. Haven't done so in quite a while. I bet I'll be starting over with that one too.
I'm am so busy with things I can't wait for a moment. (Remind me not to complain when I am home recovering from surgery next week.)

Wow is right this thread is moving right along these days. Its too hard to respond to everyone - I commend those that do - you guys are great!!
CarolA - Great to see you here and glad to hear you mailed your half application. Can't believe you are at Disney again - you lucky thing - its like you are always there. Did you get to hear Off Kilter yet?
Amy - How awesome we have our own "core" trainer. Thanks for passing on your knowledge. Now maybe once I get the hang of this running thing I will be able to work on my core. Do you have anything you would suggest for strengthening/stretching the lower legs?
Blizzard - Congrats on the TM purchase. I was on :cloud9: when I bought mine (wierd since I am known to HATE exercise!!) I am looking forward to the EE race as well. Me and my DH LOVE EE - we have been on it almost 25 times now. I think I have him talked into joining me as a team :woohoo: - hope to see you there!!
Shan - Glad you found your ring - I am sure you were worried sick!!
As far as me I ended up getting 2 miles in today and about an hour's worth of XT in so I am doing good!! My lower legs are still getting tight but I think they are getting better. It doesn't so much feel like my calves but my outer leg just below my knee are tight. I am thinking I need to stretch and strengthen. I know with training and time I will get past it (I really learned my lesson about taking time off - since I haven't been actively training for anything since TOT :scared1: - now I know I can't really go weeks on end without running.
I might meet up with the local running group that I just joined for a fun run tomorrow evening. Maybe it will help having others to run with - I am just worried that they are all front of the packers and I am definately middle to back of the pack!! I may end up in their dust!!

Evening all!
Just a quick pop in tonight...
Some great info on the plank, thanks. I keep meaning to go to the yoga class at the gym but seems they're always at odd times.
Got in some good XT this eve. Feeling good tonight. Like others have said, if it wasn't for the competition I may have just come home (icky weather) but have to keep at it!
Kudos to everyone with your own workouts and hoping those of you not feeling great (recovery, flu, etc) are doing better real soon.

Hello gang!
Everyone - good job on keeping up the training in all the lousy weather!
Jen - I think I'd love to hear some of the sayings that come up in your house! Lenna sure does keep us entertained around here :goodvibes
Bill - did you tell the Campus Police "don't Tase me, bro' "???
My Garmin has apparently recovered back to normal, and was kind to me today. I did my 45 min and got 4.05 miles out of it, not too bad I think, as I ended up with 10:30 avg mile, something I don't get very often (yay!) :cloud9:
Oh, hey - I found out the trick to breaking in new shoes...wear 'em as weekend shoes for a few days around town first. That made a HUGE diff!!
So, I work for the YMCA as a Network Manager, and I go to the Fitness branches several times a week here to work on various stuff. Can I get miles/minutes just for the honor of being there??
Mel looked really great (hot) rolling around the floor just now with the giant ball & weights doing XT....maybe you had to be there....:rolleyes1
Hope all you SuperTuesday-State folks got a chance to vote today.
See ya!

Every time I see something about a DLF, I think about my first 5K last year.
Always research your first race! I had my first 5K all planned and sprained my ankle a week before so I quickly signed up for the next one without looking at the website too hard. It was the Mississippi State Championships! The gun went off and it was like I was standing still. However, I did finish and I did not have to elbow anyone to keep from being last.
But you don't have one under 1 along with the 4 yo. Just the small trips to Disney can be a major undertaking on how to keep them quiet for 5 minutes. :lmao:

Tricks to car rides with kids? Ask Cruella!
no sugar for 2 days prior. Buy lots of those tiny water bottles. Have lots of no sugar snacks available. (When they were little I made Cheerio necklaces for them to eat for breakfast, they make them themselves now) Feed them constantly.
I usually hide their DS's (gameboys) for a few weeks prior to the trip and they miraculously appear about the time the kids get restless.
We pack picnic lunches and eat at rest stops so the kids can run around and they won't hound us for sugar or be tempted by soda.
Ear plugs work nicely too. They block the worst of the noise but you can still hear enough.
We also get books on tape from the library. These are much better than movies because they have to be quiet to hear or they miss stuff. We taught our 2 and 3rd child to use a CD player with earphones by 18 months.

GOOD MORNING TEAM
Sorry this is a total drive by :car: I have been reading the posts this week just haven't had time to respond to everyone. I am working on a big proposal at work for a new marina in Clearwater that is due on Friday, and if we get it I can FINALLY get the heck out of this office and build something.
Just wanted to report on my training;
Monday - rest
Tuesday - Body Pump (weights) & Body Flow (yoga/tai chi/pilates)
Wednesday - got up REALLY early this morning and ran 4 @ 10min pace :yay:
HUGE DEAL FOR ME!!!! I never run in the morning
but I am having such a hard time fitting it in I decided heck
with it I would try to get up and do it and I DID!!!!
Gotta get back to that project.

Angie - Way to go on teh mronign run. For me to do that with Scott, I'd have to get up before 3 am. Yeah, not gonna' happen. Good luck with that proposal! It's about time you don that hard hat!
I did my yoga last night. Was heavenly and my legs have sotpped aching. Odd that they now ache if I miss Monday's run and I ran on SUnday this week! Scary.

It was pretty bad last night. There are 7 deaths and millions in damage withing 30 miles of us. Many more deaths and damage just south of us in Tenn. We just got strong winds and have some trees down.
Thanks for asking Vic.

Prayers being said for all in the south central area of the US. I woke up this morning to see the reporters in Jackson, TN where my mom used to live. Thankfully she is now in NC. Hopefully no one on our team was affected by the devestating storms.
As for me I might end up going to run with the local running club (would be my first run with them since I joined last Friday) The lady from the club emailed me back and said they normally do 5 miles but some do just over 3 miles and if I can't run the entire way there are walkers so I can walk. Its just a little intimidating. I really want to go tonight just so I can scope out the location of the race on Sunday. LOL

Debra Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to look into these.
This thread moves so fast it's hard to keep up---especially with a busy toddler at home. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions on how to do a proper plank. Although, I can say that having a 30 pound toddler sit on your back while trying to do one adds a bit of a challenge. It puts new meaning on the phrase "Walk the plank". I would not recommend it. However, it's considerably easier than trying to do push ups while he's on my back. :scared1: Four miles on the treadmill for me last night. Today's a pilates day. Have a great day all.

Tricia: Good luck with your running club run tonight!!! :) I know it can be intimidating, but just think that you may make some new running buddies!
Panda Dave: Glad you are safe! But wow...how scary...all that devastation and heartbreak so nearby where you live. :sad2:
Carrie: Glad yoga is going so well for you!!! :goodvibes
Angie: WOW awesome week of exercise thus far. Congrats on a great run.
Jeff: THANK YOU for the Runners World info! So even bad weather in Hawaii? Nice to be able to run by the ocean though....:cloud9: .
So wow....I'm REALLY worn out. In the past 3 days I've taken 2 advanced level pilates classes, taught 5 Pilates classes, ran and taken an hour spin class. I'm not sure I can keep up this schedule. :guilty: I got a deep tissue massage today and it was incredibly painful. The therapist said I'm a mess. That's always encouraging. I think my body is rebelling LOL! I don't have any rest days built into my schedule due to teaching so many classes (I know...that's not good). But a rest day means missed cardio XT :(.
Anyway..the good news is that I didn't either DIE or fall off the bike during spin today. :thumbsup2 I actually loved the class. Yes it was definitely hard work, but I think it will be so beneficial as XT. I finished with a puddle of sweat under the bike (sorry yuck...tmi)....but my legs actually felt pretty good. It should help keep me cycling fit so I can begin riding outside again once the weather warms up here in the north.

Hi everybody!
Man this thread just flies now-a-days. I do read it, but just can't keep up with responding to everyone. I apologize!
I got out today in the wind and did 5 miles. Yesterday I was a slacker and skipped it. I was just so tired; I came home from work and did not-much-of-anything.
Angie - So glad you're doing so well! Take care of that back!!
Amy - Yikes! Please make sure to give your body time to recover. Otherwise it may demand some time off in the form of an injury. (That's the mom in me coming out, I guess.)
We are scheduled to get that line of storms this evening/tonight but hopefully they've fallen apart a bit. Prayers to any/all WISHers affected!
Happy training!

Hey, everybody, just popping in before I leave work. Happy Hump Day! I have 3.5 miles on tap for tonight, I had planned on running (my plan is to run the shorter mileage and walk longer stuff on the weekends), but I was boxing up old invoices today at work and now my back is burning, so I think I will walk instead! I just checked weather.com and it's supposed to be 46 with a slight chance of showers at 6:00, so I hope that holds true--I can't stand the thought of being on the TM tonight, but I will suffer for my little Bunnies!! Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!!

Hey, everyone! Just stopping in real quick to congratulate everyone who is getting the steps in. I, too, am keeping all our WISHers in the storm areas in my thoughts and prayers.
No exercise to report here. Should have gone to the gym Monday night while I had an extra hour, but took care of some other stuff instead. Ended up really sick with flu symptoms by bedtime and it's been really ugly since then. Can't believe I missed 2 days of work. And I can't even remember the last time I passed out before Tuesday morning. Hoping to be back to par by the weekend.
Just wanted to send a shoutout to my sweet DH, Howard, whose picture appears in the Bloodbank of Delmarva's Bloodlines this month with an article singing his praises for finishing the Goofy. Love you, honey! :lovestruc

Well I made it through my first run with my running group. It was kinda wierd because I basically ran by myself (I have a really wierd pace - or make that no pace at all - I run for a bit then I walk then I run then I walk - but in no particular pace) I normally don't run at night but I felt ok because there were others out there. I ended up doing 3.8 miles - more than I expected to do so I am happy. I talked to a few people and got info on the race on Sunday so I don't feel as nervous about that. When I got done running I was talking to a man in the group and I told him where I turned around and he was saying it was almost 2 miles (I thought he meant there and back was almost 2 miles and I KNEW it was more than that) then I found out it was almost 4 so I assume he means almost 2 miles one way. He had me scared there for a minute.

Just a hello or two, then I'm off to touch base on my other DIS commitments. Wow, there have gotten to be so many, how am I supposed to make any miles/minutes for the challege? (Don't worry, Ohana, I'm just throwing a red herring at the Panda--I hear they like fish.)
CarolA: I'm so jealous that you got to run at Disney! Let along walk around WS.
Shan: The ring experience. Let's just say "lost" is a euphemism for "stolen" by movers, my first (and only) bad experience in Pittsburgh. As you might have guessed, I'm not a hugely sentimental person and definitely not a crier, but I was in tears on and off for two weeks. The upside of the story, and there is one because I have the best partner in the world: DH surprised me with another ring, as close as he could get to the original in size, color, cut, etc.. (He knew I wouldn't want an "upgrade"--I just wanted my ring). But I still haven't forgiven myself, even though blaming myself is irrational and unproductive.
Tricia: I'm so glad it sounds like you're getting comfortable with your running group. I'm not a consistent pace person, so I know joining one would make me self-conscious. Good job on the miles, too!
Jeff: Aw, you can't tell us how hot Mel looks without sharing pics! My imagination isn't that good!
Angie: Congratulations on the early a.m. run. It sounds like it left you pumped!
Tracey: I can't even imagine the added challenge. Hey, though, I bet he'll enjoy yoga! And I know he's more flexible than I am!
Amy: Please take care of yourself! That's quite a load you're carrying.
Cam: I hope you're feeling better!  And way to go, Howard!
Bill: Thanks for the tip on the safety pins. My best works just fine with our WISH shirts, but tends to slip with my tech ones. I'll give the safety pins a try.
To our South-Central WISHers: My thoughts are with you! Take care! :lovestruc
As for me: I'm not 100% back to running, but feeling good enough to call myself recovered. I worked out at the gym today--but cut the TM short because of breathing problems and substituted XT. This evening was so warm, though, that I waited for a break in the rain & did some walking. I managed to do 3.4 miles @ 14:42mm; of course, that was split into two legs, as I got caught in a 10 minute downpour. But I was just so glad to be outside....:yay: I like the Pgh winter, but it sure does rain a lot.

Hey everyone! I'm trying desparately to catch up on this thread, but it's not really working... DH and I were in Texas for a few days, and now that we are home, little Timmy has a stomach virus. I think (hope) Timmy is over the worst of it. Life has been crazy, but I'm really hoping to get back into a routine tomorrow. I really have no training to report. The doc did some x-rays to rule out a stress fracture on my foot, and found a bone spur??? I haven't had a chance to do much research so I really don't know what that is, but basically she said to rest, stretch, and take advil. But, I did sign up for the Danskin Tri today - YEA!!!! Biking and swimming are not a problem with my foot, so I'm hoping to do that while "resting". :thumbsup2
I'm off to catch up on the thread. Keep up the great work!!! Happy training!!!

An American tourist in London decides to skip his tour group and explore the city on his own. He wanders around, seeing the sights, occasionally stopping at a quaint pub to soak up the local culture, chat with the locals, and have a pint of bitter.
After a while, he finds himself in a very nice neighbourhood with big, stately residences. No pubs, no stores, no restaurants and, worst of all, no public restrooms.
However, after all those Guinnesses, he really has to go. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the adjacent buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his problem.
As he is unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a London bobby, who says, "Sir, you simply cannot do that here, you know."
"I'm very sorry, officer," replies the American, "but I really have to go, and I just can't find a public restroom."
"Ah, yes," said the bobby, "just follow me".
He leads the American through a back delivery alley to a gate, which he opens.
"In there," points the bobby, "whiz away sir, anywhere you like."
The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, statuary, fountains, sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in perfect bloom. Since he has the policeman's blessing, he relieves himself and feels much more comfortable.
As he goes back through the gate, he says to the bobby, "That was really decent of you. Is that what you call English hospitality?"
"No, sir." replied the bobby. "That is what we call the French Embassy."

Good Morning Everyone!
The sunrise this morning was absolutely incredible. I sat on my front porch with my cup of coffee and watched for close to thirty minutes. A day that starts like that has got to be a great day! I am now inspired to make the most of this beautiful day!
Amy - BE CAREFUL! I thought I was fine adding a little more cross training but after my regular run on Tuesday, my body rebeled.
Larab - I want to hear how you like Bonnet Creek - we are staying there at Thanksgiving. I think Robert's site - Disneyrunning.com has some places to run at WDW.

Hey kids!
I ran 3 (slow) miles last night! I was a bit sluggish starting off, but for the first time since the marathon, my stupid IT band didn't start throbbing. I was starting to wonder if I'd ever be able to run again, or if I peaked with Goofy!;)It was nice being back in my routine.
Hope everyone is doing well!

Good Morning Everyone!
Hope everyone came through the storms OK. I used to live in Memphis and they can be strong there. (Of course I finally got hit in Nashville. House was fine, but my car.... took MONTHS to get it put back togehter! The tornado went from the parking lot behind our office, jumped OVER the building and hit the park in front of us.... REALLY LUCKY!)
I never did get to the Yoga on the Beach at BC/YC. I guess 7 am on vacation just didn't get it for me.:rotfl2:
I did get up and do about 2.5 miles this morning. I used the 2.4 mile course on www.Disneyrunning.com and added some to it hoping it was 2.5 miles. Probably pretty close. I think it was about 35 minutes which isn't bad for me. I did buy a Timex with a stop watch, but had some techinical difficulties.... (Plus I had to stop and strech my calfs!)
I have to strech more. When I was doing this last year, the guys at the running shop gave me some streches that really helped my calfs... Got to get back to them. Plus I think my shoes are shot. I have a new pair that I have been wearing on the TM, but I wanted to keep them 'clean' Guess it's time to get over that!
I am checking out of my room at BCV in about 50 mintues. Have a quick call with the office at 11 and then I am heading back to World Showcase for a few hours before I fly home.
(Yes, Tricia, I saw Off Kilter, great as usual. I posted on the mega thread!)
For those of you doing Peachtree, keep watching. They are really clueless. I mean how many places can deal with 55,000 at the start and have a suitable ending spot exactly 10K later!!! Personally I think as soon as we finish this race we should all go to Piedmont and WALK on the Grass (GASP) I mean it's a PARK not a museum!!!!
Everyone keep up the good work!

Everyone that's interested in ordering the RaceReady shirts, please check the eye2eye thread. We have a design team working on a new proposal and I want to make sure everyone has a chance to take a look before I start processing the RaceReady orders. I'd like to have RR in by Feb 15 to get the shirts in time to train for Minnie, but folks might be interested in doing the eye2eye and want to give everyone time to decide.

Has anyone heard from MelR, Stephanie or Susie in Arkansas? Do we have anyone in TN?
Mel--thanks for thinking of me! We were actually spared most of the bad weather. Only had severe thunderstorms in our area. Susie lives much closer to where the big one hit--but I think her actual town was spared.
I'm still hanging around, but have been really sick this week. I've been laid up in bed since Monday afternoon. I think today I'm gonna beat this thing. But since I've had very little sleep and very little to eat in the past few days I"m still very weak. Off to go find a nice quiet nap spot.

Lara: Chimera and I like to run at Port Orleans resort. There's a path that goes all along the the Sassagoula River and through French Quarter and Riverside, really beautiful run, and about 4 miles, I think. We also like to run from Old Key West along the river to Downtown Disney; I think that was a 6-mile loop.
BIll: Thanks for the tip on the velcro belt. I'm going to check out one that Fuel Belt makes & see if that does the trick.
See y'all later,

Stacey: Take care of yourself. I found myself napping, if sleeping HOURS at a time in the middle of day counts as a nap.

I did my Leslie Sansone Walk Away The Pounds 2 Mile DVD tonight.
I know I asked about this quite awhile ago, and people said I should not count her DVDs as XT since it's "walking." I think I am going to count it as XT from here on out though. Yes, it is walking (in place). But it's also kicks, kick backs, knee lifts and upper body with the stretchie band. I know my legs (and arms) are sore after one of her DVDs in a way they are not sore after a long walk! And man, does she make me sweat!

I think we should go ahead with the Race Ready shirts as well. It looks like with the eye2eye, we can order anytime we want so people can add them later if they want to. As long as it is a bright lime green, I figure that anyone can see it from any distance.
... And man, does she make me sweat!

Timmy is feeling better, well at times. He still wants to snuggle quite a bit as well and we will do our best to accomidate that especially since it may not last too much longer.

Jeff, I've got the Helium fuelbelt and it doesn't come undone for sure. I just ordered DH one for Valentine's Day. I also went ahead and got him an extra pocket to slide on the belt. The one that comes with it is small, the medium size accommodates power bars and my camera actually fits inside it well. The small pocket a gel would fit, but my cell just barely does.

Good morning, team!!! Happy Friday!! :goodvibes I am happy to report I have a very sore bum today, I biked 10 miles on the stationary bike last night and I am feeling it! ::yes::
Mel--I prefer the Race Ready shirts too, the eye2eye are just a little too much for me. I'll head over to the thread and place my order.
Kristi--I would definitely count your Leslie Sansone videos, I have never done any of her's, but my Mom does them and they are hard work! For that matter I have done Sweatin' to the Oldies to count as xt in the past, you definitely do work up a sweat!
Stephanie--I hope you are feeling better soon!!!!! :wizard:
Deborah--What part of the 'burgh are you in? We have family in the Butler/Cranberry/Mars area. Sorry about your engagement ring, that's terrible!!
Jen in GA--Be careful with your IT band! I am the queen of IT band injuries, whenever I re-injure mine it takes a good 2-3 months to heal itself. Try walking instead of running, it will take a lot of pressure off of your IT band and lift weights, especially leg curls and leg extensions, that is the best preventative thing you can do to fight off injury. Good luck!! :wizard:
Bill and Lynnda--I hope little Timmy is feeling better!!! Say hi to my buddy Bill for me. :)
 to everyone I missed! Have a great day, team!

No training to report here. I have to go to a pep rally at DD's school (it's a K-12 school; they have interested elementary kids do a few cheers/dances). I just realized it lasts from 1:00-2:45! That is so wrong! Then we have to go to the game tonight... :scared1: I can't begin to explain how strange it is that any child of mine would be interested in cheerleading...:rolleyes1 Maybe I can swing in a quick workout between all the spectating.
Krista- Thanks for your voice of reason! I used to go to the gym 4-5 times/week, but when I started increasing my mileage for Goofy I couldn't deal with the TM and stopped going. I need to go back and do the weights and some cross training. I know that lack of XT is one of my major weaknesses. I'm so bad about getting in a rut.
I'm so impressed with anyone who runs at Disney (well, when they're not in an actual race). I've told myself I was going to run on many trips, and I have yet to do it. I have done a few extra walks early in the mornings, but I'm usually walking to gift shops/bakery, so I don't think they count.:rolleyes1

It's still raining here in the islands. It's been close to a month of rain at our house, ever since returning from the Goofy Race and a Half. Is this what Seattle is like (LOL)?
There was flash flooding and funnel cloud yesterday out on the West side of the island in Kapolei. Traffic was a mess on top of all that rain.
Oahu and Kauai are getting a break from the heavy stuff today. The Big island, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai continue to get drenched. Weather reports say we're in for more of this next week. I've been dodging raindrops, BIG RAINDROPS, and puddles all week.
I had a terrible run yesterday. No energy or gas in the tank for a 5 miler, must not have had enough pasta this week (LOL). Oh well, at least I got out and moving.
Aloha everyone, and have a great weekend!

Hi Team..
Hawaii Jeff: That's just wrong...it shouldn't rain in Hawaii ;). Sorry to hear that the weather isn't cooperating there either. Sounds like a nation wide problem!
Carrie, Mel, Kate: I know the shirt design and order deal is kind of sticky right now...just wanted to say that we do appreciate you guys for taking the time to volunteer and get the shirts out there for discussion. As with everything, I'm sure it's a little time-consuming! Thanks! :goodvibes
Jen Ga: WOW...1:45 pep rally LOL! Good luck with that ;). Take care of that IT band. Ditto to what Krista said...it's a tough injury that is easily aggrivated. Don't push too hard too soon!
Krista: You rock girl! 10 miles on the bike. I think I was so much lazier when I was pregnant!!!
Tigger Jeff: I have the Fuel Belt (not helium..old school style)...and the velcro works like a charm. I love it :). Very very comfy too IMO. Prior to that I used the Ultimate Direction bottle/pack and it was good except it loosened up over time so I was constantly tightening it during the long runs.
Stephanie: So glad you guys are ok. I hope you're feeling better soon...sounds like a nasty virus you guys had!!!! :sad2:
:( PD to MelR and Susie: Hope you guys are ok!!!
OK...so I taught another class this morning. I actually think I have an overuse injury in my right arm :(. That's a huge problem with all the demonstrating I have to do for plank, push-ups, weights, etc. Ugh! Lots of discomfort in both my elbow and shoulder. Oh well...such is life. AT LEAST it's not my leg!!!! This was a huge week of training for me....I put a lot of time in Pilates, Yoga, Cycling, X-C Ski Machine. Unfortunately...my running miles aren't as good. I hope the better weather will help with that. Great job getting the steps in....AND the XT in. Everyone is doing well.

" This has been a wild week. A tornado hit in Atkins, Arkansas which is around 10 miles from my home. A lot of damage was done and several people were killed including one of Steve's co-worker's brother. Really sad. Today, I saw the funeral procession for a family that was killed. Really, really sad.
We had some major roof damage as did several of our neighbors. Also, lots of trees and power lines knocked down. Luckily, our power did not go out. We've been busy this week cleaning up debris and cleaning up a little rent house we have that sustained some minor flooding. What a mess. However, we're alive and doing great. I can't complain."

Otherwise, I have also done 3 more hours worth of weight training. I don't really understand how the whole mathmatics works out but I will keep the cardio up and even increasing my daily and weekly totals.

First, thank goodness that Susie/Steve's family is safe. My heart and thoughts go out to the region and all affected by this.
Krista: Thanks for the kind words--I'm almost over the engagement ring, just a trace of bitterness left for a lifetime. :lmao: We're renting a place in the Frick Park/Regent Square area right now (Edgewood/Swissvale, although we hang out in Squirrel Hill). I don't know where we'll end up buying eventually, as there are soooo many cool neighborhoods. We like the Squirrel Hill/Shadyside/university area, but not sure our wallet does! And a big whoo-hoo for your 10 miles, even if I don't know quite what to make of your appreciation for a sore bum (naughty joke being suppressed here...).
Tigger Jeff: Dadgum?? :rotfl: Oh, and welcome to my pace.
Jen in GA: Hey, if your DD sticks with it, could she end up going to Disney for those cheerleading competitions? That would be cool, I think. Take care of that ITB.
Aloha Jeff: A month of rain? Wow, and I thought Pgh was rainy. on the five miler. But you're right, you did it! How are you feeling about the upcoming race?
Amy: Take care of your arm. I would imagine that it causes a great deal of discomfort/pain even with the smallest tasks. :scared1:
Shan: Great run, great pace! Take care of those knees.
Bubba: WTG on the 20 miles and 3 hours of weight training! Good progress!
As for me: I'm officially on the mend. Today was the first day I was able to pick up with C25K and breathe, if not easily, then without heart-stopping scariness! :woohoo: That means I can trade off some of my time on that dadgum--love it, Tigger Jeff--elliptical for some foot-stomping goodness.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to pop in say thanks for the well wishes and concerns. Fortunately, as I told Anne, we were lucky in that we only had roof damage and some minor flooding from the storms last Tuesday. However, we know several families that weren't as lucky and it's been hard for them and many others in the area. I want to encourage everyone who is new to regular exercise to consider doing a few 5K races in their local area this year. That way you can get the rookie mistakes out of the way and when you go to Disney, your race experience will be even better.

Dave- loving the competition. My last two runs wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been motivated by the competition. I'm getting ready to head out the door in a few minutes so I can get at least 3 miles in for today. Same motivation. It's great for those of us who don't have a training schedule for a race right now.:thumbsup2

Mel - Would it be possible to add the link to the spreadsheet that Darcey did to track everyone's miles & times in the Team Challenge Game to the first page of the weekly threads? Here is teh link:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=p2mSDyx16nAzm4ETNTavrTg&hl=en
I think it would make it easier for everyone to find.
Thanks!

Anne - Thank you for letting us know Susie was ok.
Susie - Glad you found a minute to post & that you are ok.

Has anyone heard from MelR yet?

The hours/miles team competition is definitely helping me. The motivation of helping the team out is working!

Panda - The game is definitely motivating me. There've been several times when I wanted to roll over and go back to sleep, but I knew I needed the minutes for the team! (And I get double credit - we're doing a similar challenge at work that pays CASH at the end of the year!)
Susie - Glad you're okay!
DH has informed me that he wants to do a half with me. Looks like we're doing the Crystal Coast in Morehead City in March after all. That means I can't slack anymore, so I went out and did 10 with the group this morning, then came home and took the dog out for 2 more so I could claim 12 for the day!

I'm enjoying the challenge Dave.
When I click on the team stats link I am asked for a password.
Anne, thank you for posting from Susie. I do know it is certainly a terrifying experience. Prayers for all everyone there.
MSDave, more lime green stuff! OMG! I might have to get something like that for DH for winters here. Often he complains about wrist coldness and I think these "arm gaiters" would be just the thing for him! I'm sure he would LOVE the color choice too!
;)
Karen, good question. Is anyone connected to MelR that can let us know she is ok.

Amy – please take it easy with that arm. You do need it for running, too, sweetie!! ;)
Krista – I thought of you this morning when I saw a beautiful pregnant woman (~ 5 months, I’d guess) walking on a treadmill, looking very content and fit. :cool1:
Susie – I am so glad to hear you and your family are safe. I’m sorry for what you and your friends and neighbors are going through. Sending you huge hugs!
Anne --Thank you for passing along Susie’s message. :goodvibes
Bubba – Congrats on all the awesome activity you are getting in this week!
Debra – so glad you are feeling better! :cutie:
Hawaii Jeff – WISHing you lots of :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:
MSDave – those are just wayyy too awesome!! If I thought I’d EVER actually train in the bitter cold, I’d NEEEDDD them. But alas, I am a TM junkie.
Jackie -- :woohoo: on inspiring your DH!!! That is just awesome! I am so impressed that you went out and did 10 this morning!
After being down with the flu for much of this week and even missing two days of work  (those of you who remember my “new case” will realize that missing work for me just is NOT an option!!!), I did get to the gym this morning.
I hit a new PR on the TM – 4.35 miles in 1 hour!!! :woohoo: I am soooo excited! Last weekend, I had hit a new PR of 4.19 miles in an hour, so kicking it up a bit and seeing the monitor read 60:00 and 4.35 felt so good!! I also did a relaxed hour on the bike (only 9.35 miles there), but in two hours I burned about 730 calories. Now, what to eat? ;)

Question for everyone. How do you like the miles/hours game? Do you think it's helping you stay motivated?
Since you asked...
I love that the game has me motivated.
I know I would not have gotten out there probably even half the time this past week if I didn't have my team counting on me.
But, I do not like how it is splintering everyone. I miss my fun-loving WISH group on the main thread. :sad1:
I understand this group has gotten huge and I know things have to, and will change.
That doesn't mean I have to like it. ;)
On a training note - I did 75 mins. of fitness yoga this morning.

My workout today...
3.1 miles at a 10.09 pace.
1.0 miles on the Cross-Trainer.
I feel good! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :woohoo:
Just a warning, classes begin for me on Monday. Although you don't see much of me now, you'll see even less of me for the next 3.5 to 4 months. I will be with you in WISH Spirit though and want you to all keep training hard in my absence. By the time the Minnie rolls around I will be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Be good and don't do anything I wouldn't do while I'm gone. :upsidedow

Hey everybody!
I have not been posting much lately. It is really busy at work this week - I'm an admissions director at a private school, and this is the height of the admissions season! Crazy busy - lots of extra meetings etc. - but all good.
I managed to get a nasty cold yesterday, but got out for a short run anyway. It's worse today, so I'm canceling my planned cross-training and just taking it easy. I made the mistake of commenting that "Boy, everyone else is getting sick and I've been so healthy!" thereby jinxing myself! Hopefully this will pass soon. I'm pretty sure it's just a cold, and not the nasty flu that some of the kids/teachers in the school have gotten.
I'm really loving being part of the team! I have signed up for a mid-April 5K (the Clean Air Run) which will be my first official race. I'm looking forward to it - I'm almost up to 5K in my runs at a respectable 12.5 minute pace.
I'm sending prayers & hugs out to those of you affected by last week's tornadoes.
Take care!

WWDave - :lmao: Sorry the link is crashing your laptop. I did notice that it sometimes takes a bit to load.
Lily - You do have to create a username/password to log into google to view the spreadsheet. It won't let you make changes to the spreadsheet, only view it. It also tells you who else is viewing it at the same time.
SWDave - Love the arm warmers
Cam - Glad you are feeling better
Kristi - I totally agree....I like the motivation, don't like how it is splitting us up so much. :confused3
:wizard: To those that are sick and/or injured
Sorry to those I've missed. Brain isn't functioning to well at the moment.
I was supposed to do 5 miles today but the weather wasn't co-operating so ended up on the TM at the gym. Did 1 hour & ended up with 4.3 miles including the warm-up. Since Minnie training doesn't officially start for me until Monday, I figured the 4.3 was close enough. :rolleyes1
Have a GREAT weekend!

I need a few more game players if anyone is interested?????
I want to play, I want to play!!! I've been feeling left out now that the teams are up and running--all the active threads seem to be team things.
So add me to the list. I'll be glad to do my part.
