Greetings from south of the House of Mouse,
It's official. My parents will be joining SO and I for a trip to WDW in August, 2008. It will be their first since 1977. We've discussed camping at the Fort for this trip but they are giving it second thoughts on account of they, being of the northern persuasion, are not used to Florida in August (meanwhile, I've been living in Florida for nearly 10 years and I'm still not used to Florida in August, but I digress). We would be tent camping and we have fans to bring with us. Will the heat/humidity be that unbearable that we will be wishing we had booked at All Stars or Pop Century?

In a word...YES!!! August is hot! Maybe it's just me but I don't see just a fan(s) being any help. Especially after being in the parks all day. I know the Fort has a pool but you can't sleep there.

Although I'll be there in August too..... I being of the Northern persuasion also would not be there without AC. I find that being able to actually sleep is a very pleasurable aspect of a vacation, and contributes greatly to the happy interactions that the rest of my family has with me. As others can point out and attest to .... I use AC "for the children". ;)
Now if you're tenting, you can still get AC into your tent and help your parents survive (At least during the night)... Some people on this board are very resourceful and I have seen pictures of tents with window AC's... and portable AC's.....

We camp in our motorhome. Sorry!
HOWEVER if I were going to tent camp, I would find myself a cheap Walmart Air Conditioner and use it during the night. I know the motorhome has an AC that can nearly freeze us out most of the time. However when we went to FtW for two weeks around 4th of July, that sucker worked hard to barely cool the rig down during the heat of the day. Thankfully at night without the sun beating down, we had comfy temps again.
Call me spoiled but I cannot sleep if I am hot and sweaty. AND no sleep means a miserable vacation. :teacher:

Yes. I would not place your parents in FW in a tent in August. Obviously living in Florida you aware of the heat. Your parents not being used to it, I think will find that unbearable. I think tent camping with the afternoon thunderstorms and any possible flooding due to that would not be an enjoyable trip. Personally, I'm not an airconditioning "freak"..I like it comfortable but not cold..but a fan in August would just be blowing a lot of hot humid air around. Not much of a vacation for them.

Walmart has a 500btu window unit A/C for 96.00.....just wrap some material around the front of it making a tube to your tent, cut a small(but large enough) hole in the side of your tent and velcro the tube around the hole on the inside of your tent. Place the window unit on something like a milk crate with a wedge under the a/c in the front so that its leaning back a little for the condensation run off. Cheap and effective....much like me.
