I just want to start by saying that I think it's great that people like to put up memorial/holiday yard displays. There is nothing wrong with it in my book. However, there are some folks out there that just have NO sense about it. By that I mean, they do a really bad job and it looks super tacky. There is a particuarly colorful little old lady that lives in a nearby neighborhood. I pass by her house almost everyday on my way to work. She decorates for just about every major holiday and then some. I have decided to share with you the displays in hopes that they will be a guide for What NOT to do to your lawn!
The first display erected in 2008 is for Martin Luther King, Jr's holiday. I know the holiday was last Monday, but I was only able to get the photos over the weekend. From the road, it's clear that there is something just not quite right about "MLK" standing there. What I mean is, even from the road, you can see that the head has been painted brown and has PINK lips. That has been a source of a lot of giggles for me lately. MLK with bright pink lips.....OMG, not to be politically incorrect, but I think the man would prefer not to be remembered this way. You can see that the homeowner is quite proud of her displays and has put spotlights out, so that they can be "enjoyed" even at night.
http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7293yszWD/1089531.jpg
Ok, now, if that wasn't bad enough from a distance, I went in for the "head shot" and OMG, just look for yourself......
http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7293yszWD/1089532.jpg
Did you see that? It's a FEMALE mannequin head! Not only did she paint a caucasian mannequin brown, she used a female head. Oh, and in case you couldn't tell from the top shot, there are no hands on this MLK either. She did use a safety pin to attach a hat to the sleeve of his jacket though. The wind has blown the pants out of the shoes, there are no legs or feet and of course the purple and black tie have been windblown too.
Ok, so, now you know how not to do an MLK day yard display. Until the next holiday, just remember.....just because you CAN put up a display in honor of a holiday, doesn't mean you SHOULD put up a display.
Update: The new and more respectful thread is found at http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1746195.

Her use of the caucasian maniquin head in "black face" to represent Martin Luther King was not well thought out (to put it mildly). It looks more like Barack Obama if you ask me.

I laugh still looking at these pictures. When I rode by her house this morning, only the flag remained up. I am guessing that the Valentine's Day display will be up soon. I will be sure to share it with you in all of it's  glory.

any update on the Valentines day display?
Yes, the pieces were starting to appear this morning. There are a couple of tables and some oh so festive archways that were up this morning. The whole thing was not up, but we had a little rain overnight, so I can only assume that she got more done today, since it was sunny. I will be sure to post  pics asap.

Ok, I have lots of editing to do in order to show off the latest version of the holiday celebration in Crazy Lady's yard. Corey had to take the pictures this time. I was literally :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao: so hard that I almost couldn't breathe. There are several mannequins in the yard now. I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say that she has combined Valentine's Day with another "Celebration" with results that you will have to see for yourself. I am at a loss for how to describe it still.
Oh, a couple of minor hints.....MLK's back, but with a new head and the original MLK pink lipped head is back and wearing a wig!

Are you ready for the Valentine's Day display? Are you sure? It's not for the faint of heart.
I will start with some basic photos that show some more traditional decorations.
Note: Address removed to protect the identity of the homeowner!

The fence has some new decorative heart lights...

She decorated a bench with teddybears and a pillow.....none of it's waterproof.

I saw that there were tables going up earlier this week. Soon, you will see who is coming to dinner!

Ok, I got a good giggle out of the Lip Lamp!
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/155152LipsTable.jpg
So, from the above, I hope that you can see some of the details that have been building throughout the past week. I have giggled my way to work each day as the pieces have been assembled. But, today, OMG, you will not believe what's coming next! Hang tight, more to come!

Well, as you can see Whitney has kicked Bobby to the curb for the ghost of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown!

So to the right of the yard, standing there are MLK, Jr. and Coretta. Notice the new noggin' on MLK. Also, you can see there is a rose in a vase on the table and a martini glass. I never took Dr. King for a drinker!
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/155152MLK-PartyTable.jpg
It was a windy day, but you can see that Coretta needs someone with a little more style to dress her!
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/15515210-MLK-N-Coretta4.jpg
Check out MLK's drawn on hair. Why oh why does she persist in giving MLK heads with drawn on hair?

Corey took the photos standing across the street. Luckily, we have a really great Kodak digital with a 3x optical and a 10x digital zoom. Seriously, I was in no shape to take the pictures because I was laughing so hard. Corey thinks that I am being too harsh on the little old lady and her tributes, but when asked, "Would you want to live next to her?" of course the answer is "NO!!!!!!" :rotfl: I do admit, there is a certain thrill in getting these photos. :thumbsup2 I have to share them with you guys, it's just too funny to not share.

Ok, this is the final table....Bill Cosby and Oprah decided to step out for the evening. I hope that their SO's didn't mind being left out of the evening.

Poor Bill's head.....at least it's not made out of puddin'.
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/15515207-BillCosby2.jpg
And Oprah, she's having a thin day and brought one of her dogs along. Unfortunately, it appears that Oprah's head was also a caucasian mannequin head to start with, but at least Crazy Lady's painting technique looks a little less obvious this time.
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/15515208-OprahwithDog.jpg
Well, folks, that's it until next time. I am sure that she will have a yard that is "Magically Delicious" next month since it will be time for St. Patty's Day.
Until then, please don't do this to your yard!

I am so glad that I was able to share a laugh with you. Yes, there are many things that are so very wrong with the displays. Her heart seems to be in the right place, but she just doesn't seem to understand how her well meaning gestures are completely missing the mark.

delurking to say this is absolutely hysterical! :rotfl:
crazy lady does seem to add entertainment value to your ride to work! It's obvious she puts a lot of thought into these displays.
I will say though, the HOA in my neighborhood can be a real pain in the tush but after viewing those photos, I'm kinda glad we have them around! Now if they could only do something about the hideously tacky stained glass window with a picture of a mermaid the people down the street put up over their front door I'd be happy. I called to complain and was told they fined them $25 because they did not have it properly approved. I asked if they planned to fine them $25 for every day it was still ugly?
Thanks for sharing the pics! I needed a good giggle!
Edited to add that I just noticed she has spotlights on Bill and Oprah! Too funny! Thoughtful of her to make sure her displays can still be properly appreciated at night. ;)

I doubt this little old woman even has internet. She is in her late 60's/early 70's, about 5' and about medium build. 02-14-2008, 09:56 AM
In all honesty, it has made me a bit paranoid. I'm not little or old or crazy or on your lane, but my DH said, do you think she knows she's on the internet (little crazy old lady)? He said, what if she has relatives that are on the dis? I said I don't think so, and anyway, it's all so sweet. THEN after I cleaned the cars off I started "shovelling" snow with the squeegee thingy and stopped dead when I realized someone could video me with their phone and post it! Wacko neighbor! This will make me more careful about anyting I do in public so in a way it is a cautionary tale and therefore has even more merit.

DDD, don't get all paranoid. Pushing snow off your car with a squegee thingy ( which BTW I have too...I have an SUV and pushing it off witht he squegee thingy is way easier than any other way of cleaning the car) is pretty "noirmal" behavior.
Painting mannequins different colors and displaying them on your front yard is a bit out there.

OMG! I thought I'd see pics of a lady's yard who looks similar to my mom's neighbor's yard, but this is just so much crazier! I love it!
Maybe you guys could surprise her, and secretly start decorating her yard at night.... Although I don't think you could find better decorations than the ones she has!
I think you should send those pictures to Ellen for her show. She has those crazy Japanese products all the time, and wierd stuff people send her. I'm sure she'd show these pictures - maybe even invite the lady on her show!

ELLEN would love that - can you imagine, esp with the Oprah and Bill Cosby. Ellen loves a good tacky display.
I promise I'm not paranoid, it was when I was using the window scraper to clean the front walk (just SO sick of the snow) that's when I stopped and thought, oh, this would look strange if someone were watching.

Please folks, let's keep her a DIS secret. That helps to preserve her feelings, which I can only imagine would be hurt if this were to make it to a larger audience. I have never met this woman, but let's face it, no one wants to be laughed at the way that we are laughing at her. Granted, her choices for lawn decoration are super tacky and way out there, but she is decorating her yard in a small neighborhood in the middle of the older part of the burbs. She has no idea that it's reached this large of an audience and I doubt that she would appreciate some/most of our reactions.
ConcK, I love ya, but if Ellen's people respond that they are interested in this rather than a simple acknowledgement of the initial giggle, send them to me. I would be forced to have a conversation with this woman, that I just don't want to have, but I would have to own up to my somewhat twisted interest in the displays, taking the photos, and my disrespectful posting of them. Isn't that is a joy killer? Not to mention the possible reaction that my admission could have. :sad2:

Maybe Ellen heard about her after all, and was there to pay her a visit!

Are lawn displays an American tradition?
In the UK the only times we decorate our houses are at Christmas and one or two people per street may light a pumpkin and decorate their window at Halloween.
I have never ever seen a display with manaquins but one day I hope too!
Maybe when I have a little more time on my hands I can be the UK version of 1 crazy lady!

It was like that for many years in the States -- plus American flags for Flag Day and the 4th of July -- but we seem to be spiraling out of control more and more. We had one crazy couple doing all the holidays in my town. Now Christmas and Halloween are standard for every third home and more and more people are doing Valentine's Day, Easter, St Patrick's Day, etc. However, the Crazy Lady featured in this thread is in a class all her own. The folks with a bunch of inflatables on their lawns can't compete!

This has Ellen written all over it...<g>:happytv:
<---slapping my hand though - I do suppose it would cause some hurt feelings and nobody wants to do that.
On the other hand, she might enjoy the celebrity.

Regarding the hint - is she using a bunch of frogs, or has she painted her mannequins green? :)

No, most American's do not decorate their lawns for all of the holidays. Most folks around here decorate for Christmas, some do for Halloween, many go all out patriotic for July 4th, and even fewer decorate for Easter. Outside of those holidays, most people, if they do anything will maybe hang a wreath on their front door.
Needless to say, people that go to the extremes that this lady goes to are few and very far between.

I wish....maybe, I have to go straight home to walk the dogs when I get off of work. Depending on daylight and household duties, I may try to sneak over at some point this evening to snap a picture or two. Honestly, I don't think it's going to happen. Maybe I can leave home early enough tomorrow to snap a few photos to put up here tomorrow night. For sure, I can get some photos by Saturday night. I have a bunch of errands to run Saturday that will take me down that way.
I tell ya', I am fine with Corey traveling for work, but when she is gone for over 5 days, being home alone to do it all starts to get a bit more difficult. FYI - Corey doesn't come home again until next Thursday. :guilty:

Yes, there were some traditional Irish decorations, but there is a special trio that makes an appearance. I will say too, that it has a Disney connection!

Busted! I went by tonight to take some photos and I was discovered. I met the very sweet 70 year old woman that I have called 1 Crazy Lady here on the boards.
Honestly, I feel like a complete ******* for ever referring to her that way at this point. So, what I would like to do is to have this thread unsticked after I get a chance to start a new thread that will feature the displays of the woman that introduced herself as "Mama Jean". How can you ever think/speak badly of anyone that indroduces theirself as "Mama ____"?
So, now we have a name to the creator. I will post more about her when I start the new thread. The St. Patty's display is void of mannequins. But, the Easter display is coming soon at the other end of the yard.
