Okay, so we have 13 members of our team, certain to crush our fellow runners/walkers/bikers/swimmers in the 2008 competition.

Some of you I know well, some less so, but we'll all get to know each other well in the coming year. I will be able to consolidate the hours and miles each of us produce each week, and get that into WWDave's scorecard, however that works out. I will ask WWDave if weight work counts as time, since I'm sure many of us do this a few times a week to keep muscles from tearing (and basically parts from falling off).

Here is my running resume:

I'm 51 years old, but only feel the years after a hard run or a long day. In my youth I played soccer, up to and through College, plus 2 truly thrilling matches against professionals (NASL & MLS). Soccer is my true athletic passion, but leg injuries have sadly forced me to hang up my boots. I did some serious running in my late 20's to early 30's and turned in PRs of 17:00 for 5K, 66:36 for 10 miles, and 87:11 for a half marathon, but those days and times will never be seen again.

I started running for real again in the fall of 2003, when our daughter enrolled in College. Since I didn't need to attend her soccer and lacrosse matches anymore I wanted a distraction. I had been at WDW in January 2003 by chance at the same time as the half/full, and it looked like fun, as well as something to keep me busy. So I signed up for the 2004 half.

I've run the past 5 WDW January races, 2 halfs, 1 goofy, and 2 fulls. I'm registered for the goofy in 2009, but focusing on the half. I'm built like a soccer player (quads, hamstrings, gluteus), so I'm pretty strong in shorter races, but past the half marathon distance I really struggle. On good days I'm capable of running 9 mpm pace for up to 13 miles, but when I go longer my body quickly slows down and then breaks down.

I will run the Tower of Terror in October, and I may run the Minnie. Just once in my life I would actually like to run the last 9 miles of the Marathon course, and I suspect the only way that will ever happen is to run Minnie.

And most important of all, my bride is Martha, the Red Dragon. Martha ran her first ever full marathon on January 13 and came across the finish line with 3 great friends in our Wish group. She is everything I lack as a runner: level headed and very consistent with her pace. If she could give some of that to me I'd be a lot more successful in longer events.

Hi everyone

As a runner, I struggle a bit. This year I completed the Goofy challenge :thumbsup2 and had a blast. Last year I ran the full marathon injured and it was pure torture. I've run some half marathons, 5Ks, etc. Like Craig...on the shorter distances (5K) I can pull a quick pace, low 8 mpm but on the longer runs I fall apart. I AM running the Minnie and plan to run those 9 miles and enjoy every second as that is the torture zone for me during the full.

Because I am injury prone I will only be doing 3 runs per week....with a total of approximately 15-20 miles. But I am training for a triathlon this summer so I will be logging bike miles, spinning classes, elliptical and/or ski machine and eventually swim miles in addition to my normal 8 plus hours per week of yoga and pilates. :goodvibes

As you can see from my clippies I have a few races to train for this year...and I'm contemplating the Philadelphia half as well. That should keep me posting miles consistently up until Goofy training starts in earnest.

I think this looks like a STRONG team!!!! I can't wait to see how we do!

Hello

After Amy's post, I feel like a slacker already :rotfl:

I started running two years ago after dealing with lower back issues as a way to strengthen myself and also get healthy. I completed the full WDW marathon in '07 (thanks to Amy believing in me) and the Goofy Challenge a few weeks ago. I've also competed in 8 5k's, 8 10k's and two Halfs. I can finish in the high 7's on the 5k's, right at 8mpm on the 10k's and consistenly train in the 8:30-9:15mpm zone. I add a solid mix of cross training (elliptical, stationary bike & pilates) and a "long" (to me) bike ride when the weather warms up (16-22 miles) in addition to running around 20 miles per week as a base. Hopefully this will be a worthy addition to the team's totals :goodvibes:

This year I plan on the Minnie Weekend events, the DL Half, Goofy '09 and a smattering of local 5k and 10k's in between.

I do all of my races with AmyBeth68 (best running partner ever!), so if you convince either of us to sign up for something...it'll end up double the miles ;)

Can't wait to get to know everyone a little better...and am looking forward to picking up our prizes for 1st place in January :goodvibes:

Craig... :worship: HOLY FAST BATMAN. Those PRs are sick (sorry been watching the X-Games).

Scott....you uber speedy devil.

OK...Scott and Craig are making me feel like Pokey McTurtle. Fortunately speed doesn't count b/c I'd not be so much help...matter of fact...my slow butt is good for the team b/c i'll be out there longer. Yay for the minutes! :thumbsup2

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Wow, I need to pick up the pace with the competition on this team alone!

I started running in spring 2005 to train for the Philadelphia Distance Run. I've been hooked since. My "training" is sporadic at best. (DH says I don't push myself.) I say, I run/race to have fun and enjoy the surroundings.

We've done WDW for the last 3 years (1/2 in '06; Goofy in '07 & '08); DD13 and I will be completing our 3rd Minnie in May; also did ToT; we've also done some other halfs, 10Ks; don't do too many 5Ks as I don't get going until about 3 miles into a run. My best half was 2:30 last June.

This year I turn 40 and to celebrate I'm doing the Philadelphia Women's Triathlon in July. I did the duathlon last year and had a blast.

My year will include many hours of running, biking, swimming and yoga (all of which I track in Excel becauseI'm a geek!). I'm thrilled to be a part of this team...we'll rock!

...I forgot to add that I'm heading to Disneyland to get that extra medal!

Hi Darcey...

Wow...you have a lot of the same events planned as us!!!

And a fellow Jersey girl too :)

The SheRox philly tri in early August will be my first tri and i'm slightly intimidated.

You have nothing to feel competitive about with this group...sounds like you are kickin' some butt. Glad to see another runner girl heading toward 40 in style! :cool1: (I'm turning 40 this year too)

Ooh, I'm In - best introduce myself then.

I'm Helen, I'm 39 (gulp, sob, weep) and live in Australia - admittedly not the normal home of a WISHER, but I'm English by birth and when I lived there WDW was only a 'short' 8 hour plane trip away so the addiction began. Then I moved to New Zealand (18 hours plane flight away) now I'm in OZ (21 hour plane flight away) as a result, I may not be doing the same events as the rest of you, but I will intend to 'represent' by doing the odd half in this neck of the woods (and possibly Disneyland, tho jury is still out on that one).

So in terms of exercise, I'm not the fastest runner in the world (tho can I just mention I was the first Australian over the finish line in the WDW half - we'll ignore the fact that the others trounced me by over an hour in the full!), but I'm consistent - or least I was in New Zealand where all my friends were runners and it was the primary part of my social life - here drinking is the primary part of my social life and so I need something keep me moving and Craig, you're it!!!!.

Over the next 6 weeks I'm on mission weight loss which means lots of short runs probably on the treadmill - plus the odd hour at weekends - then race season will start to begin here (it's summer now, too hot to race - it was 100 yesterday!), so I should crank things up a bit then. At the moment, I think I will do the Sydney newspaper half in May: the Gold Coast half in July and the Sydney vitamin company half in September. So that's me - let battle commence.

Hi everybody!

My name is Martha and I'm Calcio's DW. I'm 47 years old and have been running for 5 years. I ran before our DD was born then took an 18 year hiatus simply because I got tired of it and we lived in places where it was difficult to run. So I did other things like Jazzercise.

I started working with a trainer over 5 years ago and she got me back into running. I ran the WDW Half Marathon in 2005 and 2006 but had hip bursitis problems so didn't run the 2007 one. This year I ran the full marathon and boy was that painful!

Last year I did run the Minnie Marathon and the ToT. I've just now signed up for the WDW Half in 2009. That I can do.

I'm slow. I average 10:30 to 11:00 min miles. But, that's what I run. I workout 4-5 times a week and I also think we need to figure out if WWDave will let us count weight work.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Let the games begin!

Yes...ITA....All Mighty Leader (Craig)...please confirm if the following counts toward minutes exercised.

weight training
Pilates
Yoga
Body toning, core, etc classes

I honestly think they should count. And not just because I can add about 600 minutes per week to our total if they do...although that would help a bit ;). But because we should all be doing some form of weight training or core work as it is essential to healthy running IMO. *stepping off soapbox* LOL! Just let us know what the grand-poobah of the exercise challenge says.

Thank ya!

And  Martha and Helen! What an awesome team we have here! :goodvibes

Hi Guys and pretty princesses.

Yes all types of exercise works. Even things like shoveling snow and mowing the yard with a push mower. A person doesn't need a weight room to get a good workout in.

Basicly anything that you do under your own sweat power counts as exercise. Some activities are great exercise but can't be converted into miles so we are logging miles and hours exercised.

Actually I would encourage you to do a lot of different activities. Walking/running is great for the cardio and most of the leg muscles. But when you combine that with a good strength activity that incorperates the upper body and the core muscles and you have a well rounded program.

For example: My personal routine involves racewalking at various speeds, LSD walking with Erica, and three days a week I play in the pool. The water has 300 times the resistance of water so swimming and sprinting in the pool is like working with light weights. I try to stretch regularly but often neglect that portion of my training.

Good luck y'all.

Okay Amy, since you brought it out...I'll step right up there with you on that soapbox. I did my first half marathon 4 months before I started yoga. A year later and 8 months of yoga later, I noticed a tremendous difference in performance. (And no, it wasn't because my running had been progressing, because I was actually running less and doing more yoga at the time.) After several months of athletic vinyasa yoga, my body felt stronger overall. I would almost consider it a "balanced" strength.

Now a question for you as a pilates instructor...Does yoga count as weight training? The yoga I do is pretty intense, not so meditative. I gotta say, it is possible to get some pretty tight abs with yoga, altough mine are hidden by that soft, squishy gut that appears after having children.

Darcey...YES...Vinyasa flow and Power Yoga are VERY athletic forms of yoga that not only stretch and tone but cause you to burn a ton of calories b/c you get the heart rate up with the flow. I LOVE that type of yoga...and I'm actually teaching a fusion flow class now that is half pilates and half vinyasa yoga.

Anyway...to answer your question more thoroughly, I used to lift weights and now I only do pilates and yoga. I find that because you are lifting your own body weight (doing plank, sun salutations, boat pose, arm balancing poses etc) and performing intense actions using resistence (chair pose, crescent lunge, warrior series and goddess) that you are actually getting a form of "weight training". Plus the pilates and yoga offer a lot of core strength and balance!!! Unless you're looking to really bulk up, I don't think you have to replace yoga with strength training. I think both are EXCELLENT ways to improve your running and help you stay injury free! :thumbsup2

Carrie, I so totally love you right now. Thank you for the effort to make us look good.

Okay, you may have noticed that I am graphics-impaired on these boards, so I have no idea how to use this, or how to get it where I want it. And how can I load up a photo to my bio?

Darcey and Amy

Yes, the weight work is absolutely critical. A couple of springs ago on the first really lovely outdoor running day I got carried away and took off like one of Jessica's Rabbits. The next day I hurt all around the connections of my pelvis, as hip flexors and groins were asked to do too much too soon. Back to the weight room!

Did I learn my lesson? Heck no! This past fall as the miles increased I backed off to 1 weight session per week, at less weight on the legs to let them recover. 2 weeks before race day, ping! inside the right hamstring and I'm in danger of not even starting. Someday I'll learn.

Thank you WWDave for including it in the tally.

Amy

And careful with the leader thing. I'm a college professor who has never, and I mean never, managed anyone but myself. If you're up for an amateur leader, be certain I'll lead in an amateur manner.

And I'm not sure I'd use "slow" to describe Martha. Last May we ran a 10K together, and I had to push it to keep up with her.

Just like our namesakes, out little team is going to kick tail!

I'm an idiot and double posted. And because my computer is crazy, they're ten minutes apart. I guess that's a good way to start off my intro to the team. It's like tripping across the dodgeball court right after you've been picked for a team because your shoe's untied :sad2: ....

Ok, I should probably introduce myself. And I should point out that I'm sharing the couch with a dog and a pregnant wife and it's not a big couch, so if I accidentally type kj#*JDELrf 43fjewklf in the middle of this, that just means the dog pushed me into the pregnant lady.

I'm 31, although my cousin pointed out over Christmas that I'm only 9 years from 40 :sad2: , and I've been running for a little over 3 years. I was always active in my earlier years, and soccer was my drug of choice. Yep, Craig, I'm one of those people like you who knows that true "football" does not involve helmets and a quarterback. :) I played soccer for 13 years up through high school and then intermural in college. I also ran track in high school, but I was a pole vaulter, so who knows if that really counts as anything.

A few years after I graduated, I married the best thing in my life, my lovely DW Krista (aladdinsgirl). As most of you know, we're expecting our first child later this year, so we're pretty excited. And I would be doing an injustice if I didn't mention the other important (and most spoiled) member of our family, our labrador Hines.

Even though I was active in high school and college, after we were married I slowly became out of shape and put on the weight. Christmas 2004, I decided to do something about it. Krista and I both started running and eating healthy, and I ended up losing over 50 pounds. One of my friends had run two marathons and made it look easy, and after having a grand total of two 5Ks under my belt, I signed up for the 2006 WDW full marathon. I trained all year and finished well. Since that point, I've been hooked. I've run Disney every year since, going Goofy in Jan 2007. Krista and I have both run countless 5Ks and 10Ks, quite a few half marathons, and of course Disney every year. I plan on upping the stakes a little this year and I'm shooting for the Cleveland full and Philadelphia full marathons in addition to Goofy 2009. We'll see if I hold up.

Through this process, I also started doing a few triathlons (the first one was a team race with my afformentioned marathon buddy). I now train like a triathlete because I think it's better for my body and it makes me feel stronger overall. Depending on the time of year, I'll run 3-4 times per week (20-30 miles total), bike twice (usually about 50 miles total) and swim twice in addition to weights 2-3 times weekly. I have to admit I can't wait till it gets warmer outside as the bike sessions on my indoor trainer drive me batty!

I don't really consider myself too fast, but for the way I train, I'm ok with my pace and overall times. Like Craig and Scott, I can crank out a faster short race, around 7:00-7:20 per mile for a 10K or less (I actually posted a 17:50 5K in college, but I was young and stupid and had no idea what I was doing), but I slow considerably at the longer distances. Maybe I just play it too conservative, who knows. :confused3

I should probaby mention that Hines just stuck his butt on the side of my keyboard, so I think he wants me to stop typing now.

I know some of you already, and can't wait to meet the rest. I think we've got a great team, and definitely the coolest team name! :thumbsup2 Let's go get 'em, guys!

Steve

Steve: oh yeah, right. You're not fast at all. Sure. 7:00 to 7:20 per mile. Slow as molasses. Sheesh!

Carrie: that is the BEST! Thank you so much. I'm not a creative person so anyone who can do that ranks right up there in my book.

Team 8: we could have some rally towels made with our cool new graphic. CVS will do that for us. We can take them to all the events this year and really get people talking!!

Now all I need to do is figure out how to make it small enough to put in my signature.

Hey all I am a 21 year old that has just recently gone back to school while working a part time job. I ran CC from middle school up through my first year of College. I have also done lots and lots or Tris, will be training to get back into them with the move to Hawaii. I also was a competitive swimmer for 8 years.
I have set some pretty good goals for myself over the coming months. I would really love to have run 50 miles in February plus time doing other things like shoveling and does lifting 25-30 pound computers count towards time? If so I get like 20 minutes in per day. But it will be up to the great and wonderful Panda.
So as some of you may know I am the sister to Xterratri and daughter to NYCpa. So I live in a fairly active household plus I have a great deal of friends who run with nike plus and we challenge each other and such. I work at the Apple store near me and love it, am training for quite a few races this coming summer and of course my main goal is the Honolulu Marathon Dec 14 as my first. But I will just have to see were life takes me from here and I will get in as many workouts as I can to pull my weight for the team.
Craig- Feel free to PM to get me off my but plus PMing Lynne works wonders as well.

:scared1: Wow, Carrie!!:scared1:

I'm likin' THAT graphic!

SO this is a short post, as I stupidly lost my other, long, beautifully written Bio post that would have made you hum the National Anthem.

I'm doing the 2009 WDW Full, as I decided to do a Marathon before 40! I am 38 now, and just did the 2008 WDW Half. I am aiming for a 2:30 PR at the Sarasota Half in about 6 weeks.

I am Mel's DH, and she's my running inspiration (as well as inspiration for the rest of my life). I love spending time with the kids (DD15 and DD4), playing drums, and running. I work as a Network Manager at the Sarasota YMCA, and enjoy playing with my network gadgets and toys. I get to use power tools at my job - AAAAROOOOO!!!

Lookin' forward to getting to know you all better, although I know many of you guys already. What an awesome team!

Hi, Everyone !
I'm Patrick, DH of "twoWDWfools" and so new to endurance events (and WDW boards) that I'm still wet behind the ears.
Liz and I just started walking for an event last fall, a local 5K, and while training for that, she found the 2008 AK Family Safari 5K, and signed us up.
We enjoyed our first 5K in November, in spite of temps so chilly we couldn't JOG, for fear of getting ice-cold air deep in our lungs.
Then we started training for the AK event.
I know, there are you guys out there, laughing about "training" for a 5k, but be gentle, we're over 40 and JUST starting out.
One thing that got us to consider longer events was the sheer number of people at WDW sporting those awesome medals ! There were people who looked no different than us, some even much larger, who finished those events !
We started suffering from "Bling-Envy", and decided on Marathon weekend that we would do the Half in 2009. "If They can do it, WE sure can !"

So since speed and stamina are hard to find in a 41 year old couch-potato like me, we have started training calendars, and we are logging distance over the year so see if we can get to WDW under our own power. If we have jogged, walked and biked 1186 miles in the next year, we'll have made it !

We have an ambitious schedule for the next 13 months...
We'll be at:
The WDW Kidney Foundation 5K in March
Walk & Roll Chicago 5 mile walk in Mid-May
A bicycling weekend near Rockford, for Memorial Day (75 miles in two days)
(Summer events TBD)
WDW ToT 13.5K in October
WDW Half marathon in Jan 2009

Love the graphic for the team !

Hope we can help boost the mileage/minutes totals for the team!

Hi all,

Just waiting to get "voted off" ....

I'm Liz -- the 43 year old wife of tiggerspal222 (who is also on the team) and mom to a 19 yr old son. Fairly new to the Disboards and completely new to WISH and the whole running thing. Saw the shirts at WDW marathon weekend and just had to check it out. Oh and I don't run...I walk.

Was typically active as a kid but at 11 yrs was diagnosed with juvenile rhuematoid arthritis. They had no idea how much motion I'd get back but I pretty much refused to sit around. Before anyone knew it I was back on my bike and roller skates (mom was thrilled about the skates ;) ). Got back to standard activity with certain exclusions and went thru high school using it as the reason to avoid basketball (oh no, I can't run/jump around the court like that). Floor hockey never seemed to bother me though....:rolleyes1 Didn't do any running that wasn't required. Just didn't interest me and that did start to hurt after a few miles.

Fast forward 20+ years.....

Mid last year decided enough was enough and made decision to get back into shape. Wanted to feel and look better. Set up sessions with a personal trainer at the gym, signed up for a local 5K as well as the WDW 5K during marathon weekend confident I could walk fast enough to do these.

Going ok then one day late Sept working with the trainer - POP! Right knee goes out and I come down on it. Next day it's the size of a basketball (always hated that sport) and find out ACL is completely torn. Due to my age and the damage from the arthritis they won't try to repair it. yippee....

Well did the local 5K in Nov with a time of 49:36 - impressive, huh? I was just happy to finish as it was cold, very windy and miserable out.
Jan comes and managed to do the AK 5K in 47:23. Considering the holidays I was quite pleased with taking 2 min off my time. After watching others over the weekend, DH and I got medal envy and decided "hey with a year to train we can do the 1/2 in 2009". Plus we both found we actually enjoyed it. Both the solo time and the other people on the course.

So this year's line up is the March 5K at WDW, ACS 5 mile walk in June, a 30 & 45 mile bike run in May, planning on ToT 13K and are already signed up for the 2009 WDW 1/2. I've just set up our Excel sheets to track progress for the year and am really looking forward to this!

I have every intention of considerably improving my time and I do bike and other cross training plus core work. Just not an all out runner as that does cause me pain. Thinking about adding yoga, too.

Sorry about this being so long. Just realize how much I typed.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Liz

Patrick and Liz

There is no need to apologize. You 2 fit right in my many of the Wish group.

Since you are building for the January 2009 Half, my free advice to you is to build slowly. Look at that long term goal and work out a plan that gets you there slowly. Going up in distance too quickly is a recipe for certain injury in folks of a certain age just starting out. Training too many days a week is the same danger. Try to find the balance of number of days a week, and the intensity of each day that you train, some easy and short, some hard and short, some easy and long, and a few hard and long. I think the TOT in October is an excellent benchmark for you to shoot at. If you have done around 9 miles 2 weeks before the TOT you'll have a good experience in that race, and from there pushing up to 12 miles in training by early January is a breeze.

Also be sure to not become a servant to your training plan. There are days you don't have it, even when you have 5 scheduled. Don't feel guilty about playing hooky or going shorter from time to time. Your body is likely telling you it need some rest. You cannot do this very often and still get there, but now and again taking it easy or off is good.

And by the way, even at my fittest, yes I trained for 5K's. Of course in those long ago years those were pretty darn hard workouts, but most people do 5K's as a test of temp instead of endurance, so a good 5K, whatever that means to all of us, means hard training.

And if you're wondering, OF COURSE I have my training logs in excel, reaching back to my return to running in fall of 2004. It's either comforting or compulsive obsessive to be able to look back and any day or week and see what I did then.

Take care

Craig

UPDATE!

We've heard from all but Momoftwogirls and Mousemgr2.

Where are you guys? Enquiring minds want to know?

I'll build a spreadsheet to track all 13 of us each week, consolidate it to monthly, and then report it to WWDave. I'll let you know how to get the information to me.

Aye Aye Captain (where's the saluting smiley?). But seriously, thanks for doing this Craig!

Look Scott...Craig has spreadsheets too! You people and your spreadsheets and tracking and organized training. Geeze. ;)

Liz and Patrick: Welcome!! Sounds like you guys have an exciting year ahead. I can't wait to hear about the big bike ride as that is something I'd love to do in the future. :goodvibes You guys have a lot to offer our humble little team and I think we've got a really motivated group here.

Craig - thanks for the advice. We did find schedules that work for us with slight modification that will allow us to build over the year. Yeah, we figured setting the ToT run as a goal would put us in good shape for Jan.

Amy - Thanks and will let you know how the rides go. We're both pretty good with distance riding but certainly need to do some work between now and then. Love to ride - on and off road.

Hey Liz and Patrick! Glad you guys are here!

That bicycle weekend does sound really cool! You'll have to let us know how it goes.

So when are we going to break the sad news to the other teams that they might as well not even try, we've already got them beat. ;)

Although secretly, the team with Lynne and Matt does have me worried. The rest of us mortals can't compare to those crazies!

I'm not going to confess to being a spreadsheet tracker. Not me, I would never do something geeky like that (ok, so I just finished mine for the year, too :sad2: ).

Have a good evening, guys! Talk to you soon!

Patrick and Liz: Welcome, welcome!! :welcome: Congrats on making the committment and sticking to it. It shows you really are serious about this. Don't apologize for walking. Lots of us are walkers. I walked 7 miles in the marathon this year. I think it's great that you took 2 minutes off the previous time--fabulous! You should be really proud of that.

Welcome to the team. Looking forward to hearing about your training and will forward to meeting you at races!

Hello fellow Rabbits.

I see we have 2 more members of the team, Aladdinsgirl and Julia & Nick's Mom. Please add a short bio to the thread, so we all know about you. I do know that Krista like black dogs, black jerseys, and is married to and carrying the child of the black knight. And that's about it.

We start Friday, Feb 1, and the weeks will run Friday through Thursday. So after Thursday, Feb 7 I'll need an e-mail from everyone with hours (all inclusive, running, walking, biking, x-training, swimming, and weight lifting) and miles covered (running and walking I believe only, since biking miles could really skew the results if a team had 3 big time bikers).

Please send your results to me at:

stephenson@babson.edu

Take care of your bodies and be sure to count your hours and miles.

ARGH! I didn't even know I was officially part of the team, I was just checking the thread to see what Stephen was up to. ;) Crap, I guess that means I have to actually start working out again! :teeth:

Okay, so a little bit about me, my real name is Krista and I'm married to Stephen/Steve/skfulkers--we've been married for a little over 7 years (10/21/00 and yes, we honeymooned at WDW :)). I am 29 years old and I am currently 12 weeks pregnant with our first baby. I go to the doctor on Friday to hear the heartbeat for the first time, I am both wildly excited and scared to death at the same time. :)

I started running in May 2005, about the time I joined the Wish team. Stephen had just signed up for the 2006 marathon and was looking at pictures and youtube videos from the 2005 marathon and I saw that not all runners and walkers are elites--some are fast and some are slow, some are skinny and some aren't, some are tall with long legs and some were like me--very short. I didn't realize that "normal" people ran marathons. I saw those people with their medals and crossing the finish line and I thought "I can do that". So, I signed up for the 2006 WDW half marathon on 5/24/05 (how sad is it that I remember the date??). I started as a walker, trained like that for a couple of months I think, then transitioned into a walk/run for a month and then finally a run/walk. I started r4/w1, now I do anything from r5/w1-r9/w1 depending on how I'm feeling. I could train to be a full time runner, the thing is, I don't want to. I like the walk breaks and since I'm prone to IT band injuries, I think the walking keeps some of the stress off of my IT band. Since May 2005 I have completed countless 5K's and 10K's, 4 half marathons, and 1 full marathon. I signed up for the 2009 WDW half marathon, most likely my only event this year with the baby, and then hopefully the 2010 Goofy Challenge.

About me personally, I graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in May 2000 with a degree in Communications/Broadcasting, but of course I have never worked in the broadcasting field! I work in the credit dept/accounts receivable dept for a large concession equipment company, so think about me when you eat your popcorn at the movies or cotton candy at Walt Disney World. :) My job isn't too incredibly stressful and I can leave work at work, but since I deal with past due accounts and lots of the time screaming people who are mad because their orders won't ship due to being past due, my job isn't always sunshine and lollipops. Outside of work and running, I also teach 2nd grade Sunday School at our church and of course, I'm mom to the best dog in the entire world, Hines, our black lab. And oh yeah, Stephen and I are both HUGE Steelers fans, we seriously both bleed black and gold. I'm going to admit something bad to you, one of my very first thoughts when I found out I was due in August was happiness that I would not be in labor on a Sunday in football season and miss a game. How bad is that??!! :)

Okay, now that I have written a novel about me, let me say how glad I am to be on this team! I'm excited to be with everyone and I know this challenge will keep me moving over the next few months, I promise I will try my best not to let you guys down!!!

Let's go get 'em!!!

I just checked with WWDave over on the new roster thread and he is saying that if it logs miles, count the miles...so biking does count toward both the miles total and the hours total. Time to start cycling to the fitness center :goodvibes:

Hello - my name is Kate...

I was excited to find out I made a team! Is there somewhere that I can read how the whole thing works?

I am new to marathoning/running - my DH and I decided it was time to get in shape and this seemed like a great way...I just completed the half but I was only able to walk due to knee surgery and an ankle injury - now I hope to train all out for next year -

I live in Cincinnati and plan on doing the Flying Pig half and the Air Force Half Marathon in the Fall - we are trying to work out babysitting issues for Disney next year and I will either be doing the half or full next year...preferably the full...

I am 35 and have two kids...can you guess their names? ;) I am a SAHM but plan our church's 4,5 & 6 grade classes and am there on Monday nights. My DH is Steve and he is a lawyer for a local non profit student loan company...

I just wanted to pop in and wish DH's team good luck in the competition!

I noticed several of you are doing Goofy next year and wanted to recommend a training program someone used last year. I think Howard did it last year where you don't start training until December. That saves your legs and cuts down on all that silly mileage...and then you don't have to worry about all those numbers and fussy spreadsheets.

Krista...I checked my OB/Gyn textbooks and they definitely recommend spending the rest of your pregnancy on the couch, eating bon-bons and having your husband wait on you hand and foot. Don't want to jiggle the baby with any of that walking or running stuff!

Oh and honey, as you're training for your first full, I completely recommend skipping all those annoying short runs and saving your legs for the long runs on the weekends. And maybe skip some of those too...the books say if you can run 20, you can run 26.2, so just save it up for those two.

Good luck Team 8! :teeth:

We seem to be a chatty bunch.
Steven- Yes I am moving to Hawaii with Lynne actually after Lynne as she is moving in June and I will be going over in August.
Helen- I figure that the days and weeks start when they do in your area. So you week starts tomorrow and mine starts Friday. But the Panda might think something different.
Well the miles totals for our group should not be that bad as I have vowed to get back into Triathlons. So my cross training is swimming and biking. But :ssst: don't tell the other teams. That way we have a little advantage.

I'm Susan (AKA DianeL's training buddy). I am a walker (and a slow one at that, hence the turtle with the rocket). I started walking in 2005 when we (Diane and I) made our first attempt at the half marathon. Of course we didn't finish, but then again we didn't train either. I know, we're not the sharpest tools sometimes, but once we started training we found a passion for it.

I've overcome some injuries along the way. Most of them were due to having improper fitting shoes. After hundreds of dollars, numerous pairs of shoes, and lots of physical therapy, I recovered and found myself training for the 2008 Mickey. We trained long and we trained hard. And then in November one of my biggest wishes came true; I found a new and better job. :surfweb:
So, after much angst I decided to take the job and forego the Marathon. Our plan is to do the 2010 Full Marathon. We are already signed up for the 2009 Donald.

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I'm not concerned about my pace so long as I don't get swept. My biggest concern is having fun and getting healthy.

Completed Events:
2006 Donald
2007 Donald
2007 Flying Pig 10k
2007 TOT
2007 Flying Feather 4 Miler (John Bingham Racing)

Upcoming Events:
April 2008: The Martian Marathon (Dearborn, MI)
2008 Minnie Marathon 5k and possibly 15k
2008 Race for The Taste

:tiptoe: Last member of Team 8 checking in!!!

I’m excited to be on the best team!

A little about me – I started reading the WISH board at the end of 2005. There was a lot of excitement about the 2006 race weekend. I made sure to return to the boards in Jan 2006 to read everyone’s reports about the races. It sounded like a lot of fun!!! I had never exercised much but thought that a trip to WDW :earsboy: :earsgirl: would be good incentive for me to get moving and try to exercise more. I registered for the half marathon that spring. In August, My DH (Mike – Optimator) decided to register too and train with me. We followed MFM walking plan. It was fun training together that fall. We completed the 2007 half together (the first race for both of us). Since that time Mike has taken off. He now runs, while I still walk.
I also completed the Minnie ::MinnieMo last year and will be returning to do the 15K again in May.

Darcey – :thumbsup2 I love the spreadsheet!

Krista – your baby ticker is fun to watch! It’s amazing to think about that incredible and precious life growing inside you.

Susan – I’m glad there’s another walker in our group.:woohoo:

Darcey, Helen, AmyBeth – :cake: I have that special birthday this year too!

Steve – I still haven’t gotten around to writing a race report but I really need to say :thanks: :thanks: :thanks: for taking care of Mike’s bag during the half marathon. I was soooo happy to see him (and all you guys) at Mile 12. I was at the top of the hill coming down into the Epcot parking lot and I could see a huge green glow. The team shirts are great! Seeing that inspired me to keep going and then when I saw that Mike was there – WOW!!! I was ready to quit – I wasn’t feeling great – but having him by my side for the last mile helped me finish strong. Thanks for watching his bag and precious medal!!!!

I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone better during 2008 and celebrating our victory at POP in 2009.

Hey, Helen & Amy. Just wanted you to know that Mel has noticed a lot of us turning 40 this year. We should all do something to commemorate the event, maybe at the Disney Marathon weekend. (Oh, and Amy, I thought you might like to know I picked up George Sheehan's This Running Life at the library today; I could have sworn you had one of his quotes in your siggie.)

Hey Kathy! Mike dropped by Ohana & suggested DH and I sign up for Cleveland--maybe because I think Cleveland rocks! It sounds like a party.

Anyway, this is just a quick, friendly drive-by before the competition begins. I'm sure glad you chose Jessica's Rabbits for your team name, 'cuz I think yinz are gonna need all the lucky rabbits' feet you can get!

Welcome Kathy

So we are all ready to go. Heck, I even re-arranged my schedule so tomorrow is a 5 miler. Can't let those hecklers from team Ohana jump away from us first day. And you are partially right about Optimator Mike. He's gone past walking and running to nearly flying, with some of those results he's produced.

Carrie, okay who mooned team 7? WWDave insisted on none of that stuff. Is a spell in time out required?

Hey guys! Krista said we must have all the hard workers on our team since we don't post constantly during the work day like some of the other slacker, nothing-better-to-do-than-hit-refresh-on-the-web-page teams. :)

I forgot that this little competition actually kicks off tomorrow. Stupid me, I scheduled a 1 mile swim for tomorrow, which means I'll contribute a measly mile to our total, unless I wimp out and do even LESS than one mile. Yep, glad I could help out. :sad2:

Kathy--I didn't realize you were on our team! I read the screen names several times, but had forgotten your screen name. Can you break your husband's leg so he won't rack up the miles for an opposing team? Actually, that's a little harsh. Maybe just cause him to stub his toe or something.

Hope everyone is having a good week. Talk to you guys later!

Okay team, I was not planning on doing marathon weekend in 2009. Now, I have a dilemma with all this challenge business.

I guess it would be possible to make a quick trip down on Thursday, do the 5K on Friday, then Goofy and head home on Sunday...

Opinions..would it be too much?

Darcey: I say go for it ;). That'll add up the miles in the fall for you LOL!

OK team....we better get our butts in gear here. Some of our competition in the snow belt today are posting 5 hours and more of snow shoveling!!! Anyone on our team shoveling/scooping/sweeping snow today???? I wish I could say I am; however....we're getting ICE today instead. A nice thick layer covering everything. The snow may bury us before we get started! :lmao:

Anyway...good luck to everyone getting the miles and hours in this week. I'm off to a good start with an hour of pilates/yoga this morning. I'll be hitting the ski machine for some more time and miles later...or possibly even slip and slide my way to the FC to jump on the treadie for a 4 mile run. Hang tough Killer Bunnies!

Absolutely go for it. Then you can sleep on the flight home.

Also, I went ahead and posted my effort today, just so we would have a score in the spreadsheet. Can you tell me how to input the hours? I ran 5.1 miles in about 51 minutes. I could put in the miles but not the time. Any hints?

Okay all, send me your results next Friday or after for Feb 1 through 7.

Today I logged 100 minutes. 1 mile. No, it didn't take me 100 minutes to do one mile. I did 40 minutes of cardio--ran a mile, 10 min on stairmaster, 10 min on elliptical and 10 min on bike. Then took a 60 min yoga class.

Tomorrow I'll get about 90 minutes. 30 min of cardio where I'm hoping to run 2 miles (gotta build slowly) and a strength class at the gym.

No snow here to shovel. And I'm happy for it!! We got quite a bit of rain. I'll catch up in the fall when all the leaves come down and I'm out for several hours just raking. Yipee!

Let's get 'em, rabbits!

I think next Friday I'll change the title of this same thread to Team 8 Training Reports. This way everyone can give me their miles and hours for the week of Feb 1 through 7.

By the way, I've tested Darcey's great spreadsheet by input of Martha's and my training from Friday and today. Since I'm the only one testing, we are in first place right now!!

Hey guys! Hope everyone's having a great weekend. I'll have you know that our little miles game here is the ONLY thing that gave me the motivation I needed today to get out on the bike. It was cold--about 33 degrees with a wind chill much colder, but I got out there and cranked out 20 miles so I'd have some actual miles to report. So maybe this game is a good thing. :)

Amy--I have a Cycle Ops Magneto trainer, it's a magnetic one and it does the job just fine. Apparently, the fluid ones are even better, but since I have never had one, I don't know the difference. Krista got it for me as an anniversary present and I love it. I will admit that "rides" in the basement get a little monotonous (hence my 20 miles outside in the freezing temps this morning), but I usually put on a movie and just spin. I'll put on my heart rate monitor so I can check my effort since it's tougher to gauge how hard you're working when the thing is stationary. I do know this--when I get done with an hour spin on the thing, I actually feel like I've been on an hour-long ride, so I suppose it's probably working the way it should. I'm no expert on the thing, but if you have specific questions, just let me know. By the way, when's the first tri this season you're targeting? I need to find one around here, but I haven't spent enough time looking at race calendars.

Craig--since I'm bad at following directions, let me get this right--you just need us to e-mail you our weekly hours/mileage after each week, right? We don't actually have to put anything into some master spreadsheet somewhere?

Have a good evening, guys!

My name is Carol, and my goal is to run the 2010 WDW marathon. We now have a treadmill in our house, so I'm starting the training with the C25K program.

Can someone let me know when/how to post our miles & minutes. (just on this thread? or somewhere else?) Thanks!

Carol

Hello and Welcome. My wife and I (Red Dragon) have managed to visit the major Canadian cities and regions of the eastern and western zones, but we've never been to the great cities of Alberta. Perhaps one day, and then a certain trip up into the Rockies.

Unfortunately you've joined a team with 1 significant disadvantage. I'm sorry to tell you that your team's captain although well meaning, is completely unfamiliar with power and authority. In his athletic career he never was a team captain, and throughout his work career, he has never, ever managed even 1 single person. How he's managed to achieve this result is a closely guarded secret.

The training week count runs from Friday to Thursday. We began on Friday, Feb 1, so week 1 will end on Thursday, Feb 7. So we'll need you to report your total time of CV exercise (all types, run, walk, bike, X-train, swim, all) and your miles covered (again by all methods) during each week.

You can get this to me by 2 methods. You can simply post it in this thread each Friday and I'll pick it up. You can also e-mail it to me at:

stephenson@babson.edu

Good luck building up to 26.22 in January 2010. You'll find our little team has all types of distance event participants. You'll also find you will be called "young kid," being only 38 and the mother of 2 little ones.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. You'll get lots of answers, whether or not they're good answers is for you to decide! In advance, I would recommend you mix up your training as you build to the marathon. Some running, biking, x-training, and lifting will help you build strength while reducing the likelihood of injury. Many of us have found that as the years fly past us we are unable to run every day, or train hard every day. Mix hard and easy days and build slowly, and before you know it, on January 10, 2010 you'll cross the finish line in the EPCOT parking lot, to the applause of your loved ones.

Well I emailed the great Calcio with my spreadsheet but I can post the jist of it here.
Miles: 79.52
Hours: 8.23

Breakdown
Run Miles: 17.51
Run Hours:3.06
Bike Miles:60.87
Bike Hours:3.91
Swim Miles: 1.14
Swim Hours: 45 minutes
Misc Hours: 30 minutes really called the concept 2's at the gym

So I have been a very industrious rabbit and am feeling great. The bike miles help with the run miles and how I feel doing them. Plus I think I finally have a race calender to report.
April 6 Martian Half Marathon
May 4 Minnie Marathon
September Maui Half Marathon
December 14 Honolulu Marathon
January 8 Mickey
Plus I am hoping to get some 5ks and 10 milers in the area. And wait for it some Triathlons. Well that is all I have to report.

Thanks Everybody

I've put in the spreadsheet all the data I have.

I've noticed the miles add up correctly once I changed the sum formula to include all the rows. The hours, however, aren't adding up, even after changing the sum. It may be we need to go to hours in decimals.

We're looking great, with 7 reporting and 9 still to be heard from, we have 90.86 miles.

Craig

Craig:

When I uploaded the spreadsheet, I noticed I lost a lot of formatting. I just went back and looked and my custom formatting for time was also changed. I'm so NOT happy about this.

I'll be trying to figure out an alternative...

Thanks Darcey, and sorry for asking about this. You've certainly done a great deal already.

I keep my own log with time in decimals. I have to admit I've never used the hours:minutes format so I don't know how it calculates sums.

If you need me to do anything with our numbers I'm happy to do it.

Hey Y'all!

Nasty day down here in SW Florida today, rainy, floody, wild boars in the streets wearing compression shorts - it's Armageddon for sure.

Anyway, yesterday I turned in 46 minutes @ 4.02 miles (that's for you, Craig!)

A lousy pace, but it was a lousy day and I needed to just walk it out:headache:

Decimals must be the way to go then. You track that way and that's what popped into my head as I was driving to work, so that's the answer.

I'll go in and change the formats and let everyone know. The next issue will be how how specific to be. Do we track 15 minute intervals (1.25, 1.5, 1.75, etc.) or will we do 1.16 for 1 hr 10 min for example. Any thoughts?

Can you give me the entire week? Sorry, but that's a lot easier for me than tracking you day by day.

Darcey

I am so sorry the format changed in the transfer. I have changed around our tab to keep the time by decimal, and updated our team's hours similarly to decimal in the aggregate score sheet. I don't know if it's better to have one very unlucky person to make all the changes, or have each captain do it individually, but I have done it for us.

I just want to say that I think our team did fantastic this week!!! :thumbsup2

Kate...Don't feel bad...just get yourself better. That's most important. Running/walking or doing anything with bronchitis is not good :(. Just take care of yourself and get back to it when you feel good again!!! :goodvibes And I just want to add that I think your design for the Eye2Eye shirt is beautiful!! The castle on the front is just sooo cool. Thanks for volunteering your time to do that. I know it's getting a little sticky with the shirts...but I really appreciate what you did and I think it's an awesome design! Everyone working on the shirts is putting a lot of time in, carrie, mel, yourself, sunny, etc....I think it's awesome!

Steve...Thank you for the comments. Yeah, that's about an average. I just think my body is still in recovery mode from Goofy and everything feels so much harder. I have added more yoga into the mix since I think I'll be getting my certification in that soon. So I'm trying to put the hours in so I can be at the top of my game. Spinning will be a weekly thing for me...I just can't wait to spend more time on my road bike once the weather calms down. You had an impressive week yourself! :thumbsup2

Erin...HOLE E. COW. You rocked it. Look at those numbers. Thanks for all those workouts LOL! You're a machine!!!!

Hello Kate

I'm sorry circumstances will force you to step away. I suspect the teams will all have folks stepping out and stepping in, based on the other duties that drive our lives. Don't worry about hanging on until we get a new person, since I don't know if that will or will not happen.

Good luck and if you'd like to keep in touch, please do.

Hello Jeff, Helen, and Susan

Do you have Feb 1 - 7 miles and hours for me? I have all the other numbers from the first week's result in the socrecard. If you have some miles we could use them, as team 5 has leapt ahead of us, largely based on the 98 miles Thundrmat produced this week (wow!).

This is a team effort and what the weekly totals do not show is that there was one day I only did .02 miles on the treadmill. Every little bit helps, I can get gonzo miles by biking but I also do not contribute many hours. We are here to support each other and who cares if we win the Prize. At the end of this year we will have all won by doing something for ourselves.

Hi guys :)

just checking in to update.

Steve...wow what a cycling story you had from this weekend. Reminds me I need to get that kit for my bike!!! :thumbsup2

Helen...Great week :). Just a reminder that you can count your cycling miles (you may have done so).

Scott...AWESOME week. You posted big numbers for us. THANK YOU! :goodvibes

OK....so since Friday my numbers have been low. I'm nursing a shoulder injury and have a sore elbow. WAY TOO MANY push-ups, planks, weights :(. I teach classes where I need to demonstrate proper form so I end up doing tons of these exercises over and over w/ no rest days. It's taking a toll on my old joints I think. I need to use students to demo for me for a few weeks. Anyway...I chose to not do a heavy yoga class and simply taught my saturday.

Since Friday I've logged 6 miles and 2 hours of exercise total. :confused3 The miles should bump up a little more this week but the total hours may drop. It's fun though...I love seeing what everyone is doing to stay fit and healthy! :thumbsup2

And Craig...did I see that you'll be running Minnie? I hope so..your pace goal is where Scott and I hope to be. Sub 9 for the entire race. Not sure I can pull it off but you two definitely can!!!! :thumbsup2

Which brings me to my next question....does anybody here do speed work regularly? If so, have you done it on a treadmill? I really want to work one day on bringing my pace up to snuff. I'm hoping to PR in a 5K. I think I can do it with a little discipline and hard work. But speed training is necessary. I just can't get to a track...but a treadie is definitely available.

TIA!

Amy

Yes, I'll be at the starting line on May 4, and yes, my target is a bit faster tham 9 mpm. You and Scott are absolutely welcome to run on my shoulder. Better stated, I would love to have you 2 on my shoulder during the race. It's so much easier to run hard when you have someone right next to you, pulling each other through respective tough parts.

I do a fair amount of speedwork, and when necessary, like today, I'm happy to use the treadmill. This likely goes back to my high school track background, but I really enjoy some type of interval or speed workout, every week or two.

I had a running bible several years ago titled "Run Farther, Run Faster." It's point was to run fast you need to run fast. When I picked it up I had run a bunch of 10K's between 40 and 41, but couldn't get under 40. I followed the philosophy over the winter, and in April went sub-38 in a 10K. When I finished all I could say was, "where did that come from?"

The key is running fast trains your body to run fast and relax at the same time. If you don't do this when training, on race day you can run fast, but your body strains as it hasn't done enough of it. Try to run perhaps 20-30 seconds per mile faster than your race pace over varying distance, perhaps 400, 800, or 1600 meters, whatever you like. If you've done a few of these workouts, on race day your target pace will feel slow and very easy. Also don't do this too often, or you risk injury or burnout.

Today was my first speed workout for Minnie. My target is around 8:55 per mile, so I ran the following:

1/2 mile at 10:20 per mile pace
1/2 mile at 9:20
1/2 mile at 10:10
1/2 mile at 9:05
1/2 mile at 10:00
1/2 mile at 8:48
1/2 mile at 9:50
3/4 mile at 8:35
3/4 mile continually easing off, finishing at 9:40 pace.

This brought me in the 5 miles at 46:30. I never felt like I was really pushing it, and I eased back to recover during the run. After I knew I had worked, but wasn't really tired or sore at all.

Ideally I'd do this on an outdoor track, but today was the treadmill. I always set the incline at 0.5 degrees, which I find is a bit tougher than running flats outside.

The nice part of a speed workout like this is it's actually easy mentally. It's not 5 miles, it's a bunch of individual segments, each of which go by really quickly and require concentration.

I'm sure we'll go back and forth on this in the next few months. I suspect I'll do something like this every 2 weeks between now and May 4.

Take care of the arm and elbow, and thanks for giving me the opportunity to talk about speedwork! After so many boring LSD runs for the marathon, today was a total treat.

Thank you Craig! Great info there :)...I appreciate you taking the time to put it down for me. I think I will attempt that workout this week when I do my first ever "speed" training. I've done tempo runs a lot..but never an actual speed training day. I hope it helps!! My last 5 Mile race I finished in 43:something LOL. Anyway...I want to keep that pace for the 9 miler. It's going to be a big challenge for me. For Scott..that's a walk in the park...but it will require a lot of hard work for me LOL! I'm not speedy by nature...well....I can sprint like the dickens...give me a 100 yard dash and I'm good. BUT...over the long haul I'm really not quick. I love a challenge though! :thumbsup2

Hey guys! I'm glad to see our team thread is moving along. (Don't tell the main thread, but this is the thread I check first every time I get online ;) ).

Craig--thanks for all the info on speedwork. I've done a little in the past, but not enough. Like Amy, I tend to do tempo runs, but not enough speed work. My past experiences with trying to run a faster race have been going longer distances in training and then hitting the race a little harder because it's a shorter distance. For the Flying Pig half last year, I did LRs of 18 miles so that the 13.1 would be easier at a faster pace. I know this is probably not the correct way to do it, but it worked for me. I'm going to try to do it the "right" way this year, and I'm going to try to follow your advice. Thanks again!

Susan, Helen, Jeff--great job on the weekly totals! I haven't checked the main spreadsheet today, but I bet we're close to first place (even though the place isn't supposed to matter, I'll admit....I love to win! :) ).

Scott/Amy--definitely GO GET A BIKE REPAIR KIT! I thought I was prepared with a spare tube, patch kit and a few CO2 catridges, but somehow I still managed to be stranded in the middle of nowhere in a man's version of high heels. :sad2: And Amy, hope your shoulder and elbow recover quickly!

Kate--take it easy on yourself. Hope the bronchitis subsides. By the way, I did get your PM, I'm just REALLY slow about answering those. I forwarded it to Krista, and she said she'll reply too, so now I can blame my lateness on her. :)

Well, I'm trying to add to our miles. I had an 11 mile run scheduled for today and started the first 5 on the treadmill this morning because it was 12 degrees with 30 mph winds and windchills WELL below zero. But after 5 miles, I couldn't take the treadmill anymore, so I put on about 15 layers of clothes and went outside. Ok, it was cold. I had every inch of skin covered, but even the slightest crease between my face mask and sunglasses brought stinging cold that I was sure would turn to frostbite. I thought I loved cold weather running, but this was beyond anything I had run in before. But I'm happy to say I can add 11 more miles to our total.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Talk to you guys soon!

Bad weekend here by way of working out. Went to motorcycle show on Saturday (I am so ready for spring to get mine back out) then yesterday was -2 with -20 windchill. I refused to leave the house. Took care of housework, laundry, hanging new photos, etc. By the time dinner was done, so was I.

Hey everyone I have done some this weekend but not as much as I would have liked. 14 miles Saterday and three Sunday and just under two hours. I also got about 8 miles in today. Well in answer to the question about speed workouts. I try to do them at least once a week. They are easier for me to do a speed workout on the treadmill, a visual indication of just how fast I am going. Plus it makes kicking it up a notch just the click of a button. Well that is all have to report so far.

I find this time of year so hard to get high miles in, especially up here in the cold, snow encrusted north. Last week I was able to get more miles in b/c I spent time on the bike. I'm now trying to build my running miles in prep for the Minnie so the miles will be lower. I actually got a run in OUTSIDE yesterday!! :cool1: The day started cold and windy but by afternoon when I was back from the mall, the wind had died down and it was great running weather. That does mean that I didn't get to the gym so no bike time.

My job keeps me so busy during the day that I don't have time to frequent these boards. It's a good thing DH is Calcio so I just breeze in and tell him my times and miles and let him keep track! But I realized that's not fair to you guys as I should be letting you all how I'm doing.

Suffice it to say that since the marathon, it's been sporadic and low miles. I really need to get my mojo back!

Happy training everyone!!!

Hello, hello - horribly anti-social team member here - am on 5 deadliens a week at the moment, so v little time for online chatting - but I'm at least running regularly (even if it is only in short bursts). This weeks total..
13miles, 2.20 - wasn't that the same as last week? Ah well I said I was consistent - Helen

Team...I'm really so impressed with our hours and miles. Keep up the great work...and for those dealing with illness, injury, work and just plain old LTO...PD and no worries/no apologies. :grouphug:

I guess I should update my world for my team...even though I think we may be the quiet ones in the bunch. Of course rabbits are quiet little animals aren't they :confused3 .

Had a pretty good weekend, managed a 3 mile speed workout (thanks Craig!) on Friday, along with an hour of Fusion Flow. On Saturday I did a 4 mile walk :cool1: and taught a class but didn't really do any of it...being a good teacher! On Sunday I ran my 6 miler...not super fast but a nice solid pace! And yesterday I taught 3 classes....did approximately 90 minutes of Pilates :faint:. Today I ran a little 3 miler in the 35 mph wind gusts...made it a little tougher than it should have been :). I should do some pilates and I still have another class to teach as well this afternoon.

OK...that's it from my world...not that anyone cares LOL But at least it keeps me on top of the workouts! :thumbsup2

Today I did 7 miles. 2 1/2 on the TM and 4 1/2 on the bike. 45 minutes. We've got quite a bit of precipitation heading our way so who knows what will happen this weekend. I do so much better when running outside. I ran 3 miles in 31:39 outside on saturday. Sigh. Don't know when I'll do that again.

Hello Dave

I think our little group is pounding it pretty good. We'll be competitive, I suspect, all the way.

We'd likely be more than competitive if Matt quit putting up mega-numbers. To hear he was doing it in Death Valley was just pouring lemon juice over my paper cut.

I am putting in pretty stable hours and miles each week. Tomorrow is a tempo workout, trying to get some speed in the legs for Minnie. I would love dearly to see sub-9 mpm for the course. Then if I could just replicate that for the last 9 of the marathon, then I'd have a marathon time to crow over.

Hi All !
Good effort out there !
Not as bad this week, might start getting respectable numbers up on the ol' Tote Board. Just so long as Jerry Lewis isn't reading off the totals, we'll all be fine.

19.57 miles
169 minutes

Been working on intervals on the treadmill, 2mins@4mph, 2mins@6mph, repeat as necessary to fill 20-30 minutes. Did a full basement 5K on Monday, felt pretty good. Working on STAMINA... Want to be ABLE to run for more than 2 minutes at a stretch.

We'll be missing a workout this week as my Sweetie is taking me to the opera for my Birthday on Friday night. So, no run.. We will, however be trying to get in some outside time on Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
Enjoy the weekend, everyone !!!!

I have to tell you guys....I'm so excited too....I did my first "hill repeat" workout today. I ran an easy mile; did 3 x Hill Repeats (.10 mile) btwn 46-49 sec. each time. With recovery walk back down the hill after. Then after my final hill, I ran another mile at what I *thought* was an easy pace and finished it in 8:01!!!! So I missed a couple of runs this week due to both not feeling right and a pesky shin something-or-other that decided to flare up on me.

Good news is that it meant hitting the elliptical, which results in more miles for the time spent ;)

Thanks everyone for your weekly results. I've input everything I've received so far.

Right now we're back in front, but that's because I input the numbers pretty much as I receive them. The other big teams put in their weekly number in a dump, sort of like the 1960 presidential election in Illinois when Mayor Daley waited to know how many votes Cook County needed to put JFK in the white house, and then mysteriously produced them ;) .

Amy

Good for you on the hills. If I've told you this before, sorry, but here it is.

When I was 28 I ran a bunch of 10K's and finished between 40:24 and 41. I was working so hard for a sub-40, but didn't have it. The last one was a September 40:24, and I was mentally crushed to get so close. Over the winter, once a week I did 200 or 400 meter repeats at 6 mpm pace. My first 10K of the season was in mid-April, I finished in 37:50, and I literally said out loud, "where did that come from?"

As you noted, when you're doing a bunch of 6 mpm repeats, speed and strength, when you race at 6:20 per mile it feels effortless.

Scott

Thanks for the big miles! You're really grinding them out.

Liz and Patrick

You're contributing well, thanks.

Martha, my dearest

I know the new job and today's entertainment are making it hard to put in miles and time, so thank you helping our side produce a result (you need to practice your soccer language for March 16  ).

Sorry team for not posting much. I had my first Exam in 1 and 1/2 years. Man was I stressing but I needent have worried, 100%. Well I am hoping to get more hours and miles in this coming week, running on the treadmill oddly reduces my stress. Well I am off to a good start 50 minutes of shoveling the drive, then 30 on the bike for my cross training, then 5 on the treadmill to stretch out the muscles that got tight on the bike, then 5 minutes of ab work. Tomorrow is a four mile long run, that I am going to chase with a 40 minute bike. I am really hoping to kick a tri courses but rather than have it hand mine back to me. It has done it in the past. Green Lakes I will conquer you. Plus I want to go sub 1h 25 minutes on Minnie. Beat Lynne's time from two years ago and maybe beat her.

Craig- I am glad you like the graphs they give me a visual representation of what I have been doing. Plus it helps me learn the program better for when I have to do graphs like that for my Forensic Science course.

To all the other Bunnies- All we can do is get our miles and hours in as best we can. I am so proud of everyone for coming this far in just a few short weeks. Yes Matt may be getting lots of miles in but so are we. So keep up the good work.

Martha- I felt like such a slug the past two weeks myself. I had that great first week then school and work seemed to get in the way but I now have a plan. My treadmill time is my me time, I read textbooks while biking and think of what to put next in my three page paper while shoveling snow. All you have to do is find a grove and try to stick to it but be flexible enough not to get too stressed when your grove goes away for a few days.

Well my fellow bunnies and honored guests, I should get back to that paper and then head on to bed. I will try to post more often.

The snow is still here--not melting yet except where we shovelled. I got to add 40 minutes of shovelling to this week's totals. That's about the only good thing about it. I was hoping to run outside today but the sidewalks are still a bit dicey so I will pass. Maybe tomorrow.

Erin: yup--I just gotta get out there and find my groove. I did have some fun yesterday as I ran 3 miles of speed work. 2 minutes slow 1 minute fast for 3 miles. It felt really good. I just hope I can get outside tomorrow rather than on the TM. We'll see.

I hope everyone is out there putting in those miles and minutes! Have a great day everyone!!!

So, do we get sightseeing points (hiking round forest looking for kangaroos and striding round city looking at 'not very interesting' buildings...- if so, I'm about to rack up a HUGE hourage for the 23rd February - koala hunting is very time consuming - especially when there's only 7 of them in a forest of about 7000 trees!!!!

If you are out walking as you look for the mighty Koala, then the time counts. The standing, pointing, and photographing time won't, so just keep track of the actual walking time.

Hello team!

Erin - congrats on the 100%!

Yesterday was 38 and sunny here so actually managed to walk outdoors! Good thing as now we have a winter storm warning up from 6p-noon tomorrow. Looks like I'll have shoveling time again.

Was feeling a bit down after yesterday's walk. One shin felt like it was cramping so had to slow down and didn't meet my goal time. When DH came in (he went further than me) told him didn't know why I even bothered. He wisely suggested coming out here and doing some reading/posting. Didn't stay on line long and didn't post but it did help put things back in perspective and made me realize that anything is better than nothing. I will not quick and I will in fact succeed!

Does running a fever or having a running nose count as exercise? If so I will have the most hours for this week! If not, sorry guys but I'm still not a huge contributor. (Just wait until the weather breaks here in MI!)

I have a total of one hour of walking. Again I can't calculate total miles because I am walking at work and my garmin doesn't work in the basement here. I should walk on the half mile loop they have set up, but it gets too crowded.

Good morning rabbits! (are we supposed to do something special for Easter? :rotfl: )

I'm going to attempt to be a more social teammate...forgive me for being so quiet around here lately...we've got such a great team!! 4th in hours and 2nd in miles as of this morning is pretty impressive...way to go everyone!!

Susan - Hang in there and get well soon! That virus is everywhere and seems to hang on for a while.

Kate - The vertigo does not sound pleasant to deal with...hoping you get well soon too!

Liz - Every mile counts! Glad the threads helped you out a bit...and take care of that shin. Are you stretching it out after the workouts?

Helen - How are things down under? Any photos of the elusive koala yet?

Jeff - GOOD LUCK this weekend buddy! Remember...that half counts as double miles :)

SteveOH - another consistently awesome week! You've been quiet though, everything alright in your world?

Martha - The snow and weather has messed everyone up this winter...hoping you can get outdoors (and away from the treaddie) soon!

Erin - 100% nice job!! Impressive workouts, too...doing the biking and running back to back. When is Green Lakes??

Krista - Always impressed by your numbers, having to workout for two all of the time! Nice job!! Hoping all is well with the baby and it's mom (and Steve too!)...

Craig - thanks for those solid weeks! Almost time to start ramping up for the Minnie Weekend...are we planning on a bunny convention?

Amy - awesome job there partner! Love how you've diversified your workouts this year with the spin classes and the speed work...guess I need to get my butt in gear or I'll be playing catch up with you during the Minnie events :goodvibes:

Those I missed - keep up the great work...get better if your are ill...and remember every mile and minute counts!

So....I've been dealing with a shin-something-or-other for the past week, along with some sort of sinus thing...so I didn't run, but I found out that the bike and elliptical can really rack up the miles!! May be time to hang up the Asics and start training for a century (for the better good of us rabbits)!!

Fortunately (or not), I did my first run in a week last night on the treadmill, did 6 miles at 9:13 pace and everything felt really good...thus putting an end to the cross training inflated numbers. The good news is that I'm over 50 miles and 6 hours already this week :goodvibes:

Hope everyone is having a great week!

:) Thanks for signing me on! I have just finished reading your bios, and now know I am surrounded by some real athletes! Great! I am 40 and have been running for 28 years (for fun and fitness). This past year I have been strength training in a gym a couple times a week, and have found it to virtually elimimate my lower back pain (yes!). Also, it seems that my enhanced core strength now comes to my rescue in shorter races -- arms pumping up a storm -- since I am not a fast runner.

I look forward to getting to know you all over the months and miles. I'll need some help livening up my posts (your guys' look great), since all I know how to do so far is add "smilies."

Please give me a couple days to figure out how to post my miles and hours, too.

As far as Disney races go, I have run the marathon once (mid-90s), and did Goofy the last two years. I ran Minnie last year, too. I am heading for the Minnie in May, and will be back to run Goofy in '09.

I travel solo to WDW several times a year and sure do hope to connect with my fellow 'Wabbits.'

Best to you all, and thanks again for having me aboard!

Teri

Scott and Amy--Aww, guys, thanks for your concern. Stephen and I are doing great, Stephen is working A LOT and I'm just tired all the time. :) My numbers this week have been less than stellar because I'm having trouble sleeping (can't get comfortable), so I come home from work exhausted and lay on the couch all night. But I still have 3 more days to get those numbers up, right? :) But everything with the baby is going great (I'm getting nice and fat ;) ), I go back to the doctor on Friday for my 16 week checkup and I get to schedule my sonogram. YAY!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Teri--WELCOME!!!! So glad that you are a bunny!!

Hello Teri

Welcome to you and your miles/hours. I'm keeping the score sheet so all you need to do is post your weekly results here. The weeks began on Friday, Feb 1 and run to each Thursday, so this week, if you could send me your miles from this Friday to Thursday, and your hours in decimals, I'll get them in.

The miles are all miles, walking, running, biking, and swimming. The hours are all CV or strength workout time, so for example a common workout for me is 30 minutes of weight work and 30 minutes on a bike, so I report 60 minutes and around 7.75 miles for this workout.

I am doing the Goofy again in 2009, as well as the Minnie 15K. There will be a few males in the Minnie crowd, thankfully, so I won't need to cross dress to get into the race.

Scott

What are you shooting for in the 15K? Right now I suspect I'll finish around 83 minutes. Will you be running a similar pace?

Helen

So how big was that lizard? Komodo dragon sized :scared1: ?

Yeah, I believe we'll be in that ballpark...somewhere between 8:30 and 9:00. I've been pretty strong in my 8 mile Sunday runs, hovering around the 8:20 mark and I think I can PR both the 10k (current best is 49:47) and 5k (24:32) that I have coming up in March. In the Minnie, I'll be keeping pace with Amy...I guess we'll have a better idea of what our time goal is once things get a little closer...we're doing both the 5k and 15k but I don't think it'll have quite the draining effect that the half/full combo did in January ;)

In other words....he'll be slowing down for me! :rotfl: I don't know if I can hang on to my 8:43 pr from my 5 Mile race in November...not sure that will translate to the 15K so well. But hopefully adding the speedwork and ramping up my XT will help to make me stronger. :confused3 Seems to me that we'll be gunning for a similar pace Craig. Parrot Head Rabbits unite! :thumbsup2

Hi Teri and welcome! :wave2:
Glad to have you on our team!

I'll be doing my first 1/2 in Jan and also doing the ToT -you know as a warm up. And any excuse to get to WDW is good by me. :thumbsup2
As it is we average 3 trips a year so not too bad.

Look forward to getting to know you and meeting up sometime!

A question about hours/miles this week....

Do we include tomorrow Feb 29 in the hours/miles for this week? Are we suppose to stick with Fri-Thurs and let tomorrow's miles count toward the month of March?:confused3

Kathy

Really good question. I just looked at the sheet Darcey built, and each month is self contained. I will need your numbers for the last days of February, up to the 29th, so I'm looking for Friday through Friday this week.

Scott

When I run shorter stuff I can honestly say I never leave anything out there on the course. I was really pleased with my 72:05 Tower of Terror effort, but if it had been 13.1 K, I would have collapsed. I'm probably one of the runners who had near accidents with the walkers doing the 6.5K, hopefully not on purpose, it's just in the last 200 meters I was pushing as hard as I could and had no ability to avoid anything.

With this in mind, your 8:20 pace is out of my league. That is a 77:41 finish, which I cannot possibly do. I suspect 8:50 is possible, an 82:20 finish. I'll try to run between 8:50 and 9:00 mpm and see if I have anything left at the end. I would sure love to run from the Beach Club to the finish with power and speed, after all the horrible last miles I've done in the marathons.

Amy

So it does look like you and I could be incredibly well matched for the distance. If Scott wants to slow down for us, I'd sure welcome him. It's always amazing what you can do with someone on your shoulder, yet it's hard to find a perfect pace match. I'll be looking for you 2 at 6 a.m. May 4.

Parrotheads unite, indeed, excellent idea, I do at least pretend I live the lifestyle. As you noted in the other thread, surfing belongs in this life style. So does flying, and 3.5 years ago I jumped into it with enthusiasm. I loved it, completely loved it, plus if Jimmy can do it, so can I. After 3 months of flying I discovered the difference between Jimmy and me. He is rich, I am not. I added up what I had spent, mulitplied that by 4, figured out what that would be on a yearly pre-tax income basis, and blanched. So for now I'll stay with the less expensive components of Parrothead Nation.

Scott - I am stretching after work outs (sometimes even before) but having trouble finding a stretch that actually hits the shin. Seems like most I wind up feeling more in the calf. Of course I could be doing something wrong. :confused3 Pain is in the front and to the outside. Funny thing is if I start to jog it goes away. Of course jogging brings on a whole 'nother set of problems.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Well Hello to our Newest Member Teri. You will find that we are a very inviting group. I have ramped up the miles this week and it looks like sub 10 min miles is within my grasp. Was going 6.7 on the treadmill for the run segments and 4.7 for the walk, I do 4 run and 1 walk. I felt like I could have gone farther at that pace too but I had the little devil in the back of my mind reminding me about the 8 miler I have to do on Saturday.:sad1: But I am going to try to do the 8 miler with the tready at 6.6 and 4.7 and see how it goes.

Well I signed xterratri and myself up for a local four miler on the 8th of March and for the Martian Half Marathon today. We are going to get our Minnie Registrations out soon as well. As for the Green Lakes Tri it is late June. Has A hill that can only be described as hellish, it is not long but man is it steep. I ride my brakes on the way down and hit 30-35mph. So I am hoping with doing the bike training I will conquer the hill with enough left in me for a sub 30 min 5K.

Now enough about me. In answer to the stetching Question I learned a trick from my college CC coach. When sitting down with your legs flat out in front of you point your toes and then try to reach them. This is my sure fire cure for shin splints. As much as I disliked that coach he did leave me with some very valuable lessons that I carry with me. Even though I am doing something very novel for this year ad training to race. I hope that this trick helps you out like it has helped me.

Hi Bunnies:flower3: how you are? (My best Cajun accent)

Has everyone had a good month? Your friendly Panda is doing better and can start contributing miles to his team now. I know that y'all have been concerned that I had to much time on my hands.

Starting next month, which is in a few days we are going to have a new thread about either adding something or subtracting something form our lifestyle plan. Everyone can post from all the teams and maybe each of us can get ideas of what we could change ourselves. It will also give us a group thread to keep up with the fact that we are all part of the same larger team.

Erin - Thanks a bunch for that stretching info...seems that shin/front of leg stretches are pretty hard to find and that seems like a pretty good one. Good luck on the 4 mile race coming up!! I'll be racing the same day in a local 10k...go rabbits!

Teri - Welcome aboard!! Another Minnie/Goofy person on the team...us rabbits sure are gonna log the training miles this fall :goodvibes:

Liz - Funny...my discomfort was in the front and to the inside...like you, while running it felt fine...when I stopped it started hurting! A week away from the pavement seemed to help as my last two runs have been pain free. I'm going to incorporate Erin's stretch suggestion for sure.

Craig - Sounds great! We'll be easy to spot as we'll be in full bunny costumes for the 15k. (Amy, we're still doing that, right? :rotfl: )

Sure is nice to get an extra day to log miles this week!! I'll be back tomorrow night with my final week + a day tally :goodvibes:

Hope everyone is doing well!

Good morning Team! I need to apologize for being an absent, non-posting team member. Life (work in particular) has been crazy busy this week. I'm in the airport right now heading to Boston for the day, and since I have my wireless card, I knew this would be the only chance I'd get to post my miles for the week.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to keep up with the team this week. It looks like everyone is doing pretty well. And welcome, Teri! So glad you could join us.

Ok, even though work's been crazy, I've been able to get in some miles this week. Here are my totals (including today, Friday--I managed to get up at 3:15am to get an hour of biking in, and I will say that this little game was the only thing that motivated me to clip in the biking shoes in the middle of the night :sad2: ):

71 miles
8.5 hours

I didn't get any swimming in, but the good thing is that the extra biking sessions added much more to our miles total than swimming would have. :)

Hope everyone has a good weekend. I will get on here to post and catch up with everyone tomorrow or Sunday. Have a great Friday, team!

My 8 Day Week:

Miles: 17.64
Hours: 4:41 (4.68)

I had a good week, and managed to run/walk every second day, and walk on the in between days. I'm transitioning to running a full 5 minutes continuously (I'm doing couch to 5K Week 4).

We finished making our DVC reservation for Animal Kingdom Villas in September, so DH and I will be registering for the Expedition Everest Challenge. We're excited about that!

Hey guys--I know we're not supposed to really "look" at the score on the overall spreadsheet (kind of like when they don't keep score in 5 year old soccer games :) ), but do you realize that we absolutely rock!!! I just checked Donald's Defiant Daschunds or whatever their name is and they're the only team ahead of us in miles and they have way more people reporting their miles already for this week. So.....we're in good shape to win this month on miles. :cool1: Honestly, I know it doesn't matter because we really are all winners, but it's ok to gloat when we stomp the other teams once in awhile, isn't it?? ;)

Good job, team!

Steve

PS--now where are the rest of our totals for this week? I'm going to have to keep refreshing this thread to see when the totals come in so I can manually add them in my head.

(((Stepping in here nervously)))

Hi everyone, I see a couple familiar faces here - (amy & scott), My name is Stacy -- and well, i don't know what to say but i am a complete newbie to this -- so if anyone is at the bottom of the list on this team it will surly be me! LOL

I turned 30 in November, and decided it was time to take more control of my health - I have started the C25K program with the Minnie 5k in May as my first goal.. (hey gotta start somewhere right?) Since i have started training, i have lost about 15lbs, and feel an obvious more endurance.. however, i have slacked lately (i guess to many Disney related vacations) and need to jump back in as the minnie is only 2 mo. away...

I am totally new to the team thing -- so not really sure how/what to report.. but i will give it my best. Since it's yucky snowy here today, i am hoping to jump on the TM later this afternoon -- however, i do a walk/run routine, so how do i count that? Do i go by miles or minutes or what?
(sorry for the dumb newbie questions!!)

Thanks everyone, looking forward to knowing you all!

Thanks for the numbers for March 21-29 that I've received so far. I have put them in the score sheet.

Caitsmama

Welcome. What I need from you is your miles and hours (in decimal form) each week. We are starting a new month, so today, March 1, is the first day of the reporting week.

On or soon after March 7, please send me your total miles for the week, being all miles of CV work (run, walk, bike, swim) and the total hours you worked out (run, walk, bike, swim, lifting, yoga, pilates, spin, whatever). And please tell us your real name, we are definately on a first name basis here.

I will pick up the data and put it in the master excel score sheet.

Take care

Well I managed to get in more miles and more time than DH, Mike (Optimator) this week. I don't know how that happened - I don't think it'll happen again anytime soon - he's scheduled to do a 20 mile run this weekend  But I'm very excited that I was able to keep up with him for just one week.

My totals for the week...

30 miles
273 minutes
