Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Welcome to our slightly new format!

I'll be keeping up the WISH list in the Bios/Pics thread (thanks to Matt for the Bios/Pics thread!) We'll waste a little less bandwidth by not reposting it each week. Please stop by and tell us all about yourself!

And don't miss out on 2008 WWDave's Miles/Minutes game! If you haven't signed up for a team yet, there's still time!

Updated Team Rosters (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1699751)

What a difference lower humidity makes! I did 3.1 miles today in 37:28. Would've been better, but I had a side stitch I had to walk through at right before mile 2.

Welcome disneyrun!! We're going to try to make the encore of Spirit of the Marathon too!

Amanda...congrats on the shuffle! How was your TM run?

Scott...dude, I'm tired just reading your workout schedule!

ms.duck...I usually try to have a rest day after my LR, especially during those high mileage weeks. You need some time for the muscles to repair. Maybe Sunday would be the best for your LR.

How was the Krispy Kreme challenge? Can't wait to hear about it!

Jeanne...don't let anyone diminish your accomplishment! You can always mention all the runners you sped by during the last 6 miles (me included!)

Angie...love the new shoes! I wear ASICS and usually go up half a size.

Christy...did you used to live in Brevard County or am I making that up?

Howard...congrats on your run! Hope the shin splints get all worked out!

Kira...wow, sounds like a busy day! I don't remember being tired a lot when I first started...hungry is another story ;-) If your fatigue persists, pop into your primary care provider for some bloodwork.

Kim...welcome back! Big Sur sounds cool!

SWDave...good luck with that ITB!

I think Debra mentioned this and I'm considering it too...anyone transition from a R/W to a run? Carrie, did you and Scott do this the first year? Any advantages to the full run from a R/W? I find as I get more tired during the really LR, it seems a lot harder to start up each new run interval.

Shirt update: RaceReady is offering 25% off catalog prices, but by the time you add in the setup and printing fees, it essentially works out to catalog prices, so just go by those. We'll need a minimum of 30 shirts to order and can mix styles, so if we want tanks and tshirts we don't have to have 30 of each. I have an email to them regarding turnaround time and art setup. Chester says they run a little small. Sizing info is available on their website. http://www.raceready.com

eye2eye is working on a design proposal. I'll pass it along as soon as I receive it.

Good training everyone!

I did 9 Miles today in 1 and a half hours, but not on a treadmill as mine at this point is toast. Even with it being 21 and feeling like 13 I really enjoyed my run. Being outdoors really brings great joy to my runs so I'm very happy that I forced myself to do it.

I hope everyone's Events went well today/tomorrow!

Hi folks!

I've been kinda MIA since getting back from WDW. I've been a total slug - done nothing. With playing catch-up at work and being tired from training, I decided to give myself the rest of January off. So, I have 4 days left to chill, then back to the work-outs.

I'll admit that I have been scoping out possible races to do this year. I'd like to get a race schedule together for the entire year, so I know how to plan and have some goals to shoot for.

I'm sticking to shorter races this year (1/2's and less) to work on transitioning from w/r to all run (albeit a slow run). I've even got my eye on a couple tri's.

My question for you all is: How often do you enter race events? I've been on-line looking at events and I'll see one that looks cool, then another, and another. If I went with my initial list, I'd be entering a race every week:rolleyes: (we all know that's not gonna happen!) Do you enter once a month, every other week, every other month? I know it depends on the distance, too, but what would be optimum? I don't want to overtax my body, but I'm itching to get out and enter something soon! (of course I don't know how my pocketbook is gonna handle this either. Wasn't this supposed to be a FREE sport?)

I'm in for 2 shirts, will be watching the board for when you are ready for orders!

I finally got outside yesterday for the first time. I began the Couch to 5K yesterday and I was so glad I did. I have been using our elliptical glider all month because it has been SO cold outside! But yesterday wasn't so bad and with the mittens and ear warmers it was fine.

I tried running late last summer, not following any kind of program. I got tired fast, didn't like it, felt like I couldn't do it. I think spending the time on the elliptical really has helped me get ready for a better "take two" at this. I was able to do what I was supposed to yesterday (60 seconds jogging/90 seconds walking). I need to get a watch to time, I was just estimating. I went around my loop twice which was a mile. I felt like I could have done more!

I'm excited at the thought of by the end of March *I* could actually run 3 miles! Baby steps right? Good thing we are starting this now because 13.1 miles in January sounds like ALOT!:yay: :yay:

Allyson,

"Baby Steps" is right. I'm doing the same thing. Yesterday did my 6minutes run/2 minutes walk to finsih my three miles. I should have been outdoors, but it was snowing, (I know, no excuse since last week I ran in colder weather), but I did it at the gym on a treadmill. And what should be on TV but a performance on the Today show by Ariel from Little Mermaid (Broadway version). So I'm running and mouthing the lyrics-LOL! And I felt great after I was done--didn't even feel like I ran. So maybe this will work after all!

I did 9 Miles today
Chris - Oh now that just makes me feel like the ultimate slacker. I ran 4 yesterday. The problem is that I still don't get warmed up until I run about 5 miles so its easy to quit before I even feel good. But you have motivated me! I am going to run 8 on Tuesday.

Hi folks!
My question for you all is: How often do you enter race events?
Terri - I have 3 half marathons planned for this spring. 3/1,3/30 and 4/26. Immediately after the 4/26 I will jump into marathon training for Marine Corp and then either the marathon of Goofy at Disney. That training will probably include a couple half marathon races.

Also, I have a couple 10k's thrown in there for fun. Atlanta hosts the Peachtree Road race every July 4th and that is not to be missed. Every slow runner should put it on their list. My first year I was amazed when I finished and an HOUR later we went back past the finish and it looked like a start line there were so many people still floodiing in. Definately an ego boosting experience.

OK - THE SUN IS SHINING - its NOT snowing!! Its above freezing... (maybe 30 deg F, not sure if there is a windchill yet!!)

I'm going to go out there - yes, I'm going... 2 miles... or 3 depending on how icy the trail is!!

Allyson WOOHOO!! baby steps indeed, I sure feel like I'm starting all over again... I cant believe I signed up for another 1/2 in august - I dont know how I'm going to do it now!!

Teri this is easy for me - whatever my future daughter in law gets me to agree to!! :rotfl: She really wanted to do the Samrock Shuffle, and I really wanted to do the CDC ('cause last August I wasnt in any kind of shape to do 1/2 and WISHers came in... so maybe?) She is trying to talk me into a 5K this June, which I'm sure she'll be able to do, she's quite persuasive!!

Good Morning TEAMmates: :surfweb:

I'm waking up today. Thanks for everyone's good WISHes on my hip. I don't know whether it's an ITB syndrome or hip bursitis, but I'm going to take it easy. No running for me this week. I'm going to stick exclusively to the exercise bike. I did 60 min on the bike yesterday.

Mel- Thanks for looking into the race ready shirts. I would definitely be interested in a singlet and a T. You were asking about transitioning from R/W to all run. I did that after the Marine Corps Marathon, and I think that's another reason I've irritated my hip. Too fast too soon for me...

Maura- Great job on your run. Wow, Ariel from Broadway on the Today Show? That would have been cool to see.

Allyson- No more of saying you should have been outside. You were exercising, and that's what matters. Good for you.

Terri- Are you going to be around for the Philly Marathon, or do you have to work that one? It'd be great to have you join us for that one, and we can get your expertise on the city.

goofyinohio- Great job on your 9 miler in 90 min! That's awesome.

disneyrun- Welcome to the team! Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham is a book that many of us have used and liked. It got me to the starting line from the couch for my first marathon (Disney of course) in Jan 07.

GinnyFavers- I love working out the DIS Unplugged Podcast. There's so many times I'm laughing outloud. How'd your 4.5 miles go?

Scott- Wow, I can't believe how well your training's going just a week out from Goofy. What did you decide to do today - 6 or 8?

Jeff- Thanks for sharing your pictures. I'll have to wander over there and look.

KiraG.- Good luck with your work week. Sounds like you've been really busy with it lately. I love having a great run to get away from life stressors. Have fun out there.

Stacey- I didn't hear anything about the Expedition Everest 5K. Thanks for posting it. I'll have to check out the details! :thumbsup2 Oh, looks like it Sept. - I think we may be down there in August, so we'll miss it. Shoot.

Howard- Nice job on your 3 miles. Ice those shins.

Hi DianeL- I haven't seen you over here for a while. So were your Pal Mickeys along for the ride with you during marathon weekend this year?

OK, sorry to all those I missed, but just know I'm thinking of you. Have a great day everyone.

Hi everyone!

I'll admit it, I've been a total slug too! I feel burned out after spending so much time training so I've been taking it easy. Unfortunately, I've been really sick the last few days. The virus going around work attacked my throat and neck and on Friday morning my throat was so swollen, my voice was coming out in a whistle! Sure made an impression at the urgent care facility. The doc first said he hoped it was strep so he had something to treat (nope, wasn't that) then said he hoped it was an ear infection so he could treat that (after washing out the ear to remove the wax [which was excruciatingly painful], it wasn't that either) he declared it to be a virus and apologized profusely since there was nothing he could do. Oh, and my throat was not in danger of swelling shut. I was glad to hear that. Each day has brought a new symptom and today it's a stiff neck. It's just so much fun!

I also learned the meaning of true love: it's when your studmuffin (aka Calcio) comes into the doctor's office and holds your hand while the doctor is washing out your very painful ear. He kept me from bolting from the room. He's the best. :love2:

Sandy321: sure rub it in! It's snowing here now. Have fun in the sun!

Cruella de mom: geez, now I feel like a slacker! 3 half marathons planned within a 6-week time period, then training for 2 marathons! I was feeling smug about the Minnie, ToT and the WDW Half! Maybe I should replan my races.

Maura: congrats on the 3 miles! If you felt good when finished, it was a good run! I haven't run since the marathon. I was waiting until February to start running again but reading about how so many people are running again makes me think I should start a little sooner. Then again, maybe not.

Allyson: yes, you can absolutely do this! Good for you for starting again. I know you can do this. Baby steps is right. Think in small chunks of time not far away. Set a goal, reasonable goal that is, for the next 4 weeks. Then think about the next 4 weeks. You'll get there. And let us know how you are doing! :cheer2:

Terri: it sure sounds like we are both using the same manual for training right now! Let us know what races you enter.

goofyinohio: :thumbsup2 on the 9 miles and outdoors to boot! Makes me look really like a slug!!!

Mel and Lily: I like the new format. Thanks for making it happen!!

We are taking DD out for lunch for her birthday celebration. She likes to go to Cheesecake Factory so we'll leave in a few hours. Have a great weekend everyone and happy training!

Hi everyone. I'm not new to the DIS, but I am new to the WISH boards. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and I'm really impressed by how supportive and friendly everyone is. So, I guess it's time to introduce myself.

My name is Julie and I must be crazy. ;) DH (Rob) has convinced me to run the WDW Marathon in 2009. DH ran Boston back in 1999, and he runs a couple of shorter races and a half marathon every year. I've never run more than a couple of miles in my life and I haven't run regularly since before my oldest child was born (and she's 8 now :scared1: ). I really want to get in shape and after reading a lot of the posts here, I'm really looking forward to running the marathon. It just seems so weird to even say/type those words since I've never been much of a runner.

I've been running for about 3 weeks now. I've worked up to 2.5 miles, 3 times a week. I've been doing about a 15 min mile, but hopefully that will get better as time goes by.

I feel like I've already learned a lot from reading the WISH boards over the past few weeks and I'm looking forward to "meeting" you and learning a whole lot more! :goodvibes

We have a few more slots open now on the Miles/Hours game since Craig has stepped up to captain team 8. So if you wanna play, El Supreme Ruler Craig and his lady need some team mates.

Feel better Martha. Darn work anyway.

Have a great day y'all.

Allyson/Maura - I ran my first 5K at Disney in May '06, then ran halfheartedly until Jan '07 when I decided I had to do the half in '08. I was barely comfortable with 3 miles at the time then, so it's absolutely believable that you'll be doing 13.1 next January! This group will get you there. :cool1:

Terri - I'm trying to decide the same thing. There are so many races I want to do, but I can't justify spending half our income on entry fees! I'm looking at a half on 3/8 right now just to keep me motivated.

MSDave - Sounds like you're playing it safe - and smart! Please be careful.

Martha - Feel better soon!

Julie - :welcome: Sounds like you're off to a great start. Be careful not to do too much too soon - I went overboard when I started and ended up having to take several weeks off to recover from severe shin splints.

3035 runners did the Krispy Kreme run yesterday! Here's the link to the story in our local paper:

Hey all... last night I was able to swim laps while DH and my girls were doing open swim right next to me. We were lucky because the lap lanes were empty and not too many people were in open swim either. So I would swim a bunch of laps, swim and play with the family and repeat! I wish I could have gotten in more swimming during marathon training. I think it really would have helped me. That is my goal for 2008.... new cross training workouts!!!!

Mel - The farthest I have run without walk breaks is 4 miles. I tend to run slower tho. But I want to work at longer run segments this year. Marathon training really stopped me from doing that last fall because I needed to walk more with those long long runs!

SWDave - I hope your hip/leg gets better soon. My PF flared up during the marathon and I had fears of months of pain to follow. It's all better now, but I know injuries are horrible.

Martha - When I came home to sub zero temps after WDW I thought for sure I would be sick. So far just DD4 has a cold (tho she kisses me all the time so you know I will get it!!)

WELCOME all new WISHers!!!!!!

Hi everyone,

Congrats to all on your training! Everyone is keeping up great.

I wasn't able to do the miles I set out to walk last night because at around 2.5 miles, something in my left shoulder started cramping up really bad.

I was prepared for leg and foot fatigue, but arms? That caught me by surprise.

I made it to 3 miles.

I'm not really sure what's best to do for someone my size, significantly overweight... should I be walking as fast as I can for short periods, or slower for long periods, or a little of both?

I'm alternating walking days with Pilates days right now.

Would love to hear y'all's input on building pace/miles and on your arms cramping up from swinging them. (I really wasn't swinging them that hard or wildly, not chicken winging etc... just like a normal walking swing, hands down at my hip level.)

Terri - Hi from a newbie & fellow Philadelphian! I just registered for the Philadelphia Distance Run in September - it looks like a really fun race, and there are a couple of other folks from here doing that one. I'm debating whether to do the half at the Philadelphia Marathon, or do smaller races between the PDR & the WDW half. I'm new to this so not yet sure how to pace myself.

Thanks to everyone who wished me well about my work week. This is my busiest time of year for admissions. It can get crazy sometimes!

Off to do my run!

Jackie: We did the KK run yesterday! I looked for you, but didn't see you. It was quite an experience. Wendy wrote up a great report (with photos!) and posted it on the race reports thread. I took my dozen donuts and brought them home. I thought I would eat at least one during the race just to get into the spirit, but when I got to the KK store on Peace St and saw all those college kids gorging, I kinda lost my appetite! If you didn't sign up for the Challenge (do the 4 miles and eat the whole dozen within an hour) it was pretty much just a fun run for charity. They only recorded times for the challenge people which was a good thing because I don't think they were equipped to handle the over 3000 people that participated.

Hi everyone!

I was just reading some of the replies in the "I'm Shocked" thread and Craig and Cecilia mentioned runners who cheat(ed) at marathons. I can't say that I'm totally surprised by this but .....wow! I wonder if this happens more than I think? I personally can't understand this. For me, at least, it's a personal matter to see if I can do it at all and then to be able to do it in regulation time and eventually, to be able to do it with a certain time goal. I just don't get it. However, if there's some magical pixie dust out there that will enable me to go faster so I can skip these hard workouts, then please, let me know. JK!

Ginny - not sure about the arms. I wonder if you are leaning over too much while walking? I've noticed in the past that when I leaned over, my shoulders would be sore. I mainly do strength training (arms and legs) for my XT days so I think that's helped me. I would love to incorporate some pilates in the mix. As for what you need to do, training-wise - there are some good Websites out there (runnersworld, Jeff Galloway's, Hal Higdons, and others) that can help you out and also some good books. I have John Bingham's Running for Mortals and Marathoning for Mortals. Another good one, I've heard, is Courage to Start by JB. All of these books, as well as others out there, have good, solid recommendations for starting out.

Chris - wow on the 9 miles in 1.5 hours! That's great. I'm going to do ~7 miles today....maybe. I'm looking at almost 2 hours for that.

Terri - I hear you on the events and the $$$ that goes with them. There are so many that I would like to do but my pocketbook is definitely feeling the crunch. I'm thinking about the Nike Women's half again - it's the 5th anniversary. Are you considering it? If I don't do that, then I might do the Philadelphia Distance Run. Maybe. I'd get a special medal for doing that and the San Antonio run in November. So many events, so little $$$. :(

Allyson - sounds like you are off to a good start! :thumbsup2 Keep up the good work! Baby steps, yes!

Dave - :wizard: for your hip. Ouch!

Martha - :wizard: for you! There's a lot of nasty stuff going around down here, too! I just have the sniffles for now. I hope to keep it at that.

Julie - welcome! You can do the marathon! Sounds like you've got a built in coach as well. :teeth:

Jeanne - the KK race sounds fun! As for the gorging -. I'd hate to see these same people after the race. :crazy2:

Jen - with your swimming - you ought to consider a tri - or have you done one already?

Scott - Thanks, at some point, this will be true. I only actually logged 76 miles to train for this years Goofy. Not all were what I would call "running." ;)

Mel - Thanks, I think the SS's are due to the TM and the abuse I give my lower legs. I am a chronic fool in not stretching enough (or at all) before a run. :rolleyes1 :headache:

Jeff - I checked out your photos. You did a great job of capturing the mood of the race and everything in it. I think I saw a few photos of Steve (SilverE) in there too, he must have been near you a few times. Thanks for sharing them!

I don't have a serious race in my future until Fall '08. In the mean time, I will be running local 5K's as time permits. I think the first one I enjoy running in is in March.

Happy training everyone!

Hi everyone! I just got back from an 8 mile run. My first LR since the marathon, and I have to say it felt good. I was worried about heading out for LR but it went well.

That Krispy Kreame race sounds crazy...not sure I could stomach eating a dozen donuts and running 4 miles!! I may have gotten sick just watching people do that...so kudos to all those that did that race yesterday!!

Sorry, don't have more time to catch up..I will check in later!

Susie - I may consider a mini-tri, but I am not a very fast swimmer. DH wants to do a tri, he is a good swimmer and biker but can't run at all. After his knee surgery in June the doctor said no more running over a 5K. OK to be honest, DH was never a runner to begin with. He walked/ran a 5K in April last year... his first and last. So I am telling him to smoke the swimming and biking and walk the running part!!!!

I was wondering if anyone did the KK Challenge. So Jeanne, did you carry the donuts 2 miles to the finish? Did you get a cool shirt for doing it??

Chris - Great Job on your run!

Maura, Allyson and Julie - Welcome. Way to go on your training. Just stick with a program and you'll be fine!

Cruella - You go, Girl! I Wish I could get my body to be that ambitious!:worship:

Jen - I'm hoping to increase my running intervals and do less walking, too. It seems that when I take my walk breaks, especially in longer distance races, I have a hard time running again. The body doesn't want to move.

Dave -pixiedust: Sending PD for your hurts! I'm always willing to provide my expertise. Ask your Philly questions! I'll be at the Philly Marathon cheering on any Wishers who are coming, provided there is not an Eagles home game (gotta cheer on my other team, too! :) ) I don't think I'm entering this event because I'm planning on doing the 1/2 at the inaugural San Antonio event, the week before.

Susie - Yes, come do the Philly Distance Run. I'm planning on SA, too. If you do the Philly race and any other RnR event, they send you a cool Liberty Bell Dynamic Duet medal. :cool1: I'm not doing the Nike event this year.

Martha - hope you're feeling better. Tell DD :bday: I love the Cheesecake factory, too!

Kira - :wave2: Hi neighbor! I think I'll be joining you for the Distance Run!

OK, since I put my marathoning career on hold, I'm going to focus on 1/2's and shorter races this year to build up my endurance more and increase my running segments. Eventually, I'd be thrilled if I could run (however slowly) the entire 1/2. My membership in the 50/50 club (50 marathons in 50 states) will have to wait. So I figure I'd try for the 50/50 for half marathons (gotta have a goal, so why not?) If I get better at the running I can always add the marathons back in and go for their 50/50. That should keep me working towards a goal for the rest of my life  .

So after looking at races on-line and trying to figure what my body and budget could afford for this year, I've come up with this tentative schedule (all but 2 are within driving distance, so it won't break the budget):

June 08 Local 10K race (I can warm up for this by walking the 1 mile from my house to the start/finish area) :)

June 08 Philadelphia Sprint Triathlon (If I can convince myself to jump in the Schuylkill River)

August 08 SheRox Triathlon (see above)

August 08 Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon (much happier swimming in the ocean) ;)

Sept. 08 Philadelphia Distance Run

October 08 Atlantic City 1/2 Marathon (the event is celebrating it's 50th year)

November 08 Inaugural San Antonio Marathon and 1/2 (I'm doing the 1/2)

I'm thinking about doing the RnR Arizona 1/2 in January 09. Sadly, that will mean no WDW event for me :sad2: But I think I need a break to take the pressure off so I'll be ready for the Goofy in 2010.

I was wondering if anyone did the KK Challenge. So Jeanne, did you carry the donuts 2 miles to the finish? Did you get a cool shirt for doing it??

Wendy, John and I all carried the donuts back....as did most of the participants. KKs usually come in these big flat boxes so the glaze doesn't rub off, but yesterday we got the dozen in more compact boxes that were easier to carry. Most runners just put them under their arm (yeecchh), but we came prepared with little drawstring bags. Everybody who participated got a nice white T-shirt that said Krispy Kreme Challenge and listed the sponsors.
The people who actually ate the doughnuts got a nice green one that said something like "I completed the KKC". I guess that was their version of a finishers "medal". Trust me, I think alot of those people were able to complete the run faster than the time it took them to eat the doughnuts. I came in just about at the hour mark and there were alot of runners after me that were going into the doughnut eaters chute. I hope they all got the shirt even if it took them more than an hour. I'm not sure how strict they were about that but maybe Wendy knows.

That looks cool! My $$$ is the problem. I would race every weekend if my budget would allow it.
Ran 15 yesterday. I can tell that was the longest run I have done this year.

I am a little torn about signing up for a miles team. I get in plenty of miles in...but I can see me forgetting to post them. What do you guys think?

I would also like to order two of the shirts when we are ready to order.

Does anyone know how you find out for sure that you are registered for the Marathon/ Half Marathon for Disney? I thought there was a confirmation page, but I don't see it.

Today has been a nice family day so no running or walking for me.

So this morning Mom and I went over to the gym for a 30 minute workout. Well I really seemed overdressed, capris and 2006 Donald shirt. I over heated about 15 min into my run, GRR, I guess that teaches me. From now on I will take a short sleeve top and short to the gym. But I did remember to bring water this time. I went right about 5k in my 35 minutes, even with the over heating issues. I then went out into the 30 degree weather to try to cool down a bit, it worked.

Terri- It looks like a good race schedule to me.

Howard- Good luck training this semester.

Mel- Thank you for doing all the leg work for the new shirts.

This week has been going better than last, school work is getting better. Welcome to all the new Wish team members.

Christy...did you used to live in Brevard County or am I making that up?

Me Christy?? If so, nope, I have always lived in either Orange or Seminole County (well, since I was 2 anyways):)

I did my first cardio today--7.66 miles on the bike and 2 miles (walking) on the treadmill. It felt good, now I just have to keep it up.

Lily--if my chance your DH mentions the crazy WISHer's child who attacked him in the Laundry room, I might know who that was:rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Good afternoon WISHers!

Was able to get in 2 miles on the TM this afternoon. The ball of my left foot is still pretty tender. Guess I need to toughen up the new skin.

Other than that, a pretty boring Sunday afternoon. No racing, no football. :confused3 Boring! :rotfl:

Y'all take care.

Chris--Great job on your run today, I can not even imagine those temps!

Terri--I do about 1 race per month, but in the summer, when it is a million degrees out, there are not a lot of races around here, so I am stuck on the treadmill

Allyson--I LOVE the Couch to 5K program, I will never forget how great I felt when I completed that 20 min run. Me the girl who could not run a mile in high school (40 pounds ago), could run almost 2 without stopping.

Sandy--I hope you had a great run!

Dave--Good Luck finding the source of your pain and fast healing!

Martha--Get well soon!!

Julie--WELCOME!!!!!! It sounds like you are doing great!!!

I will have to catch up with everyone else in a bit, gotta get the boys to Church for Choir practice!

Hello...my name is Amy....and I'm a slacker.

STILL trying to get back into running since Goofy! I've been getting my core work in (approx 8 hours of pilates/yoga) and one sad little 2 mile run....but that's about all I can say. SOOOO...this week I will get back into the swing of things and try to post a solid week of training. Wish me luck! ;)

Angie: Hope the run went well. :goodvibes

Terri: OMG...I'm doing the SheRox too :thumbsup2 . I just got talked into it by my SIL. I'm scared as heck. The swimming makes me super nervous. I'm a decent swimmer but not a competitive swimmer. Yikes!!!

Christa and Matt: thanks guys for the tri training advice. I'm nervous...but I think I'm taking the plunge. My crazy SIL is talking me into it.

Laurie: You rock...way to get out there girl. :cool1: Nope...you didn't see me out there on the trail because I'm a big huge slacker. :rolleyes1

Can I borrow some of the Wish Team's motivation??? You guys are all amazing...great job getting the runs in team. Can anyone loan me some motivation? Please ;)

No training for me this weekend. My official Minnie training starts tomorrow. I bought John Bingham's "Training for Mortals" logbook, and I put in all my training information today. I look forward to getting back into training mode. I just wanted to stop in and say hi to all my WISH team friends. :wave2:

Hey guys - just checking in, feel like total fraud though as have not run a step since Goofy and have no races planned yet for the whole year.

I am going to join a new running club tomorrow night though as I have finally found one near here that works with my scheduling, isn't too fast and has beer - I did try and join them before Xmas, turned up in the pub in my shorts (have I ever mentioned Sydney is a very formal city - flat shoes are dressed down here) and no-one else arrived! Seems like membership has picked up since then though - Tim is even thinking about coming as they have a 2k, 3k and 5k run so he can start with the little one.

I'm thinking maybe I should joint the miles challenge, but I've got to get off the weight I gained goofy training (why can't I be one of those people who loses weight doing distance!!!) so that means short fast runs and weights for the next six weeks so I'mnot sure how much I'll contribute... will go check things out now (tho I'm supposed to be working, it's a public holiday here and we have friends coming round this afternoon to play Rockband on PS2 - it's not out here until April so Tim is suddenly Lord Gamer of Sydney as he bought it in Florida). Hey kids- just another Goofy slacker reporting in!:rolleyes1

I managed 3 miles with Harry in the stroller today. It was really, really slow, but I think my IT band is better- it still hurts a bit, but nothing like it did. So, since Goofy, I've run I think 5 miles. Maybe 6.;)

Here's the best part of my day: DH and I volunteered to help for a fundraiser at church. Those of you up north, start laughing now. We're raising money to have these guys blow in snow out of this huge truck for a "snow party." They did it last year and all the kids loved it- they had no idea they were playing in a giant snow cone! Back to my point: one of the other women helping out started talking about a half she'd run, so of course, I had to meander over and talk about Disney. Then this woman who is totally intimidating (ran Boston!) but very nice started talking about how I'd run Goofy. They both wanted to know all about the races. My family stopped listening at least a week ago, so it was great!:cloud9:

Oh, and we made spaghetti plates with bread, salad, and cookies- did an assembly line thing. I put DH in charge of the noodles and sauce. I was in charge of cookie/brownie distribution. I ate the broken ones, because they wouldn't look good in the plates but people did donate them, and they shouldn't have gone to waste...:rolleyes1 So I was eating cookies and talking running and my kids were in children's church- could my morning have been any better?! ;) We sold the plates for $8 each and made over $850- the snow party is on!:thumbsup2

I tried to catch up with everyone, as I just know I can't do so as the thread progresses, though I will be reading and posting. It sounds like we're all making progress. Happy and healthy training this week, everyone.

Mel: Thanks for the update on the shirts, doing all the legwork and all. I know I'll be in for a least a couple, and am still trying to talk DH into joining our merry little group; I think he's intimidated by my descriptions of how social everyone is. Oh, I continue to be awed that you, or anyone, can run in humidity at all!

Chris: Congratulations on the 9-miler! And double congrats for enjoying it.

Terri: I'm doing the transition to running, too, for some of the reasons Mel mentioned in her post. I found it really hard to keep with the intervals the longer I was on the course. With my pace, it won't make a huge difference in my time, but I *think* my legs might feel less tired. I'd like to hear what others say about this.

Allyson: Congrats on your first day and the baby steps!!! It sounds like you have a real handle on things.

Maura: Great workout! Maybe you could write the Today show with some programming requests. ;)

Cruella de Mom: Thanks for the info. I too was wondering what kind of schedule might (eventually) be do-able for me. It sounds ambitious, but also like you use the 1/2s as part of your training? Or as a reward for it?? Also, thanks for the info on the Peachtree; it sounds perfect!

Sandy: A beautiful day, then? I hope you had fun on the trail.

MSDave: Here's another WISH for your hip injury to subside. It sounds awful. I'm impressed with your biking, too.

Martha: I do hope your dr. figures out what's wrong and it's not too serious. Oh, and Happy Birthday to your DD!

Julie: Welcome! This place IS the best, isn't it? :cool1: You sound like you're building a good base, and have the good attitude to go with it!

Jackie: Thanks for the KK update. I told my DH about it, and he's intrigued. I think he'd do a lot of strange things for doughnuts, but this? Doh!

Jen: Your XT plan sounds like fun and a great way to spend time with family. And I hope your DH finds a tri that's easy on the knees.

GinnyFavers: Oooh, shoulder pain. I hope you're feeling better. Windwalker Dave's probably the guy to ask about arm swing and stride, so I defer to him & others more experienced. They won't steer (swing?) you wrong. I'm interested in knowing, though, how you feel the walking/Pilates combo is working; I'm tempted by Pilates, but haven't really tried it.

Kira: Thanks for the info on the Philly run scene. DH & I are new to Pgh, and it sound likes Philly offers some tasty races.

Jeanne: I totally forgot you were doing KK! Thanks for the details. Aside from the gorging, was it fun to be part of as a non-eater? Would you do it again?

Susie: I was wondering the same thing about cheating/cheaters. Why bother?

Howard: 76 miles??!! Holy smokes!

Laurie: Great job on the 8 miles--glad to hear it went well.

Christa: I can't speak for the others, but I'm enjoying to get to know you through your posts & I'd like to see you on a team!

Erin: WTG with the 5K, even in less-than-ideal conditions.

Angie: Good luck, take it easy, and I know you can do it!

Christy: Nice workout, mixing up the cardio with the bike and the treadmill! I have to force myself on a bike at the gym; it doesn't seem to fit me right in some very important areas.

Vic: Congratulations on the 2 miles, especially with that foot. My blisters are taking a long time to heal, too, but they're not in as delicate a place. I can't imagine the pain.

Amy: Slacker, yeah right. :rotfl2: I always find the core workouts are the ones I put off, which is bad I know. I'd wish you good luck on getting back in the swing of things, but you're so motivated I don't think you need it.

Heather: Good luck on the Minnie training. Let us know how you like the log book.

Helen: Running clubs and beer? A perfect combo! Now if they would just add KK doughnuts.... Seriously, I hope this club is a good match for you. I do hope you join the Miles Challenge.

Steve: Sounds like you're off on a good start with recovery. All on the treadmill, too! :scared:

Jen in GA: I hope your IT Band is feeling better. I'm always impressed by runners with strollers, as I'm not nearly that coordinated or motivated (not to mention a lack of a stroller). The snow party sounds like truckloads of fun, too!

As for me: Another day of low-impact cardio, mostly elliptical. But I have discovered how much I love the rowing machine. No wait, in the least-claustrophobic part of the gym, makes my back feel good!

DH and I went to the bookstore today, looking for books on running & nutrition. Nothing. I found lots of other running books that I'd like to get into but don't know where to start. (I own, and love MfM, but am curious about others.) Does anyone have any book suggestions, running & nutrition, motivational, otherwise? Also, if you know of any good books for runners/ vegetarians I'd appreciate a title. Thanks!

Hello all! I'm trying to decide if I should train for what is said to be the last Minnie, or schedule knee surgery. It's a huge dilemma 'cause I'm not sure if I want to miss having all of the Minnie medals, not to mention that I have add points to my score after my mother beat me last year! So, at this point we're at me- 1 and Mom- 1. Anyway, I may or may not be at the Minnie this year. Oh! I've also got a busy schedule with my honors classes and working backstage for the upcoming musical, The Wizard of Oz. I think that play has been totally overdone, but it was either that, High School Musical, or the Music Man. I have to admit that HSM really is not my favorite(Translation: I hate it!) Working backstage is going to be tough anyway, because it's such a large production that it will need a lot of extra hands.
Well anyway, gotta fly,

Really Confused,

Kaley...I don't know what to tell you about running the race. Of course we'd all love to see you down there at the Minnie but maybe your knee surgery has to take precedence? Talk it over with your awesome Mom. I'm sure the right answer will come to you soon. BTW...I have to say. My daughter is a Kaley too....only we spell it Kayleigh. She's much younger than you but loves the theater and was recently in the musical The Music Man. She played Amaryllis. Anyway...best of luck with your decision. I just know you'll make the best decision for you. :goodvibes

Debra: Jodi from WiSH has highly recommded Chi Running. I'm going to order it on Amazon. She says it's an awesome book. It actually deals with running with your core...which is near and dear to my heart as a pilates instructor. So I'm going to check it out :).

Jen: I'll see your 6 slacker miles and raise ya. I've run...count 'em TWO WHOLE MILES since Goofy. :cheer2: Go me. Anyway...at least you have an excuse girl....you really DO have to rest that ITB. Awesome job getting out there for 3 today.

For anyone that's interested in a WISH tech shirt, we bought a lime green RaceReady singlet to check it out. Here's a thread with photos and comparison info:

Jen...are you thinking about dropping intervals altogether? I'm not sure...I had trained up to a R8/W2 awhile back, but dropped it in favor of the 4/1. There's a training schedule for the Gate River Run over in Dana's neighborhood that takes you from a R4/W2 to running the 15K.

http://www.gate-riverrun.com/15ktraining.pdf

I'm going to keep the MFM mileage and train up to 10 using the regular half program, but I kinda like how they did the intervals in the Gate program.

SWDave...thanks for the info. How did the mental thing work when you changed to running more?

Debra...you have to get DH involved too! He can be Mr. February ;)

Heather...I'm starting Minnie training tomorrow too!

Yes, Kaley has a big decision with the knees. There hasn't been a good time to do it so far, her schedule is always so busy (which also makes training difficult)

Slacker miles! :lmao:

Debra GREAT Recap :thumbsup2 I mostly read Running Magazine, and check out books from the library!

Mel awesome job on the shirts - I think you have something on the calendar idea!! :rolleyes1

My training? HAH - yes, it was laughable - and Jen you're more than welcome to our snow!! Just sayin... You see, the sun was shining, the weather report was above freezing.. but THERE IS SNOW OUTSIDE!! No one mentioned that fact!! (I've been fighting a cold, with vertigo, hadnt moved off the couch much!) so I get all decked out, go outside with fdil - SNOW... the sidewalks are covered in the stuff!! (mind you I ran Christmas eve, but the sidewalks were shoveled... not today!)

So does fdil let me go back to my couch? NO... she decides I will be her guest at her gym - :sad2: So she helped me do 2 miles on the treadmill, and I did the interval work.

It didnt kill me, but I sure dont know how I'm going to be ready for the 8K March 30 - but TEAMWORK will win out!!

When is Spring in Chicago???

Mel - No, I don't think I will give up intervals all together, except maybe for 5K's. I am going to go back to running longer tho. Last year I was up to run6/walk1, then dropped to 4/1 because it made counting easier, then dropped to 3/2 for the marathon. I found that even tho I dropped to 4/1, my pace was the same. I really think I am going to work on speed first and then concentrate on running longer. I have to be very careful because in March of last year I started working on speed, had gotten faster and by April my PF exploded. Now running too hard on pavement (like the marathon) apparently aggravates it.

When is Spring in Chicago???

Oh I hear ya! Went outside mid-day figuring might be do-able. Yeah, not so much. Definitely not when I realized that half the puddles on our street actually still had ice in them. I may not be the brightest crayon in the box but I know better than to try that and have my knee go out (torn ACL).

Should've gone to the gym but had Mom's b-day dinner at 2.30 and well you know, there's always laundry to be done and some cleaning and.....

Did get in 3 miles on the eliptical yesterday so didn't totally blow the weekend and bag is set for gym on way home from work tomorrow.

THANK YOU WISH TEAM. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

My run was great!!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: I only did 2.5 and I SWEAR on my life I tried to run slow, but since I don't a GARMIN :rolleyes1 and no watch I guess my perspective of slow is a little off..... It's been a little while :confused3 So I did a 10 min pace. I'm good with that considering what I have been through in the last 3 months, let a lone the last year.

As a little more motivation for anyone out there who needs it: DH I told you is not happy with his time at Disney .... WHATEVER!!! so he has been training hard. Tonight he did 10 miles at 8:20 pace WOOOOHOOOOO :cool1: :cool1: The reason I say this can be motivation is for those of you who dont know he had back surgery (yes we have to copy each other on EVERYTHING :) ) just this past July. And his pain before surgery was so bad that he had not run for at least 3 or 4 months prior.

So when he first started trying to get back, he litearally couldn't finish a mile. Now here he is 6 months later, Kicking but!!!! :dance3:

For all of you out there who feel like SLACKERS I have so much respect for what you guys worked for and accomplished this past year. From my personal experience if you are having a REALLY hard time finding the motivation then that's PROBABLY your body saying I'm tired, give me a break -- we deserve it. So just for now relish in your accomplishment. But then --GET YOUR BUT BACK OUT THERE!! Gotta go take a bath, relax and try to prepare myself for the battle that I call work tomorrow morning.

Another week with no training. I guess getting a PR in a 5k right after a marathon is not the best idea. :rolleyes1 My right leg rebelled in a big way. For the next couple of days, walking was not fun. It is getting better each day but I definately don't want to push it. Hopefully I will get a little in this week but since we are going on vacation this weekend, I am not sure what will get done.

Mel - Like the shirts and I am sure we would be interested in some but have no clue as to what or how many.

Now to catch up on everyone since I have been a computer slacker this weekend.

Amy, thanks for your QUICK and helpful response. It's good to have a pilates expert weigh in. I checked out the Amazon reviews, the book (and DVD) is available through Interlibrary Loan, and if it deals with both my core (my soft spot, hah!) and running, so we may have a winner! Ding, ding, ding! I'm definitely going to check it out.

Debra...you have to get DH involved too! He can be Mr. February ;)

:lmao: I'd love to, because he's really cute. At least I think so ! But I'm thinking baby steps. First I get his permission to use his real name, then I coax him into a WISH shirt (with lots of praises about how it complements his coloring). He was very impressed by all the friendly folk--spectators and runners--Marathon weekend, so I think he'll come around.

Sandy: I love the library too, and know it will be a good resource once I have some titles. (Like above.) We currently get Runner's World, and I turn to the Penguin first thing. I'm looking for more, I guess, to stave off the post-marathon depression. I haven't decided on any races yet, as our schedules are really up in the air for the next few months. :sad2:

Liz: WTG on the workout. And thanks for reminding me I should get in the habit of packing my bag the night before.

Angie: A big whoo-hoo to you AND your DH. That's great news!

Bill: Ouch. I hope your leg is feeling better soon and you can, at least, enjoy your vacation.

Count me as another one of the running slackers. Totally blew off any sort of LR this weekend. Maybe it was the overindulgence at dinner Friday night, DD's barfs Saturday night, or the 17 hours of actual work I did.....How did I ever manage to train for a marathon.

I did manage, though, to register as a volunteer for the Little Rock Marathon (both at the expo and the finish line). By doing that, I know that I can't register for the 1/2. I was really wanting to register, but my mind keeps telling me that I need a long distance break

Angie--WTG on your run! Can't wait to hear how awesome you do in May!

Hey guys! Just wanted to check in real quick before the end of the weekend. Wow, it looks like everyone is doing great getting the steps in, especially so shortly after marathon weekend. Good job!

Angie--GREAT JOB on the run! It had to feel so good to get out there again! Here's hoping you'll be ok to run and can get back on track!

Helen--too funny about showing up to the pub in shorts. :lmao: Hope the running club works out well for you.

Steve--good job getting the miles in. Especially on the treadmill. You have more patience than I.

Jen--that's cool that even the "Bostonian" was asking about your Goofy experience! Isn't it great to start telling strangers the war stories after the family quits listening? :thumbsup2

Kaley--god luck with your decision about whether to train or not. I know that's got to be a tough call. I'm sure your mom can also help out with that decision (although do parents REALLY know best?? :) ). I know it may be hard to think past the Minnie right now, but in 5 years, do you think you'd be better off if you had the knee surgery now or later? I don't know the answer, but hopefully it will come to you. Good luck again with your decision.

Mel--thanks for all the work on the tech shirts! If we end up getting enough interest for an order, I know Krista and I would be in for a few of them. By the way, tell Jeff he makes a great Mr. January.

Bill--take it easy on that leg. Hoping you can get back to training soon. By the way, how much would you give to be back at WDW right now chatting at Ohana again? Of course, I could always go for Ohana! :)

Laurie--great job on the 8 miler!

Dave--ok, I'm going to confess. I'm an idiot. I went to your page to vote for your photos, and I couldn't figure out how to vote. Am I missing something really easy? Don't answer that. :sad2: But seriously, how do I vote??

Training's going ok, I guess. I feel like a big slug, like I should be getting in more miles than I really am. I did a nice, comfortable 7 miles this afternoon. That gave me 14 for the week. I managed to get in some biking and lifting, too, but it still didn't seem like enough. I guess it's better to get back to training slowly and avoid injury. I always turn into an ignorant, ill-informed runner immediately after a marathon and I forget everything I've learned about starting back slowly and re-building mileage and I usually start with too much too soon and end up injured. So maybe I'll try to break the trend this time.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Is anyone else NOT looking forward to another Monday? :sad2: Is there any way we can just bump up the 2009 marathon weekend by about 45 weeks?

Talk to you all later!

Steve

Hi DianeL- I haven't seen you over here for a while. So were your Pal Mickeys along for the ride with you during marathon weekend this year?

Hi M.S. Dave!!! Yup the Pals were along for the trip, someone around here has a photo of mine at the Monday breakfast meet wearing his own Marathon Weekend shirt and his very own Mickey Medal :) Might be Kathy (Valentine). Since Susan couldn’t make it down this year due to a new job I had her mouse waiting in Epcot with Mom (barb) just before the Choir. So if you see my photos he’s in there, at least in spirit I dragged Susan across the finish line ;) The ASI photos look more like I’m whispering in his ear most likely saying remind me never to do this again but I am crazy and am planning on the Full again in 2010.

My bib # is 12189 if you look at the finishline photos you will also notice a washcloth that turned into my security blanket and if I ever get to post the link I had that cloth with me even at the WISH tent after the race.

They weren’t out and about as much on this trip because after a while they can drag on you. Thanks for thinking of me :) I’m usually so horrible about keeping up with the main list so was happy that I caught your post :)

Jen117 with the race behind me I want to build my running. Before the race I was just running 1 solid mile and then working on mile 2. I hope I can hang with you and Mel again in May ;) I had so much fun seeing you guys. And I loved meeting Deekaypee-Debra too.

M.S. Dave - I voted and wasn’t sure can we vote on more than 1? I see you had a family of 4 cheering for you in 2007, I spotted the little guy being carried ;) Nice to see they were/are still enjoying their own Pal :)

Chris I emailed them this past week to see if they would send me a confirmation. Susan signed the 3 of us for the Half on Jan 14th, we were signed up while Cathy, Barb and I waited to see Crush LOL Susan was a busy busy girl maybe just not so much work LOL But Susan doesn’t recall seeing any emails showing the confirmation which drives me nuts. I’m the type who prints the screen shot, prints the emails and then brings them with the waiver LOL I’m a wee bit paranoid. I think they don’t load the verification page until later in the year which again is driving me nuts since I don’t have anything in hand.

Debra I’d be interested in a running/nutritionbook too :)

Angie Woohoo to you and your DH! Were you the one with the new shoes in green? If so did you use them for your 2.5? Glad you were able to get out there!

I’ve been with the slackers! I survived the Marathon well and bounded back better than I thought. Jan 14th I had the usual stiffness I get after doing a race. But last Sunday I did something to my knee and stayed on the sidelines for the week. Well after much whining and post-race moodiness DH (Ray) dragged my tush out to the park and into the snow where I managed to do 4 miles. My 1st mile was horrible! Just under a 19 minute pace as i adjusted to the snow and trying out my knee but ended with an overall pace of 15:25. Each mile got easier. And my knee doesn’t hurt now.

So today kicked off my return to the training field. :) Ok this might be long but I'm sure I'll be bad again until thurs/fri. So stay healthy, PD to those recovering and dealing with injuries and happy training!!!

Like Steve I would recommend you to think long term about your situation, especially given your youth. You have so many years when you can do stuff that interests you.

It would be great to do that last Minnie, but if getting your knee fixed would make future efforts and activities easier and more fun, then that may be the way to go.

If you want to talk knees, then I'm the guy. I'm always ready to talk about 1999, in our house known as "the year of the 2 knee surgeries." And yes, I was the lucky person who had them both.

Now that I know you are a fellow soccer guy, when I see you next we can talk shop (Calcio = the beautiful game in Italian). The soccer community in the USA is small and tight, and it's always great to see a member of the group. By the way, those 2 knee surgeries were due to soccer injuries, but the game has given me so much in my life, I could never repay it. And the funny thing is even though I play from age 8 to over 40, I got more from the game off the field than on it.

Angie

I typed up a long reply to you last Thursday, but the system dropped it out and I couldn't re-create it. I know you are fighting injuries and all the other stresses of a young family, but you need to hear that you and Bobby have done so well in the past few months. You've both overcome trials and tribulations and turned in great results 2 weeks ago. I must admit I'm pretty shocked to hear you talk about not being active in your early years, especially with your 9 mpm half marathon pace. Even if you didn't express it earlier, you have a good deal of natural ability, which is likely to produce better and better results in the future. In my earlier life I was juggling hard training with just 1 child, and work, and it is a huge challenge, but you and Bobby have done great, and have better results hanging out there in the future.

Steve

Are you out there? I need you to join team 8 in WWDave's little competition. No pressure, no siree.

Yes I did have the new shoes, thanks for asking I meant to tell everyone they actually worked out great and it made me realize how BAD my other shoes were. :scared1: I felt like I was running on air. Maybe that explains my time. I was running on the clouds :lovestruc Also -- HOW THE HECK do you sun in snow!!! Seriously you guys have my utmost respect :worship: Seriously, when I went out for my run it was upper 60's and beautiful.

To anyone out there venturing out in that kind of weather it really takes determination and motivation. I mean it :lovestruc

That's really cool about the volunteering. I found out how much I really liked it at Disney. I was going to register for expo for Sarasota but I'm glad I didn't cause Mark Gunger -- Laugh you Way to a Better Marriage is coming to a church right here in our town. I ALMOST signed up for the expo that morning too!!! He is really funny you should check him out... www.laughyourway.com

And as for May. DH is running so fast right now I don't know if I could catch up with him, plus I am in a dilemma and maybe you could help me. I have a friend who did the 1/2 this year, her first time ever doing ANYTHING like that. I am very proud of her and everything that she accomplished  but I mentioned we were doing MINNIE 15k and and she is doing it too and I don't know if she wants us to run it together, kind of seems that way. But we are on TOTALLY different levels when it comes to pace. So do I kindly explain to here that I want to run faster with DH :confused3 , or do I just run with her. I don't know what to do. n He could care less either way, so I can't really use him as an excuse.

I truly from the bottom of my heart have so much respect for anyone who takes on this challenge and journey that we have all chosen to take. And I REALLY love that everyone is at such different levels and we can help and inspire and motivate each other. But then there comes the time when you have "trained so hard" and want to do your best and see what you as an individual are capable of.

OK SERIOUSLY SORRY for the long post, but this is something that has bothered me for a while. So once again, WISH team, tell me what you think.:confused3

Angie--I completely understand your dilemna. I have had the same thing happen with friends at work, etc. What's great about everyone on our WISH team is that:

1.) There are so many of us that there is bound to be someone with the same pace that we can hook up with.

2.) If we want to run our own races, we all understand that and it is never an issue to break off from a group to run alone.

However, as we all realize, it's not the same outside this team. Especially with friends. I don't know if I have a good answer for you or not. I'm not usually one to want to hurt feelings and come right out to say that I want to run a little faster/slower, but I actually have done this with friends (usually, I wait till race morning to say something, which causes me weeks of undue stress worrying about it) and it's worked out just fine. In fact, I've never had a friend feel bad or even act as if they were disappointed after I've told them.

I guess it also depends if you want to run the race for a PR or just to have fun. If you really want to run faster and your friend is truly a good friend, she'll understand. She probalby already realizes you are on different levels and may not even plan to stick with you.

Ok, I'm just rambling now. Just try not to lose sleep over it. I really feel for you, because I know exactly what you're going through. Hope everything works out!

Oh! I've also got a busy schedule with my honors classes and working =Really Confused,
Kaley

I was just reading Stephen's post to you and it made me think of the situation I have been in lately. In just a few weeks I will be 34 and I still have a hard time thinking long term and for the future, seriously :confused3 but my back injury and marathon training has changed that.

I have been DYING to get back out there running but I initially started back too quick and my back was killing me and I was NOT happy at the thought of never being able to do it again.

For the past couple of weeks and even months really, every time I really wanted to get out there I would just think of not being able to do it at all anymore and I would do light weights and core and not push it. I know it sounds so cliche and it is easier said than done - BELIEVE ME I KNOW but there WILL be so many more races.

If you think that the surgery will help you in the long term (like the rest of her life) then do it!!! It's a tough decision but we are here for you.

Steve Thanks for the advice, sounds like we are a lot alike because normally I am like you. (maybe it's the engineering thing :confused3 ) I would not want to hurt anyone's feelings so I would probably wait till that morning too. But we need to decide if DH is even signing up. So I guess, as much as I want to blame her right now, the decision is on me. Do I want to do this race just for fun, which I have never done,or do I want to try to PR with him?

One of those things, ya know??

Thanks for helping me think through this thing out loud. And especially for all the new people reading this I want to re-itterate what Steve said. That is one of the things that is SOOOOO cool about this team. Everyone is on different levels, and everyone RESPECTS that so that everyone can reach that full potential.

Hi y'all! I'm just going to say a quick "hello" tonight and try to catch up on the thread later in the week. I started my first grad school online class last week and we're heading for Florida (Keys, not WDW) next week and I'm trying to get a lot done.

I only ran Monday and Saturday, so I hope to run more this week. And, I'm taking my gear with me on vacation and planning to get some running done down in the heat as well. I figure it will be good practice for next January when I'll have to go from middle-of-winter to heaven-knows-how-hot.

Have a good week everyone!

My training group got together Friday night at Senor Frog's to celebrate this month's birthday babies. We get together the third Friday of each month as an excuse to go have dinner and cocktails. Our motto is "Live to Run, Run to Eat." 22 people in all were able to make the party.

I got in a 8 mile run today (Sunday), from Kapiolani Park, up over Diamond Head, out to Kahala Mall, and then back. The route covers part of the actual Honolulu Marathon.

Trying to figure out my race schedule this year. Possibly the Hilo marathon in March, but I haven't committed myself yet. Another choice could be the Maui Marathon. We'll see.

Have a great week everyone.

Kaley - Good luck with the Minnie decision. Ultimately, it's the long-term that matters! I wish you and my DD could meet - she's 17, plays soccer and lives for marching band. She thinks she wants to do the half next year, but I don't think she'll be able to find time to train. Something to do with band taking a lot of time... :confused3

Angie - I understand the dilemma about running with your friend. I'd run two races with people from my Galloway group and not done my best time because I'd slowed down to stay at their pace, figuring the companionship was worth it. At the half I made a tough decision to leave a fellow WISHer at mile 8 and go on alone, knowing that I'd trained all year for this and wanted to do the best I could. That being said, are you sure you're ready to be shooting for a PR? I'm glad you're able to get out and run again, but I'd hate for you to overdo it and end up hurt and not able to run!

Angie - I would encourage you to run your own race. I know how important the Minnie is to you after everything you've been through in the last few months. Run for yourself and have fun!

I've had really rewarding races where I've run with friends and either they slowed down or I did. At the same time, I PR'd a 10K in a big way because I knew my friend was up ahead of me and I wanted to keep up.

I know you've been feeling really down lately. I have to say you have impressed me so much with your strength - from discovering your love of running with your DH, to finishing school, setting a great example for your kids. You are getting back out there again. If it doesn't all come so easily to begin with...you'll get there.

Good Morning Steve- Here's how I think the voting works. You click on the link below. Login in the upper right hand corner of the site with your Disboards name and password. Click on a photo, and you should see a ranking from 1-10. You're really rating the photo on a scale of 1-10, and that's your vote. Hope that helps...

M.S. Dave - I voted and wasn’t sure can we vote on more than 1? I see you had a family of 4 cheering for you in 2007, I spotted the little guy being carried ;) Nice to see they were/are still enjoying their own Pal :)Thanks for voting Diane. You can definitely vote for more than 1 photo if you want. Yup, each princess has their own Pal Mickey. We never ended up getting version 2, but they seem to be happy with their version 1s.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I just have to comment on how much I've heard the word slackers mentioned on the thread yesterday. Uuummmm, didn't a lot of you run a long race just a weekend ago? I don't think anyone on this team is a slacker at all.

Kaley- It's a tough decision about whether to run the Minnie or not. However, your health definitely should take precidence over a race. There will always be another race, and there's been rumors that Minnie was going to be replaced with a 1/2M. Save yourself for other races you can do with your great Mom. :thumbsup2

Debra- I've had ChiRunning for a while, and I'm just now getting around to reading it. I like reading other running books too. I've read "Duel in the Sun" and "Ultramarathon Man", and both were really motivational reads.

Mel- Mentally I was fine when I switched to running instead of r/w. It was helping that I was running with a group, but I have to say for the most part I didn't even miss the walk breaks. I kind of forgot all about them. However, my hip pain is now reminding me about the walk breaks. Good luck and take it slow and easy.

Keep posting disneyrun/katie- We'd all like to know how your training's going.

Angie- I just wanted to say hello, and we're always here for you. You've ebeen through so much the past year. I'm glad you had a good run in your new shoes.

Hello Cari

Hello Jeff- Your 8 miler sounds great. Picturing you running in Hawaii helps me get through the cold, snowy Rochester winter.

OK, HI to all those I missed out there. Hope you all are doing well.

but for those of you doing the Philly Distance Run - where are you staying?

We really want to do this race. And I'd like to book a room before they are sold out.
I guess I am just scared away by the hotels I've found charging $30-40+ per day to park!
That's in addition to $200 per night for a room.

Morning folks. I forgot to post that I got my first post-Goofy run in on Saturday. It was a slow 4.19 miles. The temperature wasn't supposed to be too bad, but the wind was wicked! So cold and blowing really hard. I ran with a group and it was great to have the ladies out there for motivation!

Now it really is cold here: -22F. It is supposed to be like this most of the week so needless to say I probably won't be getting much running in.

Hey Sandy! DH and I are doing the CDC in Aug and Wendy is coming to town for it too. We just need to recruit a few more WISHers! Anybody? The course is flat and scenic, with the last portion right along the lakeshore. It is a John Bingham event with a generous 4hr time limit.

Nice long workout weekend for me... Finished watching the remaining Amazing Race episodes (love that show!) with DW while on the bike trainer for an hour, estimate 18 miles over 60 min. Then on Sunday went out for a couple hour long run of 12 miles that ended up a little over, avg'd 10:54 and wasn't winded but was quite creaky at the end, I could tell my long run last week was only 7 and so this was quite a jump.

I continue to eyeball all the races I have planned and am trying to prioritize as we figure out what other "real life" priorities are going to be taking up time on some of those weekends, will update soon! I'll also admit that the LA Marathon (where I grew up and the one I always wanted to run) is the same weekend I was going to do back to back halves... And although plane tix are expensive I was going to be running 26 miles anyway so... HMMMM :rolleyes1

Angie--that's a tough question to answer. DH and I have the same issues running together, but thankfully we always do b/c we pull each other through the tough parts. I would talk with your friend and see what her expectations are, and also let her know how you're feeling. And, girly, if you can set a new PR at Minnie this year, after being so super speedy last year, the competitive side in me says "GO FOR IT!!!"

Mel--never mentioned it before, but I'd be interested in a shirt as well

To all our new members--Forgive me for not welcoming you sooner! Can't wait to get to know all of you

Hi Kristi,

I am not officially registered for this race yet (got to let my credit card rest for a few days), but definitely plan on being there. Terri (TEK224) suggested: Embassy Suites at 18th & Ben Franklin or Sheraton (formerly Wyndham) at 17th & Race. Maybe I'd better just bite the bullet and make my reservations and registration tonight! Hope to see you and Chad there!

You guys think you are slackers--I haven't run since before Christmas!!! Oh well, I plan on starting again soon, hopefully tonight, I'm just not sure how much I can still run!

Kaley--Good luck in your decision!! I kind know how you feel, I wanted to run Disney this past year, but I followed my doctor's advice and sat that one out. Yes, it was hard being at the Expo and seeing everyone so excited, buying all the marathon merchandise and carrying around their packets, and it was really hard watching the half from the sidelines and seeing everyone with their medals. But ultimately I knew I made the right decision, there will always be other races to run, but in my case, only 1 baby and in your case, only 2 knees. Good luck!!!

Angie--I am so proud of you, girl!!! I bet you were flying on air! How do you feel today? Is your back okay? Good luck in the decision with your friend. I'm like you, a people pleaser who will make myself miserable just to make the other person not feel bad. But I have to agree with Leana, after all you have been through, Minnie is your victory party, I'm afraid if you decide to run with your friend, you may regret it later and make yourself miserable with what if's. This is a tough one! See, if you were slow like me, it would be a moot point! :)

Pat--I'd love to run CDC this year, but I think I'm going to be a little busy that weekend!

Debra--I really like the book "First Marathons" by Gail Waesche Kislevitz, "Run Fast" by Hal Higdon (it has practical ways we can all increase our speed, so not just for sub 7:00 milers), and "I Run, Therefore I Am Nuts" by Bob Schwartz--that's a really funny book!!! I am a reader too and will read anything I can get my hands on!

Lily--I just got your PM, I will e-mail you the pictures tonight when I get home, they are on our laptop at home.

I know I missed people, but I have work piling up that I have been ignoring. I'll be back later!

Hey Sandy! DH and I are doing the CDC in Aug and Wendy is coming to town for it too. We just need to recruit a few more WISHers! Anybody? The course is flat and scenic, with the last portion right along the lakeshore. It is a John Bingham event with a generous 4hr time limit.

:yay: I just saw all the activity in the PA Marathon thread - and figured the WISHers were heading somewhere new - Glad there'll be some WISHers around - I've talked so often, and so highly of the Team that Fdil talked me into running this Half -

MORE :welcome: to the Newbies -

Im sure there are a lot lurking, and I wanted to WISH them :wizard: and just jump right in!!

I got the 2 miles in yesterday and can I just say :EEEK to Canadian Gal at - 22 F!!! :scared1: We started out outside, but the breeze and snow turned me in to a treadmill - even if it meant listening to a spiel!! (guest of fdil) Apparently she has recruited her Aunts, either that or they want to come watch me make a fool out of myself for the Shamrock Shuffle!! MORE incentive to keep training!

Thanks everyone for all your advice on the race. I am actually torn between the advice everyone gave. Due to my deeply competitive nature :rolleyes1 I am actually a little paranoid of doing exactly what Jackie said and discussed this issue with DH. I don't want to push myself too much too soon and re-injure. However her pace is a lot slower than my slow pace so I was thinking of trying to train for the best I can do without reinjure. Thanks for the encouragement Leana things are looking better now. I know that when DH did RFTT with our friend who ran a lot slower pace than DH runs, she told me over and over that she only finished, and finished as well as she did because he was pushing her to it. Not purposely -- you know what I mean. Well I will think about a little more and see how I feel easing back into training the next couple of weeks.

I am happy to report absolutely no pain today even after running last night.:woohoo:

Also on the subject of the CDC, it just so happens that we were discussing visiting my cousin in Missouri then popping up to Chicago at the end of the summer. :rolleyes1 I just have a question, is it not HOT in August to be running a 1/2 Marathon. You have to remember I am from FL if you run outside in August you die :scared1: Those that did it last year please tell me what it was like.

Gotta go back to work

Angie, the CDC weather was hot, but not as hot as the Chicago Marathon, and not as hot as the 2007 WDW.

Stacie, I'm sorry to read about your pain. Maybe take it a bit slower until you can build up more strength.

How can one join your WISH team. This is the year I am stepping out of my comfort zone and I am just going to go ahead and ask if I can be a part of your group. I ran the Disney Half this year(first half for me - yeah me!) and you were such a supportive group. I am Goofy 2009 and I am going to need all the help I can get!
Thanks in advance!

Wow, you all are amazing!

Read the thread and it looks like this is for 1/2 and full marathoners - could someone point me in the right direction for the 2009 WDW 5K thread? Have not been able to find one yet. :)

Would love to try the 1/2 next year, but due to my MS, cannot commit to more than the 5K - still, am very excited!!

Thanks for the inspiration!!

Christine: Some of us just finished the 1/2 and/or marathon so we are probably coming across as being all about that. But really we are all about helping each other through any race or just through exercise and healthy lifestyles in general. Hop on the train, you'll feel the love in no time!!!!

Julie - Welcome!!!! I'll repeat what was already said. be very careful not to do to omuch too soon. You have a year. Let your body adjust slowly or it weill rebel. BTW, I think you'll find a few otehr crazy peoplehere. ;) We were all in similar boats at one point in time, though, so use us if you need anyhting!

Going from r/w to all run: My best advice? DOn't. My ego forces em to, not that I think less of anyone else for doing it. Really, cause teh r/w'ers tend to kick our behinds. ;) Our pace went down. Plus, it;s liekly harder on teh joints. IMO, it's not worth it, unless you have it in your brain from way back that walking is cheating and your ego demans you run. JMO, of course. ALso, if I want to do a r/w when conditions are bad, my muscles are not used to it and ithey cramp up. If you're already doing it, you have the opption of changing the intervals to fit the situation.

Hi Everyone-

Well, it's official. I have signed up for Goofy in 2009. :goodvibes

Angie - I admire your loyalty to your friend that you are having such a tough time deciding how to run your race. I am torn with what to tell you because I think there are good arguments for both sides. I ran the full marathon as a mentor for TNT and therefore did not run my own race. I know I could have had a better finishing time if I had run on my own, but I would not have had as good a time on the course. I laughed and danced and met lots of WISHers along the way. If I had been focused on a finishing time, I would have missed so much. However, I have not been injured. I have not had to claw my way back to the starting line like you have. Your friend should know that it is important for you to run this race for yourself. You can celebrate together when its over. What I do not think is a good idea is going out there with the idea of getting a PR. Make this race a celebration of recovery and save the PR for another day when just being able to run the race is no longer as exciting. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Quick question - do we know when they're going to officially announce what's up with the Minnie/Princess/Whatever it's going to be weekend for 2009?

DH and I are trying to decide what to do. Since DS's first birthday will fall across marathon weekend in January, it's unlikely that we'll be able to make it for that next year (I can already hear the grandparents complaining about us stealing the baby away to Florida on his first birthday!). But, I don't know, maybe we could celebrate his birthday a week early or a week late, and that could appease everyone.

SO, if we don't do the Donald in '09, our plan would be to come out for the May event. But I'm an obsessive planner, so this not knowing is driving me crazy!

I just saw that the half is already 55% full! :scared1: I thought I'd have more time to decide what to do.

Hi team!

I have been totally MIA since marathon weekend because I got home and lto/wto. It has been nuts! Today is the first day that I've actually had a chance to run and that was with a friend I'm getting started, so my first "real" run will be tomorrow.

Since it's so far past I won't do a real race report/recap except to say I finished the marathon only by the grace of God and the help and encouragement of the whole WISH team - fellow runners and screamers alike. My time was way off my goal, but that's okay, I still finished with a smile on my face. I was moved to tears recounting the support you all showered me with all along the course and don't know what else to say but thank you. Also, I enjoyed sitting in the corral with Dana, Scott and Paul. It was great to get a chance to talk to you all!

Now that DH realized how great this group is, I'm thinking he may be more willing to do a WISH meet next year. (Yes, I said next year. The only question is: which of us is doing the half and which is doing the full?!?)

I am planning on doing another marathon sometime. I'd love for it to be Disney, but we'll have to see how that works out. I'll do a couple of halfs this spring and try to keep the miles up.

Time to get back in the groove and back on "board" here. I'm going to go back and catch up with this week's thread -- looks like you all have been busy around here!

Happy training!

Hi Renee...So nice to see you. I've been wondering how you were doing since the marathon. I know I came upon you right there in the AK parking lot...and neither of us was feeling very good. We traded spots for a while and I was hoping to see you at the finish. You were hanging tough despite the back pain! Great job on a strong finish!

Hi guys...wow this thread moves FAST!

Taught two out of three classes so far today. Phew! And it's supposed to be a rest day. ALthough resting from WHAT I ask? As a mileage slacker this past week I really shouldn't call it a rest day...just another training day ;). I'll hit the pavement tomorrow if it kills me!!!

That's because you have been posting elsewhere the past two weeks and therefore not missing. What's up with not joining the mileage competition. I know you would beat us into oblivion but we would still have fun trying to keep up with you. Just so you know, riding on a horse doesn't count. ;)

However if you are totally gone for a while, we will have to send out Panda in the hill country looking for you.

Kaley - GOod thing you have us to rely on. I'm sure your familiy's no help! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: As fro teh knee, it seems like whenever you really try to train, your knee gets in the way. If you have any openings where you could do surgery, I'd really try for that first. HAte to say it, but is spring break an option. If you can't get in and have to wait until summer, then you might as well train. Take it easy, though. As much as beating your mom means, it's not worth it. (Easy for me to say, I will never beat my racing partner, dh). SO nice to see you posting!

Amanda - FYI - You should never increase speed or distance more than 10% per week. MfM or Running fo Mortals are good places to start. RfM has a 5K plan. Where are you (time/distance wise) adn what's your first goal?

OK, sort of caught up through page 3. :headache:

OK, well I wasn't planning on running too much this week given how cold it is going to be here, and a planned wisdom tooth extraction for Thursday...

...but I have bronchitis! My run coach advised me to get to a doctor after she heard me losing my voice on Saturday. A bunch of ladies in the run group came down with it after the Nike race and most took a good month to kick it. So apparently marathons + living in Calgary = increase likelihood of developing bronchitis. :sad1:

The good news is my wisdom teeth have been pushed back to the end of March.

Don't want to sound too much like a Galloway fanatic, but if you get a chance to hear him in person, do it. (Here's a list of the program kickoffs for the spring - I think he usually does his spiel at the kickoff, and it's free!) http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training_groups/list_cities.html

He makes a really good case for why the R/W is better, at least for those of us non-elite runners! I know I was truly impressed last year when I went to hear him, and I did NOT expect to be wowed into joining the program. Just something to consider. And changing the intervals really doesn't change your time all that much.

Diane: Good job on the 4 miles, in SNOW, & on building your running base. That's where I am, too. It feels kind of strange to move from the marathon to concentrate on more minutes/miles of running. I'm glad your knee is doing well, too!

Angie: You are so thoughtful, re: your friend and the Minnie. I don't know you or your physical-health situation very well, but it sounds like you'd really like to test yourself at the Minnie. I can't think of a better way to express this sentiment than what Cruella de Mom has already said! But my .02 cents is that I'm sure your friend would understand if you expressed it just like you told us. You could also adopt the phrase I've been using recently: "It's not about you, it's about me." (As in, I need to do this to really seen what I'm capable of and not because I don't enjoy your company.)

Katie: Hi to a fellow reader. The WISH team has been great with their suggestions. I'll never need to actually run, as I'll be so busy reading! :rotfl2: MSDave: Thanks for the additional titles. I was tempted by Ultramarathon Man at the bookstore and will probably get it, but haven't heard of Duel in the Sun. Oooh, I love making book lists. Krista: Thanks for the suggestions and information. I hadn't even picked up Higdon's Run Fast book, thinking it might be too advanced for me. Now I know to give it a closer look. And funny books are always good!

Jeff: Congrats on the 8-miler. I just love the motto of your training group; it sounds like a solid core of people who really enjoy each other's company.

Matt: Great workout weekend! I say go for the LA Marathon; after all, you want to get your money's worth for the trip, right? Might as well make another marathon memory. (Of course, I don't have to run your races...:rotfl: )

Welcome GroovyGirls & Christine! :cheer2: The more, the merrier! Don't let the post-marathon weekend euphoria scare you away. Lots of us are still beginners to this running thing, myself included!

Carrie: I'll keep my fingers crossed on the weather--hopefully no ice for your runs! And thanks for the input on the r/w. And thanks, Susie, for your experience with w/r intervals, too. Jackie, I am familiar with the broad outlines of Galloway's ideas, but now it looks like I should read his book. (Wait, does this mean I'm NOT an elite runner? :rotfl2:) Thanks to all for the responses; this information is quite useful to me.

TXang: I thought I'd have more time for these decisions, too. Our household's plans/priorities are still up in the air, and it wouldn't be mature of us to let Disney races make financial and other types of planning for us, would it? (No, seriously, would it?)

Maria: Then tell your DH that he should get together with my DH! Oh, and tell your DH I look forward to hearing about his successes on the Miles/Minutes Challenge!

As for me: An easy three miles r/w today, using C25K to transition to full running short distances. It feels sort of odd to be shifting "back" to C25K after MfM, but good. I found I do much better with the structure of a training program; who woulda thunk it?

And to everyone I didn't get a chance to respond to, happy training! :yay:

Oh no Martha, I hope you feel better soon!

I can't remember who was asking about transitioning from r/w to just run but here are my thoughts. Not sure what kind of interval you are doing right now, but I moved from a 4:1 interval to 9:1 and sometimes even 19:1. Training with a longer interval you essentially train to walk each water stop only. I found that pretty successful when I ran the Nike half in October. Good luck!

Ugh, with the Goofy and Half filling so quickly, I really need to make up my mind what I want to do. I really want to do Goofy--but if I do, so will Scott; and my dad is planning on having knee surgery in December (which matters b/c I was counting on them coming with us to babysit) But maybe I'll register for the half and try to train hard to smoke out a great time. Then Goofy in 2010 or 2011?:confused3

I'm also thinking of signing up for the Arkansas Grand Prix racing series. You enter the Grand Prix and then get points for various races throughout the year--those with the top 3 point totals in all age divisions win a prize. Also, one of the requirements for the series is that you belong to a local running group, which I have been meaning to do. Gonna go check that out.

Training wise, got a solid 4 miles in today. Felt like I could keep going, which is a nice change.

Hey all....Still really training but LTO does not even begin to describe where I am right now.
Please keep my family in prayer....my mom had cancer 4.5 years ago. She went for her last CT scan and it has returned. She started her 1st of 6 rounds of chemo today. The doctors are very positive and she is too. I just hate she has to go through the chemo again.

Sorry such a downer post.Christa- I'm so, so very sorry about your Mother's news. I'm definitely thinking of you and your family. Your mother pulled through this once before. I'm sending out all my positive energy that she can again. We're here for you.

Did my first official Minnie training tonight, 2.52 miles in 30 min for an 11:55 pace.

Debra...I just got Higdon's Run Fast and Marathoning books. I also have Galloway's Marathoning book. I'm not sure I got anything more out of Galloway's book than I did MFM, though his chapter on mental tricks is very interesting. I also just read Stephen King's new book Duma Key (set in Sarasota :) ) but that may not have anything to do with what you're asking ;)

Martha...:wizard: for feeling better.

Christa...wow...sorry to hear of your mom's news. Hope you, she and the family are doing okay. If you need anything, holler!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions on whether or not to transition to full run. I also got another opinion on my ankle from a PA that works in ortho. She reminded me that continuing to stress the ankle could lead to arthritis and then I may really have problems. I think keeping some intervals will help reduce the stress. Just need to figure out what interval works best!

I can't believe the half is filling up so quickly! I haven't gotten my postcard that says they got my registration yet. Hope to see it soon!

So tonight we went to the gym again and I ran 3.91miles. It took me right about 38 minutes. It was better than yesterdays heat issues, I wore my short orange shorts and a drifit t shirt. I also took straight water rather than G2. I have also seem to have hit my stride as far as balancing work and school. It means that I have put things into order of importance.
1. Work
2. School Work
3. Training
4. Sleep
5. Disboards
6. BT
So I am going to really be budgeting my time. But I have also figured out that if I watch CNN while on the TM I could combine school and Training. One of my classes requires me to keep up to date with the 2008 Presidential Race, so I have also mastered the art of multitasking. Plus I take my books to work and read on my breaks so I really have made to most of al the tie that I have per day. Well I should get back to my school work.

Hi! I recently decided to get back in shape but need to set long term goals for myself to achieve anything... So what better than what everyone tells me I can't do-the 2009 WDW 1/2 marathon... I plan on doing the minnie 5k to get started. I'm not really a runner, I never have been but I went out and bought my marathons for mortals book earlier. I'm super excited but wondering what i'm getting myself into. Any tips or advice? I'm not even sure where to start...

Erin, what's 'BT'? My guesses:
Beer Time
Boyfriend Torture
Bonsai Tweaking
Bovine Tipping
Bacon Tomato
Baklava Tasting
Bomb Threat

I'm glad that you're finding that balance. I know that's tough, when you have so much going on. I guess the online classes make it a bit easier, since you can have a little more flexibility with your time.

I am STILL HUNGRY. ALWAYS HUNGRY after the WDW half! Anybody got a peanut?

My two cents - Follow that book. It helped me tremendously. You can do this! I just ran my first WDW half a few weeks ago, and I tell ya (waxing poetic here), it can change your life :woohoo:

No training here today...rest day for me!

Christa--my thoughts and prayers are with your mom and your family. Hang in there!

Renee--like Amy, I was wondering how you made out at the marathon...we met up just before MGM and played leapfrog for awhile as well, but then I lost you around the YC/BC. Glad to hear you made it through despite the back pain! Good to see you around here again!

Leana--Hope you are feeling better soon! There is so much stuff going around here, I haven't felt good the past few days, so I am hoping I am not getting sick myself. Take care of yourself!

Welcome to all the new folks! It is getting mightly hard keeping up these days, but I do read all the posts!!

Christa Your mom and your family are going right into my journal and will be in my thoughts and prayers
StephanieSuch a hard decision. Is there no one else that can come along and watch the kids :confused3 Surely there is someone, a niece, friend, etc.
Leana Hope you are feeling better soon. The longer the better on the wisdom teeth thing, I won't even tell you my horror story.

No training for me tonight, not pushing my luck after good run last night and no pain today :cool1:

Thank you everyone for all the advice. I really have thought a lot about not pushing it too hard so quickly. But I also have thought about this being my first race back and wanting to make it as good as I can!!!

So at least the full isn't filling up too quickly yet, :rolleyes1 wanted to get a few weeks back into running before I make that commitment.

Have a good night

Jeff from Oahu- I am tentatively planning the Maui Half marathon and the Honolulu Marathon plus Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the North Shore Swim Series, whatever local triathlon is happening when I have an off weekend and Xterra World Championships on Maui. I'll also work the Ironman World Champs as a physician. So really my race schedule will depend on when I'm not on call. nice thing about Hawaii is all the options.

Christa- not much to say other than you have our prayers and our :grouphug:

Skywalker Dave- there's a 15 K in early Apr in Rochester at Mendon Ponds called the Spring Forward race. It's put on by Yellow Jacket Racing/Fleet Feet Rochester folks. I plan on coming over for it but don't know if either my Mom or sister will too.

Ran 5 of the 7 days last week and skate skied 25 K/ snowshoed 30 min on the 6th day. It hit a blistering high of 17 that day but it started at -16 F. I only did 20 miles with the longest being 7 but I'm building up slowly as to avoid injury. I'm going for consistency that will eventually translate into higher overall volumes. Hopefully it will pay off in some PB times at my races in late Apr and May.

Hey all, I am packing up because I leave for a business trip to Chicago tomorrow. I needed to stop in and say... HEY!!!! I was hoping to get in some great workouts knowing that my schedule usually has gaps.... No can do. We are not staying at the convention hotel, instead it is 3-4 blocks away. Then I check and I am booked solid all say Wednesday and into the evening. WHAT!!! Then Thursday I am also booked most of the day. Come home Friday. Oh nice, so Minnie training will had to wait a bit until I get back. Really bummed about that!

I want to thank everyone for their massively supportive posts. I came home from WDW majorly depressed, but am gradually gaining momentum to get back on track, stronger, thinner and happier. I even checked my Silent Sports mag tonight and started planning out April and May races (remember I am in WI and we have bad weather through March!) Speaking of which, it is freezing rain as I type and I have to drive to Chicago tomorrow!!!!

Have a great week all. I am not thinking I will have internet unless I find a nice free hookup.... not likely!!!

Wow, I am so lost! I move to Singapore one week ago and the place looks totally different!

Ni Hao from Singapore. We just got connected to the internet today (our Tuesday/your Monday night). I see there are some groups??? Miles and minutes??? I need to catch up. Needless to say there will not be any miles or minutes here recorded until we're all signed up at the American Club. (treadmills ;) It's too hot to run outside every day!)

We're moved in but our stuff doesn't arrive for a while. It's slow going but going well at least. I was :headache: that it took so long to get internet and cable.

Nice to "see" ya'll.

Oh! One more funny thing: Chinese New Year is Feb. 7th. The celebrations began in January and end Feb. 17th. Disney is capitalizing this year for the Chinese New Year as it is the year of the rat! Our mall, Causeway Point, has Disney stuff everywhere and Mickey and Minnie banners all over. I felt a bit closer to home. ::MickeyMo

It was a lot of fun. It's a tough, hilly course, and YellowJacket/Fleet Feet put on a great spread afterwards. I would definitely run that one again assuming my hip is cooperating. I think I'm going to take a good 2 weeks off of running to let it heal up. Anyhow, if you're going to be at the race maybe I'll plan on volunteering if I can't run it.

Christa - Sorry to hear about your mom. Hope everything goes well this time around.

Vicki - Hope your stuff arrives soon and you have a great time while over there.

Angie - No big advice on what to tell your friend other than go with what feels right. I remember Lynne saying that she tends to stay back to help others get through the race even though she has trained hard for each of them. It is just what she feels is right at the time.

Krista - Hope Steve is pampering you properly. It's never too early to take it easy because in 6 months or so, you won't get much sleep.

Judy - Where are you now. It has been 12 hours and you haven't posted. ;) We are going to have to send out the troops to find you and make you post. You don't need to spend all that time in the office anyway. :lmao:

Welcome to all our new members. I look forward to getting to know you as you prepare for your races.

Hi team!

I'm trying to stay on track by posting before work, since as soon as I walk out the door this morning my day will be crazy until 10:00 tonight.

I'm planning on a 4 or 5 miler after my morning job this afternoon; forecast is for a high in the 60's so it should be beautiful!

Christa - Your mom and you are in my prayers. Sounds like she's got a good attitude.

Nessa - Welcome! My advice would be to do some smaller (5K, 10K) races on your way to the half. They're fun and help to keep up your motivation.

Laurie -Congrats on your time! You beat me by a minute. I was just trying to stay ahead of the 5:30 pace guy.

Vicki - Sounds like you're off to a great start in Singapore!

PD for all the illnesses/injuries. Happy training!

Good Morning Everyone!

Today I start my half marathon training. My first half is 4 weeks from Sunday! Today I head to the gym for a refresher course on weights from my friend who happens to be a personal trainer. Then onto the dreadmill for my miles.

Erin - Wow you certainly do have your days full! As a mom, I have to do alot of that too. I planned my sons class holiday party on a long run last fall. Just programed all the numbers into my phone and delegated everything. My running partner laughed about the 5th time I asked someone to email me to confirm because I "don't have a pen & paper with me right now." Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Nessa - Welcome! You can do it! Just remember its one step at a time and one workout at a time.

Christa - oh gees. I know how tough the second fight with cancer can be both physically and mentally. Your mom has already been though this and that can be good and it can be bad. Hopefully some of the new chemo treatments they have come out with will make this an easier battle.

Vicki - you sound so positive and I know that you are in a stressful situation. I am so glad there is lots of Mickey and Minnie to make you feel at home.

For me...I did some XT last night... Elliptical for 35 min and bike for 15 min. It's been a while since I did the elliptical, but I did and was happy with that. The weird thing...I did about 65 rpm on each the bike and elliptical, but the machines read that my heart rate was higher on the bike. I felt like I was working harder on the elliptical. :confused3 Maybe the machines are off???

Busy day at work... Hope everyone has a good day!

Whew! I caught up on the thread!

Hello to all the new people out there! I have been here only for about 3 weeks, but I don't feel new anymore so you'll feel right at home in no time. This is a truly awesome and supportive group.

Christa - I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. Sending prayers and pixie dust your way. Hang in there and have faith!

Well, I did it - I have run/walked 3 times a week for the last 3 weeks and been 100% consistent! I have never ever done that before in my life. I always talk myself out of it and miss a few workouts. It helps that I have been healthy, and that Philadelphia seems to have cancelled winter and settled for 3 months of November! However, I also feel certain that when I have a setback (and I'm sure one will come along sooner or later), that I have the commitment and support to carry me through.

I am following the Running for Mortals run/walk 5K plan, and it is working great for me! That is a great book, and if you are just starting out I suggest picking that up in addition to Marathoning for Mortals. After this week I am going to add once a week cross-training (probably elliptical, although I am looking for a yoga class that works in my schedule), and then after few weeks of being consistent with that I will add a second day of cross-training. Doing it slowly is the key for me. I am always excited to start things, but have to work on consistency.

Now I am looking for a nice 5K in Philly in late March/early April. Anyone have any suggestions?

There are so many posts each day I'm having trouble keeping up!:) Being new to the Wish Team, I have a question for those of you that have been training longer. I regularly walk 4 miles in 1 hr and would like to kick it up a notch so I can do the Minnie 15K a little faster. I think each time I try to add running to my plan,in a walk/run workout, I must add on too fast and then I go back to walking because my hip starts hurting. Does the Running for Mortals book have plans for all levels?
The Wish Team is great! I'm sure these threads will help keep me motivated through this next year. Off to work now.

I have finished my work for the day (I work from home and while it is a blessing, it can also be a curse. Kira: Congrats on staying true to your training plan. You should be SO proud of yourself!!! :cheer2: That's what i love about training for an event such as this....it allows us to redefine ourselves. Love that!!!

Stacie: Awesome on the XT girl :thumbsup2 .

Cecilia: Oh wow....4 weeks for the Half! Nice...seems you've allowed yourself a bit of recovery now right back at it. I wish my next event wasn't so far off...I need running motivation myself ;).

Yvonne!!! Nice to "see" you!!!

Vicki: I love Singapore...spent some time there back when I covered the region for my job! I hope you have a wonderful experience. So much good food! YUM!!!

On the training front....I taught 3 classes yesterday and my body is screaming...probably did about 2 hours worth of pilates. Today I taught and worked for 1.5 hours with my Pilates trainer on the reformers. Kicked my butt! So now I have to head out into the 34 degree chilly drizzle to get my 4 mile run in. NOT looking forward to that but if I don't start running soon I may never get back out there LOL!

Vicki - I hope you are having a great time in Singapore! If you need some advice for some great places to try I highly recommend these:

1. Lei Gardens Chinese restaurant (there is one along Orchard Road, another at Chjmes)
2. Brewerks brew pub at Clarke Quay (the other side of the river) for days when you really want a good burger.
3. There is a place with amazing chili crab and black pepper crab at a place called Quayside Seafood at Clarke Quay - you can recognize them with all of the orange and red tiny tiles they have decorating the outside of the place.

And don't forget to go to the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling. Good stuff!

Good luck!

Leana: Thanks for the thoughts on longer intervals. This might be a good compromise.

Christa: I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I know how difficult it can be. I'll be thinking of you and your family.

Mel: More books, more books! I'm always up for reading lists, regardless of the topics. The Interlibrary Loan folks know me very, very well. About intervals: the more people who post, the more I wonder about full-time running. I'm going to stick with it for while, but try not to be wedded to it. It certainly sounds like a smart strategy for you, given what your PA says.

Nessa: Welcome! I'm practically a newbie, too, so I'll defer to other folks. But I just wanted to let you know that I really loved MfM! It got me through the Goofy--that, and the WISH team.

Jen: Have a good (if possible? successful?) business trip and safe drive to Chicago.

Vicki: Hi! I'm glad you're getting settled in Singapore. Can't wait to hear more!

Stacie: I never trust those heart rate things. Love them for the XT and joint recovery, try to ignore their stats. Instead, I try to use PRE and take my own heart rate. Based on my experience in pretty cruddy gyms, I guess.

Kira: Whoo-hoo! I love MfM so much that I should probably sneak a peek at RfM. It sounds like you've got a good plan AND are being consistent. :cheer2:

Allyson: I'm also doing C25K! Let us know how it's going!

As for me: Strength training today. I'm trying to be more conscientious on strengthening my core, as the part of me that was most sore after the Goofy was my back. Just a reminder that I can't slack off on things. Tomorrow is another C25K day and, if I can work out the scheduling, DH and I will try another yoga class. The one we tried last week was just not for us.

But, one has to wonder why you know about a contest through HER Magazine!!!:rotfl:

Ok, yes, it's true...I got off my beind for the first time since the half!
I did 3.5 miles on the track at the Y in 46:06. I did not break any speed records though.
Note to self: always remember to take inhaler before exercising!
Since I forgot to puff on the inhaler first, I could not do any running intervals after my first 1 min. in the first mile.
Still, I got the steps in and it felt great!
I have missed my music. My Ozzy, Eminem, Pink, AC/DC...

Okay, WISH teammates. While I agree I am *inspired* to stay healthy, I spent 65 minutes on the treadmill tonight, and I hated every second of it. I had a stitch in my left side even though I remembered to use my inhaler and made a conscious effort to breathe into my belly. The only good part was that all the computation I did trying to figure out how much time I had left was probably good for my brain.

I walked for 3.5 miles. I'm glad it's over. And I came home and did 20 minutes of pilates.

I am so discouraged. I thought that week two would be easier than week one. :(

Okay, off to shower and eat dinner!

I'm really sorry I don't have time to catch up with everyone individually.

Just wanted to report that I did another 2.5 miles in 26 minutes tonight followed by stretching a VERY quick core workout. And I feel GREAT :cool1:

Tomorrow will be the true test and see if my back holds up.

Dave Thanks for the heads up I already entered.
Ms.Mighty Duck That is awesome that you stayed on there with side stich on your side and hating every second of it. I can honestly say that after all the training we have done I am convinced that pushing through the ones like that are what put us to the next level. I'm not just saying that, I mean it. And those stupid side stiches are what I had to push past for a really long time and had to majorly concentrate on my breathing.

I know exactly how you feel, there was a time over the summer I didn't even post anymore, partly because my life got turned upside down but partly because I was not proud of the workouts or lack of at the time. But I look back now and realize I needed my WISH team more than ever then. Please know that no one here judges anyone on what they accomplish. I think that is why this team conitnues to grow at an astronomical rate.

No matter what level everyone is at everyone is so encouraging because at some level or another everyone here has had their share of BAD days. We are here for you!!!

Kristi, that's so great that you were so excited to work out--you give me hope that I won't always hate it (and congrats on the tix score!).Trust me, it's taken me since the half marathon to get back out there today. I am not a fan of working out. I find every excuse in the book! But, once I am there, I am usually good to go.

I only work out since races are so much fun! If it wasn't for "rewarding" myself with a race (and getting to see all my WISH buddies :goodvibes ), I wouldn't move off the couch. Seriously!

And I am with Angie - the tough workouts are what pushes you through to the next level. Some days are just off for no reason. And you have other days where everything is fabulous. Just like real life, I suppose. Just keep at it. It is worth it.

Ok, off to bed for me. I am so addicted to the internet, it's not even funny anymore.

There are so many posts each day I'm having trouble keeping up!:) Being new to the Wish Team, I have a question for you that have been training longer. I regularly walk 4 miles in 1 hr and would like to kick it up a notch so I can do the Minnie 15K a little faster. I think each time I try to add running to my plan,in a walk/run workout, I must add on to fast because I end of going back to walking because my hip starts hurting. Does the Running for Mortals book have plans for all levels?
The Wish Team is great! I'm sure these threads will help keep me motivated through this next year. Off to work now.

I don't think I got a chance to say :welcome: I don't have an anwer to your question, but I'm sure SOMEONE on here will!!

Okay, off to shower and eat dinner!

ms.mightyduck, I'm so happy for you that you pushed through a tough work out today. I myself hate the treadmill, but now that mine has torn up I really miss it. Here is hoping the next treadmill encounter is more to your liking. :wizard:

I've enjoyed all of my runs post-Marathon, but today I am having problems with my knee and my muscles hurt and are really tight. I'm not sure what's going on, but I don't want to skip a run tomorrow, but I may have to delay it.

Thanks, all. I was really feeling like a phony hanging out here with such cool athletes and I am so not an athlete.

Angie, thanks again. I'll keep at it.

Kristi, thanks for the encouragement. I'll let you know if I ever have a fabulous day! But I am glad to hear that it could still happen for me....

Chris, sorry to hear you are having some muscle issues. I have to use the treadmill at this point because it is too cold for me to be outside. I hope you can get your run in tomorrow!

Lily, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like this exercise stuff!

That is sooo funny you said that because as you were posting this I was on the BIO thread posting my story and one of the things I refer to over and over is that I have never been an athelete and never thought I would be. If you have a second read it, it is such a huge coincidence :lmao:

Good for you duckie! Perserverance (sp?), you've got it! :thumbsup2

I did W1D2 of the Couch to 5K today. I finished and thought, boy that was slow and harder than it was the other day. Then I caught myself and decided at least I did it right? Better to do it slowly than not do it at all? I swear I am quickly learning that there is such a mental aspect to all of this. You really can so easily (at least I can) bring yourself down.

You just unlocked the key to this whole training thing!! And why for someone like me it has changed my life. I used to be such a quitter, but because I pushed through stinker runs and have accomplished so much my whole attitude and outlook on all aspects of my life has changed.

Congratulations on your accomplishments, I am sure there will be many more to come.

Sharon...not sure about Running for Mortals, but MFM has a pretty good transition program. I trained for my first half using the walk/run the half plan.

Duckie...dude, you're with us...and you're an athlete now. Welcome to your first stonker (that's Helen-ish for bad walk/run ;) ). I have to :worship: anyone who can stand 65 minutes on the TM. I'm only good for about 30 before I start wanting to jump off the back.

Allyson...the mental aspect of training is hard! Great job pushing through!

Debra...maybe we need a WISH team book club :) . BTW, Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer for the mental aspects of training.

I have nothing training-wise to report tonight. So much for jumping on the XT bandwagon with this new training schedule :rolleyes1

Please stop by the RaceReady shirt thread if you're interested in getting a WISH team tech shirt. We're getting close to ordering and I need some opinions.

OK, TEAM, did you read that???!!! :lmao:

Duckie, (love the nickname) you are now one of our favorite people...:cloud9:

Seriously, though, the thing that makes this group so awesome is that we run the gamut from those doing 6 minute miles :faint: to those just starting out at maybe a 20 minute mile. Those training for ultras and tri's to those completing their first mile. EVERY accomplishment is celebrated and every stonker commiserated with (like that 50 cent word? ;) ). That's what this board is all about. To let you know that you do not have to do this alone. To be able to share what you are experiencing with a group that understands. :grouphug: To many, many of us the idea that we could be called athletes was a foreign concept. You made our day. :flower3:

Did someone mention my name?

Well last night I joined the new running club who all seem very nice - the guy who runs it has even run Disney back in 1997. 5k was pretty tough though - I haven't 'raced' it for about a year so I took off way too fast - thinking that perhaps being able to run 39.3 miles 2 weeks ago might carry me through a 9.50min mile for 5k - WRONG - felt great for 2km, but, by the halfway point, I was suffering. Took me 31.06 in the end. Tim ran too - he did 2km, and now is the proud owner of the course record (of course now he wants to know where his medal is)!.

They also told me about a race that sounds fun - it's a 20 miler and goes from an island just off Tasmania to the 'main land' - I'm assuming there's a bridge rather than my having to develop superpowers, but all the locals come out to watch, and they do this because they bet on you. You have a big dinner the night before when they check out your form, your handicap time and your shape - he said, some of them even do fat pinch tests - then they wager on your chance of being first past the post - which, as it's a handicap start doesn't necessarily mean the faster runner wins!

Not much else to report here - at some point I will learn how to put my little team picky in my signature and lose the Goofy (sniff, sniff). But noy now, it's 6pm here now so I'm off to lie on the sofa for a couple of hours. Helen

MightyDuck - We call it the dreadmill or DM for a reason. I can't stand being on there longer than 35 minutes so anyone who can do longer times is amazing. As you probably noticed, flattery will get you everything here. :lmao:

Angie - So glad that you feel good after your workout. Before long you will be passing us again.

Kristi - Great for getting out there. We will provide all the motivation for you, unless of course you are not on the team Panda assigned me to, in which case lifting the remote is great excercise. ;)

Allyson - Great job getting out there. There will be easy days and difficult days but getting the steps in is the most important. It does get easier after that little bump in the beginning.

Helen - That sounds like an interesting race. Although I don't know if I really want to know what people think about me running...

Mel - But lifting the remote on the sofa can be XT if you do it enough times( see above). :rolleyes1 As long as the kids are still long enough, I can bench press them but then they begin to think wiggling will give me more excercise. :lmao:

I decided to go out last night and was able to complete 3 miles and my leg didn't give me any problems. I figure I will take it slow for a little bit longer and make sure it doesn't hurt, then get ready for the half marathon at the end of February. So now I can be ready for the competition instead of just weighing down the team. :rolleyes1 Except for leaving town this weekend I think the training may be back on schedule. Lynnda needs mucho brownie points for getting me/family organized for this trip as well.

Hi team!

Well I got in 5 miles yesterday and it was great to be back out there again! I started off way too fast so my "back" was slower than my "out" but not too bad. I got myself a new watch (Nike, since my Timex Ironman died in the 2nd mile of the marathon) and I like its larger display. Us "master" athletes need all the help we can get!

SamSam - I've always taken plans and modified them so they work for me. Just add in small bits of running - 30 seconds at a time if that's what it takes. You will get there - patience!

Debra - I'm right there with you concentrating on core strength. I had major back issues during the full so I'll really be working on that this year.

Ms. Duck - I think week 2 is ALWAYS harder than week 1. I promise that it will get better and you will begin to enjoy it more. Just stick with the plan and stick with us; we'll get you through!

Allyson - That mental aspect is huge. I am definitely my own worst enemy when running sometimes!

Today I'll be xting with the bike and weights at the Y.

Happy training!

Ahh! You guys are right where I am today! These are the days when we trudge through workouts with no joy or excitement to them. It will get better so STICK WITH IT! at least thats what I tell myself.

I put together my entire 2008 training program yesterday and it was a bit depressing. Who signed me up for all these races? What was I thinking? Boy is that alot of training! I took the total miles calculator off because I couldn't bear to see what it said.

The whole time I was working on the spread sheet I was thinking that I hate running. That's because I did an interval work out on the dreadmill yesterday. Ran a mile at 8:45mm then dropped down to 10:00mm and timed my recovery then repeated that two more times. first recovery took 5 minutes, second took 8 minutes and the third took um well, more than 11 minutes? :rolleyes1 I felt a little nauseated when I got off the treadmill. I think speed is over rated.

Ms MightyDuck, there are MANY days that I am not all that excited about working out. It's like Allyson said, "at least I did it right?" Thats where accountability plays a part. For me, that means having someone waiting to run with me or else having to report how many miles I ran. Oh and Allyson, Way to go! As for the time etc, you are going to have good days and bad days and occasionally a great day. The key is sticking with it when all those bad days run together.

I'm assuming there's a bridge rather than my having to develop superpowers :lmao: Wow that sounds like an awesome race! I would love that handicap thing. Glad you found a group to run with, it makes training so much more fun.

Keep it up - spring is coming.

Be careful **Helen**. Maybe there is no bridge and this is how the locals weed out false prophets. Only those who can run on water pass the test.

Quick drive by- before the pages start piling on, I've got to say-

Helen, if you have enough self-confidence to even contemplate a race where people look at your running form, bet on you, and pinch for fat:scared1: , you are an even stronger woman than I realized!

I think I can get in a quick run tonight. I'm hoping I've taken off enough time to be back to normal with my IT band. There's a 5k bridge run I'd like to do in a couple of weeks. Yes, I recognize how ridiculous I am to be considering a bridge run when my IT band hates hills, but I have a very good reason to do it.... I did it last year with DD and we were so slow they only had 1 medal left, so of course I gave it to DD, but it's bothered me for a year that I didn't get my medal....:rolleyes1

But you didn't. You stuck with it, even when it didn't feel good to do so, even when it didn't feel like an accomplishment. And you came here, because deep down you know your WISH team has been there. And that we support and admire you for your efforts & your spirit.

Just trust what the others have said. It's not only the days that are easy or fun that really define us and help make us become stronger. It's the days where we struggle and question ourselves. As Kristi said, like real life. (And yes, when I go through those days I do it kicking and screaming and whining, "But it's not faaaaiiiiirrrr." Hey, whatever gets you through.)

Today I have an appt with my pod to finally get my custom orthodics. I have a big bag of my active running shoes to bring with me. I want him to see the wear patterns and see what he thinks. This should be interesting.

MSDave - Thanks for noticing I was missing. I was just teasing everyone. ;) I was in what seemed like a Groundhog Day meeting all last week preparing for a meeting that was yesterday. Now I feel like a free woman. YAY!:yay: Back to more important things, like WISH. How is your new job going? Is this in addition to your regular job? Sounds like you might be putting in a lot of hours there.

WFloydBill - OK maybe I wasn't totally missing from the DIS. You know I do have to keep up on the DCL and now the DVC forums. I know, I know, it's tough but I manage. I did get a voicemail from Sunny right before the Half. Cam actually spoke to her. Umm, Lynnda needs mucho brownie points for a lot of things, I think. :teeth:

Leana - Oh I hope you feel better. You are such an active person I can imagine having bronchitis must be so annoying for you.

Jackie - Oh you made me LOL! :rotfl: I'm back now so don't you worry! I'll be there with you!

Christa - Oh Christa......Prayers for your mom.

Diane - Umm, well, I haven't signed up for the Challenge because, well, ummmm.... :rolleyes1

Vicki - Here's a looong distance wave!

Kristi - OMG there's no Goo in your signature!! Get off the internet.

Helen - "Superpowers" Let me know how that works out for you.

OK I have to clean up my office. Which means putting everything that I haven't gotten to in the last week and a half into nice neat little piles. Which I will then ignore and go out to lunch. :)

I HATE the DREADmill! I have done 10 miles on it but hated every second of it...but anyway....to encourage you, I have been running a long time and todays WO was not easy either. Sometimes you just have an off day...but WTG for sticking to it. About the stitch...all my running buddies say that is from dehydration.....I agree with them......if you stick with the running, there will come a time where you really enjoy it.

Ran 5.6 miles on the trails with an 8.30 pace. I think it was hard b/c after swimming 2000 yrds yesterday, I hopped on my bike and rode a little over 10 miles...into a huge headwind....it was hard to keep the bike even moving so the ride was not fast. Hi all. I have been MIA on this thread since last week but I do have some training to report. I was able to get a run in at Ft Wilderness on Saturday (not sure what kind of milage or anything I just had fun getting out there) Here are some pictures

I stopped to take a picture of some water (not the cleanest looking water)
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/73673Ft_Wilderness-med.jpg
But when I stopped I realized this was coming out of the bushes
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/73673Ft_Wilderness_deer-med.jpg
Then I saw a baby and realized it was a whole family - they watched me but went on with crossing the road
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/73673Ft_Wilderness_3_deer-med.jpg

I saw other things on the run as well but for some reason they didn't get uploaded onto my picture gallery and I don't have them with me :rolleyes1

Here is a pic of me and my neice at the end of Saturday's Pirate and Princess Party - this was the 2nd night of being out until after 1 AM :scared1: (no wonder we came home exhusted!!)
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/747/73673Ft_Wilderness_me_and_manthies_at_p_p_party-med.jpg

We had such a great time. I can't WAIT to go again in May since my neice wants to run the 5k.

Today I did manage to get in 1.5 miles (even though I planned on doing at least 2) my calves were hurting so bad I decided to stop at 1.5 (I was on the TM or else I would have ended up probably doing the 2 miles) So yeah today seems to be a stonker of a day for alot of people!! Here's hoping it gets better!!

I know clothes don't make the man, or in this case shoes don't make the woman but I just got back from my first trip to a real running store and got myself a pair of real running shoes! The lady there was great! Had me walk around, go on the treadmill, run outside. I tried on around 6 different pairs and she would watch me run.

What a difference! Gosh they feel so much cushier than my regular old sneakers. They are a full size bigger than what I normally wear. I ended with asics GT 2130 and I will say in addition to feeling good on the feet, they are mighty purty too! :goodvibes

I just got back from my podiatrist with my shiny new red custom orthodics. We put them in my ASICS and I walked around a bit. They feel pretty good but we'll see. I'm hesitant about them but he thinks they will really help.

We looked over the tread wear patterns. I really do supinate. Plus I am a mid-sole striker. Who knew!? Anyway, he explained to me that I don't hit heel first. My heel tread is like brand new. I hit mid-sole then I am supposed to roll to the inside of my foot and push off the ball of my foot with my big toe. I don't do that. I push off on the outside of my foot. This also explains why my toes tend to "fold" over underneath each other, which after about 9 or 10 miles is very painful.

So all this was good info as I am about to start the search for new running shoes.:thumbsup2

I  my podiatrist! He said "These should really help someone like you who runs so much."

Trisha - aha proof I don't hallucinate (well other than after mile 20 anyway), I saw a deer on the other side of the road when we pulled into the marathon expo, i was very worried about it, hopefully it's one of your ones just taking a longer than normal stroll round the grounds. We also had a raccoon saunter in front of the car when we pulled into our hotel on the 192 (which then climbed half way up a tree and just kind of hung there looking fluffy) and an armadillo munching it's way through something or another. Now I'm aware this is probably not exciting to all of you - but we only get kangaroos hopping down the side of the road here (actually I haven't seen a live one yet, just a few 'sleeping in the sun'!!!!!) so that lot was exotic.....

Hi, gang. I realized I forgot to update my progress on this thread. Another C25K day, plus another 50 minutes walking on the treadmill. I also thought I should figure out how long it takes me to do a 5K at this point of the C25K. I'm not even ready to post a time, that's how slow. I'm trying not to be down about the pace, even though my time included a 5 minute warm-up. Still...ugh.

I think maybe my mood has more to do with my sore throat and a feeling of impending doom--oops, I mean my impending cold. It makes me tired and cranky. So I'm just calling it a day now. After all, I want to be in tip-top shape for February! :thumbsup2

I'll try to catch up with you all later. Happy training and a good night, all!

Hi Team

Just updating from my world. Hold on to your hats...I actually ran today! :cool1: It was a 3 miler on the treadmill b/c the wind was WICKED here. I set it to hills mode and just went! In addition I took a mat pilates class and taught one as well. I'm a wee bit tired tonight ;).

Deekaypee....Feel better girl. Go get some rest! :goodvibes

Kristi: Super sweet 16....one of those guilty pleasures. Aren't those kids just monsters????

Tricia: Cool pics!! :thumbsup2 Thanks for sharing.

Christa: 8:30 pace on the trails!!! :worship: You are da' bomb!

Judy: Good luck with the orthotics. You do have to give them time...b/c at first they will feel really awkward. I hope they give you the relief you need!!! :)

Christa and Krista: To answer the Iron Man question. I think we call them IronGods and IronGoddesses. Those people have my utmost respect. I can't even imagine how they do it.

It feels so wonderful to read all of these posts! It makes me feel like there are so many people I can relate to!!
I came down with a humdinger of a cold last weekend--pretty much did nothing but sleep. I went outside for my first run since then and felt absolutely horrible, but when finished......felt so great!
I tried to run a 4 mile loop, and prob walked most of it, since I had coughing spells lasting a few minutes each, and the temp here was 22 degrees. I usually don't go out when the temp is below 28 because that seems to exacerbate my asthma, so I guess that is another reason my lungs felt so bad. But I just HAD to get outside.......

All you NC WISHers - has anyone else looked at this race?

I'm kinda thinking a weekend at the beach in March might be nice... especially since I waited too late for the Myrtle Beach Half.

In the absence of all activity thanks to this bout with bronchitis I put together my training plan for the entire year....

Minnie training officially starts the week after next and from there I jump into training for the marathon in Quebec City. Two weeks off after that and time to start training for Disney. Whew, it is going to be busy!

The worst thing about this sick thing is I get majorly winded and dizzy after going up a flight of stairs. I told my dad that you would never know I ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago as I feel soooo out of shape.

No you weren't hallucinating - there are lots of deer in the WDW area. We actually saw a few more from the bus as we were on our way back from the parks. We also saw wild turkeys on the side of the road. On Thursday afternoon there were quite a few turkeys. Kinda funny you have to specify that its a "real" deer or turkey as opposed to a Disney deer or turkey!! LOL I would be SO excited to see a kangaroo just hopping down the side of the road. To me that is exotic!!

As far as training for me today - only managed 1.5 miles because my dang calves were killing me again. Man I have got to get them worked out and stretched since I am planning on siging up for a 5k today - the 5k is next Sunday (I am just going to the running store today to sign up - to save that dang Active.com fee!!) I might also join the local Road Runner club. They have membership renewals the beginning of the year so if I am going to join I better join before to much of the year goes by. Does anyone else think its a good idea to join the local Road Runner club? I am not sure if I should just sign up individual ($25) or sign up as a family for $30 even though my DH doesn't really run??

Please ignore the conspicuous lack of training in this post. :rolleyes2

I guess WWDave doesn't come to the weekly thread anymore, hu? :confused3

WFloydBill - No, no, you guys come first. I'm just trying to spread the love around, KWIM?

Jackie - Excellent! :thumbsup2 Did you oversleep today? I did. I think I'm going to have to move the alarm to the other side of the room. I'll have to do my 40 tonight when I get home and I hate that. I'd much rather do it in the morning. Grrrrr.

Amy - Thanks. I did have orthodics made for my work shoes and I just can not wear them. I feel like the housekeeper in The Bird Cage. Ever see that movie? OMG that scene when he puts shoes on is hysterical! :lmao: Anyway, thanks, I hope they help too. I'm OK up to about ten or so miles. After that my feet really start hurting. And YAY for you for getting on the TM and Pilates AND teaching it! Phew, I'm tired just reading that!

Leana - You are not at all out of shape. You're sick! Take it easy, you'll be back to your old running machine self in no time. :thumbsup2

Did 6 miles last night on the parents treadmill. It felt pretty good and I don't even mind getting on a treadmill anymore. I don't love it don't get me wrong. Took me 70 minutes.

My legs still feel sore and my knee is still not great, but it feels better. :thumbsup2

Just did W1D3 of the Couch to 5K. I used the podcast for the first time and LOVED it! Made it so nice to know when to run, when to walk. The music is not my pick necessarily, very techno and brought me back to my college clubbing days  but I really like the having someone tell me when to start and stop and telling me I CAN do it!

I think I might do W1 again. I just kind of feel like I could use more time before moving on to the W2.

Used the new shoes for the first time too and they felt good!

Questions for all the mom's who were able to run/walk throughout their pregnancy: how long can I expect to keep running? When do I need to drop down to a walk and then a crawl? How long can I expect to be able to do longish mileage (like 5-6)? I'm working on my schedule for this year and I have it planned up until my due date--8/12, but I don't know long to plan on running or if I need to start walking like in June or July. Am I only going to be able to do 3 miles for a long run on Saturday, or can I realistically plan on 5 or 6 (I don't plan on going over 6-7 miles any time over the next few months) for a long run/walk?

Thanks!

My mom has been borrowing my treadmill, but now she wants to give it back!!! I am SOOOO excitied, since it will be getting hot here soon and my running outside days will be OVER!

I have done the Power Pump class 2 weeks in a row at the gym, I am hoping to just make it part of my weekly routine!

We see deer quite often at Disney, my boys are always looking real hard to see if they can find them.

My good eating is proabably out the window for today since my uncle from Ohio called and asked if we wanted to meet him at Boma tonight for dinner--YUM!!!!!

Krista: My best answer to your question is you will know when to drop back as your body is going to be very clear in letting you know it is time. For me with each of mine, it was different. I got huge quick with my daughter and was down to walking quickly and with my son, everytime I ran I bled which was just some strange happening with my body reaction to testosterone but it made me nervous enough to drop it down. I hope someone else has a better answer but I found both with running and lifting that my body said enough and I was more than ready to listen!!!

Hi team!

I'm trying to keep up with my team thread and this thread; whew!

I got out and did 4 miles today after work. Sunny, but the wind was cold enough to get me to cover my ears. I am just so happy to be running again!

Tomorrow I'm taking out my 2 new runner friends again; since it's supposed to rain I'm giving them a break and taking them to the indoor track at the Y. I guess after we're done I'll do my own workout as the 1/2 run/walk really doesn't do it for me anymore!

Happy training!

Krista - yeah, what Lisa said. (I am no expert though!) I knew a woman years ago. She was having her first at 40 and she was a runner. She kept running right up until 7 mos., I think. It's not like you are starting an exercise program now. You are fit and have been doing this a long time. Just make sure not to push it and listen to what your body is telling you. There are aerobics teachers out there that teach their classes until the week they deliver! You'll be fine.

Today was supposed to be 3.5 miles. I say 'supposed to be' since the Walk/Jog DVD did me in yesterday! I really don't think it's wise to push more on my legs today. Besides, I need to save my strength for our big competition starting tomorrow! ;)

Krista--Hmmm, no good advice from me, as I stopped doing any productive as soon as I had a positive pregnancy test:rolleyes1 Unless running to Krispy Kreme counts. I do know that one of the better women runners I knew through my dad, ran until she was 7 months preggers--and the president of our mommy and me group ran/walked right up until delivery:eek:

Speaking of running, I did get back in the gym today. Was supposed to be there yesterday for work and workout, but we had a terrible wind storm Tuesday afternoon that knocked out the poor in the gym. They were w/o power for 24hours. Did a little over 3 miles today and then some hard weight work on abs and arms. I'm really glad that the team contest starts tomorrow. Since I don't have a race planned in the near future, I'll feel like my miles are actually meaning something again.

Krista: Hmmmm, funny little story here...take it for what it's worth.
About 3 years ago there was a woman who went to my gym. She was a teeny, tiny thing with a humungo baby belly. This woman was on the treadmill every day for a long time and going FAST! Not walking, but all out running. My friend and I would just look at one another and think "that can't be good for her...or the baby" Well, she was gone for about a week and then came back...with the baby, and all were perfectly healthy. So it turned out OK. But wait, there's more.....My hubby and I now see her every Sunday at church with her husband and the kid (now almost 3) who is absolutely adorable, but a holy terror! It's hysterical because the woman and her husband have to take turns chasing after this little guy because HE NEVER STOPS MOVING! (and I know why!)
So be very careful...or you may get one of those also! :lmao: :lmao:

Renee: do you go to the Kerr Y? Do you know who I'm talking about? :rotfl:

Not only are there deer at WDW but also armidillos. We've seen them over at the campground.

Did 2.5 miles on the eliptical last night along with some good stretching and want to know -- HOW do I get those times on the treadmill??:confused3 On there I can do an easy 13:20 mile with what feels like no more than a walking pace/stride but not on the TM. Right now there is no way to walk outside (currently in the process of getting 7"+ of snow). I've been reading walking techniques and find that trying to push off with the toes doesn't work real well on the TM. Does thru the office though as one of my co-workers can attest to. :rolleyes1 Any suggestions? Other than move south, and I'm working on that. ;)

Provided roads aren't horrific, will hit gym for bike & core time on way home.

Liz - Is that one of the funniest scenes ever?!?!?! :rotfl2: Well, that's me in my dress shoe orthodics. I must be doing something wrong.

ETA: Liz, I've done about 80% of my training for both Halfs, both Minnies and the ToT on the TM. Besides watching a LOT of movies, I don't think the TM is all that accurate. Do you have a Garmin and can you get outside once in a while to check your "real" pace? I'm always much faster on the pavement when I think I'm doing about the same pace as I do on the TM.

Hey, all! Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm feeling better today as the cold has finally decided to blossom. Sometimes I think getting sick is worse than being sick, at least for minor illnesses. Anyway, I didn't want to XT today, but thought I'd better man up & do it, else what would my fellow WISHers think? You're all great for motivation.

I also decided to walk to the library and see if my ILL copy of Chi Running had come in. No dice, but I did pick up George Sheehan's This Running Life & Hal Higdon's Run Fast to tide me over; thanks for your suggestions. It also gave me a little 3 mile (@15mm pace) jaunt outside in the sunny, warmer-than-yesterday weather, which helped lighten my mood. :goodvibes

Allyson: You've given me shoe envy! It sounds like you had a great fitting experience.

Kristi: WTG with the kick-butt motivation. I've never done Lesley Sansone, but I hear good things.

marsuzcos: Another PAer! :thumbsup2 I'm super-impressed that you're getting out there in the cold & WITH a cold!

Chris: 6 miles on the TM--yea! I'm like you, I don't mind the TM. (And don't tell anyone...sometimes I LIKE it.)

Christy: I'm looking around at new classes, trying to decide what fits in my schedule, what might be fun, etc. What do you like about Power Pump?

Renee: :woohoo: for being a good coach to your friends! You're a true WISHer!

Liz: I can't really speak to the elliptical, but I've experienced the same thing Judy has, re: treadmill vs. pavement. I seem to be much faster (for me, anyway) on the ground for the same effort. It messes with my mind, esp. seeing most of my LRs for the Goofy were on the TM.

To anyone I missed or didn't respond to, I probably didn't have anything intelligent to say. But I wish you all happy & healthy training!

Hey all. Yesterday when I got home from work, my DH suggested we go walk outside instead of my using the treadmill. It was cold and windy (I couldn't feel my hands in my gloves for much of the walk), but we walked over 3 miles on trails in a nearby state park. The doggie was thrilled! I didn't hate it anywhere near as much as I had the treadmill the day before, and no side stitch, either.

I took tonight off so that I can start racking up time and miles tomorrow! ;)

Allyson, thank you so much for your encouragement. I know we're going to be great motivators for each other over the next year! Oh, and the Asics you are talking about were my #2--they are so cute! And while clothes don't matter, I bought some coolmax pants for my workouts--so much more comfy than the cotton (and cuter, too!).

Mel, I'm not a treadmill fan (and I hate how it feels like the floor is moving when I get off after an hour), but because of my asthma, I'm not supposed to walk outside (yesterday, I was tempting fate but couldn't face the treadmill!).

Maharae, I'm so impressed with how much knowledge and experience exists here on these boards. You all ARE supercool athletes, and I'm honored to hang around here with you. I never thought I'd join another gym, let along a "racing team"! Thank you to you and everyone else here who make newbies feel so welcome.

Helen, that sounds like an outrageously fun time (if you have the courage to let other pinch you to place bets!). I like the superpower idea. It does seem less exciting if there's a bridge now that you brought up the superpowers....

Bill, since the DM has to be my friend I try to avoid demonizing it any more than necessary--or I might not go back! I don't like it, ever, and if I thought I could get my walking in regularly without it, I probably wouldn't do it at all.

Renee, I had no idea week 2 would be harder! Thanks for the encouragement and for letting me know I'm not alone in that.

Cecilia, I totally agree with the accountability thing. I've told everyone I'm in training and that's why I volunteered to captain a team here--it forces me to follow through and not give up!

Debra, thanks for your kind words. I had no idea the real athletes here also have days they just don't want to do it, let alone don't like it!

Christa, holy cow, running? I'm just walking. I'm not sure I could even wog... And thanks for the stitch note--I'll make a point of drinking lots before working out! I had a stomach bug over the weekend, so perhaps I needed to focus more on rehydrating myself....

Krista, thanks for cheering me on--this week, I sure needed it!

Tricia, we did the Pirate and Princess party last August--I hope you had a blast! We loved it!

Judy, I hope those orthotics work for you--I admire you for going 13 miles in shoes that hurt--that will probably be my downfall. I hate when my feet hurt! And good luck finding new non-hurty shoes, too!

Amy, I wish I could have taken your mat class--there one at my gym is only once a week at a time I can go.

Debra, Leana, and Marsuzcos, hope you are feeling better! Being sick sucks! I admire all of you for exercising even when you feel bad!

Chris, that's twice as fast as I am on the TM! Nice! Glad to hear you are feeling better.

Christy, ooh--Boma! We never made it there, even when we stayed at AKL (DH had just returned from the Persian Gulf and slept through most of that stay). Have something yummy for me!

Renee, I agree--this thread is hard to keep up with! I fell asleep last night after dinner and I'm trying to catch up!

Carrie, thanks for the encouragement! I'm glad to know that so many people don't like the DM!

:wave2: GOOD EVENING TEAM!!

I'm getting so excited for everyone with their new training plans at the beginning of a new year. :woohoo: I love being able to start over. Not really, but I am trying to convince myself. :)

So reading everyone's post I have realized a MAJOR mistake we always made when we were training before that most definately could have majorly aggravated our injuries. We NEVER cross trained :scared1: We mostly just ran, like 5 days a week. I HATE the elliptical and I DESPISE the bike even more. :headache: OK pretty harsh but I would rather just run. But in order to avoid further injury beginning Saturday morning I WILL force myself on that elliptical if it's the last thing I do.

So tonight I did BodyFlow - combo: yoga, pilates, back -- perfect for my continued recovery. I would much rather be getting off the treadmill a sweaty mess, but ya know :confused3 what can you do? Tomorrow night I will ease my way into an easy 3 miles. I will repeat the easy runs I did this week into next week and then I hope to slowly start notching it up into MINNIE training mode.

Angie, you will be amazed at how much XT will help you. Amazed.

I'm glad to hear that you are doing it and was going to stress the stretching at the end of every w/o. That is majorly important too.

Don't worry about stretching in the beginning. Muscles are cold and should be warmed up first. Start out slow and you will do great!

so I'm new to this Half marathon stuff... and I really went tortoise slow in the Half in disney ---

so tell me why do I have 2 black toenails that dh says say goodbye to?

I mean I like my toes, and the nails that go with them... and if they are black, why do I get pains from the one Big toenail?? I mean really - this is the result of "running" I cant imagine why more people dont participate!! oh joy...

will I lose more nails at the 8K?

(and I did get fitted shoe wise at a running specialty store, and I was surprised at the sizing... now I am grateful!)

Krista - just got the new Runner's World mag (best friend got me a subscrip for Christmas) and it has an article on Paula Radcliffe. I didn't read the whole thing but I thought of you because the story is called Pregnant Pause and it talks about her pregnancy (ok she ran an "easy" 10k at 6 months preg in something like 42 minutes!!! :scared1: oh and she slowed her pace to 6:30 miles instead of 5:30 :scared1: :scared1: ) Besides that the story really looks interesting.

Ms. Duck - yes we had a great time at the P&P party. My neice hadn't been to WDW since 2004 when she was 7. She is now 10 and wanted to ride all those rides that :scared1: her before just to see if she was still scared!! Of course she wasn't!! She did tell me she was a little scared on Dinosaur but I reminded her it wasn't real. The party was fun -I just wish I would have been able to see the parade (too crowded and we got over there too late  ) but the fireworks were excellent.

All who are sick - :wizard: take care of yourselves and get better.

Debra - don't tell anyone but at times I like my TM as well. Lately though I have felt like  when I get on it.

Right now I don't really have a training schedule but I am trying to get a little something in there so I don't die when I start 15k training in the end of Feb. I am doing a 5k next Sunday but I am not too worried about that (I probably am more worried about getting there on time since last race that was right down the street I was almost late - at least at this race I know its going to be chip timed so I will be sure to get my chip!!) I might pull my bike out after work and go for a ride - start out the mile championship good!! ;)

Happy Friday everyone!!! :cool2:

ANgie - OMG, you guys ran 5 days a week and never did XT? HAve you read MFM? Even though you a by nomeans a starter, I think you would benefit greatly from talk of over training and inspiration stories. (I must admit I'm not great at XT, but started yoga in AUgust adn I think it's the only reason I'm still running and made it through the marathon.)

Anne - I'm hungry now! Thanks fro teh fun pix!

Kristi - 2YR old shoes and cotton socks? :faint:

Sandy - One More Mile has contests fro new shirt logans. One of my favorites was "Toenails are for SIssies!" Welcome to teh club! ;)

OMG, I remember when I was queen (or co-queen) of long posts around here. I'm thinking Duckie would have kicked my booty even then, though! It's so great to get teh excitement from teh newer team members agin. Thank you!

Hi team!

I got my two new friend out and they're all exciting about finding a 5K to train for - it's pretty cool! I hope I can help them to keep up their motivation and get them as strangely addicted as we all are! After they left (we had to do the indoor track today) I did a little bike to finish getting warmed up and then weights.

Krista - I thought about you today; at the Y they had a magazine called "Fit Pregnancy" that may help you out as you try to figure this out. (I didn't read it as I live in a relatively small town and didn't want to start any rumors!)

Angie - XT will really help you. I didn't xt when training for the half and had lots more issues than I did training for the full with xt. I'm not crazy about it either! My goal this year is to add more weight training. (And "more" won't be hard!)

Anne - Yum!

Sandy - I have 4 words for you: dark red nail polish. Welcome to the club!

Have a great weekend!
(and go Herc's Heroes!)

Many o fus have the chips, because they're more fun than teh standard cip adn we have to buy al things running or Disney. ;) The chip they give you is just fine, though, and they will make sure it works at the expo.

Here's the link to percent capacity. (http://disneyworldsports.disney.go.com/dwws/en_US/marathon/events/detail?name=MarathonWeekendRegisterDetailPage)

I guess I need to read up on what XT involves because Carrie mentioned Yoga and now you mentioned weights. I love both of those and do both of those so maybe it won't be so bad after all. :)

Angie - MfM counsiders XT to be anything that isn't running or walking. Walking is not XT for a runner because it uses too many of the same muscles. XT is supposed to work teh mroe supporting muscles.

Good Morning Everyone and Happy Friday!

Well didn't get to gym last night as it took over an hour to get home (usually a 30 min drive). However as I shoveld last night and this morning I don't feel too bad about it. 8" of snow takes a bit to clear.

Working from home today :surfweb: so will be able to get into gym a little earlier this afternoon. Going to pick up an exerbike this weekend which will be great and trying to find a good running store to see about getting fitted for shoes. Mine just don't seem to feel right lately.

Thanks for the info on the TM. Always do seem to move faster outside. I just racked it up to enjoying being outside and not have that console in my way.

Greetings all! We are having a lovely ice storm! Grrrrrrrrrr. :cold:

Somehow I really pulled something in my right hip. I don't know how, could be old age. It didn't bother me when I was on the TM this morning though. I did 40 min and mixed it up a bit. Added some inclines and sprints. It was hard but felt really good!

Krista - Did you get the new RW yet? It has an article just for you! :yay:

Angie - I'm SO with you on the lack of XT thing. I am very very bad about that. I keep trying to do something else, yoga, Pilates, strength training. I really MUST! You are so right. We NEED to XT. :woohoo:

OptimatorMike - I was wondering where you went! Yea, but you know you sure say some pretty funny things! We count on you for that! :lmao:

Anne! Anne, that is so mean! :cake: It's not even a scratch and sniff! So, are you sending me a piece or what??? I LOVE that Mickey cake! Can you make me one? Hu? Please please! :yay:

Kristi - Yes, yes I am. I'll do it right now. Let me think.....getting out calculator...2008 = 47, 2009 = 48, 2010 = 49, 2011 = Full!

Paul - You out there?

OK, I think I officially have walkers/runners block. After shutting things down in December to try and work out the latest back issues, I have been unable to get going again. I only have 49 weeks, 18.5 hours until the 2009 WDW half marathon start and need to get moving (and losing if I want one of the new team tech shirts). I have mapped out a training plan for most of the year, dusted off the old shoes (which have relatively low milage), bought a new set of shoes for later as they were really cheap (close out, plus sale, plus discount code and I figure I probably won't get too many hundreds of miles on my shoes given my weight). I also sent in my registration for 2009 2 weeks ago and am excited about being there this time, being ready and partying with the WISHers. Only problem is, I just can't get the steps started. I know its time to just "Do It" (tm Nike, Inc.), but I am starting to think I am developing a fear of possibly succeeding at this crazy idea of mine to be a distance athlete.

Oh, by the way, don't tell Senior Master Sargent/Captain Big Vic I came here to get this off my chest. He may try to trade me for a late round draft pick and future considerations in the Challenge Game.

Hey Bill -- know how you feel as the 2009 WDW 1/2 will be my first one as well but last fall I just decided to get up off the couch and start moving. Hardest part is starting but believe me - once you get going it's not only much easier to stay moving but it just feels good - mentally and physically. Did the 5K in Jan this year and can't wait for my next one!

So come on and just take that first step!

Bill - Start small. I don't know what training plan you are using, but don't start with anything too overwhelming. When I started training for the 2007 Half I started with 20 min on the TM at 3.2 and I was THRILLED! Start small and keep adding, no more than 10% a week. And hang around here. We'll keep you going.

[B]You sure it's not 2012?
You know seeing as it's the beginning of Jan. '12?
I mean, I won't 'qualify' for the Full until 10/2011... ;)
So, doing it 1/2011 would be cheating and early, you see. :lmao:

Bill - I will hop in the car with Lisa and come find you! :rotfl:
No worries, seriously. You can do this!

Ok, we are off to buy Chad his much needed running shoes.
And then off to the movies while Zack is still at preschool. popcorn::
I love this day care/preschool thing! We get to go on an afternoon date! :cloud9:

Does anyone here want to read his book?
I finished it and would be happy to ship it to someone who might enjoy it.
Even though I am NEVER doing any crazy ultra races, I thought it was a very good book.

Bill - Use teh 10 minute rule. Go home tonight adn tell yourself you are going to do a work out. If, after 10 minutes, you just want to stop, that's ok. You did something. Most of teh time, you will keep going. However, it's easier to start if you tell yourself you only HAVE to do 10 minutes. Good luck!

Go get em Bill! You can do it! :cheer2: :goodvibes :cheer2:

OK... did my longest run ever today! I ran 7 miles, average pace was right at 11:00. I was so worried, I had only run up to 10K distances. DH was so sweet. I text him when I start and finish a run and he called me later to tell me how proud he was of me. It made me feel good. He is really my only running supporter in life, with the exception of you guys. :grouphug: Next week I up it to 8 miles and I'm sure I'll be scared all over again. :lmao:

This was the first time I took something with me to eat. Half way I ate five of those sport beans and at first I thought for sure they were gonna make me sick. They are so sweet! But, I drank my water and I don't know if it was a mental thing or not, but I felt better the second half... :confused3

So my knees are hurting right now. Is that a bad sign or just because I'm increasing my miles?

Also, got a shoe question. Once I got my current shoes my foot problems stopped, but now my right foot is hurting. I've put 113 miles on these shoes and I have a half marathon end of March. Think I'll need a new pair before then? I'd greatly appreciate the advice!

Thanks guys! (And oh - Team Herc's Heroes is gonna rock all of you out! :rockband: )

Shan - Congrats on th LR!!! That worry before is what makes it so great when you finish! As fro shoes, the rule of thumbs I use are 6 months or whenever you get a new hurt. I'd say try new shoes first. I always get about 6 months frm my ASICs. However, only got 4 months from my Mizunos. Dh got less time wiht those too.

Hi Everyone!

Started the day by going to an Academic Awards Ceremony for dd11. I have been beaming all day! :goodvibes She has struggled so hard for years and I guess I just never thought I would see this day. Oh I am gonna cry again! :goodvibes Now if I can get her to start running....

Bill - GET OUT THERE! I think the 10 minute rule might be a good start. Most of the time its just a matter of starting. Once moving you are ok.

Or you could do like I did when I first started, I would reward myself for exercising with a cream puff. Nothing else worked. Even now, I occasionally swing by the bakery after a particularly miserable work out.

The problem is that it is cold and miserable outside. Even on sunny days its a little depressing. The weather makes everyone want to curl up and hibernate. Well, hibernate with a plate of brownies anyway.

Shan! - Way to GO!
I used to call my dh after every run too. Now I only call him after the really rotten or really good runs.

Do your knees hurt or ache? Achy knees after a long run is fairly normal - take an epsom slat bath and that should help. Go back and reread the chapter on injury in MFM. He has some good guidelines. As for the shoes, that depends on your training plan. I would mark your calendar for March 10th and look at your miles then. If you need new shoes, that is the latest I would get them. I rarely get more than about 350 miles on a pair of shoes but I am tough on shoes. I run too much to take chances once I notice the support is waning.

Angie - you won't believe the things that count as XT.....
