Let's see some shots you've taken of wild animals actually in the wild - not your dog, not at the zoo, not even at the AK.

Wow, Mark ... those are some pretty spectacular pics, you've got there!
They're all great, but I *really* love the 1st coyote ... it would be perfectly at home in my favorite magazine; National Geographic! While the others are good looking pics, that one seems to have just a little something 'extra', to capture the 'personality' of the coyote! :thumbsup2

Not as good as Mark's, and a few of his are from my neck of the woods so I have no excuses.

Oh wow, I can't compete with any of these but here's a couple anyway.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b310/virgo10/Old%20Scanned%20All%20Types/reraccoonfamily95450x305.jpg
A family of raccoons outside our back door. This was taken through the glass (for obvious reasons) and was when I lived in MA.

Another pic from MA. This Carolina Wren was hanging upside down from a branch on a cold winter's day. I thought the poor thing was dead but, no, he was just hanging around. :rotfl:

I hope this counts, it is a wild animal that I shot at the zoo, but he wasn't a zoo animal, he was a freeloader!

It's not a competition. I've got a bunch of wildlife shots to choose from because I've been taking pictures for a long time and I spent a lot of time in wilderness areas.
Not as good as Mark's, and a few of his are from my neck of the woods so I have no excuses.

I'd love to have a shot like your second one. It makes my bald eagle shot look totally lame.
They're all great, but I *really* love the 1st coyote ... it would be perfectly at home in my favorite magazine; National Geographic! While the others are good looking pics, that one seems to have just a little something 'extra', to capture the 'personality' of the coyote!
Believe it or not, I took that shot from my parent's kitchen window. They sometimes have a coyote that prowls around near the house looking for scraps. The second elk shot was in the field across the street from them and the hummingbird was from the backyard. They live up in the mountains, just across the street from Rocky Mountain National Park. Here's a shot of their house in winter time:

Ok mine aren't quite as exotic as some of the animals on here but still!
One that's not for the faint-hearted, a nest of baby spiders in my sister's back yard:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v497/HeathenAngel/DIS/Photo%20Board/Spiders.jpg
These guys were trying to run up the waterfall as they had a little one with them who couldn't fly. Took them a while and they drew a small crowd but they managed eventually and got a big cheer!

I love everyone's photos! Wildlife seems to avoid melike the plague(I'm the only one I know that drove the length of Moose Alley at 20-mph at dusk and didn't see a single moose) but I did catch some wildlife in the Everglades in 2001- these were taken with my N80- film slr so they are scans.

I did see these bears in NH- on Cannon Mt. Spotted 3 black specks while driving by on the highway- stopped to check it out. We were quite far from them- taken with a 300mm lens with the N80.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/SusieW/Scan1240434June102005.jpg
And this little guy I saw in Stanley Park(Vancouver) last fall. A bunch of signs saying please don't feed the animals- they have to be destroyed if the get to be a nuisance. Of course, some people just can't obey the signs:( I hope he/she will be ok.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/SusieW/IMG_0210.jpg
And this guy on top of one of the Mts in N Vancouver. Of 7 days in BC- 4 of them hiking in the mts near Whistler and in NVancouver- we saw 2 sea lions, a few of these grey jays and the raccoon. Not much for a place loaded with wildlife. Its almost like wildlife runs the other way when they know I'm near:confused3

Here's a Cardinal I was able to get a pic of last year. He moved around way to quick to get a lot of shots. I think I got 2. This one is cropped. Taken with my 70-300mm lens at the 300mm end.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e234/handicap18/Misc%20Photo%20Gallery/DSC_5385croped.jpg
I also got a few of some Blue Jays feeding from a bird house in our front yard:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1183/698198237_d37d02225c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/handicap18/698198237/)
I read an article in a photo mag last year about getting great up-close shots of squirrels. I tried it a few times last year, but got nothing. I'm definately going to try it out again starting in the spring.
Use peanuts as "bait". Set up your camera on a tripod with the camera facing the peanuts. Put the camera a few feet away then set your camera to remote shutter. Step back far enough so you can see everything, but you wont scare off the squirrel, but close enough so your remote will work. When the squirrel starts eating the peaunts, use your remote shutter to take a few pics before he runs off from the sound of the shutter going off. Wait for him to come back and do it again. Could make for some great shots. Worth a try if you've got some extra time and things are quiet.

That's a writing spider. We usually see several of them around the house during the summer. Here's one.

I'm not very knowledgeable about spiders and I still haven't found out what this one is. The colors are beautiful though.

Another unknown but we call them Grinch spiders because of the green face looking thing on their back.

Yup, all of the above. :rotfl:
The largest orb weaver in our gardens is the black and yellow argiope (Argiope aurantia). Actually, only the female is large, the males being much smaller by comparison. Although big enough to deliver a bite, these spiders are not poisonous or aggressive. The black and yellow argiope is also called banana spider, yellow garden spider, zipper spider, golden orb weaver and writing spider.

This is from last winter. I think it is a ladderback woodpecker (sorry Andy for not answering your question about what type of bird this was a while back). I took a few of a cardinal in the snow covered pine trees outside my office window yesterday, but don't have it uploaded yet. So much to do, so little time!
Geez! It's about time I got an answer to that one! :lmao:

Wow! Great shots! :worship: What lens do you use with the 20D? I see focal lengths of 430mm, etc. I am looking for a lens that will give me this type of closeup photography of birds.
Thanks Andy, I was using Canon's 300 f/4 IS lens with Canons 1.4 II extender, I'm now looking at getting Canon's 400mm f/5.6 lens. Here's a few more some with the extender and some without, also most of these have been cropped but still make nice 5x7 or 4x6 prints. I also like to use it to shoot Butterflies and Dragonflies because it has a mim focous distance of just under 5 feet.
Here's a link to the Canon forums of pics others have shot with the 300mm f/4 lens.

Sorry, ladderbacks live out in the southwest. That one is likely a red-bellied woodpecker. Yes, I know its crown is red but the red-headed woodpecker has a full red head (and is rarely seen).

second the red bellied, think the redheaded doesn't have the striped back and the others ( ie downy) don't have that much red on the head...
i gotta go through my photos and see which i haven't posted so as not to bore everyone;) but i love all of yours so far

Could be. I really am not sure what it is. For some reason, I remember some discussion about ladderbacks somewhere with somebody.... Ok, I don't know what I am talking about. I just take the pictures.

How about "a pretty woodpecker"? I know I haven't seen one like that in Massachusetts. Seems like if it is a red bellied, they should be here, but I haven't seen one anyways. Always see the smaller ones.
