Unfortunately not all of us have the best cameras, and even fewer of us are great photographers (although there are some incredible photographers on these boards), so sometimes, in order to get a special picture, we need to do some tweeking to it. I thought it might be fun to have a place to show what you can do with a picture, to make it come out looking a lot better. So what I want to do is post two photos in every post (if possible). First of all, show the photo in it's original state, and secondly, show the photo after you've fixed it up, or changed it all around. I hope this catches on, because some of the best shots I've seen were shots that were doctored up a bit.
Anway, I'll start with a shot of the castle:

first shot (pretty boring):
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/castle03.jpg

fixed up shot (a lot more unique):
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/castle03-1.jpg

BTW, I made the changes on a program called Photo Explosion SE.

Anyone else?

Here's another example:

photo 1 - regular shot of a bird at EPCOT:

photo 2 - spiced up shot of same bird:

Anybody else have any edited shots?

Sometimes, all that it takes to change a picture for the better is a frame, and perhaps a little background. For example:

photo 1 - not too exciting:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/boat01.jpg

photo 2 - quite a bit better:

Here's another fun way to edit your pictures to make them more enjoyable - collages:

photo 1 and 2:

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/barnstorm02.jpg

photo 1 and 2 as a collage:

Plus, adding descriptions or captions can help too.

What photo software do you use?

Actually, I'm using 2 different programs:
Photo Explosion SE for all my editing
and
Print Artist Gold 21 for my collages.

The funny thing is that I got both of them (and a scrapbooking program) in a 3-in-1 package at a yardsale for .50 cents. :thumbsup2

Here's one that I put together last night. I'm using two average photos, a background, and some special lettering to make a really neat photo.

Thanks everyone, these are some really great photos. I hope more people start posting as well, to keep this thread going.

Renee1061 - Is that the Sepia look? It's amazing how it makes it look so much more authentic.

Joe - I love the difference the heightened color makes in your first two shots, and that last shot of the HM is just awesome!

One Year Pin - I really like the look of the the B&W, it gives the shot so much more personality.

Mouselovenfamily - That is another incredible shot of the HM. It's too bad that You and Joe couldn't get your pictures into the hands of the people at Disney. They both would make great promotional shots.

Keep them coming.

Sometimes you take a picture, and it comes out really bad. At this point there are two choices, either delete it, or do something different to it. Here is my example of this.

It's not just you. I am pretty computer savvy with most software and other things when it comes to the computer but for some reason, Photoshop is so hard and unfriendly to use that I just don't get it. Now I do have an older version so maybe the newer ones are easier to use. But I doubt I would spend money on a newer one version since I can't figure out the one that I have.

The only thing that would make that look cooler (which it already is really good) is if you had gotten a shot of the mansion right before a major storm. The bright blue sky takes away from the haunted aspect of the series.

I guess that just means you will have to make another trip just for that 1 stormy shot :rotfl: ;)

For those having problems, go check out photshop books by scott kelby. He has some for PS Elements and the full blown version. I originally tried the full blown version of Photoshop with no guides and hated it. I then got the guide and Photoshop elements- night and day difference. Elements has a lot of user friendly tools and his guides give you step by step directions to some amazing effects.

Last night I was fooling around with Photo Explosion, and I came across a feature I hadn't seen before. So my picture of the day uses this new feature:

I got PhotoExplosion yesterday but can't figure out how to do some of these things!

Ex. - turn only some of the photo B&W or merge two photos together :confused3

Guess I'll be doing A LOT of reading and playing tonight.

I love these photos!

As far as I can tell, Photo Explosion doesn't allow you to turn some of the photo B&W, and some of it color (at least I haven't been able to find that ability), but if you want to merge two photo's (like I did with my daughter and Aurura), click one "edit", then "selection", then "trace". After clicking "trace", put the pointer where you want to start tracing, and hold down the mouse button. That will allow you to start tracing the outline of what you want to copy (again, it takes some practice to get the hang of it). Make a full circle (or whatever design you've traced, but try to get back to your starting point), then double click. The area you traced will now be highlighted by dotted lines. Inside that area, right click, and you'll get some new options. Click on the option "convert to object". Now you have the object you outlined, in your control. You can put it wherever you want. After deciding where you want to put it, right click on it, and you will get some more options. This time click on "merge", and the object will be merged to where it is.
Try experimenting with this, and you'll find that pretty quickly you'll be doing some really neat things. I figured out how to do this last night, and within a half hour, I was replacing faces of people, and other neat things.
The other features of Photo Explosion are a whole lot easier to use, just simply click on the pull down menu, and you should be good to go.

BTW, there are a few other advanced features under selection that also allow you to copy, trace and other things. The only one that I really can't figure out, is "by color". I know how to copy things with it, but I just can't figure out what to do with the ghost images that you get. If you figure it out, I would love to learn what you know.

Another example of high dynamic range - this time cropped a little and used the high contrast mode to make the photo a little more interesting...

Thanks for the tips. I will try it. The Photoexplosion box shows a photo in B&W and with just some coloring on it, so I'll have to play more. Box claims how easy it is to do this stuff - dunno know about that.

Joe - it's amazes me how much more images in a photo stand out with the editing - the muppet fountain is a good example; the after photo looks great.

OK, I figured out how to do part color, part B&W (or any other effect you might want to add).

first of all here's my photo:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/autowoody01color.jpg

Basically what you do, to get part color on Photo Explosion (I imagine it's probably similar to other programs), is first of all select your photo. Then click on "edit", then click on the "selection" tab. At this point there are 4 different options (I've only got the hang of one so far). I chose the "trace" option. Carefully trace the item that you want to keep in color (it might help to zoom in on the object). Once you've completely traced it, double click on it, and it'll become surrounded by an outline of dotted lines. Now, on the left side, click on the box to invert the selected area. After you do that, click on the "effect" menu near the top. This will give you a bunch of options of changing your picture. Click on the "artist" choice, and the "tint". Pick the color you want to change the picture to (for example, B&W), and click on that. If you do all that, then your picture should do what you want, and give you a combined color \ B&W image. Try it out, and see if it works.

Also, don't forget, when you've got the picture you want, to right click inside the colored area, and then click on "Merge", to make sure that it makes the change.

Is this done with layering?? I can't seem to figure that out at all.

TheGoofster
01-31-2008, 09:47 PM
Actually, all I'm doing in these photos is tracing the object I want to keep the same, and then basically "freezing" it in place, thus ignoring any other changes made to the surrounding picture.
So no matter what changes I make to the original photo (B&W, warp, puzzle box... {these are some of the changes that the software offers}), my traced image is not going to change. This gives it the look of being superimposed or even layered, but it's really a whole lot simpler than that.
I've also been experimenting with cutting that traced object out, and pasting it in other pictures. For exmample:

photo 1 - my daughter and woody again.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/autowoody02.jpg

photo 2 - I've added my son to the picture:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/Jessdad/autowoody02josh.jpg

I got my son's picture from another shot. I traced his outline, cut it out of that picture, and pasted it into this one. I had to resize it a bit, but besides that it came out pretty good to go.
Again, once you trace and "freeze your picture (by double clicking on it, so that it's surrounded by dotted lines, you can do almost anything you want around it, and it won't change.

Thanks Joe. Unfortunately most of my pictures need quite a bit of help to look good. My camera is a very basic early model digital one, and the only photography course I've ever had was one class back in college over 20 years ago. I'm hoping to start saving up for a nice DSLR in a couple of years, but until then I think I'll be busy editing away most of my shots.
Most of your shots are great just as they are. I really appreciate the quality of what you post (sure it makes most of us realize just how little we know about photography), but they sure are fun to look at. :thumbsup2

When you first walk into the Magic Kingdom, on the right side (I think it's called Town Hall). Walk into the building, and then keep going all the way through to the back. There is a whole section that not too many people seem to know about (I learned of it here on the DIS). There are 4 or 5 cutout scenes, plus a stage or two, where I think they have shows (we didn't catch any of the shows, so I'm not sure what they are about). It was a really nice, quite, relaxing place to catch your breath. There are even a couple of tables back there where you can eat in peace too.

Thanks Kelsey... I don't use Photoshop. I've never really even looked into it to be honest.

There are four editors that I use depending upon what I need to do:

Faststone Image Viewer (http://www.faststone.org/) (free) - I like this one for resizing and cropping mainly

Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) (free) - I like some of the simple editing techniques that really just require a push of a button or dragging a slider

Dynamic-Photo HDR (http://www.mediachance.com/hdri/index.html) - ($39.00) I use this one when I want to create an HDR (or HDR like) image, but I also use it for "tone mapping" fairly regularly

Noise Ninja (http://www.picturecode.com/purchase.php) ($34.95) - I use Noise Ninja to automatically eliminate "noise" or "grain" from the high ISO pictures

Joe , How easy or hard to use is the above program ? I really like the effects you have gotten with it ( they are very cool) and I would like to give it a try. I have Photoshop CS2 and I do ok with it and of course I have and love Picassa, it doesn't get any easier than that :)

It's really not bad Nichole. The reason I haven't gotten into Photoshop is because it looks too complicated... well, that and the cost. I tried the trial version of Dynamic-Photo HDR, and purchased it 1/2 hour later. If you end up purchasing it, read the pdf owner's manual - it clarifies a lot of things. The thing I like about the program is that it will still tone map a single jpeg. Of course, the best results are from multiple jpegs at different exposure compensations. You can also use a single RAW file and adjust the exposure in your RAW editor saving several jpegs. But I don't think it does to bad with a single jpeg if not overdone.

It's a fairly simple program to learn - I'd give it a try...

Photoshop is complicated if you are technically challenged like me :rolleyes1 Dh got it for me and he has helped me with it a lot thankfully. It's stands for High Dynamic Range. I've not tried it myself, but according to Joe, there are some pretty good software packages that let you do some incredible things to photos (again, see some of Joe's results to get an idea of what's possible).

I too, think that ToT is so great when "fixed" like this! The clouds really add to the effect! Nice work 記衷oe!

A while ago, I came across some edited photos that I thought were really neat, so I decided to try and do the same kind of thing. I quickly found out that the program I was using (Photo Explosion), doesn't allow an easy way of doing it. But nevertheless I kept experimenting with different ideas, until finally I found a way of doing it myself. So here is my first experiment of having a photo come out of its frame:

This tree was so big, that it made the elephant look tiny. So I thought I'd encourage that line of thought:

Too funny. Although, some of my favorite features that I have discovered have also come from just goofing around, when suddenly you discover something totally new and amazing.

Also, Lyzzies mom, I really like that shot you did. :thumbsup2
