I do lap swimming for exercise-hence the user name-so I thought I'd check over here to see if any other DIS'ers are water junkies!

I swim with masters swim team twice a week - would love to do more, but have kids and no childcare when swimming is available. But, I'll be your water junkie!

I'm working up to being able to join our Master's group. I'm still a bit intimidated by it. What's your typical workout look like?

I swim for XT but am not able to manage a long haul. I see a few folks at our gym that seem to go on forever.

Our ortho doc sure loves it when he hears people are swimming for exercise.

That's how I got into it. I tried the Couch to 5k and ended up with tendonitis in my right ankle. Ortho and phys therapist said to swim instead.

I'm a lap swimmer, too. That said, I must confess that most of my workouts lately have not been swimming. Our pool got so hot and so crowded with noodles that I kind of got away from it & just started doing other things. I'm feeling the need to get back in the pool again lately, though, even if I have to go indoors for a while. I really do prefer our outdoor pool because it is 25 meters so I get a good swim in each lap. The indoor pool is much shorter so it's more of push off & turn with a few strokes in between than a good swim.
Smwf71, I'd be interested in hearing about your masters team workout, too. I haven't swam competetively since college, and stopped teaching and coaching when I went back to school for my masters during the summers a few years later.
While I was swimming regularly outdoors I was doing 1000 or 1500 meters of lap swimming, depending on how ambitious I was feeling and how crowded the pool was. I usually split my laps between free & breast stroke so I'm using different muscles.

I've got myself worked up to doing a mile with each workout. As I said-I haven't worked up the nerve to join Master's yet, but I did make up a workout for myself. It's 1700 meters and I can get that done in the morning before work. Since I'm up here in the cold northeast, my only option is the Y pool. If I don't get there at 5:30 am, there's really no other time for lap swimming-which is a real drawback.

Me too! Wrestling left everything a mess, and running everyday finished the rest off.

HI Fitswimmer - I think I can officially post on this thread now. I have been doing lap swim now for the past 4 weeks, and am going to keep it up as long as I can. Luckilly I am off 2 days during the week (T, Th) and my gym has a wonderful pool and babysitting. I'm going to try and add in another day to make it 3x a week.
I am up to 32 laps now, so that's 800 meters. I'm slowly building my endurance and hope to be up over 1000 in the next week or two. I like how you have your program written out, i'm hoping to do something like that. My strongest strokes are Free and Back, and I often throw in a few laps of Breast (no Fly).
What is your program like?

I stick with Freestyle and play with the speed. I have to swim in the morning before work. We often have 3 or 4 people in a lane so I tend to vary the speed of my laps in order to work around them. I'm keeping myself from getting frustrated and working intervals in at the same time!

Last year i swam a lot to rehab my foot after surgery. I built up to swim a 5000m charity swim (i like challenges) and found the best thing in the world for keeping me in the pool was a waterproof ipod case. I got so bored otherwise. Have to admit i haven't swum properly since then but am so impressed when i see real lap swimmers- you guys always look so good!!!!

I am a fairly new lap swimmer. or at least am trying to build up to being one. I presently swim 1,000 yards 3 days a week freestyle and breaststroke and would like to build up more, but right now I have to take an occasional short rest or go slower to rest in the middle of the swim.
