My plan is to do the 5K and then to volunteer for the 15K.

As it gets closer and I find out where I am volunteering I will let you all know!

It will be here before we know it!

I actually am listed twice. I am planning on doing both and I am also listed in the 15k. As of right now I am officially registered just for the 15k but I will be signing both me and DNeice (will be 11 by May) up for the 5k (may possibly talk my sister into signing up as well but not sure on that one)

Thanks for all your hard work doing this Ann.

Wooohooo Jim!!!! I didn't see you during the full :( But we're ever so happy and love our riding medics especially our WISHer Jim!!!! It's just those guys on bikes at the back we're not so happy with LMBO I was very happy to see the medics ride around though it made me feel more comfortable knowing if I needed assistance they were usually within yelling distance. Thanks Jim and friends!!!!

Edited to say.... Come play Kristi!!!! I'll load tons of Goo Goo songs on my phone too if it helps :)

I'm at the same point. My husband said NO (!), and then he asked which days he needed to take off of work, and then today he said we need to remodel the kitchen....

I'm hoping that the fact that this is my ONLY chance to get a Minnie will persuade him....

I'm in too for both races, finally committed myself and mailed in my registration last week. I'm new to the WISH board, but have been lurking for awhile. This will be my first Disney race(s) and am very excited. :yay:

I completed the Philly Distance Run (13.1/ 2:20) last Sept, but since then have been lax due to a chronic back issue, which I am in physical therapy for. I'm not sure I'll be back at 100% by May, so I'm not setting myself up for any other goal except to finish and have a good time.

Any advice for first time Disney runners?

Anyone have any idea what kind of AP rates are usually available for that weekend. DH is giving me a hard time about hotel costs. I don't sleep well at Pop (I've tried it in several different rooms--walls are too thin for this light sleeper).

We love the BC but I'll even go moderate if it means I can go! Any info is appreciated--I can't make the Minnie reservation until I can present a total cost estimate for the weekend.

I'll be there, doing the 15k. DH and I are staying at VWL. We're very excited as this will be our first trip after DH's knee replacement. He's not a runner, but park touring has always be painful. Can't wait for him to be able to enjoy the parks!

AngieTuck, what is wrong with your back? I have chronic back problems and do tons of PT to keep it inline. But never know when it's gonna go. I can completely sympathize with the unknown training success and race commitments.

I would think that there would be some sort of AP rate for that time of year. I didn't do it last year, but for ToT there were hotels with discount rates for that race including CBR for a moderate hotel.

Yes I know exactly what you mean! I'm hoping they'll run some good AP or FL resident specials at SSR like they have been. I have found that resort to be the best place to get a good night's sleep (I'm also a light sleeper).

SSR is primarily a very quiet resort. And, with the specials they have been running over the past year it's been tough to turn them down. The specials we've gotten have been for a studio and we have gotten upgraded to a 1 bedroom villa everytime which was awesome but I'd be fine with the studio too. I like having the kitchen or even the kitchenette option.

Last year we got a very good AP/FL resident rate at AKL around the same time so I'm thinking if they have those available again then they should have the SSR rates too.

I'm thinking about doing the 5K. I am pretty new to running, have always been a walker so this would be my 2nd 5K actually. My first is in 1 1/2 weeks in my neighborhood. If that goes well I will definitely sign up for at least the 5K Minnie.

I think the tricky part will be getting from SSR to Epcot. Guess I'll have to drive? What time would you leave? ;)

DH is going to do the 5K this year and I am going to cheer him on. I am doing the 15k (already in the list), we are probably going to stay at Music. We are at AKV until the Friday before and then going to move to value to save on points and cash.

Thanks for the feedback, Debra. DH knows how much this means to me, but he's watching the bottom line these days because he has a lot of projects he's hoping to get to. For me, the fact that this is the last Minnie is very persuasive.

He said tonight that we need to get great airfare (which is always dicey) and then a great AP rate OR we have to stay at Pop. I can't do Pop for such a short weekend when getting sleep would be important. Even though it's only a 15k, it's pretty far for me (technically, I did cover that far yesterday when I drove three miles each way to the gym and then did 3.5 miles on the treadmill :rolleyes1 but I don't think I'm allowed to count the driving miles...). SSR looked very quiet (we are considering DVC ownership). I was hoping for an Epcot resort so we could walk through after the race, but DH has made it clear that that is NOT an option. :(

My parents also said tonight they are considering taking a week at their timeshare across the street from DTD so that we can stay for free (and be recruited for scream team, but I won't tell them that yet!).

We're looking at the 5k and the 15k.

This is going to be fun!

Oh my gosh, Becky. I just noticed your ticker - three months, a week and four days until the Minnie. Really? Wow. That is kind of a kick in the pants, isn't it? For some reason January to May sounds like longer than that, but we are approaching the end of January and the race is the first weekend in May, so there you go! :cool1:

Hi all. This is all so exciting. I'm ready, and even antsy, to get back out and start walking again. (How's that for a change in attitude?) Kids are home today though, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention to our newbies..... If any of you are wanting to do this specifically for the Minnie medal, you must complete the 15K. There is a medal for the 5K finishers, but it is not Minnie. Also, last year the shirt was a cotton t-shirt not a tech shirt. I just want to let everyone know because last year, as a newbie, I was surprised with my medal. I was still pleased since it was my first one, but I though I'd get a Minnie one. I knew it wouldn't be the same as the 15K, but still Minnie. Also, since this is the last year, well..... you know.

There will definately be WISH meets I just don't know when they start to get planned. Maybe one of the more veteran members can jump in on that. I do know that last year there was a meet at Earl of Sandwich on Saturday evening (I think they did that 2 years now) and Sunday night we went to Jellyrolls.

Again maybe some of the more experienced could jump in . :)

There's usually a meet at Earl of Sandwich (DTD) on Sat evening, 4:30ish if I remember right. A bunch of folks did get together for Jellyrolls on Sunday.

A newbie here, today I took the plunge and signed up for the 15K. After reading these boards and posting my fears of being more of a walker than a runner........the support and encouragement on these boards was the push I needed to 'just go for it'. Thanks to all of you, I am adding a day to the front of our vacation so I will be able to take part in the 15K.
We are staying at AKV from Sunday through the next week, but I'm not sure where we will be for Sat. night yet.

My twin DDs and I (who'll be "sweet 16" by then!) are all signed up for the 5K and the Minnie. We'll be at All Star Sports (got the package with the reduced price park passes from Anthony Travel, otherwise we'd probably be at Pop.)

In reality, I suspect they'll do the 5K and hit the parks the rest of the trip while I do the 15K on my own (with my WISH family, of course :thumbsup2 ). With their year-round swimming background, the 15K would be a breeze for them, but they have different priorities -- and Rock n Roller Coaster and Space Mountain trump a 15K any day.

We'll see.

On a related (slightly) topic, I'd like to get them a gift basket or something special since this will be their birthday trip (a bit late -- their birthday is at the end of April -- but close enough), but the Disney Florist is pretty high -- especially times two! Any ideas? I'm thinking something a bit grown up since it's a special birthday.

I have used Anthony Travel several times now and it was a breeze. Last year for MINNIE I had to call and change so many times due to crazy family members who kept changing their mind :) and they were very accomodating and everything went very smoothly. I am like you I would rather not wait and risk missing the good rates.

Their rates always turn out to be very comparable to FL resident rates also.
We are using them again this time for MINNIE!!

I would definitely be interested in doing that.....and if not a stretch, maybe one of those 12-passenger mini-vans. It would be fun and economical.

I've used Anthony Travel for two trips and haven't had any problems. I think others have not had the same experience, though. :confused3

The bottom line for me was... well, the bottom line! I could get my girls discounted 2-day park hoppers (I still have unused days on a park hopper, so I didn't need tickets) and our room for less through Anthony travel than I could through AAA, primarily because AAA wanted to sell me a package that included all 3 of us. (No optionfor tickets for just the two of them.) If things were different (if they already had tickets, or all three of us wanted tickets and dining), I'd have gone with AAA. But in my case, for this particular trip, Anthony Travel worked out cheaper.

I always advise looking for deals everywhere -- like car shopping, though, you need to figure out what you absolutely have to have first, then try to get it for the least amount of money.

Good luck, whatever your decision!

OK, so I'm like.... 80% sure I'm going to take the plunge and sign up.... it can be realy tough for me to get weekends off, but if I leave after work on Saturday I can drive up, run the race and get back by noon if I absolutely had to....

Still haven't pulled the trigger quite yet, though.....

We are using them again this time for MINNIE!!

angie

Thanks for this info Angie....I just booked through them also and it's always a bit nerve wracking going through a new (to me) agency...I'm so glad to see they are reliable with good customer service. The rates just couldn't be beat!

Hi All! Coming out of lurkersville! I've lurked on the WISH boards for some time, and met a handful of you during Marathon Weekend - which was fantastic! I'd love to join you guys! I'm signed up for the Minnie 15K. I'll be in 5/1-5/6, staying at OKW. My DH actually suggested to me signing up, and taking my best friend for a girls weekend, so it's done! She won't be racing, but we're going to have a fantastic weekend!!!

I'm gonna hop over to the weekly thread and see if I can catch up! Thanks again!

OK "Team" - I officially promise that no one will hear me complaining of the heat during the Minnie!

It is sooo cold here right now!!! During the Minnie I will simply think back to this day and the feeling of frostbite after being outside 5 mins to take out the garbage, and be grateful for whatever hot and humid temperature Florida can throw at me!!!

On a related (slightly) topic, I'd like to get them a gift basket or something special since this will be their birthday trip (a bit late -- their birthday is at the end of April -- but close enough), but the Disney Florist is pretty high -- especially times two! Any ideas? I'm thinking something a bit grown up since it's a special birthday.I don't know exactly, but I thought that there was a person off-site that was putting baskets together and was reasonably priced. If our seasoned experts here don't know you might ask on one of the other threads on DISboard. I know sometihng exists. Or, another thought...make up something and ship it to the resort.

If you bought $5 of lottery tickets per day from now until Minnie, that's be about $500. You could get plane fare for less than half of that. SO, consider it a savigns and just come! Yes, I'm sure your accounting brain does not like my find a way to justify brain.

Hi guys! You have me (Stacie) and DH (Matt--postemr) down for the 15K and 5K. My sister, Susan, (Larry's girl) is doing the 5K only. My mom (Bettie) is doing the 5K too! It will be so cool for all of us to do the 5k together. My mom is 64 and this will be her first event! She could totally walk circles around my sister and I though! She is such an energizer bunny! This is Susan's first event and Matt and mine's 2nd 5K...

I am so nervous about the 15K though! I hope my training goes well!

Good luck and happy training to all the other participants!

I will be doing the 5K with my sister, and the 15K alone. Well, I will be surrounded by WISHers. :)

I was a frequent poster here last yr for the 5K in May, but started heavy at the gym and quit posting and running much. I was back on track training, but kept my worn out shoes and increased mileage way too quick, and am recovering from shin splint right now. I should be able to start back this weekend. Look forward to my first longer than 3 mile race!

Not sure where we are staying. Up to AP rates probably.

Susan already has a room booked at Pop and I have to book mine there too since DH (ray) is currently planning on the 15K.

Pat you know we'll all be watching for AP rates and I'd like to point out that in addition to Carrie's $5 a day lotto ticket comparasion you are also a AP holder and it's economically the thing to do to get as much use out of that pass as possible.

Very happy to see you are joining us and amazed at the lengths your going :thumbsup2

Carrie I will need to order another one or 2 WISH tech shirts. I plan on doing both the 5K & 15K although I have to hand over the cash to Disney for the 5K. Also I need to get Cathy a WISH tech shirt as Ray had a horrible time picking her out of the Full crowd in her pretty pink shirt. And if Ray DOES do the 15K he needs to wear our racing colors :thumbsup2

I have to update my own countdown but Susan has how many days till we are all at Disney again :)

BTW we are planning on flying down on the Thursday (5/1?) and flying home Monday (day after race) but on Monday we will be doing either morning or early afternoon. Thursday we should be on property by 11 am I think :cool1:

As far as I know, you need to get your own transportation to either AK or Epcot. I heard that there will be buses at Epcot to take you to AK but nothing else. We will probably spring for a cab from OKW to AK that morning and then use regular Disney transportation for the way back. There are so many people staying at OKW maybe we could hire a minibus instead. I think the finish line spectators should be able to use the regular Disney transportation also. Hope this helps.

Stacie - no, there really is no transportation to the start of the races at all. This event isn't as big as the marathon so the need isn't there. Last year I know some people took cabs together, and several of us carpooled. Angie was staying at the same hotel as me and she was gracious enough to drive Jen and I to the race. By the time the race is over the resort buses should be running so you should be okay to make it back.

This way in advance planning, but does anyone have any suggestions as far as cheering us on... I mean could my family be somewhere around the 1/2 way point and then make the end to see us finish too? Would it just be best for them to come to the finish? I know I'll have all the WISHers screaming, but I'd kinda like to see my Dad along the way and at the finish. Well we are staying at ASMu. There weren't any AAA discounts for a std room, but there was for a preferred room. So we went with the preferred room because even though it is 10/night more, with the discount it actually ended up being $14 less (over 2 nights) than rack rate for std room.

HI everyone,

I'm getting confused here as I've read most of the threads. DH and I and my 4 kids are thinking about WDW and participating with the 15 K MInnie. I thought it was for WOMEN only?? BUt I've seen some men's names listed. I asked this cuz I've never ran a 15K but my marathon runner husband has.

I'd really much rather prefer having my DH running the 15K and I'll run the 5K with my kids.

Please clarify.

Just wanted to jump in regarding the whole guys running this thing isssue....

While the race is mainly for women, they do allow men. I think most of the men running are there to run with and support their female counterpart...I don't know of anyone registering under a female's name...

I'm doing it because my running buddy is and we love racing together, it's supporting a good cause and heck...allows us another weekend in Disney! Not doing it for the time or the medals...just the experience of another race with my favorite person :goodvibes:

SeeDisney, :wave2: So, to summarize..Minnie is a women's event. Only women can win the top prizes in overall and age groups. The goodie bag and the expo are geared towards women. Men can register for the event in their name, particpate, and receive a finisher's medal...the cute Minnie with a bow ::MinnieMo .

Next year, the rumor is that this will become a princess themed women's ONLY 1/2 marathon. In that event, men will NOT be allowed to participate.

I am curious about the people doing the 5K and the 15K. I did both last year, as the courses were different. But this year, the 5K is just the last part of the 15K. So, is it to get the 5K medal, if you didn't previously? :confused3 Just wondering.. :goodvibes Anne

My husband is also doing the Minnie. I thought about signing him up with a woman's name as a joke, but since he is registered on Active.com and they fill in all your info, I just registered under his real name. He can keep his medal, but I'm taking the goodie bag.

SeeDisney, when you click on the link to Register, it tells where the event is held. For the one in March, for instance, it is in the WWoS's parking lot. Apparently, that's the only one they have decided on, yet. The Register link for the DL 1/2 doesn't give any info for the Kids' races. HTH!

Anne, running around World Showcase is quite possibly my most favorite thing, so I'm all for the chance to do it twice on the same weekend! Plus I figure I'd better maximize my racing experience (and medal count) while I'm down there!;)

I just got my flights for May!!!! I love air miles! I'll be arriving Wednesday early afternoon, leaving Tuesday afternoon. I just left Disney, I can't believe I'll be going back so soon!

By the way.....sometimes the men wear the Minnie shirts anyway, as evidenced by the gentleman to the left of my photo in the gray shorts....

No they did not fill up at all last year and I heard they were actually dissappointed with the numbers last year. I have never seen any of the races at Disney max out -- besides Marathon except TOT. But RFTT the last 2 years and MINNIE did not. But they will post it has reached XXX% if it goes over 50% I think.

Count me in - I am bringing my Sister (3rd year for both of us), my son - age 21 - last year he was the cute college guy yelling your times out at the 8 mile marker in front of the Rose and Crown, this year he is running :cool1:
And hopefully my 17 year old niece - she did the race last year with us (with all of us in Minnie skirts and baseball hats) She was completely psyched to go this year too. But then....Senior prom is the same weekend and she has a new "flavor of the week".

Niece is waffling - hmmm, 4 hour dance or 4 days at Disney? Plus the winter formal already had long dress, cool dinner out and a surprise limo, so we don't know how prom would top that one. On one hand we really want her to come with us, on the other hand, we will not force her to go as we don't want to live with pouting and heavy sighs all weekend. Ahh the drama of high school! Stay tuned to see how this turns out. popcorn::

I am the other old broad that Jeanne is talking about. I'm the older and prettier one. Jeanne is the brains behind our getting into this whole race thing. Since we both completed the Mickey this year and have the medals to prove it, I guess it wasn't such a bad idea. Though if you had asked me that around mile 18, I might not have thought it then. We are both walkers.

We need the Minnie medal to go with Mickey. I am also planning to do the 1/2 in 2009.

No they don't let spectators into the parks for these races, it's not at all like the marathon. Which kind of stunk as a runner! The only place you can scream team for the 5k is at Epcot parking lot at start and finish. For 15k you could scream team outside entrance to MGM or on Boardwalk, but other than that, again the start at AK or finish at Epcot.

Hi. Seeing this is my first Minnie, and my first trip to Disney in May, I thought I would pick your brains. :confused3 I wanna order the Original Wish shirt, as opposed to the race ready - with the FL weather in May, is it more wise to go with a tank or a tee? I know part is personal prefernce, and I'm hoping, no wait, I will be more fit, so a "covering" up, won't be as much as an issue. So long story short, I know they are wicking, and look incredibly comfy - but what are your preferences?

thanks much

Me personally I would say a tank. I am from Florida (its already in the 80's) and actually the majority of the running shirts I have are tank style. I only have 2 shirts that are tee style and one is the TOT tech shirt. Today I went out and wore a tank and I would say definately in May the weather will be even hotter.

Hello fellow Minnie Marathon participants :flower3:

I was so thrilled to have met some of you during Marathon Weekend at the Donald. I have to admit, now that I've completed my first 1/2, I completely hooked on this marathon thing :thumbsup2 . In addition, I'm in awe :worship: of the folks who participated and completed the Goofy ~ you are an inspiration to us all.

See you again in a few months ~ Ruth

Hi! Can you add to Larry's Girl (Susan) and Mom (Bettie), DD (or is it DF Dear Dad/Dear Father) (Bob). Susan is my sister and both my parents are doing it!!! My dad is in his 70s! His first 5K Ever!!!

It would be much better if got a cool Minnie Medal instead of a dress medal... :goodvibes

So now you've got me thinking. Is there a separate medal for running both the 5K and the 15K? Like 3 medals? Or just one for each? If there were 3 medals for running 2 races I just might have to sign up for the 5K as well....

Nope. I think there's a bus fromMGM to WWoS, though. Not exactly a quick way to et there, but better than renting a car just for that.

okay-i'm a walker/runner and also do exercise DVD. I have done a couple 5k a few years back. I love disney, and this would be a way to get there...compete in the 15K minnie marathon. So today i go to the gym and run 7 miles to see if I can do it-i was doing 10 min. miles (oh, i'm in my late 40's)
Still how can i justify spending all that money just so I can run at disney...it sounds fun...my kids would hate me for going to disney w/out them

You can do this! The race course is the last part of the marathon course. You get to run through MGM and EPCOT. The medal is so cute with the Mickey ears and Minnie bow. This is the last time for the Minnie Marathon ever. Your kids will not hate you. I have 4 DDs who love WDW, and I went to the Minnie last year for a girl's weekend without them. Were they happy? No, but I bought them some really cool presents and they found it in their hearts to forgive me. :lmao: Join us!

Hello Anne

I am registered for this thing too. I saw that someone's 21 year old son was running so at least I won't be the only male in the field.

Going through some of the info here, particularly Lily's about clothing I have 2 answers I know many of you have often asked about:

1. If the temperature is about 60 I always race in a tank top, but I don't wear a jog bra, sorry, and

2. I find shorts more comfortable than running skirts, not that I've ever worn a skirt of any kind.

So there you are.

Yes, it follows the last 9 of teh marathon, to BW/BD would work. I think you can't get into Epcot 'til it opens at 9. FOrgot that we will be finishing mUCH earlier than marathon. :headache:

I wondering something similar... Would my family ahve time to see us/cheer us at the Beach Club then get to Epcot for the finish??? If they drive??? I don't want to stress them out, but I would like them to see me acutally running during it...

Going to be tough. If tehy were on the stretch before BW, they'd have close to 2 miles. Depending on how fast you are.....

I'm no expert here, but I'd think with far less people doing this event the ability to get from place to place should be pretty quick. Being so early in the morning (6am) there won't even be regular park traffic on the roads yet.

Question for those who have done the Minnie before: How strict are the sweepers? Since the pace requirements are a 15-minute mile instead of a 16-minute one, I might be right on the cusp this time. Do they give you any leeway other than the amount of time it takes the last person to cross the start?

Jeanne,

Linda and I were concerned last year but we somehow discover lost speed walking. I was able to walk both races at 13:30 pace:eek: I see that the last person finished 20 minutes over 15 min pace. I would figure you should be close to 15 min as you can. I figure that they could pull you on the out and back section. You keep a good consistent pace and figure you will be fine.

Do you think they will acutally sweep the 5K???

I beleive it will be like the FFR 5K in Jan. No chip and 15 min pace listed. We did the 5K in Jan with a pace of 17:20 and weren't swept and there were a fair number of people behind us. I think they will sweep people that are 20 + min pace. They will want to close the course in 1 hr. My opinions and some experiences. They just don't want people walking 30 min pace out there. I saw some like that in Jan and knew they would be swept.

Thanks Robert. I'm not too concerned about myself, but family that is doing it with me. My dad really wants to do it. He is 72, has a bad knee, but is trying to walk 3 days a week and increase his pace. He keeps about 16 min pace for 2 miles right now... I'm going to wait a bit longer before I sign us all up, but I guess we'll just see. My thinking is we all do it together so I really don't want any of us to get swept, but I don't want him to have to drop out and us keep going without him either...

I noticed there seemed to be quite a few finishing later in January, but I didn't know if they swept it or not... Didn't the last person finish in like 1hr 20 minutes??? or did I toally make that up? :confused3

Thanks again!

Stacie,

I know the "clock" time was something around an 1:00. I do believe there were a fair sized group behind us and their time might be something around that. If you family can do 16 min pace for 2 miles, they should be fine. They ones that start out at 20 min + pace and slow are the ones swept.
