Executive Function?

First, I just want to say how awestruck I am after reading some of the posts on this board. My DS8 is diagnosed with ADHD, a nonverbal learning disorder and executive function disorder. We will soon be meeting with his team at school to renew his IEP for next year (third grade). I feel the executive function piece is not being adequately addressed. My son has huge problems beginning and staying on task, and has a high degree of frustration due to not being able to get started, but seeing the rest of the class busily working away. He is very smart and is now acting out to authority figures at school who are treating this as a behavioral/motivation problem and not a processing problem. Does anyone know of accomodations I could ask for to address this. Thank you so much!

Here's a site that has given me lots of information (including info about executive function). Another good source is the book Nonverbal Learning Disabilities at School by Pam Tanguay. It's hard to specify which accommodations/interventions would be appropriate for your child. Every child with NLD is slightly different and has different needs. My DS has also been diagnosed with NLD.

Executive function, along with working memory and attention is an important part of how our brains process information. Problems with executive function are very common with ADHD. It involves getting started and finishing work, remembering homework. memorizing facts, writing essays or reports, math problems, being on time, controlling emotions, completing long-term projects and planning for the future.It's like the condutor's role in the orchestra.

Like Tw1nsmom, I have a son who has been DXed with NLD. I have used NLDline for information and have found the site to be very helpful. Another site that I would like to recommend to you is www.nldontheweb.org . It's a site with a LOT of articles about NLD (including several great ones about accommodations that are appropriate for children with NLD). It also links to an excellent discussion board populated by some of the best NLD moms (and dads) in the world -- and quite a few adults who have NLD and have "made it" so to speak. I have found so much support and information on this site; I don't know what I'd do without it.
