As we start a new post-WDW Marathon Weekend year, many people on the WISH Racing team are not only looking to improve their times in 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, full marathons, ultramarathons and other distances, but are also looking to eat healthy and, if possible, drop a few (or more) pounds.

In the spirit of the WISH team, I have started this new thread for the new "racing" year as a place to lend support to one another, exchange advice, seek solace and provide each other with a helping hand getting back on the horse/on the wagon.

Those of you who know me, know that I have a long road to travel in this regard, and I hope to make it to the finish line for both the sake of myself and my family. (My future marathon finish, although related, is more of a personal challenge.) I hope others join me here and best of luck to all for a happy and healthy WDW Marathon Weekend 2009 year.

I completed my first half this weekend and it has inspired me!! Once my foot heals (I lost a toenail in training and now it is infected) I plan to train for the full next year with two halfs to prepare - maybe the flying pig and the air force marathon in Dayton

the most important thing to me in all of this is to shed extra pounds - 30 would be great, 40 would be awesome and 50 would be perfect! I will join you!!

Next year I don't want to look at my race photos and wonder who that fat girl is!!

I'm here! I have managed to lose 6 lbs in the last 2 and 1/2 weeks! I mention that before I mention I gained 10 lbs since ToT! But I am headed the right direction!

Love the calculator, Vic! I am impressed with how incredibly fast I am! :woohoo:

Wow, Vic! That flyer calculator is interesting. I wish I could put the computed time as my actual time. :teeth:

Bill, I'm right there with you, too! Although I did just complete the marathon, I would really like to get faster and enjoy the experience more. I need to lose 40 pounds before I do another.

As for tips and tricks, I'm all ears. In the past, I have found that small changes are easier at first than by changing a lot on the get go. I tend to burn out too quickly if I push myself too hard in the beginning of any new routine.

j&n'smom - :wizard: for the foot. I have a big 'ol blister the size of Texas on the ball of my right foot. It's driving me crazy! :headache:

Sign me up! I really want to be in much better shape (and lighter on my feet!) even in time for the half marathon I'm doing in May. I was wondering--does anyone use the "Walk off the Pounds" DVDs? How about other exercise DVDs until the weather breaks? I'd love to know how the walkers out there got to such a fast walk?

I'm in.

I ran my first triathlon last spring - until that point I'd never been in a swimming, biking, OR running event! I'd like to do another one this year and I'm looking for an in-line skating marathon to replace the cancelled Disney skate.

Oh...and lose 10 pounds...again.

DH ran the WDW marathon last weekend and wants to sign up again next year. No marathons for me - I have the hips of an 80 year old woman. I only run when I'm 2/3 through a tri!

Sign me up! I am so proud of my Donald medal this year, but I can't look at those pictures... After I saw them, I looked at my pics from the full marathon 2 years ago - I was about 75 pounds lighter - UGH!!! :headache: DH and I are getting back on track, though. :thumbsup2

Vic - thanks for that calculator! That was an eye opener for both of us!

when I was pregnant with my first - I got gestational diabetes - I was able to control it with diet and weighed 25 pounds less two weeks after delivery than I did the day I got pregnant...

it was such a great diet and I was able to eat a lot while losing weight - I am a VERY picky eater

I have tried to do the diet several times but always seem to find an excuse not to do it - I really need to stick to it now -

weight watchers has worked for me in the past but then I find that as soon as I deviate from the plan I gain it back...

I also have started watching Biggest loser - that is pretty motivating to me

Hey Kate - I remember chatting with you a while ago on the t-shirt design threads. :wave2: Congratulations on your race!!! :thumbsup2

I had a major moment last week watching Biggest Loser. It was when Jillian was talking to pink girl (can't remember her name) about why she had gained all the weight, and about working through the emotions. I also did WW before, and lost 132 pounds, and was even a receptionist for a year and a half. I learned how to eat well, but I never dealt with all the "issues", and all the weight came piling back on. Anyway, I am so glad they showed that side of weight loss - not just healthy eating and exercise (which are also essential).

Wow. I wasn't expecting such quick and numerous replies. In that this, for me, is the start (again) of a new way of life, I try to keep in mind that I didn't get as big as I did overnight. I've "worked" at it hard for many years and, as such, I don't expect to be buff overnight either (may be by next January though ;).)

Big Vic--Thanks for the calculator. That truly encourages me. I put in relevant info, adjusted for distance, based on my Tower of Terror race--my only one so far. I am going to have to run the numbers again though because according to the calcultor, I finished before I started:confused3 . If I loose enough weight, I might make it to elite status without even having to train.:thumbsup2

Me too. I'll join you. I'd like to lose 20 lbs by Nov, my next half marathon. Unfortunately I won't be back to the Disney Marathon until 2010 because of scheduling. I'm hoping 2010 will be the year of the full marathon, but I realize it will be a lot easier on my body if I lose the weight.

Big Vic -- Great calculator. I've heard so many folks say that simply by losing weight you can improve your time. Wish I knew how much of the improvement from the calculator was based on weight and not age -- Oh! I could plug in my age as 25 and see that, couldn't I? :upsidedow

For those of you who don't know me, I am on high blood pressure meds and have been warned about my climbing blood sugar. I lost 23 pounds recently and got my bloood sugar just inside the "normal" zone, but I'm still at least 60 pounds overweight (and I'm talking "normal" weight -- not Twiggy weight).

I'd love to be held accountable here -- and to post my progress while encouraging others.

Hello everyone. This weekend I plan on trying to eat smart. With all the kids' activities, meals are/will be on the run. Just back from DS's Pinewood Derby (Den and Pack winner), am about to head off to DD#3's swim meet while DW is with DD#1 at a gymnastics meet. We'll meet up later today for DD#1 and DD#2's 6:00PM basketball game. Tomorrow doesn't look any better.

Hope to get some time this weekend to calculate my nutritionl goals. I am thinking shooting for between 2200 and 2500 calories per day with about 20% complex carbs, 40% protein and 40% fats.

Wendy, my system has gone crazy after all my surgeries on the hips. I am also dealing with, among other things, high blood pressure and a few weeks ago for the first time my blood sugar was off the charts. I have tried to clean up the eating some and the last blood test was close to normal, but given everything else going on, my doc is closely monitoring. I am hoping for improvement when I next see him in 3 months and big improvements over the next year.

Eat smart everyone and exercise strong.

Thanks, Bill, for starting this thread. And Vic, I loved the calculator! To everyone else, yeah! "We're All in This Together..."

A little background on me...a couple of years ago, I lost 50+ pounds after seeing myself in a family-reunion photograph and thinking, "Really??" No magic diets, no pills, just the old-fashioned method of a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and swearing. Oh, yeah, and I gave up my 2 Mountain Dews a day addiction.

Since then, I've been able to keep physically active, but fell off the wagon on the food intake. Or maybe you should say I climbed back onto the food (chuck) wagon. I've put 10-12 pounds back on, and they don't sit comfortably with me & my new clothes. I didn't really stick to my food plan in 2007 for various reasons I've talked about in other threads, the most important being I trained for & completed the Goofy! :yay:

I'm now hooked on this exercise thing, and would like to transition from a WR program to R for next year's marathon weekend and maybe a few races in between. Meanwhile, I'd like to drop this weight, work on my core issues (and any other issues I may have), and just get healthier in general. I've returned to my long-dormant SparkPeople account, and they're recommending a caloric range of 1200-1550 day. I'm also hoping to do cardio 5x/week and strength training 3x/week. If given an opportunity, though, I'll find an excuse to exceed the first category, shirk the second, and ignore the third altogether. (Crunches, lunges, and squats--oh my! :scared1:)

But I know I need even more help, that's where you all come in. I'm in need of support, encouragement, and more-than-occasional nagging! Thanks for being here, and I hope to give as much to you all as I receive!

Good luck on a new week, everyone!

Lynda that was Bette Sue - yes I'm hooked, and its a great visual when I go to the gym, and dont think I can do just one more.... or 5 more minutes.... the nice thing is I dont weigh enough to qualify for Biggest Loser - but it just feels like it!! I will settle for 20# - but I have an addiction to food... I really enjoy it... I think of food all the time... for me I know its also emotional, and I know I should deal with some of those issues (when I did I was able to keep off the weight, so now I think its just too much food and too little confidence in myself... I'm hoping the races will boost my confidence...)

I'm also on the wish weight loss thread Fast Pass to Thin - we encourage people to drop in and just belong - we had a Dis Meet in Sept this past year - we try to be accountable, and challenge each other...

Accountability is we post a weight loss or gain (not your starting weight) on Fridays...

Challenges - drink water, or 50 situps... or for me I was training and asked others to join me!! (some gave me their phone numbers so I could call on them!!)http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1273475&page=1539

I know on other threads I often want to jump in on my weight issues, so thanks for starting the thread!!

I'm ready to start back on track tomorrow. I managed to get rid of a bunch of junk and load up on much healthier eating options. Rather than going hard core and then quitting again after a short time, I plan to work on eating healthier and getting in some sort of exercise in several times a week.

Looking forward to "loosing" with all of you!!!!!!:goodvibes

Hi Lynnda and Sandy!!

I am so ready to start but my lungs did not like the leap from the warm Florida weather to the Cold Ohio Winter...why exactly was I complaining when it was only 65 in Florida?

Yesterday I had chest x-rays the doctor was relieved but surprised that I ONLY have bronchitis and not pneumonia...so I figure I am out of the exercising circuit until Feb. 1 when I will begin my training for my next half...

My hubby and I are going to do the Flying Pig Half marathon which is on May 4 - my goal is to lose 20 pounds in my training...then I will train for the Air Force Half Marathon in September with another goal of 20 pounds for that training period and then lose 10 more as I train for either the Disney half or full...depending on my in-laws and if they decide to go with us...

Good Morning:

Well, the weekend went pretty good, considering I did not expect it to be perfect. Made, I think, some good choices, and I avoided any major pig outs, binges.

This week, I plan on eating "cleaner." I am not a nutritionist or dietician, but to me this means trying to eat primarily good/complex carbs, including increasing my normal vegetable intake, try to minimize refined carbs (sugar and "enriched" flours), avoid hydrogynated oils (processed foods) and reduce saturated fat consumption (but, hey, a man's got to have his red meat). My theory is the key is shopping around the outside of the grocery store (produce, meats, seafood and diary) and minimize the processed stuff in the aisles.

For now I am also thinking of eating "clean" at least during the week and just smart/controlled on weekends. In time, I'll try to do it always, barring special occassions, like WDW.

Another thing is that to make this a life style change, I do not intend to deprive myself of things I really like on occassion. The key will be teaching myself moderation and control.

Today I broke (I mean tipped) the scale at 400+ lbs. Goal number one -- get my weight to start with a "3".

Steffwalks
01-21-2008, 10:31 AM
You are right on with assessment of eating clean, Bill. It also includes roasted, broiled, steamed and grilled! If you can lay your hands on it, resonably priced, bison would be a great choice for your red meat! It is the lowest in fat of anything!

For your fruits and veggies, make sure you have red, green, yellow, and orange, every week! It's more interesting and better nutrition!

And do be sure and treat yourself! That keeps the deprivation thing from attacking you! And if you find a reasonably tasty alternative, don't be afraid to use it. I love "diet" fudgesicles in summer. They are only 70 calories and feel absolutely sinful!

I am still avoiding white foods. I am moving and preparing my training schedule. I WILL lose 10 lbs by April 27! I promise me! (teehee). I have decided to try and train for a marathon and see if it's even doable.

I am swimming along nicely! :fish:

Sandy321
01-21-2008, 10:53 AM
Today's goals:

1. Drink the water, drink the water, drink the water
2. Move 45 min - either by video, or at the gym
3. Minimize snacks - use fruits and veggies as snack.
4. Grocery List - include whole wheat items, like wasi crackers, pasta, soup

One step at a time. Thank you Bill for working on your goals, and pushing me to be realistic, and not stick my head in the sand! I am overwhelmed with my number, and I have to work on 2#s a week... I cant get beyond that yet!

Whoo-hoo, everyone! It sounds like we're off to a great start. I went to the gym today and it was sooo crowded because of the MLK, Jr. holiday. Looks like all the resolutioners are still at it in my area--that's good, because I get motivated by others' progress. One of the things I like about this thread it that we're all working on other goals beyond weight loss: lifestyle changes, eating cleaner, the next race, faster times, improving our general health, and building community. It's these kinds of things that will help us achieve our goals in the long run (sorry, couldn't resist the pun).

I love your goals, Sandy, and your #1 is always my number one. I have a hard time with that, for whatever reason. (Okay, I know the reason, I prefer soda & coffee.) I love that both you, Bill, and Minnie are helping me be focus on moderation and realistic goals. I'll have to check out the other thread.

Bill I love your self-assessment. Good for you for making good choices & focusing on lifestyle changes. I also like the idea of eating clean--it's another mantra I can adopt, I think. (For exercise, I use "Man up." As in "Shut Up and Man Up, Debra!) I think the 2 pounds = 2 seconds Cindy provided will help too, although I might have to lose my entire self to set a respectable time! :rotfl: Steff, I'm also trying to avoid white foods. But boy, do I love that rice and potatoes, not to mention ice cream. Maybe I'll try that fudgesicle.

Like you Beth, I'm trying to re-reach my goal weight, but I'm impressed that you've already scheduled another half-marathon. I'm working on becoming a runner, so it'll be good to keep up to date with news of your races. Julia & Nicks Mom--that's a great plan, interspersing weight-loss with your races as motivation. You made me laugh out loud when you said your plans will depend on your ILs. That's so true, isn't it? My ILs came with us for the Disney Marathon weekend, and everything was thrown off-kilter (which we didn't even get to see).

As for myself, I stepped on the scale this morning and it said I was down 3 pounds from last Monday. Now I know that that loss wasn't even remotely possible, so I can only assume that my weight was fluctuating quite a bit after the Goofy, that I weighed myself at two different times of the day (which I did), etc. I have no real sense of any progress I made, or did not make, this last week.

Anyway, I did the next best thing. I pulled out that sheet of paper from January 2006, when I was just going into maintenance mode--and that quite a few pounds less than I am now. I kept the record to help remind me where I want to be, where i feel most comfortable. It's been too long since I looked at it, which is too bad because it not only lists my goal weight, but the record of how long it took to get there, & my body measurements. Then I pulled out the tape measure. As you might guess....:rolleyes1

So I'm glad a have a bunch of different instruments by which to assess my progress--my weight and measurements, of course, but also my running program, dietary choices, and those precious Disney medals! :thumbsup2

Weight loss is difficult, plain and simple. We all have different methods to get that done, but boy is it hard!!! I admire everyone here, that they have the desire to improve their lives.

I follow a low carb plan. I started my weight loss in May 2005 with a weight loss physician. I went from 231 pounds to 160 pounds. I will NEVER be a thin/skinny body, but 160 was a good weight for me. My goal has always been 150, but really had a hard time getting there.

The year 2007 was my marathon training year. Marathon training is not possible on a low carb diet (I found out the hard way). So I increased my carb intake and in the process of training, went up to 187 pounds. Now, I am in the endeavor to lose again! I want to be a 150, but will settle for 160!!!

I have been eating well (40g carbs a day) and have lost 6 pounds since Jan 1st. I have more energy, and able to run without feeling like crap! It's all good! Low carb always makes me feel great. I will continue to low carb even through 1/2 marathon training. I can live with that.....it's when I was running 14 to 20 miles at a time that low carb interferes.

My next 1/2 marathon is in Lehigh Valley (Allentown PA) hosted by Runner's World. I would like to PR that one, since it was my first 1/2 marathon in 2006.

And with all that, she flies like the wind....AND even did the Dopey this year!

Wendy, I have seen you and 60 pounds sounds like a bit much, but I certainly hear you, girl. I think you and I must both be cursed with a totally
crappy metabolism. According to the charts, I am well within the obese range. Losing about 30 pounds will put me in the merely overweight category. I try and I try, but nothing seems to work. Very frustrating when I know I am out there working my butt off.

Creativebeth
01-21-2008, 01:54 PM
My low carb is 10g carbs per meal (if you don't use them, you lose them) and a snack for 10g carbs per day.

I am told that this is somewhere between Atkins (20g a day) and South Beach (which is alot more).

Beth

Beth--Those look like the numbers/carbs breakdown suggested in Protien Power.

One thing for those thinking about the low/controlled carb route, when calculating carbs, fiber is deducted by some from the carb count. The reason is that the purpose of reducing carbs is to not trigger an insulin response, as insulin helps to quickly store carbs as fat. Fiber is not "digested" and, as such, does not trigger an insulin response. Thus, it is not counted as part of the carb intake.

About 3 years ago I was a South Beach devotee. I lost a lot of weight and felt great! Then I injured my back and my eating/exercising went out the window and I gained everything I lost back plus some.

It's a great program. The problem is turning it into a WOL instead of just another diet... Something I'm obviously not very good at :guilty:

Good answer Beth! So, now my question is: Do you count the carbs in fruits and vegetables? How about legumes, corn, peas, and other starchy vegetables or do you just count "grain" foods?

Good afternoon "Lean Meaners!"

I made it out to the patio/gym this afternoon. Haven't slung iron in quite a while, so I took it easy, dropped the poundage, and reintroduced myself to the process. The plan is to stay consistent with this, and running.

I believe my feet have healed up enough to allow me to run tomorrow.

Been cleaning up the diet also. This is my biggest problem as I do pretty good during the week and then blow it on the weekends. Guess we'll need to work on that too.

Y'all take care and keep up the great work!

Maria-

I'm right there with you. I did laundry this morning and thought about the cold and thought, hey, it's frigid outside, I could just do the pilates... and then I saw all the WISHers here getting it done, and I didn't want to get kicked off the team my first week! So I went to the gym and told myself only half an hour... then I got there and did 50 minutes--but only 2.5 miles (it was my second workout day).

This is a great place to stay motivated!

I'd like to add that it's hard for me sometimes to force myself to exercise because I'm not overweight--it is just too easy to think that that's enough--until I get on the $%^& treadmill and find it hard to go very far or very fast. My grandmother died of heart disease among other things--a great reminder that it doesn't matter what shape the body is if the heart isn't in good shape! A big thank you to all here who are so supportive in my quest to become healthy!

Since I made the really insane decision to go Goofy next year, I am going to need the entire duration to properly prepare. That means more mileage & the occasional back-to-back long runs.

I recovered from last weekend slowly (I think the 4 miles worth of calf cramps did that), but since then I have logged about 37 miles. I did 10.5 yesterday & 9.8 today. I am concentrating on proper hydration, keeping the electrolytes in balance & finding a Marathon strategy that works for me. I'm Hoping to be between 4:30 - 5:00 in a marathon next month. We'll see.

Tomorrow I rest (duh!). I will do some cross training on my bike on Wednesday, a shorter run on Thursday & am running in a 5k race in town on Saturday.

I'm getting to the point where I feel somewhat guilty if I don't get the miles in. That's a Good Thing, right?

I still do not eat very well (Actually, I eat VERY well, just not enough of the good stuff). I'm trying to cut back on meats, & to celebrate this, we went to Outback tonight. Go figure. Also foods with processed sweetener, no sugared drinks, etc., etc. It's actually been MONTHS since I've had a Snickers Bar. I'll warn you - - do NOT come near me with one. Prepare to defend yourself. It Will Not Be Pretty......... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

You folks all keep me going. Every one of you is an inspiration.

P.S. - a REALLY cool thing happened at the JimB. household a couple of days ago. My DW, who likes exercise about as much as a case of Throat Cancer, said to me that maybe she will run in the Family 5K next year. After picking my jaw up off of the floor, I calmly said "that would be really cool, I'll do it with you". Soooo, next week - to the running store to get my chickadee a good pair of running shoes. What you all have done for me may be rubbing off onto her. Neat, huh?

Hey everyone!! Congrats on all the good starts!!!

Okay... so, I am doing pretty well... I have been eating well... and I feel myself "in the zone" You all know what I mean... the place where you don't make the excuse.. you just do it.... so far... that has applied to the eating portion... now I just have to get the exercise part down.... that is where I find so many excuses!! I just have to make the time..... I am out of my house on a general day from 8 am to 11pm.... I have to figure out a way to make sure I get up earlier...UGH... I am sooooo not liking that idea!!! But..> I WILL find a way to make it work!!! Thanks for the inspiration.... :)

GO WISHERS!!!

Steffwalks, Yes I count all my carbs. I do count "net" carbs (after subtracting the fiber count) from all foods. I am carefully eating some fruit, but not much. Mostly 'carb conscious' canned fruit (peaches, pears) in small amounts and fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries). You really can't have alot, but I do get some everyday.

I have to be careful with dairy also. I am using the low carb milk (Carb Countdown) to make hot chocolate once in awhile. I use low carb cottage cheese (usually with the fruit). The brand with the fewest carbs is Friendship brand I found at my local Giant, which is 3 carbs for 1/2 cup.

I use Dreamfields pasta, which is a WONDERFUL low carb pasta. My whole family eats it, b/c it really tastes like regular pasta.

I order great low carb bread and bagels online from www.LoCarbdiner.com which has a whole lot of products other than bread.

I have followed many plans before (Weight Watchers, etc) and low carb has been my savior. I have never been as successful as I have on low carb. I did gain some, but every other time I gained ALL my weight back plus more. I have to defend the plan alot, but on it I feel wonderful! More energy, no mood swings, no sugar highs and lows.......it's all good. It can be a hard WOL sometimes, but I find it easy to go back on after I fallen off the 'wagon'.

I do recognize that it's not the plan for everyone.....my dh can't do it at all, and he didn't feel good on it. I hope everyone the best of luck, which ever plan you decide on!

Thanks, Beth! I appreciate your detailed explanation. When people say, low carb, it can mean anything, these days! And I often find nuggets and gems that I use for me! :daisy:

I do much the same, I avoid simple sugars, white and processed grains and bread, etc. I eat starchy vegetables, vegetables, fruit, and legumes. I find I feel best when I avoid grains. Funny how we all work differently, isn't it? :butterfly

Does anyone else here use fitday to track their carbs and calories? It's free and easy. I've been trying to keep my carbs around 40%, but fitday tracks ALL the carbs, even the ones in black coffee. I was also inspiried by the Biggest Loser and went out and bought their cookbook. I have two serving of whole grain (usually steel cut oatmeal and/or brown rice) and one serving of fruit a day, the rest of my carbs comes from veggies! It's real similar to Phase II of south beach.

I love love love low carb eating. I did low carb (no grains, starchy veggies, or sugar or fruit) for three years and felt great. But needed to modify it a little with my training, plus I was really getting bored. I haven't gained any weight but I haven't lost any weight either, and am really looking forward to losing about 20 pounds!

You guys are so inspiring! Keep up the good work everyone!

Maria and Ms.MightyDuck, I know exactly what you mean by WISH being a strong motivator. I've pretty much been a slug today, using the term rest day pretty liberally. But I thought if I wanted to post something here, I'd better have something to say other than "Um, I thought about working out. Really hard."

So I did my strength training today, plus worked up enough energy to sweep the snow from our sidewalk. (It's strange here in Pittsburgh--no one seems to own shovels, just brooms. They sweep the snow. :confused3) I also went to a restorative yoga class last night, hoping to reduce stress & increase flexibility. It's been years since I practiced, and I didn't want to jump right in. I was so disappointed--the class was disorganized & lower than low key; in a 90-minute class we didn't do one standing pose! I left feeling frustrated and more stressed out than I started--not a good sign! I won't go back to that class, and am now eyeing a Tai Chi class. I've never taken one so don't know what to expect. Has anyone here?

As for food, I realize just how much I have to learn from all of you! I kind of depend, too much I think, in SparkPeople & really just focus on eating more vegetables so that I can, you know, earn that vegetarian label. Then I worry about protein. I should be worried about fats & sugars, too. Thanks for the calculator julia&nick'smom! I've used fitday, Texa, and like it--but keep coming back to Sparkpeople for the community.

So thanks to your wife you're doing Dopey, JimB? I have to say your post made me smile. Hanging out with my DH is what convinced me to try Goofy last year, and I had the time of my life! (Only doing one of them for 2009, but not sure which one.) You sound like you have a great base already. Congratulations--I'll be sure to bring Snickers bars for the scream team!

Speaking of Snickers, I'm still struggling with the food issue. Lots of cravings today, although I'm not sure if it's pure hunger or just a desire to eat what I want to eat. Reading your posts help, though, so keep your progress, encouragement, and suggestions coming!

Hi all! I had been dreading today - I had to go meet my new doctor and have a physical - UGH! However, she is sooooo great!!!! She didn't criticize me and belittle me like my last doc :goodvibes , and she was really excited to hear about my exercise ventures (last doc told me I was too heavy to be doing endurance activities). She was also very interested in doing the Danskin Tri at Disney in May - yea!!! And the best part... since my last time in on Jan 2nd, I've lost 10 pounds!!!! :woohoo:

Kate - Thanks for the links to the diabetic diet. Both of my parents are diabetic, and I think this diet might be a good one for me to look into.

Jim B - Yea for DW doing the 5K!!! :thumbsup2

Kathy - That is a tough schedule, but you can do it! You're worth it!!!

Vic - How did your run go today? I haven't been able to walk, yet (blisters are still healing), but was able to ride my bike.

Sandy - How did you do on those goals yesterday? Thanks for the reminder about the water - I need to go get some now. ;)

As for the low carb diet/WOL, I have found that I feel best on WW Core. I don't necessarily lose as fast, mainly because I don't stop when I am satisfied, but I love the energy I have with only whole grains, no bread, and no processed food. It is really an all-natural approach, encouraging lots of veggies, lean meats, and fruit.

Time to get the baby up from his nap. Keep up the great work ya'll!!! (That was for you, Bill) ;)

Oh thank goodness you are all here :worship: :worship: :worship:

I just about raided the darn vending machine but came here first. You stopped me from almost ruining my 2nd day on plan. Thank you thank you thank you :worship:

I grabbed a diet soda (water is nasty here) and will survive until I can get home for a decent snack before dinner.

Yesterdays menu:
B - baked apple oatmeal w/yogurt
L - lean cusine panini (need to work on this)
D - lean pork roast, mixed summer veggies
S - sf pudding

Todays menu is same as appove so far. Dinner is questionable but it will be on plan!!!!

Thanks again everyone!

Vic - How did your run go today? I haven't been able to walk, yet (blisters are still healing), but was able to ride my bike.

Lynnda - Got two miles in on the TM. I could definitely feel my owies on the bottom of my feet, but was able to run without much problem. I'll run again on Thursday, and be out at a 5K on Saturday.

Hope your blisters heal up fast so you can get back to walking. Glad to hear you were able to ride your bike. :thumbsup2

All - Keep up the great work! :thumbsup2

Hi friends! Just a note to say thanks to all of you. Since I've been on this board and thread, I seem to have found a new "groove" in which I'm coming home from work, exercising, and eating a point-calculated dinner. I've also been able to lay off the snacks at work. I'm much more inspired! Today was my 4th full day of no cheating and sticking to my 20 points (I'm doing WW Fast Track for 2 weeks). I'm enjoying feeling my legs and arms feel stronger as I do toning and cardio every day. :cool1:
Can't wait for the weather to warm up to get outside now!

because of this post, I let go of the excuses, and got to the gym - I had hoped to get there at dh's lunch time - too many challenges - and I wanted to give in by just doing 30 min of home exercises... but your post made me get my butt in gear - I did 2 miles on the treadmill - slow go... very depressing... but.. . I MOVED... I did it!

Yesterday wasn't a great eating day, but at least I kept it somewhat controlled. Rather than putting things off until next week though, I'll shoot for eating "clean" again today.

Today I also intend to commence my 2008 walking-training plan. Only a short walk today, but a start none-the-less. Only 354 days until the Donald. ;)

Keep up the good work everyone. One day and one step at a time.

Howdy, Everyone!

You are all doing great. The hardest part, in my humble opinion, is getting started! Remember, we can't conquer it all at once, it's just one small decision at a time.

I am eating well, but I am experiencing LARGE fluctuations from day-to-day. I am going to have to quit weighing myself. I do this all the time. Eventually, I will quit sliding up and down the scale as much as 6 pounds and stop....for a long, long time. Then the slide begins again. :confused3 At least, it's not boring! :upsidedow

I am doing really well with getting my butt up and doing some things. We are in the process of modeling and remodeling (actually, we have found a contractor and waiting.....:hourglass ) so, I have been really, really busy trying to get myself in the groove, so this doesn't throw me off!

Here's to your health! -- Connie

Way to go, Bill! -- you got us moving again! Good luck with your walk. I ate better yesterday, it would have been great if not for that bag of popcorn, but that's so much better than a week ago!:lovestruc

Sandy -- You did do it, and we're proud of you!:goodvibes

Larah -- Four days in a row is awesome! I cringe at the thought of 20 pts, I love my food, but I know I've got to get there!popcorn::

Vic -- You are definitely going to be a lean machine with your schedule!:worship:

Minnie -- You're eating great! It does help me if I put in my points for the whole day, then subtract or add as needed. Fewer "slip-ups" that way...:scared1:

Lynnda -- Congratulations on your great loss! What a wonderful motivator, and the new doc sounds awesome!:thumbsup2

Debra -- You've inspired me. It's my rest day, but I'm going to do strength training tonight. Then I can post with all you high achievers!:woohoo:

I am happy to report things are going well for me. I am back in the groove with my eating, but continue to struggle not to eat after 8:00. I haven't eaten, but it's hard every night to say no to snacking! It's a bad time for me for the 'mindless' eating. I just have to eat nothing!!!!!

I am down 6.5 pounds since jan 1st, and I am working hard for it. I have been running 25 miles a week, and spent an hour on the elliptical last night for 6.5 miles! My mind is in the game!

I talked to dh about last night - he said that's common after a marathon -

Connie I have the same scale obsession - it took everything in my power NOT to get on the scale today - my clothes arent loser, so stay off the scale.. :sad2: I have decided its THE BIGGEST LOSERs fault!! They pull pretty big numbers - except for the women - they always have 1 or 2 # losses, and work very hard!! (not every woman every week) so I'm staying off the scale...

GOALS
1. Water, water water... increase water, decrease snackage - stick with fruits and veggies as a snack.

2. Ab Routine - situps, side winders, (similiar to a pilates routine Callenetics)

3. Walk Away the Pounds video

Wow!! It sounds like ya'll are doing great. I want to thank all of you for the motivation and the inspiration to get moving again. It has been raining here all morning, so I was reading the boards and was going to post. I stopped myself though, and thought I won't post till I get a couple of miles in. I was dreading getting on the elliptical and was so thankful when the skies cleared. I was able to get my miles in outside during a break in the rain.

It was only my second walk since the Half. Well, that doesn't include walking the parks on Sunday and Monday. However, I am amazed at how much my legs still ache. My shins and my knees in particular. Thing is.... these never gave a me any trouble during the Half but are sore now. Is this common or is it something I need to keep an eye on?

I'm so proud of all of you. You have made some great changes and are taking steps to making your goals reality. That is awesome. For me, I think I am going to cncentrate on small changes and doing them one at a time. I've done several changes at once, and I just can't maintain it. I know my progress will be slow, but I'm hoping it will be lasting. My goal is 5 pounds and a small healthy change every month.

Water is the first change on the list. I really don't like drinking it, but know I need to. I am a Diet Coke addict and will always grab a soda over water any day. I do find it easier to drink when I'm working out, but I know I'm supposed to get even more in during that time.

Anyway, I have not been a frequent poster, so a little about me..... I'm 42 and a SAHM to 2 great girls (8 and almost 6). Dh is an airline pilot, so trying to get the miles in can be challanging when he's at work and the kids aren't in school. I am working on that. My girls have never shown any interest in riding their bikes, and I'm going to really encourage them to do that. I'm hoping that by summer we'll be able to go out doing that as a family in the evenings. By 8:30, it is already too hot to do much outside -- except swim.

I will be doing the 15K Minnie in May and the Half again next January. I really don't like exercising for the sake of exercising or even getting healthier. However, I find that if I have something like a race to work toward then I m not exercising. I'm training, and I like it more. I know I'm doing the same thing, but it is a different mindset for me. I'm also hoping the miles/hours challenge will help keep me moving as well. :cheer2: :cheer2: Go team 2. :cheer2: :cheer2:

Okay, that's it. Sorry for the long post. Have a healthy day team. Stay strong.

JimB.

Geez. I have a lot of work to do just to keep up. I get winded just reading everyone's posts.

BTW, 16 miles on the bike today. Max sprint of 28.1 mph ('course, the 15 mph tailwind didn't hurt. ;) ;) )

What an awesome support group! Everybody seems to be really on top of things. Today was a short run, 2 miles. I started lifting weights again yesterday so my legs muscles felt kind of heavy when I ran today. And it's raining!:upsidedow

We really needed the rain, but if it could just stop long enough to get in a good dry run...;)

I'm still trying to work out my carb ratios. I don't want to go too low, but not too high either. Right now I'm around 40 % that's without subtracting fiber. Truthfull what I need to do is find something and stick to it, instead of diet hoping all over the place!

Have a super day everyone!

I wasn't excited about it, but MADE myself get up and go do the 4-mile WATP this a.m. before my shower. I knew it wouldn't get done otherwise and don't want to break the stride I'm in so far. Yesterday did Biggest Loser low-intensity cardio and toning. Doing okay with my eating and at 9 points so far including lunch. Have a dinner out tonight with friends and always find that a struggle. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of fish (ok, I won't eat it:rolleyes: ) but I'm working today on trying to get psyched about maybe trying to like a good healthy omega-3 fish...:confused3 Otherwise, hopefully I can find a nice salad or something.
GREAT JOB EVERYONE and THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!

Another day at the gym, another day of C25K, regular TM work, and elliptical. I managed about 75 minutes, then we had to go so DH could go to work early. I should have worked at a higher intensity than I did, but there was this magazine...

Lynnda, that's great news about your doctor. Having one who really listens to you, and looks at you as a person/takes a look at your whole life, is so important. And so hard to find, I've found. Oh, and congrats on the 10lbs! Whoo-hoo!

Wow, Vic, it sounds like your blisters were really bad. I got them regularly throughout my training, so my Goofy blisters just nestled on top of the old ones & are still healing. So I'm very impressed that you're already running and have scheduled a 5K. Good luck on Saturday.

Sandy, you're right. You moved, you did it. And I find it's very hard to do in winter. What I most want to do is settle in with a nice cup of cocoa & watch movies. So the fact that you did miles on the TM is impressive! Connie is right, getting started is the hardest part--and we're getting started. DLF > DNF > DNS!

I'm another one who is obsessed with the scale--I tend to stare it every day and then think, "What lies are you going to tell me today?" If it's shows I lost weight, I don't believe it. If it shows I gained weight, it confirms my 'failure.' So I've been making a big effort to step away from the scale except for my once a week weigh-ins. Not too successfully, at this point.

Bill, you're already counting down to the Donald! :cool1: Have you signed up already? I've been putting off the decision, so reading your post makes me know I have to get a plan of attack in for the year. Speaking of motivation, I had been having problems motivating to go out to an acquaintance's book signing tonight. Mainly because it's within walking distance (1.5 miles) but not convenient walking distance. Thanks to Maria's posts, I'm just going to "man up" and do it--it'll mean a lot to here that I'm there.

And since Minnie has narrowly averted the siren song of the vending machine, I feel obligated to try & avoid the grande mocha that will be within reach of me while I'm standing in line with (another) copy of her book. No promises though, as I'm not sure I have the willpower of either you or Larahb. Beth, I so understand about the mindless eating. I absolutely HAD to have popcorn last night--but I consoled myself with the fact it was Orville Redenbacher's 100 calorie pack and consoled myself with the popcorn.

Oh, and Eva, add me to the list of folks who aren't that fond of water (which is why I'm so fond of Sandy's goals, keeping me aware of my need to consume.) I MUCH prefer Diet Coke, which became my soda of choice after I had to give up my much beloved and still-missed mountain dew. I need external motivation too, and I'm beginning to think races might be it. I'm really impressed by your determination.

I can't wait for the warm weather, either. I'm doing lots of exercise indoor, but when I am outside I'm toddling like a penguin. (And not my favorite, Bingham species). I love being outdoors on my bike, but I'm not yet a biker. When spring hits, Jim, I might be asking you for tips.

Texa, do you usually lift weights before you run? I keep switching back & forth, because I'm not sure what's best. Right now, I'm doing it before an easy run (hah--all my runs are easy) to that I can concentrate on lifting form. But then my legs are tired...

Anyway, hope everyone is having a great, energizing day!!!!

Big Vic

Good afternoon everyone.

Looks as though everyone is doing well.

Maria - WTG with getting the biking in. I've committed my self to improve my 1/2 marathon performances, and I have to have to have projects (races) to stay committed.

Bill - Get that walk in. That's an order, mister!

Minigirl - Good luck with the training.

Sandy - WTG with the 2 miler!

Connie - Good luck with the training, and the renovations.

Beth - WTg with the 6.5 miler, and the weght loss!

JimB - WTG with the 16 miler!

Texa - WTG with the 2 miler!

Larahp - WTG with the 4 miler!

Debra - Great workout. Yea, I had a blister about the size of a silver dollar on the ball of each foot. Never got a blister, and wore the same shoes and socks as I did during training. I'm assuming the heat and humidity had a lot to do with it.

Y'all keep up the great work. :thumbsup2

Hi, Stacie! Congratulations on the 21lbs--that's quite an accomplishment.

As for me, there was an incident last night at the reading. Quite dangerous, involving chocolate. I survived, but yesterday's nutritional plan did not. :rotfl:

Oh, well, today's another day. Looks like I've got no excuses for not doing something today. Not even the steady snowfall. I'll try to pop in later when I've accomplished something worth talking about. Meanwhile, feel free to beat me about the virtual head and shoulders.

Hey! :wave2: You all are doing AWESOME!!! :cheer2:

I had a minor non-scale victory today... I just got back from the grocery store with 2 little ones in tow (something I avoid at all costs!). But, I stuck to the plan, got what was on my list, and shopped the perimeter of the store - detouring only for oatmeal and salad dressing. :woohoo: And the boys were very well behaved - always a plus!!! ;) It was fun because I started having Billy look at the nutrition labels. He doesn't understand everything, but he can tell me which brand has fewer calories and fat, and is therefore healthier. Yea! Now, if I can just get him to eat the food!!!! :lmao:

As for exercise, I'm hoping to go for a bike ride when DH gets home.

Keep up the great work. If you had a bad eating day yesterday, dust yourself off and remember today is a new day. We can do this! :thumbsup2

Maria, thanks for being so supportive & adding your own confessional. Chocolate is my downfall. Subway's not so bad, though, for fast food. Did you get your 40 minutes in?

Minnie, I love natural peanut butter--it sounds fabulous--and your choice of a salad sounds like it was both healthy & satisfying. What team are you on for the Miles/Minutes Challenge? I hope you're on Team 6/Ohana, but if not I'll still have fun trash-talking with you! :thumbsup2

Lynnda, it's good to hear positive thoughts. I tend to use humor to deal with everything, but I do get down on myself when I slip up. In terms of your victory--whoo hoo! Well-behaved boys & learning about nutrition? Mom of the year!

Speaking of slipping, last night I slipped on black ice & my knee has been a little twinge-y. I managed to get through my strength training, but the knee really didn't like the squats & my form wasn't strong. Afterwards I decided to take it easy today and will ice it tonight; I'm planning on hitting the treadmill tomorrow if the knee isn't too tender. Sometimes I think I'm too klutzy to work out.:lmao: (No excuses after Feb. 1, though.)

Good evening lean meaners!

Glad to see everyone is moving ahead and staying motivated.

Tonight was supposed to be a few miles on the TM. However, there's a water main break down the street and we don't have any water. Can't get all sweaty iff'n I can't shower. That would be rude. :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Debra - take care of that knee.

Y'all take care and keep up the great work!

I have had a good scale day!!!!! I am down 8 pounds since Jan 1st! I was surprized at that since I had to take the day off of excerise yesterday since I took a road trip to see the Spirit of the Marathon with my sister. It was awesome, but I thought the scale would taunt me this morning.....but no, it was my friend!!!! I have been aiming for 10 pounds this month, and the dream is still alive! 8 is great, and I am really happy with that!

Way to keep at it everyone. One day at a time; Slow and steady wins the race; etc., etc.

I am happy to see so many encouraging each other and themselves. I have been doing pretty good this week on the food front. No, I haven't managed to eat "clean" all week, but I have gone most of the week eating fairly smart and limiting major break-downs. I think I just need to ease into it a little this time, so I am counting this first week as the break-in period of trying to control the triggers and next week I start in my new my role/job as a person who eats healthy most of the time.

Stacie--Congrats on the loss to date.

Beth-- Way to go on the 8 lbs. Sometimes the body needs a rest/slight change of pace to realize its time to unload a little more weight. The human body is a remarkable machine that has adopted and survived for a long time and some of those early survival genes still work to ensure that we make it.

Lynnda--Way to start the WISHlets while their young. My three DDs all have been reading nutitional labels (not that any of them really need to worry themselves) for years. They are always agast at the amount of fat and calories in some of the foods they eat. Luckily, they and my DS are all VERY active. The DDs also control their snacking. In fact, DD#2 has the most interesting diet. She is the tall, lean one who seems to live on salads and chocolate cakes/brownies. DS is a non-stop machine when it comes to activity, but I think he would live on chicken nuggets and hamburgers if we let him (typical male ;) ).

Big Vic--Thanks for all the encouragement and showing us how to getter done.

Debra--I mailed in my registration for the 2009 WDW Marathon Weekend last week. This weekend will mark 2.25 score for me. So that will give me 50 weeks to prepare for my First Big WDW Endurance Adventure. (I plan to treat the Tower of Terror events as Big WDW Endurance Adventure Tune-ups.)

Maria, Sandy, Kathy, Wendy, Jeane, Lara, Connie, Tex, Eva, julie & nicks mom, Susie, Minnie and Jim (sorry if I missed anyone)--you are all inspiring and doing great. Thanks for checking in and posting.

Remember, this thread is just an impetus. Each of YOU are the ones that are actually making the choices to get out there, put in the time/miles and eat healthy. Reading what people are actually DOING is the true inspiration.

snacks are hard - I wanted chocolate, dd had a bowl of ice cream - so how to handle those cravings are always a challenge...

I bought some fresh fruits and veggies - so I sliced some cucumbers up (you have to have them to use them!!) and I boiled some balsamic vinegar down to make it a reduction - and then I poured it on the cukes - It tastes very sweet, and it killed the chocolate craving!! I know you can buy a really good balsamic - but I have the cheap stuff - its why I boil it down...

I got a scale boost yesterday - about a year ago DH bought a new scale - we hated it b/c we thought it weighed high - for both of us - and was not in line with what we were seeing at the gym or doctor's office. My husband wanted to return it but how do you return a scale and say it says we weigh more than we think we do :lmao:

So yesterday I decided to go buy a new scale - and I instantly lost 7 pounds!!! So that was good - but not a real weight loss...

this stupid bronchitis is kicking my butt - no exercise at all and I feel yucky and food doesn't taste good so I have been eating very little but falling into the trap of eating comfort foods - like chocolate...luckily the fact that I am eating very little seems to be on my side with this...

I have decided not to beat myself up over this and am setting Feb 1 as my get my butt in gear date - that should hopefully allow me to exercise without coughing up a lung!!!

Julia and Nick's mom: That is a great way to lose 7 pounds....none of that pesky food limitations. Can it work for all of us??? :lmao:

Bill: Slow and steady wins the race! :goodvibes Take your time and change the bad habits slowly. That's the way to keep the good habits for a life time.

Sandy: Snacks......they are the weight upon my soul. The other night, the family was all eating a late time snack, and I practically lost my mind. I am trying not to eat after 8:00pm, but that never gets easier. I had to walk out of the room, or I would have eaten something.

Big Vic: I will have to remember the 'broken water main' story.....that one works for me! :lmao: I sweat so much, I could BE the water main! (nothing feels as good as that shower does!:goodvibes )

I have just made a family dessert for tonight from my new Light and Tasty magazine from Taste of Home. A lighten version of cheesecake bites! I reduced some of the carbs too, so I can endulge tonight! It smells great!

Hope everyone is having a successful day!

Maybe we could send my scale on a vacation to each of you ;) I lost 1/2 a pound since yesterday!!

I made a ticker but it isn't showing up in my previous post so I am testing to see if it is there now...

Then I need to make a Flying Pig ticker or clipart...I should put all my marathons in there to motivate me!!

Big Vic: Lean meaners! I love it! I always have a vision of Mean Joe Greene and the Coke ad when I open this thread....Thanks for the concern for the knee. I know I have a tendency to ignore my body's signals, so the words were appreciated.

Beth: 8 pounds & goal within sight! That's great news. I hope you enjoyed Spirit. And "weight upon [your] soul," and the weight on scale. I love good snackage. Or rather, bad snackage. I'm trying to see my snacks as mini-meals, not desserts. Hard to do when I'm eating an apple & nuts and my DH asks me if there's any carrot cake left. (Does that count as healthy--it's got carrots!)

Bill: Wishlets!! Another great turn of phrase. We have some really clever folks here. That's right, slow & steady wins the race. It sounds like you're doing well. And I like how you're approaching ToT events as tune-ups. I've been trying to convince DH that we should do ToT (and maybe taste) as warm-ups before marathon weekend. (He seems to want to run other-than-Disney races, though...). I think the tune-up idea works much better, though, and would actually help with my performance issues in Orlando heat. :thumbsup2

Sandy: Good tip on the balsamic, both for the chocolate cravings & the reduction. I tend to eat frozen grapes or nuts for my sweet-tooth snackage; I think my body confuses a need for protein with a desire for sugar. I love these kinds of suggestions, as I tend to get in a real food rut & like to try new things.

Speaking of foods, if anyone out there has vegetarian suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'm always looking for ways to increase my protein intake without hitting the fats too much. (I don't eat meat, fish, or gelatin, but will consume dairy and eggs.)

Julie & Nick's Mom: Sorry to hear you're sick, but good to know you're taking care of yourself. Chocolate is one of my go-to comfort foods, too. Why can't it be broccoli? I hope you can exercise soon, though, as I think you're losing weight the hard way.

As for me: My nutritional intake today is on-target. And I believe I'm progressing smoothly if not consistently. Some days are harder than others, with no one reason that I can determine. I'm wondering if I need a more substantial breakfast with more protein given my current, overall fitness level. I never skip breakfast, but I tend to eat just cereal & a banana, totaling a little over 300 calories. (Not much of a morning person, so I'm not hungry.) As I'm working out in the a.m. more often, I think I should try to shift where my I consume most of the day's calories; I'd like to have a little more energy throughout the day.

I did work out this morning, 90 minutes of cardio (mostly elliptical, but with another C25K session). I'm going to take it easy on the knee for next couple of days--no high-impact exercises, more biking, rowing, slow walking, and *careful* strength training. My knee actually feels okay but I'm also very aware that I have a knee, if that makes any sense. That's usually a sign I need to back off for a bit.

:rotfl: Go LEAN MEANERS!! You are all doing so very, very well! :goodvibes

I am down another pound. That makes 7 since the first. I am really trying for 10 by April 27th! I won't change that, I will just keep thinking 10, all the way through. Maybe with diligence I can make it two 10's!!

I am toying with the idea of trying the WDW marathon next year. I think I can even swing it on points...or get close, anyway. I just don't know if I can do Disney, alone. :guilty: That just seems wrong, somehow.....
Even a tune up all by myself would be hard...okay not all by myself, but y'all know what I mean, don't you?

Sandy, for those chocolate cravings try some Swiss Miss diet hot cocoa or a couple of pieces of Dark Dove Chocolates. They both take care of that craving!!

Beth Way to go on the eight!

Julie and Nick's MOM Cool scale. I hope it doesn't break your heart later. I had one that did! :sad2: Turned out it was 12 lbs wrong and I was fatter not skinnier! I got over it, if not over the 12 lbs! :rolleyes1

Connie - Awesome job on the weight loss!!! :thumbsup2 You know you would never be alone at the marathon, but I understand your difficult decision. That Mickey medal is pretty amazing, though! ;)

Debra - Great job on the cardio!!! :cool1: I have found that I do feel better when I eat a larger breakfast. My problem is that somehow my larger breakfast never gets balanced with a smaller dinner. :rotfl:

Kate - Great job on the loss, and I love your scale!!!! :rotfl2: Can we make it the official WISH scale? :goodvibes And I hope you feel better SOON!

Beth - Awesome job on losing 8!!! :woohoo: And that dessert sounds wonderful!

Sandy - Way to go on the healthy snack! I have the hardest time staying out of DS's food. We are trying to get him switched away from the not-so-healthy snacks, but he is resisting GREATLY! :rotfl:

Bill - I could seriously live on your DD2's diet. :thumbsup2 However, I am currently far from tall or lean - that diet apparently never worked for me! :rolleyes1 Good job on controlling the triggers! Next week is going to be great!

I was able to get out and bike last night. I didn't get as far as I wanted because my front light went out :scared1: , and by the time I got back to the house it started raining. Grrrr!!! Today was rest day, and I'm not sure what I will do tomorrow. I was hoping to go to the pool (since I have a tri in less than four months  ), but we are actually supposed to be cold again tomorrow. (Cold is relative, I realize - but the high is only supposed to be 66, and I am a true Florida girl - brrrrrr!) :lmao:

Nutrition has been pretty good - I am working on cutting extra sugar and processed stuff, adding more veggies, and drinking lots of water.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Keep up the great work - you can do it, and you are definitely worth the effort! :goodvibes

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful Saturday morning.

I'm supposed to be getting ready for a 5K this morning. However, it doesn't look as though the weather is going to cooperate. It's currently raining and looks to do so throughout the morning. I'm dedicated, but not that dedicated.

Was supposed to workout last night, but had company at the house when I got home from work. All of these distractions are not conducive for consistant training. :rotfl:

Beth - WTG with the weight loss. I also blame stuff on the dogs. :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Bill - Keep up the good work. One day at a time, my brutha.

Sandy - WTG with the snacks.

Julia and nicks mom - Take care of the bronchitis!

Debra - WTG with the workout!

Connie - WTG with the weight loss. You know you want to do the marathon. Do it! Do it! Do it! :)

Lynnda - WTG with the biking.

Here's an article from WebMd. Y'all have a great weekend. :)

so you all don't have to keep typing Julia & Nicks mom - my name is Kate! Way easier to type!!! ;)

Did anyone read about the expedition everest event? It sounds SO cool but I don't think it is in the cards this year!! Maybe if there is a great deal on aifare!! I live in Cincinnati so I could go on Skybus if I get the $10 fare - which I could also use to go to Disneyland for the half and to....

You all are doing so awesome on the exercise and diet!! Very inspirational to me sitting here coughing up a lung...my DH just went to work out and said he would tell the gym I said hi - like I would rather be sitting here coughing than working out...

Vic I don't blame you for not running in the rain...that is my limit too - you really don't want to risk getting sick and then have to put training on hold!!!

Debra - I'm on Team 1 - should be fun! Race you to the dreadmill :cool1:

Beth - Wow that is awesome!! Congrats on the loss

Next week I start in my new my role/job as a person who eats healthy most of the time.

I love this statement :thumbsup2

Connie - 7lbs that is wonderful :cool1:

So far so good. Yesterday was yogurt for breakfast, grilled chicken salad for lunch, and peanut butter on ww crackers for dinner (not the best but I didn't feel very good).

I've managed to make the dreadmill a treadmill again and not a clothes rack and did a 30 minute wog to get back at it :cool1:

Have a great weekend lean meaners!

Hey everyone! Just a quick driveby. I see many of you are doing f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s with your goals of losing weight, getting healthier, etc. I need to get my rear in gear to catch up with y'all.

I walked on the dreadmill for 3 miles last night. It's the first time I've been able to get on the darn thing due to the nasty blister I acquired on the ball of my left foot from the full a few weeks ago. (Wow, it's been 2 weeks ago. Just doesn't seem like it). Actually, I've used this blister excuse to eat my way through the kitchen and I've got to stop it!!! Reading through your reports have given me amunition to get back to the gym today for some good 'ol XT and to get outside tomorrow for some more walking!

Keep up the good work, all!

I'm loving the lean meaner name. It makes me do my Hulk impression--where in my fantasy world I'm really ripped & intimidating. Grrrr. Thanks again for the moniker, Bill & Vic (seems like a collaborative creation, from the thread title to the nickname).

Connie: congrats on the loss & your plan to keep going. I DO know what you mean about Disney alone; but you want to come out and play with us, don't you? Pleeeaaaase???

Lynnda: You're a tri-athlete? Wow, that's something I'd love to do, someday. What do you like best about it? Thanks for the feedback on the breakfast; I suspected as much. Congrats on the water, veggies and sugar changes.

Vic: Darn those guests and those social life! I hope you had a good evening. And I assume there's another 5K or race around the corner for you?

Kate (Hi Kate, officially!): I SO want to do the EE inaugural race, but I don't think we can swing it financially either, especially with other tasty events in the area (not to mention Disney ones).

Minnie: Yeah, you might need to drag me to the dreadmill, although I certainly dislike it far less than I used to. Congratulations on the 30 minutes and keeping track of both your food intake & the feelings you have when you eat. :thumbsup2

Susie: Welcome to the blister club. It sounds like the full was a blister-breeding ground for lots of us. 3 miles is good--you're still healing.

As for me: I just went grocery shopping & picked up some stuff with an eye toward a heartier morning meal. That means more protein for me, less sugars. (You can't see me right now, but there's a tear in my eye.) I'll let folks know who it goes. I'd just like to have more energy in the a.m. in general, let alone for working out.

I also worked out at the gym today: strength/circuit training & the elliptical. The treadmills were open, darn it, but I resisted because my knee still feels a bit "off." I promised myself give it a break this weekend, but it's so hard when the machines look all lonely. The good news is, by tomorrow or Monday we should have warm(er) weather again, so just being outside will seem like its reward.

I know weekends can be hard for most folks, with family and social obligations and just the need for some rest. But keep up the good work, lean meaners, because you're doing these things for YOU! And you're important and so very worth it!

 Kate

I think I'm going to get sick of Turkey Bacon!! Right now I get 2 slices 70 calories! I've been taking a lean slice of turkey, low fat Ranch dressing, 2 slices of bacon and lots of romaine lettuce for a lunch (tomatoes just are too expensive right now!!) and putting it in one of those low fat wraps!! I got the idea perusing the South Beach Diet frozen and fresh areas in the supermarket!!

I also like the Morningstar fake sausage (not sure what the real name is!! I think its made with the soy so its not real meat! Great spices) cooked in an egg like an omelet for a good morning protein....

just need to kick start the exercise routine, and drink the water!! I'm keeping a nalgene bottle near me, and when I want something, I have to decide if its thirst that's driving the craving....

Lynnda: You're a tri-athlete?

Debra - Thank you!!! That definitely put a smile on my face! Of course, DH was more like this... :lmao: I mentioned this on another thread, but I volunteered for the Danskin (at WDW) 3 years ago, participated 2 years ago, and watched from the sidelines last year with my wee one who was 6 weeks old. So, I've actually only done one tri, and it is shorter than a regular sprint triathlon. However, I LOVE this race!!!! The swim is 400 yrds in the Seven Seas Lagoon (in front of CR), the bike is 9 miles, and the run (walk) is 2 miles through MK. There is no time limit, and they have swim angels on kayaks and in the water with noodles if you have trouble in the lake. You are never the last place finisher - Sally Edwards always comes in last. It supports breast cancer research, and the first wave in the swim has all the cancer survivors with bright pink swim caps. During the expo, they bring all the survivors on stage to celebrate them. Every year has a huge group of truly amazing, strong, and courageous women. Anyway, I could go on forever about this event... but I would not call myself a triathlete. Lynne (xterratri) and Christa (gatorphipps) are competitive tri-ers, and gave me some wonderful advice on getting started. As for my favorite event, I love to swim. I actually took lessons for four months before the tri - I knew how to swim before, but not how to do a real stroke. There is an aquatic center about 15 minutes away, but the pool is outdoors, so winter training is fun! :scared1: Anyway, I'm sure that was way more info than you wanted, but the Danskin in such a wonderful event - I don't want people to think it is unattainable. Ladies of all sizes, shapes, and abilities do the race side-by-side. :goodvibes

Vic - Thanks for the article, and sorry about the rain (and the other distractions). Tomorrow is another day, though, and you can do it!

Kate - I would love to do EE, but DH has said no right now... something about me already wanting to do race for the taste, race for the cure, tower of terror... ;) Hope you feel better soon!

Minnie - YEA for getting on the dreadmill!!! And go Team 1!!! (that will sound better when we get a name...) :thumbsup2

Susie - Great job on the 3 miles! I hear you on the blister excuse - I'm still using it, too!

Sandy - Awesome job on the food choices!!! :thumbsup2 Now, go drink some water! ;)

No swimming for me this morning since the baby was sick. Food was pretty good, although I've had the munchies non-stop. Grrrr... Tomorrow, I may try to eat smaller meals/snacks more frequently. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Stay strong! :thumbsup2

Hi Everyone-

I am so inspried by you guys.

Just a few short years ago, I got up off my couch and ran my first mile. I have dropped 7 jean sizes since then. I wish I could say that it was easy or that it is easy now but I can't. It takes hard work and a lot of dedication to stay healthy in this country. I still need to take of 10 pounds but as I get older it seems less and less likely that it will ever come off.

I drive to the gym where there is enough distraction to keep me from actually exercising and when I leave I have to pass 20 restaurants on the drive home.

Or I go to the grocery store and are bombarded with easy to make high fat and high calorie meals. I am tired and stressed and a salad just isn't going to make me feel good. Not to mention that all my grocery stores put the bakery in the front where I have to pass the choclate eclairs on my way to the healthy food.

The little voice in my head tells me I deserve a choclate eclair after all I ran x miles today....And if I could just buy one that might be ok, but they come in a package of 4........

Keep up the good work. Stick with it. I hope you won't mind if I stick my head in here once in a while to keep me motivated. You are all such an incredible group of people!

G'morning mates!
Everyone is doing so well! WTG! I had a good start yesterday doing the 4-mile WATP DVD and then the Walk/Kick DVD. Had a healthy breakfast and lunch and THEN... we arrived at our friends' Hitz Hockey party and I caved on numerous occasions. :confused3 Starting over again this a.m. with a bowl of instant oatmeal and deciding which exercise to choose for today. We have a few inches of snow this a.m. and living in the country makes outdoor runs on snowy country roads tough. Getting a little sick of Leslie's walk DVDs, but they took work as cardio, so...:cool1:
Hope everyone has a great day and good start to the new lean mean week!!

Cruella de Mom: Don't I know it!!! It's hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle, when it is so much easier (and faster) to be unhealthy! I just started a menu for the week idea, with hopefully one trip to the grocery store! But, it still needs to be done everyday! It certainly does cost more to be healthy too!

I am happy that things are still going pretty well with me. I would love to lose 2 more pounds by Thursday......it would make 10 pounds this month! That would be awesome, but if it doesn't happen it's ok!

I am making a recipe from the new Taste of Home....Light and Tasty today. Italian Dinner soup with chicken. It sure smells good!

Good afternoon Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a great Sunday.

Was able to get on the TM for 2 miles this afternoon. With the exception of my tender left foot, I'm feeling good. I just haven't been able to toughen up the new skin on the bottom of my foot yet. Dern blister! We'll get there though.

Looks like eveyone is doing well. Keep up the great work!

Y'all take care.

Happy Sunday everyone...............

I've decided (actually I've been coerced) to run my 1st Marathon in 3 weeks ( I think it's called "The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer"), so today I crammed a 14.5 mile LR into my schedule.

It's not gonna' be either fast OR pretty, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to finish. My ego wants to do it in a specific double-secret time, but the logical side of my brain (which, admittedly, is not that big.........) tells me just to finish with a smile & build from there.

I am still having issues w/pain in various parts of my lower extremities which i have GOT to resolve, maybe through on-course biofreeze application & Advil consumption.

Afterwards my DW decided she wanted to break in her BRAND NEW running shoes at our local park, so slap another 2.5 on just a while ago.

If I can now only start to eat less ca-ca, I may get under 200 lbs for the first time in many years. It's getting close!

deekaypee
01-27-2008, 06:01 PM
Sandy: Thanks for the Morningstar suggestion! I'm going to try to eat more protein at breakfast and it sounds like a great option for me! I also eat faux turkey as a quick fix, so I kinda understand your ambivalence about the Turkey Bacon. A little goes a long way. (Hey, I know it's not the same thing, but it's as close to meat as I get...I try to stay as far away as possible.)

Lynnda: Thanks for all the information--it sounds wonderful & supportive. Now if I could just get over my fear of water and learn to swim. Someday, and maybe this is the kind of incentive I need. But, anyway, I still think of you as a tri-athlete, a well-rounded participant if not concerned with being cut-throat competitive! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) I'm impressed, really I am.

Cruella de Mom: You're ever so welcome here, and your story is also very inspiring. You've got such willpower--I tend to convince myself that the eclairs are lonely, that I should just take them all home. I work on ignoring that inner voice a lot. Two steps forward, one step back. But I'm stepping. (Btw, I just have to say I love your name.)

Lara: Social occasions are so hard, aren't they. Especially related to sports, I find, at least here in PA. (I'm a new transplant to Pgh, so the local sports culture & its rituals throw me for a bit of a loop.) But look at how many GOOD choices you've made. It's kinda like falling on the ice, you just get up, brush yourself off and move on. (A tortured metaphor, I know, but good work anyway!)

Beth: I love that you're holding that healthy attitude as the end of the month comes; that's where I normally get anxious. You know: it's sooo close that I'm afraid of the emotional downfall if I don't hit my target. I'm working really hard at the balance you already have. Oh, and the soup sounds healthy. I think I'll russell up a veggie soup (canned, not homemade) for dinner.

Vic: Glad to see another lean meaner check in here! Are you using any ointment on your foot for the blisters? Now that mine are closed, I've been using Bag Balm.

Jim: Wow--congratulations, I think? Your marathon is coming up quick, but it certainly sounds like you have a solid base. You sure you don't want to share your secret time with us. C'mon, it's only us chicken hawks.... How is your DW's new shoes & the run?

As for me: It was all low/no-impact this weekend, and that was a hard decision to stick to. The good news is that my knee feels pretty good, so I'll be able to continue my running program tomorrow. (Baby steps, but they're steps.)

I also had a fairly good weekend. For the second weekend in a row, I avoided the specialty drinks at Starbucks in favor of regular coffee. I do so like reading the Sunday paper with a piping hot drink, but I don't need to caffeine so I'm going to try tea next Sunday (not much of a fan, so we'll see). And NO snacks or soda when we saw Juno on Saturday night, so :woohoo:. I know, I know, it's only an 1 1/2 hour movie. But I like to nosh, and didn't.

I've been trying to eat more during the day and less at night, to correspond with my workout schedule. So tonight will be a light supper--soup (thanks for the suggestion, Beth), salad, and fruit. It sounds just perfect for the weather, too.

And tomorrow is weigh-in.

Happy and healthy living this week, folks. Keep up the good work!

I havent used anything, with the exception of soaking in epsom salt. Maybe I'll try some Bag Balm.

Hey Debra, I didn't realize you're in Pgh! I'm a transplant, too, from Ohio. I moved here >10 years ago, but in this part of the state, it seems that you are always "non-native" :) Are you doing any 'burgh races? I'm thinking about some!
Thanks for your kind words and looking forward to more interaction here on the board!

Hello, Everyone!

Sorry I went MIA -- it was unintentional. Life got in the way for the last few days and my training was non-existent. On the bright side, I realized it was either get going again or quit, and since that's not an option, back on the TM today!

Wow, this is a busy group, even over the weekend! Lean Meaners are in it to win it!

Lara -- I'm a northeastern transplant, trust me, you have to be here for generations to be a a "native" New Englander. I may never get the accent, but I can use "wicked" as an adjective. I'm trying to fit in:dance3:

Vic -- It sounds like your foot is coming along. Before you know it it will be as tough as old shoe leather!:goodvibes

Debra -- I think I'm the only person on the planet who hasn't seen Juno yet (other than dh, of course). Did you enjoy it?:upsidedow

Jim -- Best of luck on your first Marathon! I don't think I'll ever get there -- it is a huge accomplishment to be ready to do it!:cool1:

Beth -- How was your soup? We had ww Pot Roast again last night. I think that could become a staple. It's easy and the whole family will eat it:lovestruc

Cruella -- Aren't you Susan? I get so confused! Anyway, wow! Having seen you, it gives me hope. Perhaps I can really lose a few sizes. You look fantastic! I assumed you'd been healthy forever, honest! You're a great role model:)

Lynnda -- I'm a big believer in the smaller meals/snacks philosophy. I like to feel like I'm eat alot, and that seems to help!:rotfl:

Minnie -- Watch Out! Team Ohana is comin' to town!:cheer2:

Sandy -- I am guilty of loving the heck out of a "diet" food and then not being able to stand it. Give yourself a little break if you need to!:wizard:

Kate -- Feel better:sick: We want your lungs bursting with oxygen, not coughing one up!

Connie -- Awesome weight loss!

Susie -- Just keep healing, healing, healing...just keep healing...;)

Let's go guys! A new week, new us!

Hi guys! Just checking in... You are all are doing FANTASTIC!!!! I'm on the BL 4 and weigh in is tomorrow. It's not looking too good... I had a very nonmotivating weekend. I think I may be the same, but at least (hopefully) it will not be a gain!

I'd love to lose another 15-20 lbs by the 15K in May. We are gone this Thurs-Sun to WDW w/ my inlaws so I will definately buckle-down when we return.

I found out that I am probably have Celiac or at least a gutlen intolerence so I'll be dealing with that when we return too. I've got to do some research and try and get my head around it.

Tonight I'm going to the gym to do some elliptical--after the chiro. It's been 2 weeks since the 5K and I finally manage to get back on the ol TM Saturday and now my hip flexor and lower back are acting up...again! :headache: I sure hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew w/ this Minnie 15K. I have only worked up and done a 5K...no other trainin than that...

Lynnda--This may sound like a crazy question...but where does the bike come from that you ride??? I wouldnt' mind trying something like that one day. I'd definately have to work on my swimming... Is that a very far distance???

Keep pushing!!! Everyone is doing awesome!!! I'll try to check in more frequently! I've got too many threads to keep up with! :goodvibes

I am so impressed with all of you keeping up with a reply to each of us .... I think my brain is just too foggy to wrap my brain around a task like that right now...

Stacie - sorry about the Celiac/gutlen intolerence - look at the plus side to it - you will be forced to follow a strict diet - it should help those extra pounds!!! I had gestational diabetes and that was the only way I could wrap my brain around it - just to think about the positive effects it would have on my life...but I did have a full out meltdown when I figured out I could not fit ice cream into my diet!!!! I have a friend with celiac and he was so miserable before he got it under control but it has been several years and he says he can't believe how much better he feels now - the initial period was an adjustment but I know you will feel so much better once ytou get it under control!!!

My Julia has strep so she is home with me today...and tomorrow...hopefully that is all!!! We just started antibiotics today but I think she had the worst of it over the weekend so she feels good enough to drive me crazy...;)

Did you all see that the half if 55% full...I REALLY want to do the Full - my DH is going to and I really want to but his parents do not seem on board with going with us and I just am not ready to commit to the Full right now...I was hoping to get another half (the flying pig in May) under my belt before I made a decision but it appears that I can't wait that long - so I guess it is the half for me....

Stacie

Stacie - not a crazy question at all... You can use any type of bike at the Danskin - people had triathlon bikes, road bikes, hybrids, and regular beach cruisers with big tires. You can either bring your own or rent. I think Wendy posted about renting one last year - it was close to $200, though. If you have to fly, you can always ship your bike - Lynne (xterratri) has done that several times. As for the swim, you really don't have to be a good swimmer. They send the swimmers out in waves about every 4 minutes - survivors first, then elites, followed by age groups (every 5 years), with mixed age group last. I went in the mixed age group so I could do it with friends, and we saw people doggie paddling, doing backstroke, sidestroke, and a few that were just kind of getting from one swim angel to the next (people with swim noodles). The regular age groups had stronger swimmers in them and seemed to be a little more competitive. 400 yrds seemed like a HUGE distance when I started swimming, but it really isn't bad. I go to a pool with 25 yrd lap lanes, so it is 16 lengths of the pool (or 8 "round-trips"). I highly recommend checking out your community pool (if you have one) and getting a few lessons, even if you know how to swim. I had a great teacher who not only taught me proper form and strokes, but also how to conserve energy for longer distances, and helped me come up with a strategy for getting through the race. Because our pool is run by the county, lessons were only $10 each. :thumbsup2 You can definitely do this!!!

I'll check in with everyone later - the baby is calling...

Now I'm sick. Have you been spreading cyber-germs? Just kidding. :)

If you guys don't see me much in the next few days it's because I'm laid up. I'm like a grumpy old bear when I'm sick. Leave me alone and don't fuss over me. Marilyn hates that.

I have a feeling that I might be a permanent alien, too, although I really like Pgh so far. (Except for these hills-they'll be the death of me, I swear.) I just moved here, less than 6 months ago and we haven't spent a lot of time here due to traveling, etc., but I'd like to do some burgh races. I'm not really sure what's out there, though. Pgh has a Race for the Cure, right? And they've promised to bring back the marathon, I think? Anyway, we're so new to the area that we probably haven't heard about the best races, good running stores, etc., so any tips would be welcome!

Hello, Everyone!

Debra -- I think I'm the only person on the planet who hasn't seen Juno yet (other than dh, of course). Did you enjoy it?:upsidedow

Maria

Oh no, you didn't just ask me what I think of a movie, did you?? You don't know what you're getting yourself into!! :rotfl: Opinions, I always have opinions, on film--it's an occupational hazard (former film/lit prof. and recovering academic).

I'll let you off easy, this time, and just give you the bottom line: Juno made for a nicely enjoyable evening, and makes for a diverting 1 1/2 that goes by fairly quickly. Quite a few laughs, mostly solid performances, a good (1st) script. If you like lighthearted family comedies with a slight twist, sort of like Little Miss Sunshine, you'll probably like Juno. My DH, DMIL/DFIL, DBIL/DSIL all enjoyed it (although we didn't see it together). So I'd recommend it, even if I think the film is too slight to win Best Picture. Whew--and that was the brief response!

Stacie: How did your visit with the chiro go? I hope it was good news, meaning minor and easily treated.

Kate: Isn't it crazy how quickly things are filling up? I'd hoped for a little more time to solidify next family holiday plans before deciding, as visiting family was the real strain on our training. No such luck--I'm going to to have to man up and decide. I'm leaning toward the full, though, so maybe I can tempt you? (Come with me, come with me, it'll be fun....)

Lynnda: I don't know, I'm still pretty impressed by that distance in the pool. I'd never even thought about the logistics of getting your bike to the event, either. So much to learn...

Vic: I hope you're feeling better soon!

As for me: So far, it's been a successful intake day, with me keeping on schedule. One of the things that helps me is that I was busy cooking for DH's lunches, which means things with meat in in. Because I'm a vegetarian, I'm not the slightest bit tempted to nibble when I'm making his meals. Hey, whatever works, right?

I also weighed in today. After a week of watching (mostly) what I ate, working out, keeping a food journal, etc., the grand total (drumroll, please): 1 pound. That's right, 1 pound. Hey, I'll take it. I'm choosing to think of my body as much more efficient than it was a year ago. (That, and my body has an unhealthy attachment to its extra pounds--the rest might get lonely, you see.)

In terms of working out, I had another day of C25K, followed by elliptical work in order to avoid working my knee too much. It's almost a pity that I had this gym plan because it was so sunny and warm today I should have really run outside. But if our wonderful weather holds I'll be outdoors tomorrow and through the week. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Everyone seems to be doing so well. Way to go Wish-team!!!:goodvibes

I am doing well.....I am happy to have gotten myself under some control. After my marathon training, it was hard to put the fork down and walk away!:confused3 But I am back in the game now, and feel so much better for it!

Stacie: I am sorry to hear about your possible Celiac disease/gluten intolerance, but it will be a good thing to get a plan going to fix the problem. You will probably feel so much better!:goodvibes

Maria: The soup was good. A good choice for dh and I, but the kids only ate one bowl so not the most popular with them. The recipes in the magazine are really good though. I made a zucchini fritata from it too, that was really good.

Big Vic: I hope you are feeling better, and I am sorry you are sick!

Sorry to miss anyone.....hard to keep up with everything!

Oh - I WANT to do the marathon...babysitting is our issue - only one of us can do it...both of us want to do our first marathon next year - but he is definately more ready than me so it is the logical choice that he does it

If we can't work it out for next year - then I will do it in 2010 - and he will do the half...

maybe if we told his parents we were going to leave our kids with some random stranger we met on the internet during the marathon - they would agree to come :rotfl:

OH yea - where in Ohio are you from?

HI guys!!!

Lynnda...Thanks for the info on that! The swimming actually now sounds like it might be possible... The biking...I would definately have to practive that! Maybe in the next year or two...hmmm

Vic...So sorry to hear you are sick!!

The chiro visit did go well. Thanks for asking. They did the electro-therapy on my back, laser on one foot, ultrasound on the other and ultrasound on the hip flexor. The Dr did her "manipulations" and I felt better. I have to continue to stretch and ice that hip flexor. My right leg is shorter than than the left due to a skiing accident (broken leg...). This happens to also be the side of the ailing back and hip flexor. I know the 1/2 inch difference plays into it, but I also think driving so much does. My husband and I work in the same building--nice, we can carpool, but it's a 45-60 min drive EACH way. Normally he drives, but has had a seizure in Oct and Nov and is now on a no-driving restriction. So...that means I'm driving everywhere which I think is impacting my hip flexor. When we were at WDW for marathon weekend, I didn't drive for 4 days and my hip never bothered me... Just a therory...

So..anyway...Last night I did the elliptical and bike for total of 50 mins. Today I will try to do a 30 min Step Class and aquacise.

Keep pushing you guys... You're doing awesome!!!

Oops, I must have missed that in reading your post. Childcare issues. Yeah, tell them that a WISHer volunteers--nothing scarier than us!

I think it's Lara who's from Ohio. But speaking of Ohio, what's the Flying Pig like? We're now living in Pgh, which means Ohio races are a really convenient distance to travel to for races.

Stacie: I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. My DMIL has a shorter leg, and know a little about the problems it causes. And I definitely think driving can affect things; it's a lot of sitting w/ not very good posture (necessarily). WTG on the elliptical/bike! I hope you made it to your class, too.

As for me: Strength training today, another glorious round of lunges, crunches, and squats. I've really been working on my form and breathing, but--and I can't believe I'm about to say this--I might be ready to increase the weight by just a little. Gulp. I've also been making a real effort to "eat clean" as you folks have been recommending. Today, for instance, I had nonfat cottage cheese and an orange as a snack instead of those No-Pudge brownies I made. it's not the same, but at least I could feel almost smug about my (almost non-existent) willpower. We'll see how I do this evening.

I have never done the Flying Pig - but I am this year!!! I hear from everyone here that it is WONDERFUL - Cincinnati is pretty hilly so there is that to deal with - but I went and drove it and it is a pretty gradual climb - the return on the half is awesom b/c you go straight down a huge hill - I figure it will help a ton when I am tired!!

I have a question for all of you...the first mile of any distance I do is pure hell on my shins...horrible pain and every race I think this is it - I can't go another step but almost like clockwork at the first mile marker it goes away never to return - I have tried stretching, different shoes, but it really seems like I might have to just deal with working it out in the first mile - they aren't shin splints b/c they never bother me beyond that first mile or outside of training and races...anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Hey all!
So fun to catch up with all of you! Had a crazy day at work and am just now logging on. Got home and did the WATP 4 mile and now waiting for my DH to finish supper!:thumbsup2
You were right, I am originally from NW Ohio (not too far from Toledo) and then live in Indiana for a while and am now near Pittsburgh. Debra, you are right about Pgh having a Race for the Cure and it's huge. I think they are very close to 40,000 now. We have done it 3 or 4 times, but parking is always such a pain in the city that we do it less and less, but it is a lot of fun. The Great Race is also an awesome 10K and very big as well. That's in the spring. And I hear, too, that the Marathon is supposed to be a go. Also, if you want a great running store, try Fleet Feet in the South Hills area.
Sounds like everybody is on track. Vic, so sorry you are sick. If I make it through this week, I'll believe amazed. 75% of my office patients today had either sinus infections, bronchitis or pneumonia!
Stay healthy and on the move!

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Sitting here at the house trying to get over whatever it is I have. The doc says I have a touch of pneumonia. Not sure how that came to be as I ran Sunday and didn’t have any breathing issues. But, I’ll be a good boy, take my medicine, and get well.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone.

Maria – Hoping the workouts are coming along.

Stacie – Just take your time and you CAN do the Minnie. Glad to hear the Chiro visit went well.

Debra – WTG with the 1 lb loss. Baby steps. WTG with the weight workout.

Beth – I’m having the same problem. Not running as much, but still eating like I am.

Jim – WTG with the 22 miler, and I hear ya about road rash.

Kate – No advice about the shin deal. I would think stretching them as much a possible may be the only thing you can do.

Lara - WTG with the 4 miler!

Y'all take care.

Congrats to all those who have able to get back to healthy eating and are losing weight. Add me to the group who is still eating like she has to run a marathon. WHAT?????? Jeanne, you don't like ice cream? It's one of my biggest downfalls! I have just stayed away from it for the last month. And, the funniest thing is that a serving is 1/2 cup! I never stop at 1/2 a cup! Oh well......sorry I missed the Ben and Jerry's special:mad:

My family's lastest love is sugar-free jello mixed with sugar-free Cool Whip! Man, you would think I made a gormet dessert or something. They all love it! We actually ate that during the Biggest Loser last night.

:lmao: Jim, you just crack me up! I hope you met your immediate goal. But 22 miles, and short? Wow! That gives me something to aspire to once the weather allows me to bring my bike out.

Kate: Hills, huh? They scare me and I haven't really done any training for them...yet. As for your not-shin splints shin problem....:confused3 I wish I could help.

Lara: Thanks for all the good info on races and Fleet Feet. DH just mentioned that we should both get new shoes and I was able to impress him with my local knowledge. Then I told him I got it from a DISer. But so far I've been unable to tempt him to the boards. :sad2: Congrats on the 4 miles!

Vic: Take care of that pneumonia. Wouldn't want you to be feeling down and out for the start of the Miles/Minutes Challenge. (Okay, maybe I would...but a fair "fight" is more fun, don't you think? :cool2: )

Jeanne: You don't like ice cream? Why, that's...practically unAmerican! How do you feel about baseball or apple pie?

Beth: One word: Walgreen's. They have a 2 for 1 special on Ben & Jerry's about every 3 weeks. Don't ask me why I know, especially since I'm not eating any these days...

As for me: Another day for C25K followed by an extended treadmill time. (Very cold & gusty here, bleh.) I decided that I didn't want to lose the base I had for the Goofy so that I would start with C25K plan and then tack on an additional hour of walking. My goal is to run the 5K & then start adding more running, in 10% increments, into that longer period of walking.

So far, so good on the food. It helps--or not--that my throat is a bit sore and so I'm not interested in much other than water & tea. I'm eating properly, but without the regular enthusiasm (or temptation). I am NOT getting sick, though, nope, not happening.

Ice cream usually doesn't tempt me. I will always take the salty over the sweet. I never met a potato chip I didn't love and things like fried chicken and buffalo wings will get me every time. Happy Wednesday everyone!!

Good to see everyone is still here & upright!

Today I ran & went looking for someplace to do some hill work. Ok, the term "hill" being relative here in flat Florida, but I got a bit in.

I was able to do 9 mile in 9:09/mile pace. I was reasonably proud of myself, especially since my last mile was the quickest.

I definitely will NOT be going anywhere near that fast in my marathon in 2 weeks, but still, hey, no chest pain or shortness of breath!

I also hit the gym for the 1st time in about 8 weeks. Some nagging tendinitis issues are still there, but ya' can't be a couch 'tater forever.

Hope everyone does well & stays safe today.

Well, I was down, but not out. Karma bit me, big time. The personal day I took Monday turned into real illness Tuesday. My stomach is still sore, but I'm much better and planning to do my workout, probably a little slower, tomorrow. Good thing today was a rest day:thumbsup2

Anyway, ingesting basically nothing yesterday and not much today should help:rotfl:

Jim -- You sound so positive! Just the happy voice I needed to hear tonight:cloud9:

Julia & Nick's Mom -- Best of luck with the childcare. We left ds home last year with my dad. Everybody thought it was a great deal. He was one spoiled kid when we got home. DS is 10, so he really couldn't miss that much of 4th grade.

Jeanne -- One nice effect of my illness, nothing fried sounds good. I'm hoping it stays that way!

Connie -- I believe Hakuna Matata is going to be doing light housekeeping while Team Ohana is striding along...at least that's the rumor I've heard:cool1:

Debra -- Mind over matter, you can stay well!:rolleyes1

Vic -- Feel better:grouphug:

Beth -- 1/2 a cup is a serving for a 5 year old...unfortunately, it's better if I limit my exposure:guilty:

Lara -- The illness is everywhere!

Ok, guys. It's almost February -- new month, new us!

The only way Team Ohana will be racing away from Hakuna Matata, is in your starship! You will need the extra power of those lithium crystals to get by US!! :rotfl:

Feel better, Maria

Well I got up early this morning to go to the Y and as I was putting on my pants, something in my back went *twinge*.......been there, done that, and I don't like it. Nothing went out, but I still have that "iffy" feeling, if you get my drift. I decided it was probably wise NOT to do spinning class today. So now I am catching up on all the threads and keeping my fingers crossed that my back is OK.

Connie: Congrats on the pound! :thumbsup2 And good luck with the training of OKC. Hakuna Matata is lucky to have you for a captain! Look at how you inspired! your SIL to join you next year. :cool1:

But for the record, Ohana will just use our jump drive & end up light years ahead of Hakuna Matata, so you might as well kick back in your hammocks for a spell...

Kate: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and your DH with the full! But I am curious--why would they choose your sister & cousins over Disney? (Wow, their cousins must be much cooler than mine were.)

Jim: WTG on your 9-miler! You leave me in the dust...but with aspirations. And take care of that tendonitis--you've got an upcoming marathon that I look forward to hearing about.

Jeanne: Oh, captain, my captain! Take care of yourself--I've had that iffy, twinge-y feeling, and it's no fun. We want you happy and healthy.

As for me: I'm on a couple of cold & flu tablets, so I can't feel my sore throat or joints. So I did my XT today and will be headed out here shortly--gee, I think I said that a 1/2 hour ago--for a short, mid-afternoon, clear-my-brain stroll. Nothing too strenous, as I'm still feeling a bit under the weather. But Maria, I think your good thoughts actually helped!

Jeanne: I have been nursing an 'iffy' back for a week.....I know what you mean. I hate that twinge.....maybe next time skip the pants!!:rotfl: Always a dangerous move.....getting dressed! I have my kids trained to pick up all the things I drop.....it's now like an automatic response for them :confused3 My back is always giving me h_ll......if you know what I mean.

Nancy misses me at work today!:lmao: I just got off the phone with her to hear all the updates at work......:rotfl: I don't like being left out of the loop!

I am down 8.5 pounds from Jan 1st! I am hoping that the other .5 pounds comes off overnight! Than I can say I lost 9 pounds in Jan!!!:goodvibes Good for the ego!

I am sticking to my eating plan really well. I did 3 miles on the treadmill last night at 10PM, and really wanted to eat after that but I didn't! Willpower.....can't beat it! ((((don't always have it, but it's nice when I do!))))

Hope everyone else is doing well today.....Jeanne take care of that back, and don't let it get worse!

Beth: so what do we have to do to get you to do a Disney race? If you join us in January then you can pick up your team prize personally. Oops, strike that comment, wrong team! Everyone knows Ohana will win! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Hi Everyone!

Just keepin' up with the thread. I'm scheduled for 50 minutes on the TM tonight. I plan to not go as fast as usual. I'm almost back to normal, but my tummy's still sore.

Connie -- Have you been taking "instigator panda pills"?! In the version of the Lion King we own, Hakuna Matata involves lying in a mud trough lazing the day away...please get going on that right away...:simba:

Kate -- dh and I did the Half this year w/out ds in tow, and it was very liberating. We had things to do at specific times for the race, Pop meet, etc., but we could take our time, venture out when and where we wanted, not worry about going to any particular park...it was great and I highly recommend it for a race weekend. :wizard:

Jeanne -- So glad to hear your feeling better. You are our fearless Capitan!;)

Beth -- Congrats on the fabulous weight loss! Maybe I should start leaving my pants off as well...

Debra -- I'll keep churning with the good thoughts. Keep the medicine going, it does help!:goodvibes

Tomorrow is a new month! DH and I decided to get an early start on Lent and give up fast food starting tomorrow. I am also giving up candy. This should be interesting...:scared1:

Anyone else have anything fun to give up (that is, if you celebrate Lent -- not meant to offend anyone!)

Jeanne: It would be difficult for me to do a Disney race, since when Nancy is off on a 'vacation' (doing 26.2 miles is not a real vacation!) I have to work! We don't take off at the same time except when we go to our national conference every couple of years. Nancy and I would have a hard time arranging time off of work before and after the weekend event. ToT was the one I envied, since it was a little different being at night!

Yes, I am doing Lehigh Valley this year. Seems to be the one I return to each year!

Yeah, but I still don't understand how Simba left to return to the Pride Lands while it was still dark and Rafiki tells the others in the morning where Simba has gone; notwithstanding this, the short legged warthog and the meerkat arrive at the same time as the full grown, running through the night lion. I don't think Simba would have beaten the sweepers.

Deekaypee, Gosh I hope you are feeling better! Nasty stuff that flu!

Jeanne: Are you feeling better?

Kate: DVC, huh? Will you adopt me?

Maria: Take it easy with the tummy. Nothing's worse than feeling sore in the core! I'm in awe that you're starting Lent early. DH (and me by association) are making our Fat Tuesday paczki-sampling plans! Diet or no diet--or should I say diet & no willpower!

Connie: Ah, the sweet delusions of the Hakuna Matata team. No worries from them! I do have to ask, though, did the biscuits/shrimp taste like chicken?

Bill: I'll also ask about the eating clean, and hope you're doing well on all accounts. Remember, you're one of our head Lean Meaners! :worship:

As for me: Today was a rough eating day. I took the car to our new mechanics, a Firestone next to a mall. The job should have only take a couple of hours, tops, but one thing let to another...and 7+ hours later I was still in the mall. (Long, expensive story.)

Malls & me--not a good combination for extended periods of time. I ate Subway for lunch (veggie delite, because vegetarians are delightful), apple slices & water. Not exciting, but could be worse. But as the hours rolled on and on, there was a Starbucks coffee & a chocolate croissant and a SoyJoy bar to tide me over. To my credit, I refused to eat lunch AND dinner there, hence the SoyGen bar. I also managed to walk 4+ miles in the mall, which was on top of my 2 hour/9 mile workout before I took the car in. (The sad thing is, I had enough time to walk much more than that, but my workload wouldn't permit it & my laptop was too heavy.)

On the bright side, I logged slightly over 13 miles & several hours for Team Ohana & worked off the guilt of the chocolate croissant. Plus, I was too tired to get persnickety with the mechanics.

Eating clean takes practice and it sounds like you are off to a good start. But you are mistaken about a couple of pounds are not worth mentioning!!!! Losing any pounds is worth mentioning! A pound is approcimately 3500 calories, it takes work and discipline to get rid of that!

Congratulations!

Good morning Lean Team. Best of luck this weekend.

**Connie** My b-day was last weekend. Thus, I now get to move up an age group in those events that use 5 year groupings, although I'm not sure if its really "moving" when I've yet to compete in an event.

Thanks for the kind words as to the weight lose, but keep in mind that at my current size, I can "drop" a couple of pounds on the scale by skipping a couple of liters of water one day. As you point out, the key is to lose/burn the fat.

Bill, I like the idea of setting a monthly goal. I know you can do it, as you are aware of what it takes & have realistic expectations. :thumbsup2

I raised the idea of doing that over in the Team Ohana thread; I'm hoping Ohana will help me stay focused and accountable not only for the miles/minutes, but for my other fitness/lifestyle goals. By breaking it down into the weekly miles/minutes & by what I hope to accomplish by month's end, I think I'll be more likely to hit my targets.

So, I'll ride on your coattails here, and add my own daily/weekly/monthly goals that I see as Lean Meaner focused.

Daily:

Consistently drink 55-75 oz. water
Stay within my caloric & nutritional recommendations (without obsessing about the numbers as opposed to the balance)
Completed 60 minutes of exercise

Weekly:

Increase my protein intake before LRs
Introduce a flexibility component into my XT: 2x week
Lose one pound

Monthly:
By the end of the month, I plan to have

Lessened the amount refined carbs in my diet, esp. sugars
Strengthened my core: 50 crunches/nightly
Lost four pounds

Maria – Best of luck to you Lent. A twofer that sounds tough!

Debra - Car problems that stinks! Nice job on turning the time into miles though! And I love your focused goals!

Bill – Hey bud a couple pounds is definitely worth mentioning! Just think it could have been the other way. Loosing anything means your on the right track!

Vic – Take care and finish those antibiotics!

I'm new here and just jumping in everywhere. But, I read this and the comments that followed and thought I'd share my friends analogy. When I have a week that is less than ideal and have complained upon "only" a pound she tells me to think of it like sticks of butter. She'll say, "That's like 4 sticks of butter off your (insert any body part or parts)" and it makes me feel sooooo much better. Plus in adds a little humor into the weight loss game. However, after reading Bill's posts I'm a little nervous about sharing my butter analogy. :goodvibes

Thanks so much for the kind words. I appreciate it! Yesterday was a BIG challenge for me. The family all got Cold Stone Creamery ice cream, and I was dying for some! I just can't justify it though.....I have been too good to blow it on ice cream.......but I thought of you, Jeanne! Food can rule my life sometimes......:confused3

Vic: Take all of those antibiotics! Get well, and back to your 'regularily scheduled' activities!

First of all, condolences to Bill....

Thanks to everyone for their concern about my back. Over the weekend, it turned more into sciatica and ended up going all down my leg, so I was starting to get worried. I woke up this morning and everything seems fine. (fingers crossed) This sounds unbelieveable, but I decided to get back into swimming last week (I am NOT a swimmer, by any means!) I did a 500 and it was very hard for me. I must have pulled something during my flutter kick and that's how it happened. You know how it is when you suddenly start to use old unused body parts!

Debra: you are the woman! Wow, I love the way you are so organized with your goals...and so happy we have someone like you on team Ohana to whip us all into shape. :thumbsup2

Congrats to everyone who was really good during the Superbowl (especially Beth with the ice cream!)
And encouragement to all of those (myself included) who weren't. It's a new day and a new week, so let's just move forward and eat healthy. Sometimes it's good thing when I've been naughty, because it gets all the bad cravings out of my system.

I decided I needed new recipes......always helps me when things get tough! Off to Border's with a coupon yesterday! Got myself a new low carb cookbook, which looks promising! I like that it has real food.......ingredients you can get at the grocery store. Many low carb recipes used to have me running to the Health Food store.

Already made the low carb pancakes for breakfast and they were very good!:thumbsup2

I have been trying to be more organized with dinners.....with only one shopping trip a week. I am into week #2 with a menu and one trip. Last week went pretty well, with only one extra stop for milk!

We don't eat out much anymore......we gave up fast food two years ago. We only do fast food once a month or less......it's a good thing, but that means that I have to make dinner every day!:confused3 And with me on low carb, and the rest of the family not.....sometimes it's difficult menu planning! I think it will end up saving me money with only 1 grocery trip a week, though!

I am still heading to my goal of 7 pounds this month! Wish me luck!:thumbsup2

I headed out to the mall today and while I was waiting I put in a solid hour mall walking. Felt good to be out doing something.

Oooh, I love the loose pants test. It makes me feel much better than the scale in some ways. I also have to admit that the mall walking I did on Friday was interesting because I don't normally do that. A different kind of visual interest, you know. Of course, I know I was visual interest for some folks because of my pseudo race-walking. I received a few pointed stares. Hey, don't nosh on your pretzels and sodas and then laugh at me because of my "dewy complexion."

Hey all - I love the goals everyone is setting...

Debra has inspired me on the water intake for a goal!!

I went out for a mile today...I was hoping to begin a walk run plan since my knee surgety and ankle tendon strain have stopped that - looks like I might be a walker a bit longer - my knee started killing me...I couldn't go any further b/c I started coughing - I didn't want to irritate my bronchitis...

I've really found the water intake has made such a big difference in my training--and, believe it or not, it's one of my more challenging goals. Good luck with yours.

Hey, nothing wrong with walking, especially if it keeps you injury-free. Happy and healthy is the goal, right? And a mile is not just a miles, it's approximately 2000 steps! Not too shabby, eh?

Debra, I'm wondering about your increase of protein before LRs. I always thought it was protein after LRs and lighter fare before. I guess I'm wondering and want to know if it works for you.

Yeah, weird isn't it? I know the standard advice is protein afterwards to build up the muscles. But I find I do much better with overall energy and, I don't know, just a sense of well-being if I have a heavier protein load the night before a LR (or R/W as my case is, at this point) and a stronger balance of carbs/protein for breakfast.

But there are a couple of factors that might explain why this works for me. 1) As I noted, I'm currently a R/W with intervals just slightly edging over into the R part. I'm working on running more, so my diet might shift as my workout does. 2) I'm slow as molasses--mmm, molasses--and I tend to work out for hours at a time when I'm healthy. (Kind of to offset the slow part, I guess.) During training for the Goofy, I'd be on the road through 2 meals. 3) I'm a vegetarian, and my protein intake is always at the low end of normal. I think this is the biggest factor.

But one last thing worth noting: my DH, who is a middle-of-the-pack runner, and does distance, also prefers more protein before the LRs. He's not a vegetarian, but eats a mostly vegetarian diet at home. So it might be a vegetarian thing.

Tracey: Welcome & thanks for the analogy. I thought is was very humorous and appropriate--even if it did make me want to bake. I love butter, just not on my body parts. (There's a risque joke in there somewhere.) Anyway, I hope you join us Lean Meaners for support and motivation!

Beth: You're doing so well. You succeeded in your challenge! I don't know if you can say food runs your life if you resisted the Cold Stone Creamery, though. It sounds like you're just being conscious of the choices you're making. You rock! :worship:

Oh, and I have to agree with you that planning out a week's menu is not only better for us diet-wise, but saves money. And I hate to say this, but in the long run, it allows me to use less brain power. I hate sitting down on Friday night & planning the week's menu, but when Wednesday rolls around and I'm out of creative cooking idea--well, I don't need them. I've got a weekly menu. If you want to share the banana nut muffin recipe, I'd love to try it!

Maria: "There is no joy in Mudville." Hah! I thought I was the only one who ever said that! It seems kind of appropriate today, what with the Superbowl and all. Still, your use of that phrase just made my day. I hope your breakfast and lunch were satisfying, almost as satisfying as the TM workout!

Connie: One day in months~ :faint: For me it's like once a week. You give me something to aim for! Mostly I'm just trying to balance out the diet with the exercise, getting some kind of caloric detente.

Jeanne: I hope your back is continuing to feel fine. I'm not that familiar with sciatica, so I read a little about it. (What did I ever do without Google?) Wow, that sounds so painful and even debilitating. You take it easy with the exercising! And I agree with you regarding the Superbowl indulgences (I didn't have any, but that's another story): new day, new week! Let's look forward, folks!

As for me: Well, my illness stayed with me over the weekend. I lightened my workout load and only did XT on Saturday & Sunday, but I was feeling pretty awful on Sunday. I cancelled our Superbowl plans & slept through part of the game--didn't even see the end.

Sunday night/Monday morning the fever finally broke, and I got that temporary surge of energy you get after having been ill. You know the kind: you suddenly feel almost normal, so you *think* you can do anything. So I head for the gym today to run. :sad2: I made it a mile before I realized I was not entirely recovered. It's still too hard to breathe. So I did more XT, getting easy miles in & working up way too much of a sweat for the effort I put out. But I left the gym feeling better than when I entered it, a first in 3 days!

And in the other big news: I'm down another pound. Apparently, a cold doesn't effect my appetite but neither did it interfere with my pound-per-week schedule. Small losses equal big gains in my household! :cool1:

Debra: I will certainly share my recipe.....but, they are low carb....I don't know what plan you are following. Low carb takes a little getting used to (((or not, like my dh says!:confused3 ))))):rotfl:

Low carb banana nut muffins (George Stella's Living Low Carb cookbook):

2 tablespoons wheat bran
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon soy flour
1/2 cup Splenda
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 large eggs
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup club soda
1 1/2 teaspoons banana extract
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (or macadamia nuts)

Spray muffin tin with cooking spray. Mix bran with 1 tablespoon soy flour and evenly sprinkle the pan with the mixture (this will prevent muffins from sticking)

Wisk all remaining ingredients together except nuts. Fold in nuts. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full. Bake 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.

If using 12 muffin tin, muffins will be 4 carbs a piece.

Well, I'm reevaluating my diet. I'm just not good with too many grains in my diet. I thought with the marathon training and all it would work itself out but it doesn't seem to be working. And I think some of it is mental.
I think eating grains make me want to eat more for some reason. I need to find something and stick to it.
So here is my "low" carb plan for training.
100g carbs (but these come from 1 serving fruit, 1 serving beans, the rest veggies NO GRAINS)
120g lean protein
60-70 g healthy fat (any added fat comes from olive oil)

That's around 1500 calories.
So we'll see how it works out.
Today was elliptical 45 mins.
Tomorrow I run again!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Beth: Thanks a lot for the recipe; they sound really good. Soy flour, huh? I'm not following a low-carb diet, per se, but I don't mind low-carb foods. And ideally, I'd like to lessen my carb intake. And as long as the food is vegetarian, I'm pretty democratic in my tastes. I might try these next weekend.

Vic: It's good to hear you're on the mend. Your posts on the weekly thread sound like the Vic I'm used to reading/hearing from!

Jeanne: It's not that you're too lazy to bake, it's that you're too busy earning miles and minutes for Ohana!

Texa: I do think grains can increase one's hunger--it seems to happen to me at times. Wow, that's a lot of protein. How do you get that much in? (I'm a veggie, so I always struggle with protein.) Good work with the elliptical & have fun running tomorrow!

Bill: Haven't seen you hear in a couple of days. Hope you're doing well!

As for me: Nothing really new to report. I did 60 minutes of strength/flexibility training today, am on schedule for completing my water intake goal, and took a nice nap early this evening. My appetite has been dead for the past couple of days, so it's actually been a struggle to meet my nutritional goals. I'm hoping everything will be in better balance tomorrow, as I'm feeling pretty good right now--a little tired, but not exhausted.

I hope everyone has a good evening and even better tomorrow!

I don't do grains well, either. I think some bodies prefer grains, others vegetables and some of us are just plain carnivores! :simba: grrrrrrrr I think we have to take the nutrition advice and then tweek it to fit our own needs. I don't do much grain, I prefer the starchy vegetables instead. And no white food!

I am so glad to hear you are feeling better, Vic!

I'm still here *Connie*, just haven't been posting as not much to say, other than "I am the Procrastinator Man."

Actually I did pretty good through the weekend - including (relatively speaking) the Super Bowl party. Unfortunately, its been raining up here the past few days and my back has been back at it. (I do apologize to my grandparents now in my prayers for when I used to give them a hard time as a kid when they could predict the whether with their bones/joints. My kids think its pretty cool I can predict rain/snow with my arthritis/joints more accurately than those on TV. WISH I felt the same way.)

Good Morning!

How is everyone? I did half an hour on the bike last night, 7 miles. It felt pretty good for a change, so maybe I'm finally getting used to that bike seat.;)

Today is my rest day, so I'm going to do free weights. I'll be working on those after church tonight. My ds10 thinks Ash Wednesday should fall on the weekend, because it's very inconvenient and messing up his tv schedule...:rolleyes1 He only gets an hour a day on weekdays, and he'll miss it tonight. I think he'll live:goodvibes

Bill -- So glad to hear from you! I wish the rain would stop, too!

Connie -- I think I'm a sugarvore!:rotfl2:

Debra -- I don't know how you killed your appetite, but sign me up, that sounds like a good diet strategy to me!popcorn::

Texa -- Good luck with tweaking your diet. It's hard to find what works for each person. I'll let you know if I ever get there:sad2:

Vic -- Howdy! How are you feeling?:wizard:

Beth -- I admire you for doing the low carb. Your muffins do sound yummy!:goodvibes

Beth - I loved low carb and the appetite suppresant that came with it! Mmmm real ranch dressing was one of the best perks. Unfortunately it doesn't work well with marathon training, for me anyway. I've actually come across people that do real well on it because their body is accustomed to being in fat burning mode instead of carb burning mode. Great job.

Connie - Don't you with what we liked to eat and what our bodies like to eat would get together and agree on something? I love grains, not just the taste but the convenience of throwing together a sandwhich or something, but I've gotten a bunch of those simply steamers and chicken breasts and eat those.

Dekaypee - I use fitday to figure out my calories and grams and it includes EVERYTHING in the count, including the protein count in say spinach or yams, so it adds up pretty easy!

TO everyone else. I hope whatever you're doing is working! Have a great day!

Oh man, I would love to eat soup and sandwiches at EVERY meal. But I can't. :sad2: Oh well, I am adapting as I go along and it really has made a huge diffference. Oddly enough, it took me forever to figure this out, if my DH hadn't been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, I might still be eating sandwiches, baked potatoes, pasta, and all those wonderful yummy things and wondering why it wasn't working very well!!! It's kinda nice to find someone else in the world who has a grain problem. Oh, and DH is beating the diabetes!

You guys are crankin' over here! I'm still seeing my nutritionist and I have to say, she's always got something else for me to try. :thumbsup2 This week she'd like for me to focus on the hunger awareness scale -- She recommends it because it's something I can do even if I find myself in a situation where the healthiest food isn't available. The idea is that if you slow down and only eat to satisfy hunger -- not hurt, or boredom, or anxiety, or anything else -- that you can get a grip on portion size and lose weight without weighing and measuring. It's also a good "getting back on track" step for me because it seems lack of time is always an issue -- time to plan meals, time to weigh and measure, time to record everything I eat, time to shop for produce, and time to get my exercise in -- those times are tough to squeeze in while mothering on-the-go teens and working at a demanding job.

So that's my contribution for this week! It's good to have you guys to inspire me!

Good evening, Lean Meaners! I'm running behind schedule tonight & need to get to bed soon or there will be another snack in my near future.

Maria: Sugarvore! Hah!

Texa: Thanks for the info. I use SP for tracking and I still fall short on protein. blame grains (and my sweet tooth).

Tracey: 17 oz/15%, really? I knew there was a reason I should drink more! Why didn't I learn this stuff in school?

Kim: Welcome! 30-40 pounds is totally doable. When I first lost my 50 pounds, I did it in 6 months. Of course, I did say "the first time..." Some of it found me again! :lmao:

Vic: While I'm glad you're feeling better, I'm sure the triple Ds would feel better if you spent one more day in recovery--just to be sure.

Wendy: Thanks for the info on the hunger awareness scale. The problem with me is that I'm much more attuned to my boredom, anxiety, etc., scales than my hunger ones! I completely understand the time issue, too. If we could only squeeze out more time in a day, like juice out of a lemon!

As for me: Right now, I'm experiencing diet fatigue. I'm not tired of being on a restricted amount of calories, I'm just bored with my diet. Meh. I'm a pretty horrible cook (but a great baker, and therein lies part my problem). Connie, if given an opportunity I will eat the same thing every meal--and I do. I eat tons of soups, for instance. Establishing and sticking with variety is one of the holy grails of my overall lifestyle change. You'd think diet fatigue would kill my appetitite, but noooooo. It just makes me pay less attention to what I'm eating.

You guys are all doing so awesome!!

The weather sucks right now...rain, more rain oh and how about a little more...it has left me unmotivated and crabby!!!

something great happened today though...the doctor told me in October that my DD need to even out her height and weight a little bit - she doesn't look heavy and he was surprised to see how unmatched they were - I wish I could hide my fat like she does ;) anyway - we weighed her tonight and I did a check of her ratio and it is more in balance!!! I refused to put her on a diet so we have been focusing on what is healthy and what is not...she has done really well with cutting back on her snacking and sugar intake -

it also reminded me of why I really need to be healthy - I want to be a good example for my kids and up until now I have been a good example of what not to do!!

Hi ya guys!!! We're back from WDW now and work has been sooo hectic!! I'm not doing too good on my weight loss. Gained 2 lbs at Disney so I was up for the Biggest Loser weigh-in... ugh! I have a chart where I am tracking my weight. I have two lines. One for the current, weekly weight and one is the "glide-path"--where I should be to stay on track of 1lb per week until the Minnie. I am currently 2.4lbs above plan. I am just sooo hungry this week too. All I want is JUNK! I've got to get focused!

Hope you guys are doing better than me!!! Keep up the good work!

Absolutely!!!:cool1: So wonderful for your kiddo. We all know it's not easy.
There was an awesome article in Runners World a few months back. It was titled "Pretty Strong". A mom wrote that she runs to show her girls that she is strong and proud of her accomplishments. She writes that she is more beautiful red, sweaty, and crossing the finish line than she ever was standing on the side-lines cheering people in (make-up on). I keep it on my fridge as a good reminder. April will be the first time that I run in a 5k with my son---it will also be the first time that I'm not there to cheer him in (he's an amazing front of the packer:love: ). I told him last night that I was a little sad about that---he told me, that he will be proud to cheer me in. Tears in my eyes......that's why I'm doing what I'm doing.

Kate: :cool1: for your daughter! It already sounds like you're setting a good example for her eating without reinforcing that diet mindset. That's so important, IMO, especially for young girls growing up in our media culture. And you're making healthy choices for you, too, so pat yourself on the back!

Stacie: Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed WDW. (As if :rotfl:) I'm sure you can get back on track with the Minnie as a goal! Is your work hectic AND stressful? I often find that when I'm pressed for time and stressed out, I automatically reach for the junk. And eating junnk food just makes me want to eat more junk food. Odd, that. Anyway, I hope you're having a Lean Meaner day!

Tracey: What a wonderful story! Your son is a real sweetheart. And he sounds like he's got a great mom. I just know you'll enjoy your 5K with such support! :thumbsup2

As for me: Tonight I made some No Pudge brownies for my DH, my compromise to my usual double-fudge brownies. I'm taking no chances--if I fall to temptation, I want to at least be eating something under 200 calories. So far, though, I've avoided licking the bowl. Tonight is spinach quiche, which I'm hoping will fill me out. But darn it all, the house smells like chocolate!

Good Morning!

Even though I really didn't want to by the time I got to it, I did my hour on the TM last night. I enjoyed being there, I just hated starting so late. Anyway, this is the first week in a long time where I did all my scheduled workouts, even adding weights. I owe it all to Dave's challenge, I don't want to let my team down, and I didn't have a good excuse, so I did my workouts!:goodvibes

My eating this week has been a little scary, I'm still adjusting to working out more. Next week will be better overall as I get the eating in line with the exercise. It's hard for me to get everything right at once, so I'm just going to focus on the workouts, and I know the food will come. popcorn::

Connie -- dh was just saying to me that all the other kids in ds's class have money to buy junk at lunch every day. We give him $1 once or twice a week, and I think that's plenty. He always has a treat in his lunch, I don't think he needs to buy extra candy every day. :confused3

Minnie --:yay: It sounds like you are doing great!

Debra -- You are a font of willpower, there's no way I could bake brownies and not eat one!

JustSmile -- What a great activity for your family! It's so great you can get out there and do it, too!:woohoo:

Stacie -- Welcome Back! I hope your trip was magical!:wizard:

Kate -- I'm so glad to hear your daughter is doing well! You are right,we have to take care of ourselves so our kids can do as we say and we do!:)

Connie -- Wait, you want me to stop and think before I eat?!:rotfl2: Excellent advice!

Vic -- DS also thinks church should be in the afternoons, so it doesn't interfere with his cartoons...but we can't have church during football games, the pews would be empty!:lmao:

Beth -- I always seem to gain when I start to train, and then I lose, and then I just stay the same. I'm sure it has to do with my poor nutrition, so I've got to get that in order:thumbsup2

Good morning Lean Meaners!!:goodvibes

How's it going with everyone? I am doing well. I am now officially down 10.2 pounds for the year, and very happy with that. The best part is that I feel good, in a groove, and have (((((temporarily, of course))))) overcome the 'hunger' monster. Low carb is good for that! It took awhile though, but I actually forgot to eat breakfast yesterday b/c I really wasn't hungry! :confused3 That made me feel good that food didn't manipulize my thoughts for every second of the day!:goodvibes

I also got a good five miles in yesterday on the dreadmill, and didn't feel like road kill! Yeah! I did push it at the end to get all five miles in for the 60 minutes.

Connie: I actually have been pretty proud of ds #1 for school lunches. He was going through alot of money, so we had to get a print out of what he is eating. I was pretty sure it would be snacks and ice cream, but it turned out it WATER! It's not included with lunch, so he would get a bottle everyday, and it added up! But, that's ok with me......I was proud that it wasn't a bunch of crappy food!

Debra: Good job with the will power! I am using it right now too......I had to make a batch of cookies for my sister! Boy, do they smell good!

Vic: I am glad you seem to be feeling better......now, back to the regularily scheduled exercise!

Beth: congrats on the weight loss! Over 10 pounds is quite significant....WTG, girl!

Debra (and Beth): great job on the willpower. It's so hard to resist something when the aroma is all around you. But you did it, so be proud!

Vic: glad you're feeling better

Maria: Good job for exercising when you really didn't want to. That says alot for your determination. (So glad you're on my team!)

And oh gosh, there are so many other people doing well and making good choices....congrats to you all! Keep up the good work.

I think I may have finally found my grove this week. I worked out really hard and didn't want to blow it so I have been really good about eating right. I finally have all the bad stuff out of my house so it should be a little easier to resist temptation. It seems like after the marathon, I just kept rewarding myself for doing well, but it wasn't a very healthy reward! That's all old stuff now, so it's time to get back on track.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a great Saturday.

Nothing significant to report from me. However, I did get a new pair of running shoes (Asics 2130). I’ll christen them tomorrow.

Wendy – Hey!

Debra – I hear you about being bored with your diet as I eat pretty much the same thing everyday too.

Kate – Congrats to your DD, and to you! :thumbsup2

Stacie – Welcome back! Gaining weight at WDW is authorized.

Tracey – Hey!

Minnie – Feeling pretty good, thanks! Keep it up with your healthy eating. :thumbsup2

Connie – What time is dinner?

Maria – WTG with the TM workout. :thumbsup2 A youngun has to have his priorities. :rolleyes1

Good morning! It's cold, with snow flakes here and there so I kept the exercise indoors on the dreadmill (again.... ) I was much braver last winter.....I was outdoors no matter what, cold, rain, snow etc......This year I seem to be a whimp. :confused3 But, I did get 5 miles in under 60:00! Yipee for that!

Jeanne: I know all about that 'reward' system with food. I tend to do that too, hence the 25 pound weight gain during marathon training. It's hard to shake that mentality. I always felt that I 'deserved' it! :confused3 It didn't lead me down a good road. Good for you that you are back on track!:cheer2:

Vic: I love having new shoes.....have a good time 'breaking' them in!

To everyone else......keep steady and watch your diet!!!:yay:

Minnie, Maria, Beth, Jeanne: Yeah, about those No-Pudge Brownies and the wilpower....um, yeah. That's why I made the lo-cal version, because I don't have any! It helps minimize the damage. Usually I made the goodies & DH carts them off to work so I can't be tempted. I made the mistake of making them for the weekend, so I can't say I haven't had one. I have, and a content. But I'm not nearly as strong-willed as you all encourage me to be! Thanks, though, for sending positive thoughts my way; it made them easier to resist overall & helped me limit myself.

Minnie: Congrats on 3 weeks. That's quite an accomplishment, esp. when you add your work on the dreadmill to that.

Connie: I'm coming over to your house for samples! I envy good cooks who can make even tried-and-true recipes taste like new. That would help my diet fatigue. I get that talent in theory--as I said, I love to bake--but in practice....I see cooking as a very mysterious art, baking as a science. I'm no artist. I'll just keep paying attention to what you're making & if it's vegetarian and easy, bug you for the recipe, okay? :)

Maria: I'm so proud of you, doing your time on the TM so late at night. I'm glad you felt better for having done it, too, but just know you could never let your team down! Eating is what I struggle with all the time; I just find it easier (given my schedule and all) to add more workout time and avoid addressing the food/nutrition issues. Meh.

Beth: Over 10 pounds! :cheer2: And you've not battling the hunger monster. Whoo-hoo! So you're saying this banana doesn't tempt you? You're stronger with your cookies than I ended up being with the brownies. Good for you! And a great job with the 5 miles on the TM--I have to admit that the TM hasn't been as appealing to me since the marathon, but it's the reliable option right now because of this wonky weather.

Jeanne: Good job with getting into the groove. WTG! Only problem is that I know have that song "Shake Your Groove Thing" stuck in my head. :dance3: Maybe I'll do a little dance in your honor!

Vic: I'm glad you're feeling well enough to christen your new shoes! That means you're getting back on track! Yea!

Bill: Where are you, man? We miss you!

As for me: Despite the mishap with the brownie, I've been keeping a pretty tight watch on the food. I've not tamed my hunger monster yet, but she's whimpering now more than roaring.

I've also just read Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, which makes some really thoughtful claims about nutrionism--has anyone read it. Anyway, I'm trying to process his claims in light of how I eat. To some extent it reminds me of what some of you have said about eating clean. I'm not sure exactly what I'll do yet, and want to do so more reading, but at least the book has me closely reading food labels. (I'm appalled at what's in my yogurt!)

Oh no!!! Debra, what's in my yogurt? :scared1: I am such a yogurt freak. Should I be worried, or cutting back? The No-Pudge brownies sound yummy, they're a mix right? I made a gooey-butter cake at the request of my kiddos. I thought I could resist. I couldn't:confused3 , but that's okay. I sat with my little piece of cake and said, "Yum" after every single bite. Congratulations to all of you on your strong will-power.
Wow, you guys are all doing fantastic on keeping up with your goals and keeping up on the treadmill. I'm surprised at how much I love running outside. It gets a little dreary for me on the treadmill in the basement. Yesterday, it was 54 degrees here in the morning and by evening it had dropped to 13! Thank goodness I got outside for 3 miles in the morning. Tomorrow it's back on the treadmill. I took a true rest day today:) it was awesome. Take care all and stay strong.

It is just enough chocolate kick with the caffeine that I feel like I am cheating. This is also a better choice if you are on the go (i.e. shopping) and get that craving too. Good morning Lean Meaners!

I'm officially off of the antibiotics. WooHoo!

I'm scheduled for a 1/2 marathon (Seaside, FL) in three weeks. So, tonight we will get back at it. It's time to kick butt and take names. :thumbsup2

Kim - Hope you get to feeling better.

Everyone - Keep up the great work.

Debra - I'm a daily yogurt eater. Do I need to be worried? I need that bacteria to maintain the beneficial flora in my intestinal tract. Of course, whenever I share my flora with the DW she doesn't see the benefit. :confused3 :lmao: I blame it on the dogs anyways. :rolleyes1

As gross as it may seem, I actually use my left over coffee from morning. I get done work, go run/workout however, come in and pop the coffee, skim milk, half packet of sugarfree cocoa in a cup, in the micro, go change my clothes and voila!! Instant treatie. I am not a big instant coffee fan but it would probably work. Of course, I am not a big rewarmed coffee fan either but we gotta do what we gotta do!!!!

Jeanne, sometimes when I am out and know I will be out for awhile and have my DD13 with me, I go to a Dunkin Donuts or Tim Hortons and buy a medium decaf coffee and a medium hot chocolate with an extra cup. She and I split the two between us and both have a treat. It is more sugar and calories but sometimes I just need a boost!!! :goodvibes

Good Afternoon Lean Meaners!

Saturday I did my long walk, yesterday I did weights, and today I'll be back on the TM for an hour. This is the most consistent I've been in months, and it's all due to WWDave's game. :goodvibes

My diet is pretty scary -- I meant to turn it around today, and then I had pad thai for lunch. On the bright side I am very full, and I know we're having chicken for dinner, so I'll have two healthy meals. Oops. Forgot about that donut for breakfast. Make that 1 healthy meal...I'm beginning to see where I'm going wrong. I have to get back to writing everything down. That helps me focus on better choices.

Beth -- I don't do coffee either. I love hot tea, especially vanilla chai. It's full of sugary goodness, so I limit myself to one a week.

Vic -- I have yogurt every day for breakfast. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong! :confused3

Lisa -- I'm all for a little mid-day boost. I make a giant mug of tea (32 oz.) in the morning, and then if I've been drinking like I should, I get another one in the afternoon with fruit and a 100 cal. pack of cookies.:lovestruc

Connie -- Yep, I'm regretting giving up candy for Lent right about now. I could go for one little Dove square...:guilty:

Stacie -- So since I gave up the candy I've been getting my chocolate in 100 cal packs, and Ding Dongs. Only 180 calories if you just eat one, and no trans fats!:rotfl2: Yep, I'm pretending that's healthy.

Kim -- Here's hoping you feel better soon, we miss you're smiling face!:goodvibes

Kate -- If I don't allow myself little treats, I eventually go crazy and eat way too much of something I shouldn't. Having a portioned amount that you savor is a sound strategy!:thumbsup2

Debra -- Ok, you have to share with the yogurt. Are we all being led down a primrose path?pirate:

Bill -- How are you doing? I hope you're feeling fit as a fiddle!

I guess I need a "food" challenge to match the miles/hours challenge. Then I might be able to put it all together!

Everyone have a great, losing (and active) day!

First, yes on the No-Pudge. It's a mix. I don't normally make mixes as I prefer baking. The theory was that doing so would prevent me from eating brownies. Yeah, it's all a good, working theory until 9 at night.

Okay, maybe I should take down my "appalled" statement, just a bit. (Although that's really how I felt when first reading the ingredients.) It's just that, silly me, I thought most yogurts would contain milk and active yogurt cultures and that's about it, except for whatever flavoring/fruit might be added. I had no idea that so many brands add pectin (thickening agent) and sugars to their yogurts. Now, plain yogurts might only add pectin, but it depends on the brand.

Here's an example of what I mean, using Dannon as a readily accessible brand.

Dannon All Natural Lowfat Yogurt: Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, pectin. Contains active yogurt cultures including L. acidophilus.

Okay, that doesn't sound too bad, even though I didn't expect pectin. Look what happens if you eat the vanilla version of the same brand.

Dannon All Natural Lowfat Vanilla Yogurt: Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, sugar, natural vanilla flavor, pectin. Contains active yogurt cultures including L. acidophilus.

Now I've added not just natural vanilla flavor (which I would have guessed), but additional sugar (which I would not have guessed). I can live with it, but it's irritating.

But look what happens when you move outside the all natural yogurt & look at the ingredients list for Dannon's other products.

Dannon's Activia (Vanilla): CULTURED GRADE A REDUCED FAT MILK, FRUCTOSE SYRUP, SUGAR, CONTAINS LESS THAN 1% OF FRUCTOSE, WHEY PROTEIN CONTENTRATE, CORN STARCH, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, KOSHER GELATIN, NATURAL VANILLA FLAVOR, SODIUM CITRATE, MALIC ACID.

Dannon's Fruit on the Bottom (Mixed Berries): Cultured grade A lowfat milk, strawberries, fructose syrup, sugar, blueberries, high fructose corn syrup, blackberries, contains less than 1% of modified corn starch, raspberries, pectin, kosher gelatin, natural flavor, sodium phosphate, malic acid, elderberry juice concentrate (for color), calcium phosphate. Contains active yogurt cultures including L. acidophilus.

Dannon Fruit Blend Yogurt (Strawberry & Peach): Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, sugar, peaches, high fructose corn syrup, fructose syrup, modified corn starch, whey protein concentrate, contains less than 1% of natural flavor, Kosher gelatin, citric acid, pectin, sodium citrate, annatto extract (for color), potassium sorbate (to maintain freshness), malic acid, tricalcium phosphate, Red 40. Contains active yogurt culture.

Dannon Light & Fit Nonfat Yogurt (Vanilla): NONFAT YOGURT [CULTURED GRADE A NON FAT MILK, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, KOSHER GELATIN, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, VITAMIN D3], WATER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 1% OF MODIFIED CORN STARCH, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SUCRALOSE, POTASSIUM SORBATE (TO MAINTAIN FRESHNESS), CITRIC ACID, ANNATTO EXTRACT (FOR COLOR), CARAMEL COLOR SODIUM CITRATE

I could go on, but you get the point. These good-for-you yogurts are chock full of things that make the yogurt more palatable, either in appearance or to my sweet taste buds. But they don't make it better for you and, in fact, some of the ingredients are bad for you. One of the bits of advice that Michael Pollan gives, the author whose In Defense of Food got me reading my yogurt label, is "Avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable, c) more than five in number, or that include d) high-fructose corn syrup." And see how many of those products contain high-fructose corn syrup? ::headache:

Oh, and it's not just Dannon, btw. I checked out labels for a variety of yogurts, including organic yogurts. Most of them contain sweeteners and thickeners that aren't necessary; sure, the higher-end, organic products might use can sugar instead of corn syrup, but.... The exceptions I've found so far are (predictably) Greek yogurt and a brand called Seven Stars. Unfortunately, both brands are more expensive than Dannon All Natural Plain yogurt, expecially considering how much of it DH and I eat. (6-7 days a week.) So for right now we're eating Dannon All Natural but are thinking about making our own yogurt.

Wow, sorry about the long post & potential soap-box moment, but I guess I was just surprised. I should know better, of course, but somehow yogurt just escaped my label-reading attention. Realizing just how much sugar is in my yogurt left a bad taste in my mouth--not literally, which is why I loved the fruit-flavored stuff so darn much. Learning what was really in my yogurt reminded me of my reaction when I learned that a lot of really good cheese has animal rennet in it--as a vegetarian I was appalled. (Apparently, that happens to me a lot! :rotfl:)

Is everyone staying warm...

I would imagine trying to stay warm in this FREEZING weather would be burning some calories right?

I love all your tips for chocolate cravings...I guess a double hot fudge chocalate sundae isn't a good idea!?!?!? although my hubby always tells me that ice cream is not an efficient way to cool down in the summer b/c it might provide temporary relief but then your body works to get warm again and in reality you end up expending more energy and end up hotter....SO with that theory - shouldn't eating ice cream burn calories?

Interesting stuff about yogurt.

I'm a Yoplait Light eater. Here's the ingredients for Strawberries and Bananas.

Cultured pasteurized grade A nonfat milk, high fructose corn syrup, strawberries, modified corn starch, banana puree, whey protein concentrate, kosher gelatin, citric acid, natural flavor, tricalcium phosphate, asparatame, potassium sorbate added to maintain freshness, red #40, vitamin a acetate and vitamin D2.

Some of that stuff doesn't sound all that good. :scared1:

Okay, now that I've put in my $.02 about the yogurt, I can get on with the rest of the Lean Meaner thread....

Tracey: I admire your restraint with the little piece of cake, eaten with appreciation. I'm working on moderation & guilt-free living.

Beth: That's 10 miles on the dreadmill, and the word dreadmill suggests just how much willpower you needed to muster up the energy. Congrats! I always have chocolate cravings, and I'm absolutely no good in terms of managing them. I try to go with high-end, darker chocolates or organic chocolates (Scharffen Berger, Green & Black) but that's about it. (I do find if I spend enough money on chocolate I feel too guilty to eat it all in one sitting...does that count for anything?) I admire the low-carb hot chocolate willpower, though.

Lisa: I'll have to try the 1/2 hot chocolate-1/2 coffee. I usually go for the mocha and try to delude myself that the milk makes the drink healthy.

Kim: I hope you're feeling better! Those lingering coughs make it difficult to do anything remotely sweat-inducing.

Connie: Your Dove Chocolate reminded me. I will sometimes put chocolate kisses in the freezer to slow down the melt-in-your-mouth sensation. Of course, it ruins the temper of the chocolate; but it improves my temper.

Vic: I'm glad you're off the meds and well on the mend! I'm sure Seaside will quake in fear when they learn you're coming to conquer! :cool1: And isn't the yogurt stuff kind of freaky? I mean, I know it's still better for me than lots of things I eat--but I just think of all yogurt as being really, I don't know, natural.

Maria: :yay: for workout consistency! And I really think that eating healthily includes being full and satisfied. Like you've been saying, nothing like feeling deprived to undercut everything else. It's the balance and moderation that I think I need to work on the most. I'd level a food challenge at you, but, well...I might need one myself. I can't be the lemming that leads us off the cliff.

Kate: I'm telling the ice cream burns calories to DH; he's the real aficionado in our household. (Ben & Jerry's in our freezer all the time.)

As for me: Well, you read the above post. Apparently I'm enjoying the sugary goodness that is hidden in my yogurt. I managed to work out every day day Friday-today, and feel pretty good about it. I'll be taking a light day tomorrow, though, and my body feels ready for some down time. Today was weigh in for me and I've lost another pound. :goodvibes I'm not pulling down Beth numbers, but I've been pretty steady and it's a pace I can live with.

I love yogurt, but I have to stick to the low carb ones.....I think Dannon Low sugar/low carb. I'll have to read the labels though, probably no better than the ones you listed.:headache: Sort of burns me too.....you are trying to eat healthy and they stick high fructose corn syrup in it! That's the worst thing they could do!

Funny, you had Vic looking at his too!

Kim: I hope that your cough gets better soon. It's doesn't make for a fun time exercising when you're coughing so much!:goodvibes

Hi all.
Thanks, Debra, for the yogurt info. I went and checked out all of our containers (we have 4 different kinds). They had all kinds of stuff in them. I am such a label checker, but for some reason don't check my yogurt. I did at one time because I read that some of the kid flavors have partially hydrogenated oils in them and removed those from our shopping list. But, even my Weight Watchers had yucky stuff and I love it because it's only 1 point. I'll be looking from now on. Thanks.
My chocolate fix is the Ghirardelli squares--Yum! The coffee and cocoa sounds really good though. And....I know that Bob Greene says that those who consume hot drinks consume something like 15% less calories during the day. So keep up with the hot drinks.
Congrats on pounds lost this week---to all who lost. To those who didn't, don't get discouraged. I've plateaued for 5 weeks now. I try to think my body is saying, "Is she really gonna keep this up?" Eventually the plateau will break--it's just a matter of staying strong(or at least trying to). I just wish it wasn't so hard. And then I stick with the looser pants test.....as long as they're not getting tighter, I'm doing o.k. Stay strong guys.:)
Glad to hear that those who were sick are feeling better.:yay:

Copy the sentence/pargraph you want to quote. If you want to use the quick reply window, click the icon (paper and quill pen) at the bottom righthand corner of each post, or you can click the "Post Reply" button.

At the top of the window, looking at the icons starting from left to right, click on the last one on the right (It's yellow and looks like a cartoon bubble). You will now see the words quote in brackets.

Place your cursor between the brackets and paste the sentence/paragraph. Make sure the words "Quote" are bracketed.

To add a name, place the equal sign after the first quote and then add the name. It should look like this [QUOTE=Big Vic]

Hi Everyone,

I was looking for some healthy eating motivation so I popped in here. I went back and read the last 5 pages and it was just what I needed. Thanks.

I’ll take a minute to introduce myself for those who haven’t “met” me before. I started following WW last April in an attempt to lose some of my “pregnancy” weight. I managed to lose 27 lbs in the subsequent 7 months in no small part due to the encouragement on the weight loss thread (Thanks, Maria, Minnie, Connie and Wendy among others!!) Since November I’ve gained and lost the same 3 to 5 lbs. I still have a little way to go to reach my goal weight, but in addition to that I want to start eating healthier foods. I’m not a big fan of vegetables, but I know they are good for me. In theory I agree with the “if you can’t pronounce it you shouldn’t be eating it” philosophy, but I have to say I do eat the 100 calorie packs of chips and cookies which are packed with questionable ingredients. I hope that by stating my intentions of healthier eating to this thread I will be more motivated to stick with it. Thanks in advance for your support.

Tracey: Sorry you’ve plateaued, but good for you for not getting discouraged and sticking with it.

Vic: Glad you like the new shoes, good luck with the blister. You would think by now it would be better.

Beth: I agree it can be frustrating not to see the results on the scale. It definitely helps to have another measure to go by. Too bad just knowing you treated your body to healthy food and exercise isn’t enough sometimes. I just bought a scale that measures body fat % and hydration %. I have no idea how accurate it is, but I’m hoping that if I don’t see the weight decrease at least I’ll see a drop in body fat, or if nothing else just see that I am properly hydrating myself.

Debra: Congratulation on losing a pound. Every one counts!

Maria: Hello. Good job on being consistent with your exercise. That should really help. I agree with you that the miles/minutes challenge is great motivation.

Kim: Hope the cough is gone. Good luck with your weight loss goal.

Have a great day everyone.

Beth: I just love how you're always so positive! I'm much more of a "Downer Debra," so I really appreciate it when I have people to balance me out. I think you're right, though, that we have to recognize our own efforts & accomplishments, even if those things are always reflected in quantifiable ways (on the scale, with our pace, in lifting weights, etc.). We're all making choices and positive changes that we need to acknowledge.

Vic: Right back on the TM--great news! New-shoe feel is better than new-car smell, IMO. (Although I have to give an edge to new-car smell over even new-shoe smell....) My blisters are mostly healed, but I've noticed a tendency to get that hot-spot feeling at much lower mileage these days. Is this what's happening to you? Runner's World has reviews of socks in this month's issue that I need to read up on.

Tracey: I actually feel kind of guilty about spreading the yogurt news. I mean, there are lots worse things we could eat (and I do). It was just such a surprise to me, you know? I'm trying to keep food choices like yogurt as healthy as possible to balance out those things--like chocolate--that I know are non-negotiable for me over the long haul.

Cindy: I agree with you that a reasonable goal is eating healthier. There's no way that I want to set myself up for failure by following some holy grail of food consumption. You sound very moderate in your choices--I admire that.

As for me: Practically a snow day here--lots of snow, which turned to rain, and is now beginning to ice over. Activities are cancelled all over the city. The good news, if you can call it that, is that I added some snow shoveling to today's totals--45 minutes outside, but only about 30 active minutes. Unlike the friendly, fluffy stuff of last week, this was heavy & mushy. Yechh. New stories are providing hints on the right way to shovel. I'm a bit chilled right now, so tonight sounds like a good time for my homemade black-bean soup (one of the few things I cook that I actually like).

I think this is a really hard time of year NOT to get frustrated. Many of us came off the high that was the Disney marathon weekend. Even if we didn't, there's the lingering New Year's resolutions, illnesses and injuries, and the long winter that seems to get even longer. It's hard to step on the scale or look at one's diet or track one's miles & not see the progress. But we're LEAN MEANERS, and that means that we're tough, we're strong, we're dedicated, and most importantly WE'RE NOT ALONE. I celebrate each of your accomplishments as if they were my own, and struggle with your challenges. I know you can do it--and with you at my back, I know I can, too.

Exactly! I'm just hoping the skin hasn't toughened up yet. I would hate to think I'm going to be blister prone from now on. Before the marathon I never had a blister.

Debra: It's the funniest thing.....you think I am positive??? :lmao: My dh is always on me for being so negative! I do try to put a positive spin on my 'negativism', but I am probably the most negative person you have ever 'met'!!

I am feeling pretty positive with the scale right now. I feel vindegated with any small loss on the scale. It doesn't have to be big numbers, as long as it's less! Today's total for the year is 12 pounds! Yippee!! :cool1: :cool1:

My clothes are fitting better, and that's the biggest accomplishment!

I am in the groove, and it's easier right now to make good choices. That doesn't always happen for me. I think I do better when I am off the 'sugar'!!!! Sugar is a big craving for me, and once I start there is no stopping. After a couple of weeks off the white stuff, I don't crave it so bad anymore. I am taking the time to appreciate feeling good right now. Too bad I have another 15-20 pounds to take off1:scared1:

Good morning all.

But we're LEAN MEANERS, and that means that we're tough, we're strong, we're dedicated, and most importantly WE'RE NOT ALONE.
This cracked me up. It is such a wonderful statement. It just reminded me of a Saturday Night Live skit (was it Steve Martin or Al Franken?) and he would look in the mirror and say things like...."I'm tough enough, strong enough, and dog gone it, people like me" (well it was close to that). Does anyone else remember that skit? Sometimes, my sense of humor is a little out of whack.
Debra...thank you for the above sentiment....I feel like I'm all of these things. I tell my son that I thank him for challenging me to run, because everytime my foot hits the pavement I realize that there's someone inside me that I never knew existed. And then I come here and see that there are lots more people out there just like me and we come in all shapes and sizes. And the support I find here is amazing. You're so right we're not alone.
Cindy....I struggled with the baby weight too and put in on hold for 18 months.:)
Vic.....beware..you may have created a quoting monster.
Debra & Beth Negative? Seriously. You two are ultra positive and always have kind and supportive things to say.:woohoo:
My son and I swear by the UnderArmour socks. They have a really nice arch support and are super comfy. Has anyone tried the Injinji (is that right?) socks....they look like a glove for your foot. Seems like they would be great for anyone prone to toe blisters.
Have a great day all.

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful Hump Day.

3 miles on the TM last night and the feet faired pretty well. I used Body Glide on the affected areas and it helped. Still had the burning sensation, but nothing like the night before.

Good Afternoon!

For the 3 of you that are not on other threads where I post (there can't be many!)--

Ok, I don't have much of a heart to post today -- I'll try to make this short. I ended up going to bed with half a pizza and no exercise. When I went to pick ds up from his After School program, the lights were off and the doors were locked. The teachers in charge *forgot* him and left. Fortunately he was with his former 3rd grade teacher, helping her in her room. She had no idea they had left, either. He's fine, I'm fine, but last night when I finally got him half an hour after we arrived (no, we were not late), I was a shaking blob of Mommy goo.

This resulted in me completely off the wagon. I took to my bed with ds firmly tucked by my side and ate half a pizza and ding dongs. I could not get enough food. I know this is not the right response, I seemed to be on automatic pilot. Anyway, I am back to eating normally today, but still pretty freaked out. I'm hoping for a workout, but right now I'm feeling out of sorts.

Just wanted to check in and say I hope everyone is having a great eating and workout day!

It is pouring here, so it matches my antsy mood...

I would have been SO MAD!!!! Maybe you can get a good exercise in when you kick those teacher's butt!!!!

I have always learned the most important thing when you fall off the horse is not to beat yourself up but instead get back up and keep going!!

I am really sorry that happened - I am an emotional eater too - I would have added a pint of ice cream to my pizza!!!

I just can't imagine anything scarier than not knowing where your child is. I am normally a pretty rational, calm person. I had pure fear running through my veins.

Worfiedoodles, I can identify. But let's talk, okay?

Along the way of achieving our goals, life happens. It's not that you reached for pizza and ding-dongs, it's that you didn't find a way to deal with your feelings. Take a moment and learn from this experience...(I take lots of moments cause I have lots of experiences, so this is the voice of experience talking here). What can you do differently, next time? Could you have reached for the phone and called the school board instead of reaching for the ding-dongs? (ever think those things were aptly named?) Called a real friend? (food is fuel-not friends), gone for a run? The experts tell us if we plan our reactions, we live up to the plan. That's why we practiced fire drills as children, and should practice them as families. Anyway, that's just some food for thought.

Btw, I don't think the pizza was too bad! I love pizza! And the ding-dongs aren't going to destroy your life. Everyone is safe and you had to eat, anyway! So all is well. :flower3:

Connie -- Thank you for your sage advice. One thing I don't have is a contingency plan for an emotionally loopy day -- I know what to do when my schedule is thrown off, someone is sick, etc., to stay on track, but I've never written a plan (I'd have to write it down, because I can't think when I'm upset) to get me through those times without turning to food. You have given me alot of food for thought (ok, even I admit that's a bad pun), and I will try to work with it. I did call my bff, and she was, well, mad. She was not a calming influence at all. DS is in a small, Catholic school, and the teacher who runs the After School program is the daughter of the principal, so I knew yelling at anyone wasn't going to get me far. They did call and apologize today, and they were genuinely sorry and mortified, so nothing I could say could make them feel worse. It is over, and I am letting it go. But you're right, this is a chance to learn from my experience, and I am going to use it.

You just talked me back into getting on the bike tonight, Thank You!:worship:

Vic: I hope it's not permanent. I'm prone to blisters, but get tired of trying to man up about it. Good to know the Body Glide helped; it doesn't seem to make much difference for me.

Beth: Thanks for the socks suggestion. I'm trying a bunch of different things, but I tend to treat socks as the magic talisman to ward against them. But you, negative? I just can't see it. Me, on the other hand....There's no question that everyone in my family sees me as negative, at least when it comes to my own life. Drives my MIL crazy, in particular. But what can I say--it makes me happy. :rolleyes1

And 12 pounds. That's wonderful! Not just the pounds or the clothes fitting, but the whole feeling of craving control and accomplishment. My BIL is cutting sugar out of his diet and he says the difference in his energy level is unbelievable, that he feels more upbeat, and he misses it less and less. Similar for you?

Stacie: That's great consistency in working out. I'm hoping your drs.' appointments go well and that there's very little waiting. (Big hopes, I know.)

Tracey: I remember that SNL skit! Hi-lar-i-ous!. It's so great that your son supports and challenges you. I think we all need (at least) one person in our lives to do that. I'll probably try to the UnderAmour, since I like so much of their other stuff. Runner's World recommends the Injinji, but I'm more on the fence about them...don't know why.

Maria: I said it in the team thread, but I think you handled everything MUCH better than I would have. Food can be a comfort--I know I tend to reach for pizza in that way, and for far less serious reasons. Take comfort not only in the happy conclusion with DS, but that you're so conscious of why you're doing things. You'll get back on track. You did what you needed to do emotionally, you're reflecting on it, and it's just a blip in your everyday life. (Connie says it better, btw.)

Connie: Great words. I'm lucky to know you.

As for me: More running and XT today, plus an aborted attempt to get outdoors for some fresh air. I've been on plan today, but last night I was very hungry @ 10 p.m. I refuse to go to bed hungry, so I made some oatmeal with bananas and raisins, and it seemed to tide me over. I'll need to watch my intake during the day, though, as I worry that I'm not eating enough to keep a consistent energy level and that might lead to late-night snacking. Sometimes it's hard for me to remember to eat when I'm working and in the zone.

Oh, and a little dose of the real me and negativity. A friend of mine says I'm only happy when I'm watching a movie and the protagonist dies. There's more than a little truth to that.

Maria...So sorry to hear about your son! How scarry! I would have been furious! I LOVE pizza. It is one of my weaknesses!!! You did outstanding getting on that bike and getting back on plan! Great job girl! Way to go!!! :thumbsup2

Debra...Great job sticking to the plan. You chose a very healthy snack! Me, I probably would have gone to bed hungry. Bad, yes, I know.

Connie...Great advice! Having a plan is a necessity. What's the saying??? If you fail to plan, you plan to fail...

Vic...So happy to hear the body glide helped! It's hard to run or walk w/ hurt'in feet!

Beth...Intersting info about the socks! I've only tried the cheaper brand that Fleet Feet carry. ZuLu. They are so more comfy than regular cotton socks! I wear them all the time, not just when I'm training. I've not yet had too much of a problem w/ blisters, but then again, I don't have very high mileage either... I'll have keep this in mind if start having issues.

Tracy...SO right. The support here is amazing!!!

Ok...for me... so, it was raining yesterday. It was my day to run (well, walk/run). I've never wanted to run in the rain before. Heck no, to the TM I go. Well, for some reason, yesterday was different. I just had this desire to get out there and get wet. Matt had a Dr appointment in Wilson yesterday. We got there and I went in and changed clothes. My parents live about 3-3.5 miles away. I told Matt I was going to run to their house. He looked at me like I was insane. Let's just say he was not too thrilled about me running on a 5 lane highway. I told him that if when he got done, and he saw me, to stop and I'd get in the car w/ him. So...to make a long story short, I ran 2 miles in 28 minutes before he picked me up. I acutally walked more than I ran, which is ok. It was actually a good place to run as I could be on flat ground just off the highway (althought I was in people's yards! No sidewalk) I wasn't too close to traffic and I could actually see a little path where it seems someone must run/walk in the same area. After he picked me up, we got to my mom and dad's neighborhood and he dropped me off at the front of the subdivision. I got in another mile for a total of 3 miles/45min.

I actually had a great time running the rain. There was this cleansing effect it had on me. I hate getting all hot and sweaty so in the rain, you just get wet. You don't feel sweaty at all! As the cars passed, I kinda giggled to myself wondering what those folks were thinking...(This girl is crazy!)

Hopefully my shoes will dry out and still fit ok. I've washed a pair of shoes before and they never fit the same after... :sad2: I hope since these just got soaked in the rain and I let them sit out and dry vs. sticking them in the washing machine, they will be ok. They are my newest and most expensive pair!

So far this week my activity as been:

Sunday: 3.6 miles, 50 minutes
Monday: 20 min step, 8.5 miles on bike in 40 min., 20 min walk at lunch
Tuesday: 30 min aquacise
Wednesday: 3 miles walk/run, 45 min

Today, I plan to do a 45 min step class.

I will say, I need to keep track better of my food. I don't know if I'm eating too much, not enough or just building muscle. With all the above activity, I got on the scale this morning and I'm actually up in weight. ugh! :headache: Frustrating! I guess for some folks the the time spent in said activity above is not much, but for me...it's soooo much better than I was doing and about all I have time to fit in. Life is just to hectic!

Anyway...enough about me today...Hope everyone has great day!!!

Wow, I was gone 1/2 a day and the posts were flying!!!! I hope I can keep it all straight....I'll try at least.

VIC:: The socks have a two fold advantage. They help with blisters I think, but with the silver in them they don't get smelly. The company says that you can take a weeks test wearing them and at the end of the week, they will not stink. Nice to know, huh?:cool1:

Maria:: Well, I don't know what to say. I don't think that I would have handled the situation with you son better than you did. I would have wanted someone's head on a platter. What sense does it make to have a after school program, and not fulfill that obligation? I would have been livid (((of course, after freaking out not knowing were my kid is!. Wow, to much to think about. Don't worry so much about the pizza......we've all been there. It's hard to follow any kind of plan when you are upset. Weight loss takes FOREVER, and life gets in the way sometimes. I believe if I eat well 90% of the time, I am doing great!. Move on, and just be happy that your ds is okay!

Stacie:: A food diary really helped me when I got started. Low carb was a new thing for me, and was difficult to get my head around. I had done WW and it's the only plan I ever really followed before. So a food diary was really important for me to keep track of everything. I really should still be doing it! I have the idea pretty well, and think I can just wing it, but sometimes that really doesn't work out!:scared1:

Tracey:: I too am old enough to remember that skit on SNL. It was to funny! I really hate to admit all the TV I remember, b/c that clues everyone in that I am OLD! My b-day is on Saturday and I am turning 42!:scared1: :scared1: :scared1: How did that happen anyway?

To anyone I missed.....sorry.....it's so hard to keep up! Things are going pretty well for me. I have stayed on plan, but family stress is getting in the way. My dh is looking for a new job, and that is always stressful for me ((((and the finances!))))) I have to keep my head in the game though.....I am a stress eater. I don't want to mess everything up.....I will try to keep focused, with all of your help of course!!!:yay: :yay:

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! I hope you're all enjoying it in whatever way works best for your lean meaner selves. Preferably with loved ones, loved activities, and even loved food.

Maria: You go, girl! You just made lemonade out of that situation!

Stacie: I've never been to a Fleet Feet--never lived close to one before. What are the stores like? I think you've been getting lots of good cardio time in--congrats! And you're being consistent, too, which is much better than the weekend warrior pattern. (Not that there's anything wrong with that if that's all one can manage...).

Beth: As one of my college students once said to me: "You're not old; you're vintage!" Seriously, the boomers have redefined youth for us. We're never growing old, just growing wiser (and in my case, more set in my ways). I'm so sorry about the stress in your household. I know how that can trigger all sorts of things, from eating poorly to insomnia to a general disinterest in working out. Stay strong, both of you!

As for me: It's now approaching the dinner hour, and I've not had any Valentine's Day sweets! DH is working late tonight--and how is this different from any other night, you may ask?--so there will be no extra-special dinner. Hard to fall off the wagon when there's no wagon waiting to take you for a ride. (Hmmm, not sure that's the phrasing I want to use....)

Good Morning Lean Meaners!!!

Debra--what Vic said!!! :rotfl: I liked Fleet Feet. They helped me very much when came to being fitted for shoes and finding some that worked well for me. I know they spent about 2 hours with me and I think I tried on just about women's shoe in the store! Also the only place I've found some good support for the girls...if you know what I mean! :goodvibes

Vic--Yay for clear lungs! Should definatley make working out a bit easier on the lungs huh? Don't forget to take your meds young man! (hand on hip, pointing finger...)

For me...last night I did 2 miles on the bike in 8 mins before Step Class, which was 35 min and then 10 min of strength training. Step on the scale this morning and it's still climbing... Ugh! Yes, I am obsessed w/ the scale and cannot make myself not weigh every day. :sad2: If I still weight this much on Tuesday for the Biggest Loser weigh-in, I will be 3 lbs above "the plan." The plan is only 1lb per week too. I'm not asking for a tremendous amount here people--just 1 lb per week!

Oh, well... I hope I can just make it through the weekend!

Hope everyone has a nice one! The temps here look pretty mild. Mid 50-60s. Should make for a nice "long" run on Sunday! (My long run is 3 miles!) :lmao: Right now I am walking more than running, so let's hope I run a little more than walk this weekend!

Stacie, are you eating enough? This is a very fine line when you are trying to lose weight by diet and exercise. Consuming enough calories is just as important as not consuming enough. You have to feed the machine so to speak. You mentioned a few posts back that you need to start a food log and I would highly suggest this for anyone trying to lose weight. It is amazing first of all, the little places that we "waste" calories and how many times we do not consume enough. When I work at home, I have no issue with not enough but when I was working outside the home, some days, I would only consume 700 to 800 calories in a day, missing lots of meals and then making up for it by snacking. Even though my snack choices were good ones, too much of a good thing is still, well, too much. Try the log just for a week and then reassess what you are doing right and wrong and try to adjust in those places. :flower3:

Lisa--Thanks. Yep. I've been thinking that. I am going to try to start logging what I eat. I don't eat huge meals, but do have a tendency to snack a lot so I'm not sure if it's too many cals or not enough. We have such a busy life a lot of times we only eat cereal for dinner. :sad2: Last night I only had a Nutri-Grain bar... 120 cals.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully in a week or two I'll know what I need to adjust...

My sense is that you are not eating enough. I know it sounds kind of anal (and it probably is) but I come home from the store, break out all the carrots, celery, and any fruits like cantaloupe, melon, pineapple, and cut them up and put them in serving bags, 1 cup each. My kids will grab these also for snacks so it works well for me. Anything else, popcorn, pretzels and the like, I portion out too. It has helped me immensely especially where I am home all day. Getting up and portioning out something takes too long whereas just getting up and grabbing a bag of something and a glass of water works for me.

Good luck with this and I think you will surprise yourself at the number of calories you are not eating.

Debra: Thanks for the encouragement! I am actually having a weak moment right now.....my kids have peanut butter Captain Crunch on the counter from breakfast.....I am starving and LOVE p/b CC! I actually hopped on here to get away from it! That would definitely mess up my mo-jo!

Stacie: It is REALLY hard to stick to your guns with a healthy lifestyle when the scale is not cooperating! I say start writing everything down to see if there is hidden 'snacking' calories or maybe you are not eating enough. Lisa is right.....you have to fuel the machine!

Vic: Take your medicine!!!!!! Your heart is key to the machine! Keep it healthy and running for another 100,000 miles!

I am going to stay strong! My 42nd birthday is tomorrow, and I don't want to let my guard down. Maybe I can limit myself to a small treat! :cool1:

Everyone else.......hang in there!

Beth: First of all HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!! Yay for 42!!!

Second, portion out some of the CC and look at the calories. How much can you justify today? Are you willing to give some up in another area?? When I feel weak, I ask myself, do I want an apple or carrots? If the answer is no then guess what, I am not hungry. On the flip side of that, never, never, never deny yourself cravings. Have a little. Denying causes breakdown in your willpower. If nothing is off limits it becomes your choice whether to have it or not.

Hi all, Happy Morning!!!!

Stacie....I've been reading alot of comments about people buying....uh....support from Fleet Feet. I think I'm going to head up there to take a look. My only question is that some of these look like they have zippers in front. I'm not sure that would be comfy for me. So, I guess, without getting too personal, I'm asking if you went with a zipper or traditional? And if you went with a zipper are they comfy? Vic, you didn't read that did you?:scared:
Vic... Yay for you with healthy lungs.:cheer2: Now take your meds and give you Dr. something else to fuss over instead.
Lisa...Thanks for the making the suggestion for bagging up the cut up fruits, vegs, snacks, etc. I usually cut them up and put them in large containers, but bagging them is a great idea.
Beth....Happy, Happy, Birthday!!!!:cake: pixiedust: ( a day early)
Minnie....We all have bad days. Today is a brand new day. Way to get right back on plan.

Hard to fall off the wagon when there's no wagon waiting to take you for a ride. (Hmmm, not sure that's the phrasing I want to use....):rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

On Valentine's Day, we always have a nice dinner in the dining room with candlelight. It was so nice!!!! Today.....all four boys are home for a 4 day week-end. So my house is loud and rowdy----I kinda like it that way. Now, if we can make it to Tuesday without anything being broken (including bones) we'll consider ourselves very lucky. It's kind of like a big wrestling match.:rotfl2: I may have to slide on my plan and have a glass of wine. What? It's only 9:30? Oh, my!
Have a great day all!

Tracey,

My only question is that some of these look like they have zippers in front. I'm not sure that would be comfy for me. So, I guess, without getting too personal, I'm asking if you went with a zipper or traditional? And if you went with a zipper are they comfy?

Mine is regular--well, w/ like 4 or 5 clasps in the back. I don't remember if I even tried on a zipper one. It has adjustable velcro straps, which worked nice since I'm a bit short. I actually wear a totally different size in a sports bra than regular. I'll see if I can find the name of mine and I'll let you know.
