We need all the motivational help we can get to keep training all year. A fun way to do that is to have a team miles game.

There will be a post for each team and you will post your miles and keep a running total. The team with the most miles at on Dec 31st wins. There will be prizes for the winning team. The game will begin on Feb 1st.

You can post miles from anything you do under your own power: Walk, Run, Swim, Bike, Stationary Bike, Treadmill, ect......

Please sign-up and if you have an exercise partner you want on your team with you list them to. Put your average weekly miles down from all sources so I can make the teams fairly even.

I am going to try to keep an average of 30 miles a week this year but I tend to get slack when I don't have something big hanging over my head. Better put me on a team with an enforcer!

I'd like to join, but I'm not a high mileage girl. I'd hate to bring my team down. I get almost no miles in during the summer. It is just too hot around here, and I have the kiddos home from school. I'll be training for the Minnie 15K and the 2009 Half, so I'll get some miles then. Other than that though, I'll probably average 10 (maybe 15) miles a week.

Boy, don't ya'll all want me on your team now? :lmao:

(And yes, I'm originally from Louisiana, so it's okay for me to say "ya'll all" or even "all ya'll." :rotfl2: )

You can put me down. DH doesn't post here, but he runs, too. Do I include him?

I have no clue what to tell you we average. We're doing a half in March and then plan on the Disney half in 2009 so we'll have those LRs... Otherwise, we only have 10K planned. :confused3

My mileage varies a lot. Between all sources, it can be from 20 - 50 miles a week.

Lots of help, huh?

I'd love to take part too! I am training for my first anything, the 2009 Half. I have never been a runner so I am a total novice. I don't know what to say I will be doing but being a beginner I am sure I'll be on the low end. Lately I am using our elliptical and putting in roughly 10-15 miles a week on that.

I'm in! I guess I'll say 15-20 miles/wk, but it greatly varies depending where I am in the training. My goal is 8 miles of biking, 8 TM walk, and one long walk each week -- or it will be once I've recovered from the Half! ;)

Thanks, Dave!:goodvibes

Eva, of course we want you with us. The whole idea is to have an extra spark to help us get our backfields in motion. Hey y'all is formal english around here.

If you have a hubby or princess that trains to and you want to post their miles you just need to do it and we count you as two people on the team.

There is no minimum amount of miles, hey a lot of you are doing your first event so you are going to have to take baby steps, but later in the year you will be contributing much more.

I will be appointing team captains for each team as soon as I know how many teams we have. The team captain will:

Lead the team in choosing a team name.

Do the initial post on Feb 1st to get the team rolling.

Insure that all team members adhere to the dress code when they post.

Poke your team members when they need a hand up if they start to get down.

Insure that your miles are added each day accurately.

There will be prizes so keep your team motivated.

I'm in, too! My mileage varies a lot, as I live a pretty pedestrian lifestyle in addition to trying to become a runner. I'd say between 35-50 miles a week, less now & more when the weather cooperates. I'll try to log my miles this week & let you know.

Thanks for starting this--it'll be great fun!

As I estimate I am currently averaging walking about 1000 feet a week going from my house to the car, from my car to my office building elevators, and from diverse parking lots to gyms and swimming pools for multiple childrens' sporting events/practices, I am willing to pass on this this year and just annoy all the teams.

Then again, I do have grand plans and I might just be a diamond in the rough. Given my finicky back and hips though, some caution may be warranted prior to signing me to a long term contract.

Mel -- omg! I was just going to post about you'uns! My parents originate from the bootheel of Missouri, and that's proper English! Of course, these people also say "Mizzourah" and "Sant Louis", so clearly they are not from the civilized part of the state, where "hoosier" is a big insult...:rotfl: :rotfl2:

When I first spoke to my FIL (who lives in NH) on the phone, I barely understood a word he said. He had quite the wicked New England accent. I also learned wicked is an adjective or adverb when we moved to Boston....every region has it's little quirks to make it interesting!:thumbsup2

Hi! I'm new here. I'd like to join you all (if I were from North Jersey, I would need to say "yous all" I think). I need some motivation and accountability to get off my bottom and start moving. I'm on a plan for the half for the first weekend of May (or the Minnie!), so my mileage is not amazing. Okay, so far, I also have only walked from the car to the house lately.

But TODAY it's going to change. I'm going to the gym closest to my house and I'm going to join so I can use their treadmill. If my house had more room, we would so have one in the house, but it's not an option right now.

I think to start my mileage is supposed to be around 13 miles a week, and then it builds (obviously).

I'm so excited to join the WISH team! Woohoo!

Thanks for having me. I'm not going to let you down. I hope.

I'm in the 30 miles a week.

I know the feeling - I'm real good at starting - I've started the gym at least 4 times (Ballys Fitness and Discovery.com have a free 8 week program!!) I dont know if this time is different - but this time - I'm throwing a rope out and tying a knot - and I'm going to hang on!! I'm making goals, and I"m going to be accountable - its time for this old woman to get fit and to be accountable to ME!! and in the process I want to have fun!

and do NOT think you are doing this alone - I'm all dressed and ready to hit the gym as well (no treadmill here- - altho I do have a Walk Away the Pounds 3 mile exercise video on days I cant get to the gym!) Its -20 Below Windchill - but I'm going -

So as you hit the gym, know your team mates are there with you!! YOU are NOT alone!! :cheer2:

Thanks so much, Sandy! I was so disappointed last weekend when I got all dressed and drove to the gym to discover how much cash they wanted up front. I don't like the gym that i'm joining, but it's a means to an end for me. My asthma dr does not want me exercising in the cold (or outside when it's warm and the ozone count is high--or the air quality is poor, which is most days!).

I'm hoping when it gets a bit warmer to take the dog out on some trails--she's a springer and loves to get out to the parks!

Have a great time at the gym, Sandy!

Oh, oh, oh- I want to be on Kathy's(Valentine's) team. I may be a bit of a ringer for whoever gets me though. Last year was 3300 miles biking, almost 900 miles running, another 142 miles swimming plus hiking, cross country skiing, walking and other pursuits. If you can believe it biking and running were actually reduced from 2006.

Biking will be tough to call this year but I plan on breaking 1000+ running and the goal for swimming is 170 miles(300,000 yds). Plus I move to someplace I can train outside year round in June so biking may not take the quite the hit I'm expecting since I basically didn't ride for 4 months in 2007.

Oooh, I want to play! As a born and bred New Yawker, well, when it comes to tawkin dat southern tawk, fuggedabowdit. But -- I do have a cousin-in-law named Skeeter. Does that count for anything wit youse guys?

After what we psychologist types call the post-reinforcement pause (i.e., vegging out for a week or two admiring my medals), I am going to be gearing up for the Minnie, I think, so I'll start at 15 - 20 a week and go from there.

Thanks for organizing this, Dave! I am hoping it will help keep me from turning into a total slug now that I am back in the cold north.

Hi guys and pretty princesses. I think we should take sign-ups till the 25th and then put the teams together. Everyone who offered to be captains, thank you. Once the teams are started we can add new members as new WISHers come on since it will be open to everyone always. Should someone become injured and want to drop our for a while, they will be reinstated on which ever team if any is short.

The total miles will be updated each time a member posts their miles, please plan on posting at least weekly, dailey is preferred but not all of us can post every day.

Everyone please be thinking of team names.

Should I put all the Minnie Gals on the same Team? That much girl power in one place may effect the earth's climate. Talk about global warming! I would have to put an opposing team on RedNeck wannabes together to balance the scales.:)

After what we psychologist types call the post-reinforcement pause (i.e., vegging out for a week or two admiring my medals)OH! It has a name? I was wondering what was going on with me. I put the medals in the drawer with the rest of them today so I guess its time to get serious about my next race.

You can't quit running! We still have to run a race together. Running the exact same time 30 minutes apart doesn't count. I think we might be perfect racing partners. Also, my first marathon went alot like yours, so there is great hope that you can run backwards and dance around people when you run the next one!

I was looking at Lynne's totals and realizing that any sort of triathlete's totals (mine for example) would make a huge tilt in the standings compared to those who simply walk/run. So I was thinking maybe counting hours instead of miles? So those who dedicate their time walking 3 hours and covering 12 miles get the same credit as a cyclist who bikes 60 in that same timespan? I know that I'm more impressed with someone who can walk for 10 hours a week than someone who gets the variety of doing multiple sports... I couldn't do it! :confused3

Excellent point, Matt....I'm with you on that. As a walker I can rack up the hours alot quicker than the miles.

Hum, total hours exercised, interesting concept. What does everyone else think, we could track both and have prizes for both catagories. We could let each team deside if they wanted to compete in both catagories or just the miles, or just the hours.

I'm not very fast, so total time would be best for anyone competing on my team. :( It took me 50 minutes to go 2.5 miles today. I'm hoping, obviously, to speed that up, but I'll never be running 6 miles in an hour, you know?

I think tracking both might be more work for the team captains, but I think it's worth it. :)

Well for me - I may be alone - but I think I worked every bit as hard doing that marathon - even tho I came in lastest (not last, but close) so doing hours does seem to take into account how hard we're working -

and yet, its supposed to be motivating, and I know Mighty Panda that you are doing your best to equalize the teams - good luck with that btw!! :worship:

so - - either way - I will work as hard as I can!!

Hummmmmmmm mixed feelings. My goal is to complete the mileage within a time limit. Example my goal for the Donald 2009 is 3 hours. I was just over 3 hours for the Indy - I hope to improve. If I go for the hours I walk, bike, etc - I do not want to lose track of that. Do you think we will train as hard counting the time? :confused3

I want to play. I am not certain of the mileage/time at this point due to pending issues. I'll go with hopeful of 15+ miles/week and/or some hours of time trying to maintain some sort of XT.

Well I never posted my mileage goal. Sooo, I am hoping to keep it 20+ until marathon training in the fall. I am also hoping to race a little more locally which will kick up my miles a little bit more too. I use the MfM plans for training which go by minutes not miles so much so I am just guessing....and knowing me, it will probably be more. Not like Lynne.......:rolleyes1

I'm good with either miles or time or both.

I try to do spinning as XT once in a while, but the bikes at our gym don't track "miles." So, I wouldn't be able to add that in to my miles calculation but it could count towards a team time.

Lisa, have you used www.mapmyride.com? I'm using one of the Running for Mortals training plans, so I'm doing time as opposed to miles like you. But, when I get home I map out the route I ran/walked so I know exactly how far I went.

Cari: Funny, I just had someone else ask me that but they used mapmywalk.com. Same thing apparently just a different site. I use my Garmin 205 religiously and I have no idea how I ever lived without it. I used to use the Nike+ feature but figured out quickly that it was not very accurate no matter how much I calibrated it.

I used to beat myself up because I wanted to go so many miles in so much time but now that I use minutes and have 1 mileage run a week, it works better for me. I don't feel the stress to make it x amount of miles, just x amount of minutes and however far I make it, it is what it is.

Carrie - WTPLC alerted me to this *friendly* competition. I would love to join in. I did a walk/run for the Disney half-marathon this year and plan to do the same in the Mickey in 09' My mileage will probably be 12 miles on foot, 20miles biking per week until about August when my mileage will obviously kicked up a few notches!! :goodvibes
