Hi, There,

It looks like we're going to be hanging out here for quite a while. Have you shared the good news with your kids yet? We are not going to tell them until a year before if we can manage it. My father and mother in law are going, and so are my brother and sister and law and their little ones (7, 5, 5, and 5 by cruise time) Ours will be 14, 12 and 8 by then.

We picked October 17, 2009 because it is my in-laws 50th anniversary and our 20th. How about you?

Congrats on your upcoming 20th anniversary! We picked 10/17/09 for my wife's birthday (which she will celebrate on the ship), and a belated 15th anniversary for us (which we will celebrate a month before the cruise).

Our kids already know and can't wait. We went on our first cruise this summer, but it was a 4 day. We booked again while onboard and grabbed this date as soon as the 2009 dates were out. I was on the phone that morning and managed to get a secret porthole room. Now we just have to wait for 21 more months!

Right now, 21 months doesn't seem as long as almost 2 years. LOL We could tell our sons and not regret it, but our daughter is 6 right now. If we told her about the cruise, we, nor anyone we know, wouldn't stop hearing about it for the next 21 months! Our goal is to keep this under our hat until one year before. Then, we will start making our countdown chain. Here's part of the chain we made a couple years ago.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg259/yazee1/tripchain2006006.jpg

Congratulations on getting a secret porthole room. I know from these boards that's quite a catch. Are your sons 8 and 12 now or will they be on the cruise?

frndofpooh
01-21-2008, 01:29 PM
Our sons will be 8 and 12 at the time of the cruise (6 and 10 now). It's scary to think that they will be that old so soon! If your daughter is 6, I assume that your sons will be 12 and 14 at the time of the cruise, correct?

How did your kids like the Oceaneers' Club and Lab on your prior cruises? Ours loved them! By the last day, they wanted to spend almost the whole day there, other than a little pre-planned family time. For the next cruise, our older son will be at the upper end of the Lab, and our younger son will have just turned 8, so he'll be on the lower end of the Lab.

yazee1

Yes, Our oldest will be 14 on the cruise (a month shy of 15), and middle ds will be 12-1/2. They absolutely love the Lab but for different reasons. Younger ds likes the activities (except anything dancing or singing) but LOVES the electronic games. (Until this past Christmas, we didn't have electronic games in the house.) Older ds is more social and likes the organized games, karaoke, sports, parties, etc. One night, on our last cruise, dh and I were so tired and just wanted to go to sleep but we had to wait up for older ds who was at a Lab splash/pizza party on deck 9.

Lab overnight camp would have been heaven on earth for oldest ds. I am almost afraid the Stack won't live up to the same expectations since it seems like more of a hanging out place with less structure. Maybe, by the time we go, that will appeal to him more. I imagine there's a very good reason why the Stack is that way. DCL must know what teenagers like, I know I don't.

The first time we cruised, younger ds was a couple month short of Lab age, so we enrolled him in the Club. That lasted less than an afternoon. He has a more retiring personality than most little boys. He thought the little kids were bonkers and the noise rankled him terribly. He asked us to take him to the Lab. It was love at first sight. LOL

DD was only 4 the first trip, so she was fine with the Club but in small doses. The second trip, when she was six, she got a lot more out of it. I don't remember her begging to go to the Club, but she always had a good time and never paged us to come and get her. I guess she'll be old enough for the Lab this time around. That's going to be weird for us.

Off topic: Last night, we had company and we served Key Lime pie. It was almost as good as the Key Lime pie we ate in Key West on the cruise in '06, but eating it in Western Maryland on a frigid January evening just isn't the right setting. Know what I mean?

I might change my ticker. I like how precise your countdown is compared to mine.

Your younger DS sounds a lot like our older DS. He likes "cool" activities, but nothing involving anything that could possibly be associated with princesses. He also is a big fan of the electronic games. Like you, we held out for a long time before getting a video game system last Christmas (when he was 9), and we keep pretty strict control of when he can play. As a result, he was always happy to go to the Lab for free time so he could play their games.

I know what you mean about the Key lime pie. We've never been to Key West, but we've had enough Key lime pie to know when there are real Key limes in it. It's pretty hard to find up here. By the way, where in Maryland are you from?

Please don't be misled into thinking my son (or sons for that matter) like "cool" things. He's just anti-social. ;) . Seriously, younger ds is just one of those kids who is just as happy reading a book or playing with Legos as he is playing with a friend. He can be very uncool when he's playing with his sister or brother or telling himself stories out loud behind closed doors. He's the kind of kid other moms want their sons to be friends with because he's not rowdy.

We live in Frederick County. Not to be confused with Frederick County, VA which a friend of mine did and had the hardest time finding our address on the map when she wanted to come visit. We have friends near Harrisonburg, VA. Is that near you?

Hi, Chris. Yes, we're a small meet for now, not even enough to use this :grouphug: icon. If you don't mind my asking, what makes you say you'll probably be changing from the 24th to the 17th? Ideally, we would be sailing on the 10th. My inlaws' 50th anniversary, which is the main reason for this cruise date is on the 16th. We all agreed we didn't like the itinerary on that cruise though. So, we'll celebrate their anniversary on the 17th instead.

Simply down to school holidays that's all, however we too disliked the ports of call on the Western cruise, they all look like the middle east to me...:lmao:...We sailed a B&B on the Magic last October and had a great time and met some wonderful people along the way too (not sure they'd say the same about us,ok i mean me..:rolleyes1 )and were also on the REPO back to Florida in August....:)

Take care

Chris

Sorry, Chris, my careless grammar has led you to believe we didn't like the Western ports of call, but in fact, it was the Eastern Caribbean ports of call that we weren't interested in. Shopping and beaches don't interest us. More importantly, we didn't like the idea of 3 "at-sea" days. Dh has a one track mind when it comes to Disney Cruises. Ports of call mean opportunities to take a small boat offshore in order to go snorkeling or diving. It doesn't matter much to him what the scenery is like onshore unless it's something really spectacular.

Are your twins 15 now, or will they be 15 on the cruise?

Harrisonburg is about an hour away from us. Coincidentally, I was in Harrisonburg today for work. Even more coincidentally, I'll be in Frederick on Saturday for a visit to a family member who lives in Buckeystown. I guess it really is a small world after all!

Chris, How did your twins feel about the Stack versus the Lab? What kind of school holidays are celebrated in England in October?

FrndPooh, we've lived in Frederick county for about 15 years and Buckeystown is proabably the only place in Frederick county I don't know anyone. LOL. In my defense, there aren't that many people in Buckeystown. Or maybe, there used to not be. That end of the county has developed quite a bit. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you....

They really didn't much care for the clubs this time as they felt a little out of place, too old for the "kids" and too young for the older end so they tended to hang out with a small group of kids who used the pools and watched the shows (or watch Harry potter 47 times or "play" in our whirl pool bath). As for the holidays they only get 1 week in October but were allowed by law over here to take the kids out of school to suit us for a further 2 weeks, this year were coming for the REPO in August and we'll be in the states for 28/29 days and they'll only miss the first couple of school in September....:)

Chris - That's what I expected - a window of time when some kids will be too young for the Stack and too old for the Lab. It's impossible to know almost two years in advance if this will be the case with my oldest son. Would you say your twins still had a good time? Were they let down?

FrndofPooh, how was your visit to Buckeystown?

We had a good time in Buckeystown, but we were only there for for the day. You were right when you said it had grown. We hadn't been there in about 4-5 years, and it's much more developed than it was last time we were there.

Chris, I haven't formally welcomed you to our little group. It looks like it's just the three of us, but maybe we'll grow over the next 20+ months!

It is 1 year 8 months and 16 days until we leave home for the cruise . It seems like eternity, and it makes me laugh when I think about our first cruise and how we thought the time between booking and going seemed terriblely long. Consider that we booked in late January for a cruise in the beginning of April. :rotfl:

The second cruise, we booked while onboard the first one. Wait time 17 months. The hardest part of that was keeping it from the kids until a year before. Of course, the kids don't know about this cruise either. Dh and I will try to keep it a secret for the next 8 months. As it is, my daughter keeps coming over to me while I'm typing and I keep reducing the window so she won't read what I'm typing.

I predict that by March 1st, our group will have doubled.

:sad1: I just got an email from my MIL that my younger brother-in-law and his family are not going with us. I don't know why not. My BIL seemed really psyched about it when we last talked. They have a 5-1/2 year old and 3 year old triplets :dance3: . I can't begin to imagine what it's like to take a long trip in their family. Too daunting, perhaps.

Frndpooh, are you flying, driving or taking the Auto Train? We love the Auto Train, but I suspect it will be significantly cheaper to drive. The last I checked, even with the AAA discout, it would cost us about 700.00 on the Autotrain. Of course, depending on the price of gasoline a year and a half from now, it might be six of one/half a dozen of the other.

We're going to drive. We always drive to WDW. My parents live at the southeastern tip of South Carolina, and it's a convenient stopping point about 30-45 minutes off of I-95. Depending on how often the kids need to stop to go to the bathroom, it takes around 8-9 hours to get to their house, then another 5 or 5 1/2 to WDW or Port Canaveral. A few times, we've driven straight through (such as for our trip to WDW last month), but we usually stop. I've always been interested in trying the Autotrain, but the cost usually dissuades us.

Sorry to hear about your BIL's family. Although I'm sure you're disappointed, it's better to find out now rather than a week before the cruise after the plans are made and the payment is nonrefundable.

That's a sweet deal having your parents two-thirds of the way there and on the correct side of the state for a convenient visit. Have you ever picked her up on the way and taken her with you to WDW? I've thought about asking my mom to join us on the cruise but up until last December, her husband has been too sick to travel. Now, he's passed away. I wonder if she'd feel like a fifth wheel without him.

My mom lives in Florida, near Tampa, so we've driven to Florida a number of times but only twice straight through. Since Dh does most of the driving, when he says no more all-nighters, that's the way it is. I just can't stay awake after a few hours of driving. Things might be different this time. After a lifetime of thinking I hated the stuff, last year, I discovered that I actually like coffee. Who knows? Maybe, it's time to give driving straight through another shot.

One thing is for sure, the novelty of flying has definitely worn off. I remember when flying was part of the fun of a vacation. Now, even if it was the same price as driving, we would not be interested. LOL, I can't believe I'm finally old enough to say I remember the good old days about something.

That is a bummer about my bil and family, and your right about it being better to find out now. Each family is making its own arrangements for this trip, but my mother and father-in-law have offered to help pay for it. If any of us did cancel too late to get the deposit back, it could create hard feelings.

frndofpooh

My parents have Annual Pases and go to WDW more often than we do! We've gone with them a few times, or sometimes they join us for a couple of days of our weeklong trip, but we always drive separately from their house (we can't all comfortably fit in one car). Since they are also very familiar with WDW, they do their thing and we do our thing. We spend a lot of time together, but not all day every day. It's also gives us the oppoirtunity to have them take the kids for an evening to let DW and I go off on our own.

We also took my MIL last year in December. I get what you're saying about the "fifth wheel" concern, but we made an effort to include her in the planning and the touring to avoid that. We had to adjust our thinking a little bit, but it worked out well and everyone had a great time. Although she is on her own like your mother, my FIL passed away 17 years ago so her perspective may be different than your mother's. If she's up for it and your family is willing to change your vacation habits a little to accomodate her, then I say go for it.

I also agree completely with your comment about flying. I also remember the "good old days" of air travel, but they are long gone. We're in the process of trying to plan a trip to Dinseyland and San Diego in October and, of course, that would require flying. It's mainly to use up my frequent flyer miles that I accumulated years ago when I was flying more regularly. It's amazing the hassles and planning necessary for a simple flight. Our kids really would like to fly (they never have), and I'm convinced that going through the ordeal will cure them of any desire to do it again!

Your Disney trips with your parents sound great. It sounds like you have it down to a science.

I could be wrong, but I don't think you're going to get your wish concerning the airport experience dampening your kids enthusiasm for flying. At least, that's not the effect flying has had on our kids. Even though they've experienced flight delays, cancellations, full-blown security checks, turbulence, and even dragging their own luggage from one end of the Atlanta airport to the other in the middle of the night, they still think traveling by plane is pretty cool.

Thank you for sharing your experience about taking your MIL along with you on vacation. That's helpful. It is something we might do, taking my mother, when she's ready to do it. For now, she's too newly widowed. I just talked to her last night (we only talk about once a month). She's doing as well as can be expected but not ready to "go out and play". She did just go back to work (part/time) a couple weeks ago.

On another subject, I'm wanting to go on a shorter Disney cruise in September with my husband. The first time dh and I decided we wanted to go on a cruise just the two of us was for our 10th anniversary. Well, that was on December 31, 1999, and dh was convinced there was going to be a Y2K disaster. That plan was scrapped. The next time we started planning we got as far as deciding on an itinerary, and I was about to book it, when we wound up admitting to each other that we really didn't want to take our first ever cruise without the kids. (We really like traveling with them.) Although I didn't know anything about DCL, I knew that cruiselines had children's programs. My research led me to DCL and we agreed it was the best compromise. The rest is a story that you've heard a million times. We're hooked. Anyway, since we have no vacation plans this year and since my mom (who lives 2 hours from Cape Canaveral) would love to have the kids visit her, I think the timing is right for a parents-only cruise.

Your parent's only cruise sounds like a great idea! We've done some "parents only" trips but usually small things. There would be a Pouting Festival for sure here if we cruised without the kids. Not sure we could stand it!;)

My DW agrees with you about whether or not the kids will hate flying after the California trip. She thinks they will still be in love with the idea. I'll just keep hoping!

Well...there will probably be a Pouting Festival here too, but, it might also be the right time to tell them that if they are very good, we'll take them next time. ;)

I haven't booked it yet, but I did get the green light from DH. He and the boys have been away this weekend, and I want him to be with me when I book the cruise so he can see the available rooms and pick the one he wants. If they're available, I bet you he picks one of the same exact rooms we've had before. LOL. Is that a "guy thing"?

It's official. I booked a parents-only cruise for this September. Dh surprised me about the room request. He wants to do this cruise for cheap and asked me to book category 11 rooms. I can dig that. It's about 600 dollars cheaper for a category 11 than a category 6 on this sailing.

As for us, dh doesn't post here. In fact, I'm so sure he never visits this site, I can tell you what I got him for Valentine's Day. Hmmmm, this could get fun. ;) Actually, I (Mr. FoP) have been the one to post almost everything on this thread until recently. I do most of the posting related to planning our trips, and DW does most of the posting about everything else. She is by far the more active poster, but I scan the boards frequently and post occasionally if something relates specifically to us (like this thread!).

When we both posted around the same time, I was pretty surprised that the Dis let us both be logged in at the same time on two different computers under the same user name. We'll try to be more clear in the future, but here's a tip if you get confused - I tend to write more formally than she does. She's the fun one!

Without kids, the extra relaxation that you'll get each day may make a 4 day just as relaxing as a 7 day with kids!

Our last (and only) cruise was the 4 day this summer. We had a great time, but we certainly could have used a few extra days. As a result, we rebooked while onboard, and I immediately grabbed the 10/17/09 cruise the morning that the 2009 came out.

I know what you mean about leaving the kids. Our first time leaving the kids was for an anniversary trip to WDW (returning to the scene of our honeymoon), and both of our mothers stayed in our house with them for the week. It worked out fine, and later overnight trips were a breeze. I'm sure that your mother will do fine with them, and you'll have a great time on your cruise! :sail:

I know my mom will be fine. She just gets to be a little hyper-spazz when we come down to see her. She doesn't get to see us much (once a year at the most) and she wants to go everywhere and do everything, especially with the kids. It will be a matter of dh and I getting her to understand that the kids don't need a three-ring circus to be content. Oldest ds and our daughter like to bake with her. I think dd will surprise her with how well she can crack an egg now. I think by September she'll have the difference between whisking and stirring down, too.

My parents are divorced, and my father lives closer to us - about 3 hours away. The children visit overnight with him and his wife every few months. That's party time to them. Sugar, junk food, and more sugar all weekend long. Bedtime? I don't even want to talk about it. Dh and I don't get bent about it.
We're glad the kids have loving grandparents in their life.

I've had a sex change twice. I got a letter from DCL and I was addressed as Mister. I knew it must have been a typo, but I called DCL to make sure it wouldn't affect my reservation. The rep. changed my status to Mrs. I'm a girl again. Whew! I wonder how much of a hassle that would have been when it came time to check in.

Thanks for the bump. It's hard to keep this thread active when the cruise is still more than 18 months away. It must be even harder for you to focus on it when you have your parents-only cruise coming up this September. How is the planning going for September?

Hi everyone.
We'll be on this cruise.
We've booked a back to back for DH 50th birthday.
Haven't cruised before, but we have booked a 3 day on the Wonder for August this year.
We are from Kent in England.:)

Hi, There! How are you? It looks like even I have lost track of our thread. Thanks for asking about the Parents-Only cruise. We almost had to cancel it! :scared1: We've had some major financial stresses come our way thanks to the IRS's interest in our 2005 tax return (no, we didn't do anything wrong), two nonrent paying tenants, and both our vehicles have age-related maintenance problems. Dh and I put our heads together to pray and to plan and it looks like we're still going in September. I got a part-time job for the specific purpose of saving all my wages for trip. The cruise is already paid for, but there's all the other trip expenses. Those cost even more than the cruise!

It's great to see this thread come alive again. :yay:

Hi :)

I have narrowed down all the dates and such to the 10/17/09 cruise :)) Hopefully I will be making a deposit next week. I am so excited!! We are booked for our 8th trip to WDW this Halloween. I have been waiting for my youngest to turn 4 to take this cruise. We cruised 1x before on Carnival and HATED IT. I hope it's worth the money cause it's costing a few thousand more then we spend at WDW or spend at a resort somewhere.

My kids at the time of the cruise will be 4, 13, 10

Hi, Doberlady,

I hope you will be joining us for sure soon.

Our youngest was four the first time we cruised, too. She had a great time. Admittedly, the Club experience had to be handled carefully as it was new to her to be in that environment. She LOVED Scuttler's Cove and didn't want to be anywhere else on the island that day. It was a joy for all us to see the kids having a great vacation on our first ever cruise. We rebooked onboard and all the kids talked about was going back to the clubs!

Our sons will be 13 (3 weeks shy of 14) and 11 by then. Our daughter will be 8 by then.

Hello all. We are pleased to announce that we will also be going on this cruise. My wife, daughter, and I were suppose to go on the Oct 20th, 2007 cruise, but we found out that she was expecting and due on November 15th. So the whole family except for us went. This time we are going! We will probably have about four rooms booked among us all. The first room will be my aunt, uncle, and two of my cousins. The second room will be one of my cousins, and her boyfriend. The third room will be my dad, and two other cousins. I think that is what they are doing, but I am not sure. I only know the information about my room. My room will be my wife(28), myself(29), daughter(8), and son(23mos). We were debating weather or not to take son with us or not, but decided that for two hundred dollars more, why not. We will probably be in category nine with a porthole window. The rest of the family already has three rooms booked from the previous cruise(s) that they went on. I on the other hand, am a newbie. Just curious who everyone has booked through. I am looking into dreams unlimited, aaa, as well as dcl itself. Trying to find the best deal possible. Look forward to seeing everyone. FYI, we are all from Wisconsin.

Welcome Chris and family :))

I booked on Saturday morning with DU. I booked a few WDW trips with them and they are great. They saved me around $600 for the cruise vs booking with DCL directly. We are 5 me(45), DH (43), DD(will be 13), DS (will be 10) and last but not least DD (will be 4.5).

We booked 2 cat 9's to save us like $1200. We plan on coming down the day before and staying at a hotel at the port. We will use either Tiffany Town car or FL Tours for R/T carservice. My husband is not dealing with the (2) 1 way car rentals and bringing them back and taking the bus etc.......

I hope we can get a nice group for this cruise and have a meet and such that I see other cruise groups doing. I imagine as time goes on more people will book.

We are going to WDW in 5 months for the 8th time and I could KICK myself for not booking a cruise this year instead. Oh well, will give us something to look forward to.

Yeah for all of us!!:cheer2:

Welcome, firefighter chris! Glad to hear that you and your family will be joining us. We booked directly through DCL with the onboard discount during our last cruise. It worked out very well, and I expect we'll do it again next time. Only 17 months to go!

Anyone have any complaints about people posting every day? I just put 1000 dollars down for our room. We will also be flying in on Friday, and leaing on Sunday. No rush to get back to Wisconsin here. I can not wait til thr cruise. I will be in FL from July 2nd through the 9th, for vacation. Might have to sneak on over to Port Canaveral and take some more pictures of the cruise ship. Alright all, I worked 14.5 hours. Good night.

We are also going to fly in the day before and stay at a hotel at the port. We cruised once and fly in the same day and it was horrible. Our best friends and their 2 kids booked too. I am so excited about that. Our kids are best friends too.

We are headed to WDW in 5 months for the 8th time. I don't know how I will get through the next 17 months till the cruise. I already have full intestions of booking another while on the ship.

Chris- Did you book with Dreams?

What shall we call our cruise??

Looks like our thread has become more active in the last few days while I've been absent! :thumbsup2

Like everyone else, I wouldn't consider flying in on the same day as the cruise. Fortunately for us, we'll be driving. We'll drive down to my parents' house in SC the day before, then leave early the morning of the cruise for the last 5 hours on the road. We did it the same way last time, and we were able to pull into the port not long after they started letting people in. We got No. 3 for boarding and hopped on the boat long before noon.

Hi, Everyone,

I'm glad to see the thread reviving. I started this thread but I have NO problem with someone else renaming it or being the ringleader. I've had my turn at the wheel on our last cruise.

First cruise-We booked with AAA and it was a fine arrangement.
Second cruise-We booked onboard for the 10% discount and OBC from DCL and then transfered the reservation to AAA to take advantage of their OBC.
Third cruise - coming up in September -We booked through the DCL website. It's a four-day. There isn't much OBC for those but DCL gives 25.00 OBC and we opened up a Disney Visa account and paid it off in full in order to get additional OBC and a 50.00 rebate. Since we really didn't want a second credit card, I paid for the cruise with the card, paid the Visa bill immediately afterward and shredded up the card after that.
Fourth cruise- this one - Booked through DU for the double OBC special at the time.

We haven't arranged our transportation yet. We'll probably take the Autotrain. We'll definitely arrive a day early. I would like to hear the story of the horrible day-of-the-cruise arrival. Care to share it or is the memory too unpleasant to rehash?

Well, it's technically Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms!

Happy Wednesday everyone. Sorry I have not been posting too much. Been a super busy week at my job, with working fifteen to eighteen hour days. Well all of my family has transferred their reservations to dreams unlimited now. It looks like we will have five rooms onboard this cruise. One room will be my aunt and uncle. Another room will be two of my cousins. They are both in Category 10. My wife, daughter, son, and myself will be in one room. My cousin, her boyfriend, and their two kids will be in another room. Both of these will be Category 9. Last byt not least, my dad, uncle, and grandma will be in another oom. This will be a category 11, because we needed a handicap accesible room for my grandma. We have rooms 6647, 2606, 2607, 2608, and 2609. Thats the only update for today. Have a great day everyone.

Yes and no, when I have the time to get online, Disboard's DCL forums are the first place I go after checking my email. Lately though, my time online is limited. So, no I don't spend a lot of time looking for new pictures from the cruise reports boards.

I love to read trip reports (if they're well-written) and look at people's pictures (even if they're not well taken). It's been a while since I've been to the trip report board, I might head over right now.

Just writing a friendly hello. Had a super busy weekend with a wedding on saturday, and my sons baptism on Sunday. After some discussion between my wife and I, it was decided that it would be best to leave my son home. He would be 23 months at the time of the cruise, and my daughter will be eight. So my mother in law and father in law will be watching him, while my wife, daughter, and I go on the cruise with the rest of the family. Have a great Monday all.

Welcome to the thread and congratulations on booking your cruise! It is very exciting, and the excitement of going doesn't wear off after the first time. Trust me. This trip will be our fourth Disney Cruise ( number 3 will be a four-day cruise this September for just my husband and me).

We booked our first cruise about 3 months out and I spent probably 2 months on this board reading and posting and learning. I also bought a Passporter and read it over and over. Dh didn't appreciate the value of all this until we left for the cruise and I was prepared for a thousand things he knew nothing about.

You will be an expert by the time we leave and speak fluent DCL lingo. ;)

Not on the actual boat that I know of, but you can see the Wonder in Port on Sunday & Thursday (until 5:00 PM EST) and on the Magic on Saturday (until the same time). Here is the link...

Wow - I'm surprised to find this up already! Just booked today - myself, DH, DD - will be 7 at time of cruise & DS who will be 5 then. It feels sooo far away! I'm not used to booking anything this far ahead! Just booked over lunch today - had to get in before that fuel surcharge. Also just saw via UPS that my Barnes & Noble book order w/ my Passporter & my DCL cruise guide were delivered today!! The kids already know about it - they know we're saving our money - good excuse to get out of stuff sometimes! DH & I have cruised before, but not w/ DCL - it'll be a first for us. Just went to WDW the past 2 years, taking this one off. I have turned my kids into Disney nuts!! Just saw local fireworks this weekend & DS who is 3 now asked when Tinkerbell was coming! Can't wait to go!

Welcome to the thread KJF! I have no doubt there will be a lot more people posting with us by October when we're a year out. Even a year sounds like an eternity, and here we are at almost a year and a half away.

What cruise line did you sail before? Did you take your kids then? We have only cruised DCL. You can see from my signature line, dh and I are cruising without our kids this September. Yeah. Soon, I will start reading up on a few threads to get some ideas as to do a few creative things. I know one group did DIS Tag, where everyone makes or gets a small item and you have to "tag" the next person on your list after you have been tagged. If you still have people left that you have not tagged by the end of the week, you just go through and tag them anyways. It was kind of creative. Many people did things from their hometown. I was also thinking about some type of door hangar type deal. Do you guys have main seating or late seating?

Cool. We also have main dining. First we had the late dining, but then changed it to main didning. I am trying to get a few more posts in so that when Goofy4Ever comes online, she will see that I have been posting. I am trying to get my posts up to 40. Then we will be tied. I have no life outside of DIS and work. Just kidding. Wife is working. Son is at daycare. Daughter is at school. I was suppose to be cleaning. I will just tell my dear wife that I overslept. That should work, but I will probably still be in the doghouse.

This is true, very true. I just hate working second shift. I start at 3pm and dont get done until usually one or two am. Every Tuesday I get to leave at 11:30 pm, but the rest of the days are usually later. It sucks because by the time I get home, my family is sleeping, and by the time I wake up, they are all gone already.

My father was a paid firefighter for 35 years. I spent my whole life with 3 nights on 4 days off- 3 days on 2 days off. When he went in for nights we would have to eat dinner at 4pm. When we got older he was never home for holidays as he would take the younger guys with small kids shifts so they could be home with their little kids.

firefighter chris
05-28-2008, 12:36 PM
I wish it were that easy for me. Unfortunately I am a paid on call firefighter, well captain. Lol. So I have drills and meetings once a week, sometimes more. Then I am on call three days on, three days off. But I am a manager in a warehouse at a large beverage company. So I have a whole lot going on. I also used to work with the American Red Cross on what is called a Disaster Action Team, but have given that up due to my lack of time. It was much easier before I was married and had kids. But I will give up the fire department before I give up my wife and kids.

Presently, no required uniform here. Neither my husband nor I have had a career in law enforcement, military, or any kind of service along those lines. I've had a lot of jobs with a dress code and even a "career" where I dressed up, but presently my job is stay-at-home-mom and homeschooler. I have a part-time job at night in order to save up money for the cruise-related expenses. We wear a uniform. No, I don't work at McDonalds. ;) My husband is a mechanical engineer. His service to mankind and his country is not so easily defined, although he is a Scoutmaster. I guess he does wear a uniform after all. LOL

Fish extender folks -
As for fish extenders, the jury's out. I don't know if I'll make time for it. Probably not. On the other hand, if my kids get wind of the fact that it's something some people do, and it involves exchanging small gifts, they might take on that project.

Thread name folks-
As for thread names, my opinion is that thread names should happen naturally and aren't nearly as good when it's a forced issue. With over a year to go, if just the right name pops up, great. If not, I'll have been on 3 Disney cruises that weren't named (if this upcoming cruise doesn't have one by September) and they were no worse for the lack of one. Just my humble opinion on that.

I'm happy to see our membership growing and "meeting" others who've experienced the Magic before and newbies who are in for (hopefully) the best vacation of their lives. Since like most of you I love the Disboard and am very excited about the cruise, I'm here every day checking the thread. That doesn't mean you'll see a post from me every day, though. I only post when I have something to say.

Have a good day, all!

Hello to everyone,
My Wife and I booked this cruise with the on board booking agent on the may repo to our home in Los Angeles. My name is Alan (not aan that was I typo I can not fix.) I will 34 by that cruise and my wife will be 37. We have no children. We will be going to WDW for at least two nights before and back to WDW for at least 4 night when we get back to Port Canaveral. I work on the ground for Southwest Airlines at LAX and wear a uniform, although it is shorts and a polo. I am the guy who loves to close down Rockin Bar D every night. Just wanted to say hi and maybe I will get to meet some of you.

Greetings, Alan! Did you post a trip report on your repo cruise? I would love to hear about it also.

Our traveling group, so far, is my family (me, dh, ds, ds, and dd), my MIL and FIL, and my BIL who is single. We're hoping to get my husband's other brother to come too. He wants to go, I think it's his wife who isn't hot on the idea. They have four little kids. I think she thinks it really wouldn't be a vacation. We're celebrating my in-laws 50th and our 20th anniversaries.

Sorry guys I am not the best at doingtrip reports. I must tell you that was one ove the best, if not best vacation I have ever took. It was a blast. I would like to thank everyone for their welcomes. Goofy, I what a small world. I would be more than happy to answer everones questions about it, but let me start by saying I only got off the ship at CC and Aruba. At CC I had lunch then right back on, and in Aruba I went to a little bar right by the dock for a few hours. I really just wanted to relax and do nothing for 15 days, and that is what I did. My wife and I will be celabrating aniversary number 9. Though you would never know I am married as we are the opisates attract couple. SHe wakes up early and I wake up late. She goes to sleap early and does not drink at all, I will be closing Rockin Bar D every night and may have one to many. She will do differant things on the ship than me. It is weird but it works. We juast do our own thing.

you can't check air this far in advance. They only let you check 1 year in advance. Airfare will not be anywhere near that for NY-MCO.

Pretty stinking hot here in Maryland. If it was anymore humid we'd swim through the air. The pool we belong to doesn't open until the afternoon until June 14th when they go to summer hours :( but we were invited to go swimming tomorrow at our friend's house. So, after I get some sleep (I just got in from work), we're going swimming. One of the advantages of homeschooling is school's out when you want it to be out. LOL. Either that or we count swimming as gym.

  WOO-HOO!!! Only 15 months, 3 weeks!!!!!:woohoo: :yay:

Anyway, i was looking at the excursions and I have a question with the hours that are next to each excursion.

Certified Scuba Tour (4 - 4.5 hours)
A certified diver's delight! First, you'll dive Palancar Reef to depths of 70 to 80 feet after being briefed about the dive plan, points of interest and safety tips. Back on board, guests enjoy beverages and fruit en route to the next dive site, a shallower dive of 50 to 60 feet, determined by the captain. All scuba equipment provided. A certified dive card is required and guests must have completed one dive within the last two years.
Price: $94 (ages 12 and above) No one under age 12.

Dolphin Discovery Cozumel (7 - 7.5 hours)
Interact with dolphins for half an hour at Chankanaab National Park! After an educational orientation you'll enter the water via stairs to arrive on a submerged platform. You'll have one half-hour standing in waist-deep water to interact with the friendly marine mammals. Afterwards, stay and enjoy the rest of the park's offerings, including a Caribbean buffet lunch. Transportation is available every hour on the half hour.
Price: $135 (ages 10 and above) Child: $110 (ages 3-9) No one under age 3.

I dont understand.....It takes 7-7.5 hours to do the Dolphin Discovery???

:confused3 HELP!!:confused3

My dad and I are Gordon fans, while my wife and daughter like Jr. What a household it is on Nascar days. Well, I hope to see someone post something soon.

Well I am glad to see that Gordon didn't win :cool1: :cool1: If #88 can't win then #24 shouldn't either!!

All I can say is one word....Kyle!

Well Goofy4Ever, Gordon will come back and win the championship. Just a matter of time. But anyways. It is 451 days til our vacation begins. What has everyone else been up to? We need to be a little more lively than this.

Florida was hot when we were down there. On Saturday when we went to Daytona International Speedway, it was about 93 degrees fehrenheit at 11am. At 2pm, it was up to 105 degrees. By racetime which was 815pm, it cooled off to the low 90's. Wife and daughter had fun, as it was there first race. My dad and I had fun until Gordon spun. It was a great race though. Of course my father, wife, and daughter all slept in the car for the hour and half ride to the track. And can you believe the same three slept all the way home also. Going back turned into about a three and half ordeal due to traffic and road construction. I was tired!! But overall, it was fun.

I also took my father and wife and daughter down to the Disney Cruise Line. My dad has been on it before and I have seen it before. When my daughter seen it, she said, "OH MY GOD." I was like see Paige, you do not want to go on that do you? She was like oh no!!! But my wife talked her back into going. When I explained to her about the kids clubs all she said was how many days. Lol. She is looking forward to it.

Hi, nokidz. Welcome to the thread. I can see you have experience with the 4-day cruises. Dh and I are taking a 4-day Disney cruise this September (but you can figure that out from my signature). I'm wondering if we'll have enough time to really enjoy ourselves on a 4-day. We actually booked the four-day after the Magic Oct'09 cruise. At the time, twenty one months was just tooo long.

Well, I had looked about two weeks ago, and midwest airlines had round trip direct flights from milwaukee to orlando for 350 a person. This would be for this October, as we were just trying to see prices. This was flying in on a Friday, and leaving Sunday. Now that they have revamped there schedule, and cancelled a bunch of flights we are looking at no available flights into orlando, and a flight that goes into Tampa, but only Friday and leaves Friday, so that is not going to work. Due to short vacation times, we will probably be flying, no matter the price, but anything is possible at this time. I guess around October we will be making our final thought process. maybe gas will be cheaper by then. Let us all hope.

We'd much rather do a 7-day, but Boy Scout camps eat up a lot of his alloted vacation time. Next year, the vacation time allotment won't be any different so we'll probably spacebank our beach week and only take one vacation and that will be the October cruise.

If the only advantage to living in Florida was access to Disney Cruises, I don't think I would do it. Dh and I don't care for the climate. I do wonder about this. My mom lives in Florida and would be able to take advantage of the Florida rates when they are available. If a special Florida rate became available, could she book a cruise for our whole party (her included of course) at the Florida rate or does every member of the party have to live in Florida? Furthermore, we would need two rooms. Would there have to be a Florida resident in both rooms? It's probably been asked on the main board, I should try to find the answer for future reference.

Yazee - I am not sure of the answer, but I do know that my uncle is moving to Florida next month and when I asked a DCL Rep about the FL discount, she said that we have gotten the better deal because we rebooked onboard. If you would decide to takle the FL resident discount, you would have to cancel your ressie and by doing so you would lose the 10% discount and the OBC (if you rebooked while onboard, just like us). We decided it was not worth it.

Hi, Goofy. I forgot I posted about this question. Has it been over a week? I agree that if the Oct. cruise turned up on the FL rate list (highly doubtful), I wouldn't get as good a deal compared to booking it online and transfering the reservation to AAA for the additional OBC. I was thinking more along the lines of in the future. Never the less, your still right that I could book a dummy date for the future and change it and make out better.

That being said, I'm canceling my Dreams Unlimited reservation I have now for this cruise and then rebooking onboard. Then I'll transfer the reservation to AAA. We did that last time and because we need two rooms, wound up with over 600 in OBC between DCL and AAA. We also earned both Castaway member gifts and AAA gifts (nice DCL photo album). I've been checking the rates for our cruise and they haven't changed since we booked last January.

To all those looking at Midwest Airlines, good luck. I work for Southwest and from what some of our Pilots have told me, Midwest may be a thing of the past before the end of the year. Apperntly they barely were able to make payroll this last month. Well looking forward to seeing you all next Oct. We will be coming in two days before to WDW and then going home after 4 more nights at WDW.

Has anyone who has cruised before ever used "walkie talkies" on the ship to contact family members or friends on the different part of the ship? I know that your child has a pager.

Yes, we took our Motorolas on two cruises. They worked fine on the ship but we used them the most on Castaway Cay.

Your child doesn't get a pager, but you get one. The cast members can page you at the child's request or if the club or lab needs to contact you.

Did she elaborate on why she wishes they had walkie talkies. I figure we have over a year's wait to cruise, I have time for a story if you have time to tell it.

As for us, our two younger kids didn't have check out privileges the last time we cruised but they will this time around. I think the walkie talkies will be more useful than even before keeping track of our family's goings and comings.

By the way, I just noticed the trip ticker went from number of months to go to number of months and weeks to go. :)

Yes, she did. She was telling me that while they were at the pool, her husband went to the cabin and she stayed at the pool with her children and at that moment wishes she had a walkie talkie to tell him to bring the "whatever" she forgot.......She said I can't believe how much I rely on my cell when I am home to get in touch in an instant!! She said this sort of situation happened a couple of times while on the ship. She saw a lot of people using them.

I'm guessing this will be your youngest child's first cruise? Anyone stressing out about whether she'll be fully potty-trained by then? ;)

Our youngest is going to be 8-1/2 when we sail next year-almost old enough for check-out privileges in the Lab. It's hard to picture her in the Lab at all since she had just turned four the first time we went (still young enough for taking naps and a little bit of separation anxiety) and only 5 1/2 the second time (no naps and no anxiety).

Our sons will have checkout privileges (oldest is Stack age so that's a given), but our daughter won't. I can't remember if an older sibling can be listed as a designated person to pick up a Lab kid. I think I remember oldest ds checking younger ds out with our permission. I hope so.

We are cruising too! It will be me, DH, DS - 5 & 3 by then! I am one of those a bit stressed that my 3 yr old will be potty trained by then! He will have turned 3 in June, so I think it will happen! Especially since he sees big brother doing it!

Is anyone interested in organizing a fish extender trade while cruising? I'm really excited about doing this with my kids. this will be our 2nd DCL, the first was on a 3 day so not too many FE or door magnets.

There are 5 other families that will be travelling with us! We are super excited. Trying to get them on board with FE trade!

Can you believe its almost 1 year til we sail! Can't wait!

Hi, Mavdav! I'm sure your younger son will be a potty pro by October. No, we haven't made plans for an FE exchange yet. It's a bit early, but I'm sure there will be one. We didn't do one on our first two cruises, and I wasn't inclined to on this last one, but I changed my mind and I'm glad I did. It was really fun. I even made my own FE. I don't sew much, so that's significant.

Doberlady, I think you may have misunderstood what I wrote here because I never said it was too early to plan anything or talk about it. Seriously, please correct me if I missed it, but I don't remember reading anything more than a few people in our thread, months ago, saying they were up for it. That is why I wrote "No, we haven't made plans for an FE exchange yet." Based on how little traffic this thread has had in the past few months (probably because the cruise is year away and typically these threads don't get that busy until much closer to the date), I voiced the opinion that "It's a bit early".

I don't want anyone get the impression that I'm a humbug about FE exchanges. Let me clarify that we didn't participate in FE gift exchanges on the first two cruises because there wasn't one planned, not because we opted out. I'm pretty sure the FE's are a fairly recent tradition and predate the last cruise we took as a family. The reason we weren't inclined at first on this last cruise was because I didn't think I would have the time or money to shop for gifts and thereby uphold my part in the exchange.

As for planning, personally, I have already started shopping for FE gifts and have my radar up whenever I'm out for ideas for FE gifts to buy as I am not creative and probably won't make any.

We got off really easy with our second son. It was like you said about him watching his brother. He must have been watching someone because he was never "trained" as far as either of us (his parents) guiding him. One afternoon, I was at my computer when I heard little feet run past the back of my chair (we had hardwood floors). Next, I heard the sound of someone peeing in the toilet of the bathroom closest to my office, followed by the flushing of the toilet and the scampering feet running past my chair on their way to the living room. I assumed it was my oldest who was four at the time. I got up from my desk and went into the living room to tell him to wash his hands, but the child in the living room was younger ds. From that day on, he toileted like the rest of the nondiaper wearing population.

I of course want to participate in the FE but certainly do not want to plan it :lmao: . Some of the other groups made maps of the ship and highlighted all the cabins that were in on the FE. I thought that was cool and then you didn't have to go crazy trying to find everyone.

I do not sew at all and will probably wind up buying a FE on ebay. I am also going to start buying little things now that I see on clearance etc. Or I am going to think about something I can make.

I also am going to start tracking the airfare next week and as soon as (hopefully) it dips to where i want I am going to buy it.

We are going to Disney in less then 2 weeks and I got this air for under $170pp.

Did you see the non-sewing FE instructions someone posted on one of the monster FE threads? I used someone's "nonsewing" instructions to make my FE. They weren't completely idiot-proof but I managed to make a respectable looking FE. I think I spent 16.00 in materials including fabric, backing, Stitchwitch, a dowel, decorative jewels, and double wide trim (I forget what that stuff is called). Mind you I didn't buy Disney patches to iron on. I'll post a picture later. I have to go out for a bit right now.

Congratulations on the excellent price. What airline? I've rolled the dice with Airtran without too much trauma, but I feel better when I've been able to go Southwest. I've had good luck with Ding for my Florida trips. Last year was my mother's 60th birthday. I called her to ask her what to get her for her birthday. She laughed and said she wanted to see me. I didn't think it was possible, but as luck would have it Southwest had 79.00 each way for just the dates I could travel. I took my son, too. When my mom's husband died a few months later, I didn't think I could find a deal that good but I did.

Our kids have never been to Disney World. Depending on how this year goes financially, I'd like to take them after the cruise - do our own land/sea kind of vacation.

This is the FE I made without any sewing, just cutting the fabric and ironing the glue tape. I take that back. I did sew the jewels on because I couldn't find my glue gun. If I make our FE this time, it will have more pockets and more colors.

Does anyone know if other cruiselines do FE's because I think, if we cruise in 2010 or 2011, we might have to go with a less expensive cruise line. If I decide to buy and FE from someone for this cruise, I'd hate to never be able to use it again.
