the Contemporary. Yuck.

Let me preface by saying how much I always wanted to stay there when I was a kid. It was the one resort that I had always hoped to have the opportunity to stay in.

As an adult, I've stayed value, moderate and deluxe many times over on all counts. For some reason, the small handful of deluxes I haven't stayed in but I've visited, i.e. Grand Floridian, Poly and the Contemp, just don't appeal to me.

The GH just seemed too Alexis Carrington, not our style. Unless I got to get into a pool slap fight with Crystal, it just aint worth it.

Poly, sure one day, but I won't pay any high level of bucks to relive Greg getting cursed by the dreaded Taboo during a Very Brady Vacation... including Vincent Price in a cheesy styrofoam cave.

The Contemporary is very Jetsons. I'd definitely stay there if we each got our jetpack at check-in so that our commute to concierge was less than 1.2 milliseconds. And a robot monkey. I always wanted a robot monkey.

It's just that the Contemporary is ... u-g-l-y, you aint got no alibi, you UGLY. Every single time I've walked through that joint, it always evokes the days when I went road tripping as a wee one with the family in the early 70's and we thought we scored big when we found a hotel with a pool.

There, I said it. Even with the pics of the rooms, the place is ugly. Now, I do love the Boardwalk, Wilderness Lodge is awesome, AKL is gorgeous, the Yacht/Beach, albeit a little Alexis is much nicer. Sort of like Alexis on valium.... over a nice gin & tonic, heavy on the gin.

The Contemporary? I don't get it. I'm looking at various resorts for our next Disney vacation and I hovered over that one for a minute and thought, "hells no."

Anyone else either feel the same about the Contempt or perhaps another resort others love but you seem to despise?

While I'd agree with most of your points about the Contemporary I do have to say that I "get it". Actually, you get it too - you just didn't realize what the message was. :-) The Contemporary's theme is 'contemporary'. Or at least what contemporary was in 1970. Think sterile, big-city hotels of that era.

Sadly this just doesn't translate well to today. But you've got to love the view of the MK from the tower rooms.

You have me laughing at your tv reference comments. I do agree with you on the Contemporary, kinda. Since they updated the rooms, I think the rooms look nice. As for the rest of the resort, no thank you. I too would prefer WL or AKL any day.

I have to agree with you about the Dynasty thing at the GF, but I loved the Poly and I have to admit I'm a bit curious about the Contemporary. I will probably stay there one day. Just my 2 cents!

OP, I always knew that I liked you! ;)

We have had a lot of discussion of the Contemporary over the years... and how for many of us it holds no magic. Even after the rooms redo, it is just like a Hilton or Sheraton, and simply happens to have a nice neighbour.

The original Contemporary did have a somewhat cohesive theme with the Grand Canyon Concourse, Pueblo Room, Mesa Grande Lounge, etc. This theme was sadly diluted and eventually disappeared altogether with the changes over the years.

Unique? Does this look familiar? http://www.hotel-rates.com/us/colorado/denver/renaissance-denver-hotel.html

Factor in the lacklustre performance of the Concourse Steakhouse in recent years (formerly one of my favourites) and the continued dilution of theming (such as the rumoured pan-Asian restaurant) this hotel continues to be at or near the very bottom of my list of places I have stayed.

WOW! Someone has finally had the courage to actually say what I've always thought about the Contemp. I think I could like the Poly as the theming is pretty good and would stay there. GF is just, as you put it, too Crystal Carrington for me, but I think that's just the point there, what it was supposed to be. But....OMG! the Contemp is like a big, I dunno, can't even come up w/ something to describe it. At least on the Jetson's the buildings had more design.
I had to laugh at the U-G-L-Y, you ain't got no alibi, you UGLY reference. I've thought that lots of times too.

Well, I have to respectfully disagree and say that it is my favorite resort. I have stayed in every resort except Coranado Springs and Car. Beach. I love sitting in the Grand Concourse and watching all the activity. The monorail coming through the building is awesome. The activity of Chef Mickeys is so fun to listen to while sitting sipping a drink at the Outer Rim. I actually preferred the rooms the way they were before the refurbishment..I thought it went more with the themeing of the hotel. I haven't stayed there since they moved the Arcade and Food and Fun Center. I know my kids loved the Arcade and would spend much time and $ playing those arcade games.
I could see why some may not like the theming, but I live in an area that looks more like the Wildreness Lodge surroundings and I really enjoy the urban feel of the Contemporary.:thumbsup2

I'm just glad not everyone likes the same thing. I personally like the Contemporary and would like to stay there again.

And when it comes to the Boardwalk? My least favorite resort, but I don't call it ugly. Just not my cup of tea.

Thanks for sharing!

I wish more people felt the way you do about the CR...then there would be availability and discounts for me when I try to book a tower room!! At one time the theme was well-executed, though I guess now if we wanted "contemporary," we'd have to knock it down and start over! As far as it being ugly, well, beauty is clearly in the eyes of the beholder.

I LOVE the CR (don't care what it looks like from outside), and there is no other view on the planet like an MK view from the tower. Some of my finest childhood memories are of watching the fireworks from my balcony and waking up to the sight of the castle. I can't wait for an opportunity to share that magic with my family...but it's always all booked up for my dates!

I'm not interested in the GF, either, but not for your same reasons. It just seems very bland to me, like any other beautiful US hotel. Yes, it is lovely, but I don't need to be in Disney to experience beauty. When I go to Disney, I want to feel completely immersed in Disney. GF just doesn't make me feel that magic.

I wouldn't dream of staying at the YC/BC, because we spend most of our summer weekends at the shore, with a real Yacht Club and 2 real boardwalks from which to choose. But I can understand why they would appeal to others, and the location just can't be beat (except for the Poly, my favorite and definitely most conveniently located resort on property).

:rotfl2: Oh, Rick, you crack me up. And I feel the same way. Although I do have a secret desire to try the Contemporary at least once with one of those awesome MK views. I think that would make up for staying in a toaster. ;)

My family flat out refuses to indulge me, though.

I have to admit I hated the contemporary from the first time I saw it many years ago. Its a block of concrete with little on the inside. It feels empty, cold and dated which is the opposite to how it should feel, even the pool seems dull.
I love the Poly and GF though.

I love the Polynesian.:goodvibes
The Contemporary never appealed to me because from outside it reminds me of large buildings or skyscrapers. I work in Manhatten and see that everyday.
So on vacatiion I want somewhere that will take me away to another place and feeling.

That's how the Polynesian fits us perfect. :goodvibes

I've never understood the Contemporary either. We walked through it to get to the business center, and it seemed like a huge, empty, haunted mansion... well, maybe not haunted, but still, you just felt very alone, and it wasn't a good feeling in the cold and boring environment that the CR envokes... :(

I don't care for CR either. Doesn't help that every single time I've been in it there was construction of some kind.. either no ceilings, or a big mess in the middle where the new shop now is.

But, after seeing Wishes from the observation deck at Cali Grill, I must say I wouldn't mind spending a couple nights up there in the Tower with MK view.

From the outside CR looks, to me, like a government building. But the rooms...oh the rooms. I think CR's rooms are the ONLY rooms in all of WDW that don't look one of three types of grandmothers decorated them: prissy granny, country granny, or off-her-meds granny.

RickinNYC
01-13-2008, 03:10 PM
See, I just don't care too much about whether the view is of the MK or of the parking lot at the local Super Walmart. I don't spend too much time in the room and when I am there, I'm usually sleeping, counting all the little dollar signs as they float into Mickey's bank account.

If the view is important, by all means, yes, I guess the Contemp can't be beat. But the bleakness of the resort evokes too many memories of my pal Logan and when he had to run like the wind to avoid being put to sleep on his 21st birthday. And yes folks, Soylent Green is people. Tasty people, but people nonetheless.

Sure, the resort is great for location, location, location. But someone please throw a little decore into the joint. Have my people call your people.

While I may not agree with some of the comments people have made about the Contemporary, if that's the way you think I am not going to try and change your minds. Plus if there are a lot of people who don't like it then that means more rooms would be available for those guests who do like to stay there.

Now to answer the OP's question I really don't like the Yacht & Beach Club Resorts. I have visited there a few times and I don't get the hype. They look very nice on the outside, however the inside felt like it had no atmosphere and it also felt like a very boring place to stay since there is never anything big happening.

And that is what we discussed last week - yes, it is a MK view, but it is also a BIG parking lot view in that MK view. In fact, I believe that New Jersey, Anne and I were comparing my New Jersey parking lot view to the CR parking lot view!!

Well, no, not really. They have conventions and weddings. There are several restaurants and bars. Plus there is an entire Boardwalk outside the hotel. And a little pond called Stormalong Bay

I was meeting jdvm for a drink in the Crew Cup Lounge a few months ago and had a great time sitting in a rocking chair watching all the things going on. In fact, I enjoyed myself so much that I was late for our drinks! (sorry John :flower3: )

where to start..........

The Contemtorary happend to be my favorite resort, so as you can imagine this is not exacly what I want to be reading on my Sunday afternoon. With that being said fine, hate the contemporary if you want, it only helps all of the CR fans. Gives us better chances of getting in. Some people just don't know what they are missing, but that is what makes Disney so great, don't like CR ok, there are lots of other resorts. Oh yeah, it is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen, yeah I'm dead serious.

I've heard it called the Logan's Run hotel, the Convention Resort, and the Concrete Resort.

Although the CR rooms look nice in all the pic's that we have seen we still would not want to stay there. It's just not for us. However we do like the YC and the GF. The YC had a lot of things for us to do, the Jr. Suite that we had was very nice with a fantastic view of SAB, love the rocking chairs and speaking of SAB. Well that speaks for itself. We would definitely go back. The GF is our favorite hotel. we just love everything about it. But then the YC and GF are not for everyone either. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and thank goodness for that. The world would be a boring place and besides than we would have nothing to chat about.

I like the architecture and the pictures of the newly remodeled rooms but after our one stay in the North Garden Wing I have no desire to stay there again. It was by far one of the noisest rooms, didn't care to hear everything that the people above were saying, didn't like hearing our neighbors snoring at night and didn't like the lack of response from the front desk in addressing anything we inquired about. I too had always wanted to stay at the CR and maybe we will again one day stay at the CR but only in a tower room or in the new building that is going up. :)

I have to say I dont like AKL. The rooms are horribly small and the upgrade for a savannah view is nothing to brag about! We are staying at the CR for our upcoming trip. Again, I agree it has to do with personal preference. My ds2 is slightly obsessed with trains and is going to love the fact that the monorail goes right through our hotel. I'm sure later in our trip adventures our tastes will change as our children grow up. We sure do like CR's convenience for travel back to the resort from MK for naps as well.:)

We stayed at CR in 2006. My son REALLY wanted to stay there (still always asks to go back) and I was a little bit, um, not all that thrilled about staying there. Well I can say that we had the BEST vacation there, so much fun. I really enjoyed the remodeled look. My oldest walked in and said, "This is fancy, I like fancy!" LOL.

The pool - eh - not a fan but I was actually quite surprised how much I enjoyed my stay there.

I can understand the feelings though.

However, I for one, can't STAND the values. We do them now and again to either stay cheap for a weekend or because I have yet to try them all (one to go) and every time we stay we think we would be better off off-site.
They just don't do it for us.

Our resort decision are based on location and transportation, so Contemporary and Polynesian (and twice at the GF) are the ones we have stayed at. We have stayed at the Swolphin for a night or two several times and if we were going to stay in an Epcot area resort, it would be there. The better price for the same area as YC/BC/Boardwalk is too good to pass up.

As far as we are concerned, the Contemporary's strong points are location, room size, room views, room decor, and stores. The pool is fine for us, but I know some don't like it.

The way a resort looks on the outside really doesn't factor into our choice.

I stayed at the Contemporary the first year it opened. As a small child, I thought that it was just the coolest place ever. I have memories of watching the monorail come in and out of the building, meeting the characters while eating breakfast, playing air hockey and skee ball in the arcade and having my caricature done. I also remember getting a pair of cool earrings that were mini versions of the Contemporary building (wish I still had them as I'm sure they'd be worth something now!). Good times. Good times.

These days I find myself feeling the same way as the OP. I visit only to take DS7 to Chef Mickey's or for a wonderful meal at CG. I have no desire to stay there again, preferring the Polynesian over anywhere else.

did it come up yet how CR kind of looks like a big toaster?

Well, I posted this a few months ago in response to some DVC Contemporary discussion....

'well, there is this website for Disney freaks... and then this is this hotel shaped like a toaster... people either love it or hate it.... they are rumoured to be building a giant croissant next to the toaster, but I keep telling people that it's just a parking garage... and croissants don't fit into toasters anyways, so why would they put a croissant next to a toaster?.... and then it gets kinda weird! apparently Disney has managed to get their four fingered paws on some sort of nuclear device! I don't know what they plan to do with it, but someone let it slip, so I had to stay up all night researching this.....'

Seriously though, I appreciate the fact that we can discuss different resorts here and not take preferences personally. I said it back on page one, but this time I will say it in English - to each their own taste

AHHHH! You are so correct OP! The CR just doesnt 'open its arms' and welcome you. When I look at the GF and others, they seem so welcoming. But as another poster pointed out, the idea was for a futuristic contemporary design...so in that respect, I guess, well done for that time period.

We have never stayed there......but guess where we will probably stay in Oct 08, lol.....yep the CR! lol I am sure that when I get there the inside will be soooooo Disney like...right??? :confused3

I have to agree I don't like the looks of CR resort at all. I do love California Grill and Chef Mickey's though. Also I love the stores. I think it's just too loud in CR with the monorail. restaurants and lobby.

GF is alright, I guess I would stay there but I like Poly better. The theme is just more appealing to me. I would happily stay at YC/BC, GF,Poly, WL, or AKL. I have not been to a moderate or value resort yet. But from what I have seen CSR appeals to me most.

:rotfl: Great post, OP.

I'm also loving the "granny" room design comments. I really do not want to pay $$$ to stay in many of the Disney resorts that look just like my mothers bedroom, many of them the '80's version of my mothers bedroom, YUK!

I'm a Poly girl at hear myself, I LOVE the location and the theme really appeals to me, but last trip the room was SO dirty really it was unbelivable for that kind of money. If I go back I'll only stay concierge so someone on staff is available to make sure the room is clean. Sad but true.

So this year, we's staying at Contemporary. As someone else said, my priorities are 1. LOCATION and 2. Square footage. And given a choice, I'm gonna take the contemporary in all its toaster looking glory, over paying twice the price to stay at GF in my mothers bedroom! The one thing that really appeals to me about GF is the layout with the sinks outside the bathroom, call me crazy but that is a big drawback to the Poly and Contemporary. But I really don't think I can take the decor over there just a little too loudly floral for my tastes, sorry.

Although I don't like staying there, I always enjoy the monorail stop at the CR when returning from the MK while we're staying at another monorail resort. Not sure why but something about the monorail going thru the lobby of the CR just seems to say "Now you're here at WDW!" :confused3 It's very Disneyesque.

Now, here's the thing... if I had a kid that really wanted to stay at the CR, sure, I'd do it without question. Well, with some question, but not directed at the kid. I'd just ask myself, "WHY WHY WHY? Don't you know you're of the age that you want to be leered at by building size dalmations and gigantic Mickey phones???" But I'd bite the bullet and swing it.

But, since kids aren't in the pic and the resort choice is up to me and the other half, we would opt for the WL, the AKL, the Boardwalk, even PO Frenchquarterlandingsnotdixiebutreallyiswho'skiddi ngwho? Yeesh, I think we'd likely even pick the Professor and MaryAnn's love child, aka the Caribbean Beach.

But you guys are right, thank God for variety. The CR is just not for me, no matter how you slice it. Unless I get the jetpack or the robot monkey, or even Rosie, I'm not interested.

And that is a 180 degree reverse of opinion from what I used to want. I used to want to stay at the Contemp big big big time. I used to want to so much I'd be green with envy at anyone who dared tell me they themselves were staying there. I used to stare at you people with your CR room keys and give you "I hate you" glares of envious rage. I wanted to knock you down and run off to my WL shuttle bus. You and your rissle rassle frissle frassle monorails and boats and WALKING and stuff back to your resort.

Now, meh... not so much. I went to the California Grill, had my I-can-get-cheaper-sushi-in-midtown-Manhattan fancy schmancy sushi and saw the fireworks. I strolled the grounds and the kinda-sorta-Holiday-Inn-of-the-future-if-it-were-1974 pool. I had breakfast at the Kids Tackle Mickey Free buffet. I shopped in the "hey isn't this the same stuff at the All Stars?" gift shop.

And I thought, so that's the hoopla? Really?

Please note: The above and all my posts on this thread are written tongue in cheek. I still don't like the CR, but I'm just sayin'... but tongue in cheek nonetheless.
