Deluxe Dining Plan - salads ?

I assume salads are extra and not included with entrees - but can they be substitued as an appetizer?

At dinner salads can be used as apps but at lunch the salads are considered entrees by the computer so you can't. In some cases where the salad was like $4 it was still a no go even though the app we ended up getting instead was $10.....
