I've done it Nat. Not sure if it's different in England. I was advised I had to be available for one week. You are given a number that you ring each day to see if you are needed or not.

My Dad did it once. I think it is two weeks in England although it depends on the case, if you get put on a case that goes on for weeks you have to do that many weeks. I doubt that would make a self employed person do that though.
I think it is mainly a lot of waiting around.

My hubbie did it a few year's ago. He had to wait in a large room and if his name was called had to go on that jury. He was able to claim back lost bonus for the 2 weeks he had to be out of the office but needed to get it signed by his Regional Manager.

My mum & sister have both done it. My sister more recent she had to attend everyday and wait to see if she was going to be called upon. She was both my mum & my sister had to attend for a week.
I think my sister was able to apply for travel expenses and possibly a bit in lost income.
My dad has always wanted to do it but so far has never been summoned:goodvibes

I have done it once, but a while ago now, when I was a student. It basically involved a lot of sitting around every day, waiting to be called. Only got called once, got sworn in before lunch, then the guy changed his plea after lunch and that was the end of my only case.
I was lucky to be with a lovely group of people - we spent our mornings doing newspaper crosswords together, and were usually sent home after lunch every day. Take a good book with you.
Sara. :)

My DH had to do it approx 2 years ago.
He got picked twice... sworn in once... and then the case was thrown out.
As everyone has said, it involves a lot of sitting around... so make sure you have a good book or a few magazines!
Good luck with it.

I did this over 20 years ago, and I still remember all the sitting around. I hope you get a juicy case - mine was boring, breaking and entering, and it only lasted a couple of hours

My step mum did it a couple of years ago, she did it for 2 weeks and it was a really horrible sexual abuse case. :sad2:

Yes you can claim expenses and also possibly child care costs, but as alot say you can be left waiting around alot. I can't wait to be called for jury service considering the job I do :teeth:

No that was taken away a couple of years ago, same for several other professions as well such as Dr's.

I was supposed to be doing it this week but my boss said she "couldn't do without" me so I have had it deferred and will now be doing it in November.
I used to be a criminal defence lawyer so I have seen my fair share of trials but it will be interesting to see it from a juror's perspective at last. I always wondered what they were doing while I was waiting for them to reach a verdict

Heavens to Betsy Claire. This is exactly the reason I don't want to do it (I'll declare a conflict of interest - do you think they'll buy it?!)

Lol, they may do but often you serve in a different CC area to where you work so unlikely to know anything about the case or people involved!!
