Obviously this will be done again too, given the current trend.
Now let's see-who should get the part??
I've got it!! Jennifer Lopez!!
And Bert?? Nobody better than Christopher Plummer!
I'd pay to see this one in a heartbeat.

Why not cast Brittney Spears in the title role wearing a tube top and hot pants?
If this is going to be ruined, go all the way.

So what's the story behind the sequel? Mary (JLO) and Bert (Christopher Plummer) are living together in sin when a grown up Jane (Britney) comes to live with them as she is pregnant. Mary takes her through the highs and lows of being pregnant (just a spoonful of sugar helps your breakfast stay down, Let's go try Lamaze). A sure winner!
nah, Live actors cost too much.

Michael would be played by Robert Downey Jr. His character would just have been paroled following his murder of the bird woman. Mr. and Mrs. Banks would have fallen on hard times, having invested heavily in a company selling ice to eskimos and are now homeless.

One bit of interesting reality.
P.L. Travers, the author of ‘Mary Poppins’ is still alive and retains a firm grip on all the rights. Disney has been pleading and threatening for over a decade to pry them away from her. Rumor has it that even Michael Eisner made a pitch to her personally in London a few years back.
By all accounts she was never happy with the thought of any making a movie from one of her books to begin with. It’s also rumored she hated Julie Andrews in the role – she didn’t fit the author’s concept of the character.
The moment the rights are acquired, I’d expect to see a lot of ‘Poppins’ projects start up.

I had always heard that she disliked Dick Van **** as Bert, but felt Julie was fine as Mary. When she apparently saw the film, she said to Walt, "That Andrews woman is great as Mary, but I don't like Bert one bit. When can we reshoot?" (not exact quote), to which Walt smuggly replied with a half smile that the movie rights belonged to him and did not have to meet her requirements.

Mrs. Uncleromulus saw this thread. She insists that Madonna is the only possible choice for Mary.
For Bert, who better than Harrison Ford!!?

When I first started reading this, I wanted to vomit. Now I'm just laughing. Once the reality sets back in, I'll want to vomit. Yuck! I hope the creator holds fast to those rights.
P.L. Travers passed away in 1996.
In all seriousness, the only person I would like to see play Mary is Emma Thompson. Hugh Laurie would be great as Bert. (He played Jasper in "101 Dalmatians," and the father in "Stuart Little.")
I'd like to see Mary in another home, where the wind took her after she left the Banks household.

I thought I saw Mary Poppins during a brief nanny encounter with the Simpsons, where she was employed under the name "Sheri Bobbins." She charmed the family and sang songs to them, but eventually the Simpson family proved to be too much for her. At the end of that particular show, "Sheri Bobbins" took flight with her umbrella, only to be sucked into the jet engine of a low-flying airplane.

I was going to say she had to have passed away at some point, I know she was born in 1899 so if she were alive she'd be about 107

According to an article in The New Yorker, before she died, PL Travers, in order to prevent Disney from doing anything more to Mary Poppins, made a deal with Sir Cameron MacIntosh, producer of such musicals as Les Miserables, Phantom, Cats, Miss Saigon, etc., to do a musical version of Mary. She died, and Sir Cameron went running and signed Disney as co-producers. It's supposed to hit Broadway within a year or two.

By the way, anybody ever read any of the books? I found them dreadful. Mary Poppins is an incredibly unpleasant person. Probably more realistic, but still....

Bert has to be played by a multi-Faceted, award winning dramatic actor with with grace and poise of Fred Astair, the charm of Jimmy Stewart and the comidic genius of Art Carney. The only person that can fill that shoe is....Adam Sandler.

I kind of like the books. The Banks family has more children and Mary comes back. I seem to remember twins in a pram at one point.
The musical is playing in London now.

Ashley Brown (the Belle that just got off Broadway) will be playing Marry Poppins on Broadway. It opens Oct. 14. I disliked the books also.

Mary Poppins the Musical will actually be hitting Broadway in October. One of my daughters friends will be playing Jane Banks (her name is Katherine Doherty.) Ashely Brown (formarlly Belle in Beauty and the Beast on B-way) will be playing Mary Poppins.
