View Full Version : Food allergies and dining plan

We haven't used the dining plan since 2006, and my milk, egg, and peanut allergic DS was under 3 at that time, so wasn't on the dining plan. We are going back in october of this year. I am interested in hearing any recent reports on food allergy substitutions and the dining plan.

Since dessert is included in the dining plan (and I know my DH will want dessert), has anyone had an experience where they did not have an allergen free dessert available?

What other experiences have you had?

I'm also interested in knowing this too - I am considering the DDP for our upcoming March trip and my younger DS has dietary restrictions/considerations.:thumbsup2

We went to the world for a surprise birthday for my DD who was turning 6. She was recently diagnosed with a Dairy and egg allergy. She has not been able to eat her favorite foods since. We asked for dairy and egg free pancakes one morning at the Hotel and THEY MADE THEM FOR HER!! The chef said no problem, just give us 10 minutes. Every morning she had some great food she could eat. You can email renda.bennett@disney.com She is the special diet coordinator and can help you without a problem.

I just wanted to mention that I plan to call the TS restaurants and arrange for a dessert for my DS that I know he'll like. Sometimes he has been offered just one thing (tofutti - though he doesn't have a dairy allergy) - and he doesn't like tofutti. It then becomes extremely difficult for the rest of us to justify eating dessert while he sits and looks at us with a sad face until we can get him something he likes. I have found that by calling I can arrange something that they may not normally carry for dessert (like an Itskadoozie popsicle) - something he likes and enjoys.

Dessert has generally been the most difficult part of the meal to get right (sometimes too because he was so young - sometimes hard to guess what he will want in advance).

My DD8 is allergic to peanuts and nuts and this April we will be using DDP for the first time. To be honest, we haven't used it on previous trips BECAUSE of the allergy. I was afraid that they would be less willing to make substitutions and I'd have an unhappy child at the end of every TS meal -- as Carol G. said, dessert is always the hardest. This trip however, we are traveling with a much bigger family group and will be using the TS meals as a way to touch base with everyone each day. I'll be sure to post here after my trip to let you all know how it goes. I think Carol G. has the best idea, call ahead to arrange for a safe dessert to be available. I heard a rumor that the Mickey bars are peanut and nut-free now...my DD will be over the moon if it's true!

I posted the ? about snacks and desserts for those with allergies over on the DDP board. No replies yet!

The Mickey ice cream bars were safe the last time we were there (October 2007) and we had them on the Disney cruise in Oct. and that was fine. I haven't gotten the latest info from Brenda since we're going in March. I'm guessing they are still safe though and will be this Spring but I"ll find out for sure before we head off.

If I cannot get good answers about safe snacks and CS desserts I will call Brenda and talk to her about it. I would really like for the Divvies (at least the 2 pack of cookies) to be a snack on the plan. We never normally get dessert at the CS places so I have no idea what the desserts usually are. I'm guessing cookies and the like - which are not safe for his peanut allergy.

He is also a type 1 diabetic. I generally don't bring that up as he can eat desserts in moderation (does not have to be sugar-free) but there are some things that are better than others for him (especially something where we know the carb count). I guess the bottom line is that I'll just buy OOP for him whatever I need to but I'd prefer to get what we paid for.

It would be nice if there was a spot in each park where they had some items for those with different allergies, etc to use as substitutions on the DDP. They did an AMAZING job for William at the MNSSHP - we stopped by Guest Services on the way out and told them about his allergies (most of the candy handed out was not safe or much of it was). They gave him an amazing bag of nut free items that he was over the moon about!:thumbsup2

Thanks for all of the great responses. We too had a great experience when DS was 2 y.o., I am glad to see that Disney is still doing a super job of dealing with allergies. I will definitely take the suggestion of calling ahead, and asking specifically about dessert. Has anyone ever had any restaraunt make a dairy free, egg free, nut free cake or cookie?

Disney was the best vacation we've ever taken regarding food allergies. NEVER has my egg, milk, peanut and tree nut allergic daughter been so accommodated. Be sure your dining reservations are all flagged for the allergies. Several chefs called me AT HOME before we left to discuss the allergies. Also Brenda Bennett of MK food service was extremely helpful in emailing me pages and pages of information on foods/ingredients available for allergic guests and where in the World to find them. Tofutti ice cream was available at every sit down restaurant. Divvies (egg, milk, nut free) cookies and snacks were available at several locations. Soy milk was everywhere- even at counter restaurants. If you don't see it, ask. They have it.

That is GREAT! And Disney has them too...EVEN BETTER!:woohoo:

Definitely call Brenda Bennet ebfore you go to find out where they sell Divvies. We had a hard time finding them on our last two trips. The snack bar at OKW's pool had them one day, but not the next. They probably don't restock them as often as they do other snacks since they probably don't sell out as fast.

My DD is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. At most TS places, she gets plain vanilla ice cream for dessert. The chef at WCC sent Divvies chocolate chip cookies to our table with her ice cream. DD was thrilled!

Someone on the DDP board posted this:

We then went to Main Street Bakery and I was told that anything in the case could be used as a snack. So I got an apple turnover and DH got a bag of caramel popcorn from the gluten free rack. I was expecting to be denied at the register, but both items went through as snacks.

I'm hoping that is the Divvies caramel corn - I know they sold it there in October '07.:goodvibes This is someone on the 2008 DDP.

I'm telling Brenda when I call in March that they better load up on the Divvies - I can see a lot of our snack credits going there! Dole Whips seem to go through as snacks too - I believe those are nut free but need to check.

I'm guessing the brownie is the sugar-free one and the cookies are the Divvies cookies. The Divvies choc. chip cookies is made without nuts, milk or eggs and they are *wonderful*.:thumbsup2

Is the soy milk vanilla flavored or plain? My DS is allergic to dairy, eggs and peanuts. He LOVES vanilla soymilk, but he's never had the plain kind. If they only have the plain kind, that's okay, but I need to give him some before our trip, so he can get used to it.

All of the brands of milk substitutes that I have seen are egg, nut (except hazelnut and almond which are free of other nuts) and dairy free. There are also rice, hazelnut and almond substitutes. My one indulgence is the chocolate flavoured almond milk. I never had soy flavoured but the rest are good tasting and I used to use rice milk on my cereal.

When we were there in 2006, the only time we got soymilk was from room service at the Beach Club. It was vanilla, but I can't speak for anywhere else. Call or email Brenda Bennett, and she can help you.

If there is one thing that Disney does exceptional well it is deal with special dietary needs. My son has a milk allergy and they have always treated him well. In most cases the chef will come out and talk to you and if necessary make a meal special. All of the sit-down restaurant have an area in the kitchen they keep clean to prevent cross contamination. The more advanced notice you can give them the better prepared they will be. For my sons birthday they where able to produce a milk free cake. Although every restaurant does an exceptional job, the chef at Boma's when out of his way to accommodate my son, providing 4 milk free deserts. Lets face it for an 8 year old, dinner is all about the deserts. There is also a person in food preparations who can e-mail you more information (sorry I forget how I found her). Lastly every counter service restaurant has a book under the counter with all the ingredients.

I received an e-mail from Brenda Bennett yesterday with tons of great info. Also, she had forwarded my son's allergy information to each of our ADR restaurants. I only wish everyone was as allergy-friendly as Disney appears to be.

Does anyone know if there are any convenience stores on-site where we can buy a carton of silk to keep in our fridge? We are staying at the Poly, and won't have a rental car. I don't want to place an order with Garden Grocer if I can avoid it, but it'd be nice to have some silk on hand in our room.

What a great site! For those of you who have let your allergy kids eat -did you feel very confident -and were there any problems? My 13yr old milk allergic daughter is thinking about her options at disney for July.We usually stay at a vacation club and cook. She loves to go to the Disney restaurants but does not eat. I am terrified of dealing with anaphylaxis on vacation. But what a joy if she could eat! Cross contamination is my biggest concern-who does the cooking for these kids?

While allergy accommodations are very good they are not prefect. As a diabetic who is also severely reactive to nutrasweet and sugar alcohols there has been very little for me to have as a dessert. All the prepared stuff is made using the things I can't tolerate. Only a few times have a chef made me an acceptible dessert. I had them made at the Grand Floridian, AKL Boma and at Ft Wilderness (but it came from the GF chef). Grand Floridian made me a whipped cream with berries sweetened with splenda, Boma made me chocolate dipped strawberries, and at Ft Wilderness I had a birthday cake made with splenda (a ginger cake) Other than that nothing and a few times waiters have tried to pull the wool over my eyes by saying they didn't have the label for me to verify the ingredients but they were sure it was fine. Nope. Didn't eat it. I have had the best success when I have informed the restaurant well in advance of my needs.

They have been great for me and others in the past. My son is anaphylactic to to milk and eggs, and at the time we went in 06, we also were avoiding peanut. The chef always personally came out to talk to us at any table service restaurant, so we could personally talk to them about the severity of the allergy. Here is a link to another thread from last year where I posted my trip report about half way down the page.

My younger son is anaphylactic to peanuts and he has dined in many of the WDW restaurants without problems. I find table service easier than counter service (though CS can be done). I also find it helpful to talk to the restaurant in advance especially about desserts and arrange for them to have something he likes.

There are many of us here with severely allergic kids (or allergic adults) and there are sometimes issues but I've seen very few reactions reported. Since she has a single allergy and it is something not quite so esoteric it should be easier than for someone with multiple allergies or unusual allergies.

We are leaving for our trip in less than 2 weeks. I've got all my reservations made, I've connected with Brenda Bennett a couple times and I feel like we're basically ready to go. There is just one last thing that I need to find out. Maybe someone here can help me. Is there anywhere on-site that would sell a 64oz carton of Silk to keep in our hotel room fridge? I don't want to place a Garden Grocer order for one item. Our plan is to eat cereal in our room in the morning, but that's not going to work if we don't have Silk. My son is allergic/anaphylactic to dairy, eggs and peanuts. Also, we won't have a rental car, so we can't make a quick run to a grocery store.

I was last there in November 2007 and they were awesome. I'm allergic to strawberries, tree nuts and mushrooms, and I'm also a vegetarian. They were very accommodating and very knowledgeable about food allergies. There was maybe twice where the chef wasn't sure about a new menu item so they double checked. I don't need to tell you how nice it is not to have someone guessing.

Between the strawberries and the tree nuts, that eliminated most desserts that I could eat. I had a lot of vanilla tofutti that week

I don't know where you are staying, but room service is an option (but may be an expensive one). They brought us a large (16 oz??) glass of soy milk when we got breakfast one day. It lasted us a couple more days for cereal. You could always dilute it out a little with some water, and might make it last another day.

WOW! 6 years! You are going to be addicted to Disney just for the dining freedom. We joined Disney Vacation Club (DVC) primarily because Disney is the best vacation for us due to the allergies, so we plan on going often.

Itsakadoozie popsicles are huge multi colored popsicles. I think they are made by Nestle. But they are milk free - just colored sugar water like the ones you get at the grocery store.

I am not sure about the brand of soy milk, but Brenda can probably answer that.

I am not sure about Earth's Balance, but most grocery stores carry Smart Balance Light - that is what we use. www.gardengrocer.com will deliver directly to your hotel room, and they carry smart balance light.

I hope you and your daughter have a GREAT allergy free trip!

Hi all-was there over Thanksgiving 07 and we did not see Divvies anywhere, which was a disappointment since DS (peanut/treenut/fish) was so excited to hear they had the cookies and other snacks. We did not see any of their products in any of the gift shops or snack shops we visited. Not even the bakery in DD. BIG BUMMER-was I just looking in the wrong places? We were offered the special brownie with ice cream at Chef Mickeys.

We've always gotten top notch service and extra attention due to his allergies. Brenda does a fantastic job of alerting all the chefs. Even when he and DD stayed at the Simba's Cubhouse while we did a parent's dinner at Jiko, the chef at AKL called me a week in advance to confirm foods he could have.

Desserts were somewhat limited to things like soft serve ice cream and popsicles. Not always easy for an 8-year old, but what can you do? The staff will not take chances. If they feel it could be even a remote risk they will not serve it, or at least, they allow the parent to make the call but with clear warning that we assumed the risk.

We had a special dinner at California Grill and the chef there helped us order a cake in-house that he was able to have. Very nice. Also, he was able to eat at least one of the Thanksgiving desserts at Artist Point.

I was going to suggest that you brought a tetra pack of soymilk with you in your luggage. Trader Joes sells individual soymilk boxes in both Chocolate and vanilla. My DD is lactose intolerant and we leave those at her pre-k for days that the other kids have milk with snacks and it works out well.

We found Divvies in Oct. 07 at the Main Street Bakery and at the ASMu food court. I think folks have reported finding them at similar places recently.

As for desserts with TS meals - this is always one of our biggest problems. DS is also a type 1 diabetic. I have found that I need to contact each TS place in advance (with the phone number they will give you when you made the reservation and note the allergy). I talk to the chef to make sure there is something there that he wants to eat because he is not a big fan of ice cream usually. With some pre-planning I've found them willing to have an item ready for him (like a brownie) from another restaurant - or something like an Itzkadoozie.

Can I ask- has anyone gone who needs to do a Rotation Diet?

We just got DS's IgG results back, and are waiting for the IgE's. So in addition to gfcf, we're looking at several other things now that will need to go into rotation. The IgG had some pretty shocking results.

I'm just not sure the best way to handle that part of it, to begin with it's totally new to us... I am thinking of this way: Look at the menus of the TS places we have ressies for and see if any of them lends itself to a particular thing better than another. For example, while I'm sure that Biergarten has wonderful chefs, it might not be the best place if it's "rice" (cereals) day, maybe a better option for "potato". Then make some preliminary decisions, and email Brenda with that information?

The reason it concerns me more is that in addition to me being in contact with them, they will probably have to be in contact with each other. I'm not going to get hysterical if some little thing trips up, but in general we'll need to keep almost every food he eats in rotation. (like I said pretty shocking results) Honestly, I want to send them the info, because I'm pretty sure they'll be better at it than I am and I can swipe ideas. :confused3

Plus we have counter service thrown in there. AAAAHHHHH!

...If I may ask what is an itsakadoozie pop? ...

I found this picture of an itzakadoozie pop over on the restaurant board.

That will be perfect. I was going to run to Trader Joe's sometime soon anyway to pick up some the snack items that my kids will want to bring.

Also, thanks to the person for posting the photo of the popsicle thing. I can't remember how to spell it. That looks great! Something fun and colorful for my DS, for once! :cool1:

Hi! WE just went in August '07 and 2 of my daughters have celiac disease (they cannot have gluten) I can't even explain how great all of the chefs were! It was incredible. At the buffets they went around and told me everything they could eat. At Crystal Palace, they offered to make something fresh because something looked contaminated. Even the counter services were great. They took a little longer but obviously well worth the wait! At every TS, a chef came out and not only found out what they COULD eat but what they really LIKED to eat! I dont know about the divvies but they did have some allergy-free cookies and brownies at the Main ST. Bakery at MK and also the gluten, peanut and dairy free rice krispy bars. They are in the shape of a star not Mickey head but still very exciting for my kids! I can just say it was so incredible not to have to worry during the vacation! If I can be of any help, please ask and I can give more gluten-free details about our trip!

They had the divvies as of December.

Brenda will send you a list that includes the location in each park that these are available. The brownie they have is wonderful and the divvies cookies are great (they also have another brand of cookie, divvies are way better) Carmel corn is excellent.

On the divvies carmel corn, if they tell you you can not get it as a snack tell them it is because of food allergies, they do not allow the regular carmel corn anymore but the allergy stuff is still included, sometimes the cashiers don't know that.

Go at the very least crowded times to eat (4:30pm) for the best chances at a specially made dessert. One option to mix things up a bit is a allergy free brownie/tofutti sunday. Also you can specify Rice Dream instead of toffuti, which has a milder taste. Many places can also sub in Sorbet or fruit desserts.

Avoid Wolf Gang Pucks if you have nut allergies. There was almost nothing safe and they did not seem as careful. Fruit was the only choice for dessert and they charged us $7.95 for it :scared1:

Coral Reef and Sci Fi have gone above and beyond for us more than once, also Cape May was fantastic, so is Boma. Crystal Palace was good, but the server was awful and it took 30 minutes to get his dessert out.

Where are the Divvies available?

I'm hoping we can try them during our trip. If they're good, I'm going to order some from the website.
