Digital Camera's and Airport Security?

Hello everyone. I just recieved a Nikon CoolPix Digital Camera for Christmas. This might be a silly question but its my first time traveling with something other then a disposable camera. Will my camera be damaged going through airport security? Do you think this will be a problem?

Nope just keep it in your carry on. I have flown many times and my digital camera is always at the buttom of my carry on and i have never had a problem.

Also, check tsa.org for the new laws regarding Lithium batteries- it will need to be installed in your camera, and if you have any extras they must be in your carryon and in a plastic bag from what I gather

That was going to be my next question. My camera has a Rechargeable lithium-ion EN-EL8 battery. So if I keep it in the camera it should be okay..phew good to know :) thanks for that!

Sorry to hijack but I have a question about the new battery restrictions. It talks about lithium batteries. I use the rechargeable Energizer 2500 mAh batteries. You know the basic green ones sold right next to the regular batteries. Are these restricted with this policy? My camera takes 4 batteries so I have 4 in the camera and 4 extras. If these batteries fall in the category that means I can't bring my extra set? I looked at the tsa website but it wasn't real clear and I don't know my battery terminology! :confused3

Just to be sure, if they contain any lithium, just put any extra batteries in a ziploc bag in your carry on- they can not be in checked luggage

I would say ANY battery needs to be in some sort of non conducting container so that they dont short out. I dont think it really matters what type of battery. As far as a smaller camera like yours, just leave it in the carry on. If you have a camcorder, or a larger digital camera, like an SLR then you probably should just take it out, and put it in it's own bin.

If they are the AA size, then they are LiMH and not Li-ion and not subject to the rule. The fire problem that led to this rule was caused by a laptop battery - much larger than the batteries used in most digital photo cameras. But taking no chances the DOT banned all Li-ions from checked luggage.
As with cell phones, a lot of the cameras only come with a charger that requires the battery to be in the camera and a lot of us don't carry spares.
