Due to freakishly warm weather in GA in early December, I decided to do a spur-of-the-moment and totally impulsive quick trip to HHI for January 1-3.

Well - it was COLD!! There's a reason points are so darn cheap (our studio was a whopping SIX points per night). It's COLD!!!!! Let me tell you, the wind blowing off that marsh is COLD. So, we had these ideas that we would fish and play mini-golf - but it was really not enjoyable to be out in the wind. Even though there was not a cloud in the sky- there is really no way you could swim. We did not see a single brave soul in the water - although my crazy children would have gone in if I'd have let them.

A report with pictures:

We left Atlanta at about 9am New Years Day and even with a stop for lunch, made it to HHI by 2:00 - there was NO traffic. Our room was ready when we arrived and we enjoyed about 30 minutes of sort-of-mild temperatures (my son insisted on wearing a short-sleeve shirt and you can tell by the look on his face that it was not going to last!)

The resort was still all decorated for Christmas (decorations came down January 2nd) and it was understated but very pretty - mostly greenery garlands and some white lights - plus a small tree in Big Murghies Den.

We went to a Meet the Naturalist presentation n sea turtles and did Geocaching and that was great fun (and no charge - I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of no-cost recreation activities). We went to dinner at Hudsons - and it was just as good as I remember it being. Some of the best seafood I've ever eaten anywhere - and I grew up in Florida. I can't recommend it highly enough. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 I had the supremely wonderful crab cakes and dh had blackened stuffed shrimp - and we shared the oysters Rockefeller appetizer. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

We got back to the resort in time for the campfire - by now he temperature was dropping fast. For some reason, they could not get the campfire to actually light :confused3 - so it was not a very warm campfire - but I like the silly songs anyway.

We got up early on 1/2 because we were planning to go on a DVC excursion to a wildlife reserve - but it was FREEZING and there was horrible wind. We opted out, as did the other families. Instead, we did the Behind the Ears DVC tour of the resort - which was COLD but interesting. We went over to the beach house and ate lunch at Signals. The beach and day were pretty - but sooooooo cold that we did not last long.

Back at the resort, we went to B'lou's magic show (the kids later rated this as a highlight of the trip). We planned to eat at Scott's Fish Market or somewhere else in Shelter Cove but it was totally shut down for the season (as was Kingfisher!) So there is NOTHING walking distance to the resort - which is a bummer. We had dinner at Nick's - which was good, but not as good as Hudson's.

This morning, we did a couple of activities before heading out. The kids made Disney pillows (a GREAT craft that I highly recommend) http://nor.zorpia.com/0/3957/25324850.b8e672.jpgand ............
(drumroll)............ we saw SHADOW!!!!!!!!
http://lrg.zorpia.com/0/3957/25324848.f185a9.jpg

We spent a shadow-less spring break at HHI last year, and I have to admit that I doubted her existence. But there she was.

All in all it was a sweet, albeit cold, trip. HHI does considerably shut down in the winter. I can't say that I would have been happy using a bunch of points or traveling for the trip - but for a whopping total of 12 points and about four hours in the car - it was totally worth it.

A few special kudos and suggestions:

Kudos -
1. We really appreciated B'lou Crabbe. We saw him last year, but with the spring break crowds, did not really have a chance to appreciate just how special and cool he is. He's a great CM and really makes HHI magical.

2. Mostly great CMs - especially the naturalist and recreation CM Betsy.

3. We got a call about 15 minutes after we checked in to make sure our room was good and we had no concerns. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Suggestions -
1. Tide Me Over did not open until 11am -making it impossible to get breakfast :sad2: I really love breakfast that I don't have to cook on vacation. With so much in the surrounding area shut down - it would have been great to be able to get hot breakfast at the resort.

2. The craft activities at HHI seem really expensive. The pillows were cool (and worth the $$) - but DD also made a simple frame that was not really worth 10$ (a better frame activity at Marriott HHI last summer was 4$). Over Spring Break I noticed the same thing - really expensive crafts. :confused3 We love the community hall activities, and the 3-10$ range seems fairly typical of most DVCs. HHI has been consistently 10$ and over for crafts. I've only got one kid that generally does crafts - so it's not a huge issue - but I can imagine that families with three kids would quickly feel the pinch at 10-15$ per kid per little craft.

One last picture:
Hooray for virtual scrabble buddies, my groovy vintage clamshell Mac laptop that DH Frankestined with a new hard drive to run current Mac OS, and the fireplace in Big Murghies Den.

Boo for having to go back to work in the morning! :surfweb:

We're finishing our New Year's trip to Vero Beach and were just talking about wanting to make a trip to Hilton Head at some point, so I was glad to see your report. Glad you had a good time, and thanks for the pictures.

Thanks for the report! I have always wondered about HHI in January! We are from Maine, though, so I think we might have handled those temps a bit better.

I was following your VB report and it made me wish I was at VB!!! I think we may try it next year.

I don't know, we were geocaching with a family from Ontario and they were cold too!! The wind off the marsh/ocean was something else. Without the wind, we'd have been fine. But then again- I am the first to admit that I am a big baby when it comes to cold - I don't consider it summer until it hits the mid-90's.

Thanks for the report - you can tell from the pictures that your kids are feeling the cold ;) Sounds like you still managed to have a good time though :)

Hey starbox. Funny how a little wind can turn cold into COLD! 12 points, 4 hours for a little break in the season... worth it for sure.

OT.... sounds like you all got some good rain recently. Is your area recovering from the drought?

Thanks for the report. I LOVE HHI and I've spent a couple times there when it's been very cold. Did they have the hot cider and cookies in Big Murgie's Den in the cold? I miss that cider!

Yeah - in terms of points and time driving - the trip was a deal! I'd have liked Shelter Cove to have been open though - because that's a neat little area.

We did get rain, but the drought is really at catastrophic proportions. We went to Lake Lanier over the break and I was really shocked to see how dramatic the difference was. Sadly, we need a whole month of rain.

They did have cider and cookies briefly on one of the days. The cider was a huge hit. :thumbsup2 The free wifi in Big Murgie's Den was GREAT with the cold weather.

We were there from 12/23 to 12/28 and had a mixed bag of weather. On 12/26 my brother and his family went in the hot tub. It was about 50 degrees. It started to rain and the temperature dropped very fast in just a hour. We were in a Grand Villa and had the fireplace going the whole time we were there.

Nice report!

HHI is a gamble in January....you may not have realized it, but it was cold in Florida in early January as well! While we enjoyed balmy 70s in late December and January 1st, January 2nd things changed. We FROZE at Epcot. Then we headed to Miami for the Orange Bowl and I wore a sweatshirt and jacket and was STILL just a bit chilly! No place is guaranteed nice in January, except maybe a Disney Cruise!:goodvibes

We have spent New Years at Hilton Head and enjoyed temperatures in the 70s. It just depends!

We've been going to HHI for a 4-5 night trip over New Years for the last 5 years. We have been lucky, and never had any particularly cold weather.....except for Wed, Jan 2 this year. We were leaving just as you were arriving, and despite some rain early in our trip, we had fairly nice and warm weather until that day. Sorry your timing didn't work, January can be tricky, but a winter trip to HHI can be inexpensive, relaxing, and refreshing, especially for us northerners.

A piece of advice for HHI winter trips, look into the DVC cash discount price. Because of the season, you can get some pretty inexpensive rooms rates. We paid $135 a night for a 2-br for Fri, Sat, Sun, saving our points from those high weekend point costs. Then used weekday points on Monday and Tuesday (14 pts a night) when the season changed.

Saw Shadow as well. We hunt her down every trip, otherwise we never hear our DD shut up about it. B'Lou told us the real story of Shadow too. And my DD was disappoiinted that she missed the pillow making craft, she saw a CM cutting up the material the day before we left. She had a great time at the New Years Party though. We had a pool view unit, and I was surprised at how loud and crowded the News Year's celebration outside was (while in bed myself, of course.....)

We were at HH Dec 30 to Jan 1, then on to VB for 2 nights. All of the southeast was cold from the 2nd to the 4th, VB had snow flurries one morning while we were there. We loved both resorts and will return sometime in the future.

Can you tell us the activities they had for NYE and NY day? Are there fireworks in Shelter Cove? Were the restaurants like Scotts, San Miguels open?
Thanks!:)

No fireworks, but they had a "ball dropping ceremony" at the pool with music and other stuff. Like I said, I was in bed, but it was loud for a good hour or so. They have parties for three different age groups on NYE too from 7-midnight (food, activities, etc.) Nothing for the adults, but with the kids busy, the adults go out for their own NYE dinner (or to bed.....)

As for restauraunts, I'm pretty sure they are all open for NYE. All the ones I've gone to have been. We went to a Tapas place this time, and I highly recommend it.

You should come this week. It's 70+ and very nice. Of course it's suppose to rain this weekend.

That cold spell on the 3rd was as cold as it has gotten in the area in the last 5 or so years (or at least as far as I can remember). I hope it killed off the moquitos and gnats.

Thanks for the response! We just live an hour away but thought it might be fun to do something different for NYE next year! Sounds fun! Our weather here in SC has been crazy lately - we are back up to 78 degrees today! :)

Glad you had a nice trip sorry about weather. We were at WDW and those days were chilly there too. Last year we were at HHI and it was in the mid 70's for New Year's week. It was nice. Thanks for the great Pics.:goodvibes

My question is how's the weather the end of March ususally? Thinking about coming for Easter week, is anything open?

Thanks

End of March is usually lovely; plants are in bloom, and activities are gearing up for the Heritage tournament at Sea Pines the week after the Masters. It's not "high season," ie, June through mid-August. But lots of people go down for spring break and Easter, and there will be plenty to do. Plus the restaurants won't be nearly as crowded.

March is usually nice, sometimes a little rainy. Warm days, cool nights. The ocean will be swimable (if that is a word). My wife likes to hit the beach on St. Patrick's day. If you are coming to Savannah for SPD, the parade will be on March 14th this year because the week of the 17th is Holy Week.

April is a little warmer and that's when the Sand Gnats will come out in force. Make sure you have Avon's Skin so Soft with you when you come. Make a solution of 50% SoS and water and wipe it on. They'll stay away.

Do you know if the Shelter Cove area is also closed in February? We have a trip scheduled for next month and are talking about changing it and heading to somewhere here in Florida instead.

Hi everybody!

I live in Bluffton, (next door to HHI) SO I can answer some of your questions. Conan is right about March- it's normally very nice- However, you never really know what you're going to get between Dec and April here. I had an outdoor wedding at the end of March ('06) and it was in the low 50's at midday- which is pretty darn cold if you liive south of Charlotte. Ok if you have jackets on though. But last year on our aniversary the weather was nice.. (well, now that I think of it we may have been in WDW on our anniversary...)
But mostly you have to watch out for the rain. April, May and October have the best weather here- hands down. (Though technically October is still hurricane season).
OP is right about that week in January- it was literally freezing temps overnight- but the next week we were back in the 70's and everyone was out riding bikes and playing golf and kayaking etc. (Except me- I was at work!)
It's so much fun to read your trip report and comments! Thanks

Most of the shops and restaurants in Shelter Cove are independently owned. I know the Kingfisher is closed for the season, (my sister was working there for a while). A lot of the places will open if the weather is nice, or if there is a holiday weekend- but I would expect thngs to be relatively quiet until March 1st. There are still a bunch of really great restaurants in the area though if you will have a car with you.

PottersMom,
DH, DF and I will be on HHI 2/16 and we will have a car - so we would like to go to a restaurant where the locals go for good, down home, comfort food. DH and I have done the tourist spots, we can do the chains anywhere, we've done Savannah and after driving up from WDW I know I won' be able to get him to drive back to Townsend, GA to go to Pelican Point. Can you suggest someplace we might enjoy?
