View Full Version : Honey, I Shrunk the Checkbook, Really final, some Feb shots, 7-27, pg82.
Hugh Hefner, Ray Kroc. (McDonald's)
Two American institutions.
Know what they have in common?
They are both from Chicago, which is where I am from.
I and Smidgy, my wife, aka Diane.
Sorry, Smidgy and I.
Some day I hope to be institutionalized as well.
hmm.....
Oh, by the way, there was another fellow that also came from here.
Walter Elias Disney
Oct. 1st, Port Orleans, Riverside:
"Honey, I'm not sure you're gonna like this", I said while gazing at the Muddy Rivers sign over the pool bar.
"Just don't say, you've b"
"I've been thinking"
"AIEEEEEE!" she screamed. "NO, NO, NO, we can't come back in December, we just can't".
"Besides, we've been here three times already this year". "You're nuts!"
Unfortunately, this WAS going as planned. Time to get my A game on the court, choke up on the bat, find the open receiver if you will.
"But we HAVE to! It's already booked!. And we never came once between 94 and 02. And we never came once in 04, besides, we already made the downpayment of 200." "Plus, gas prices will be lower, and we have the room at ASMusic for 48 a night!" "You can barely get a Motel 6 for that price, much less a Disney resort."
I was firing.
I was also out of breath.
And she was faltering.
"But it doesn't matter", she had regrouped on me, "We can get the downpayment back since we haven't paid the balance yet."
"Besides, we only booked it in case we didn't go on the trip when your company closed."
She was right, we knew where I worked that my company would go out of business by december, but when it closed on september 1st, I was a tad unhappy, got a room at Pop for AAA rate, and then got 3 nights at the Dolphin for 125 a night.
And we went.
This "argument" is taking place on the last day of our free dining trip at Riverside. Our bags are packed, and sitting with Magical Depress, and we are having a cocktail waiting for the bus to arrive.
It happens like this:
When the new codes for free dining or room onlys come out, we are all over them like paparazzi on Britney. In April, Diane was up at six in the morning booking the free dining, and in August I nailed the 48 a night at ASMusic for the second week in December.
Just in case.
You know what? It's a lot easier to book a Disney vacation than it is to cancel one.
Trust me, I know.
Oh boy, do I know.
In August, the little bar where Smidgy worked for over ten years, changed owners, who brought in their own people. She was out. Then the bank called in the loan on the place where I worked for 27 years, and I was out.
Now, my reasoning is since we're both out of jobs, and if we start new ones right away there won't be any vacation time, why not go when we have the chance?
This was of course, painstakingly explained to her again, my eyes still not leaving the Muddy Rivers sign.
"At 48 a night, that comes to about 1500 a month, that's a lot of people's mortgage! That's how cheap it is. And with the refillable mugs, all the cofee, tea and pop we can drink"
She was slipping again.
"But I still have some housecleaning customers I don't want to lose, and,,,"
"Plus our "home" would come with 2 pools." She reeled back against the ropes, and tried to get back in the fight.
"But,,"
"And a maid!" I almost have her now.
As she tried to get off the mat, with the ref counting her out, I gave her the knockout blows:
"Osbourne Lights, Candlelight Processional, DISNEY WORLD DURING THE HOLIDAYS WITH ALL THEIR GLORIOUS DECORATIONS!"
She threw in the towel.
Game, Set, Match!
GOT HER!
Hi, my name is Steve, aka Nebo, a dumb nickname I've had since a teenager, and I will be your host on this trip for the holidays.
We are early fifties empty nesters, and true Disney holics.
This report will focus on what it's like to be at Disney for the holiday season, with photos mostly geared towards the decorations.
This was a very special trip also for us. Of all the times we've been to Disney, we have never been here for the holidays.
Plus, we realize it may be a very long time till we are able to return.
A thing about our itinerary though.
And me.
I am famous for tinkering with a trip, I just can't help it.
The phrase "I've been thinking", brings much anguish and trepidation to Diane.
While it is true that we booked 8 nights at ASMusic for 48 a night, it didn't stay that way. The original plan was to go as cheap as possible, and believe me, I know cheap.
You know, drive down, bring the big cooler, sandwiches in the room, corners cut at all costs.
Literally.
But, again, I had to tinker.
I added a night, room only, so we wouldn't have to hit Chicago on a friday on the return trip.
Then one day I got curious, called central reservations and inquired about AAA rates for French Quarter but only got ten bucks off the 150 rack rate.
So I hung up and tried again.
This cast member, bless his heart, could get me a FQ room for 115 a night!
It took a bit of work, but he was able to cancel 3 nights off the ASMu package, and turn them into room onlys at FQ.
Then I cancelled the "added" room only night at Music, and put one more at FQ. A week later I did it again with the package.
So, the package is shrinking, and the French Quarter is growing.
(hmm, that probably didn't come out right)
This is why Diane prefers to fly, the dates get locked in, and I have very little to be able to tinker with.
But wait, there's more!
You can only buy the Dining Plan with a package, and for the entire length of stay of the package.
8 nights was out of the question, but since the package part of the trip is down to 5?
She hadn't thought of this, and I had to open my big mouth.
Within two hours, she was on the phone making dinner ressies.
So here's what we ended up with:
Leave very early tuesday the 4th, drive as far as we can and get a room.
Wednsday on to Kissimee, another room and check in thursday morning bright and early at ASMusic.
5 nights Music, with the dining plan.
4 nights French Quarter, on the starving plan.
More on our plans later.
A word about myself and this report. I almost blended this into my last report, then thought maybe it should start fresh, a lot of folks don't like to join a report that started 6 months ago.
So those of you who are wondering what it's like there in the holiday season, or those who wonder what it's like when you are older, and not having to drag the stroller on the bus, I think you will find this a fun and informative read.
Ok, fun, anyway.
Once again, you are all welcome to come along, and as we say here in the Chicago area, post early and post often.
The Santa Fe is pulling out at 2:30 in the morning, don't make me have to honk the horn for you! .......steve
(hmm, that 5 nights and 4 nights isn't symetrical, maybe when we get to FQ I'll ask and see if we can add a night, you know, just in case they actually still have a room open. nah, that'l never happen, better not even bring it up.)

I haven't been on in awhile and got here tonight just at the right time to finish up the last report and get in on the ground floor of the next.
I couldn't bear to get on for awhile, going through the disney depression and all. Then had to get all the Christmas stuff done... We were at POR 11/23-12/2. I LOVED Riverside and have to say that I don't know that I even want to try another resort. Kinda if it isn't broke don't fix it thing. But I guess it would be hard to turn down $48 a night.
So I'm back to check in and see what I missed seeing of the holiday decorations. Post pictures please!!!
Since you've frequented POR have you seen this guy? DH & I saw him on 2 different nights (dusk) while walking and taking a break from the kids. He was on the walkway in AB just before the bridge to Ol' Man Island. Came up the bank from the river, crossed the walkway and had a little trail going into the lush vegatation.

Sometmes you don't realize how "local" a subject or person may be.
I thought Ray Kroc was as well known as a Bill Gates, but I guess that's just because we're from the same area. Ok, I just editted the first page. Good ol Ray was the founder of McDonalds. I noticed though that nobody had a problem knowing Hugh Hefner, though. Geesh!
I'm curious now. If I was to mention Ray Raynor, Bozo's Circus or Garfiels Goose, would anybody know them? Or is that just a local thing too?
Well it's nice to see you folks willing to see if there's any gas left in the tank. I'm planning on posting chapters more often and not dragging this one out as long. For one thing there won't be any more "vacation interruptions" this time. :sad2:
And, WOW! The Sequel.
It took less than 2 hours for OhMari to see the new one, and make the last trip report walk the green mile and send it to the archives. I never even got a chance for "poster recognition night" or last call outs. If anybody didn't finish it and still wants to, I think you can just click on the link in my siggy to be sent there, but I don't think you will be able to post anything.
So, shall we start with our first batch of call outs?
Wow Nebo! I can't believe I'm the first one here!!! I'm hooked already! I can't wait to read more! There is nothing better than Disney at Christmas time, and I'm sure it will be even better Nebostyle!:thumbsup2

Thank you, thank you, than..... uh oh, Great Lakes area, huh? Hmm, probably too close to us to count. Nice to have you aboard GL, don't think I've seen you before. Believe it or not, we don't have a Portillo's anywhere near us, have to drive at least twenty miles to get to one. but we're excited cuz they are opening a Lou Malnotti's pizza in the next town over, the best stuffed pizza in the world.

Janet, you would think that these trips would all blend together after a while, but this time seemed, and felt, completely different from all the rest. And it wasn't just from the decorations. I'll try to explain better later.

Hello, Lexmelinda, nice to meet you!
Ok, ok, I'm just teasin. You know I was thinking of you the other day. I can't imagine how hard it must be to have a great love for Disney, and not have it shared with your mate. And not knowing when you'll be able to go back there. If it's any consolation, as for the latter part, we're in the same boat now, too. Please, say hi to Mimi for us.
I'm here, wouldn't miss it for the World.

Hi Angela, glad to hear you love Riverside so much. We've stayed twice now in Alligator Bayou, and once in the mansion section and to be honest, we prefer the mansion section better. It just looks "richer" and I like the quiet pools better there.
No, we never did see that critter when we were there, what is it anyway? Looks like a small otter.
And I am just SO HAPPY you got to see Devine. Notice what I did to the picture when I highlighted your post? :rotfl:

Yep, it's an otter. And trust me it wasn't small. From it's front feet to the end of it's tail was probably 2 feet. Stretched out from nose to tail at least
2 1/2feet.
We walked over to the mansion side and I like the bayou section better for the exact reason you stated. The mansions are richer and don't seem to fit us well. I'm afraid our boys would damage the lawns! And no pool is quiet after 9yo and 6yo boys arrive!
And no, I can't figure out what you did to DeVine when you highlighted the post other than left her out.
Can't wait to hear more. Now I have a better understanding of where things are and what you're talking about since going.

Isn't Disney BEAUTIFUL during the Holidays?????? I've been there a few times but as long as I have my part time job with Walgreens I can't go because the manager doesn't let anyone take any vacation time in Nov. or Dec. Kathy we just missed you too. I'm curious to know what the crowd level was like when you were there.
Crowds, what crowds? I was so enthralled by the lights and decorations that I did not even notice any crowds. Well, except for all of those people who were in my way when I was trying to shop after MVMCP, and those people who kept jumping in front of my friend's wheelchair, and the waves of people in DTD....
Seriously, it was just like they say - not too bad on the 18th, but progressively worse as the Christmas holidays came closer. We went to Epcot on our first day, and Soarin' was about a 40-50 minute wait. Not too horrible. Nemo and Turtle Talk were walk-on, as were most of the other rides/attractions, except for Test Drive and MS.
We went to MVMCP on the 20th and most rides were only 5-10 minutes' wait. and it really did not seem too crowded, either.
On Saturday the 22nd, we went to DTD and it was pretty hard to walk or shop there, but we made it through somehow;) .
BTW, I know who Ray Croc is, but I grew up in Michigan and worked at McD's for 4 years while I was in high school.

He couldn't believe I didn't know who the founder of McDonalds was either. It was actually pretty disturbing how he could spout off all the information on both Ray Kroc and the founding of McDonalds. My eyes glazed over and he finally released me from the horrid lecture when he realized that I wasn't listening to his spiel on annual profits, costs, etc. Yeah, he needs to lay off the accounting. What a nutter!
I was afraid to ask about the others - namely Ray Raynor and Garfiels Goose. I'll google them later! I do, however, remember Bozo's Circus very fondly. It used to be on WGN when we got cable and I absolutely loved the show. In fact, I practiced for that ball tossing thing so I could win prizes just in case we ever went to the show. We never did. My childhood dreams of winning the big prizes were crushed. :sad1: Woe is me.
Speaking of drama! Wow, you're a thespian and I didn't know it!
And, WOW!
That is definitely an Oscar winning dramatic acting job there! Wooowhee, it's no wonder you got to go to Disney three times in one year. :rotfl: Look at that masterful guilt trip you laid on poor OhMari. That is definitely a work of art.
By the way, my stomach thing seems to have passed. I managed to take a nice nap and that always seems to help. Of course, when I got back up (around 11:30 PM) I was absolutely starving. I managed to talk myself into eating some crackers but it tasted nothing like what I was craving. I tried some soup and that just wasn't quite right either. I finally broke down and just fed the craving. That was the best buttered popcorn ever!

Oh why can't I be married to someone like you, (well except with a job:rolleyes1 ). Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm sure you'll be back in the grind soon.
I have to plan everything and am the one trying to convince my spouse that we NEED another trip.

Brrrr I know it's chilly down there now. It was 16 here last night, but it's supposed to be in the 80's according to the 10 day forecast. We are staying at Saratoga Springs for the first time.
Now, going back to the Ray Kroc thing. I knew he was the founder of Mc D's. I remember Bozo's circus too, and I can tie them together. In the Washington, DC area, Willard Scott (yeah, the NBC weatherman) played both Bozo and Ronald McDonald. My TV debut was on the Ronald McDonald Show.
Time to stoke up the fire. Waiting patiently for updates.:surfweb:

"Magical Depress"....how sad but true! :rotfl2:
NINE nights! How stupendous. Someday I will go for so long...how nice to actually be able to relax in WDW instead of rushing around in order to see everything before Magical Depress comes for me!
Wow! I'm flubberghasted. This must be how Utahmama feels when she turns on her computer and sees that California posted on her thread.
And I can see I haven't lost it. Right out of the gate I managed to get a bunch of people mad at me.
It's like this, when I saw the old trip was gone, I didn't think anyone would find the new one, so I sent out a bunch of Pms (?) to regulars that hadn't posted yet. So a lot of you didn't get one. Then Ohmymy, OhMari read what I said and put the old one back. One thing I have learned, always be nice to your moderator, and tip well. (kiss, kiss). I think we should all show our appreciation to her and send her an electronic thank you card. All of us. (I'm kidding, you know that right?) Right?
I hope you understand I just can't hit everybody that posted right now, don't feel left out if I left you out. hmmm Tomorrow, the trip gets rolling, but first,,,,,,,,
I am here. PROCEED. :snooty:
She does that snooty thing so well. Even looks like her. Jaime I love reading your signature, it's like stopping into the Library of Congress.
Yep, it's an otter. And trust me it wasn't small. From it's front feet to the end of it's tail was probably 2 feet. Stretched out from nose to tail at least
2 1/2feet.
Angela, your killing me. I'm trying very hard not to quote the line from Naked Gun that Leslie Neilson delivers when Prissy Presley hands him down a stuffed animal.
And no, I can't figure out what you did to DeVine when you highlighted the post other than left her out. It's simple. It's called weed killer.
Can't wait to hear more. Now I have a better understanding of where things are and what you're talking about since going.
Angela
[QUOTE].
I think Diane and I should compare notes. Jaime also tinkers with a trip, fills out an itinary and that itinary gets changed a couple dozen times before we go.
Isn't Disney BEAUTIFUL during the Holidays?????? I've been there a few times but as long as I have my part time job with Walgreens I can't go because the manager doesn't let anyone take any vacation time in Nov. or Dec. Now that I think about it that's only 1 more Christmas - this year's - because for Christmas 2009 we will be living down there and hopefully working for the Mouse himself.:thumbsup2
:
Rhondalee, you're probably not going to believe this, but Walgreens was EXTREMELY important to me, too, when I was just there. As far as the sights go, you're right, just unbelievable in December.
Crowds, what crowds? I was so enthralled by the lights and decorations that I did not even notice any crowds. Well, except for all of those people who were in my way when I was trying to shop after MVMCP, and those people who kept jumping in front of my friend's wheelchair, and the waves of people in DTD....
BTW, I know who Ray Croc is, but I grew up in Michigan and worked at McD's for 4 years while I was in high school.
I think it was a passage of puberty. You couldn't get your first zits until you worked at McD's.
I'll bring it back for a few weeks, sorry.
thanks, don't listen to Maraena, listen to Diane, she knows all about me piling on guilt trips.
Sheesh...I go off the boards for a few months and Nebo goes to WDW 3 times in one year and loses his job!! Sorry about the latter, but not as much as I would be if you had cancelled those trips!

I went in dec 06 and it was absolutely beautiful. I love Christmas, and tonight was going to take down the christmas tree and put all the decorations away, but here I am instead. All your fault.
Didn't know Ray Croc. I got my first zits working at Wendy's. Dave Thomas came to the restaurant once, but don't remember where he's from. Bet you know.
Perhaps you should post a poll early in the report for us to vote on how many injuries were sustained in 9 days. Hope it was none. Can't wait for more!!!

:flower3:
You too, welcome to the sandbox Rozz.
You know, when I was little, we never had a sandbox. Uh uh.
We had a quicksand box.
I was an only child.
Eventually.
Hey, when you have a chance to quote Steven Wright, you have to go for it.
They say, " The journey of a thousand miles begins with a few small steps."
Well, in this case, it was a few small stops.
Things started to go wrong, even days leading up to the trip.
I guess I'm going to have to be redundant and repeat some history here for new readers, but some background is important.
The day before we are to leave, I got the bad news.
Really bad news.
Curl into a ball in the corner bad news.
While sucking my thumb.
"Ok, ok, what was so bad?" "What happened?"
It's simple, really.
No drugs, I can't get any drugs.
It's like this;
Five operations on my foot from an accident at work have given me a continuing ressie at Walgreen's for vikes. As in Vicodin. And I'm sure you can just imagine what all the walking around down there does to an icky foot.
But that's not the real problem. The real problem is the drive down.
I'm good for about 3 hours before my back starts going all spazzy on me, and I end up trying to crunch up jackets, jeans, or small children and stuffing them behind my back on the seat.
Of course I can never tell my doc I need them for the drive, ,,, however,,,, I need them for the drive.
Do I have a problem with painkillers? Like Brett Favre, Rush Limbaugh or Mathew Perry?
Nope! None, whatsoever.
Unless I can't get any that is.
Diane once asked my how I feel when after all these years of taking them, I suddenly have to stop. What goes through your body, how do you feel?
"Sad."
Which brings us now to well, now.
Timing is everything, and I really blew it this time.
I am all out of them, and they won't let me refill it too early. So far we have driven down there 9 times, and not once have I had to do it without the real thing.
You talk about SAD! The very earliest I can maybe refill them is when we're in Kissimee, on thursday. The problem is, this is only tuesday.
SAD, SAD, SAD.
And scared. I honestly don't know if I can make it without a stop every 15 minutes to stretch.
And that's the first thing I thought of when the alarm went off at 1:30 tuesday morning. Not a nice thought to begin a trip with.
We did get lucky in one respect. Originally we were to leave on wednsday, stay in Georgia and check in to Disney around noon thursday. But due to the lack of daylight in December, we thought it would be better to take our time getting there and leave tuesday. We also considered just flying down on thursday, but we ended up nixxing that idea.
Good thing on both accounts. We had a mini blizzard wednsday and thursday, to the point where O'hare was shut down for a few hours even.
Leaving tuesday we just missed it!
Again, we also had the daylight issue. I"m not really crazy anymore driving at night in places I'm not all that familiar with, especially when it comes to checking into a motel in a strange town. I prefer to at least be able to check out my surroundings a bit.
So we decided to upload the dark into the front part of the trip, where I'm more familiar with. That's why we shooted to leave at 2:30 in the mornig.
Shooted?
As we're getting ready that morning, and I'm trying to stuff the crate of aspirin and the barrel of ibuprofen into the car, I tried to smile at Smidgy, but she wasn't buying it.
"I never would have married you if I'd known you were nocturnal!"
"Hoot." I said.
Almost ready, a last check around the house, all looks good. "Ok," I said, "Final potty party."
And then it started.
You know where I'm going, right?
Sure you wanna hear this?
Twenty minutes later I finally emerged. "You ok? she asked.
"Don't know, think so, hope so, better be so or I'm a so and so."
Holding hands for a small prayer in the driveway, and I finally got you yell it.
"ANNNND, They're OFFFFF!!"
Two blocks down the road and I did it again.
"AAAND, they're turning around!"
"What's the matter?" she asked.
"Forgot my sunglasses on the tv."
This time Mischief, our cat almost made the break for freedom, but I caught her just in time.
"AAAND, they're offff!"
"Yeah, yeah."
Hmm, guess it's losing it's effect.
Normally, this part of a trip I'm in a great mood, but right now I'm worried and you know why.
About a block from the tollway, on a really pitch black road, Diane decides to try expedite that which has me all concerned right now.
She screams.
And grabs the dashboard.
I have always found this most helpful when I am driving, haven't you?
Hmm, let us rationalize about this. My passenger, my wife, has just taken it upon herself to scream in my ear, on a lonely dark road at 2:40 in the morning. Now, what could it be that would necessitate such a response, considering she is completely aware of the FRAGILE state my internal organs are in. Could it be:
A: She forgot HER sunglasses?
B: The sky is falling?
C: Sale at Walmart? or,,,
D: Then I saw it, and sure enough, it did! This deer was by the side of the road, (which she saw and ergo, the scream), and then bolted right in front of me, which I saw.
I just swerved, wasn't even close, but it did get your attention though.
"Please, next time if you must scream, at least scream "DEER!" Ok, DEAR!?"
I politely explained this to her as we waited for the stoplight that leads us down to the tollway.
She was feeling a bit foolish, and when the light changed, she tried a little levity:
"AANND!, they're OFFFF!"
"Stick it."
:snooty:
30 miles down the road, we're on the tristate, and I'm not doing any better.
Panic is setting in now, genuine panic. Even if I was to hold out till Indiana, what then? It's not like they have little porta-potties lining the highway.
Then the big one hit me.
The clench your teeth, grasp the steering wheel, double over in pain with a hot poker in your belly one, and I knew this game was just about over.
And I saw the sign, the wonderful, wonderful sign.
Hinsdale Oasis, one mile.
Around the Chicago area, we don't have rest areas, but a couple of the highways have these McDonalds oasisis, oasises, oasii, yeah, oasii, that's work, that go over the tollway.
"Get your Big Mac and Gas TOO!"
Well, I won't mention the first, but I'd like to get rid of the other, thank you very much, and I shot up the ramp!
The car was still rolling to a stop, when I was through the door already.
Ten minutes later and it's time to repeat the conversation. "You ok?"
"I don't know, I think so. "
"Do you need more time?"
"Probably, why don't you come back friday?"
That's just it with these types of "problems". You never know when it's "All Clear". For right now though, whew! She gave me a couple of immodiums, which I usually hate to take, but this time I'm not arguing.
Yeah, I may not go again until Christmas, but anything is better than what I just went through.
Back in the car, I started the engine. Again.
And I looked at her.
"Don't"
"Even"
"Thinkit."
:lmao:
See? Isn't sharing overrated?
And on they went.
Ten minutes after hitting rt. 65 in Indiana, she was dozing.
And I'm looking for DEER!
And porta-potties. Just in case.
Finally, rest area coming up.
Two miles.
Next rest area,,,,,,,,,,,
I couldn't read it. By the time I get that far in a sign, the headlights are now off of it, and the rest dissapears. I don't need this rest area just yet, if it ain't broke, don't fix it kinda thing.
But it would be nice to know when the next one is. Crap, could be a matter of life and death.
So to say.
I made it to Indianoplace, and she woke up. Now she's a flurry of maps flipping every which way. It was just beginning to get light out, and we just barreled right through downtown and on to Louisville.
Just south of Louis, I pulled over in Shepherdsville for gas, it wasn't even nine yet.
She made me a coffee inside while I pumped and checked this one tire.
All done, she was gazing out the window at a pickup truck next to us as I was figuring out the mileage.
"Boy," she said, "You can tell we're in Kentucky." "The guy next to us is slugging down a beer already."
We have friends that moved down here about six months ago, but she wasn't thinking of them right now. So I said, " Did Mike at least wave to you?"
I guess the timing was just right, cuz she laughed her butt off.
And on we went.
One thing nice about this drive this time, is that even though there is so little light, it was 21 degrees when we left this morning, and the further we drive, the warmer it gets.
By Nashville, I'm up to 5 ibuprofens and 4 aspirin. But it's holding out better than expected.
After Nashville, comes the part Smidgy just hates.
It's an extremely steep decline of 6 percent , with runaway truck ramps on the sides, and a cloud of fear over Diane's head.
You don't touch the gas pedal for about 7 miles, and that's no bull.
Remember when she screamed earlier in the car?
Well, I thought of paying her back right now, oh BOY would it have worked! But I kept my mouth shut.
Who wants to be in Disneyworld by themselves?
Hit a rest stop in Chattynoogies, then the Georgia welcome center to get some motel brochures.
Gas in Dalton, then right through the center of Disneydad99 land, Atlanta. On through Stockbridge, and Marietta, and Forsythe and Macon. Byron and Ashburn and Perry and Blitzen.
Sorry
We did land that night in Perry, a really good haul for the first day, tomorrow will be a snap now. Stayed in an America's Best Hotel.
43 a night, including tax.
And says, "Free HOT continental breakfast"
Hmm, can't wait to see what THAT is.

First of all; Great Title!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: That lead me straight here! :yay:
It's like this;
Five operations on my foot from an accident at work have given me a continuing ressie at Walgreen's for vikes. As in Vicodin. And I'm sure you can just imagine what all the walking around down there does to an icky foot.
Ouch! Not gud.
But that's not the real problem. The real problem is the drive down.
I'm good for about 3 hours before my back starts going all spazzy on me, and I end up trying to crunch up jackets, jeans, or small children and stuffing them behind my back on the seat.
Me too. Back and neck problems. But I still ride, man. I still ride. :smokin:
Do I have a problem with painkillers? Like Brett Favre, Rush Limbaugh or Mathew Perry?
Nope! None, whatsoever.
Unless I can't get any that is.
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
You talk about SAD! The very earliest I can maybe refill them is when we're in Kissimee, on thursday. The problem is, this is only tuesday.
SAD, SAD, SAD.
And scared. I honestly don't know if I can make it without a stop every 15 minutes to stretch.
Two words: Whis Key. ::yes::
Too much extra money? :confused3
Good thing on both accounts. We had a mini blizzard wednsday and thursday, to the point where O'hare was shut down for a few hours even.
Leaving tuesday we just missed it!
That answers it. O'Hare = Sux.
"ANNNND, They're OFFFFF!!"
Two blocks down the road and I did it again.
"AAAND, they're turning around!"
"What's the matter?" she asked.
"Forgot my sunglasses on the tv."
I do that all the time... only usually I'm leaving stuff behind in a hotel room. :sad2:
"AAAND, they're offff!"
"Yeah, yeah."
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
I have always found this most helpful when I am driving, haven't you?
Pfft... women! :rolleyes1
D: Then I saw it, and sure enough, it did! This deer was by the side of the road, (which she saw and ergo, the scream), and then bolted right in front of me, which I saw.
I just swerved, wasn't even close, but it did get your attention though.
::yes::

"Get your Big Mac and Gas TOO!"
I spend a lot of time at Lk Geneva and I fly to O'Hare and drive up. I see these things everywhere and am compelled to stop. 36 pounds later, I'm off Big Macs for life.
I made it to Indianoplace, and she woke up. Now she's a flurry of maps flipping every which way. It was just beginning to get light out, and we just barreled right through downtown and on to Louisville.

It's a good thing you started at 2:30 in the morning or you might never have gotten there! So sorry about the pain dilemma--a BC Powder is the only other thing I can think of that might have been a little better than ibuprofen! Can't wait to hear about the hot breakfast the next morning--I'm sure that was not something your stomach was looking forward to! Was it microwaved pecan twirls? Powdered sausage gravy and frozen biscuits? Soupy gray oatmeal? Mmm, mmmm, travel food!:rotfl2:

I believe that sort of thing is genetic as well....from Grand Rapids to Chi-town, our pit stop was historically Kzoo & then Gary....it was my lot in life. My daughter has now inherited this distinction, having learned the skill of chewing on the Imodium to make them go to work faster.
As for the dreaded truck roll-off declines...we do it with a fifth wheel trailer behind us. That's when I apply the "brake" I pretend is on my side of the vehicle and my husband stops speaking to me for an hour.
On bated breath waiting for the next installment....

Woohoo! I'm strange! (I know, I've already confessed to a tendancy towards this.) I practiced the ball game with some of the larger styrofoam cups which I took the time to duct tape to my parents' linoleum living room floor. I guess we were out of masking tape but my Dad wasn't too pleased when he found my little practice area. (I was an early riser as a kid. I was up at 4-5 AM and my dad typically rolled out of bed about 5:30. Plenty of time to get in trouble.) What, exactly, did he think I was collecting the cup containers for anyhow?
OK!OK! he's waiting for me to get OFF the 'puter :surfweb: so he can get to work.

Oh, I can definitely believe this one. Just watching his masterful prose in regards to the prior trip report was enough. Poor, poor Smidgy.
(Psst, Nebo...food and wine festival, October, see you there?)
DFi and I can both sympathize with gastronomical issues. We've both been diagnosed with IBS and I come from a long line of it! Thankfully, on trips it tends to swing to the polar opposite of what you were experiencing. For the first three or so days, that's all fine and dandy. By day 4, I don't want to eat any longer. I think DFi's is related more to a gluten intolerance since his nephew has been diagnosed with Celiac's. Try talking him out of drinking gluten-laden beer though!
Great update, by the way! Very amusing. I think I'll use 'and we're off' on our next trip. I wonder if the stewardesses would appreciate me yelling it though? :confused3

Did your route take you thru Ft Wayne? I spend a lot time there also.
I'm not sure. My route on 65 takes me through, well, 65. And at 3 in the morning, all the towns pretty much look the same. How come so many towns are named after water towers, anyway?

Heated seats? There is only one way this seat is able to be heated, and that's my biggest concern at this point.

Mo, that was a great post, I was laughing my butt off here at all your comments, unfortunately you can't get the whole exchange when you multi quote. Sounds like we share a titanium moment together. I've had a plate, 8 screws, and a dozen staples embedded into my foot, along with a piece of my hip, though that wasn't titanium. Most of the junk is out of there now, except for just a couple of broken screws that would be too much trouble to remove.

hi CJ, I'm gonna be a know-it -all here right now. First of all, I think you're confusing ZzUB with Happyhaunt, he's from Alabama I believe, she's from Canada. But they talk about each other a lot in they're reports so it's easy to mix them up. MDF, thanks for joining in, that was a great post! Your join date shows you to be just about a founding member here on the Dis, and I can't believe I didn't find it until july of 06. I also remember reading some of your reports a while ago when I was still a lurker, and injoyed them a lot, don't you have a dumb nickname also? Buzz? Yeah, I remember reading you and thinking it must be ZZUB during his dyslexic phase! Well thanks for reading, hope you come around often!
Buzz, yup. ::yes:: I wouldn't call it dumb though.
:rotfl2: :rotfl2:
I actually joined in 1997 but they reset everyone in 1999 so I had to start over. I remember being really pissed about that also. I musta had an easy life if that bothered me.
I'll ride this sucker out to the end. Great start and thank you for sharing.

Yep, it was just before the bridge over to the island. So cute!!
Great start Nebo. With your eyes I can't believe you'd try driving at night. We no how well you do going into the rides/restaurants and all. Does the same thing happen when headlights hit? You just drive blind for 5 minutes or so?:confused3

Yeah, I've gotta get rid of that. And replace it with one equally as depressing..."20 months until Our Next Disney Adventure". That's IF my barely-Disney-tolerating DH agrees. :sad2:
..psst. don't tell nebo... get HIM to think it's HIS idea! "oh honey, we just can't! "shhhh....no one tell now....
My DH and I are 50ish couple (well, I'm almost there), but with the worst timing! We're not empty nesters yet. We've got one in the 4th grade and one in the 6th. :scared:

if I can see my world (disney)through their eyes!!!
Don't worry, Nebo.....It doesn't bother me really that I didn't get the super dooper special invite to your party! Being ignored only encourages me!:goodvibes

Well, I had no idea that you had such a huge following or a previous report. I feel honored that you responded to me! I REALLY do live in Qatar, I swear. Next to camel riding the Disboards are my favorite things. No, I hate riding camels, but I do see them often. We are Americans living here for a few years. DH is an Accountant for an oil company and I am the Queen of our villa and ruler over our children and pets.
Now I am off to read the report you have finished!

hi CJ, I'm gonna be a know-it -all here right now. First of all, I think you're confusing ZzUB with Happyhaunt, he's from Alabama I believe, she's from Canada. But they talk about each other a lot in they're reports so it's easy to mix them up. And Two: It seems folks appreciatate it when you update your title to include the last chapter entry and the date and page it's on.
Just go to the first page of your trip report, and hit "edit" at the bottom. When the screen changes, then hit "Advance Edit". Then you'll be able to change the title to include new info.
Well, Mr, Know-It-All, if you don't know what ZZUB did to that bathroom in Canada (Epcot's version, that is), it's clear to me that you haven't kept up with your trip-report reading. All caught up in writing your own, now, are you? :snooty:

The new phone books are here! The new phone books are here!
It's a good thing you started at 2:30 in the morning or you might never have gotten there! So sorry about the pain dilemma--a BC Powder is the only other thing I can think of that might have been a little better than ibuprofen! rotfl2:
Ok, I think I'm going to speak for a lot of people here, what is BC Powder? Sounds like something I'd buy on Halsted St. from a guy named Carlos.
I'd post the popcorn smilie guy, but if your stomach is anything like mine (and I am guessing it is) maybe we shall forgo the popcorn.
Subbing!
:thumbsup2
Hi Java, nice to meetcha! Your right about the popcorn though, and even though it smells so good when you walk in, movie popcorn is the worst.
Marking this thread! How did I get so lost? Mony had to point me over here!
Thanks, Mony!
Hi BackstageGal, nice to meetcha!
Mother Superior, if I have to start chewing those dang things to make them work faster, I think that individual battle is probably lost by then. I see you like that decline on rt. 24 also. Diane has gotten a little bit better though recently. I no longer have to duct tape her and throw her in the back.
Your welcome!
Hold it. You have a ticky in your siggy for a trip 18 months away? Why not just post a picture of an abacas and be done with it?
OK, I protest!!!!! Not sure what, just that I cant find it it on the boards!
Why cant I find this ????????
Hopefully ths will mark my spot.
Thanks bunches to Mony for the link!!!!!!!!!1:hug:
Ok, what's going on here? Even Marita is double posting. That's four of us so far.
Ride the pony! Mony Mony sent me here, and I'm loving it.
I knew who Ray Kroc was. He's a legend in CA too.
Can't wait to hear more about your trip.
Hi Wheat, nice to meet you too. But do you always do what Monymony says to do? She'll turn on you. Trust me, I know.
I adore the title of your report!!
Kathy
Kathy, I haven't seen you in a long time. Welcome back!
lovin your trip report... and I know this is TMI, but I know how you feel when you cannot get to the rest stop fast enough.. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
I cannot wait to hear about your "Free Hot Continental Breakfast"... and of course your trip to the world.
What amazes me, is how many folks are interested in the HOT Continental Breakfast. No, I had never heard of it before either. Montana Disney Fan is pretty darn close though. We'll get to it.

Hmmm....afterther Reindeer reference, i hope it's not rasin bagels:scared1:
Thanks for the update! I can't wait for more!!!
Oh, did Marshall Field's go out of business and see out to Macy? I'm so sorry, I didn't know. I do have some nice fastpasses for Horizon's though.
And I was starting to think that my reindeer slipped through the cracks. Nope, you caught that too.
Wow this TR is eventful already and you're still on the road :rotfl:
Don't worry DisneyJo, it will peter out. After a while most people just go to the last page to see if the butler did it.
Woohoo! I'm strange! .
(Psst, Nebo...food and wine festival, October, see you there?)
For the last 3 years, this is the time right now when I'm planning the Flower Power may trip. Now, even an Oct. trip seems like an impossibility. So sad, so sad.
Great update, by the way! Very amusing. I think I'll use 'and we're off' on our next trip. I wonder if the stewardesses would appreciate me yelling it though? :confused3
If you use that battle cry on a plane, don't be surprised if they make it come true! It works better in cars.
Just checking in to say Hello :wave2: and that I love your trip reports, you are a very entertaining writer. I think I may have posted on your first report but I have been following along for all of them. :)
Hellos Kris, see the fun you've been missing?

We have quite a few false starts leaving our house as well...usually it'sDh's fault, what's with you men?
I don't doubt it one bit, since the guy is usually driving when you leave home and his mind is already on the road, and the woman is already wondering how long before she can slip that pillow out!
hi, nebo! i was sent over here by the peeps on the DISappearing peeps thread. i keep hearing of these people named nebo and smidgy and i'm here to find out what the heck everyone's talking about!
that would be called monteagle. i live in georgia and my entire family is in nashville, hence lots of road trips over this stretch of interstate. i'm used to it now as long as i have my gum to help with the ear-popping. tell smidgy that if she can overcome her fear long enough to open her eyes while coming down the mountain and going towards chattanooga it's a GORGEOUS view! i don't know if it was daylight when you guys were going through there but it's really pretty.
Hi Punkin, I'm wondering, has anybody dissapeared yet? You are right though, that stretch is a gorgeous view, and I make a point to try and point out everything I can when I'm driving to Smidgy.

Hi nebo :) I’m still reading your last trippy but just found this one. Nice to be here from the sort of start… Our trips have always been during the holiday, we go between Thanksgiving and Christmas…it’s wonderful…going next time in January, will be interesting to see regular DW :yay:
I am famous for tinkering with a trip, I just can't help it
This is 90% of the fun…tinkering=months of Disney fun
Then I saw it, and sure enough, it did! This deer was by the side of the road, (which she saw and ergo, the scream), and then bolted right in front of me, which I saw.
I just swerved, wasn't even close, but it did get your attention though.
"Please, next time if you must scream, at least scream "DEER!" Ok, DEAR!?"
Ha ha! While driving home on the highway one night a deer jumped out in front of us  … He swerved and almost hit a semi truck :scared1: …yes I screamed…the funny thing though, is that for the rest of the drive home we were all so on edge, everything we saw looked like a deer getting ready to jump in front of us… I screamed at more mailboxes than I’d care to admit:sad2:
One thing nice about this drive this time, is that even though there is so little light, it was 21 degrees when we left this morning, and the further we drive, the warmer it gets.
This is one of my favorite parts of driving to DW! We start off in winter coats, mittens, scarves and hats..slowly start to peel the layers off as we drive south… by the end of the drive we’re in shorts and t-shirts…sux going back and getting colder and colder…
Smart man ;)
I actually joined in 1997 but they reset everyone in 1999 so I had to start over. I remember being really pissed about that also. I musta had an easy life if that bothered me.
Me to MDF. This is precisely why I am McKeefamily3..I joined back in oh 98 I think and back then every time they upgraded the server I lost all of my stuff. I had to start over 3 times :headache:
Enjoying the trippy… so far so good …can’t wait to hear about free hotel food. ...

I believe in 97. Around that time anyway.
I can remember a BBS of some sort in the Fall of '95/Spring of '96. I was trying to plan my first trip then. Boy, was I young!
Of course, this was all done at my undergrad college since there was no way I could afford the hourly rates they were charging on connections at the time.
Heh, now I know how my dad feels when he describes party lines and the advent of electricity in his town. Eesh! :lmao:

Nebo, I can't believe you don't have BC powders up there! Must be a southern thing. There's BC Powders and Goody's Powders which are heaven-sent when you have a pounding headache (we used to even have them at work in the vending machine). They are, I believe, a mixture of aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine in a powdered form in a little paper wrapper like a chewing gum wrapper. You open it up, tilt your head back and pour it down your throat, then take a sip of your beverage of choice. Pretty nasty going down, but boy is it worth it. Next trip this way, you should stop at any gas station on your way down south, once you get past Kentucky, I'd say, and I know you'll find them. If not, I'll be glad to mail you some!:thumbsup2
P.S. I can't believe your following already on this trip report! This will go on till Christmas--yay!
Oh believe me I haven't been missing the fun, just quietly following along.
I guess great minds must think alike, however I've had the Suessism in my siggie since I signed up. It's my motto and I live by it. Looking forward to the next installment.
Kris, that is strange though, don't you think? I came arcross that line in a Bathroom Reader, and just loved it.
Great report so far. :thumbsup2 Sadly we didn't make out to see the decorations this year, hanging head, so I'll enjoy your account. Hi, Welcome aboard. Hopefully I can get us down there soon, so I can start posting some of these pictures.

Cm4, I think you have to delete the rest, and just save the single line you want to quote. And no, the fries aren't wrapped up in the hot dog, they are wrapped up with the hot dog. One big package of dripping love.

Nice to be here from the sort of start… Our trips have always been during the holiday, we go between Thanksgiving and Christmas…it’s wonderful…going next time in January, will be interesting to see regular DW :yay: Greeting to the McKee family! I would think that january could be a big letdown if you are used to seeing all the decorations. Even when we go in Sept. I miss the may flowers at Epcot.
This is 90% of the fun…tinkering=months of Disney fun
I couldn't agree more. Would you send me your next itinerary so I can mess with it please?
Ha ha! Again, right again. Once it happens, it takes about 200 miles before you can relax again.
This is one of my favorite parts of driving to DW!

Yep, I know exactly what she's talking about. I can't say I've ever tried them but I know many that swear by the powders over the pills. It's definitely a southern thing.
My southern cousins are always talking about taking 'powders' for their aches and pains. I'm not sure if they're more effective or if it's just a placebo effect, but they won't take the pill versions. Of course, they also don't pour them down their throat and then drink something. They just pour them into their drink and have at it. :scared1:

Hi Missy, nice to meetcha. Nice screen name, I almost took that one myself. It's amazing what you can use a Quija Board for isn't it?
Thank you one and all for posting and reading, hopefully we can keep the laughs flowing.
Perry, Ga:
Wednsday morning arrived with a groan. Groan on the inside, dark on the outside.
At six thirty in the morning, I'm really glad we pushed as far as we did yesterday. My back is killing me, as I knew it would be, but even if we pulled up a couple of hundred miles earlier, it wouldn't have made a difference to how I felt today. So at least today is a much shorter drive.
For those of you wondering, yes, Diane drives, she just doesn't drive on expressways or highways. She's a good driver otherwise, so I never push that issue. After loading up the car again, I pull it down to the lobby, and we go in for the delectable Hot continental breakfast that is also FREE!
However, I am confused.
It is still pitch black outside. This time of year in Carpentersville, it would be starting to be lighting outside. Let's see, the sun rises in the east, and in december, is in the southern hemisphere.
Hmm, we have driven towards the east, and are much further south now.
So, it should be getting light earlier, right?
But, then we lost an hour, time zone wise, and I guess we haven't made that whole hour up in our location. Geesh!
On arrival inside of the motel lounge, I immediately knew why they call it a "Continental Breakfast."
There were two hispanics, an Asian, and a guy that looked Pakistani already in there. And I'm not counting the hillbilly:laughing:
Hey, we're an equal opportunity offender.
But not a donut or bagel in sight.
Here's the menu:
Fake cheerios, milk, coffee, frozen waffles, hard boiled eggs, bread and oatmeal. The closest thing to any kind of meat, was the dead cockroach in the corner. The only thing that came hot was the coffee, it was more of a, "You make it hot" continental breakfast.
I really didn't care, it's not like I was looking forward to a Cracker Barrel breakfast anyway, besides, yesterdays' memories are not that far removed.
I had coffee, a waffle I stuck in the toaster, and bread I stuck in the toaster.
Good enough for me. The last thing I wanted to do was turn this Continental Breakfast into something else.
Like an "In-Continental Breakfast", if you get my drift.
I was just thinking, there are a lot of newcomers here, but we have not begun to take any pictures as of yet. So just so you might have an idea of whom, or what you're reading, I'm posting a picture from my first trip report for the heck of it. This is from "If it's tuesday, this must be Epcot" and , if anything, it should thin out the readers a bit. :lmao:

Anybody still there? Hello?
By the way, I'm the one in the middle.
On the way to the car, Smidgy notices that I'm already doing the Quasimodo walk, but there's not a thing I can do about it. I've already taken two aspirin and two profens, that's all my stomach can take for now.
And the Santa Fe is still the best vehicle I've ever driven down there in.
It's made in South Korea, and we bought it new in 03. The first time I turned on the radio, I couldn't understand a word they were saying. :rolleyes1
But this small SUV isn't happy unless it's totally packed, and crossing many state line borders.
Did I mention that it's also built in Mexico?
(mom, I'm sorry about that last joke, really, I am)
By seven, we're back on the road, and I'm still looking for the sun.
And deer.
Finally, it starts getting light out, and I punch in 75 on the cruise.
I hardly ever push it too much, for one thing it cuts down on gas milage, and secondly, I don't have a radar detector. If you're constantly looking for cops, it takes away any relaxment you get from using the cruise, and adds stress to your body instead. This back doesn't need any more stress.
With the cruise control set at a meager 5 over, it took less than 5 minutes before the "nasty" signs reared their ugly heads.
And they progressively got meaner.
"Construction ahead 2 miles"
then
"Speed limit 50"
"Construction for the next 32 miles"
"Speed radar timed and enforced"
"SPEEDING FINES DOUBLED IN CONSTRUCTION ZONE"
it was the last one that got me to shut down the cruise though
"DID YOU EVER SEE, 'MACON COUNTY JAIL?"
Yep, that last one will do it. I HAVE seen Macon County Jail, and I'd like to remain a vir..... well, never mind.
I know one thing is going to have to change this day, compared to yesterday. If my back is going to make it, there will have to be plenty of stops. Luckily, this section of 75 has a few of them.
We turned into true believers of President Bush's policy of "No rest area left behind".
Pulled into the Tifton rest area, then about 50 miles later, had to stop again for gas, then hit the Florida welcom center. This normally totally goes against all my driving habits, where the only time we stop is for gas. I did notice something else I had forgotten about when we crossed the state line.
Our first trip down to Disney was in '92 with the kids. The first days' drive ended in a town just south of Atlanta called Stockbridge, and we ordered a pizza that night for dinner. The leftovers went in the cooler.
By the time we hit Florida, there was a terrible smell in the car, and when we got out at the welcome center, Diane and I thought it was from the pizza, and threw the rest of it out. Within 20 miles, the smell had gone away, and even though we didn't understand it, we were just relieved to have not saved it and eaten any the next day.
Until the return trip, home.
At right around the same area, the smell came back. I remember saying, "Either that pizza is still sitting in the garbage can over there, or we through out a perfectly good pizza for nothing."
Today, that smell is back. I have no idea where it comes from, but next time you drive the 75 route down, see if you notice it.
Ok, photo intermission time again. This time of Smidgy, same trip report.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n126/nebo100/09-03-2006-13.jpg
Our last rest area not left behind was in Ocala, then we took the Florida Turnpike. The motel de jour was the only one I had made a ressie in advance, a Travelodge Suites, maingate, in Kissimee.
After exiting the turnpike, this motel can be a bit dodgy.
There are two of them on rt. 192, the Irlo Bronson Highway, and they are both named "Maingate". Only difference is the address, and one of them has the word, "orange" in parenthesis in the title.
Our ressies are for the not orange one.
Why book in advance you ask for an early december night in the middle of the week?
35 a night, that's why.
ANd, a suite! Never stayed in a suite before.
On the way to it, we passed the other one, and it looked really nice. So did that part of town, also, a real touristy look was everywhere.
Go karts, mini golf, ticket centers. Cool. Now I feel like I'm on vacation.
But our motel was still a couple miles down the road, and this area wasn't quite as "spiffy".
We checked in, got our ground floor room, but we had to walk around a corner from where the car was to where they hid the lousy smokers room in the back, where the lousy smokers belong.
That's ok, considering what I know is coming, I'm just glad to get a smoking room, period.
By the way, the definition of a suite?
A huge gigantic add-on to a regular room, that has a pull-out sofa in it.
I started laughing the second we opened the door. You could have put a pool table in there if you wanted it was so big.
Heck, you could have put a pool in there, but all there was was a sofa bed.
They did have a pool though, and since our summer tan has almost totally disappeared by now, I was changed and ready to check it out. That was the first time I met the stalker.
Diane was still unpacking and changing, so I said I'd meet her by the pool.
Wearing just a bathing suit and sneakers, a towel over my shoulder, and carrying a can of PBR and my trusty Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, you can picture what I looked like.
Through the parking lot, I passed a worker pushing a hopper of branches.
I did the polite head nod, which he countered with, "Heading out to the pool are ya?"
I wanted to say, "Nope, got a job interview, here's your sign."
Instead, I said, "Nope, the beach, which is warmer, the Gulf side or Atlantic?"
Yeah, I suppose that wasn't much nicer, what can I say?
At first he just looked at me, then he kind of laughed and went on his way.
It was not a pretty pool, plus it was right by the road with a lot of traffic noise. However, it is december, yesterday morning it was in the teens where I was, and now I'm sitting by a pool, and no airplanes where involved.
Later when Diane joined me, she said she just ran into the strangest man, I said hi to him, and he said "Go ahead, he's waiting for you." I had to laugh.
A short "aside" here. This is now our 12th time down to the world of Disney. Nine of those times, we drove. Part of that reason is the tinkerability factor, the other part is that it's still a bit cheaper to drive, and thirdly, I'm not crazy about flying.
Just don't like the helplessness feeling about being packed into an aluminum cookie dough tube with wings.
We flew down in september of '06 and it was not one of my shining moments. It was bad enough when I found out our flight number was 451, as in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, but the whole ordeal started out with a whimper when I saw this little gray haired old man get on the plane ahead of me.
Then found out he was the pilot.
I lovingly referred to him as Pontius, the Pilot. I went into great depth about this plane trip in my second trip report, Feeding Nebo and if anyone wants, I suppose I can find it in the archives and post a link to it.
At the pool, we have it all to ourselves, but after feeling the water, uh uh, no way I'm going in there. That's ok, I'm happy just to be here. To me this was just incredible, we knew coming down this time of year can be a bit dicey with the weather, and any pool time would be a plus. It was about 66 that day for a high, but as long as the sun was out, it felt great.
Two hours later we headed back to the room, but stopped by the car for a second to get some things.
Our buddy was there, too.
Looking into the mostly still packed Santa Fe, he said, "You guys must be on vacation."
Yeah, no getting one over on this guy.
"Nope, just taking our luggage for a drive."
As Bill Engvall would have said there just wasn't enough signs for this guy.
In the room, I am now in serious manhattan time. You know, for pain maintenance. Dinner plans were going to be to finish off the Popeye's chicken we brought with us, but instead we opted for the Mcdonalds' that was next door. After changing I wanted to get it when it was still light out and we could walk, even though we weren't ready to eat just yet. No problem, our room had a microwave.
Upon the return trip from Macdonalds, of course I'm carrying the big white bags with the big M on them.
Wanna guess what's coming up?
You got it!
"Hi again." "Went to the ol Mickeyds', huh?"
By now I'm thinking we are his sole entertainment in life.
"Nope, went to Microsoft, just had dinner with Bill Gates and he let us take home the leftovers."
Back in the room, I put the whole bag in the microwave. It stays pretty warm in there, and when it's all together, you only need to zap the whole bag for about 40 seconds.
One problem though.
It's not plugged in.
And the cord comes two feet short of the outlet.
Ok, I'll just move the microwave.
Uh uh. It is totally and completely bolted down to the top of the dresser.
Ok, I'll just pull the dresser over.
Uh uh. It is totally and completely bolted to the wall.
So, it boiled down to :
I can't heat the food, that's in the micro, that's bolted to the dresser, that's bolted to the wall, ,,,
That lived in the house that Jack, built. :happytv:
The guy at the counter told us our room had a working microwave, so I didn't understand this, unless somebody stole the extension cord.
I explained the dilemma to Diane, and of course, she had to go and check out all the variables to see for herself, because, you know, I can't be trusted.
:sad2:
After she saw everything I said was true, she stood back and looked at it, then she solved the problem.
SHE RIPPED IT OFF THE TOP OF THE DRESSER!:scared1:
I'm not kidding.
I looked again, and now it was two feet further down, bolts lying on the floor, and she has it humming happily away.

I'm getting to the point that I think that the free motel/hotel breakfasts aren't worth it any more. I would rather find a donut or bagel place and get something instead of the "free breakfast".
To anyone out there that loves me, or at least likes me just a little, I need help.
You have no idea the torture I just endured. After 3 hours of writing this last chapter, when I hit submit reply, that little blue line that slowly fills up stopped filling up. This was followed by "this page cannot be displayed". THis has happened to me before, so now I always copy it first just in case. But this time it also kicked me off of AOL, and froze up the entire puter. So I knew the copying was deleted. Luckily, this time it went through, or I'd have a smashed computer and monitor right now.
my question is this.
If when I'm done writing, and I send it to myself in an email, which I know I can do, what will it look like when I paste it into a trip report when I boot up again? I'm not sure if the margins will all be messed up, and if the pictures will then go through, no what I mean, Jean? Has anybody tried it this way? No, I don't have "Word", I've never used it. I just sit here and type, then hit submit. So, any thought on posting a chapter from an email, just in case? Thanks, neebs

Nebo, if you are using a Windows machine you should have either Notepad or Wordpad (or both).
You can type your stuff in there and save it to your hard drive before you paste it into the DIS. I usually paste the image links in and all.
As for the formatting thing, I am not sure if it will transfer over using notepad or wordpad. Sorry, I do use Word when I do this. Experiment with this and try it, see what works.

OMG :rotfl2:
Wanna guess what's coming up?
You got it!
"Hi again." "Went to the ol Mickeyds', huh?"
By now I'm thinking we are his sole entertainment in life.
"Nope, went to Microsoft, just had dinner with Bill Gates and he let us take home the leftovers." Just think how boring your day would have been with out him :rotfl2:

Yea, what Colleen said.... not sure I'd even try to email it to myself, should just be able to save it to your computer ("save as") before you try to post it.
p.s. - remind me to not anger Smidgy, I've seen my wife move logs around but I really don't think she'd have it in here to rip off something that was bolted down! But I guess that's why I usually just say "yes ma'am" and move on:angel:

Ok, this installment was priceless! I'll even forgive the hillbilly reference since the rest was so funny!
Aren't the Bathroom Readers great? My DH got one for Christmas from my aunt, and I keep it in the car to read while waiting for little whogirl to get out of school. Yesterday, one of my friends tapped on the window and said "whatcha readin'?". Now, how do you explain that?:rotfl: "It's so interesting reading about the Pilgrims that I didn't even see you standing there!"
Your stalker cracked me up, as did the microwave. We women can always find a way!
(And we'll compromise on the BC Powder--go ahead and mix it into your Sunny D bottle.) Thank you to Maraena and Rhonda for backing me up!
Maraena
01-11-2008, 11:19 AM
Great installment! I was laughing about your stalker but then I started feeling really guilty. In my home state, we just call that friendliness. In fact, I've been guilty of asking such obvious questions just to get a conversation moving. I've also been guilty of striking up conversations solely on illegal immigration just to goad some of my more conservative family members into an argument. Yeah, I'm evil. :flower3:
What I want to know is if Smidgy, after ripping the microwave off the bureau, did the whole muscle-man flexing thing. You know, where you bow your shoulders and flex your arm muscles and make some sort of manly grunt noise. Yeah, I can just picture that. :woohoo: Go Smidgy!
I'll just be the oddball here. I love, love hotels with free continental breakfasts and coffee makers in the room. I end up traveling a bit for conferences and I loathe the high-priced convention hotels that don't even have a coffee maker in the hotel room. (Seriously, I'm paying $150+ for a room and you can't give me a stinking coffee maker?! Yeah, that irks me.)
Anyhow, great installment! I had to read a bit of it to the DFi and he was laughing along with me.

Nebo, great update!! Thanks for posting. I still have my no drinking while reading your report rule going! :rotfl:
Here's the menu:
Fake cheerios, milk, coffee, frozen waffles, hard boiled eggs, bread and oatmeal. The closest thing to any kind of meat, was the dead cockroach in the corner. The only thing that came hot was the coffee, it was more of a, "You make it hot" continental breakfast.
Pretty typical for a "continental breakfast".
I had coffee, a waffle I stuck in the toaster, and bread I stuck in the toaster.
Yup, that's the "hot" part!
Anybody still there? Hello?
By the way, I'm the one in the middle.
Hmmm, thought you were the one on the right?!?! :confused3 Guess I should've paid more attention to your previous reports. :lmao:
turned on the radio, I couldn't understand a word they were saying. :rolleyes1
Awww, Nebo, Nebo, Nebo. What are we going to do with you. :rotfl2:
"Construction ahead 2 miles"
then
"Speed limit 50"
"Construction for the next 32 miles"
"Speed radar timed and enforced"
"SPEEDING FINES DOUBLED IN CONSTRUCTION ZONE"
it was the last one that got me to shut down the cruise though
"DID YOU EVER SEE, 'MACON COUNTY JAIL?"
A real threat. Impressive of them. ;)
We turned into true believers of President Bush's policy of "No rest area left behind".
Our boys were this way when they were younger. Just saying. :goodvibes
Just don't like the helplessness feeling about being packed into an aluminum cookie dough tube with wings.
What a visual! :lmao:
Then found out he was the pilot.

That's ok, I'm happy just to be here. To me this was just incredible, we knew coming down this time of year can be a bit dicey with the weather, and any pool time would be a plus. It was about 66 that day for a high, but as long as the sun was out, it felt great.

And the Santa Fe is still the best vehicle I've ever driven down there in.
It's made in South Korea, and we bought it new in 03.
Hey, I've got an '03 Santa Fe, too! Looooove my car...
But this small SUV isn't happy unless it's totally packed, and crossing many state line borders.
::yes:: Strange that a car made by a company headquartered in such a small country seems so stinkin' happy to make road trips, isn't it? ;)
On the way to it, we passed the other one, and it looked really nice. So did that part of town, also, a real touristy look was everywhere.
I think I know where this is going...
But our motel was still a couple miles down the road, and this area wasn't quite as "spiffy".
Ye-ep.

OK back to Still Feeding Nebo, you just checked into CBR.
god, you sound just like my husband. whenever i "verify" what he tells me he always says, "what.....you don't trust me??????"
nope, that's why i vowed before all our family and all our friends and god and whoever else happened to be walking by the cecil b. day chapel in athens, georgia on april 13th, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. that i would spend the rest of my life.....with someone......i don't trust!

Hey, whaddaya want for $35 a night?
:rotfl2: CJ'smom, I like you a real lot. :rotfl: And yes, this was exactly what I expected for 35 a night.
I'm getting to the point that I think that the free motel/hotel breakfasts aren't worth it any more. I would rather find a donut or bagel place and get something instead of the "free breakfast".
You got that right! Honestly, all I want is a cup of coffee before I hit the road. Anything more than that, and you're asking for it. Hang on, gotta refill.
A regular UN delegate meeting huh?:lmao:
Was it was of those creepy laughs?:scared:
You go girl!
Mo, I know I just butchered up your great post, but when the rest doesn't come through, what can I do?
And yes, he not only had the creepy laugh, but the really side smirk/smile to go with it. As far as the "you go girl", part of it goes with her ripping the microwave off the counter, I guess I was a fool, (imagine that), to be explained next chapter.
Ok, I just saw that one of my favorite people just posted, and it reminded me.
Tonight is the night that our very own beloved Philadisney becomes famous, she is profiled on the tv show, "WHat not to Wear." From what I know, it's on The Learning Channel at nine tonight, what I'm not sure of is whether it's nine eastern or nine central. So tune in early. I give her a lot of credit for letting us all know this, so please, hold all the snide remarks until after we see her.
Then? We get her!
No, really, for me, this counts as a famous person that I almost know. And a nice one at that. So be nice.
:thumbsup2
Thanks Javamom, to be honest, I'm not even sure I have notepad or notebook here anymore. This lousy confuser turns ten next month, and a lot of things have come and gone in the hard drive. This thing is like the old car that has 175000 miles on it. I just can't turn "Old Betsy" out to pasture!
wow i can't even pick a segment to quote from this last installment because it was all HILARIOUS :rotfl2: "No rest area left behind"....dining with Bill Gates...Pontius, the Pilot...
I love that Smidgy ripped the microwave up...that is awesome.
Nebo, I have to go to the DMV on Saturday - want to come? I bet you could even make that interesting
My dear, trust me on this. People that have to go to the DMV do so not for entertainment, but because there is a reason they have to be there.
And I was just there last month. Celebrated my birthday there as a matter of fact. You know, to get my license renewed.
By the time I left, there was nobody that wanted to be near me, not even for entertainment, but , ,,,, I did get my license!

Do you have any kind of Word Processing Program. Works, Corel, anything..help a girl out here:confused3
Janet, I honestly don't know. I take it nobody is too impressed with my sending my self a pasted email, idea, huh?

open whatever "doc" program your computer has, type your reply in "advanced" mode. copy what is in your post and paste it to your doc program, save it "as" something before you hit "post"

Colleen! Don't make me come over there! Ok, how would I find this "doc" progream? I don't believe I have Word, but I have named and saved files before, mostly under "my pictures". My whole problem is just when I hit submit on the disboards, sometimes it just doesn't go through. I suppose I could just experiment during a call out session, and see what happens. Ok, next time.

Nebo - not sure what version of Windows you are on, but it should be something like this - click your Start Menu (here's where I can't remember if it's different for older versions - if you don't have a Start Menu just ignore the rest...:scared: ), click All Programs, click Accessories, in the list you should see a program called Notepad or Wordpad. This is a word processing program that you can write your stuff in and save it, then copy it and paste it into the message board window. Good luck!! :)
I don't know, guess I'm a complete failure. I tried twice, hit the save as button, but when I looked for it, and opened it, evey little icon or smiley had it's own file, the only thing that didn't have it's own file was the text. Guess next time I try, I'll have to try the copy and paste thing into an empty folder somewhere. anyway,,,

Thanks, Javamom, you knew I'd jump at that bait you dangled in front of me.
Wait.
It is only Jan 11th.
How can I be this far behind again? Already?
I will try to catch up.
We were there a bit later in December for our first ever WDW at ChristmasmyGodwheredidallthesepeoplecomefrom trip.
Imagine that.
Mrs. Silly, I was looking for you when we were down there. AND MAN! Did you call that right! I thought it was supposed to be empty this time of year.

sighh..... it actually was stuck in a rack type thing that was bolted to the dresser.now how do they expect us to use it that way? It was stuck in there pretty good, and it DID take some doing, but I unstuck it. ( see, the situation DID need perusing after nebo "checked it out":rotfl: ) ps I put it back in when we left so the stalker wouldn't steal it and blame us!
travelodge... what a way to save a few bucks! the other one was just a bit more expensive. we were right across from a trailer park.. I was checking out, maybe we could live there....um... nevermind. the walk to mickeyD's? and the wait for the food? let's just say I was glad Nebo was with me.
philadisney!!!!!! loved the show... are you CUTE! if I had a third son (both mine are married) I'd be playin' cupid right now. (however, I would run back and steal my micky and alice bags out of the trash.. the NERVE of those makeover people!
Thanks Diane! I'm glad you were able to catch it - I have been saying that my DIS friends would appreciate it the most and it seems I was right!
I know what you mean about running back and grabbing the purses out of the trash. ;) ;) ;) I REALLY wanted that Alice bag back!
:rotfl: And thanks for the plug Nebo, even if it does include a threat! I hope you enjoyed the show half as much as I enjoy your prose!
Kelly, we watched the show last night as if we were watching a good friend, or, as it turned out, a daughter. You have the greatest smile and personality, we were clapping and cheering you on the entire way. WTGG!:yay:

Any chance that show might be broadcast or saved into a file (illegally or not!) onto the net? We're too cheap to pay for cable. Yeah, it's sad and we know it's sad but it's what keeps us visiting my parents fairly often, since they do have cable.
Anyhow, if anyone knows where I can get a copy of it, let me know.

You know, I used to come home from work, and find the entire living room rearranged, that she said she did by herself. THis wouldn't seem so strange, except for the little fact that we have a PIANO! But when it comes to taking the garbage out to the curb,,,,,,,,,,
Diane, how come everybody loves the violent side of you? You been telling them things I should know about?
the first year we had an income tax refund: down payment on a house. the next year: a PIANO!!! bless his little ole heart! Doesn't matter how many times I play Amy Grant, moonlight sonata, bach, (he puts up with me, and still squeezes my piano in the townhouse, and butchers my playing, he knows how much it means to me!!!! all together now"aw shucks!"

Ok, I'm trying something here, Shawn and Askelton are the guinea pigs. I'm doing it normal, then trying a save as and reposting it.
I itch, I scratch, scratch and itch,,,,,, oh wait, wrong network.,.,., I however second the too cheap for cable thing, but I'm more than willing to shell out $45/mo. for broadband, go figure.... ABC puts Lost online by the next morning, so I'm good.

NEBO! YAY!!! :) I'm only on pg 5 here, but your drive sounds thrilling. My DH might have a chance to get to DW at the end of Feb and I'm trying to think of ways that it would be possible to pack the kids up and go too.
Would it be possible for you to Post or PM me the route you take?
We live right off of 80, and since you guys probably come down 294 I'd be ever greatful if you could let me know how you get there - and also how long it takes (driving time)?

Hey, ex Algonquin girl, you're right there, just take 80 to 65, in Nashville transfer over to 24, then in Chattanooga over to 75. Take that all the way past Ocala, to the Florida Turnpike, the easy way then is to exit at I-4 and follow the signs. There is a shorter way from the turnpike, called the Western Way, if your going directly to Disney, just ask the toll booth person about that if you want to save a few miles. By the way, if you go to I-4, you want the exit that says "to Tampa", NOT, to Orlando.

Emily, not sure I can help you here. We did tape a bunch of it, but I do mean tape, and not sure if it came out.
Chapter 4.
It's cold.
Very cold.
Windchill is at ten degrees.
As I sit here writing I am surrounded by a barren and desolate world.
I look out the window, and am confronted by a bleak landscape made up of all the different shades of gray in the spectrum.
Is anybody out there?
Can anybody hear me?
I think not.
Knowing that this may well be my last entry, I have decid,,,,,,, "Steve"?
"Hello"?
"Huh?"
"Geez, what's the matter with you, yes I know you're a bit depressed from the winter blahs, but "C"MON!" "Now you're beginning to depress me!"
"Oh, ok, sorry. MY BAD. Won't happen again. Honest. At least until tomorrow. "
Take TWO.
Thursday morning, the sixth of December, we awoke in Kissimee, and got the heck out of there before our stalker/buddy, showed up.
I felt a little guilty doing the cut and run, but this was one heck of a busy day planned.
And it begins with a non continental breakfast.
They didn't even have a "state-inental breakfast".
But they did have coffee, and soon we were on our way.
I had one more chore before we left, remember?
Yeah, I tried to put the microwave back on the dresser where it was mounted, but couldn't figure out how to make it look normal.
The bolts and brackets were all in the way, and it sat there kind of like a "Leaning Tower of Pizza" microwave. After one last potty run, when I came out, somehow, it looked all normal again.
I walked past, gave it an elbow, and the thing didn't budge. Not an inch!
There is magic in Diane, I'm still discovering it to this day.
First stop? Walgreens.
Oh, you betcha, I have been a complete saint this far.
But enough is enough!
With great trepidation, I handed over my bottle to be refilled, knowing that I am really still 3 days early for the refill.
My heart soared when he got off the computer and said it will take about 20 minutes.
(Yes, I know, heart soaring isn't what it used to be)
So, for about 20 minutes we played the little ducks just quack, quacking around the store. Then she found the clothes aisle.
Overhead, was a big sign.
"Big Blowout Sale" "All Disney merchandise half off!" "Last Week!"
And I looked at the sign.
Anybody know what's coming?
C'mon, if you don't, then it's probably just me.
"Holy Cow, how stupid is that?"
"What," she asked?
"That sign, why is it there, just to tease?"
Even Smidgy wasn't catching on, "What in the world are you talking about?"
"Right there, it says big blowout sale, last week, geesh, talk about rubbing something in,,,,sorry we couldn't make it last week."
She stood there and looked at me, as if I wasn't even there. Then she walked away.
I have that effect on women.
I got my drugs, and on to Disney.
Yay, whoo hoo, All Star Music here we come.
At registration, things are much simpler now. No smoking for everyone!
We were assigned a room, and Diane asked if it was a parking lot view.
The girl didn't seem really to sure of herself in answering, nor was she interested in looking into the matter. I told Diane, hey, it's 48 a night, who cares, if anything, our car will be closer. So Smidgy didn't argue, and after check in we went over to concierge.
All we needed to do was add one day to the passes.
You wouldn't believe how long this took. At least 20 minutes. The girl even left to go check with someone else, and moved like a snail.
Finally, it was set.
WHoo Hoo! On to the room!
And then I heard these words come out of Dianes' mouth.
"Can we have a printout of all our dinner reservations?"
I wanted to strangle her!
I think the inept girl back there wanted to also.
At last I pull the car around to the section where our room is, and we grab a few light things and head out in search of.
The rooms facing the parking lot,,,, uh uh, no room for us here. And we just started following the signs on the wall. It turned out, our room was second from the end by the cut-through, and facing the couryard closer to the piano pool section.
It was an outstanding room location! For once, Diane actually thanked me for telling her not to complain. I had a feeling the girl didn't know what she was talking about. We were about 3 rooms away from being in a "preferred section."
With our car not too far away, we brought our own luggage in ourselves.
With smiley faces, all around, we also brought out happiness into the room.
I took a picture!http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n126/nebo100/december/music044.jpg
And that was the end of all smiley faces concerning out stay at the All Star Music Resort.
No, I'm not going to leave it at that. Good times where still had there.
But it sure wasn't because of the resort, itself!
We had just enough time to unpack, then it was time to hitail it over to Epcot, for lunch at the Coral Reef, and catch the 5 o'clock show for the Candlelight Processional.
But our resort was just mobbed, it seemed to me. And mobbed with youngsters and a google amount of teenagers.
And all running and yelling every which way.
When I booked this resort, it actually started out as a AS sports, stay.
The code was good for music, or sports, or PO Riverside. Having just stayed at Riverside, plus, that was 104 a night, we chose sports because we have only stayed there one single night in out life. At Music, 4 years ago we stayed there 7 nights.
So I chose Sports.
And then I found that one of the pools was closed, so for the heck of it, I tried to change it to Movies.
Uh uh, no dice. But Music was available, so I switched to that.
AH, what I didn't know!!!!
I'm going to skip around here a bit, and just tell you it was utter, complete mayhem there.
There is this little thing going on there called Pop Warner, and football teams of all ages converge on Disney World.
At night it was a madhouse. I changed the name to "All Shout Music Resort."
And I'm not talking about "good shouting"
Twenty of them would come at you on a walkway, and dare you to step aside! And no, I didn't, nobody, BUT NOBODY!, tries to terrorize me at Disney!
Believe me, I am not making this up.
When we returned from Epcot, the first night early, they were everywhere, they had completely taken over all the smoking areas, the pools, the arcades, swearing and roughhousing, I knew it was just a matter of time before fighting broke out.
We went and complained to security, and got the "head nod" "I know, I know".
Let me tell you, nothing has ever sucked out the magic of being at Disney World like this stay did. From little kids to big kids, to groups of girls practicing their home team chants, it sucked. Trust me, at times it got even scarier, you could just see the mob mentality breaking out.
They would have to give me my room for free before I would ever stay there again, but it get's even better.
We were going to meet friends we met on this thread, from Cleveland, Disney fanatics like us, who were also bringing with them a newbie.
And I didn' want the newbie to see this as her first Disney experience.
On our second night we returned to find the whole resort in a youth mob chaos. At eleven at night, Diane went and complained again, and I went in search of chaperones.
Yeah, I found them. A group of moms huddling together drinking and smoking in the picnic area. And a huge group of dads smoking and drinking by a staircase.
Meanwhile, kids are just running everywhere, yelling and swearing, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and then I saw them. A family came in about midnight that night, and looked like they had been on the road all day. My heart went out to them, as they trudged to their room, about fifty teenagers were surrrounding them, all swearing and having a good ol time.
I wanted to run up to them, tell them, This is not how Disney normally is!
But I didn't, and I regret that even now.
I'm sorry, but it can't be all just laughs and jokes.
On a final note concerning the Pop Warner Debacle, we heard that 3 teams were evicted after a fight on Sat. night. Holy Cow! How do you get evicted from Disney? A fight between two Hawaian teams and one from Baltimore.
Sent on there way at 3 in the morning!
That's lovely, just lovely.
I can't leave it here. Nope, nope, nope.
Anywhoooo,,,,,
Once we settled in, I ran over to the pool area for a shot.
No, not that kind of shot, this kind of shot:
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n126/nebo100/december/music043.jpg
Then, we were on our way through the bus system over to Epcot.
We used one of our dining dinners for the Candlelight Processional. We have lunch at Coral Reef at two, then the early CP at five.
We got there about 11 teen, and immediately got a fastpass for SOARIN.
The fastpass said good from 2;05 to 3;05.
Perfect!
Time to try out my new theory.
Lunch was just fine, as I knew it would be, we have eaten here twice before, we both got the blackened catfish, it's not for everyone, kind of spicy, but we still like it a lot. Good thing too. I was out of commas.
After a smoke we headed over to the Land Pavillion. You know, to use our Soarin pass.
Uh oh, we are a half hour past the deadline. Oh, dear, what shall we do?
We went down, and showed our fastpasses.
And got waved right through.
Yes! I knew it. Good for the entire day.
No longer do I have to hurt innocent Japanese men trying to make my fastpass appointment, no longer do I have to throw my back out trying to get to BTMR. No longer do I have to worry about passing up the restroom and trying to keep it ,,,,,,, uh, anyway, I'm sure you get my drift.
On the way out, I grabbed a couple more. I knew we wouldn't use them today, but, hey, once again, I gotta know.
Now, please understand, we are Disney World veterans, if we aren't, then I'm not sure what the requirements would be.
But every once in a while, Disney throws me a change up. Yep, something I never saw coming, or didn't even know existed.
Like this picture you're about to see. We came into World Showcase from the Mexico end, and just enjoyed looking at all the sights , when one of the sights was this.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n126/nebo100/december/bridge047.jpg
I never even knew there was a bridge there, much less one that opened up like it did. I guess they did this for the special fireworks that night?
The strange thing was, this happened again later on this trip. But never once had it ever happened before!
Oh well, Disney is just full of surprises!
good night all, hugs

Arrgghh - wasn't it terrible? We stayed at All-Star Sports for one night, 12/8, and I have never wanted to get out of a place so badly. I'm quoting from my trip report so I don't have to type it all over again:
"The boys swam for about an hour. Then we headed back to the room to get ready for our dinner at Chef Mickey’s. This was the end of Pop Warner week – and note to self here – we will never stay at an All-Star Resort during Pop Warner week again! Even for one night! The kids were all over the resort unsupervised. The language was pretty bad. Luckily my kids didn't pick up on it. The resort was a mess – with trash and food all over the pool area. Disgusting."
AND
"We got back to the All-Star Sports about 8:30. Yahoo – our luggage arrived! We also found empty beer cans and pizza crusts on the railings. The police were there dealing with some drunk adult cheerleader coaches. Repeat – never stay at All Stars again during any part of Pop Warner week! "
Now, I have stayed at All-Star Movies and All-Star Music before, and some cheerleading groups were at the ASMo when we were there - but it was absolutely nothing like what we experienced during Pop Warner. Luckily my kids don't know the words they were hearing were bad, or they would have acquired a whole new vocabulary from that one night. And the trash and food and empty beer cans were still sitting all over the place the next morning when we left! Never, never again - did I say that already? :scared:
Rant off - Nebo, you may proceed! :)

Lurker coming out of hiding to let you know that the bridge is opened every night that Illuminations is done. It lets through boats with Illuminations "stuff". I only know this because I got stuck waiting for it once and asked the CM who was guarding the gate. Overall it is a relatively quick process though.

Yep, we think it is really cool to watch the barge of explosives go past. We spend a prodigious amount of time in the World Showcase and have caught the barge going out a few times.
So now I am dying to know if they let you use the fastpasses on another day. We have known about the return window being a 'suggestion' for many moons. I'd of told ya, if I knew you didn't know. We thought about trying to use our M::S fastpasses a few days late, but we have such bad luck with that ride we decided not to try it.
Sorry about the winter blah's. I'll refrain from giving the Austin weather report just now.

That would definatly be AWFULL, HORRIBLE just plumb unlawfull throw them all in jail for a newbie to have to go to DW and put up with all that!!!:headache:
We were 1st timers and that was a big part of the "magical" feeling. THe family friendly atmosphere. Of course I'm sure a few ears heard "THE WRATH OF NEBO!!!"
I love the check in CM. Now that is what I call experienced professional service!!!:rotfl:
Yah for getting the meds refilled!!!!!!! DH had 2 surgeries a couple of weeks ago and when released there was no pain meds prescribed. The orders said to use the Vikes at home. Now these were NOT prescribed by the surgeon these were for something else. Now he's several days away from being able to refill and only has a few left!!! He's trying to set up an appointment with his GP to throw hisself on their mercy!!

it's such a shame, because usually the Values are great! last time we were at AsMu I loved it. sure, we prefer the moderates, but if you need a disney fix and it's the only affordable option......
2 times I called front desk in the middle of the night(different nights) to ask somone to make the kids go to their rooms and stop running up and down the resort yelling and swearing (the chaperones obviously weren't going to:confused3 ) there should be a curfew, just like anywhere else. like nebo said, finally 3 big groups were kicked out.
but don't be afraid of the values. be very afraid of pop warner week, though!:rotfl:

Don't say it!
You said it:sad2:
She stood there and looked at me, as if I wasn't even there. Then she walked away.
Which is what any sane person would do:lmao:

And that was the end of all smiley faces concerning out stay at the All Star Music Resort.
Uh ohpopcorn::
Twenty of them would come at you on a walkway, and dare you to step aside! And no, I didn't, nobody, BUT NOBODY!, tries to terrorize me at Disney!
You tell them Nebo!:thumbsup2
[QUOTE=nebo;22585231] Yeah, I found them.
Figures and they'd be the first one's arguing if someone said something to "thier kid":sad2:
I wanted to run up to them, tell them, This is not how Disney normally is!
But I didn't, and I regret that even now. {/QUOTE]
[QUOTE=nebo;22585231] On a final note concerning the Pop Warner Debacle, we heard that 3 teams were evicted after a fight on Sat. night. Holy Cow! How do you get evicted from Disney? A fight between two Hawaian teams and one from Baltimore.
Sent on there way at 3 in the morning!
That's lovely, just lovely.
This made the national news, and of course according to the teams Disney was wrong for throwing them out:sad2: This is waht is wrong with the world today (OK, sorry - off the soap box now)
Like this picture you're about to see. We came into World Showcase from the Mexico end, and just enjoyed looking at all the sights , when one of the sights was this.

Disney should have to warn you about pop warner when you book! The cm's would have gotten sick of hearing from me if I had to deal with it!:) We stayed at asmu in may and loved it. It's too bad you had to deal with all of that.

I have heard nightmare stories of Pop Warner week.
If you have to go during that time and stay at values - I have heard that they don't use POP. Not sure if that is true or not though....
Anyways....
We saw the bridge open too! They open it to move the barges out for Illuminations! :thumbsup2

Nebo I'm new to the DIS Boards but not new to Disney. I absolutley have roared at your posts. Keep them coming. I just hate it when groups go places and don't control the kids. No one wants to tell kids no anymore. My husband and I are always good for telling kids to behave. Can you tell we are teachers?
Can't wait to read more. :cheer2:

So since we all know now why the rooms were so cheap, i wonder if they'll go down lower after all that?? Nebo would you go for $28 a night????
It's DISNEY. Just buy some earplugs and learn sign language. I'll bring Braeton to meet you and he can give you a crash course. What he doesn't know , he makes his own signs which can be PRETTY interesting!!!
Now I know why a 5 year old did not create sign language!!!!!!:rotfl:

I heard those stores about All Star and Pop Warner. So sorry you had to deal with that. I went to Disney for Grad Night when I was in high school and we were so well behaved. Those chaperones were not doing their job. oh boy!
I never saw that bridge open up, but I did see some people fishing once over by france. thought that was different.
Keep up the great reporting... :thumbsup2

I have that effect on women.
Not all of them.
it's such a shame, because usually the Values are great! last time we were at AsMu I loved it. sure, we prefer the moderates, but if you need a disney fix and it's the only affordable option......

Nebo, I can't imagine how miserable that was! Good for you Diane!:thumbsup2
I have been a complete saint this far.
This I am having trouble believing
"Big Blowout Sale" "All Disney merchandise half off!" "Last Week!"
Are you kidding me:lmao:
You wouldn't believe how long this took.
Actually I can believe that, Disney needs to invest in a training program!

But our resort was just mobbed, it seemed to me. And mobbed with youngsters and a google amount of teenagers.
And all running and yelling every which way.
OH no, I know what's coming:scared1:
There is this little thing going on there called Pop Warner, and football teams of all ages converge on Disney World.
Yep, I will never go during Pop Warner:eek:
Once we settled in, I ran over to the pool area for a shot.
No, not that kind of shot, this kind of shot:
But I am sure you would have loved that kind of shot;)
And got waved right through.

I'm sure you get my drift.

There's one good reason I shouldn't complain about having to go home at night and not staying at a hotel. But I'm sure you didn't let it ruin the rest of your trip. pixiedust: Waiting to hear the rest of the story.
Hi, I'm going to try to hit some call outs now, but I'm going to have to leave some out, very sorry but I'm hoping to get another chapter up and running either later tonight or tomorrow. Everyone, thanks for posting and reading, like I said, this trip report is full steam ahead!
Janet and Emily, I like how you break it down and add your comments in it. I know that takes a lot of time. okay,,,,,
We had no problems with kids or noise when we stayed there over Spring Break.
SB, we never did before either, this was a first for us, and hopefully a last.
Thanks CJ's mom, did you switch resorts to get away from them, or did you just have one night planned anyway, I know, I need to get over to your thread. We did cut through sports a couple times at night, and while it didn't seem as bad as music, I noticed the same thing going on over there.
Lurker coming out of hiding to let you know that the bridge is opened every night that Illuminations is done. It lets through boats with Illuminations "stuff". I only know this because I got stuck waiting for it once and asked the CM who was guarding the gate. Overall it is a relatively quick process though.
Welcome Quacktatty! I cannot believe we've never seen this before with the bridge, it must be because our usual schedule has us back at the room during this time, and we don't get back to WS until night.
Thank you HaleyB, and keep refraining, although my eyes still have to check out the weather in Orlando everyday in the paper. By the way, I have two fastpasses in my nightstand, does that answer your question?:rolleyes1
Leah, I wish him luck, all doctors are different. And by the way, I would be thrilled to get to spend a day at the park with Braeton!
Disney should have to warn you about pop warner when you book! The cm's would have gotten sick of hearing from me if I had to deal with it!:) We stayed at asmu in may and loved it. It's too bad you had to deal with all of that.

Ahem, regular Sunny D is orange, so vodka or a light rum both work well. (And a combination thereof). There now is a fruit punch type, but we found those were the ones that were left over at the end of the trip. Just make sure you the 11.3 oz bottles with the pop up top. I also buy these disposable large cups at the grocery store, that are a kind of styrofoam/paper patterned materiial with lids that work even better. The outside of the cup is actually kind of fuzzy, but you won't feel it through the packaging. But these cups have retained ice for almost 2 hours, and we'll make drinks in the room and bring them with to the parks. You just can't go on any rides with them till they are done.
So, I bit the bullet and booked WL room only for Dec. 14-18. Please tell me Pop Warner is over by then; I know they won't be at WL, but I don't even want to run into those groups in the parks!
