I have been trying in vain to get one of these for my son's 18th Birthday in January.
It must be the 60gb so he can play his PS2 games on it.
Can anyone advise or help with any web sites where this might be available at a decent price?
We have had ranges from £319 to £430. Too big a range really.
Everywhere is sold out at the moment unless someone can advise me otherwise. Many thanks.

Sorry Sue, I've just checked with one of our stock managers and we haven't got any in :confused3 (I work for a high street store - the one where you can ring and reserve! ). Apparantly we aren't getting anymore either as it wasn't as popular as Sony thought it was going to be.
Have you tried ebay?

They wont be making anymore 60gb Ps3's so I have heard thats why you see many 40gb.
We got ours from Argos in Nov with 2 games for £350.
I agree with the link above, register and see if you can get hold of one.
I have to say they are a fantastic piece of equipment the graphics are very cool! even to me who's not interested in consoles.

Sony have ceased making the 60GB to make way for the 80GB version, although I think this is a backward step due to the 40GB not being able to play PS2 games & the 80GB apparently only play selected PS2 games.
The 60GB was selling for £350 so anything around or below that price is a good deal.
I was told the only place to get it now is from the states , there is a new bigger one coming out around April
DS got the 40gb from santa and still has his PS2 set up aswell, some how don't think it is going to get much use from now on
he loves the PS3
Do you have a HD TV ?

They are selling for very high prices on ebay - £500-£600 plus! I did see someone selling a replacement 60gb hard drive (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PS3-Playstation-3-Hard-Drive-60Gb_W0QQitemZ200185735863QQihZ010QQcategoryZ14949 2QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) to use in any psp - would that solve your problem?

Hopefully it will play all his PS2 games.

I have read lots of reports too that we are not getting the 80 Gb version so I think if he wants one for his birthday it will have to be the 40 Gb one. The PS3 is a fantastic bit of kit and he will notice a massive difference between that and the PS2. Even if the 80 Gb is released over here, whether the compatibility chip is included is another question.
In my experience once kids get used to playing a new console with the updated graphics they don't usually go back to playing games with inferior graphics. Your eyes get used to the new standards which make the older games look worse. So I wouldn't worry too much about backwards compatibility, he can always hook up his PS2 if he isn't getting rid of it and play his older games.
The 60 Gb went on special offer back in October (I think) when there was a price drop and a bundle deal for £349. Stocks started to fly out of the shops at this time. Shops started to push the 40 Gb which was at a more affordable price bringing it to compete against the XBox 360 elite price range.
I got one for Christmas and would strongly recommend your son gets one, he will love it. The games are simply stunning and the difference in blu ray films is amazing.

You made a great choice in buying the ps3 Scotishsue.
Not only are these systems fantastic for there out standing graphics but the blue ray player is a god send.
My partner no longer uses the dvd player anymore, he is now buying everything on blue ray, the picture quality on a hdtv is outstanding.

dont get too worked up about blueray. As in a few years we will be having HD films via internet WiMax(reason for annalog turn off)and games
they will be streamed live via box under TV no cables using local wifi,or record them to your hard drive
this future technology is why firms whant there box under the tv,lots of money involved

But unfortunetly paulh we will hav to wait, like u said a few years. for now bluray films r a nice step in the quality of picture, also it slightly upscales(improves) the picture of existing dvd's. Not the standard of blurays, but on newer releases you can def see the diff in HD anyway.
Just got my HDTV to go with my ps3 Christmas present, wow it's so so good.
As for which ps3, i'm pretty sure the 80gb won't be backwards compatable, and will basically be the 40gb one with a bigger hard drive (aka no ps2 games, only 2 usb ports, no card reader etc).
Glad my missus located a 60gb one before they became like gold dust
