Tipping with 6 people but 2 won't order?

Just wondering if anyone knew what the exact rules are. We have 6 in our family but 2 (since they are 8 mo and 2 yrs old) won't be ordering food or drink.. Will we still be required to pay the 18% tip even though they will only be servicing 4 of us??

Yes, I'm pretty sure you will have to.

It will be 18% of 4 meals, not 6. So the bill will look as though there were only th 4 older customers, and the tip will be based on that.

Tip is based on the amount of food eaten not by the number of people at your table.

Dont make reservations for a party of 6 make it for 5 and once there ask for a high chair for 8 month old.

Make reservations for the amount of people you have. Tip as you usually do at any restaurant.... 18% based on the amount of the bill. Since the 2 youngins won't be ordering, there won't be anything to tip on for them.

I believe the OP is asking if the 18% automatic tip for parties of 6 or more apply to his family.

I'm pretty sure guests not ordering food count but I'm not positive if guests who eat free count.

It's not a big issue. You should be budgeting for good service and planning on tipping around 18%, even if an automatic tip isn't added. Just check your bill so you don't wind up tipping twice. It's possible some restaurants will use a count of 6 and some won't.

Yes the tip will be added to a party of 6. They don't care if all 6 eat or not. We are always a party of 8 (when the rule is automatic for a party of 8). It never mattered that 1 was 3 months old and 1 was 2 years old, the tip was automatic for a PARTY of 8. Even if you book a party of 5, when they seat you and you become a party of 6, your tip will be automatic. There is no way to get around it unless you book 2 separate tables and pay separately and sit separately.

Children under 3 count toward party size, so the automatic gratuity will be added for your party.

When were were at Artist Point (mumble mumble) years ago, our two year old Nathan was the hit of the party... he didn't eat any of their food, but a good amount of the food we gave him unfortunately ended up in a ring around his high-chair. The server was wonderfully gracious about the whole thing.

"Worth it" is very subjective, of course, and that is the problem. In today's economy, a discretionary payment system is in some cases no longer going to work. As much as I'd like to see gratuities remain discretionary, the more trouble there is with service value provided matched by gratuities granted the more we'll see automatic gratuities and such.

But you won't be tipping for them...just 18% of what the four adults consume.

And as Bicker implied, the server will still be accommodating your little ones even though you don't order separately for them.

If you are on the DDP just plan for 18% tips...it looks like it will happen for your party.
I understand what you mean by the 18% automatic gratuity. It Bugs me too. But when I eat out local and we usually end up with the automatic gratuity being added. When it happens we just pay what they bill and nothing more.
If the server is horrible ask for a manager (you should do this even if you are not automatically charged gratuity) and ask for the tip to be removed and the wait staff delt with.
Im sure you will have lovely and accomodating waitresses and the 18% will be worth it :) Like PP said the 2 yr old and 8 month old will not add to your tab.
So if you are doing an 18.99/10.99 buffet character meal your total bill would be 59.96. Im not sure what tax in theWorld is on food and if beverages are extra so will will round that to $65 (assuming drinks are included) 18% is 11.70 so you total would be $76.70. Now if it was just a party of the four eating most people would probably just round it to $75 for ease for budgeting the check book. Your would only save $1.70 so is it really worth the trouble? ( Heck it took me five minutes just to figure out the tip I would pay the extra $1.70 for someone else to do it.


We are on the DDP and since i have ADR's for all Buffet meals I plan to figure out my tips and envelope them in advance. I will print Envelopes that say "Thank you for your Service" and leave one on the table at each TS meal. I dont plan to carry any other cash with my while at the parks.
