I got excited when I saw the huge NYE 2008 thread until I realized it was for the Magic. :guilty:
So- anyone out there doing the 4 day Wonder for New Year's Eve 2008/2009?
Somebody must be on the ship!
Just over a year from now, we will be headed to MCO to begin our first ever cruise. We have 2 cat 6 connecting rooms. Can't wait to sit out on the veranda.
DH & I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary. And our 2 sons will be celebrating their 18th & 21st birthdays.
We will follow the cruise with a 4 night stay at AKLV (or VWL if we can't get in).
So- this is who is going to be onboard with us!

Wow! No one, huh?
I guess if we are going to be the only ones on the ship, we may get upgraded to the Walt Disney Suite! That will be fine by me. :goodvibes

We booked this onboard our Wonder cruise Dec 30, 2007 and unless things change will be joining you. It will be my husband and myself and our sons-19 and 12, and probably a friend for the older son, along with my parents.

:thumbsup2: That's great! Hope to see you on board.
How was New Year's Eve this past time? I am hungry for info about the NY celebration.
Was the ship sold out? I was under the impression that this was a popular sailing. I am surprised there haven't been any others checking in yet for 2008/09.
I can't wait to see who else is cruising with us!

We will be there from Mass! DH 45 Me 44 DS 21! DS 16 DS 13 and DD just 12. I hope there are other 12 old girls out there because I do not want her hanging with the teens. Anyone coming with a 11-12 daughter. I am so looking forward to this trip.:goodvibes

I am also curious about the New Year Eve celebration. Do you think it will be dressier or not. How about the weather. Will it be warm enough to get any sun. I am dying to go already!! We are staying at AKL 2bedroom Conc. for 4 nights prior to the cruise. Our first time as DVCers. Anyone else?

Oh--I'm jealous of the AKL concierge--thy are great! You must have been on the phone fist thing!!
The cruise this past new year's was sold out, but did not seem it overly crowded.
For NYE a lot of people were dressed up like for formal night. They had a special menu in the restaurants. When you got back to your room each room had a NYE litho and candy. Hats and noise makers were given out and champagne in plastic souvenier glasses at midnight--the countdown was out on the jumbotron.
The weather was great up until the last day at sea--40 mile an hr winds with a high of about 45 degrees--it was awful!!
Not many people on our thread last year this far out.
Glad to see so many college age kids.
Terrif

Thanks for the information. We booked the December trip because all of our kids will be out of school and older one on college break but I am a little worried about the weather. It's good to know that some days were nice. We booked last March on our first 3 day cruise.(Took younger ones out of school for that-too stressful to make up work). It is great to know already that my older son will have someone to hang out with. He was 19 last time and just too old to be in the teen club and not quite old enough for anything else.
And yes I was on the phone first thing to get AKL concierge-I was home sicK with a fever! Sounds like NYE will be fun.

The previous year we did a 4 night leaving Dec 26h. Two nice days and 2 days in the high 60s, so the weather can be hit or miss--just keep hoping for the best!

We are staying at AKL 2bedroom Conc. for 4 nights prior to the cruise. Our first time as DVCers. Anyone else?
I am so jealous!!
The AKV 2 bedroom concierge is exactly what we are hoping for- but it's unlikely we will get it.
I do have our ressies for VWL- 2 bedroom.
And I have the calendar marked to call at 7 months for the AKV concierge. However, I do not have my hopes up too high, since there are only 3 of these units with a savanna view and 2 standard view!! Slim pickings!
I am also glad to see more of the college kids! And lots of boys too!
DS21 is all about sports. He will likely be glued to the Diversions TVs watching bowl games. And when he is not, he hopes the basketball court is available! The other thing he enjoys is fine dining- so we are hoping to get Palo at least one time.
DS18 will be a freshman in college. He is a photography major- so expect to see him with his ever present camera!
I had also heard that NYE is a bit more formal. We are leaning toward renting tuxes from DCL. But I have to see if that's really necessary. I am leaning that way because I think it beats packing dressier clothes they would only wear once. That's a whole suitcase of pants, shirts, ties, jackets and shoes for my 3 men!
We will be packing enough as it is- to be prepared for a wide variety of weather possibilities.
Also- for some of the meets threads, I notice that the first post keeps an updated list of who's on board. I'd like to do that if it's OK with everyone.
Can we list family members and ages, where you are from and which dinner seating you have?
So for us, I would put:
wdwscout- Linda (53)
DH- John (51)
DS- Brian (21)
DS- Nicholas (18)
from New Jersey

What do you think?

Good luck WDWscout with trying to get concierge at 7 months out- you never know until you try. We have never stayed at AKL but are looking forward to it. Is Jiko worth trying? We have been to BOMA breakfast buffet and really enjoyed that. Keep the info coming about New years celebration. It is wet and dreary in Mass and the thought of cruising next december is great!:woohoo:

We haven't tried Jiko yet either, but have eaten several breakfasts and dinners at Boma. They are among our favorite WDW meals!
I hear you about the weather- the temps dropped 30 degrees today and I can hear the wind howling outside right now. Keeping the thought of our cruise in my mind everyday!

Is there any must do excursions? Last time we were so tired from running around the parks that we chose to hang on the boat mostly. The kids were going to do the bananna boat ride but it was canceled due to the winds. Also does anyone know if there is an extra day at sea on the 4 day cruise and which day it is on?

My DH and I booked late summer, but we have yet to announce our plans to DD's (will be 14 and 11 at cruise time). We want this to be a surprise. We are staying on land for 4 nights prior to cruise (also a surprise!). This will be our 1st Disney cruise, but our 2nd cruise overall. Last summer we cruised to Alaska and loved it!! Now we are hooked! So we thought we would try it the Disney way! We would love to hear from others booked on same cruise!:goodvibes :thumbsup2

This is our first cruise- and we are VERY excited! :cool1:

Hi all. One more for the NYE cruise. Cruising on this fun little boat trip (cue Gilligan music) will be me, Sam (31), and...um...no one else. Just me. (Yeah. I'm one of those.) I'll be going on this cruise to celebrate not much of anything other than not having to go to work for a few days. Reason enough, right? Anyway, I'm also from Massachusetts (Greetings, fellow Mass people!) and have second seating. Let the countdown begin!

We are going on this cruise. It will be the second Disney cruise for my daughter and me and the first for DH. She and I were on Magic in January 2008 on a 7-day and LOVED it. Decided to do a 4-day with Daddy just in case he doesn't love it as much as we do. I know, how can somebody not love Disney and not love cruises, but there is a strong chance with him that he won't! He's not a huge Disney fan and he's a sailor (65 ft. MacGregor) and thinks cruising is just not the same as being on a sailboat. Well, it's not, but it's MORE fun in my opinion!

I hope someone with a 12 yr old boy signs up--my son never seems to meet anyone-when he goes to the clubs most people seem to have friends travelling with them.

Yes, NYE is a great on the ship, at least it was on the Magic! We're hoping it's the same on the Wonder. There was a great party on Deck with a live band. They did the count down and passed out Champagne for adults and Sparkling Cider for the kids in commemorative glasses. Disney does a wonderful job with making sure everyone has a great time!! We loved it because we could celebrate with our kids! party:

Welcome aboard alexedan!
You have the biggest group thus far.
You have been added to Post #1 in this thread.
This is my first cruise, so I am not completely sure about the dining rotations- but from what I have learned so far, you should be assigned to the early seating time around 6:00. I think they stagger the each rotation, so that half of the ship is not arriving at the same time, but I believe for the early times, you are seated at 5:45, 6:00 or 6:15. Your room key will indicate the time and which restaurants you will eat at on which night.

For those of us on our first cruise- our date for planning excursions, etc. is coming up soon.
We are thinking of doing the walking/bus tour of Nassau (but still debating if we want to strike out on our own?). I still can't figure out what time it would start- and being on New Year's Day, I'll bet we won't want to be up at the crack of dawn. ;)
Not decided yet about Castaway Cay activities- probably parasailing.

Yup, excursions all set for me. My schedule looks something like this:
Nassau: Nassau Segway tour
Sea day: Palo brunch
Castaway Cay: Walking/Kayak tour, cabana massage, parasailing, Palo dinner
I'm open to a fish extender exchange if anyone else wants to... (Crud! Does this mean I have to make a fish extender? Can I just hang a plastic Walmart bag from the fish instead? :teeth:)

We did not choose anything for Nassau- we will do our own walking tour- weather permitting- and if we all are in the mood. ;) We at least want to step off the ship and say we were there!
For Castaway Cay- we are parasailing (first time for all of us). and hanging out at the adult beach.
I can go either way on the Fish Extender. If we do it- we should have participation from a good number of families. And yes- from what I have read here on the Boards- you could hang just about anything out there!

I didn't even know they had a brunch on a four day cruise. I had trouble getting my computer to allow me to book for palo so maybe brunch was already booked. Do you think they will still have spots available if you sign up the day of the sailing? I can't believe it is so close now.

I see availability now if you want to try. (Though it only shows me availability for parties of 1-2 people since I'm sailing alone.) It's showing availability for 10:30am only. Not sure how long that'll last...

It sounds like we will all be newbies at this! Which, in itself, may be FUN. :)
From what I have read here on the DIS- we would all bring "gifts" to distribute to all the rooms in our group. Rooms/families can opt in or out of the exchange group.
They are generally small, inexpensive items. They could be Disney related, cruise/Caribbean themed, or be something that represents your home town or state. You can tailor them to the ages of the recipients- or make them all the same.
The "Fish Extender" itself can be a multi-pocketed, personalized fabric piece of art- or a simple plastic or canvas tote bag! I have seen many recommendations to use a plastic zip tie to secure it to the wall hangar- for added security.
It seems like some people have a different gift to distribute for each night of the cruise- and others just bring one for the whole trip.
Knowing the ages & genders of all our kids (and many of the adults too!) may help people customize some gifts (if they choose to get that detailed).
I have really enjoyed reading over all the ideas and possibilities on the boards. Some of the things people have done are way over the top in creativity and time/work required to prepare. Some are simple items you can get at a party store, etc. And there's everything in between. I have read about candy, pens, photo albums, beach safes, pirate items, and much, much more.
In addition to the link Mark posted above, here is another Fish Extender thread with a lot of good tips and ideas.

So, I guess to get started- we just need to know who wants to participate (and who does not). And room numbers.
If you want to be in the Fish Extender Group- post here and I will add that fact and your room number to Post #1. If there is additional info about your family (names & ages, for example) that you want to add- post that too, and I will update our Post #1.
I will put FE in Green next to your family's name if you want to be included.

Will we bring a gift a day?
If you want. Or it could be only one, if you prefer. We can let that be up to individuals I suppose.
I think we will bring one gift for each day for each person (or perhaps per family, depending on what I come up with!)
With only a 4 night cruise- that seems reasonable to me. But, now I have to think of 4 different things to bring!
Any idea where to get the extender? I am not crafty enough to make one
ebay for sure.
But i have also seen photos of just hanging a tote bag or something similar out there.
Beth- did you want me to add you to the participating families?

OK- I have a question for everyone...
what are you wearing for New Year's Eve? :confused3
I understand that the Wonder does not have a formal night.
But I have also heard that New Year's Eve is considered "formal" anyway.
Is anyone dressing up for NYE? Tuxes or suits? Cocktail dresses or gowns?
Or just the usual dinner dress code?
My youngest son just bought his first suit- so he plans to wear it at least once (we are going to Palo one night also).
But DH and DS#1 may need to beef up their wardrobe if we go dressy. (They need to do it anyway- this is just a reason to do it now instead of later ;) )
What does everyone have planned?

We just got changed to main dining. Add us to the fish extender list-we are in
6511-Joe and Betty(my parents)
6510-Blake and Katie-my son and his girlfriend
6512-Beth, Sean and Brandon(12)

Hi Beth. I added your info to Post #1 for the Fish Extender.
Right now there are 10 families listed on the cruise.
SIX have said they want to be a part of the exchange. I have PM'd the other 4 families to see if they are interested.
At the moment, we have 9 staterooms involved with our 6 families.
There are 26 people in all:
15 adults
4 "kids" over 18 (18, 19, 19, 21)
1 teen (14)
2 "tweens" (11, 12)
4 kids (5, 6, 7, 8)
1 dog (Shadow)
If all of the others join in that will add up to 19 more people (11 adults, 1 "Kid over 18", 2 teens, 1 tween and 4 children) in possibly 7 more staterooms)
I am a total newbie at this. From what I have read on other threads about the Fish Extenders, everyone can do whatever they are most comfortable with. The list on Post #1 will help people decide if they want to do a gift per room or gifts for each person. Names and ages are there if you want to personalize items. Give a gift once on the cruise, or every day!
This is not supposed to be more complicated or expensive than the cruise itself!!! But do what you can or want to- be creative (there are TONS of great ideas on the boards here). Bring something that represents the cruise, where you are from, Disney or something entirely different!
Anyone have any ideas?

Oops - my bad - that was last year - we ARE on the WONDER with you guys this year. My 2 cents on FE - this summer on Mexican Riviera Cruise we had about 16 cabins and did something every day - i had to bring an extra suitcase and it wound up happening each night wayyyy late. It also takes a while(although good exercise after dinner)to hand everything out - it was fun the first few days, but then not so much after that. On the cruise before that we just did it one day - comparing the 2, that was more fun. There will be sooo much to cram into 4 days on this cruise, it might be easier to do one day - especially if we wind up with 19 cabins.
Just my thoughts.

11-28-2008, 05:34 PM
Lisa- glad to hear you actually are on the Wonder!
I will add you to post #1 on the first page.
I was thinking having gifts for every night on a 7 night cruise- and lots of participants- would be overwhelming! I believe we are letting everyone decide for themselves how they want to approach this. (Is that a good idea? or should we have a "rule"?)
I think we will have to come up with a cut off for adding more people to the fish extender- maybe in another week- Dec 5th sound OK?
LisaTex
11-29-2008, 12:09 PM
I think it's fine to leave it up to each person. A cut-off is good too.
Anyone at WDW before the cruise?
BethA
11-29-2008, 04:49 PM
We are at WDW at the VWL for 2 days before.
I think we should limit it to 1 or2 nights- the last night is too hectic and with the first night being NY eve, do you really want to run all over the ship?
Is everyone doing something for each person in the cabin, or just for the cabin as a whole? I am not crafty or creative, so I will be stressing over what to get.
LisaTex
11-30-2008, 07:00 AM
Hi BethA we will be at BWI for a few days before - how are you guys getting to the port?
You are so right - the first day always seems quite hectic anyway - so maybe the middle 2 days would be best. I don't "create" anything - although we have received many cool creative things - will probably just do something for adults and something for kids - guess it all depends on the final tally of rooms.

"Kids" (18-21) = 4
Teens = 1
Tweens = 2

I just looked at DCL at our ressie to see if they moved our plans and it still shows Nassau on 1/1/09.
But you know- I have been wondering, and asking, about New Year's Day since we booked this cruise back in 2007!
We kind of figured we'd stay on board since it was New Year's and a holiday.
Also, if they move our "at sea" day to Saturday, we may end up with 2 Palo ressies (brunch and dinner) on the same day!?!?
I wonder how much juggling of the reservations we have all made is up to us, or done for us? It has the potential to be quite a mess!

I like having the sea day last, usually because it gives you time to pack and relax, but last year it was freezing! You couldn't even go outside and the seas were very rough! The day at Castaway was nice and so was Nassau. The previous year we also had to cooler days--I'm hoping for better weather this year!!

Hi! I am new to the boards, but definitely not new to Disney or Disney cruising. We've been fans of WDW since 1990 and became DVC members in 2001. This will be our fifth Disney cruise and I wanted to reply because I have a son who will be almost 12 by cruise time and he also struggles to meet friends. His name is Kyle, so maybe we could try to hook them up at some point and see how it goes. He enjoys video gaming in the Lab so maybe they could hang there. We are sure getting excited about our upcoming cruise! Take care, Michele from Missouri

Brandon would be happy to meet up with someone. You can pm me about a place, or I can send you his cell phone number-he'll have it on the first day-do you have early or late dinner?
Beth,
We have late dining. We could arrange a meeting at the Oceanear's lab on Wednesday? I'm sure Kyle will want to check out the Wii there. ;o) I'm brand new to the Dis boards so I'm not sure how to PM. Sorry.

mid 70s sounds great!!
Is everyone dressing up for New Year's Eve?
I can't believe it's getting so close!!

for the weather, mid 70s sounds wonderful about now! DH and I just finished chopping 3 in. thick ice off driveway from storm last night!!! We usually get snow, not so much ice!!! We just kept saying to each other warmer weather is in our near future!!!:rotfl:

We lucked out with just rain.
Hopefully tomorrow will be kind as well- DS#1 is flying home tomorrow morning. (fingers crossed)
Can't wait for the warmer weather!!
On New Year's Eve, we are "sort of" dressing up. No tuxes. But one son will wear his suit, DH and the other son will wear jackets and ties. I have black chiffon pants and a beaded top. I wanted to try and coordinate our outfits for a nice family photo- but we will just go with what we have in our closets.
Makes for easier packing!
11 more days! :yay:

Hello everyone! Well we finally received our docs - and our room # - 6148.
We leave in 1 week for WDW - can't believe Christmas is just a few days away!!
Talk about weather - we had snow last week (which actually stuck!) - yes in Austin TX. But alas, today it is 85 degrees.
We will be dressing up - somewhat - you may recognize us by the put-out look on my tomboy niece's face - due to her having to wear her girly dress;)
If anyone has any last minute questions - just ask - we are quite the veteran Disney cruisers. Oh, you should not have to fill out any forms at the port.
Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays

Our TA told us we'd have to do the Bahamas form at the port-that they no longer send them.
I read on another post that the cruise after us will be getting their fuel surcharge back as an onboard credit. That would have been nice to have.

Thanks Lisa.
I've added your stateroom # to the list.
Also- I re-ordered the list to put all of the Fish Extender participants together. That should help us not miss any room numbers.
The only family who said they were participating, but have not yet given their room number, is WinMo. Pam- if you're reading this- let us know what stateroom you are in!!
LisaTex

OK - guess they changed the Bahama form thing - hoping to check in at the hotel before - remember you can do that if staying at certain Disney hotels - even if you are not using their transportation.

We had to take our youngest DD (11 yr) to ER yesterday. She may have broken her wrist near the growth plate!!! The doctor at the ER wasn't certain if it is a break or not, but referred us to an orthopedic doctor for Monday. Hopefully if it is broken, it can just be put into a cast, and we won't have to cancel any plans!!! The best scenario would be that her wrist is just badly bruised and not broken at all!! We are in a wait and see moment right now!!:confused3 Would DCL put any restrictions on her if she is in a cast??? (other than normal precautions)

pixiedust: Pixie Dust headed your way! pixiedust:
I hope she's not in too much pain.
If she does need a cast- ask about a waterproof liner and fiberglass cast. Some situations allow for that- and it would sure be nice to have on a cruise!(if it's appropriate for her)
If she needs a cast or not- have the doctor give you a note stating what she can or cannot do.
If she has no restrictions, then you can show it to the staff.

Good News!! My DD did not break her wrist, just a very bad sprain. She is not in a hard cast, just a velcro brace and pain meds:flower3: The doctor gave us the ok to continue with our plans!!! We are glad as we begin our land portion on Saturday!!:cool1: Thanks for the pixie dust WDW scout!

Our younger DD is our "graceful" one!! She is the one we have already made 3 trips to the ER! Our older DD, had a rough start (she was a premie), but is very healthy and cautious!!!
Tomorrow is the big reveal in our house!! I have prepared a special message to put into the girls stockings to let them know about the cruise. They think we are only going for the land portion of our vacation! So far, I truly do not think they know about the cruise...only 1 more day to keep the secret!:rolleyes1

Not sure when everyone is traveling, but have a safe trip and hope to meet you onboard.
We are leaving on Monday and I still don't even have the suit cases out or any idea what I'm taking--other than the FE gifts. Any word from WINMO on their room number?

No response from WinMO. I sent a PM too.
Not sure what to do there- I guess I'll bring their gifts, and if we don't hear from them- I'll just put them in someone else's FE!!:wizard:
I have small things to pass out- one for each of 3 nights. I figured with everyone packing on the last night- another gift wasn't necessary.
And I still have to make our FEs!! I have the fabric- just have to decide how to make them. (I've got 4 days- it'll happen!)
I just got our suitcases out this morning. We leave Tuesday morning. (4 more sleeps! )
My clothes are all spread out on my bed right now! Trying to figure out what to bring. I always have trouble packing for warm weather in the winter!!
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas- we'll be on the Wonder before you know it!

I remember a few posts back someone sharing that the itinerary had changed. I've checked our cruise details online several times since then and there is no change reflected there yet. I'm kind of concerned that we may be eating at Palo's twice on one day if our last day is truly going to be 'at sea' since that is also the day I had our evening reservation for dinner and it is the day of the brunch offering. I tried to change our Palo reservation but of course at this late date there are no openings except for the first night at 6:00 and 6:30 which I don't want. Do you think they will just shuffle the reservations for everything to the day's itinerary they were originally intended? for instance, I have a couple's massage for the Nassau day, so whatever day that is, would they switch it? I would think this would be a logistical nightmare for scheduling appointments. Any advice or wisdom from someone who has been on a cruise where they changed the itinerary would be greatly appreciated. I'm a worrier by nature so this has me concerned.

Last time my TA checked it was still the "regular" itinerary - but who knows?
Happy travels to you all - feel free to knock and say hi (although I hope we are not just hanging out in our cabin)
Last year it was mid 70's at CC. The water was pretty cold at first - but easy to get used to!

when our DD's found out the "secret" they were completely shocked! Our younger DD couldn't close her mouth after reading the secret message she found in her stocking. Our older DD (being a teenager) was excited and had to text her friends to let them know! Now on the trip, they keep asking what other surprises we have planned:confused3 Our response is "You never know what may happen next!" since they don't know we have a verandah on the cruise (our last cruise was an inside stateroom) I think they will remember this vacation for a long time!

Sorry to jump in and interrupt here. (Dad has been sick so I have had a little hiatus.) I was trying to catch up and am now freaking out because of the possible change in Nassau day. We have booked 3 rooms at Comfort Suites for the 1st thru 2nd. If the itinerary moves does anyone know if it will be a problem?:confused3 I know we are outside of the usual cancellation window. I figure we are maybe a very late arrival? (23 and 1/2 hrs late!) All we really want is the wristbands for Atlantis and signing priveleges.

While DCL still says our itinerary remains the same, paragd911, and now Passporter, are reporting the change. (Although, their 2 itineraries are not the same)
I expect we will find out once we board!
I don't know what happens with non-Disney reservations, but if I were you, I would get on the phone this morning and call the Comfort Inn and ask.
They may move you automatically with an itinerary change, but I would want to know for sure.
See you on board!

We are back! :sad1:
What a wonderful vacation! Our first cruise and we loved every minute of it!The boys enjoyed the cruise more than they expected.
New Year's Eve balloon drop was amazing. Palo exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed our servers, Castaway Cay, how close everything was on the ship- it was all spectacular. :cool1:
And 4 more nights at WDW to follow. We had great weather, yummy food and lots of fun! :thumbsup2
Thanks to everyone for the FE gifts! That was fun. I didn't think to package ours and write who they were from- so the loose things were from us! ;)
I enjoyed making the rounds and handing out the gifts.
I plan to piece together a trip report and post some photos online in the near future. Right now I have to help both kids get back to college, and get back to work myself. :sad1:
But... while we did not book our next cruise while on board- we are already planning to cruise again. Probably Dec 2010.
