I don't know if I mentioned it over here, but a few weeks back my lovebirds started laying eggs. They finally ended up with a clutch of 6. Last night, they started singing, so I went to take a look, and 2 of the eggs had hatched!

They had kicked one of the eggs out of the nest (it was infertile), but I may have 3 more on the way

This isn't mine, but here's what they look like at the moment...

When you see a newly hatched bird, you can see where they evolved from dinosaurs....:scared1:

OK, I can't exactly say the baby is cute, but then I also said my youngest looked like a monkey when she was born!
How does a bird tell that an egg is infertile? :confused3

How does a bird tell that an egg is infertile? :confused3

I guess when you sit on them all day, you can tell if anything is moving inside. I had to use the old "candleing" technique. Hold it up to a light so you can see if there's anything alive in it.

So what did you do to the infertile egg?

He went out with the morning trash, unfortunatly.

As for a Christmas present, I think mom, dad, and the kids need a new cage!! It will probably have to wait a few weeks though.

Here's a pic I just took of my actual babies. It's not great (Mama and Dad didn't like the camera and quickly jumped in my way LOL) but it shows them and their yet-to-hatch siblings.

Good luck with being a mama/papa birdie lover.......

How'er the babies, ConcK?

ConcKahuna
12-28-2007, 01:28 PM
They are getting bigger! All the eggs hatched, although I might have lost a baby. It's hard to tell, Mommie doesn't let me see them much anymore LOL

The 2 oldest are getting really big though, they are about half the size of the parents now!

Saxton

So Grandpa ConcK - do they have names yet? And when are we going to see more pictures of the little ones?

No names yet. I'll post pictures later today. I'm back down to 2 babies. The 2 oldest kind of squashed their little siblings and refused to let them eat.

My goodness -- that pic reminds me of looking at a foetal ultrasound -- I think I see a head, a wing, and I am not sure at all what the other thing is. :lmao: But I'm thinkin' if he's a boy-bird, nobody's gonna call him Tweety. :rolleyes1

Ok, in that pic the one is laying over the other. His head is in the center foreground, face down. The thing on the right is the other sibling's backside.

So I've named the babies. I named the oldest Hermes. He's always on the go, and refuses to settle into the nest and relax. Every few hours he jumps out and explores the cage, causing his parents to panic, then I have to put him back in. Since I picked a Greek diety for him, my DP decided to go Roman and name the other Venus.

Here's a pic of Hermes after his most recent exploration of the cage...

By the way I suck at getting my camera to focus on stuff that is close-up LOL

OMGosh, they must be so fun to watch. How lucky that you have a mated pair and they expanded the family. I love the pictures, they change so fast, too.

PS, Conch, does your camera have a micro setting, because to get that close up, you really need that setting.

Here's a picture of both Hermes and Venus..

And here are some pictures of Hermes comming out to play on the bed. He decided it would be fun to chase one of the cats away, you can see part of her in the background on the 2nd pic while he stopped to rest. Those tiny little legs don't run very fast!

They are very adorable.

Your cats don't try to eat your birds? I had a rather tramatic find when I was about 8yo and I've never wanted cats and birds together since then. :scared:

Actually, after an incident with my macaw when I first got him, all of the cats are now afraid of birds LOL

I love looking at birds, but I am afraid to hold them. My dad's parrott was not very nice to me when I was a kid.

Next clutch ;)

They are almost fully feathered now. A friend sent us a new cage for them (he owns pet stores) and while I was transferring everything over, Hermes fell out of the old cage. He managed to get his wings flapping and flew all the way over to the kitchen counter! I think he was as suprised as I was that he could fly already :rotfl2:

when we had cocketiels.......they were the cutest ugliest babies around......we thought (at that time) they looked like ET.....
Your babies are so darn cute and so are the mama and the papa.....
I asked dh for another bird and he got me another dalmatian instead......never could figure out how the birds pooped on the ceilings.......:confused3

Hope to see more photos of your clutch

we had to hand feed a few birds cause the mama and the papa got to nervous with them running around and stepped on a few babies....One we saved and we named him Waddles cause he could not fly ..only waddled.....
