I love the traditional carols but my favourite pop songs are:-
Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade
I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday - Wizzard (sadly I remember these two when they were new releases!)
White Christmas - Bing Crosby
Rockin' around the Christmas Tree - Don't know who sang this
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
I'm not so keen on sad Christmas songs (or as they're known in our family "songs to top yourself to" e.g Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas) and although I like Band Aid, I don't like it being played in restaurants - it seems rather inappropriate.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Pogues song is completely not in the spirit of Christmas? I absolutely hate it. It just smacks of everyone having a booze up instead of actually celebrating the true spirit of Christmas. Now I'll get down off my high-horse! ;)

No, you're not alone. I hate it as a Christmas song.

I know what you mean, fact is though that is what most young people do at Christmas, go out on booze up's every day - or what I used to do anyway!
Mind you we did do carol singing in pubs, 'Silent Night' etc - we used to run a mile when "Merry Christmas Everybody" came on....
I must admit in my opinion 'Fairytale Of New York' is one of the better Christmas songs in that it's very 'catchy' and you can listen to it each year without getting fed up of it.
I can't say the same for Slade and Mud for example.
The one thing I really don't like is you never hear from some artists all year then they bring out a Christmas album, one certain gentleman does it every year!
Some bands do it too one I have a few albums of now have a 'greatest hits', 'best of' and also 'umtimate collection' - all essentially the same I am afraid and the latter released at....Christmas, £££ kerching!
I do agree though that the likes of 'white christmas' are the true seasonal classics.
Maybe the real problem is nobody makes good Christmas songs anymore?
