We are going to WDW Jan 25 thru Feb 2, coming from Ohio where it's freezing that time of year. What type of clothing should we take? Shorts, tanks, tees or sweat shirts, jacket, coats?? I've looked at the weather sites and it seems like the temp can vary greatly...what would you suggest?
TIA!

Hi,
You'll need to pack a little of everything!
January weather is completely unopredictable. You could have warm days (80s) with cool mornings, or you could have mornings near freezing with afternoons in the 40s or 50s.Or you could have something in between, or a little of both.

After living in Florida, only 45 mins from Disney, for 13 years I still can't pin point the weather. But Jan. can get pretty cold.
Usually in florida winter mornings are COLD, but by the afternoon they warm up by 20-25 degrees! so you might want to bring a sweater that you can take off and isnt too big to carry around until night time, because night time gets coldest!
Good luck and have fun on your trip!

Glad that you asked! I was just planning on bringing a little of everything.;)

I plan to dress everyone in layers. I'm packing tees for the kids where they can put hoodies (and coats) over them if needed. The can take off whatever they don't need. DH and I will also dress in layers.
I'm bringing DD's stroller with the large basket to hold everything we won't need.
I'm also planning to go to the weather channel's website often the week before we leave.
I don't want to pack a ton of clothing but I have a feeling I will.

Will be there at the same time and am planning to bring plenty of sweatshirts and dress in layers. The average temp is about 68 (day) but it'll probably be fairly cold at night.

Well I am from PA and am also going that same timeframe and have actually been there the past few years during the same week. I pack as if it is spring/fall in PA. Capri jeans, sweatshirts and tees. A few shorts. Always a swimsuit since have been lucky to have a warm day or two. A fleece to carry around for early AM and evenings....need it for the EMH's. Tennis shoes and one pair of sandals.
The funny thing is I am always leaving behind the snow so a 60 degree day to me is shorts weather. And here's me in shorts in the parks with all the castmembers in coats and gloves.......you can definitely tell who is a tourist from the north in Florida during that time......LOL!
Like KatiebugsMom (I have a Katie to), we live in PA and go in Jan almost every year. We've had 80 degrees and 45 degrees. So we generally have a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts, a light jacket and at least one pair of pants besides the pair we wear down. And if we need more of any item be it shorts or jeans, we wash them. So far, it's worked out pretty good for us.

Thanks for the thread, we will be going Jan. 25-30 and I was wondering the same exact question. Katiebugsmom, LOL! I can relate, we are from the Chicago suburbs, and we get excited when it hits 40 degrees!

We usually go that time of year, as our anniversary is Jan 26th. As others have said weather can be really hit or miss. I have been there when the highs have been in the lower 80's and I have been there when the highs have been in the 40's, and then there is everything in between.
I get cold easy so usually I pack a few sweaters/sweatshirts, jeans and maybe 1 or 2 pairs of shorts, several t-shirts, for about a week (keep in mind I don't wear shorts unless the highs are in the upper 70's). Layering is also very important, always bring some kind of pullover, hoodie or jacket with you to the parks as even on warmer days it can get cooler at nights.
Definitly check weather.com maybe a few days before you leave to finnish up (or start like me!) your packing. If it looks like its going to be cold come prepared as one year I was happy when the highs were in the 40's I was happy I brought the gloves and a stocking hat!

Like many of the others we go this time every year. It depends on where you are from as how you pack. We are from NH-it is very cold when we leave and find it very warm when we get there!!! Last year we had a day of 87 degree weather and spent the day at Blizzard Beach!!! We have swam on every trip-it can be alittle cold when we get out of the pool-but we swim. We do dress in layers and maybe throw something extra into the backpack in case someone is really cold at night getting to the bus. But for a Northerner that doesn't LOVE the heat-we find the weather perfect!!!!

We are leaving 1/11 and plan on layering also. I also plan on bringing a scarf and gloves although not a winter coat. Gloves usually make me soooo much warmer and they're easy to throw in a handbag/backpack.
I also figure if I get REALLY cold I can buy myself a sweatshirt etc. If I HAVE to buy new clothes, oh well, I guess I will LOL

If you go to www.wunderground.com you can click on trip planner and punch in the city and the days you'll be there and it gives you the highs and lows and whatnot from the last 7 years or something. It's interesting. But it basically shows that each year seems to be different.
We'll be there January 24th-30th. I'm going to bring a couple pairs of jeans, one pair of shorts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, and maybe a tank top...but probably not. Although, anything above freezing will probably seem warm to us since we'll be coming from a midwest winter.

Our family is from Michigan. We were there Jan 2007. You are so right about it depending on where you live. We wore spring/fall clothing the entire trip. I wore capris and a light jacket over a short sleeve t and was never cold. We also went swimming and sat in the sun many afternoons. We found that not many people were out in the early mornings due to the "chilly weather"(leaving the parks to us cold climate folks). Last year I waited to do my final packing a week before we were to leave. That way I was able to watch the weather and make any adjustments accordingly. I did pack a few pair of shorts for everyone. I will do the same thing this year(we will be there Jan27-Feb2)

My dh and I go every year at the end of Jan and stay into Feb. We love the time frame however we are coming from the desert southwest so I tend to get colder quicker. LOL. We layer our clothes and I always have gloves with me. For some reason if you get cold and you keep your hands warm it helps. I know you midwest people already know that. LOL! We will be there in about 40 days. YEAH!!!!!

I've gone quite a few times in Jan/Feb & my parents only live 45 minutes away & you should definitely bring more than a sweater!
One trip, I had to buy a coat at DTD & gloves & I'm from NY. On my last trip in the first week of Feb, on some days it was actually colder in Fl than in NY. The high was 42! :scared1: When we left our room all the hotel room windows were covered in frost. Another trip in Jan I was swimming & tanning in 80 degree weather then by the end of the week, we were bundled up.
In Jan & Feb you really have to plan on anything. Bring tank tops, t-shirts, long sleeves, sweatshirts & a coat. I'd also bring gloves, & I'm not exaggerating. WDW wouldn't sell them at every spot in the parks if you didn't need them & they are expensive there!! I've bought one too many pairs.
I'll be there Jan 30 - Feb 6 & I'll have all the above including gloves.

Absolutely agree with the last poster. We were there mid-February last year and needed to buy hats and gloves for the P&P party where you're outside late at night. That said, my DD4 LOVES her Tinkerbell hat and mittens, so buying them at the park is not always a bad idea -- just an expensive one.
This year, we're bringing the gloves with us when we go Jan. 30- Feb. 5. :woohoo: :woohoo:

I always bring shorts and t-shirts, but also bring winter clothes just in case -- you never know!!

I just started packing for our honeymoon beginning 1/6. So far I plan to pack mainly jeans and cords and long sleeve shirts. Also plan on packing DF a pair or two of cargo shorts and me a pair of capris. Packing DF and I both a heavy jacket and a hoodie. Packing both of us some short sleeve tops as well. Hopefully that will cover all of our bases!

We were there is Jan 07 and are going back in Jan 08!
We had perfect weather in my personal opinion. We left for the parks around 9 am wearing shorts or jeans with t-shirts. Then we all had zip up sweatshirts on as well. By mid morning the sweatshirts went in the back packs where they stayed till around 7 at night.
I packed thin gloves & hats for everyone. Along with lots of stuff for layering. But we never needed it. From what I have read that doesn't mean we wont need it on our next trip.
You arrive the day we leave.... hope you have a great trip!

I will also be in the "world" in Jan. Being from Boston I feel like I can tolerate some cold weather. I will be adopting the layering method of attack. I just cannot wait to get to a place where the temperature will be above 40 degrees (well hopefully). I am also going to be sure to pack gloves, I agree that if I can keep my hands warm, the rest of me follows.

We will also be going end of Jan.. This is a great thread! I was also wondering how to dress and what we should pack. I'm going to wait until the last minute and watch the weather channel to make sure I get in everything I need..
I gotta make sure to pack a poncho, everyone I have talked to said to buy one before the trip.

I agree with KatiebugsMom, being a Canadian I've travelled the end of Jan., beginning of Feb. a few years - always have shorts on but always have layers to put on or remove. Enjoy doing the water parks seeing the the lifeguards bundled up!!

Definately agree with everyone, it's very unpredictable. When we went at the end of last feb it was the tail end of a big frost and for our first night we wore the jackets we brought with us to wear in the airport, and we live in New England! By the end of the week we went from winter jackets to shorts and sandals. I'd expect Jan to be colder, I'd reccomend jeans more than anything, we wore long pants alot ourselves.

We're from Columbus and are gonna be there Jan 22 through Feb 2. I was wondering the same thing about packing, but I figured out by looking at the history on wunderground.com that the average is irrelevant because there will be days in the 70's and some with highs maybe only in the 50's. So, as everyone has said, looks like an extra suitcase to carry the variety of clothes!
TIA!

My family & I have visited DisneyWorld in mid January for the last 4 years. Every year is different. Usually we miss out on the Mid 80's weather and get High 70's and under. But there have been weeks in Jan. that are in the 80s.
Things I will bring this year:
Gloves
Rain Coat
Winter Coat w/zip out liner ( have to wear from Chicago anyway)
Capris
Shorts
Long Sleeve
Short Sleeve
1 Sleeveless Shirt
Jeans
Tennis Shoes
Pool Shoes (Pools are 80 degrees year round)
Sandels
Sweatshirt
It's possible I could use all of the above in two days.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info everyone. We're going on Jan 26. I'm soooo excited. I'm new to this site and it's awesome. We've been several times around this time of year and layers are the way to go.
Everyone enjoy their trip!!!!!

Hey there. I would pack a mix of everything. Seriously. lol. Like someone mentioned before, your weather will be completely unpredictable. Usually it will be warmer afternoons with cool mornings and nights. I would pack a mix of Tanks, Tees, Jeans, Capri Pants, Long Sleeved Shirts (cotton, nothing heavier!), sweat shirts, socks and shoes. Throw bathingsuits in, just to be safe. And of course, check www.weather.com 10days before your trip for *hopefully* accurate weather! Good luck and have fun!

Better safe than sorry, who knows these days with this weather we've been having:upsidedow
We are leaving in 11 days and I have decided to bring pants (we never wear shorts to theme parks) short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts (for layering) and fleece pull overs, hats, gloves and jackets. We probably won't need the jackets as our fleece pull overs are very warm but you never know:confused3
I am really hopeing for great cool weather but I have a feeling it will get pretty hot in the day;)

having been to Florida the past 5 Januarys you need to be prepared for everything....90's, 50's raining. Last year we had our winter coats and mittens on but one day we also went swimming. This is why we always pack so much for our January trips because we pack all types of clothing.

I am going Jan 30-Feb 5. I am originally from NY and I live in MA now, so I know from cold. It has been so bad up here that I think 60 would be shorts and tank top weather!
I have this really great sweatshirt from work that is thermal lined, so I think that will be a perfect layering piece.
I am going to pack:
2 pairs of jeans
1 skirt
1 pair of capri pants
tee shirts, tee shirts, tee shirts
a few long sleeved button down shirts
a few tanks to go under said button downs
pjs (of course!)
my Converse sneakers, my Crocs, and my sandals (you never know!)
a pair of gloves
a scarf
my awesome sweatshirt
and I will definitely wear my winter coat on the way to Logan Airport
A suggestion to those who can't deal with cold weather:
buy a pair of pants one size too big for you and buy leggings or long john style pants to go under them. If the pants are baggy then you don't look too bulky and they keep your legs super warm.

We are going January 24-February 2. Last year, we went in January and at the beginning of our trip, we had weather that was very hot (for January) and by the middle to end of our trip it was rainy and about 40 degrees. We definitely needed warm clothes and clothes for hot weather.
The year before, we went it January and it was more consistent. We wore jeans every day with a short sleeve T and jacket in the morning and removed the jacket by afternoon.
What weather info do you look at before you go? Weather channel, NOAA or something else?

Great Thread! We are also going Jan 26- Feb 3! I was going to just bring T's and shorts and tempt the vacation gods, but with the kids I guess layers are the way to go.
From what I'm reading, it isn't just an issue of the tempature changing a lot year to year. You can have really cold temps in the AM, warm in the afternoon, then really cold again at night.
As long as I'm on vacation with my family, it could snow and I wouldn't care.
Uh-Oh, now I probably DID anger the vacation gods!!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:
