What shots look the best to you for character/kids shots?
Is a full length, head to toe, shot best, or is a closer
portrait look nice.

I personally prefer the closer ones - get the faces better plus keep out most of the "junk" you get when you try to get a full length pose - other people, busy backgrounds, etc. But, if you are doing a character greeting with a nice background, the full length ones are nice too.

I usually shoot both, I get a full length shot then zoom in for the closeup, if for some reason I can't get the second shot I know that I can always crop the full length shot..
it's best to always shoot a little wider, that way you can always crop things out, but you can never add in missing body parts if you accidentaly cut something off
