Dear Spin,
You appear to be younger than several of us who are travelling, but are you young enough to have had "Everyday Math?" Your reply sound SO much like something my 8 yo would come up with! :rotfl2:
Do any of the other parents here have as much trouble with Everyday Math as I do? (Helen, this is a recent math program that is taking all the schools around me by storm. People who teach math, whom I trust, tell me that it really is good for the kids, but it completely baffles many of us parents who grew up learning more 'traditional' math - the kids add, subtract, multiply and divide from LEFT to Right!)
Anyway, on our 4 day cruise two years ago, we did the online check in. But I am _certain_ that I printed many more forms. Now it only says that we have to print the signature page and not all of the pages. Someone mentioned that the real forms seem shorter, so I guess this may be in line with an entire policy change, but it seems pretty wild to me. I handled the check in myself for a group of 5 last time and the check in process was _very_ short for me. However, we spent a _lot_ of time waiting in port to board once we were checked in. :sad2:
I'm trying to get there earlier this time and hopeful that we'll be able to board sooner!:yay:

If you're talking about the "French Riviera Beach Rendezvous" I checked out the beach and the nude part of it is much further down than we'll be. Of course their still might be someone headed there that is "nudie patootie" but we're chancing it. Jack is telling everyone that he is heading to the nude beach with his mother-in-law because it sounds spicier that way!
From what I understand, the ones that are lacking clothing are not the ones that teenage boys would want to see without their bathing suits! :rotfl:

Our original plan had us on the Disney Magic this week while we celebrated our 25th anniversary (today, July 7th). Though we are not on the high seas, my life has been a great cruise for these many years. Thanks for a great life disneymom8589princess:, and thanks for introducing me to Disney so many years ago.

I teach 2nd grade and we use the Everyday Math program, too. Some of it I like and some of it just seems like a more complicated way to teach the "traditional" form of carrying and borrowing. They give it nice fancy names like "trade first" and "partial sums algorithm" instead!
By the way, thanks to everyone for their well wishes for our 25th anniversary yesterday! We're looking forward to really celebrating and relaxing on the cruise!! :woohoo: It sounds like many families are busy this summer with plays, baseball, and VBS!! :) I'm sure you all will be ready for some "down time", too!!

1. Amen to the congratulations on 25 years!
2. Our family wish Bennett and Johnna the best! (Will they do the talent show on the ship? Alison thinks about it, but can't decide what to do.) Also, may I ask Johnna's favorite princess?
2a. I had to laugh about your schedule and cleaning. My kids go to VBS the week we leave - their last night is the night before we board the plane. And we, too, need to clean for the cat/fish sitters and I need to do some more before my kids first piano lesson tomorrow!
3. Marci, it is so exciting to hear about your boys! But I can't _believe_ your heat index!! Here in the east, it has been very cool and _very_ rainy this summer. I feel totally unprepared for the Caribbean weather!
23 days until FLA.
:woohoo:
Even with these hot days, we aren't as humid as Florida or the Caribbean so I'll be sweating with you. Today will be a good warm-up. Andrew's game today is again at 3:45, but the heat index is supposed to be 111. :scared1:
Hi guys
Kim and Dave many congratulations for the anniversary.
Well my docs came today :cool1: However no little UPS man they came via fedex (first time ever);)
Hope the Show goes well and also the baseball
Things are very hectic here too.
Take care and I'll catch up later after I've put tea on
BTW MAdonna was fab well worth the 25yrs wait -
I'm so glad you enjoyed the concert. Yeah for docs!
Glad to hear the Madonna concert was good - I'm not a huge fan, but I heard she puts on a great show.
We got our docs yesterday. Quick question about those - have any of you done the on-line check-in on the Disney website? I guess it's a pre-check-in or something like that. I filled out all of the information, but I'm wondering if anyone has does this on a previous trip, and if so, did it work well? Did you get through the lines quicker when boarding the ship? Just curious.
I agree with the others. I've done on-line check-in or before that filled out the docs ahead, and it seems to only save handwriting. Except -- if you don't do it ahead of time you are standing back by the wall filling out paperwork instead of boarding or taking pics in the terminal. I've seen "The Look" from lots of people as they realize they didn't do their homework...

My kids learned the montessori way as it's easier for dyslexics to physically have beads and the other manipulatives in their hands. That being said, they got their math skills from their Dad and have to ask him when they have a question about homework. It didn't take much to pass my skills. :rotfl:

Who is going to join me on this? Sounds like fun.
The following article is from the "BLOG" section found on the homepage of the DisBoards. David Parfitt is a roaming reporter for the podcast crew. Go to the blog section and he has even pictures of the 5K run on Castaway Cay.
So here is David's article:
While I was on the Disney Wonder for the Four Day Podcast Cruise in May, I noticed an entry on the Navigator for our day on Castaway Cay (Day 3). It said 5K run, 8:30am, meet at gangway. Now I had heard about this run from previous cruisers, and heard you get to go out on the island before anyone else. Plus, it would be a good way to work off some of the extra calories I’ve consumed during the cruise. OK, this is one of the reasons I run – so I can do some touring on my feet. So come along with me on a running tour of Castaway Cay.
It was an absolutely gorgeous day on Castaway Cay. It was sunny and 80 degrees, incredibly humid, but not unbearably hot yet at 8:30am. There were about 10 of us who have come out to run this particular morning including at least 4 or 5 fellow DISers from the Podcast Cruise. The run was not a race, but a guided 5k saunter along the island with a Cast Member. Our guide was Jacyln the Captain’s Personal Assistant. Jaclyn does the Castaway Cay 5k loop a couple times a week, and she also runs in Nassau, the other port-of-call for the Disney Wonder.
First we walked over to the map of Castaway Cay, and Jaclyn went over the running route with us. Jaclyn told us the hazards of running on Castaway Cay, and explained we will have to dodge many people along the route. She also told us what paths to avoid so we would not get hit by the tram. Finally, Jaclyn told us there was water all along the course housed in coolers designed to look like cargo crates.
We started our run at the Castaway Cay map, ran past the boat charter and the tram stop. We headed through the eating areas, past Cookie’s Bar-B-Q, and into the retail shop areas. Of course, nothing was open at the time. When we came to the bike rentals, we bore to the right, and made our way to the landing strip. We ran right down the Castaway Cay runway past the “wreckage” of an old airplane.
Along the way, I was able to run with a few of DISers including my fellow Muddy Buddy Don (dpuck1998), Karen (klam_chowder), and Frank (FireDancer). Following the landing strip, the rest of the run was along the bike trails of Castaway Cay.
When we reached the end of the bike trail, there was a wonderful view of a tranquil “deserted” beach. This sight alone was worth the effort of the run.
Now it was time to loop back, and head back to the ship. Below are views along the bike trail during the run.
We ran back down the runway, and there were some excellent views of the ship if you wanted to stop and take pictures. At this point, I needed to get back to my family on the ship. [My wife was waiting for me for our Palo Brunch.] Then we worked our way through the shops and dining areas back to the ship where we started. It was a great run. It was an excellent way to wake up, and besides, how many times can you run on a tropical island? The run was a particularly good way for me to get oriented to the island since I had never been there before. If you’re a morning person and like to exercise, I would definitely give this 5K a try. Plus, at the end of the day when I got back to my room, I had a nice certificate to mark the occasion.

Shipmates,
We are one week away from giving my daughter to a very special young man. As we near the day we are practicing our father/daughter dance from the song "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman. I have included a video of the song, and we are even using a neighbor girl to play the young Melissa.
I will post the actual dance after next weekend.

Does anyone know if you can walk the 5K - I'd be interested but I'm SO not a runner.
We got our paper work today - and I'm so excited - although a bit overwhelmed with everything that I have to finish before then!
The kid's production of Aladdin closes tonight - I'll be relieved not to have to drive downtown Pittsburgh everyday!
I sent a PM to those who are participating in the FE exchange!
Helen - I'm planning on bringing a Pittsburgh exchange - but I'm not sure when we'll be boarding - we land in Orlando at 11 something...

Dear Dave,
Oh, gwarsh! You got me. I didn't know the song. 8 bars into it, I'm here crying and wrecked. I wish you such luck. Although my daughter is only 8, I sat here thinking how doomed he is when it comes to dancing at her wedding. I'm not sure that Mothers of the Groom don't get off (a little) easier. There aren't so many songs like 'Cinderella' or 'Butterfly Kisses.' It was 11 years ago, and we danced to "Wind Beneath my Wings." Still makes me sentimental. Anyway, thanks for the tears and the memories!

Don't tell anyone, but the first time I heard this song Kim and I were picking up pizza and on the way to the restaurant she asked if I wanted to hear the song our daughter, Melissa, picked for the father/daughter dance and of course I wanted to. Anyway, I reacted the same way you did.
One month ago I thought I would be fine, now I am six days away and I am getting a little nervous. My goal is to have most of the mascara in the place running on the faces of our guests:rolleyes1
We have a pretty good ending planned.

We've had a pretty stressful time here the last couple of days -
Floss (one of our dogs) is epliectic and not had a fit for 4 months - guess what shes had 9 in 72 hours:sad2: We have been to the vets and they have upped her medication to try and stabilise her. Its such a worry as we are leaving on Friday. The vets have said that if she continues to have seizures we can board her with them - I just hope she stabilises soon bless her - she gets so dis-orientated.
I've not packed a thing yet and my house is the biggest mess you'd ever seen. I just wish we were there at wdw. Its a long journey but worth it.

From what I've read (and from doing several 5Ks per year), yes you can walk! We will probably see all kinds, from the really fast folks who finish it in 15 or 16 minutes to the walkers who take 45 mins to an hour, along with everything in between. We are in between. I'm more of a racer and try to run them as fast as I can but my son is more leisurely so when we run together we go at his pace. The important thing is to have fun & get some exercise!
Helen - I'm so sorry to hear your dog is having medical issues. Hope things get better soon.

Dear Helen,
I wish you and your dogs all the best. I am hopeful that you will be able to leave Britain in peace. I had to laugh at your packing list. I'm bringing 3 large suitcases, but for 4 people. I'm trying to keep the shoes to 4 pairs. Had to buy new swim trunks for my dh, and am going shopping with him tomorrow for 'dress' pants. - My SON, oth, semi-insisted that I buy him a Tux - and I totally caved for the photo ops! :rolleyes1 Sigh. I've gotten my packing list pretty well made, and many things laid out, but I still feel panicked. I'm trying to get the box I want to mail packed - trying to send most of my FE stuff, and sunscreen etc. by mail rather than lugging it. But I'm paranoid about getting the box _in_ the mail soon.
Good luck packing to all!

Joy - Had to laugh about your shopping & spending money on your son. We recently discovered that our boys didn't really have any dress clothes so we made TWO trips to Kohls and literally spend hundreds of dollars buying new clothes, mostly for the boys, including dress shirts, ties, jackets, etc. Right afterward, we thought, "what did we just do!?" :rolleyes1
Helen - Had to laugh at your post, too, about the shoes! I'm trying to keep mine down to 5 pairs (not sure I will do so, though), and you are taking 11! But then I remembered that you are not just cruising and realized that if it were me, I would probably take 11 pairs, too! ;)

WDW -disney tickets, online checkin, hotel reservations, discovery Cove tickets
NY - car company email, hotel reservation, Green Day concert email, Wicked tickets, dinner cruise email,
Cruise - Cruise docs, online cruise contract printed, itinery, Palo brunch group email confirmation, extra set of Esta print outs, towncar email
Other important docs - Passports, travel insurance, traveller cheques, money, letter from gp about my medication, our 10 page hiloiday planner (which I made)
Vouchers - Shopping vouchers I got from online for the airport and Orlando premium outlets
What do you think? Have I forgotten anything?
The only think I've not had time to do is make the posters for my cruise door:confused3 but I think I'll survive.

I apologize if I sounded critical. I am trying (and utterly failing) to pack light. At 5, my son isn't helpful at carrying baggage. Helen, I wish you and Dave a safe trip. I hope that Saturday is perfect for Dave, Kim and their family! I'm thrilled I made people laugh! Colin is in swim class right now-and Helen and Marci I'm typing on _my_ new/old iPhone! (We got the 3g ones after they released the 3gs.)
Anyway, we just took the tux pants to be shortened and are off to buy Colin dress shoes and a tie for his suit. Sigh. I'm starting to wonder what the real cost of the cruise is if we add in the new clothes tab:eek:
Got our docs yesterday. This is really going to be real! Now if I can just decide whether I can leave behind oneof my pairs of Britain's greatest export 'cross the pond - my Fit-flops!

Ok, you've all figured out by now that I am a total sucker when it comes to my kids. However, I'm also kinda cheap. Colin's tux came from ebay and his suit from the local mother of all thrift stores. After buying his dress shoes, he insisted on going into the Disney store. Ok, I agree. When we arrive, I explain to the cast member that we are NOT buying today, since we're boarding the Magic in 16 days! Anyway, as I'm dragging Colin out of the store, I see, on sale for 5.99, a set of Dis sand toys. There is a car that looks like it is from Mickey Mouse Club House, with a small bucket that goes inside where seats would go; a _small_ sand sifter; a _very_ small shovel with a mickey head at the top; and three _small_ sand molds of Mickey, Donald and Goofy. So I made myself into a liar. I had planned to take some sand molds and sand scoops with me, but these molds are much smaller than the ones I had on my list. (The car is staying home.)
And I'm such a sucker for gift giving. I _thought_ I was done with my FEs, but then I saw something that I thought would be so neat! Sigh. FWIW, some of my gifts are individual, and some are per cabin. It should make sense, but I figured I'd warn.
Happy Thursday!

Can you believe the cruise is just a bit over 2 weeks away?!
Helen - you sound nice and organized (a woman after my own heart!) Have a safe flight tomorrow! :woohoo:
Sounds like everyone is having fun getting all the clothes, shoes, toys, etc. needed for the cruise! I'll be able to concentrate more on the shopping starting next week. ;)
Thank you, everyone, for your well wishes for Melissa's wedding on Saturday. The rehearsal is tonight and the rehearsal dinner is tomorrow night. :goodvibes

You didn't sound critical. Just unrealistic to me... :rotfl: Just kidding. I don't even really try to pack light on trips like these. With WDW beforehand, requiring the lightest clothes possible and most comfortalbe shoes, and the cruise needing a little bit nicer, plus dress shoes, I have thrown in the towel on "light".
Hang in there, Spin (and fiancee')! Last week was probably our most stressful. We were knee deep in final wedding things plus Melissa was working, packing up to move into their new apartment, and took an education test last Saturday. She was about at the end of her rope stress-wise, but this week has been a little more relaxing, believe it or not!
I'm excited to hear all about your wedding on the cruise! :woohoo:

Dear Spin,
Your description reminds me a bit of my wedding. It sounds like you are doing really well at "hanging tough" and keeping your "eye on the prize." The good news is that the next two weeks will FLY by and then you can get to the fun of your honeymoon. We wish you a calm and spectacular day. (Is that an oxymoron?)
Looking forward to meeting Mr. and Mrs. very soon!

Dear Kim,
I'm curious as to what Melissa took last weekend. Praxis or national? I was first certified in 1991 and had to take the NTEs. A few years back I took the Praxis in Middle Level English. I have some pretty strong opinions on these tests and was curious about what she took and how she felt. . .

Wow -- that's a lot to remember all by itself. Do you guys leave tomorrow? If so, have a great trip across the pond. I'll try to remember to print out an extra door sign or two so your door isn't naked. Well, except for your DVC magnet you'll get.
Thanks Marci - We leave for the airport tomorrow - we actually fly out on Saturday.
Not sure if I'll get on very much.
Im looking forward to seeing everyone on the cruise -
Dont forget the Dis meet 3pm on embarkation day (prom lounge), bring a long your gift bag.
Also for those who has brunch booked we'll meet 10.20am on the Sunday.
Good luck with the weddings Spin and ScubaD
Try and get some more pirates before the cruise!
Take care

I'm jealous - I'd love to know someone with shoe store "connections"! :yay:
I'm the one with the "wall of shoes," as my husband puts it, so I will probably have to eat my words that I'm only taking 5 or 6 pairs!
We leave 2 weeks from tomorrow! I'm already in the beginning stages of vacation mode and having trouble focusing on anything at work. :)

She took the WEST-E test, which is the Washington state education state. She also took the Oregon state test (Orela) since that's where she went to school and got her degree. The OR test is good in Oregon and California, but unfortunately, not in WA, so that's why she had to take another one.

Just two weeks away now!
I really had an agonizing decision to make this week, one I never thought I'd be dealing with in July. DD 13 was scheduled to leave in them morning for one week of camp in Missouri. I knew that two other girls from our area who go to this camp came home with the flu about two weeks ago, so I called about ten days ago and talked to the camp nurse. It sounds like they were doing everything humanly possible to stop the spread of the flu. I decided that I would see how it went the term before my daughter's. I talked to the nurse on Wednesday, and they had sent 16 home with flu (out of 300). I was thinking I shouldn't send her, but still wondered if I was overreacting. But then when I talked to the camp yesterday, that number had increased to 40!!! So I felt like that was confirmation that she should not go. Fortunately, they will just transfer the tuition over to next summer.
If it weren't for the August 1 cruise, I wouldn't worry so much about it. My kids rarely get sick. But I just could not risk it! And since we are traveling with cousins and grandparents, obviously they would go on without us, and my kids would be heartbroken.
I am still sending my older boys to church high school camp. We have had instances of flu around here, but I don't feel as worried. My kids are around these kids all the time, and mine were exposed to flu that some of these kids did get when they went on a mission trip a couple of weeks ago. My kids are all taking Tamiflu right now, so that should help some too.
Anyway, what a crazy, crazy summer! I'm glad I have travel insurance, but I'm praying I won't need it!

There is a sense of satisfied quiet in the house this morning. Now that the wedding is over and we are all back to normal, whatever that may be.
I just have to say how proud I am of my little girl. princess: She was so calm and confident yesterday. When the coordinator pulled me away from the wedding party to be with the bride in another area of the church just before our march down the aisle I became a very nervous, but proud, dad. She was so calm and looking forward so much to that moment.:cloud9:
To the future dads with this to look forward to, what a time in your life. To those who have walked the aisle, you understand.
And by the way, my goal was to have 30% of the mascara running after the father/daughter dance. I far exceeded that, but we even got a few tears from biker guys, construction workers, and a father-n-law who was ready with a few quips before I started. For the first time in our 25 years of marriage my FIL had tears and was speechless. I can't wait to post our You Tube video.popcorn:: Although the tears could have been on "how" I danced,:dancer: now that I think about it.
See you in 13 days.:cool1::woohoo:

I remeber our daughter saying how Disney would not be an invited guest in her wedding, which was fine. We understand that the Disney bug doesn't have to effect every aspect of our lives.
So she gets engaged in front of Cinderella's Castle in Disneyland,:smickey:she walks down the aisle to the tune of "Flying" which is the soundtrack to the movie "Peter Pan" and was also the background tune for those "Year of a Million Dreams" commercials Disney played a couple of years back,::MickeyMo had a glass slipper on top of her cake,::MinnieMo we danced to the tune of "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman.:mickeyjum

Joy - Glad you're feeling better. Were you able to pinpoint the culprit? (Such as a certain restaurant, etc?) Several years ago my son (who gets sick only very rarely) became ill after eating some frozen custard. To this day he refuses to go back to this ice cream store, not that I blame him! No fun!

Hi guys this is me state side posting from boardwalk! We had a good flight but dave and I are totally mixed up with jet lag. We r wide. Awake at 4am! Yesterday we were at epcot . Soarin is my new favourite ride we did it twice . Had a lovely meal at le cellier. Sadly dave and I both have blisters now- anyone know how to get rid of them! What with jet lag and blisters we've changed our plans and are just chilling out here.
Congrats kim on being the next pirate and I'm so glad the wedding went well.
Take care all and I'll be seeing u soon!

Glad you made it safe and sound! Isn't Soarin' great?! We're hoping to get reservations at Le Cellier when we're there in January. :goodvibes Yes, the wedding was beautiful (but that might be coming from a biased mom!). :cloud9:

Thank you, everyone, for the :goodvibes. This wedding is slowly coming together, but exciting nonetheless. Up till about 1am last night working on favors, and still more to go...gotta print the programs too, and finishing buying gifts for the bridal party...
Oh wait, I'm not on the wedding forum anymore ;)
Did I mention how much I'm looking forward to this cruise?

Gald you made it there safe! Hope you're having fun and getting some rest (and that your jet lag is gone before the cruise). Soarin' is a great ride - definitely my favorite at Epcot (okay, maybe tied wit Test Track). See you soon!

Dear Helen,
So glad you are safe. Hope the feet are healing. (or heeling?) Soarin' didn't become Disney's most famous and beloved ride for no reason, did it? We only did it once, two years ago, and certainly can't wait to go back. . .but that's another trip. Enjoy NY!
Dear Spin,
I hope the favor all-nighters are nearing the end. Best wishes for a spectacular day on Saturday. I'm really glad you are out west. Not a good forecast here on the east coast.:sad1:

Ok, the video of my father/daughter dance has arrived. I want to make a few comments first though.
1. I don't dance. But in spite of that fact there is nothing I would not have done for my little girl on her special day.
2. I break down at the end after she rushes back to give me a hug. I think this is due to my realization that at that moment i am no longer the #1 man in her life. it is hard to give that up after 23.8 years.
3. She has a great husband.
So without further adeui, here it is.
Dave
Sorry, I am having trouble downloading the video

Hey everyone,
Just an FYI in case you were not aware: Some airlines have updated their checked bag fee. It is less expensive if you check in online and "check" your bags (including paying the fee) during your online check-in. USAir and Delta, for example, charge you $5 more per bag if you wait and check-in at the airport ticket counter.
This is fairly new and I didn't realize until my husband saw something about it on the news.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if you've already discussed this, but who has Main and who has Late? Just curious!
We always get Main because we eat dinner early, around 5:30 (which is 4:30 Eastern). Maybe we'll see some of you at dinner, although I realize we may not get the same rotation.
I made my Parking Spot (long-term parking) reservation and set my mail hold w/USPS today. Sorta makes it all more REAL that it's coming up quick!! :cool1:

We have late, which is fine with us. Actually, a funny story - we booked Palo for our last night, at 6:30p. Late seating is at 8:15p. I told DF that we'd miss the last regular rotation because of Palo. Her response?
"Well, if we get done with Palo by 8:15p, couldn't we just go to the regular seating too and snack?"

Hey Dave,
Sorry, I must have overlooked your question originally. I've been working on getting my DF on the boards, especially when I had my Engagement PJ (which is linked to the picture of me proposing to her) - to no avail. Possibly after the cruise, but I don't think she'll have too much time to be on here over the next week or so. I can't imagine why...:lmao:
Same goes for me - but I'll try and keep up with everything on here as long as possible.

Hey Spin,
I never realised that we could review the entire story by clicking on your picture. Needless to say I spent the last 30 minutes catching up on your story and meeting Danielle. What a great story. Everything you did was impressive, from the proposal and how the CM's gathered together to assist in your special day, to the song the CMs sang to your bride (I assume they were not on American Idol), to the "Share the Date" (It took awhile to understand what STD really meant) photo, the church and reception buildings, and the rest. Can't wait to hear the story in more detail.
Have a great week and a GREAT Friday. See you next Saturday, 3PM in the Promenade Lounge.

Spin
Spin,
I'm totally cracking up reading this:rotfl2:, and my MIL who will be cruising with us thinks I've totally lost it. (Not that she _ever_ thought I _had_ it!) :joker:
FWIW, we have main dining. Young kids and grandparents with issues who can't eat ridiculously late. We also have Palo ressies for Friday evening, but at 6:00. So I hope that we'll be able to say "Hi." But let me say this about eating at Palo, having done so once before: Spin, you and Danielle are CRAZY if you try to eat any more after it.
1. The dinner will likely take at least 2 hours.
2. When we ate there before with 6 people, the servers brought us, like 8 appetizers, 8 entrees, and 7-8 desserts. My father asked for a recommendation between the rack of lamb and a steak dish (?) and the waiter gave a recommendation, then brought my father both entrees. Unlike myself, my Dad is a very light eater and was entirely overwhelmed. With both dessert and appetizers, we each ordered something, and the waiter brought at least 2 "other" items to our table as well.
3. YMMV, but Palo was truly amazing and we were really happy we ended our cruise that way.
In one week at this moment, I'll be in the WDT!!!:cheer2:

So I thought I was doing great w/cruise plans: paperwork done & ready, check. Passports, check. Mail hold and parking reservations, check.
And then yesterday the packing began. Several hours and 2 emergency trips to Kohl's later (first for DS12 who had outgrown ALL of his long pants, second for DH who had outgrown most of his slacks*, lol), I'm only about halfway done. Yikes! Usually when I travel it's just me for 3-4 days and I'm super-packer. The extra people and the extra days are really throwing me off!
Last night I was headachy and cranky, but when DS12 told me goodnight, he also said how excited he is about the vacation. This was a good reminder to me to R-E-L-A-X and not sweat every detail so much.
*In DH's defense, he works at home and a lot of his slacks were from the old office days, so they needed to be replaced w/updated ones anyway :).

I'm also in panic packing mode. We haven't been home on the weekend in over a month, so when we got back from our friends house last night I finally got started. We will definitely have too much luggage, as I can't take enough time to figure out what we really need and don't need. Thank goodness I'm an elite status flyer with American so I don't have to pay for bags. Now tips for the people that have to carry all the stuff. :faint:

Melissa, you totally made my morning!:) You've already heard my shopping woes. I have one large back packed pretty much for the kids. 2 small bags nearly packed with stuff for Saturday, FEs and a few snacks. I've been working on my packing list for 6 weeks and still want to cry.
My son JUST decided he wants to take a certain shirt - after I've already packed (into the suitcase) all of his outfits. [I'm using the shirt, shorts, underwears, socks in a liplock baggie method - just throw it to him and tell him to put on what's in the bag. Did it last cruise and my DD loved it so much she made me pack her that way for her 3 day overnight dance camp!]
So now I have to paw through the suitcase, get him to choose a shirt to take _out_ an replace with the one he wants now. :rotfl2: When will I ever learn? Of course, I try to calm myself by thinking about Spin. It can always be more stressful. . .

Hey Joy,
I'm with ya! The guys have been less active in packing than I, but then complained a little when I didn't do their daily outfits in ziploc bags like I did my own. So my kids' assignment for today is to gather their clothes together for my approval before packing. (We'll see what they've actually done when I get home from work ;))
I guess I'm sort still in shock over the amount of time it is taking to get everything together and packed. Good point about Spin. I would probably explode if I had to deal with wedding stress on top of vacation-packing stress. :goodvibes
See you soon! Oh, and I'm in the process of getting a new cell phone. I should have it tomorrow. I'm pretty sure my # is going to change (long story on why) so I can PM my # to you as soon as I know for sure.

Hi again to everyone, been reading through all of the forums and I had to share my thoughts on doing laundry while on the cruise. Now, to each his own, it may be your preference and I don't mean any offense. But for me, there is no freakin' way I'm planning on doing laundry on my vacation! :goodvibes
I keep reading in-depth comments about planning for laundry soap, having enough quarters, etc., and it made me laugh. It never even occurred to me that people did laundry on the cruise ship until I read it here. I guess if somebody spilled something at dinner and needed to re-wear it (like boys' slacks or something) I would do it if I needed to. Otherwise, heck no - the dirty clothes are going in a big ol' pile in a suitcase to come home with me :thumbsup2!

After much deliberation I decided to book parasailing for DS15 and I in St. Maarten, and chose a place launching from Bobby's Marina which is close to the cruise ship dock. (And when I say much deliberation, I mean a LOT.) Sent them an email this morning to reserve it, and I just received a reply saying they are closed for maintenance that week.
Bah! What are the odds ... :headache:
Yes, I know there are lots of other options but I had finally made a decision. Now I feel like I'm starting over. Castaway Cay's parasailing slots are all booked or else we'd just do it there.

I will be doing laundry. But we're morning people so I'm planning to enjoy my balcony while doing so. But TG for those new Pyrex sheets!

Castaway Cay's parasailing slots are all booked or else we'd just do it there.
but yeah me! 850! Here's to the Castaways!

OMG, Joy - I so didn't mean to imply that you or anyone else is a loser. I apologize. I should have chosen my words better. I guess it just never occurred to me 'cause I really hate laundry (and thus that's why it was funny to me). On the flip side, I'm planning on working out & running on the cruise 'cause I hate to skip my workouts, and I'll bet there are plenty of people who are saying "no freakin' way" to doing that on vacation!
P.s. Congrats on #850!!

dearest Melissa, I _never_ felt or intended to indicate any offense. My loser comment was totally toungue in cheek - now foot in mouth! 5 outfits + good clothes is enough for me to lug through the airport - and my baby is no use at all in the lugging dept. To each his own.

Green Day - I'm envious! They are coming to KC on August 12 but it's right after we get back and I don't know that we'll be able to go.
Glad you are having a great time. See you soon. We are getting so excited in my house! (Even the almost 15 yo is excited in his own low-key way ...)

I'm happy to report that I got the parasailing dilemma solved this morning, and we're reserved with Caribbean Water Sports on St. Thomas. :thumbsup2
They've been wonderful in replying to my (4) emails w/questions, and were very nice over the phone making the reservation. DS15 and I are going to do the parasailing, and DS12 and DH are going to ride along in the boat. This arrangement makes everyone happy - yea!:cool1:

Thanks! Their website says they use a 600' towline and you go 350-400' in the air. The St. Maarten company had a choice of 400, 600, or 800. The 800' option came with an "extreme dip" at the end ... pretty sure I didn't want THAT option! Truth be told, I wanted to parasail in St. Thomas anyway so it all worked out. Today at lunch I bought a 2nd waterproof disposable camera so that Ryan and I can take one up with us, and the other two can have one in the boat. I'm with lostatdisney, the next couple of days are going to go by too slowww ...

That "Getting Busy" thread is cracking me up. I've learned that you maybe shouldn't be too interested in your neighbor's veranda ... apparently you never know what you might see :rotfl2:
On another note, partway through packing we realized that our two big suitcases are not enough and had to borrow another one from my SIL ... yikes that's a lot of stuff!

It seems the cost to take all of the needed luggage is almost the cost of the cruise itself.:scared: We were discussing the luggage situation last night in our "cool" tub (hot tub in the winter). I was planning on one case each but we may have to add a third.
On a side note, does anyone know of a good portable steamer we can buy for getting wrinkles out of dresses and slacks?
And as a passing note, it appears the "busy" thread was getting to be too much for the family boards. I think the moderator removed it before disneymom8489 could review it.:confused3

Good question, I'd be interested in recommendations as well. Although I did pack a travel-sized bottle of Downey wrinkle releaser. Not quite as good as a steamer but should work pretty well.
Not that I want to do a lot of ironing, but I assume you can borrow one from guest services if needed?

Dave,
I'd love to. This cruise is first - a multigenerational vacation; second - an experiment in can my DH tolerate 7 days on a boat; third- a Disney fix for me, kids and DGF. Now, if this goes well, I may be able to talk family into another, but not in the _near_ future. I think rebooking on board is a distant "Dream." On the other hand, if I win 10K at bingo, all bets are ON!:yay:

Jack's degree is in Instructional Leadership - basically running a classroom. It's an educational degree and he's hoping to teach at the community college level.
It is my parent's 50th Wedding anniversary year which is why we are all traveling together. I had a student doing the college program this year (she was friends with the Little Einsteins, Chip, Dale and many others) and she sent Anniversary buttons for them to wear on the cruise. But they don't like a fuss so they might not.

Flo -- thank you for posting the pics of us leaving port. How I wish we hadn't left yet, though.
It was a terrific time, and I enjoyed meeting everyone at the meet. You are a bunch of fabulous people, and I only wish I had more time to visit with you all. The FE gifts were fabulous, so thank you everyone who participated and special thanks for the organization of it!
Helen -- thank you so much for arranging everything. The meet and brunch were so much fun.
We did rebook, but just a dummy date for 2010. We won't cruise again until 2011.
A few things we heard from a reliable source, but I don't remember if I got this down correctly. We were told that the Magic would go to the west coast to cruise after the new ship delivers in 2011, and she would eventually do Alaska and Hawaii. We were told the ship in 2012 would most likely cruise europe. Don't quote me word for word, but that's basically what I understood. We heard from another source that the new ships will have an entire floor of suites and their own concierge lounge. We weren't told anymore than that.
If anyone has any pics from the meet, I'd love to see them. We were so busy unpacking and trying to help our neighbors settle in that I didn't think to bring a camera.
Post cruise blues have settled in, but we are going to WDW at the end of December, so that helps a little. I swear I swayed for a few days after we got back on Saturday.
I hope everyone is well!

We won't be on an Alaska cruise, but will be doing the August 17-22, 2010 Key West and Bahamas cruise with our DD, DSiL, DS, DDiL (just married this past Saturday - Sept. 19) and friends. We are looking forward to our big family cruise!! I've been joking with the 2 sets of newlyweds that they will have to hold off on starting any families until after the cruise! :rotfl:
That sounds like fun! I know your son's wedding was just as much fun as your daughter's was. How neat to have everyone together.
I was not that excited about 2011 summer offerings. My boys really just want to go to the beach, and since we can only go during the summer we are limited. I said I wouldn't do a shorter than 7 night cruise again, but it looks like we might be doing that in 2011. I'm concerned about the prices on the new ship so I doubt we could do b2b but we'll see.
Anyone have any group shots of us from our cruise?
This is the only one I managed to get.

Oh how fun! If our next sailing was without kids we might just want to join in on the Alaska sailing. My parents loved their Alaska cruise and especially their excursions.
Have fun!

I only have one group shot and it is pretty much identical to yours, Marci! By the way, I love your family picture in your signature!! Is that in St. Thomas?

Hi Kim. Thank you. No -- that was actually St. Martin. We had hoped to have the Magic in the background, but our guide seemed to miss the point. My favorite pic from the cruise is formal night with Minnie. I think that will be our Christmas card this year.
Have y'all been to Nassau before? A lot of people complain about it, but I love it. We always go over to the Atlantis and will be taking our second vacation to the resort next summer.

We have been to Nassau twice before on the Wonder, but have never been to Key West. Dave, my son, son-in-law, and his dad are planning on scuba diving in Nassau. I don't know what us girls will do. There really isn't a lot in town...you can only go to the Straw Market so much! I know my daughter would love to do the Atlantis excursion where you get to go on all of their waterslides (her dream!), but it's pretty pricey! :)

The first couple of times we went to Atlantis, we just did the Dig and tour and had lunch and walked around. That was without kids. The next time, we were on a RCL cruise on a work retreat. They had a beach excursion that was reasonable but didn't include slides. Both boys were still young then so that worked for us. When we were there on the Wonder, we got a terrific deal on a room that was much cheaper then the Disney excursion. We liked it so much we went back last summer for 3 nights. It looks like that will be our vacation next summer as well, but we'll go for a week.
You might find it fun just to take a taxi over there for lunch and to see the Dig. Then you could do Spa time on the boat. :) Whatever you decide on, I'm sure it will be fun since you're with family. :goodvibes

I'm liking your ideas! I had heard that it can be cheaper to book a hotel room for the day to use the waterslides than pay for the excursion through Disney. Atlantis might be the way to go this time...at least for the ladies!! :goodvibes

If they end up doing this, I'll make sure they direct any questions to your Dave! :goodvibes
