Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!
New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Not much to report today. I set out for 12 and ended up with 3. I've been in sinus purgatory all week and having stomach issues due to a change in meds. Just wasn't feeling it and when I realized I'd left my cell phone at home and wouldn't be able to call DH if I had a problem, I just turned around and went home.
:wizard: :wizard: for the sick, injured and snowbound this week!

I made it for the scheduled 8 miles. It went well for me this weekend. It was My kind of weather today: Sunny and 29 degrees and my pace was lovely compared to last week. I finished in 14:06 pace and that is b/c I struggled a bit toward the very end. It was sunny and I was smiling during my time!
Dana, Wow! your are one flying gal!
Christa, PD for your next weekend. Seems like a lot on your plate.
Jen in GA, that was one great w/o and with Harry to push too. You and he amaze me.
Jen, good luck with TM and welcome back to reality.
Cecilia, I hope it was fun for you!
Stephanie, I am hoping your day was ok today. Good luck with your LR.
I WISH everyone speedy recovery for those in need and happy running if you are taking a jaunt on Sunday!

Morning all. Heading out for my LR in a few. But the running gods are mad at me I think. It's raining today--yesterday was beautiful, but since I decided to postpone my 16 today, I'm being punished! At least it's not a cold rain or snow.
Yesterday, the whole family participated in the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for the Arthritis foundation. DH and I pushed the kids and walked with my mom and dad. My dad has pretty severe osteoarthritis (one hip replaced already, and both knees need done as well) and my grandmother had severe rhuematoid arthritis her whole life. So we walk for them--of course we set no land speed records. We did finish under an hour, and a local TV celebrity sang "Happy Birthday" to DD
Okay, okay, really now, I'm heading out the door.

Good morning WISH Team. The beginning of the week is the only time I can keep up with this thread, it moves so fast.
I still don't have a packet and race number yet, am I the only one? They will have to just write the number on my forehead with a Sharpie I guess. Oh the shame of being the only one without a number, and no mail today.
I'm going tio test my foot with a few easy miles this morning. If it holds up I'll try for 6 tomorrow, I need to get the goofy training back on track. I was walking on tues and it was sore the whole time but about 6 miles I started getting sharp pain so I have been taking it easy since.
Have a great Sunday.

Panda: Sorry to hear the paw is still sore and boo on not having your number yet. Hope you can walk today with no pain.
Today is my day off and tonight and into tomorrow we are due for at least 12 inches of snow. :woohoo: Yes, you all read that right, actually we are on the line between 9-14 and 12-24 inches so it is just anyone's guess. If anyone wants a great visual, get a picture of me dragging 2 bales of hay to the cows in crotch deep snow because my DH plows and won't be home to do chores. It has happened more than once!!! :scared1: Oh, and I have to make happy 3 trips in one feeding.
On the up side, my skis are out and ready to go for tomorrow when I get out of work. MIL is making the call on ski or snowshoe and I am ready for either. Ice skating today in the 20 degree temps!!!! :santa:
Hope everyone has a GREAT day!!!!!!!!!

Hi All,
Reading some of these posts makes me so happy I leave in the South. Lived in Syracuse many many years so I know cold and snow. Just have no need for it anymore :)
Easy week this week. 10K race yesterday building up to a 20 miler this weekend.
And Dave, I still don't have my packet either.
Good luck everyone!

Hey I hear ya Duane, if I was getting ready to get 12 inches of snow I would be freaking. That Lisa is a tough gal. I wouldn't survive dragging bales of hay out to frigid cows. I would have to bring them in the house and we could all have beer and chips and watch the animal planet.
I did manage 2 miles easy today, foot is still a bit sore but better so 6 on the menu for tomorrow.
Cool movie Robert, now if we could get Judy to make us a cross training video.popcorn::

Good morning WISHers! Hoping everyone is having a great Sunday.
12 miles scheduled, 13.1 completed. Thought I had 18 to do. Glad I checked my training schedule. Completed in 2:45:40 for a 12:18 pace. Felt good throughout except for the sore feet towards the end. I just don't know how to alleviate the problem. I guess we'll adapt and overcome. :thumbsup2
Mel - Sorry your feeling poorly.
Lily - Congrats on the 8 miler. 29 degrees? I'd definitely be doing some high-speed whining. :rotfl:
Stephanie - Hope you had a good run.
WWDave - Take care of that foot. I still don't have my race packet either.
Lisa - Have fun in the snow.
Duane - I'm glad I live in the south too. :thumbsup2 Of course I tell everyone I live in the "LA" portion of FLA, Lower Alabama. :lmao:

Well, I finished the 16 miles. 9:24 pace, total time 2:30 on the nose! Really happy about that--want to keep my LRs about 20-30sec/mile slower than race day. Right on track for me! Luckily, the rain held off until just a little bit ago--but that also made it REALLY humid for my run (cut the air with a knife humid) and add that to the lovely headwind made for not the best conditions. And what's up with 70 degrees in December!
Kristi--Hope they win the Hannah Montana tickets. They were the hottest things in town last week!
Lisa--Wow on the snow and the chores. Happy to be another southerner
WWDave--Hmmm, still no packet--maybe Disney heard that You just ain't right!;)
Christa-meant to post this earlier--but I can't wait to see what smokin' time you put up next weekend!
Dana--You are flying girl! Don't know if I'll be able to keep up with you in Jan!
Okay, naptime for me. We've had the busiest weekend yet of the year, and I'm beat!

Kristi good luck to them on getting Hannah Montana tickets! I'll go vote. We ended up getting tickets just a few days before the concert and I felt like we had won the lottery!!!

Happy Sunday guys! I’m with a lot of the rest of you—if I don’t get in here on the weekend, I can NEVER keep up with the thread on a daily basis. I guess that’s a good sign that our WISH team is growing daily!
WWDave—did you tick off the Goofy gods? That's the only reason I can possibly dream up that you wouldn't have gotten your packet. DId Erica get hers yet? I like your idea of body marking your race number on your forehead. Speaking of Sharpies—I wonder if we’re going to have the really cool Sharpie signs along the race course this year again. Did I just miss those last year or were they really not there?? :confused3
Vic—so if you get to WDW in January, and can’t remember how long the marathon is, are you going to run about 32 miles or so? :) Good job on the 13.1!
Kristi—I texted my vote. Hope they end up winning. What the heck is with this Hannah Montana craze anyway? Krista keeps telling me that the craze over the New Kids on the Block was worse. I'll take her word for it, because strangely enough, I wasn't a big NKOTB fan. Shocking, I know.
Stephanie—great job on the 16! I have to admit that you are way faster than I am at this point, so unfortunately, I won’t be able to keep up with you guys in January in that 4:00 pace group. That’s ok, I’ll be cheering for all you speedies as I come by about a half hour later.
I got my scheduled 16 miler in this morning. In the rain. And cold wind. And amazingly enough, I actually enjoyed the run. Finished in 2:43 for a 10:10 overall pace. I was pretty happy with that, as that’s been the pace I’ve been trying to keep while I’m rehabbing my knee. I know we were all talking a couple of weeks ago about what to wear in the rain. I was thinking about that today while running. I was wearing shorts, cool max LS shirt, hat and a lightweight, waterproof running vest which blocks the wind. It was perfect for the temps (around 45 deg). I agree with the rest of you guys that anything moisture wicking will work, and just layer according to the temperature. The trick is keeping those feet dry. :)
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I will admit that I slacked the later half of last week and didn’t get a chance to finish reading the rest of last week’s thread. I may try to do that now. Good luck training and stay safe!
Oh, by the way, Krista told me to tell everyone HI! She’s been training, but not nearly as much as if she were running in January. She keeps wishing she would have signed up for the half. Maybe she can be a rebel and jump the corrals, beat up an unsuspecting runner, and take their bib. (kidding, although if the runner was a Bunguls fan, I wouldn’t put it past her. :) )
Talk to you guys later!

Vic—so if you get to WDW in January, and can’t remember how long the marathon is, are you going to run about 32 miles or so? Good job on the 13.1!
Hopefully they'll have signs or something to tell where the finish is. If not, I'll just follow the herd and stop when they stop. :thumbsup2 :lmao:

As the big weekend approaches, I thought I'd better start checking in here regularly. :goodvibes
I finished my 9 mile/18 mile weekend for the Goofy--I'm about a week behind the MFM schedule--on a W/R schedule. It was raining all this weekend, but I managed to complete it all on the treadmill. (I admire you, Steve, for toughing it out in your weather--I'm too much of a fair-weather slogger. :rotfl:)
I don't mind TMs, really, except I have this tendency to get blisters & it happens easier on the TM than on pavement (although I'm generally susceptible to blisters on my feet. I've tried everything I can think of: different shoes/socks, moleskin, Vaseline, praying to Achilles.... Any suggestions?
Anyway, I'm frightfully slow right now, but I completed the mileage and plan on staying ahead of the sweepers. ; life (relocation, job search, stress fracture) has interfered with training a bit, so I'm not where I thought I'd be, pace-wise. But I'm discovering the joys of walking, so that's a bonus. Plus, And DH (who's also doing the Goofy, but at a much faster pace) and I are already talking about doing next year!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the help & votes, guys! I edited my post though since it is apparently against DIS rules to ask for help. :sad2:
I did nothing training-wise this weekend. We spent yesterday at Santa's Village in the White Mountains. :scared1: Umm, who's bright idea was that?? So, note to anyone else out there who thinks that might be "fun" to do at Christmas - DON'T DO IT! :cold: Today was doing some housework & errands. I am so pooped right now, I am headed to bed. It's going to be a crazy day at work tomorrow with school closings too.

WWDave - No packet here either. I run to the mailbox every afternoon, only to straggle back with junk mail in hand looking like I just lost my best friend. Can I borrow your Sharpie?
Vic - My family now just expects that I'll spend the next 2 days after any run with my feet on ice. I drove back from today's race with the van on cruise and my foot on a frozen water bottle.
Mel - Hope you're feeling better SOON!
I posted my race report from this morning on the Race Report thread, but I'll give the short & sweet here. PR'd for the 5 miles - 56:52 for an 11:18 average. I don't run that fast! I might actually be motivated to start running midweek again, although this only running on the weekends seems to be working pretty well (since Nov 10 I've only run 2x other than LRs - gotta get going or Jan 12th may not be much fun.)

Thank your for getting to it b4 making me be the bad one.
Jackie, great event there. Yup, get going or you won't be smiling January time.
dkp, I'd say you were a week ahead of the MfM plan or I'm in trouble. My calendar shows 9/18 for next weekend for me. Dreading this one.
:scared1: I do not want to TM it. Where are the blisters? Can you sport tape them? Yay! for being ahead of the sweepers timewise.
Steve, good job on getting out there! Send Hi's back to Krista!
Stephanie, I do WISH your run wasn't too bad today.
No race packet for me either. We had a massive busy day here so no w/o. Tomorrow is a scheduled gym day for me.

Hey all - this weekend was 7/14 so that was fine, though I did whine massively about going out on Sunday, Tim has promised that if I ever say I'm doing Goofy again to quote me verbatim from my little speech - of course as soon as I actually started running instead of lying on the sofa moaning about it was fine and the 14 was worringly easy!
Anyway, busy as ever so that's it from me today. Helen

Good Morning WISHERS!!!
So... I kinda fell off the thread last week! It got a bit busy! I did finally catch up though!
Christa--I'm from Selma, NC! It's about 45 min east of Raleigh. Matt and I both work in Cary though.
Mel--Hope you are feeling better!
Lily--Glad tohear you had a good weekend!
Panda--How's the foot? Did your 6 miler go well? Any packet yet???
Lisa--12 inches of SNOW!!! We'll be lucky if we get a dusting!
Stephanie--Glad you had a good LR!
Steve--Good job on the LR in the rain!!!
For me... I did my C25K Day 3 of Week 7 on Saturday. I did 2.2 miles in 32 minutes which is my best time yet! I the last few minutes, I picked up my pace and almost felt like a runner! :goodvibes My STUPID FEET went NUMB though! ugh! This has got to stop! If hadn't of been for that, I would have felt great--maybe best workout yet! On Sunday, My mom and I decided to walk. We would pickup the pace occassionally. I attempted the race-walking. I'd seen a few videos on it. Not sure if I was doing it correctly though! WOW! What a workout! I felt that in my legs more than the jogging! Kudos to you who do that for many miles!!!

Good snowy morning all!!! :cold: We have been upped to at least 12" and maybe as high as 20 by the time it is done!!! Kids have no school so I am working, chatting and defusing. I guess that is either multitasking or cross training, not sure which!!
I have 40 minutes today which is supposed to be running, which I could do on the treadmill....but I could snowshoe....or I could ski...so many choices. I am thinking outside since: A. I can leave the kids and it is peaceful in the woods and; B. I can get some fresh air and out of being cooped up in the house!!! :rolleyes1
 to the sick and injured. Panda, hope the paw: makes it through the 6 today. Good luck with the training today everyone!!

Hi pretty princess.
No Erica and I have not ventued out yet. We are waiting for it to warm up a bit, it's currently 29 degrees with a stiff wind. It's stopped raining though. I still have to do that 6 miler, still hoping it will go ok.
Stacie numb feet are a sign that your shoes are to tight. The rule is that your runners/walkers should be a half to a full size larger than your regular shoes. Your feet swell with exercise so even if a shoe is comfortable when you are just wearing them for everyday stuff, they will be to tight after the first mile or two, and in the higher miles they can get really snug.
Good morning WISH TEAM:flower3:
Have a super day y'all.

Hey all... Not a whole lot to report. I didn't run until Sunday because I just got home from me trip and wanted to get some things done before the blizzard hit. So Saturday was spent with the kids and running errands. Sunday I hit the home TM because it was quite sloppy outside with all the snow and the lack of snow removal on a Sunday. My TM is in the basement right by a window, so the kids played outside and would stop by the window to wave and make faces at me. I did 1:45 which is about 8 or so miles for me. I was so glad it was a cut back week!
Big Vic - I have had those days where I thought I need to run more and was pleasantly suprised that I didn't!!! Congrats on your pace!!!
Mel - Oh I hope you feel better soon!!!! It's no fun being sick, especially when you have training to do. Right now I live in fear of all the germs my kids bring home from school!
Lisa - I live in the Winter Wonderland also. I love the seasons we have, but really don't live the windy cold. If I could live without wind, I think the weather would be perfect!
OK, I have a ton to do at work. And a staff meeting. My staff is being scroogy this year and not donating to the food bank, the box is half empty... or is is half full??? Well anyway, it should be 2 boxes full!!!
Have a great one all!!!

Frozen Panda--Thanks! I will try to losen my shoes! They are normally ok for the first 20 - 25 min, but those last 5-10. I just got them a few months ago and only use them for my training. They are the New Ballance 1223 (I think). They are regular width. Sometimes I need a wide, but I thought these may be ok. Maybe I should have gone w/ the wide... Oh, well. I'll losen them and hope they will be ok. I really don't want to have to buy new shoes! These cost me an arm and TWO legs! lol!
Hope you and Erica get in your 6 miles today! 29 degrees AND wind! Whew! Hope are able to stay nice and toasty!

Greetings all -
We had a tremendously busy weekend but still managed to get the miles in. I only had five on Saturday, but hey, that's what MFM calls for! :confused3 Actually, it only called for 4 but I add a mile every weekend just in case. But seriously, five miles feels like so little right now. Anyway, then I did three this morning. So I go add eight to our mileage thread.
Saturday night we had our benefit for the Sanctuary that rescued Mist. We had 19 people say they were coming but only 8 showed up! :headache: Grrrr. Well, thankfully those 8 were very generous.
Yesterday we saw Cirque de Solei Wintuk at Madison Square Garden. I guess we hadn't see La Nouba we would have liked it better. Charlie still thought it was good but I thought it was totally boring. La Nouba keeps you so entertained and awstruck the entire time. This one was nothing like that.
And now....drum roll please......many of you might remember when I got my first pair of Kayanos. Remember how I took them to bed with me? Ha ha ha! Well, this morning, I retired them. It was a hard decision to make, as those were the shoes that took me thru my first Half marathon in January. But they are just too worn out now. The treads are almost completely gone on the outside. I feel like I should hang them next to my medals or something. :guilty:
OK and yes, those of you who are right now thinking I get too attached to inanimate objects, the fact is, yes I do. :upsidedow
Mel - Oh you poor thing. :wizard: Who the heck ever came up with the idea of sinus' anyway!? They are nothing but trouble!
Lisa - You have cows? That is so totally cool. :cool2:
Lily - Excellent on the eight miles! :woohoo:
Gimping Panda - Ohh I'm sorry to hear about your paw. :wizard: I don't have my race packet either. WAHHHHH!!

dkp - As long as you are ahead of the sweepers, that's all that's counts! :thumbsup2
Jackie - Oh Jackie, my dear, I hate to argue, but you DO run that fast! Whooo hooo! :woohoo:
Stacie - Did you see the latest edition of RW magazine with the really nifty different ways to lace up your running shoes? A different lacing pattern may help too. :)

Hello!
I finally got back out after my recent cold/flu - whatever it is you wanna call it. I have only run twice since my Thanksgiving 10K so I was a tad worried, but DayQuil and a cup of coffee got me thru it. :thumbsup2
I ran 3.10 miles with DH and managed an 11:04 pace, decent considering I was trying not to push myself. I like when DH runs with me. He is faster, but he'll run up ahead and then come back. I just like him being in my view - I feel safer.
Hope everyone is well today! :wizard:

Stacie
Yes Erica and I got our 6.2 chilly miles in and my foot was fine. A little discomfort but much better.
Evil Erica caught me sleeping going up a steep hill and took off and left me. I finally caught her at the top. She is doing really well this year.

Judy: Cows are food. Cows are not cool. Horses are cool....cows not so much.
I went out snowshoeing with my DS6 today and we made it 1.55 miles. At about 1.3 miles he decided to stand under a tree and hit the branch hanging over his head. We had to switch hats. I looked marvelous in his rabbit fur bomber hat and he looked equally as fabulous in my ear warmer. But, he was a trooper and even though his neck hurt from the freezing snow, he tramped on. :thumbsup2

Little humor to start the day.
We went to get our Christmas pictures last night. After getting home and finding what I was supposed to wear on the bed, Lynnda came in to describe everything. Afterwards she asks a question that totally floored me, "Do you think they match?" My cloth selection each morning goes something like this, dark pants have a light shirt and light pants have a dark shirt. Now I am being asked if something matches. Figuring that she had spent time picking eveything out, I was sure that everything matched more than I could ever do even by accident. So being confronted with one of those questions that a guy has no clue to answer, I said the only thing I could think of, "Sure honey". :)
Pondering more during my run last night, I figured it was a way to blame me if the pictures didn't turn out good. I had been given the opportunity to change things and didn't so now I can accept all blame. However, the ace in my pocket is the fact that any picutre with her in it is good therefore I won't be in trouble. :thumbsup2 Which is good since we spent way more time there than we should have. :sad2:
Panda Dave - I have been looking for spare paws for you but so far I haven't found any donors. Our golden doesn't seem to want to part with his and the stray cats in the neighborhood have been avoiding me recently. I did find some bear paws but they didn't look like they would do much more than keep the current ones warm. Hope things work out quickly for you. By the way, what's up with this swimming thing when it is freezing outside. :scared:
Vic - Great job on your race this weekend. Those are great times, I will have to work harder now to keep you from catching with me early in the morning.
Lisa - Sounds like you had fun snowshoeing. Hope the doctors can figure out what is wrong.
Shan - Glad you are feeling better now. Hopefully you are now done with illness for the season.
Judy - "5 miles is so little now"...:lmao: I have a feeling that if I looked hard enough I could find a quote by you that said just the opposite. See how far you have come to think those distances are short. In no time you will feel the same about 13 or more. :thumbsup2
Kim - I don't think anyone will be kicked out. Glad to see you back.
Jen - Glad you were able to get your run in even if it was on the TM. Good to see that your kids had fun with you during it as well.
Stacie - Great job on keeping up with your training. You are doing great.
Kristi - Glad that you got your new "toy". Hope you enjoy it.
Better get to work now. Have a great day.

Good Morning Wish Team!
Another beautiful day in Atlanta. What I wouldn't give for a little of the rain that hit the West coast!
I did run on Saturday morning and it was a great run. One benefit of a serious drought is that you almost always have perfect running weather!
For some reason, life has decided to make training difficult. Sick kids, shopping, parties, projects, and DH's travel schedule are all conspiring againest me this week. How does anyone with a full time job train for a marathon at Christmas? Do you guys ever sleep? Wow.
I can't speak for the rest of you but I'm just about over all this training business.
Sign me up! Wait! I am not ready. No, sign me up. Wait! I don't have my packet.........

Apparently one cannot ask for help in a contest on the DISboards.
BUT you can list what you are selling on eBay & your seller name on the Budget threads...
Anywho, I have done nothing worthy of posting here on a training thread. I didn't manage to get to the Y as planned yesterday. I was truly all psyched up to go, then it started snowing again! :sad2: After my 2 hour commute yesterday morning in the snow:scared: , I did not feel like going out in it again. Bad Kristi! I will get to it today though.
For the record - I also don't know how anyone with a FT job trains for a marathon. I can't even get all my half marathon training in for goodness sake!
Bill - you will have to share your holiday picture with us!

Guess what--I am running the half marathon!!!!!!!!!!!!!   A friend of mine was supposed to run the half, but ended up hurting her knee really bad and actually will need surgery. She's letting me run using her bib/chip. I know it's not 100% ethical, but personally I don't have a problem with it, especially in a situation where an injury is preventing them from running. Anway, I feel REALLY bad for my friend, but I am HAPPY for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike- Good plan! I was just thinking about how hard it's going to be to get in my 5 miles today because of December being crazy. Then I started wondering, if I'm not trying to "race" the Goofy, could I just stop moving now and still survive?! :rolleyes1 That's part of why I signed up for a half in two weeks- force myself to keep moving...
Hope everyone is doing well. Harry had a low fever last night, so I'm totally paranoid right now (for me of course, not him- bad mother! ) Provided Harry gets better, we may run in a 5k this weekend. It's a little local race and I think they are ok with strollers (I'll call first). Harry needs to be in a race since he's put in the training too! Everyone is probably going to be gunning for me- who wants to be beat by someone pushing a stroller!? :rotfl: Hey- anyone know the proper etiquette for taking the stroller? Do I enter Harry in the race too?
Got to get back to work...

++++ Good morning everyone!! I just wanted to pop in and say I really need a hug. Sunday night my kitten (she's 4 actually) was throwing up. Yesterday she wouldn't eat, and wouldn't come out of hiding so I took her to the vet. At first the vet thought she might have had tinsel from the Christmas tree obstructing her somewhere so they took x-rays. Turns out, there's a multitude of things wrong with her. One of her kidneys is much smaller than the other, the large kidney is really bright on the x-ray, and she has some sort of mass around the area where her hips meet. She also has high blood sugar and an unusually high amount of sugar in her urine, so she might be diabetic. The vets want to do ultrasounds and biopsies, along with a feeding tube, since she won't eat. After a lot of talking and crying last night David and I have decided to let her go. I saw the x-rays, and truly don't think there's a chance to help her, even if we could financially afford it, which we can't. So the best thing for us to do is let her go without suffering.
To make matters worse, as many of you know I lost a son in 2003. Everytime I have EVER gotten pregnant we have gotten a new animal. Well, she was the one I got when I was pregnant with Matthew. I know it sounds REALLY stupid when I say it out loud (or type it) but it just feels like it's worse because of this. I don't know how to explain it. I am off to go call the vet and set up our appt, but I just wnated to ask for as much pixie dust as you guys can spare.
Thanks,
Dana

Wfloyd. Bill, buddy thanks for checking around for a new paw but mine is better. Oh and the swimming is at the health club in a heated pool with a hot whirlpool that seats, 10 to relax in after. I workout in the early morning and I'm usually the only one in the pool or the hot tub.
The main part of the health club is treadmills and stationary bikes and of course weights and exercise machines. I avoid this main area since when I workout I'm all about business, to much chat and visiting. It bothers me if I'm trying to get a good workout in and someone wanders over and wants to chat.
Even when Erica and I walk together we crank the iPods and get a grove on and go. Only if we have something we need to discuss will we chat on the walk. We do an occasional bit of teasing or bantering but mostly just zone into the walk.
Now on race week when the work is done I'm ready to socialize since I've put in the work and earned the right to kick back and relax.
I know I'm strange, but does anyone else feel like that? Does it bother you when you want to take care of business and someone wants to chat?
Krista, I hurt my achillies before the 2006 half so we took a girlfriend to Disney with us to run the half with Erica on my number. One thing that was pointed out to me after and I want to pass along: the race people don't know you, they will think you are the person on the number, carry some ID in case something happens they will know who you are. Have Steve's cell # on it also so if you were hurt they could call him. Nothing will probably happen but that way you have all the bases covered.
I WANT MY PACKET!
Not that I'm concerned or anything.
Ok on to the business of the day Erica and I are off on a 12 mile treck in the frozen tundra of Southern Kentucky. Lions and tigers and bears Oh My!
Have a great day y'all.

Sooo...training for me. Well...I had a Pilates Certification/Training all weekend which meant 16 hours of Pilates. :scared1: Sooo....I gave myself permission to do a shorter Long Run (is that an oxymoron???). I just headed out into the 20 degree cold evening after my Sunday training was completed (oh...I was all happy b/c I passed YAY). Anyway...it felt great to run. I kind of wish I had planned a longer run b/c it was the absolute best run I've had in a while. Maybe all that pilates had my core more lifted and stronger...I don't know...but it felt good. Today I have a 6 miler on tap (it's SOOOO Windy and cold)...and this weekend I'm scheduled for 16!!! :)
Happy training!!!! Stay warm :sunny:

Hi Everyone,
Just had to tell you that I had the most amazing run today. We ended up doing 8 miles of hill training. One of my friends is running the Mercedes Marathon so she needs hills, hills and more hills. We ran it in 1:16 and I led most of the way home. Ah...don't you just love the good runs? I thought of all of you dealing with snow and horrible weather. um, turn the heat up while your on the treadmill and you have ideal Disney training?
Jen - I have been beaten by someone pushing a stroller. And yes, I was gunning it trying to finish before him. What really annoyed me was he pushed in front of me as we approached the chute. Would it have killed him to give me that second? I wasn't going to bump in and risk tipping the stroller.... yea, even me.
Dana - oh, there are no words.:grouphug: :grouphug:
Take care!

I am so sorry for your loss. It's never easy, and to have this kitty so closely linked with Matthew must hurt deep. The little creatures in our homes give us nothing but love and companionship, and when we lose them it hurts so, but it also shows the love in ourselves to open our lives to them. Please accept our best wishes.
Krista
I'm glad you're in the pool for January. It would have seemed odd to have Steve with a race packet, but not you. I assume you were discrete when you pushed over your friend and torqued her knee  .
Today is day #2 of Martha's new career adventure, and it was to be leftovers for dinner. At the last minute she zips off to a company dinner at one of the truly elegant restaurants in the metro area, so here I am alone eating out of tupperware containers.
Today was also my last teaching day of the semester at the College, and next Tuesday is the last teaching day at the Institute. I'm tired as can be, but surprisingly chipper about it all. The end is in sight!
It also looks like I've done my last outdoor run for a long time. We didn't get much snow Sunday evening, but in New England tradition is was followed by mist, rain, more snow, more rain, sun, then really cold. The roads are fine, but the sidewalks and roadsides are skating rinks. In my youth I could run on that stuff since I was (1) a lot more agile and (2) if I fell I just got back up. Now a fall would likely break something (or everything), so unless the paths clear up it's the indoor track and treadmill for me. I have 18 scheduled for Sunday, and I'm sooooooooo looking forward to doing that on the treadmill.
In the words of Miracle Max, "why don't you just give me a paper cut and pour lemon juice in it?"

I did 3.5 on the TM last night, then walked one mile with the WT tonight looking at holiday lights. Seeing the podiatrist tomorrow to find out what's up with my ankle. If it's soft tissue, that's rehab-able. If joint, well, that's a long-term problem.

Mike...come on down! We're looking at highs in the 80s this weekend if anyone wants to train in that kind of weather!
Cecilia...congrats on your 8 miles!
Speaking of weather, I have a question for y'all. Due to a set of unusual circumstances, DH and I will have 2 weeks off during the holidays. We're thinking of getting in the car and driving until we find snow. DD14 and I have only seen snow twice, WT has never seen it. How far north do you think we'd have to go to find snow in late December?

More north than NC - but it sounds like Craig & Martha might be a guarantee!
Craig - You may want to head down south for that 18 miler. The forecast for Sunday here is 69 and sunny!
Got the long-awaited cortisone shot this afternoon. Ran 3 miles on the TM this morning, then called the dr's office at 8:00 and scheduled the injection. He told me not to run again until Friday, which I will gladly wait for if it means I can run and then not hobble around for 3 days!

 You have only seen snow twice? Wow, do I have stories to tell you over 26.2 miles on January 13th!
Snow can be found in NC mountains, we are about a 10 hour drive northwest of Florida and we would have to drive another 1-2 hours into the Appalachian mountains to find it.
Dana, so sorry about your kitty! I can't imagine what you are feeling especially with the attachment to Matthew.:grouphug:

Mel - I vote for Boston! We could have a mini-wish meet with craig & martha! Somehow I doubt you want to come this far north though. ;)
Kim - yup, that's our house. Chad does an awesome job on the lights and has won our city's decorating contest several times (and placed the other years). I think the best part is that the snowflakes on the roof randomly blink on and off - like it's snowing. In fact, they look very cool right now since our roof is covered in real snow, and they kind of glow underneath that.

Good morning from the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee! Pretty nice place. Sure beats a Hotel 6. :thumbsup2
Here for a funding conference.
Went out for a 4.5 mile run this morning. Four and a half laps around the perimeter.
Craig - I have 18 scheduled for Sunday too. You and Martha come on down to Niceville for your training runs.
I'll try to catch up with everyone later. Time to go talk money. :)

Hey everyone... Well Monday I did 45 minutes on the home TM doing speed walking and some hills. But unfortunately my home TM is biting the dust after 7 years. I am just hoping it holds together until after the marathon!!! Last night I did 40 on the elliptical at the Y.
Craig - I am indoor bound also. Sounds like Wisconsin has snow and ice removal like you do. In fact, many of the side walks here have yet to be cleared from the weekend blizzard. They "say" they will be issuing fines today, but even if the walks are cleared now they will be icey and snow chunky!
Krista -YAHOOOOOO, so glad you are running! :cheer2:
Mel - We have lots of snow in Wisconsin. Come on up!!! Colleen and I can both tell you all about living in the Northwoods with 6 month winters!!! :scared1:
Dana - I am so sorry for your loss!! :grouphug:
OK, work is just crazy busy for me. I need coffee to fuel me up!!! Have a great day all!

Hey Vic, maybe if ya'll met at a Motel 6 vs. the Gaylord Palms there would be a bit more money to fund with  . Are you going to get to see Mickey while you're in town?
Mel - Northern VA would be far enough north to see a dusting of snow this morning but it will be gone tomorrow. We've only had 1 or 2 white Christmas' in the 17 years I've lived here. Better keep on driving past us.
Krista - Leave it to a Steeler's fan to find some sort of nefarious way to sneak in at the last minute. Kind of like Big Ben scrambling 30 yards to beat the Browns in the last minutes :headache: .

Mel
We can show you snow and a good time, but it will take 2.5 days to get here. We don't have much on the ground but it's been cold enough the last few days that it's turning into white ice, which won't melt until March I suspect.
Jackie and Colleen in NC, Stephanie in ARK, and Big Vic in FLA.
We'd love to come down for a comfortable outdoor run this weekend. The funny thing is Martha and I did exactly the same thing 3 years ago this very weekend. It was Martha's first half marathon effort plus I was really fighting calf injuries, so we flew to Orlando on Thursday evening, hung out, did an 11 miler on Saturday, and come home Sunday. When Martha told a few folks we were flying 1300 miles for a long training run they questioned her sanity.
But I ask you, long run on the treadmill, or long run around the Boardwalk and Cresecent Lake, down to the Studios and back, say 5 laps. Which would you choose?

Hi all!
Yes, I know it's been months since I have posted. I have however been lurking or Christa has kept me up to date on everyone. I have been up to my ears in motherhood, and haven't had much time to spend on the boards. It hit me the other day that I am about a month out from the race and I better get my tail back on the boards to rekindle some friendships.
So, I've been training, and I have the first of two full marathons this weekend. It will not be my first but it will be the first time I have ever run a race by myself. Yes I know I won't be by myself, but I'll be running w/o Christa, or my FIL with me. I'm scared to death! :scared:
On that note, I guess I should sign up for a pacing group, if it's not too late, for disney.
I have a question. Is it too late to get a W.I.S.H. shirt? The one I wore for the '06 goofy got moldy because I waited too long to wash it. Sick. I know.
Glad to be back on the boards!

No training to report - I really need to get back out there and get some training in but for now its been cross training by moving furniture and TV's around since we are getting a big TV for each other for Christmas. With that move came a new paint job since the last time I painted the room the TV was too big to move away from the wall so I tried my best to paint behind it and I didn't quite make it and didn't have the same paint to cover it.
Dana - So sorry to hear about your kitty. I know how hard it is just to loose a kitty let alone the attachment you must have had to her because of Matthew. My thoughts are with you. Just thinking about your kitty makes me tear up.

Dana – Thinking of you, sweetie. I am so sorry for your loss.
Krista - - YAY!!
Welcome all new teammates!!! :welcome:
Bree – How wonderful to see you here!!! Lucas is gorgeous!!! I have an extra WISH shirt I’d be glad to loan you, but you’d swim in it! Really looking forward to seeing you in January. Will you be at the Friday Pop meet?
Okay, all about me: I’m sorry I haven’t been around. I think of you all constantly (with a mixed measure of guilt and joy). So much has been going on – my DMIL was visiting for two weeks; the kitchen renovation (started 9/10/07) was finally completed yesterday; normal holiday prep madness is complicated by our plans to be away from before Christmas until right after; any improvement to my spine injury seems to have disappeared and the pain is almost as bad as it was in early October (Monday is the last PT session – 60 days and 22 visits’ worth); Howard is in the middle of final exams, projects & presentations; and as a Mom, I am a bit frazzled because our DD19’s college sophomore exam schedule is in chaos because her marching band may be heading to Chattanooga during finals if her football team wins this weekend and goes to the national championship. Other than that, I have a trial in March that will keep me so busy between now and then and another case that has a huge deadline marathon Monday and on which I will spend many of my waking minutes between now and then so that I can go to marathon weekend with a clear conscience and a clear plate. There’s some other stuff, too, that I won’t trouble you with, but leave it at too many things have prevented a LW since my 16+ the weekend before this past one. UGH!
Since I plan on this being my last full marathon effort, I am hoping to get enough training in in the next few weeks to have an official finish, a finisher’s certificate, and not keep my WISH teammates waiting in the sun at the finish until mid-afternoon. :lmao:

Okay, I think I am all caught up, work has been busy this past week, so it took me a while to read all the posts. Hopefully I didn't miss one! Thanks everyone for all the congrats about the 1/2 marathon entry. Even though I have been running since August (I haven't officially trained for anything since mid-August), it's been sporadic, so I have to jump back into training mode and quickly! I ran 3 miles Monday night, last night I biked on the stationary bike, tonight I am walking on the TM as xt, and tomorrow is 3 miles. I'm not training super hard-core--only 3 running 3 days a week and xt 2 days, I'm hoping this will keep any potential knee injuries at bay. I'm certainly not running this half to set any records, as long as I feel good throughout the race, I'll be happy!
Dana--   I hope you are having a better day today.
Craig--Sorry to hear that you are eating out of Tupperware containers whilst Martha is feasting on some of Boston's best restaurants! Did she at least bring you a doggy bag? ;) I am very jealous that you are coming to the end of your semester and get some time off. Why didn't I become a teacher???
Optimator--I didn't say my friend and I were that close. ;)
Bree--It's good to see you back! I know what you mean about running alone, I ran every training run and race by myself from May 2005-August 2007. The last 3 races we've done, Stephen and I ran together, which was great, by now I have to retrain myself to be a loner!! By the way, Luke is very cute!!
Jen GA--I've never run a race with a stroller, but all the 5K's and 10K's I've done, have asked stroller runners to start at the back of the pack. And yes, I have been passed by a stroller before. Many times, actually.
Mel--You've only seen snow twice in your life!!!! We have about 3 inches on the ground right now, but Ohio weather is crazy, it could be 70 degrees by tomorrow!
Great job to everyone who is getting out there and putting your miles in, I was really impressed with everyone, reading about all the 18 and 16 milers for the full people and 8 and 9 milers for the half. Good luck with training and stay healthy!!!!!
Sorry this is so short, but I really shouldn't be on here at all, I need to learn to DIS from home when I have time! :hourglass

Greetings Racing Team -
It's #32779 checking in! Yes, finally, I got my race packet last night.
Three miles this morning. I kicked up the pace for the last three minutes, running full out as fast as I could. I have to say it was rather exhilarating! :woohoo:
Had the Sears repairman come look at our TM yesterday. We have worn out the motor and it needs to be replaced. He ordered a new one yesterday and of course it will take two weeks to come in. So we should be in good shape just in time to start tapering! The old motor still works but is SO LOUD. Let's hope it doesn't bite the dust before the new one comes in.
Bill - Thanks for the kind words about my "five miles" quote. I really appreciate you guys who have been with me from the start. And, say, we ARE going to see one of those holiday pics, right???
Krista - Oh I'm so sorry for your friend - what kind of knee surgery is she having anyway? You know me and knee surgeries... - but YAY that you are doing it now! Whooo hoooo! :yay:
Dana - Oh Dana.... I'm so sorry...
Well Connected Panda - Whoa! Official recognition from The Penguin. How incredibly cool! :cool2:
Craig - I'm sorry last night was a paper cut for you.
Mel - I'm in southern New York and we didn't have any significant snow fall until January 10th this year. I can't guarantee any snow but I'll keep you posted. I'm a long long way from you though.
Bree - Hi! Welcome back!!!! We keep bugging Christa about you. Hee hee.

I'll losen my shoes and see if that helps w/ the numbness. If not, I may try to see if Fleet Feet will replace them w/ the WIDE.
Panda--Thanks for your help! ;) Glad you paw is feeling better!!!
Dana--So sorry to hear about your kitty!
Judy--Yippeee!!! Glad your packet finally came in!
That's all for now!

My 8 year old DD has seen man-made snow (as in blowing ice from a truck- loses something, doesn't it?!) but never the real stuff. She's begging to see real snow! I don't think she'd last 10 minutes...
I ran 5 miles yesterday without the stroller! My Nike+ said I finished in a little over 41 minutes, but I think it's way off (which is why I have a Garmin coming in the mail- Happy early Birthday to me!) I was feeling pretty happy until Harry's little cough turned into something vaguely flu-like. (Did I mention one of the girls at DD's b-day party said she'd thrown up that morning?) So now I have Harry at the office, destroying everything. I did get my flu shot, so maybe I'll survive, but I'm basically just waiting to be sick as a dog in about 12 hours. Which is worse- getting sick out of the blue or just waiting for it to hit?! :scared1::rolleyes1
Oh well, at least it's not right before Disney!

Hi guys, I have been off the boards for a few days....work has totally taken over. I ran my back to back runs on Thursday and Friday, went to Fit Ball on Monday and that has been it. I probably won't get any runs in during this week at all thanks to work, but I should be back at it Saturday and Sunday.
Dana, tons of hugs and PD for you. I know how much animals mean, so my thoughts are with you.:grouphug:

Hi Stacie! - I think that is a GREAT idea to talk to Fleet Feet and see if they can help you out with the sneaker issue. It may be a simple fix and wow wouldn't that make a big difference for those runs!!! Way to go on the XT girl! Keep it up...you're going to do awesome in WDW at the 5K. :thumbsup2
Treadmill Runners: :worship: I have NO CLUE how you guys do it. I wasn't meant for the treadie. I opted for the 20 plus MPH winds and 20 degree temps yesterday. Walked out of my pilates class and stared down the row of 10 treadmills. Stared out the window and saw the trees whipping....stared at the treadmills....drove home and hit the road. Then hit the trail. Then ran away from the hunters :scared1: . Managed to NOT spit into my neck warmer this time:thumbsup2 (don't ask). And managed a decent pace pushing up against the winds. Unfortunately the hunters sort of blocked my way...and although I'm a pretty unflappable runner....I decided not to chance death or at least a nasty gunshot wound...and only got 5 out of my scheduled 6 miles. :confused3
Today I'm planning on doing some pilates on my own and hit the ski-machine for 40 minutes. Somebody please kick my butt to get my cardio XT in. I'm such the slacker! Missed 2 hours last month of the additional cardio ...hate machines. Can't wait for that biking weather again! :rolleyes1 .

Jen, congrats on the Garmin. I was constantly recalibrating my Nike+ and I would think it was right, but then I got the Garmin and it was always way off. I kept up with both for awhile, but finally just quit using the Nike+. It was really off so I felt like there was no point. :confused3
DH played me some really funny Nike+ video spoof the other day. I'll have to ask him for the link. It really cracked me up. If you've used it before you would find it very funny!

It always seems that my real life activities get in the way of my running goals...my week is just so busy and no time to rest up so my plan is just to go out and leave it on the race course. I will do my best.
Dana - So sorry! I WISH I had the words to help you feel better.
Jen Ga - I was passed by a guy pushing a stroller with 3 children in it! It had started to thunder and he started booking it!

I only had to run 2 miles today and I was in pain. After I got home I saw I had an average pace of 10:09, which is very fast for me. I guess I was trying too hard. I need to watch my Garmin more. Darn it! Chad's blue, so who am I going to kiss then?
I doubt Johnny Goo is running! :rotfl:
I told Chad he could hang back in another corral and he looked at me like I was nuts.
I swear the exercise gods have it in for me!
Just now, took a short nap, then got up & immediately into my work out clothes.
Zack has his gym class and I can do 3 miles while he is in class.
Turns out Zack doesn't want to wake up from his nap (and since I also have these issues, I understand).
I finally get him up, out the door, into the car & off we go.
About 1/4 mile from home, he starts with the "i have to pee" business.
Didn't have to go when we were home, now he's bouncing around like a maniac in his booster seat.
So, back home we go.
And no class for us since we were already running a little late. :sad2:
I am just so aggravated right now! :scared:

Hi! I don't know if I'm in the right place but I'm thinking of running the Disneyland Half Marathon in 2008. I have never run anything in my life but since Labor Day I have started an exercise routine and started eating right and have lost 12 pounds. I think if I start training now then this could become a reality and not just a dream. I guess what I want is to chat with people who have run the Disneyland (or World) Half Marathon and to see how it went. I would also like to get to know people who will be running the 2008 Disneyland Half Marathon.

OK. Just to update, things have been getting a little better with the back, but I am still having problems with it. As a result, most of my training since late October has been strength training and cardio on a recumbant bike or eliptical machine. Given that the half marathon is in a little over five weeks and I don't even have a walking base to rely upon, I have decided to abandon attempting the half in 2008 so as not to risk further or new injuries (and to help out the EMTs as if I were to pass out, it would probably take most of them to move me and that would prevent them from giving their undivided attention to the Queen ;) ).
I do plan to continue trying to get and stay healthy though and to participate in half and full marathons in the future, including WDW in 2009 (Goofy?). Its just taking my body longer to adjust/correct itself than I hoped. I'll still be here to keep you all honest and to keep Penguin-Pal Packet-Deprived Pussin' Panda in line though. I greatly appreciate all the encouragement and support the WISH team has extended me thus far and I will see you guys at start and finish lines somewhere in the near future.

Good news and bad from the podiatrist today. My ankle that gave me so much trouble after 16 and 18 miles is afflicted with a tarsal coalition, possibly something I was born with (explains why it's been a problem since middle school). He said that I shouldn't be able to run half marathons (or fulls) at all. Basically one of the joints has no space, it's just bone on bone and there's something, either bone or soft tissue, that's tethering the two bones together which gives me somewhat limited range of motion in that foot. He recommended ibuprofen an hour before a run, heat and ice afterward. Worst case, down the road, arthritis and surgery to release the tethered parts. Right now, he's not recommending anything specific since I'm already doing more than I should be able to. He said the mileage I'm hitting now may just be the limit of what I'm going to be able to do with this ankle. He did add an extra cushion layer on my orthotics to help.
Weird thing is, when I saw his partner in Jan 2005, nothing was mentioned. I'm kinda glad it either wasn't picked up or was ignored. That visit was the one I made when I started training for my first WDW half...if they had told me then that I shouldn't (or wouldn't) be able to do the half, I might have believed them and given up before I ever got started. While I wanted to know what has been wrong with my ankle, I'm not sure what to do with the information. Do I skip the 22 miler or do I keep it in the mix to build up to the 26.2 more slowly? I guess I'm kinda down about the whole idea...I was really hoping for some kind of soft tissue injury that I could rehab, not something that's likely to get worse over time.
Bill...sorry to hear you won't be doing the half this year, but avoiding future injury is always a good idea. Could we still convince you to come hangout with the team?
Vic...I've been meaning to mention to you...is the foot pain you're having on the bottoms of your feet? I had that really bad this year, especially after the WDW half. My feet felt so tender that I could hardly walk on them. It's gotten a LOT better since I got new cushioned shoes (switched from Saucony back to ASICs).
Kristi...your day reminded me of last year when we went out and got a fancy jogging stroller. I tried taking the WT out, but with the constant stopping to retrieve lost toys, stopping for a drink, needing to go potty about 10 min after leaving, whining about going home, etc...I only used it a couple times.
Bree!...great to see you back!
Thanks for all the snow advice. Looks like it will be a bit too far to drive to see snow so we'll have to find something else exciting to do.

NEPats Bill, I am so sorry to hear of your news. I do WISH as Mel said that maybe you are still able to come in January? That would be such fun to get to visit with you. We could sure use you to cheer us along to.
Mel, oh no! I don't know how to react to the info the doc gave. Maybe just keep running, running, running. I am glad that it was not offered to you in the beginning too. I would never have had the chance go get to meet and know a wonderful person.
Shan, I loved that Nike+ spoof!
Kristi, sorry about your missed w/o hope you had some good time after all with DS.
I'd tip the massuese. I see that other event participants offer tips at the free massage offerings.
I've only gone back a little so I don't know what everyone else is doing this week. I managed a decent gym w/o and yup even on that dreaded TM. I've got an appointment tomorrow at our local surgery center for an endoscopy with dilitation, third time the charm I'm WISHing. It looks like I will be doing my LRs 9/18 on the TM this weekend. I may be WISHing for a meltdown and may see about running on the roads in the developments around here if I feel safe, i.e. no ice. Lots of snow and I just know it won't melt before the weekend. Sigh. I guess it's pack a picnic, and movies, and books, and magazines, and ipods and...

Good morning WISH team. Here is my attempt to keep up on this thread!
Amy: I am with you, outside is where it is at. I only use the TM for shorter runs under 5 miles. I do use the elliptical and the bike on XT cardio days though. I skate or race ski during the winter months to keep up my cardio and it is great for the butt. We joke about the song with the butt big enough to set a cup on her booty. Yep, that's us skiers! I run during hunting season too. Look like a little orange streak!! Oh, and I have spit in my neck warmer before too so don't feel alone.
Jen: I found my Nike+ to be off no matter how many times I calibrated it. The distance that I knew was 1 mile was only about .75 on the Nike+ so I abandoned it and bought a Garmin. It was the best thing I ever did for my workouts.
Motoxprincess and Bree: :welcome: (I have to welcome Bree cuz I have not met her yet!!)
NEBill: Sorry to hear you have to abandon ship. I hope you do stay well during 2008 and will join us for Goofy 09. I can't wait!!!!
I am on for a 40 minute run which will be an all out ski-for-all for me. The Garmin has been awesome as for the first time in 15 years, I can track the mileage that I do on the trails. We estimate that we have 15 miles total of trails but I guess that will have to be checked!!
Speed of healing to anyone sick/injured and have a great day everyone!!!!!!!!!

I've got an appointment tomorrow at our local surgery center for an endoscopy with dilitation, third time the charm I'm WISHing.I thought I was the only one who got to do this kind of fun stuff all the time? ;)
Actually, I haven't had an endoscopy or dilitation in a couple years (knock on wood).
I hope things go well for you today, Lily!
I have 4 miles planned for today. I am hoping I can get them done before I pick Zack up at school. I am not chancing him messing me up today! :rotfl:
Totally OT - remember my niece Molly & her sneaker idea from American Inventor? Well, they got a call from the head of Puma in Germany this week! He is very interested in Molly's idea and wants to meet with them when he comes to Boston in a few weeks. He said he was planning the fall line now and wanted to pursue this idea. Please keep your fingers crossed for Miss Molly!

Taking it easy this week since I have a race Saturday. I ran a "hard" short run Monday, and have opted to do nothing the rest of the week. This game plan has worked for me in the past. If it doesn't work this time around I'll know better the week of the disney race. Bought all my gu (I call it flavored snot) for the race yesterday, and have basically planned what I'm wearing. They are calling for a high of 64 Saturday. Warmer than usual for
december but I can't say I'm upset about that. For me that means, less layers, and less sweaty clothing up against me. Im still way nervous, but I guess I can't be any more trained than I am, so I'll just go out there and do the best i can do for that day.
until later,

Bree: "liquid snot" :lmao: I told my DD my first GU tasted like something I swallow during an allergy attack. :rotfl2: And, after reading the posts by Christa and yourself, I think you will be more than fine this weekend.
Oh, and I do the same thing on the TM, run really fast and get it over with. Last week, the lady on the TM beside me kept leaning over to see what my settings were and stepped onto the side of my TM!!! :scared1: Nothing like bringing you out of the zone in a big fat hurry. I jumped so bad that my iPod fell off the rack and onto the belt and smashed against the wall. Thankfully, the 2nd generation is tough!!!!!!!:rolleyes1

Hi Everyone-
Another beautiful but cold day to run. Even better is that Saturday's 18 miler will be in near perfect conditions: Clear skies and low 50s at the start warming to the high 60s by the finsh. I won't be able to blame the weather for any problems this week!
Sorry to brag when so many of you are staring at a grey or brown sludge all over the sidewalks. I do feel for you. We need a little treadmill smilie.....
Cam - Did I get this right, You had your MIL visiting during a kitchen remodel? Wow! That by itself would have sent me over the edge!
Bree- Good Luck!
Bill- Sorry to hear you are still having so much trouble. I hope that you heal quickly and are back out there (pain free) in no time.
Shan - Loved the Nike+ spoof. That was me when I first started running.
Mel- So you go to the Dr to get some relief from ankle pain and he tells you that based on your ankle, you shouldn't be able to run at all?! It will be interesting to see how that effects your pain management. You are one tough cookie thats for sure.
Jen - I am already jealous of your garmin! Just yesterday, I was thinking I had done my 10 miler super fast only to realize that I had only run 9.5 miles.
Have a great day all! Here is some sunshine for you (we have had plenty):sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Morning all! Got 4.3 in yesterday on the dreaded TM, in around 40:00. 5 min warmup and cooldown and 30:00 at marathon pace. Headed back to the gym today for a similar workout.
Craig--I don't think that trip was crazy at all--but this comes from the family where spur of the moment crazy travel is the norm. DH right now is wanting to do a "mileage run"--flying from airport to airport all over the country to rack up some more frequent flier miles. But I think I am going to resend my invite for you and Martha to come run here this weekend. Just saw the weather report and 80% chance of rain on Sunday. Yes, I'll be outside in it, but wouldn't want to subject ya'll to that;)
Cam--I am so sorry to hear that your back pain is still not any better. Sending lots of PD and prayers your way for healing!:grouphug:
Okay, gotta get Emma ready for school and me for the gym. Have a great Thursday all!

Good Morning All!
Bill--So sorry to hear of your injuries!!! Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Mel--Sorry to hear about your ankle! ouch!
Bree--What a cutie! How old is he? I'm in NC too! About 45 min East of Raleigh, but we work in Cary. Hope your race goes well this weekend!
Today's update... Matt went to play basketball last night so I opted for the gym and TM. It was C25K Week 8, wait no, Week 7??? I don't remember! lol! I was supposed to run 28 min non-stop. I borrowed Matt's MP3 player and started off to Low Rider... After my 5 min warm-up at 3.4 I start my jog at 4.3. I'm feeling great the first 5 min! Then my energy level is like a roller coaster! ugh! If I can barely make it 5 min feeling good how will I ever make it for 5 miles if I decide to take on a half marathon! At one point, my lower back started hurting then I got this really bad cramp/side stitch and I just wanted to stop. But, NO! I was bound (ok, not really, If I was actually bound, I could have been jogging huh?) and determined to do the full 28 min! I pushed through! I did hop to the sides a few times for some H20, but that was just a few seconds so I'm not counting that! When I reached my 28 min of jogging, I slowed back down to 3.4 to finish out my cool down. I noticed I had burned 360 cals and thought, what the heck, I'm going to go until I get 400! So, the result... I completed the training and did 2.7 miles, 42 min and burned 400 cal! Overall, pretty successful and I felt great after! :thumbsup2 I find that I'm speedier on the TM than outside. I like outside, but maybe I need to TM it some to work on my speed??? :confused3
So, that's all for me!
:wizard: and  to all those nursing injuries!
Happy training!

Greetings all.
Caution! I'm cranky and crabby. I'm dead tired and not feeling well. I think I might have a bit of a fever, but I love my job so much I have come in. :headache: I did not train this morning which makes me doubly cranky. So now I'm going to be a witch all day. My employees better steer clear.
Kristi - Oh you poor thing. Geez. Well, perhaps we can arrange for Johnny to be a pacer in the Half. Then we KNOW you'll be Miss Speedy! You go Molly! How cool is that?!?!? :thumbsup2
MotoXPrincess99 - :wlecome: You certainly are in the right place.
NEPatBill - Ohhhh....OK I'm trying to say the right thing here because I know you're doing what's best, but geez, what a bummer for you. Oy! You're a stronger man than I...wait...ok, scratch that....I don't know if I could still go and watch everybody if I wasn't doing it. Thanks for being so considerate and not taking up all the EMTs, just in case. But I really don't plan on passing out this time. But listen, Big Green Man, as Jeanne called you....:lmao: Can we make you our Official Cheerleader? :yay: Are you still coming thought? I'd be very glad to see you, although I realize that sentiment does not make up for not doing the race. OK I should shut up now because I am probably not helping. :upsidedow OK, I'll go bug Dave instead.
Packet Deprived Panda - I don't know if I ever told you this, but in true YARC tradition.....Three years ago when we bought our house I had to come up with a name for the stable. I was always partial to Windy River Farms but since it's only occasionally windy, we have a pond, not a river and technically it's not a farm, that didn't work. Then one day it dawned on me...perfect! I named it "Relatively Stable". :upsidedow
Oh Mel - I'm sorry to hear about this tarsal situation, but in a way I guess it's good to know exactly what's going on. I don't know what to tell you about the 22 miler. Maybe somebody with more mileage behind them can give you some advice. Oh Mel...

Morning Team Mates:
Thank you for all your kind words (so far ;)). Currently, my plans are to start from square one again with the walking and slowly build up distance (over the upcoming months). I figure if I do this slowly (being the expert in distance events and body mechanics that I am), while keeping the cardio XT, strength training and core exercises going, I should be able to develop some type of base I can fall back on if necessary.
I have decided not to travel down for the marathon this year. Although I would love another solo trip to WDW, as well as to see the WISH team again and meet those I have yet to meet in person, with all the things going on with the kids, I don't think I would be comfortable nor would it be fair to my family if I am not going to be participating in the actual events. My wife and I have made some plans already to get the kids where they need to be that weekend (i.e., one swimming in Boston, another doing gymnastics in western Massachusetts, another having local riding lessons and two of them having a basketball game (on which team I am the asistant coach)), but I think my chauferring skills will probably make it easier for all concerned. Plus, I'll save my DVC points and air miles for something else I can actually do (ToT 13K in 2008?).
In the meantime, I am looking at other possible half or full marathons in my area (I need a qualifying time for Boston, right ;)) and hope to maybe do a couple of those later in 2008 so as to be prepared for "To 39.3 Miles ... And Beyond" in January 2009. (or at least some number of miles over 13.)

Judy darlin, you are beautiful, you have a wonderful witty personality, a huge heart, you are kind and caring, you have a husband who loves you and a WISH team that adores you. So is life really so bad? But then god gave us co-workers to torment, so give them heck but with a smile and maybe a wicked little laugh.
I enjoyed the treadmill at the health club since it's 27 degrees out. Since according to Bill I'm a wussy Panda. But Bill dear, sore foot or not a Goofy I will go in January.
I have pretty much decided to, at least for a while, train toward being a long distance endurance walker, instead of a short distance fast racer. Erica and I can do the long ones together and that makes them so much more special than a short race that I do without her.

I don't recall ever referring to you, an esteemed US military veteran and senior olympiad athlete, as a "wussy." (Although I did wonder what your airforce buddies would think of the Mission Space barf bag photo.) The "Pussin'" refers to your dejected state of being packet-less. Come to think of it, are you sure you'll be doing the Goofy? What are your race numbers? I have a half marathon number I'll sell you if you need it. ;)

I'll still be here to keep you all honest and to keep my hero and mentor Penguin-Pal Packet-Deprived Pussin' Panda in line though. I greatly appreciate all the encouragement and support the WISH team has extended me thus far and I will see you guys at start and finish lines somewhere in the near future. By then I may have my unbearable desire to cow tip satisfied
You made the right decision Bill, the possible damage to your weakened body could set you back even more. Better to hold off till the body is ready.

Hey kids-
W/LTO yesterday, but managed to get in a quick two miles. Better than nothing! Wore my running pants for the first time. They were fine, but hot. I laugh at all you cold weather people, but if it's cold at Disney, I may very well be wearing my cold weather stuff for the first time... nothing like fear of the unknown chafing potential...:scared1:
Shan- I didn't get a chance to give you the pep talk before your 4 miler today. I knew you could do it! I was stuck on the first two miles for the longest time. Dave said the first two miles are hard because you're just warming up. Now I try to remind myself that I feel fine at mile 3 or so, I just have to get past that pesky 2 mile barricade! Nike+ video was really funny!
Stacie- congrats on making it so far. I loved the TM at first, but now find it much easier to run outside. You're doing great on your plan!
Bill- we'll miss you at the marathon, but you are being very responsible! Don't be thinking ToT 08 though- you're forgetting Minnie in May!
Panda Dave- how very advanced of you to be choosing between fast short distances and slower long ones. ;) I'm aiming for a sort of fast plod. Oh, with lots of pictures. It's a very technical plan. :rolleyes1 Sometimes when Harry's in a mood and I have to stop a bunch I tell myself I'm just going to be really good at all the starting and stopping when I see characters!
Lisa- My Garmin isn't here yet. That whole 1 mile on the Nike+ records as .75 is what pushed me over the edge. In theory, my 20 miler could have been a lot longer! No wonder it hurt! Or, it could have been a lot shorter... Maybe it didn't hurt enough and I don't even know it! Of course, I don't have a clue how to work the Garmin yet... I'm hoping it will be reasonably obvious (for the basics). Hey- good job not flying off the back of the TM after your iPod!
Judy- hope you feel better.
Bree- ok, so my 8 year old daughter steals my Sportsbeans, my 20 month old son has developed a taste for ShotBloks (don't ask), and the only thing I have that no one will touch would be gels, which I now think of as "liquid snot." As if they weren't hard enough to face before I had such a descriptive image... Thank you very much! :rotfl: (Your bambino is precious, by the way!)
Cam- I'm so sorry you still hurt!
Mel- the ankle thing sounds ugly. You must be really, really tough! ;)
Lily- good luck with the endoscopy. I'm impressed you're still thinking about your LRs. I took off a week for a cold.:rolleyes1
Got to look busy now (those smilies on the screen get me busted everytime!)

Thank you for the links Judy. I don't know about the Ridgefield half at present. If they keep it the same weekend, it would be the week before the Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon. Obviously I am going to see how I am doing and where I am, but as of now my thinking is to maybe shoot for the Boston Race to Remember (a half marathon in Downtown Boston) the end of May (which gives me 5+ months to train) and possibly the Hartford Marathon or Half the second weekend in October. I did want Disney to be my first event (which i guess it was via the Tower of Terror), but I don't necessarily want to set my "big" goal 13 months away. Thus, I need to think about whether I sign up for the 2009 WDW Marathon (and shoot to do the Hartford half) as my first marathon, or I could just be Goofy for my first WDW marathon weekend. So much to think about.

PatsBill - Sorry to hear that you won't be with us in January. I admire you to be able to say that after setting it as a goal. I think I would wind up doing one sick and getting worse rather than not participate. We will definately miss you but wish you the best in your training. Minnie is in May and it would be a nice in between distance. Besides you can come and help harass, keep in line, Mr. Packet Deprived Panda. That way you get the Disney race, smaller distance and all the fun.
Panda - With all the mischeif going on around you and you accusing Robert of having inside contacts at Disney, have you actually asked if he had your packet pulled just to harass you. :lmao:
Judy - Hope your day gets better.
Mel - Well at least they found the problem. Just make sure you don't hit the doctor with your Mickey after he tells you that you shouldn't be able to do it. :rolleyes1
Craig and other northerners - Our weather is supposed to be from low 60's to upper 70's this weekend with no rain. Any one needing a nice place for a long run can come on down.
Vic - Did your group pay to let you see the ICE exhibit while at the hotel. I can't justify spending that much just to see some ice in different shapes.

What should an EQ do? Shorts or tights?
I am thinking to wear my running skirt and put some aweful sweatpants under it....then I can throw them away at the rest stop....O they are BAD...I was going to bring them for WDW this past year, but well...it was HOT...

Christa: I just went out and race skiied in 25 degrees with just tights, a LS tech shirt with a fleece lined windbreaker. I have heavier tights for the below freezing temps. I got mine from Sahalie.com and they call them winter trainer tights (I guess for a reason). When I run here in the fall, I put on my lighter tights if it is between 35-40 degrees to start. My legs don't usually get cold (even when I ski) but I don't think I would want shorts or a skirt either. I know I rambled a bit, but I hope it was helpful!! :upsidedow I guess since I just came back in from skiing, I can blame it on brain freeze???? :scared:
Anyhoo, today I went skate skiing with my 2 pups, a terrier mix and an Irish Wolfhound mix. The IW is just barely a year and this is his first time skiing. He only tried to kill me once which I think is a record for a new dog around here. We have about 15 inches and he decides to go "off roading" and look at the little dog like "well...come on". It was pretty funny. It is 25 degrees, sun shining and a very slight breeze. I have to say it was most beautiful and totally peaceful in the woods. If they would plow my road, I could run....:rolleyes1
Oh, and Bill, we would LOVE to have you do Minnie with us in May instead of the Boston thing!! Really, we would!!!!

I called Fleet Feet to explain the numbness...is there anything they can do. The girl says No. They have the 30 days policy, but since I've had them longer, they can't really do anything but give me a $10 coupon toward another pair. Now, I understand the policy, but I guess I was hoping they would be nice. :sad2: No such luck. I can't afford to pay another $100+ for a pair of shoes. These still look brand new! So, I guess I'll continue to try to losen them and hope my feet don't continue to get numb!!! ugh!

Stacie -
Try and talk to the owner/manager of the Fleet Feet. We have a store near us and buy all our running shoes there. We had one of the employees tell us that you couldn't return shoes without the box and receipt. The owner said there was no such policy. Lynne got a pair of shoes that caused to legs to hurt every time she ran in them. I talked to Ed (the owner) and he said to bring them back even though the had been owned for more than a month and were slightly dirty. Ed's thinking a happy customer is a repeat customer and that they are the ones that fitted you to the shoe. You can't tell how a shoe will perform just by walking around the store. You have to wear them in real training situations.
Hope this helps and you get some satisfaction from the store.

I've finally come back to the real world. Procedure went well and tomorrow will be a better day.
NEBill, I really like the idea of a Minnie WDW weekend. You are smart in knowing when to fold 'em and you certainly will be missed in January. Keep at it and don't give in.
Christa, I think your idea of toss away sweats will work. As the temp climbs and if you sweat at all, you will be good whenever you feel you are ready to toss those.
Bree, I can't wait to see your little one! His pic is so cute.
Stacie, I'd recommend doing the same thing Kathy suggested. The Fleet Feet I spend all my running money took my shoes back, no questions and no inserts since I stopped there after my run with my orthotics. Gave me another pair, I left the store wearing them and never hesitated at all. Of course I continue to spend mostly all my running/walking $ there and always recommend them to anyone I can.
Oh and guess what came in the mail today!!!!! I got my packet! :dance3:

Still no packet for me. I think Disney has flagged my name because I have gone back and verified my entry too many times.
Judy - Relatively Stable! I love it.
Christa - I would do the throw away sweats with those temps. Also see if the expo has those throw away paper suits. I have heard they work well for those early morning chilly starts. They were $5 at the Country Music Marathon.
Stacie - I had some problems with my shoes after about 200 miles. I went to Fleet feet and they stretched the shoes - problem solved. They should have a machine to stretch the shoes there. Also, try lacing the shoes differently, The guy at Fleet Feet laced mine in this funky way and it really helped. I think the directions are in Runners World this month.

Greetings from the wettest drought ridden country in the world - yes, it's raining AGAIN in Australia, and it has been all week, except now the weather gods have brought 25+ temps and lightning storms along for the ride, I have to keep stopping work as it's I'm on the 14th floor, sit right by the window and the flashing looks a bit near!!!.
What do you reckon my chances are of getting my 2hrs/4hrs in this weekend without screaming like a big girl at some point. Trainers are rubber soled aren't they!
So, all good here - just planning our trip (22 days till we fly). Anyone know a nice - but not ridiculously priced hotel - in Miami to stay in - not on South Beach (it makes me feel fat!) but somewhere around Sunny Isles/Adventura - thinking of taking an overnight when we're in Orlando so Tim can go to another hockey game (he's doing the Kings, The Ducks, The Lightning(x2) and now the Panthers in three weeks!). Littlegreydonkey: We stayed at the Newport Beachside Hotel a few years ago. No frills but they have a GREAT beachfront and there is a heated pool and a playground for kids. The rooms were comfortable and quiet. It has a little strip mall across the street and some other stores up the road for supplies. It is just a little peanut of a hotel in between 2 giant condo buildings. We enjoyed our stay there very much. Eat out on the pier, the burgers are great!!
I am up for 30 minutes of XT which I think we have all figured out right now is skiing. Then some easy weights at home. We are attending a "bus party" tonight where they are renting a tour bus, picking us all up and toting us around to the local bars for the evening. Makes for a late night and a long day tomorrow. Gives new meaning to beer laps too!!
Christa: I guess I led you astray with the running pants, sorry. I would never be able to toss my sweats at a rest stop as something would go horribly wrong for me but you are a more seasoned runner and I am sure you can pull it off (literally)!!
Have a great day training all and I hope those packet show up soon!!!!

Hi Bill, yes I do tend to stir the pot occassionally not so you would notice though. I don't think Robert would have both our packets pulled, he doesn't have his either. Maybe the Disney "sanity police" remember us from the last trip.
Packetless Panda:sad2:
But see that is the sheer genius of it. He has his pulled as well to throw any suspicion that he is the one behind it. This way he has his packet waiting for him marathon weekend or has his secretly sent to him while you are still waiting for yours.
Another option is Disney heard you were going by Panda and sent the packet to the San Diego or National Zoo (maybe Chicago but I don't know) since those are the only places in the US that Pandas currently reside.
Hope it comes soon.

Taking my shoes back and asking for a different pair made all the difference in the world for me. I literally felt like my feet were gonna break in the Mizunos, switched to the Saucony and haven't had the first problem.
They also laced my shoes differently at the store. I have a somewhat high arch and they laced them so the top of my foot is skipped over.
Since we're talking about shoes, do you guys wash them? And do you wear your running shoes only when you run? I have become super sensitive to the way my feet feel after my recent experience and I'm wondering if I should get another good pair of shoes to wear when not running or just use my old pair? (Course, the support is worn down...) :confused3
I've always been a flip flop kinda girl - I walk around barefoot most of the time and like my Crocs. Now I'm starting to worry about my feet.

Shan, I am a barefoot girl too. I am pretty anti-shoe as a matter of fact and so is DS6. We joke about having "Fred Flinstone" feet. :lmao: I wear my last pair of running shoes for my kick arounds and donate the rest to One World Running. I NEVER wear my current running shoes for anything but running. I even have a pair with less arch support in them (Nike) for the elliptical/bike and lifting at the gym. This is what works for me but I am curious to see what others do also. :surfweb:

I think the question is "do your legs get cold?"
I'm built oddly (no comment Judy pirate: ) as my legs never get cold during athletic activity, but my upper body does, especially my hands. Given it will be cold at the start but warm up a lot, on the legs I would wear the junky-est sweats in the world into the corrals over my shorts and toss the sweats just before the start. The legs will be chilly for a mile or so but once the engine fires up they'll be plenty warm.
I'd wear 1 layer of thin long sleeve underarmor, plus another layer for the torso only, and a pair of super cheapie gloves. I find that layering works in all types of temps for the torso, and I toss the gloves when my hands and the temps are warm enough.
Have fun and run fast.

Greetings Race Team -
Today is a much better day! I feel like a new woman! :thumbsup2 So whatever I was fighting is gone. I feel much better.
I did three miles this morning. But may I just say, even in our house....darn it was cold! :cold: I'm thinking I might be doing nine miles on the TM tomorrow. Not just because of the cold but because we are supposed to get some mixed precip this evening and it might be messy tomorrow. I guess I'll just see what happens. I don't think I have enough movies for nine miles!
In honor of Pearl Harbor Day I will tell you a little story.....When I was 19 (not all that long ago  ) I went to Hawaii by myself. Now, today that would not seem like such a big deal I suppose, but back then, for a very small town girl like me, that was a huge deal! But I digress...Anyway, my mother was very patriotic and really wanted me to go visit the Arizona Memorial. So I said I would. As we were landing in Honolulu the pilot told us to look out the window and we could see the Arizona. So I looked down and got to see it from the air. Which was a good thing. Since as it turned out, the memorial was closed for renovations the week I was there. Figures. Oh well. Some day when we go to Hawaii to do the Ironman.....Ha ha ha! :lmao:
Cecilia - Yea, I figured that name was appropriate! Now, even more so! ;)
Lily - Oh I'm glad everything went well. And you got your packet to boot! YAY! :yay:
Shan - I never wear my running shoes unless I'm training or racing. :goodvibes
Craig - Now what would make you think I would say anything???? :p
OK, it is suspiciously quiet on the Events board. Where is everyone???? :confused3

Judy My Dear
Yes, today is Pearl Harbor day. When you plan your visit to the Arizona Memorial, let us know, we'll gladly come too.
Martha and I were there in May of 2004 (I've had Lesley there since then as well). To step onto the structure and look into the tomb of 1000 very young Americans is overwhelming. The most amazing part to me was a small marble block to the left of the wall listing the sailors killed in the attack. This block listed the names of survivors, who upon passing had their remains cremated and returned to the Arizona by divers so they could lie with their shipmates.
I felt it was appropriate to take off my hat as a gesture to the dead, and a ranger from the park service saw this and came over to me.
The flag goes up and back down every hour over the Arizona, and he asked if I would like to perform the honors. I graciously accepted his offer, and did my best to run the colors up, back down, and then fold them with the ranger.
All in all, a most memorable first visit to the USS Arizona.

LOL - That is my answer too Kristi. I have felt like such a slacker since I haven't done ANY training lately. Then again I am not doing a marathon (or 2) in the next month. I really really want to get back out there and get started on training again but LTO and I never fit it in. :confused3

Craig--that is exactly, to a tee, what I would wear in those conditions too. I must be built oddly as well (no comments, Krista ;) ) because my legs are never cold during exercise, either. I do try to put that extra wind-breaking layer on the torso as well.

Christa- For the cold LRs, I've liked layering a S/S shirt under a L/S shirt with shorts. BUT, I was waiting outside for my child's bus forever today in about 50 degree weather and I was cold in my jeans, light sweater and heavy fleece jacket. I actually started thinking about you and wanting to tell you to be careful about the wait at the start- I was cold in just a few minutes!
Brace yourselves- I'm having a panic moment:
I got a postcard for the half I'm doing in Jacksonville next weekend. I'm starting to get nervous. I don't know how fast I should go, I don't know what I want to bring as far as hydration (I'm thinking about using my handheld bottle instead of my belt), and I'm scared I'm going to be plowed down by the runners trying to qualify in the full for Boston. (I'll start near the back, but it's an out and back course so I think they could still plow me down on the last stretch- might need to study the map). Most importantly, I don't have my WISH peeps to sit by- what if I end up next to some pompous trash talking types!? So not in my comfort zone...:rolleyes1
Where's Sunny to tell me I need my towel?;)
Training wise, not so much to report. May do a 5k with Harry tomorrow if we don't go out of town. If we run it, I'm just going to get in the back and see what happens. Is it pathetic that I want to see what the T-shirt looks like before I bother to go over and sign up? I'd just like to know if it's worth the trouble... :rotfl:
Oh- shoe question. I'm now neurotic about not wearing my running shoes except for running. It helps me keep up with the mileage. My knees were hurting awhile back and I finally realized my shoes had a crazy number of miles on them between running and lots of walking- they didn't look bad, so I just didn't think about it. Got rid of them and started paying a bit more attention!

I know I am jumping the gun here, but...
I just started training in September for the Jan 5K. I've NEVER run/jogged in my LIFE before. I'm already thinking..."What's next" When I'm done w/ the 5K. Where do I go from there?
For you seasoned Long Distance competitors. Do you think it would be too soon to attempt the 15K at the Minnie in May? I've heard that you need to have "base" miles which I really don't have. And again, i'm not that fit. I can barely do my C25K plan. Should I just keep training and gradually adding miles and start to seriously train in the fall for January 2009 half instead?
I don't want to overstress my body and then get all discouraged and give up, but I feel like I need something else to strive for...
Opinions???

Afternoon teammates. Nothing to report from me from today (unless we're counting shopping as xtraining). Did 35 min. at marathon pace on Thurs. felt good--now if I can just translate that into 4hrs at the same pace life will be grand!
Christa--I think you've gotten great advice about the weather/what to wear. My legs rarely get cold either--as long as my hands and ears are covered, shorts and ss shirt will do for me. I was lucky at the LR marathon when it was in the 30s at the start, that DH wasn't running. So, right before the start I gave him all my extra layers, and warmed up in no time. Could've been the nerves of the race, or maybe the coffee I spilled on me that helped as well. Good luck this weekend--excited to hear how things go!
JenGa--Take a deep breath! You will do great!
Stacie--I also think you'd be fine. The Minnie is a great race to train for!
Okay, back to cleaning this pig sty we live in. Good luck with LR/LW and races this weekend!

I wouldn't call myself seasoned or a long distance competitor (nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night - :lmao: ) but I just have to say - NO - its not too soon to attempt the 15k in May. I started running/jogging/walking (I do a combination of the 3) in June (I did run/walk for 3 months the previous year and then quit.) before that I had never really done any running except in middle school and that wasn't very good either. I was able to finish the TOT 13k in what I consider a reasonable time (even though I wish it could have been closer to Ryan Hall's times but that is another story :rolleyes1 - 15 miles in 1:15)
So yes I think its a reasonable to goal and I find its alot easier to get out and do the training if you have an event in the not to far off future. The 2009 marathon seems like its so far away that I know that if I don't have other things lined up before then I will just get lazy and quit running again. Another big help is this group here - it gives you the courage and determination to get to the finish line!! :cheer2:

So am I reading this right? I'm not alone in the lack of training recently?
The week before Thanksgiving I was told I had a sinus infection which was why my ears would plug up during exercise (freaked me out!) that was Friday and after a brutal morning (last one) with my trainer my knee was bugging me so I took the days remaining off till Thanksgiving's 4 Mile race which we did in 1 hour 1 minute.
Day after Thanksgiving I posted my race report and probably within 4 hours of that I was showing signs of a virus and had a temp of a 104. Laid me low for the weekend, no eating. The week following was all about getting back on my feet.
Finally after about 2 weeks of no training and my only exercise being the 4 mile race I made it back to the gym this past Tuesday and go figure I RAN my 1st solid MILE!
Back up to the ToT weekend when I talked to Susie (escape) and her running buddy Cindy. Cindy had mentioned that for her the first 10 minutes of running was always tougher and then everything balanced out. Days after getting home from ToT I managed to run for 10 minutes non stop thought I was going to die but I did and then I did it again the next day. Woohoo.
I don't think I had run since those 2 days like that until this past Tuesday when I managed to run 1 mile at a 12:46 pace on the treadmill at a 2% incline. OMG! Thought I was going to die! LMBO You all will totally understand that I was within 0.05 of a full mile and my lungs felt like their were going to explode, my heart felt like a cartoon character and I never thought those 0.05 would be over but no way was I stopping when i was THAT close. i didn't care how much the stitch in my side hurt i was doing the FULL mile.
I dragged my tush to the gym on Thursday to do the circuit (3 sets) and let me tell you I plan on hitting the gym in the future even if I'm on death's door because I am hurting today where I had not been before. Today I managed to do another solid mile of running but at a 13:20 pace & 2% incline. The 13:20 pace was easier. I wasn't dying as bad at the end and actually was able to run again after a bit of a breather.
all in all a good week of training considering I've been in a near panic over the fast approaching Jan 13th.
Happy training & holdiays too all :)
BTW... can we just fast forward to Jan 14th where we've all successfully completed our races and are wearing our medals and all I have to worry about is speeding up for the Minnie? :lmao:
I'm going to be a basket case before Jan 1st :scared:

Thanks for the great photos of Pearl. You have been and lived in so many interesting places and seen so many amazing things. Unfortunately I only see you in the crazy busy times before races and the like. Please, please promise me we can sit down in January, perhaps with the other > 50 males of the club, and as long as you keep the stories coming I will keep putting down my credit card.
I arrive on Wednesday, January 9 in the mid afternoon, I don't leave until Thursday, January 17, and I'm staying at the Boardwalk Villas. Let's make sure we find some quiet time to talk about the journey's we've made in our, dear god, half century of living.
Stephanie
Thanks for the kind offer. As a general rule, I never run in the rain. I wish you well this weekend. Try and run between the raindrops!
The race is 37 days from today, and I think I'm almost ready, both physically and mentally. I've got 2 more long efforts, and my body is holding together pretty well. As always, I'm not sure about those really long training efforts. I love doing 6-10 hard miles, but when I get past 10 my mind and body begin to play tricks on me. Sadly I'll be on that stupid treadmill Sunday, snow and ice predicted, so I need to set the speed on something I can maintain, and spend, say 190 minutes on the thing. Perhaps I'll start when the Pats-Steelers game starts, and by the time I'm done it should be done as well.
I need to move to Santa Barbara. Good running weather every day of the year. I just need my salary doubled or tripled so I could afford it.
And best of all . . . my teaching sessions for the semester ARE OVER  . Just final exams and grading at the College/Sloan, and I'm on break. Is this a great country or what?

Hello All!
I've been absent for a while and have not caught up on posts yet.
20 miles today....on a treadmill! :scared: (as it was 18 degrees and the roads are lousy with black ice.)
I arrived home from the gym, walked out behind my house barefoot and in shorts, and sat down in 5 inches of snow and buried my legs and feet for 15 minutes. After initial screaming, which alarmed the neighborhood kids sledding in our backyard, it wasn't bad. (Buried in snow with shorts didn't faze the kids; I'm known as the Dad who's a little "off" :rolleyes1 )
Anyhow, I am so glad I have only one more LR (Dec. 21). Take care all and happy training!

I haven't even been lurking as I started a new job on Monday and, to be honest, I felt like I was sinking for a couple days. Today I feel like I'm swimming so I'm happy about that.
The calf that I hurt 10 days ago is slowly healing. I hope to run 40 minutes tomorrow and may 60 on Sunday. Considering the weather report is calling for rain, sleet, snow, ice, and, as far as I know, pestilence and plague, I'll be on the TM. Lovely.
Vic: the photos are lovely. You've been so many places.
SilverE: yowser! You've gone beyond an ice bath to a snow bath!! You're a better man than I, Gunga Din!!!

My 5k tonight was a disaster, though I thank God I was not DLF! Take my advice. You cannot have only coffee for breakfast, no lunch until a green salad and canned chicken breast at 4:30, walk 14 blocks in heels to and from court in the snow/sleet and run a 5k that starts at 6:45 when it is 32 degrees. Repeat after me. UGLY! BTW, if this race had not been for Special Olympics, I definitely would have DNS'ed. Oh, and I had the most God-awful charlie horses in my feet and calves when we got back to the car. What?????
TM tomorrow. Hoping for at least 8 miles each session for 2 sessions this weekend. That is the only way I'll get the miles in. Not really the way I want to do it, but it will have to do.

Good Morning Everyone -
I woke up to near perfect running weather and still had to do the "what do I wear" dance all over the house. I am layered so I stay warm as I put out the water and powerade and then the poor TNTers will get to watch this old lady strip down to her racing shorts.
I am feeling for my snow bound WISH friends. I can not imagine trying to function in that kind of weather much less trying to train! Good Luck on your LRs and stay safe! NO injuries today.
SilverE - Glad you opted out of the black ice! Scary that. As for the neighbors kids, well it kind of goes with the whole training for Goofy. Congrats on getting the 20 in on a treadmill. I think every mile over 5 miles on a treadmill should count double!
Happy trails!

Morning all! My LR is tomorrow, so nothing to report from here. Still looks like rain for me tomorrow. I don't mind a little rain, as i've run 16 before in the rain, but I might have to draw the line at a driving rain storm. But at least it will be warm. So, I plan on getting up early and going as far as I can before the rain starts--maybe I'll be lucky like last week and the rain will hold off until the afternoon.
SilverE--Wow 20 on the TM! You da man!
Martha--glad to hear that the injury is improving. Just take care of yourself and the WISHers will get you to that finish line!
Craig--much luck to you tomorrow with the TM LR. Great news that the semester is drawing to a close; I'm sure my father is doing the same happy dance. Wow Wow! What great shots. I suspect you did enough flying for a lifetime, but I really enjoy the little flying I've done in non-airline non-jet aircraft.
So the Mirages can do about Mach 2 and your C-130 would cruise at, what, 200 knots? That must have been pretty cool. Perhaps my favorite part of Soarin' is in the high desert when the F-16's come up and roar off. Your Pyrennes shots are your real life adventure of the same thing.

I can assure you that you don't want to be an > 50 male. Without going into details, pretty much nothing works they way it once did. You youngsters have it better in every way. But of course, my child is out of College and gainfully employed. You'll be in the same situation in, what, 2020  ?

I opted out of running today...again...as my road is still not cleaned up from the last storm with slush and ice on the sides where I would be running. So, I skiied again today. I made it 6.46 miles before my legs gave out on me. Not bad for the beginning of the season although we need a little more snow to cover the bare spots. My FIL works miracles with the snow that we have so I really cannot complain.
SilverE: 20 miles on the treadmill????????????? EEK.
Good luck to everyone on their LRs and other training. I have a rest day tomorrow and I plan on doing just that! :cloud9:

susan and I managed to get in 10 miles today. 10 slow short miles. ugh! we started when it was 26* and sunny but moved into the trees to stay out of the wind and although we've been done for a few hours now it's currently only 29* out there. have i mentioned lately how much i hate michigan? if lives in florida because i'm moving in with them for the winter months ;) LOL
the paths were snow covered and icy with spots of clean dry pavement. i truly feel for those in Maine and other locals with similar bad running conditions. SilverE not sure how you managed to do 20 miles on the TM, I was in awe ages ago when I saw how many miles Cam does on hers and all Susan and I could say was WOW. I'm really lovin' the TM at the gym but I don't think I'd be able to do that far plus they won't let me someone else always wants it ;)
Poor poor Panda. :sad1:
Shan stay safe on the TM while on vaca LOL You'll do fine. :thumbsup2 Bring the music though!
Cecila after a quick reread i see you are in warm GA, I'll be down later this weekend for an indefinite stay LMBO ;)
Warm thoughts and happy training to all!!!! and if all else fails in the weather department....it's ....COCOA TIME!!! with whipped cream of course.

Steve: Now *THAT* ROCKS!! :worship: True hard core cold-weather runner there. Major Kudos Steve!
Martha:  Hope that calf heals and your runs are successful. WTG on the new job...you've just got a few things going on right now ;).
Cam: Wow!!! Definitely a tough situation there with your 5K. You did it thought...I'm majorly impressed fwiw!

As for me...ugh! Ended up sick all day today  . Was supposed to do 8 miles this afternoon....which I had to pass on due to feeling really really lousy. Makes me soooo MAD  to miss a run or workout. I'm scheduled for 16 miles tomorrow and hope like crazy that I make a miraculous full recovery!!!! Can't miss the LRs this close to :goofy:. Good luck to everyone on their LRs and training.

My 18 miler turned into 14 miles after my knee started hurting after about 90 minutes. Only one more LR to go.
Can't wait to hear about everyone else's LR's!
Off to ice this knee.
