View Full Version : WISH team coming to your area!

Teri posted a thread that's generated some interesting discussion for folks who feel 2008 may be their last full or last WDW event. I really think this year was cool where we had WISH team contingents at various races (the Pig, CDC, MCM, etc).
I'll be doing WDW for the foreseeable future because it's sorta local for me, so my question is what other races are out there that WISH team members may want to try? I know we already have a group planning for Philly and the Minnie. We have a lot of team members in NC and New England...any races that y'all recommend for a WISH gathering or that would be fun to do? How 'bout the Midwest and all you guys in Arkansas and the Atlanta area?
Please post your suggestions, especially if it's a race you're already planning to do. I know I'd like to do one of the RnR races some day. Maybe something in Hilton Head since several of us are DVC members? Anyway, throw out some thoughts and we can see what comes up!

Mel - This is a great idea. I know that having some fellow WISHers can make an event much more enjoyable.
I am tentatively planning to do the National Marathon (D.C.) in late March http://www.nationalmarathon.com/
the Cleveland Marathon in late May http://www.clevelandmarathon.com/
and the above mentioned Philly Marathon in November '08 http://www.philadelphiamarathon.com/exec/philly/home/home.asp.
All of that could change based on if I plan on doing anything other than training next year, but....
Thanks Mel!

I saw Teri's post, and it was interesting. I love running with WISHers, and can't imagine having to run a whole marathon by myself. Or worse yet, having to train for a marathon by myself.
Here are some races I'd love to do:
New York City Marathon
Chicago Marathon
London Marathon
BOSTON Marathon (hey gotta have a dream, right?)
I'd also like to do a RnR marathon, and I'd like to do something on the West Coast too.
In my area we have a couple marathons, but I haven't run any of them yet. We have the Buffalo Marathon in May, Rochester has a smallish marathon in September, Lake Placid has a marathon in June, and Corning, NY has the Wineglass Marathon in October.
Also close by to me is the
Toronto Marathon
Vermont Marathon.
Also, when I was growing up in Pittsburgh, they had a really good marathon. It was the site of the Olympic Trials a couple of times, but the marathon was discontinuned because the city went bankrupt. They're talking of starting the Pittsburgh Marathon up again for 2009. The old course went right past my MIL's house, and if they start that marathon up again I'm there.
Mike- You're thinking of doing the Cleveland Marathon? My SIL (i.e., the Cool Aunt) lives in Cleveland, and I was thinking of doing that one too. Let me know if you're serious about it. I need to find something to train for sooooooon.

Mel, I think this is an excellent idea.
It looks like there are several options in the east since that's where the majority of the WISHers seem to be located...or so it seems. :)
One race out west that I think might be kind of fun is the Las Vegas marathon/half marathon in early December - '08.
A race that was fun this past October is the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. However, this one is geared more for women, obviously. :upsidedow
Of course, I'm all for the Little Rock marathon weekend. I think this is a good race and the Perks Tent is WONDERFUL - free massages before and after the race, lots of food and other goodies. Later that evening, there is a free barbeque dinner and entertainment for all race participants. Really nice.
Just my two cents. :teeth:

A few races out there really interest me IF I decide to do another marathon:
New York City
Las Vegas
PF Changes in Phoenix (my Dad lives there)
Disneyland half
I think all of these offer a half so I that might be the way for me to go. This full training takes way too much time :)
I need a cool course to run. I used to live around Cleveland so it is not what I would consider a cool course. even though the "event" itself sounds fun. Washington DC might be pretty cool too.
enjoy,
Duane

Awesome idea Mel! These events are always more fun with WISHers, and the more the merrier!
DH and I had tentatively planned to do the Arizona Distance Classic in Tucson in mid-March until I saw the airfare - over $450 roundtrip per person. Ouch......I didn't realize it is springtraining time in AZ and airfare is through the roof! So that one is on hold unless we get a great DING.
We are definitely doing the John Bingham Alaskan cruise in June. The longest at-one-time distance is a half in Alaska. It would be really cool to have other WISHers there!!
I also have Philly on my schedule, but not the full the other thread is about - the half on Sept 21st. And if I could find a way to spring the VA Beach half Monte mentioned there is a special Beach-to-Bell medal for people who do both! How awesome is that?!? Or, if you do Philly in Sept and one other Elite music/RnR marathon or half you get a Dynamic Duet medal. Hey - it is all about the bling!
DH and I also definitely plan on Vegas in early Dec 2008. There is both a full and a half! And a cool medal.
I definitely want to hear everyone's recommendations! And would definitely consider a non-WDW destination for a WISH event!
I've found a great site for looking at possibilities. www.runningintheusa.com - just click on races, then you can choose by race category or state, or you can search by month. There are just a ton of events I'd love to do!!

Hey Pat & Susie: I might be up for Vegas in 08, doing the half. I think that would be kinda cool!
I'm looking at the budget to see what may be feasible for 08.

I saw the medal for last year's race. It wasn't nearly as cool as the year before. Plus, there were some issues with last year's race being a little unorganized. Hopefully, those issues will be resolved this year. I can't wait to hear about it because I think Vegas would be a lot of fun...especially if a lot of WISHers participate. :woohoo:

Mike...are you anywhere near Virginia Beach? I have the Yeungling Shamrock Half on my to do list. Have you heard anything about that one?
CDC in Chicago was really fun and great to have such a big group of WISHers to hangout with.
I have a list of races in each state and some international races I'd like to do, but no particular order or plan. Here are some of my favorites:
Mt. Desert Island http://www.mdimarathon.org/
Yeungling Shamrock Marathon http://shamrockmarathon.com/site3.aspx

MCM
Grandma's
Kona
Applefest
Nova Scotia half

I am all for doing some other marathons. I have 3 half marathons on the radar for spring but here are some other ones I would love to do:
ING Georgia - Atlanta -I loved the half and will one day do the full
Country Music - Nashville - ditto the above but skip the full because Nashville is too fun to be sore.
Mercedes Benz Marathon - Birmingham - Finishers get their name in the hat for a brand new Mercedes.
Scenic City Half - Chattanooga - this year is the inaugral event but everything the Chattanooga Track Club does is excellent so I am sure this will be too.
Myrtle Beach Marathon - SCarolina - They have a relay that could be a wonderful WISHer event.
I also want to run the classics: Marine corp, NY, Chicago etc.

Ditto what Cecilia said to the Country Music Marathon. LOVED that race...LOVE that city! :goodvibes Do the half and then enjoy the music that night. We had a great time out on the town after the race this year. AWESOME run event and great crowd support!
Here's my marathon wish list..
NYC...of course. 'nuff said.
Arizona Rock 'N Roll...maybe next January in lieu of Disney.
Disneyland...I'm going to Disneyland baby! That one is pretty much a sealed deal for me in 2008. Yay! :goodvibes
Grandma's Marathon (Duluth)...Heard good things about this race. Would love to do the half maybe!
Philadelphia!
Virginia Beach Half!
Big Sur!!!
Napa Valley...ummm...wine! Need I say more.
Atlanta someday...just gotta' prepare myself for them thar' hills. Yikes!

Virginia Beach on Labor Day weekend is a great top-off for the summer! I have done it the last two years, and my kids make me promise to do it again 'next year'! They love the beach, so we make it a four day 'vacation' and it's our only beach trip! It would be a great 'Wisher's' race!

The Shamrock half and full look like a lot of fun. I was really thinking about doing the full until I saw that the "nice" hotels looked like they all had 2 night minimums. That made the Wirefly National in DC a cheaper pick for me.
Are you sure you want to come north of NC in March? You'll freeze your patootie off!
Dave - I'm really going to try to do Cleveland in May. Kathy is doing Minnie with a friend and I need something to work for in the late spring.

Hmmm...CLeveland might happen here. Dh really wants a race to do to parallel my Minnie. That may be a good road trip. Of course, it means that I'm busy evey weekend in May, but that seems to be the story of my life...

Monte, yeah I know how the hotel thing goes! My dh already booked our hotel for next year. I stayed really close to the start last time......just walked for a few minutes straight out and I was there! Much better than the year before. We had a 20 min drive to get there, and my family volunteered at a water station and they had to be there at 5:30 AM! Ouch!

One of the best destination marathons in NC (my opinion, of course) is the OBX Half and Marathon at Kitty Hawk NC -- very Penguin and walker friendly. The area has three lighthouses, some great restaurants, Roanoke Festival Park (a historical made-for-families place), an aquarium -- and then the outlet malls!
There are some other nice races that make good Disney prep in or near NC as well -- the Mistletoe Half Marathon in Winston Salem and a turkey trot in Pinehurst, but they are kinda lonely at the back.
For SC, if the Myrtle Beach Marathon in February doesn't appeal to you, there's always Kiawah Island Marathon and Half the 2nd weekend in December (good for that last long run before Disney) about an hour from Charleston and an hour-and-a-half from Savannah -- two great cities with lots of possibilities for tours, activities, and restaurant meetings. Kiawah can be quite expensive though, unless we could arrange to share a condo (which is what I did this year with some members of my Galloway group). It's a resort island, complete with luxurious spa. Great low-key scenic race with a generous time limit.
Those are my best suggestions.

I'd like ideas on where to stay as well. The most economical option is to catch the race shuttle in from the Virginia Beach Amphitheatre in Hampton Roads, but then you have to wait in the hot sun for the bus ride back. I'd rather be closer to the start. I wish I'd kept the hotel list from last year.

I am doing the OKC Memorial Half Marathon on April 27th. I managed to get one of the discounted rooms at the Sheraton (less than 1/2 price), 6 blocks from the start. This is a VERY walker friendly race. As well as the half there will be a full and a 5K. It all starts at the site/memorial of the Alfred P. Murrow building that was bombed.

Wendy, are you doing Myrtle Beach? DH may do the 1/2. I will be there but won't run it if I sign up for White Lake 1/2 Ironman on May 3rd.
Wendy, are you doing Thunder Road next weekend?
We (Bree and I) are most likely doing the MAP Tri in March at the Huntersville aquatic Center. I think someone from NC said they may do this one too. It is a GREAT 1st Tri b/c the swim is in a pool and set up well!
Any takers?

The races that I am already registered for for next year are the Wirefly National Half Marathon (in D.C.) and the Rock N' Roll San Diego Marathon. I would love to have other WISHers join me (and actually get to meet some of you)!
I ran the VA Beach Rock N' Roll Half this past Labor Day weekend and really enjoyed that race. I am thinking of running it again and would definitely if it wasn't so expensive. The hotels really jack up the prices and all the hotels near the finish (where we wanted to stay to be close to all the events going on, including the concerts) had a three night minimum stay. I guess I'll just have to see what other races/vacations sneak into my schedule for the coming year. I do have to say that I thought it was worth it to stay near the finish and be able to walk back to the hotel after the race and not worry about taking a shuttle and also be able to walk to the concerts on Sat. and Sun. night.

Great thread idea!
For those that want a HUGE medal, come visit us in AR for the Little Rock Marathon the first weekend in March. The marathon finisher's medal is the largest in the world--last year's had a spinning globe and women got pink, men got blue! Also, it has a very generous 8hr time limit for the full (the half is either 4 or 6) I'm going to be doing the full relay this year (Disney will be my 3rd full this year, and I'm dying). This year's theme is "Six in the City" www.littlerockmarathon.com
Another great WI marathon is Milwaukee's Lakefront Marathon. It's in Oct and is a point to point race--downhill (mostly) along Lake Michigan. It's where my dad qualified for Boston with a 2:50 finish time! He gives it 2 thumbs up. So this one is on my list, as is the Fox Cities Marathon in Appleton WI, b/c we used to live there.
Mike/Dave--we might be up for the Cleveland one as well (have to check the date b/c BIL is getting married in cleveland one weekend this May)
Chicago is definitely on my list as well. And the MCM!! AAAHHH--good thing I'm young;) I think I am going to have to just pick one more race for '08. My body is almost at the breaking point right now and need a little recovery time.

Stephanie the LR half looks like fun. DH and I had tentatively planned to do the Arizona Distance Classic in mid-March until I saw the airfare: $460 per PERSON roundtrip from Chicago. Ouch!! I didn't realize it was spring training and that the airfares went through the roof in March. Unless we get a great DING LR instead might work. Silly question - do you know how far Little Rock is from the national park where you can find diamonds? DH has wanted to go there for a couple years!
Jen - I'll let you know about Madison, but it is looking good! Very important question - do you know what the medal looks like? Gotta have pretty bling!!
There are just so many cool events - but darn! Just not enough time and money, I really need to hit the lotto. And, if I hit the really, really big one I'll take WISHers to a meet in Helen's backyard (Australia)...now how neat would that be??

Pat--I think Crater of Diamonds is around an hour from LR. I've actually never been there. But on our way down to Houston for Thanksgiving I saw the exit off of I-30. Maybe susie knows. I really enjoyed the LR race. There is a lot of crowd support, lot of church congregations line the streets after services downtown. If you do decide to "do" LR, make sure and pay the extra $$ for the VIP tent. I was supremely jealous last year, b/c I didn't spend the $20--they had some GREAT stuff!

Thinking about this one as a kid-free weekend with DH. Hotel rates are a bit icky though.
Anyone have other suggestions for a Labor Day or Memorial weekend half?
Madison WI has a Memorial weekend half.....I am seriously considering it, and Jen said she would almost definitely do it (pending kids schedules) if another WISHer did it! I just have to find out when my DN's graduation party is - if there isn't a conflict I am in!

I don't have a half, but Mackinaw Bridge RUn (5 miles) is Saturday of Memorial Weekend. :D

Gee Mel, if you postpone it until 10/19 you can come do MDI with me. I am going to need some moral support, especially through the hills. Oh and someone to talk to for all those miles!!!
