Chapter 1 - The grand idea and Cast of Characters
It is late spring of 2006 and a spark of an idea starts to grow in the dark recesses of a slightly unsettled mind. A mind sitting loosely in the cranium of our intrepid planner, prodder, and born again Disney fan. The idea is to have members from his family and DW's family all meet for a meet/reunion at The Land That Walt Made :wizard:
After many e-mails, phone calls, and the occasional misinterpreted hand gesture a timeframe of January 9th - 18th, 2008 as our "go time." And with that our basic cast of characters was set:
Me, I'm Mike (38) - I work as a network administrator and help desk coordinator at a community college - I keep the computers talking :badpc: I enjoy photography, camping, bowling, and computer/PS2 games. I'm currently working my way up through the ranks on Pirates of the Caribbean Online (the whole family actually plays) pirate:
DW Roxy (33) - she's an executive assistant at a precision machine shop. Along with that she's got supermom syndrome :bounce: doing work for DD2's PTO, acting as secretary for DD1's PTA, working at the gym where both girls go, and coaching DD1's volleyball team. And her bowling team is currently in 1st place and jus won their last block - w00t!
DD11 Kyra - dealing with the transition to middle school and the increased homework load, she's a dedicated student :teacher: former gymnast, and is currently in the playoffs for volleyball along with getting ready for the competition season for cheerleading :cheer2: In the spring she also does fastpitch softball.
DD8 Gillian - this is our free spirit/daredevil :hyper: She like to run and jump and play and does gymnastics off and on along with softball. To give you an idea about the kind of kid she is - she rode ToT at Disneyland 7 times at the age of 5
DM Mariah (62) - she does some office work in relation to DF's job and is very big into genealogy - tracing branches of the family tree back to 1673 in Scotland. She has post-polio syndrome but doesn't let it slow her down :D She'll be motoring around on one of those scooters at WDW.
DF John (60) - works as an industrial park manager, construction foreman, and general jack of all trades for a guy who owns properties in a half dozen states. He lives to work and will never retire if he can help it.
MiL Ann (66) - She's the office manager at the same place DW works at. She's struggling with the transition to retirement but is getting to the point where her health isn't going to let her keep working full time. She has sciatic, hip, and back issues and is also going to be getting around on with some help via an electric wheelchair.
Sis Maria (42) - She works at a newspaper and is an ameteur photographer. She just e-mailed me and said she'd be there for the first part of our trip - yay!!!
Nephew Matt (24) - Works for a big food chain. I haven't seen him since he was 16 so I'm really not sure what he's in to other than...
Nephew's Fiancée Sarah (24) - sounds like a great girl - it'll be our first time meeting her.
We also have my BiL & his fam that still aren't sure, but might be there too.
Here's a pic of DD11:

Great start..your girls are very cute.
On our last trip I did Disney with an ECV due to herniated discs in my back...I cannot walk long distances. Make sure they use them if needed.
So where will you be staying and when in January are you going? We are going then too.

Howdy jordanyosh!
Yes, another west-coaster - thank you for joining! 13 people? That must have been an adventure :-] I'm sure I'll have questions as we get closer. I'm finishing the first draft of my itenerary and am trying to find a good balance between seeing enough without exausting everyone :D
My DM went with my fam to Universal Orlando in 2002 and rode the ECV and has one of her own so she's a champ at it. My MiL however has had little experience other than tooling around Wal-Mart and such. We keep joking to them that they'll be our motorized sherpas carrying all the extra stuff!

Hello Avivasmom!
Thank you for the compliment on my girls - I'll pass it along :-]
The ECVs are gonna be a lifesaver ...I know I'll be wishing I had one by the end of each day ;)
We will be staying off site this time around. My DM has a timeshare at the Grand Beach Phase II on Lake Bryan, right across the freeway from DTD. It is a 3-bedroom lockout which we have for 11 days - whoohoo!
We'll be at WDW from the 9th to the 18th with a little break in the middle to check out Sea World/Discovery cove.

OK, for background I went to Disneyland when I was 7 years old, but it was just a day there and it was part of a week-long theme park hopping adventure put together by my parents and was all a blur  I only really remember the bicentennial theming (we went in '76) and the electric light parade, along with Pirates of the Caribbean.
DW went to WDW as a kid and also only had one day there, mostly spent at EPCOT and left feeling like she missed most of the magic :(
I was born in Georgia and bounced around through Tennessee, California, and then spent the bulk of my childhood in Arizona. My fam moved to southern Oregon when I was 15 and I did HS there except for my senior year, which was done partially back in Georgia (long story).
I did 4 years in the Army as a rocket artilleryman and did time at Ft. Sill, OK, Ft Hood, TX, and Baumholder, Germany. I was in Germany to see the Berlin Wall fall down, which was very cool. I was also in during Desert Storm, but our unit didn't deploy so I spent it pulling 12-hr gate guard shifts in the snow making sure our Bavarian paradise didn't get invaded by a non-existent terrorist threat.
When I got out I worked for a year before going to college, where I met Roxy. We were married less than a year after that and have been together for 14 years. We rented an apartment, then a house, then bought our first house - a palatial 900 sq. ft. - lol We lived there for several years, but when our 2nd daughter was on the way we decided that we needed a bigger place.
Our MiL owned a house in the same town and her health/mobility started to go downhill. We decided to try out living together and amazingly enough it worked out, giving her some help doing things and us some help looking after the wee ones. We did a big remodel and added 1,100 sq. ft., bringing the place to just over 2,600 sq. ft. total! It is now a 5 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath including 2 master suites with spa tubs :cool1:
Back to the Disney side of things we realized that our girls hadn't had the experience and we wanted to give ourselves the ability to have a longer, more enjoyable time there. We're west-coasters so it was an easy choice to go to Disneyland. We did a 3-day package there in January of 2005 doing DL and CA :wizard: We went there with my BiL and his fam.
It happened to be a time of pretty bad rains, which scared most of the populace away from the parks. It was overcast 50%, drizzled 40%, and was full-on downpour the other 10%. The rain itself wasn't an issue since Oregon is a pretty wet place, and the temps were 65-70 degrees, which for us was workable :thumbsup2
The end result was only a couple of rides being closed (unfortunately including Haunted Mansion - grrrr) and us being able to ride all the rides we wanted. The longest wait we had was 10 minutes other than waiting for timed shows. We rode everything at least once and several rides multiple times - in some cases not even having to get off.
I know we won't get that lucky as far as ride waits when we go to WDW, but I'll be happy with whatever the outcome is. I think that's enough of the background stuff, next time we'll delve a bit into what I have planned for our grand adventure!

Hey - I was in Berlin then, too! (Spent my junior year abroad with lots of travelling - spent a couple weeks in W. Germany with three large male friends, and we rented a sledgehammer to help make little chips in the Wall!)
And here I'm feeling intimidated planning for the 4 of us...

Hello hello! Yes, it should be very interesting - I'm trying to make it as low impact as circumstances will allow and am planning afternoon breaks back at the resort each day ;) I know for my DF especially it will be all about showering our girls with attention :D

Cool! Yeah, I remember the little tables set up with hammer n chisels for rent :D
We actually went to a more 'resedential' area and found them tearing it out with wrecking balls. We were lazy and just picked up a couple of pieces - that was some pretty hard-packed cement ...I had to carry that thing for several kms. Unfortunately I was young and an idiot and sold the piece to get beer money :(
There are two things really stick out in my mind from that time. The first was the fleet of 'trabi' cars that came across. I was amazed at how much a family could squeeze into those tiny cars. We were on convoy from the border and were surrounded by them and they were all honking and waving at us - it was pretty amazing.
The second was seeing Roger Waters 'The Wall' live in Berlin. The concert was great, but it was the energy of the people there that really made it something to remember :-]

Wow - that had to have been amazing. I was there a couple months after it started coming down, so not a flood of people coming through then. But - somewhere, I believe I still have my little bitty pieces of The Wall. Those sledgehammers didn't get big pieces off, at least not when I was swinging!

DD2 Gillian (8) - this is our free spirit/daredevil :hyper: She like to run and jump and play and does gymnastics off and on along with softball. To give you an idea about the kind of kid she is - she rode ToT at Disneyland 7 times at the age of 5
DM Mariah (62) - she does some office work in relation to DF's job and is very big into genealogy - tracing branches of the family tree back to 1673 in Scotland. She has post-polio syndrome and mostly gets around in one of those scooters. She works part time doing office/accounting stuff for DD.
Sis Maria (42) - She works at a framing shop and is an ameteur photographer. She just e-mailed me and said she'd be there for the first part of our trip - yay!!!
Nephew Matt (24) - Asst manager for a big food chain. I haven't seen him since he was 16 so I'm really not sure what he's in to other than...
Nephew's Fiancée Sarah (24) - sounds like a great girl - it'll be our first time meeting her.
We also have my BiL & his fam that still aren't sure, but might be there too.
Here's a pic of DD1:

And one of the girls, Roxy, and I:

Next installment I'll give you some background on me and the fam and how we got here :-]
I realized I had forgotten to comment on your thread. So here I am. My husband works in a computer related field. He works with POS systems in restuarants and stuff. We have two hobbies in common...photography and bowling. I am horrible at taking nice pictures but I just love doing it. I mostly love taking photos of my niece and nephew though. And bowling...again, I love it but am horrible at it. I have my own ball and shoes so people always think I'll be good. But I'm lucky if I can get more than an score of 80. No joke. But it's fun so that's all I care about.
Is Roxy your wife's real name? I LOVE that name. Is it short for anything. I've been noticing names a lot lately because my sister and brother-in-law are trying to figure out a name for their second daughter (due in December.)
When I was little we took three big trips to WDW. We'd spend a few days at the parks and then drive down south to stay in a condo for a few days. (Sanibel Island one year and Ft. Myers the other two.) We went with all of the family on my dad's side. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents. It was a blast. I have wonderful memories of it.

Your house sounds great! We won't have any spa tubs in our house. But we will have a garden tub in the master so it's a bit deeper and more comfortable than a regular tub.
Disneyland in the rain was always nice since we had APs. We always knew the crowds would be low those days. But if it was a vacation I'd probably be a little sad about tons of rain. Keeping my fingers crossed for no rain (or very little rain) at WDW in January.

Love the pics and am looking forward to more
Thank you for stopping by! I'll be adding more soon ...I'm almost done with the first draft of my itenerary :D
Wow - that had to have been amazing. I was there a couple months after it started coming down, so not a flood of people coming through then. But - somewhere, I believe I still have my little bitty pieces of The Wall. Those sledgehammers didn't get big pieces off, at least not when I was swinging!
Yeah, it was that (I realized I said the word 'amazing' twice in one sentence up there - lol). Good for you for still having your pieces ...and I can understand about not getting big pieces off. You'd pretty much need a jack hammer or heavy equipment to get a bigger piece off.
Hiya! Ahhh, he keeps those touch-screen-based systems going aye? We have some 'kiosk' type setups in our student center that work the same way. I'm very much an ameteur photographer, doing mostly landscape, wildlife, and family pics. I just got a new lens for the trip but haven't been able to try it out because the weather has been cruddy here :P
I also have my own ball and shoes and such and was even on 2 leagues last year (a family mixed junior/adult one with DW and DD1) and a standard Monday night league. I'm taking the year off from it due to work stuff and other scheduling issues. I'm no pro - the best game I've rolled was a 230 and my average is around 145. But it is fun and I look forward to getting back into it next year :D
Yup, her name is Roxanne, but I call her Roxy. And since I call her that all of my friends and co-workers call her it too. She goes by either though. It is a great name, especially now that the Police song has kind of faded into the background - lol. Congrats to your sister on her upcoming baby!
The family trips you took sound like they were wonderful. It is nice when family can get together like that. When we went to Universal/Is of Adventure in 2002 we first stopped by my grandmother's beachfront apartment in Destin, FL on the gulf coast and stayed there for a few days with a bunch of family. It was a great time with lots of wonderful memories.
Your house sounds great! We won't have any spa tubs in our house. But we will have a garden tub in the master so it's a bit deeper and more comfortable than a regular tub.

I'm very happy with it - and since I am a techie I put together a website for it with an interactive floorplan that links to pictures of the rooms with some before and after stuff. I need to update many of the pictures at this point since the rooms have changed/been rearranged since I first put it together ;) The spa tub is nice - ours is a 2-person model and is a nice escape after a long day. But just having a tub that you can fit into and stretch your legs out in counts for so much and it sounds like the garden tub will fit the bill for that :)
Yes, I could have done without quite so much rain, but overall I think it worked out in relation to the rides we were able to ride. The big bummer that I forgot to mention is that there were no parades/fireworks because of the bad weather :( I am with you in hoping the weather cooperates while we are at WDW!

Sounds like such an incredible trip! I can't wait to see what you have planned:)
On the January thread you said you were going to SW the same days as us, the 12&13th. It is our first time there too and we are really excited about it. Now that I know what you guys look like, if you see a family of 6 with two ECVs also hollaring "hello" you'll know we are fellow DISers:rotfl:

I didn't know you had a pretrippie! You need to announce this stuff. Pimp yourself!!
The idea is to have members from his family and DW's family all meet for a meet/reunion at The Land That Walt Made
What are you, nuts?? Or just a glutton for punishment? Just kidding, it'll be great.
After many e-mails, phone calls, and the occasional misinterpreted hand gesture a timeframe of January 9th - 18th, 2008 as our "go time." And with that our basic cast of characters was set:
Me, I'm Mike (38) - I work as a network administrator and help desk coordinator at a community college - I keep the computers talking I enjoy photography, camping, bowling, and computer/PS2 games. I'm currently working my way up through the ranks on Pirates of the Caribbean Online (the whole family actually plays)
DW Roxy (33) - she's an executive assistant at a precision machine shop. Along with that she's got supermom syndrome doing work for DD2's PTO, acting as secretary for DD1's PTA, working at the gym where both girls go, and coaching DD1's volleyball team. And her bowling team is currently in 1st place and jus won their last block - w00t!
DD1 Kyra (11) - dealing with the transition to middle school and the increased homework load, she's a dedicated student former gymnast, and is currently in the playoffs for volleyball along with getting ready for the competition season for cheerleading In the spring she also does fastpitch softball.
DD2 Gillian (8) - this is our free spirit/daredevil She like to run and jump and play and does gymnastics off and on along with softball.
Wow, nice long vacation! Where is Matt from that you havent seen him in 8 years?
Here's a pic of DD1:

Aww, its only a matter of time til the boys start calling.
And one of DD2:

This is the one that had chiari? She's precious!
And one of the girls, Roxy, and I:

Woo hoo. Nice family.:thumbsup2
That was the year before I was born.
DW went to WDW as a kid and also only had one day there, mostly spent at EPCOT and left feeling like she missed most of the magic
I don't understand why people only go for one day.:confused3
I was born in Georgia and bounced around through Tennessee, California, and then spent the bulk of my childhood in Arizona. My fam moved to southern Oregon when I was 15 and I did HS there except for my senior year, which was done partially back in Georgia (long story).
Wow, that's a lot of moving. My stepsister lives in Arizona.
:yay: for our military men!
Back to the Disney side of things we realized that our girls hadn't had the experience and we wanted to give ourselves the ability to have a longer, more enjoyable time there. We're west-coasters so it was an easy choice to go to Disneyland. We did a 3-day package there in January of 2005 doing DL and CA We went there with my BiL and his fam.
It happened to be a time of pretty bad rains, which scared most of the populace away from the parks. It was overcast 50%, drizzled 40%, and was full-on downpour the other 10%. The rain itself wasn't an issue since Oregon is a pretty wet place, and the temps were 65-70 degrees, which for us was workable
Rainy days are the best time to go!
I know we won't get that lucky as far as ride waits when we go to WDW, but I'll be happy with whatever the outcome is. I think that's enough of the background stuff, next time we'll delve a bit into what I have planned for our grand adventure!
Maybe not quite that lucky, but you're going in January. It won't be bad at all.
Hey All - Itinerary time!
This is my first stab at this so we'll see how it goes ;)
Although we will have other family members early on, this trip is mostly about my DDs (ages 8 & 11). Myself, my DW will be trying to keep up with them and both of our mothers, who will be driving a scooter & a electric wheelchair respectively. They've both promised to give the kids rides if they get tired ...so DW and I will be the ones with the sore feet :D

What fun!!!:wizard: That really is a great itenerary! You guys will get to see and experience so much!
We are also going to MK on Fri. the 18th. Maybe we will see you there too:rotfl:
On your AK day, what does go in the Rainforest Cafe exit mean/do? Is it a quicker route to EE?
Thank you - it should be a pretty magical trip :wizard:
You're at MK on the 18th? Coolness :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: We'll keep an eye out for your LGMHs!!!
The Rainforest Cafe at AK has it's own entrance. You just go in and head to the gift shop on the right. On the other side of it is entrance doors that open at the same time as the main turnstiles. You can shop for some cool gifts and beat a good chunk of the crowds - hehehe.

I didn't know you had a pretrippie! You need to announce this stuff. Pimp yourself!!
:rotfl: sorry, I'm still trying to get my bearings and catch up on yours, cherbears, and leger's TRs (among others) and didn't want to shake my maracas at y'all until I did ;-]
What are you, nuts?? Or just a glutton for punishment? Just kidding, it'll be great.
Wow, nice long vacation! Where is Matt from that you haven't seen him in 8 years?
Of course I'm nuts and as far as punishment, it depends on who's doing the punishing ;)
...JK back atcha :lmao:
I figured if we were going to got to the expense of flying back there that we better stay long enough to make it worthwhile ;) My whole fam live in Georgia ...but I was mistaken, I haven't seen him in 6 years, not 8. Tks for catching that!
Aww, its only a matter of time till the boys start calling.
She's already in that 'tween' stage ...boys will be coming along soon enough and I'm not looking forward to it.
This is the one that had chiari? She's precious!
Yup, that's her! She's our little mischief maker ...hehehe
Woo hoo. Nice family.:thumbsup2
Thankyeee!
That was the year before I was born.
Oh fine, make me feel old why doncha :upsidedow
Wow, that's a lot of moving. My stepsister lives in Arizona.
My fam was always on the move - I went to 7 different schools between K to 12th grades and have technically lived in 8 states, but did most of my growing up in AZ and OR.
:yay: for our military men!
Thank you very much - I'm glad that I did it.
Maybe not quite that lucky, but you're going in January. It won't be bad at all.
That's the idea :-]
You will be traveling to WDW on my DD's bday.
I always wanted to do the Ripley's museum. And :thumbsup2 on the Pirates Dinner.
Really? That's cool! I wish we were in the parks before her b-day so we could send her a postcard from her favorite character :D Yeah, Ripley's looks pretty cool and the Pirates Dinner was a must!
No, you can't call it that, its still MGM!!
Rope drop again??
Can't wait to read your review on Hollywood and Vine. I've always wanted to go there.
Yes, we're going to try for rope drops and then go back and rest every day to make up for it. We'll have to see how it pans out. Hehehe, I knew I'd get people commenting on putting it down as DHS instead of MGM. I'll certainly let you know how H&V is :thumbsup2
Are you going to be there as soon as they open, too?
I wonder if they get as busy as WDW on weekends. Did you pick the weekend to go here for any specific reason?
Haha - cute. Probably not. From what I've read you can get through all of Sea World in about 3/4 of a day, so even with it being a weekend doing it over the course of 2 days should be plenty to see what we want to.
We are going here over the weekend because the yearly marathon and 1/2 marathon is being run at WDW at that time.
You are very ambitions. I wonder if it will be warm enough to be swimming first thing in the morning.
We're from the northwest so what people consider 'cold' weather we consider quite nice :cool2:
Rope drop again?!?!? You're insane! That's like getting up at 4 a.m. your time every day!
I love Rainforest Cafe, but I've never been to the one in AK.
Yup, we're crazy ... and I have no idea if we'll be able to pull it off, but if we can avoid the crowds it will be worth trying! If it doesn't pan out that we can hack it we'll just make it when we can.
:yay: for Le Cellier. I wanna go there!
I've heard very good things about it and can't wait to dig into one of their steaks :woohoo:
Take lots of pictures!
Oh, I have a 4GB card and 2 1GB cards for my dSLR ...I can basically take 1500 hi-res pictures per day if I want :D
Rope drop AGAIN!:scared1:
I can't wait to hear what you think about lunch at CRT.
Oh, I'll let y'all know for sure! I'll be taking the week after we return to go through pictures/video, get my TR going, and make digital scrapbooks for each family.
Wow, that's a long trip. So it would actually be 6 pm Florida time when you get home, right? :headache:
Yes - almost 2 weeks. And yes, it'll probably feel like evening when we get back. Luckily we'll be able to collapse for the remainder of the weekend - lol

Do you do spreadsheets? I found it gives you a nice "big" picture of your trip.
I've emailed mine out to others if you'd like to take a look.
Thank you! I appreciate the offer - I do have a spreadsheet with a half-dozen tabs covering different topics. I even have an online version of it, but it is in dire need of updating from the original - lol

Hello BettyAnn - thank you very much for stopping by - sorry I was away catching back up with work and getting through the busy Turkey Day holliday :D
Thank you for the compliment on my girls and yes, I think I'm going to have to change the DD2 thing as it should be representative of age, not which one was born first - lol
I'm getting back on track now and will be posting more info today :thumbsup2

OK boys n girls, are we having fun yet :cool1:
I had a frantic couple of weeks and unfortunately the trip took a back seat to RL :(
I made the mistake of taking a "vacation" week at the end of October because I had built up too many hours and HR sent my boss a notice to make be get my butt outta there. The week off was filled with errands and projects and a very belated b-day party for DD11 (her actual birthday was at the end of August but there were so many activities going on that it kept getting postponed).
So the week ended with 7 11-12yr olds spending the night and staying up until 2am. Unfortunately by the end of the weekend DD11 and DW were sick with sick with some sort of cold bug DW recovered after a couple of days but DD11 had a constant cough for that literally lasted for almost a month. She was only able to go to sleep by sheer exhaustion coupled with heavy medication. We tried everything and had her in to the doctor three times, first for prescription Sudafed and Tylenol w/codeine, next for a steroid, and then for a scary mix of codeine & phenergan and the 'z-pack' in case it is some sort of infection. She was negative for strep and her lungs have stayed clear.
While she was sick I stayed home with her since I had a bunch of sick leave/comp time built up. I mostly slept on the couch in the living room with her propped up in a recliner next to a humidifier. I kept her on her meds and as comfortable as possible. She was sick through Thanksgiving and the rest of the fam was exhausted so we didn't worry about cooking this year and had a very enjoyable meal of Chinese take-out - lol.
The cough finally broke around Thursday and she's back to her cheerleading practice and will be going to school on Monday. She was out for 4 weeks and that caused all kinds of problems with her school. When she hit the 10-day mark I got a call stating that she HAD to come back or she would be dropped from classes! So I sent her in with a strongly worded note that she was still sick and possibly contagious and that she would be allowed cough drops and a bottle of water in class. I dosed her up on meds and sent her in but I was very unhappy about the situation. She made it to 3rd period and her math teacher said that this was ridiculous and sent her to the office and I came and picked her up.
The school's principal got involved and ended up being a big help once he knew the situation. He even offered to set up an in-home tutor if it illness continued. We had been picking up/dropping off homework assignments to keep her up to speed but there is still in class assignments and labs that she'll have to deal with. Another big concern was that the state says that a child isn't supposed to miss more than 13 days in a year and she has been out a total of 18 from this :scared1:
We had known about this reg and took it into consideration when we settled on the timeframe for our trip, which will take her and her sister out of school for 10 days. We sent out a letter to the administration and to each of her teachers at the beginning of the school year letting them know about it, but now with all of these absences we were VERY worried. We spoke with the principal and he assumed us that there would be no problems and that family is of the utmost importance to him and his school :thumbsup2 Needless to say he has made it onto our Christmas card list :santa:
So in the aftermath I've used up all of my sick leave, 2 contract days, and all of my comp time. Luckily I still have 266hrs of vacation built up ;) As a diversion I really went to town on Christmas decorations - we had the tree up the afternoon after Thanksgiving and all the indoor stuff up by the following day. I got a start on the outdoor stuff but had to take brakes due to rain. It is all up now and I must have done something right because people slow down to look at the house at night :D Here's a pic:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Images/ChristmasHouse.jpg
Well that's been our RL - we spent most of yesterday hitting stores for Christmas presents and DW's company Christmas party which she plans with MiL. I finally have a down day if DW doesn't try to drag me out to more stores today. I'll post again with trip-related stuff soon - only 36 days to go - whoohoooo!!!!

I was looking around and saw that you and your family are going to be in WDW some of the same time as me and mine. Your Plans look great. My DDad wanted to go to SeaWorld while we are there but just couldn't see putting out more money... One day. (Our trip has progressed from a 5day to 7day though) yay.
I'm glad everyone is fealing better. I was feeling sick over thanksgiving as well just not as bad.
Hope you are doing well.

Well there was some more weirdness (see below) but the great news is that today was the beginning of the new semester there and with her class work and the homework she did while she was sick she managed all As and A minus's
Sorry to hear your DD was so sick! Wouldn't the school accept a Doctors' note? What if a kid was in the hospital???
A doctor's note apparently only goes so far now, but it all worked out ...after one last kink. I dropped her off to school this morning and the principal hadn't checked his messages from the end of the week (they had clerical days). Soooo, DD was dropped from all of her classes and assigned an in-home tutor anyways. The administration was cool about it though, she just ended up sitting in the office for about 45min while they did the paperwork shuffle to get her back in her classes :upsidedow
I was talking to some parents at church and they were saying how strict schools had become about sickness which of course is all tied to money. So sad.......Glad she's feeling better.
Yup, you hit it right on the head. It is all about headcount and funding. I feel for the school administration with all of the hoops the state/feds make them jump through ...especially with the 'no child left behind' thing. Because of that 'glorious' piece of legislation my younger daughter will probably not be able to do the 5th Grade History Museum. This is a wonderful program that has the kids enact the parts of different figures from history. They have interactive roles and present pictures, timelines, an are able to answer basic questions about the figure they are portraying. This is a pic of DD11 when she did it last year:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Kyra/Kyra02.jpg
But because of the extreme emphasis on reading that has come in the 5th grade teachers don't think the students will have time for it. They're still trying to find a way, but it won't be easy. I hope they can for DD8's sake.
Sorry your DD was so sick. My son still has a cough from a cold that he's had for over a month, but nothing compared to what your little girl went through. Glad to hear she's feeling better!
There seems to be a LOT of that persistent cough going around, I hope your son kicks it soon  I'm very relieved that she is better. Now we get to go back to wrestling with her schedule. She is playing catch-up at cheer practice for their competition season, which starts on the 15th. She also has a band concert tomorrow evening and is frantically trying to learn the last 2 songs and get back in tune with the ones she does know. AND she starts up fastpitch practice on Sunday. Wheeeeee!!!!

Cool - glad to hear it ...maybe we'll see each other in the parks :cool1: I understand your DDad's PoV about the extra $$$ for SeaWorld, but we don't know when we'll be able to swing another trip back to Florida and we don't want our DDs to be too old to enjoy the whole thing as kids. So we went into this with an attitude of doing it all up right and making it our one big blowout vacation :woohoo:
Good deal that your trip got extended another 2 days, every day counts. And sorry to hear you got a case of the ickies too ...hope you are feeling better.
And I am doing very well - thank you for asking and glad to meet you  I know you and your BF are going to have a great time there with your mom n dad. Hopefully your DDad won't give you two too much grief ;) Of course I say this knowing full well that I'll probably give my DD's BF no end of grief if he went on a family vacation with us - lolol

Sorry to hear about your daughters sickness and school troubles. I'm so glad I homeschool:cloud9:
Just think how good it was it happened now and not at Disney, that would be so awful:eek: I keep hoping no one will get sick , and if they do please let it be over before the trip!!!
It's so hard on me when the kids are sick, it's just awful seeing them in so much pain:sad2:
Glad she's better. Did the rest of you not get it too? Poor thing:grouphug:

I just caught up on your report. RL got in the way here too (because of everything with my sister having the baby early.) We also all got sick. We caught it from my 2 year old niece while we were all up at the hospital with my sister. Luckily we got better before we took our California trip last week.
I love your house and Christmas lights! We haven't even put our tree up yet. And I've done no shopping yet.

No, no packing yet except for organizing my electronics and making and remaking lists ;)
Yes, homeschooling would have made things a lot less complicated, that's for sure! I think I'm in the same frame of mind ...if they're going to get sick let's get it over with now!
My DW is much the same, doesn't deal well with them being sick. For that reason it worked out better for me to be camped out in the living room with DD. If DW had been out there she wouldn't have slept at all and would have been up with every cough to try and make it better :) Only DD11 and DW got it, and DW was over it within a week.
Lets hope that all of us traveling to the world stay healthy at least until after our trips!

Well it sounds like a busy time - sorry y'all got sick but happy you got over it quickly. 2yr olds have a way of crawling all overy everyone and 'sharing' anything they have - lol.
Thank you for the compliment on the house  I was actually out there last night replacing a string of icicle lights that had fried out :upsidedow Good luck with the decorating and the shopping!

I have been having problems staying focused on any one thing. Friday will bring us to the one month mark! It will be time to get out the count down calendar ...which means I have to get the darned thing together - lol
While my mind spins around all there is left to do I'll indulge in a little interlude from or last trip to the land that Walt made :D We went in January of 2005 and drove from Oregon with a rainstorm rolling along with us. Oh and as a disclaimer my younger DD may look a bit like a boy in some of the pics ...that's because she decided to experiment with the art of cutting her own hair a couple of weeks before the trip :scared1: All of these shots were taken with the still camera feature of my camcorder so the image quality isn't great but it makes for small files to post and load on the page :D

So even if it is wet at WDW while we're there it'll be old hat for us - lol

It rained last Friday while we were at Disneyland. It poured. Just the walk from the tram to the entrance...we got soaked. We bought ponchos but we put them over our soaking clothes. I'm packing ponchos (and maybe my new rain boots) for our WDW trip. I hated being so wet at the parks...that I may even buy these rain suits from Bass Pro Shop. They are only $15 total for the jacket and pants. So I figure if I bring all the rain gear...it definitely won't rain at all on our trip...haha.

I love your pics! My daughter had a bad haircut when she was about 2 courtesy of her big brother. I thought I was going to have to get it cut into a mullet just to make it look half decent. Luckily, the hairstylist I went to was great and gave her a really cute, but short, haircut.
I like your DD's taste in rides. ToT is my fave, too!

That sounds very familiar :D Our last day my BiL and one of my nieces were at the very top of Grizzly River Run and DD5 and I were just starting Mulholland Madness when the sky opened up on us. I had to put my poncho over DD and caught the full splat of it as we rolled through the ride. Meanwhile BiL and niece's "raft" stopped at the top of the mountain. They were trapped up there totally exposed for about ten minutes. He said you couldn't see 5 feet in front of your face!
When we got off we met up with other family members met at the rotunda and had to wade through areas of 6-8" inches of water as all the drains started to back up. It was a heckofa end to the day - lol
We had good rain gear from G.I. Joes which will still work and DD11's old gear fits DD8, so we just need to pick up new gear for DD11. I think it is worth bringing along and can save a bad day. If we can stay in the parks and they keep the rides open we can ride and ride and ride

Yeah, the poncho thing just doesn't work for anything other than a drizzle. We didn't pack extra shoes so for the second n third day of our trip we weren't able to get our shoes dry overnight and just ended up putting on socks followed by plastic bags, then our wet shoes! Live and learn :thumbsup2

Well I don't generally call myself a 'crafty' person ...unless we're talking about a definition that leans more towards "sly" and less towards thing involving glue, scissors, and fabric :D But yes, I did make the calendar. It was mostly photoshop - I already had the LGMH template and just substituted numbers for the names and set them up to print out 6 per page. I just printed 'em and cut them out with a paper cutter and put them on a piece of red construction paper that I stuck ot foam backing ...both of which I found at ye ole dollar tree. I also printed out the four character pics for the corners and cut them out. The whole thing is put together with double-sided tape because I am absolutely horrible with glue :D
I'm hopeful about the ADRs ...the reservation in question is at Fulton's Crab house so hopefully between it being at DTD and in January they'll be able to cut me some slack.
Ok followed you over from my own report. :lmao: your itinerary looks great. Too bad u leave the day we arrive, I hope to see a lot of disers but probably won't.

Thanks for the compliment on the itenerary, like everyone's it's a work in progress ;) Yeah, too bad about the timeframe, but there are a lot of DISers there at the same time as you. As a matter of fact I just looked back at the January 2008 thread and you'll be arriving at the same time as a good dozen other DISers! Anne's Family ROCKS for keeping up with that list :cool1:
Yeah, I can't stand the summer levels of humidity - my fam lives in central Georgia and I have nightmares of suffering through the July/August heat n humidity. I'll try and keep you posted as we progress through our little adventure :thumbsup2

Yes, when we were at DL it rained off and on and we had to take them off and on because as soon as the sun came out you started to cook in those things. But I'd rather deal with the hastle of doing that than being a drowned rat any day - lol.
Thankyee m'dear, I'm trying to make it interesting :) Yes, once you have so much of it planned a sort of limbo is inevitable. Things will start moving forward soon enough though - glad your paperwork is all together. I'll be happy when I have all of mine in hand

  JUST CROSSED THE ONE MONTH MARK!!!
The planning continues. I purchased our park tickets yesterday - they'll mail out on Monday :woohoo: I also put up our countdown calendar yesterday:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/countdown.jpg
The girls have each gotten to take a LGMH off already - yay! If you look close I did special ones for Christmas and New Years ...hehehe.
I'm still trying to get a firm yes or no from my sister & my nephew and his fiance as to whether they will be staying for DDad's birthday party. Originailly they weren't so I only made reservations for 7 at Fulton's Crab House. Now they will be there but haven't confirmed that they'll be going to the dinner. I know people have had a LOT of problems changing reservations, especially this late in the game  I hope to get ahold of them tomorrow.
All part of life's grand adventure I guess ;)
Today is our one month mark!!! Boy it's going by fast!
I love your calendar~how fun:thumbsup2
You've inspired me, I am going to make one today to celebrate our one month mark. It will help the two little ones understand how long we have left:goodvibes
Love your DL pics. Was it cold and rainy or just rainy? We lived in Riverside for 4 years when I was a kid and we went to DL all the time. We went back for the first time since growing up in 2000. It was my son's first time at Disney~he was 4 and a half. He and we loved it! It was in Oct. and the weather was perfect the 3 days we were there. One of these days we'll go back and my 2 who came after DL , but who have been lucky enough to go to WDW every year since they were 1 can experience it!
* We wished for a baby in the wishing well in Minnie's backyard in toon town and we got our wish times 2:cloud9: So they were there in spirit:wizard: *

It is amazing how many boards there are out there! When I first started out I subscribed to six different ones, but eventually worked my way down to this one :D It just worked better for me than the others, both the design and the interaction with other Disney fans.

I used to look at this other site much more than this one, but after going on the DCL in Dec 05 and meeting some friends for life from the DIS, I pretty much post only here.
Then I found the PTR/TR forums...and well....the rest is history....:rolleyes1

Well today we went out to The Bear Hotel, a warehouse/artist workshop/meeting place for a community-based group that is into promoting art and history in our city. It happens to be located right next to DW's work, so DD's and I have been lucky enough to have a couple of private tours by the place's main benefactor.
I took my camera and took a bunch of pics before I realized I had forgotten to put my memory card back in after dl'ing some pictures the other day. I put in my other card and did get a few pics :D
Here's DD8 with Santa and Mrs. Claus

And here's DD11 just after 'fishing for candycanes'

And lastly a funky monkey and the big bear who they say arranged the festivities

DD8 still belives but DD11 is officially past it. We actually had the conversation with her a couple of weeks ago and just asked her about what she thought of Santa and through the course of the conversation we learned that both Santa and the Tooth Fairy had been found out. Ahh well, as long as she still enjoys the season and doen't say anything to Bean (which she won't) we're good.

Here is the plan.
Get yourself 2 skateboards, and 4 jumpropes.

Feet not sore, and feeling good to go.

OK, tomorrow I promise I'll get back to some actual pre-trip content :lmao:
The whole family has spent today recovering from Fri/Sat. Friday DW and I had a full day of work and doing last- minute prep for ye ole company Christmas party. We had spent the past couple of days loading up our minivan with all the stuff that needed to be taken down to the space that had been rented for the party. MiL would be driving the van to the venue and would have help with unloading and setup.
We then packed up our stuff for overnight and drove 2hrs north to Springfield, OR checked into the Crossland Suites in prep for DD11's first cheer competition. Crossland had THE HARDEST beds I've ever attempted to sleep on. And we were lucky enough to have a room next to a young mom with two small children. Needless to say it was not a restful night :sad2:
6:45am wake-up, shower/food/dress and off to the meet. We were there from 8:30am until 2:15pm sitting on bleachers ...wheeee! :cheer2: Anything for the kids, right :D Here are some shots from her meet:

And finally awards (she's standing on the right) - they caught 3rd
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/kyra/Springfield13.jpg
As soon as it was over we were back on the road to finish the setup for the party. We were back in town by 4:15pm and went straight to the venue to finish up setup. We were done by 5pm and the party started at 6.
It was at that point that we realized that although the ladies all were set for clothes, I needed a shirt. I'm not a shopper and generally let DW handle it, but she needed to get the girls together and do makeup and stuff. All you shoppers out there would be proud ...I went into JC Penny and was pointed to the clearance rack and found a $42 black Pierre Cardin shirt for $15.
Then home to finish getting ready and I drove the van down with the presents. The rest of them followed soon after and we had a very fun evening lasting until after 10pm. Here are some shots from that:

I'll pass on the congrats ...she is already looking to the next meet now and wanting first place of course ;) Yes, she learned all kinds of fun stuff in gymnastics that has carried over very well to cheer. I don't know all the names but it looks really cool on the tumbling runs! Did you do cheer in HS? It's a whole new world for me ...similar to gymnastics and yet VERY different.
Tks for the compliment on the way the ladies looked. I don't think DD11 said a peep about the matching outfits ...sometimes her and little sis actually get along  They got a lot of compliments on those skirts and we actually went and had family pictures done up yesterday in the same outfits :)

Sure, they are photoshop files and are located in the same web directory as the .jpgs. Just click on the link for each and when the image opens up in your web browser change the ".jpg" to ".psd" and it will open a dialog box that will allow you to download the original.
I warn you - these files are 20-25MB a piece. There are also 2 'special' templates that contain the LGMH with the Santa Mickey on the ears and another that contains the 2008 New Year's Mickey on the ears (you can see them on the pic of the full calendar if you squint ;) If you want them I'll pm you the links to them.

Thanks much bud! Oh yes, I made it clear that I wouldn't go to all those practices (I go to one every once in a while), but that I'd be at every competition/game that I could. It's going to get complicated soon though with DD8 getting older and into different sports.

Yup, I dropped off the face of the earth for a couple of days. Mondays are notoriously bad at work, all kinds of network weirdness. And everyone is scrambling to get things done before we close down for the holiday break and avoid having to come in during it. Okeydoke - trip planning!
What we have so far:
plane tickets
resort/accomodations
minivan rental
AAA parking passes for the parks
Sea World/Discovery Cove tickets
All the ADRs
Pirates Adventure Dinner reservations
clothes for DW and the girls
new shoes for all of us for all that walking
electric wheelchair for MiL
a camera backpack full of audio/video equipment
misc. other little things
What we still need:
Park Tickets
some rain gear
clothes for me
custom Dis T-shirts
some accessories for the wheelchair
to print out/laminate our LGMHs
enough patience to get us to the day of our trip!
OK, the tickets ....I was an idiot :headache: and purchased the tickets online after a VERY long day at work & family activities :surfweb: I put in the order and the site gives you SEVERAL times to check over your order. But me in my tired state of mind just kept a'clickin'. Well the end result was that I accidentally purchased too many adult tickets.
Originally we were going to pay for MiL's ticket and she was going to pay us back. But that changed recently and she purchased her own. As soon as I received the confirmation e-mail it clicked in my head and I went    It was after hours so I sent them an e-mail letting them know about the snafu and was going to call in the morning. I checked my e-mail first thing and the e-mail at the top was a Fed-Ex pick slip message stating that they had recieved the order to pick up my tickets and send them out!!!
I called immediately and they were able to stop the order ...needless to say I was very relieved. They immediately credited my card for the extra ticket purchase and everything. But now I'm stuck in this weird holding pattern. The Disney ticket people say it is a matter of getting the original order back from shipping and that when they receive it they can send out the right amount of tickets.
I'm trying to be patient but honestly it is starting to freak me out a bit that they haven't sent them. An agent has a reminder to check the status every morning and is supposed to e-mail me as soon as they have been released. I'm going to call again tomorrow if I haven't heard anything.
We did a try-on of rain gear and DD8 needs a new rain coat and pants and I need new pants. And as I stated I don't like to shop and am pretty lacking in clothes in general so DW is going to drag me to a couple of after Christmas sales (Lord help me) to get some more pants/shorts/shirts for me.
We were going to do custom t-shirts online but it was complicated and we just ran out of time. We have some t's that we still plan on tie-dying with mickey heads n such. Hopefully we'll have some time to get them done over the holidays. :santa:
We ordered some accessories and new tubes for MiL's wheelchair. Unfortunately we ordered them from an outfit in Oklahoma City THE DAY that they first got hit by the ice storm :scared1: They're a bit backlogged and I don't the order has shipped yet - I'll have to call them either today or tomorrow and see if they're back in business.
The custom LGMHs are easy ...I already have templates for all of us and just need to print them out and then borrow DW's work's lamination machine. After that a quick hole punch and strap those puppies to our backpacks/bags :woohoo:
Beyond all the planning for the trip we're just hoping to have a quiet holiday and are praying for good weather for our flight day. Last year at roughly the same time we had a freak snowstorm. I'm not having any part of that darnit! I want a nice calm no frost, no snow, no fog, no rain morning on the 7th! Anything that happens after that I can deal with.
That's it for this update :cool1: I hope the day finds you all well and warm and dry and happy! :) Oh, and let me know if you see something obvious that I've left off the lists. Big stuff mind you, I'll be posting a separate list of the little stuff like sunscreen and ziplock bags 'n such ;)

Lists look pretty good. Doesn't look like there's too much you need yet. But, yeah, tickets would be helpful. I would be completely freaked out by now! You only got a few weeks left there, Colonel Mustard!! I hope they don't end up screwing them up for you!
Yay for after Christmas sales! I love to go shopping after Christmas! I think Bath and Body Works will be having their Signature Collection on sale for $3 each, so I know where I will be shopping after Christmas!

We ordered some rain gear for ourselves...just in case. We tried Bass Pro Shop but they only had expensive stuff. So we went to their website and they had rainsuits for $15 each. SOLD! I hope we don't have to use them too much though.
After Christmas sales can be insane. But I love a good bargain. I use a coupon website all the time for stuff...
http://www.wow-coupons.com/all-printable-retail-coupons.php
I don't know where you go shopping but it's worth a look. I print coupons for places all the time. They add new coupons all the time too. I'm basically obsessed with sales and coupons...haha.
Your lists look good to me! I need to start making some for our trip.

We weren't allowed to do flash photos when DD11 was in gymnastics so I just got a decent DSLR with a very fast lens. It allowed for about 1 out 10 shots turning out pretty good
The girls don't traditionally dress alike ...I think DW pulled one over on them. But neither complained so maybe DW will have some leeway doing it more often :D
Thanks for stopping by and congrats on being (almost) caught up :lmao:
Lists look pretty good. Doesn't look like there's too much you need yet. But, yeah, tickets would be helpful. I would be completely freaked out by now! You only got a few weeks left there, Colonel Mustard!! I hope they don't end up screwing them up for you!
Yay for after Christmas sales! I love to go shopping after Christmas! I think Bath and Body Works will be having their Signature Collection on sale for $3 each, so I know where I will be shopping after Christmas!
Yes, I'm calling the ticket people today ...getting them back to the ticket office shouldn't have taken this long. Yes, we're in the teens now so it is getting pretty exciting!
I'm not looking forward to the christmas sales but it'll be a good test of my 'disney walking shoes' :thumbsup2 I'll have to tell DW about the Bath n Body works sale ...she loves sea salts and stuff like that.
You can never be too sure when it comes to preventing being drenched in a downpour :D We have a place called Bi-Mart that has good stuff for decent prices so I’m going to check there. I’ll forward the coupon link to my DW, she loves a good bargain too!
SO, do you have pics from your family pic? You know us nosey ones wanna see:rotfl2:
Yeah, I cheered from 1st grade to 11th grade. Then, it became too competitve and my coach was jerk and ruined my last 2 years, so I bailed.
Your list looks great, minus the no tickets:rotfl2:
Seriously, if you have your confirmation and your credit card statement that they were charged on, I would not sweat it...
Don't sweat the small stuff, Col Mustard...;)
The family pics will be ready next week – hopefully before Christmas. We didn’t do them as Christmas pics, we were just way overdue for having professional pictures done.
That is quite a stint of cheerleading! What a bummer that your coach was such a jerk. We saw the seniors perform at that meet and the skills and level of competition is scary. The people involved need to try and keep in mind that it is supposed to be fun!
I have an update on the tickets but I want to post it separately ;)
The colonel flatly refuses to sweat the small stuff …hehehe
Thats okay, sometimes it takes me a few weeks to catch up on peoples threads when i get them in the middle of there report.
Does not sound to hard to do, but I might wait until we get a little closer to our next trip to do all that. Dont have the time right now. But I will keep you in mind and might be getting a hold of you for those files again.
Thanks
:thumbsup2
Yup, it is a juggling act and I know we’re all trying to keep up with a BUNCH of reports.
And yes, it’s pretty straight forward to tweak the files – paint bucket should work for the most part. Feel free to PM me if you run into any snags when you get around to doing it.

Nope - no photography or recordings of any type. The choreography is considered "intellectual property" and as such is copywritted to the choreographer. I have seem them stop a competition when someone pulled out a cell phone because it looked like they were going to take a picture.

Well ok, are we having fun yet? We have all of our shopping and wrapping done now and are coasting towards Christmas :santa: The ladies have everything planned for a nice Christmas dinner. Just a quiet couple of days, which works for me :thumbsup2
We took DD8 and her friend to see Enchanted yesterday while DD11 spent the night at a friend's house. The friend just got the game/kit "Rockstar" and came home a bit ago FRANTIC about wanting it :scared1:
We actually picked up Guitar Hero I & II and a wireless guitar for our PS2 so hopefully that will be enough to appease her rockstar dreams - lol We had told them it would be a very lean Christmas due to the trip happening so soon after it but when push came to shove I think we got them everything they asked for anyways :lmao: :lmao:
We got our pictures back from the studio and I just got them scanned in and resized a set for posting. We decided to not the a Christmas shot despite the time of year since we just took one with Santa. Here's the pics:

Yeah, we'll see how it works out for us ...I know DD11 is a natural but DD8 is up in the air. As for me I've never played anything but air guitar(in my misspent youth), but I'm a lefty so we'll see if I can play it upside down or learn to play it backwards to what I'm used to :thumbsup2

I feel for your poor Dd! I'm glad she is feeling better. Braeton has missed 38 days of school so far this year!! I am the one who gets all worried about it though. The ***. Principal just laughs at me. Before they sent the first letter she had the secretary call me and tell me it was on its way so I wouldn't freak out and then she told me she didn't even send me my copy of the last 2. She said at the end of the year they will have to hav an official meeting because said child has had too many absences and they have to compare notes and se why and then they look at his school performance and see if it affected them any. With Braeton it is already known that he will miss way over his days and she said not too worry about it. he is doing fine grade wise and everyone knows he will probably have to miss way more due to his condition.
I love all the background info and aren't your DDs cute in their matching skirts.

LOL, welcome! And I have no idea what you're talking about!
*furtively hides candlestick behind back*
:lmao:
Yes, DW is a dynamo and I often wonder where she gets all her energy from! Volleyball is over now, but cheer has ramped up so she is just as busy! At least now we are through everything except Christmas, which will be pretty low key ...and New Years, which is at someone else's house and they are having the whole thing catered :woohoo:
DD11 is all better now and has finally caught back up on her homework. That was very cool of Braeton's Principal to call before that letter came in and that he is working with you guys on his situation. The school's on a whole seem very flexible as long as they have good documentation from the doctors and such.
Having a child with a medical condition is never an easy thing, but it is wonderful to see how the people around you open up and try to help. Our DD8 was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation of the brain when she was 3 and ended up having brain surgery. Family, friends, and people we didn't even know helped us get through the situation and come out the other end as stonger people and better parents :)
Both girls have their homework packets for the 2 weeks they will be off of school in January and have both already started them!
I'm trying to make this thing interesting and I think it's coming along. And yes, the girls were very cute in their outfits :D
Merry Christmas to you and yours and have a warm and wonderful holiday! :santa:  :santa:

Well hello all! We'uns are now in ...
...
...
...
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: SINGLE DIGITS!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Christmas was great, I was the camera man taking video which I still have to edit. DW did snap this stylish shot of me putting together some of the girl's new gadgets:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/mustardchristmas.jpg
The girls got a bunch of clothes for the trip, and each of them got what they wanted ...for DD11 it was an electronic metronome for her flute playing, a stack of books, and an MP3 player. For DD8 it was an MP3 player, a bunch of horse trading cards with a case, and an electronic talking parrot.
The big deal for me was the present that their Nana (MiL) got for them. The wireless guitar and the Guitar Hero I & II Dual pack :cool2: The whole fam has been playing it but it is really DD11 and I who have been rocking out. I have now finished it on Easy and Medium ...went out with an encore playing, you guessed it - Free Bird! :lmao:
OK, enough about that. Back to trip stuff!
We Got Our Tickets!!!!!!!
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/tickets.jpg
...and our Parking Pass!
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/parkingvoucher.jpg
...and I'm finalizing our trip planner
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/planner.jpg
I have the suitcases inside now and broke out our rain ponchos. We have our lists and DW finds something new to buy for the trip no matter what store she is in. Our Disney card is getting quite the workout :thumbsup2
So now I'm involved in taking down Christmas and getting the house ready for us being away. Luckily our neighbors have agreed to watch our dog and cat for us. The cat is an outside cat so they just need to keep her food and water going and our dog will stay at our place during the day and then go over to their place in the evening.
I have my camera backpack together:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/camerabackpack.jpg
Yes, I am an AV junkie :D I'll be shooting a lot of pictures and some video every day and DL it all to my laptop and then burning everything to DVDs each evening and will go through it all when we get back home.
New Year's is the last hurdle with a BIG party at some friend's house. They're hiring a bartender and everything and we get a guest room so we don't have to worry about driving after :woohoo: They have stuff planned for the kids too (there will be about 20 adults and at least a dozen kids).
If I survive that I have the 2nd and 3rd at work, then all the packing and checking and re-checking lists. And finally Monday morning we jump on a plane to start our adventure :rotfl:
Thank you all for your warm wishes and I hope all of your New Years are wonderful ones!

Wow, I can't believe you are in the single digits already! Isn't it great having that to look forward to??
Nice pj's, Mustard!:lmao:
Sounds like the girls had a great Christmas! I'm coming over to try Guitar Hero! I wanted to get that, but I wasn't sure if the kids would like it. Neither one of my kids is really big into playing a musical instrument. I always was, though. My mom started me out with piano lessons when I was really young and it kind of took off from there. I used to have a guitar, but I never did learn how to play the darn thing. Everything else I played, I taught myself on. Guitar was one thing I could never get, though.:confused3
Sounds like you have a big New Year's Eve planned. I think I'm staying home this year. My grandmother always said, "whatever you do on NYE, you end up doing for the rest of the year." Well, last year I went out and left the kids with my mom. They decided to do sparklers at midnight. Wouldn't you know it, my daughter took a lit sparkler in the eye. We ended up spending NYE/NYD morning in the ER with her. Lucky me, I got to spend a good part of the year in the hospital. I guess gramma was right.
Wow, that's a big camera! Are you lugging that, tripod and all, around with you the whole time?? I can't wait to see the pictures/videos!
YAY for finally getting your tickets!

8 more days, time really does fly doesn't it?!? Are you packed yet???
The NYE party sounds so fun...it will be nice not to have to worry about driving or anything so you can just relax and enjoy yourselves.
I really love the SM ticket. I didn't get one like that:sad2:
We also didn't get a princess/castle one either but that's okay, none of us are into princesses. The boys are fighting over the incredibles ticket though:laughing:

Yes, the days are flying past ...I just hope they last long while we're there! And yes, it is wonderful to look forward to. This time next week we'll be doing our final recheck of our bags and stacking everything by the door to load up.
Thank you for the kind words on my PJs :D I was missing the santa hat that time around, it really completes the ensemble :lmao:
I have always liked music but was never patient enough to learn an instrument. I even owned a bass for a couple of years but never got past some basic notes/chords. Guitar Hero is MUCH better and easier - even if you aren't musically inclined you can still have a great time playing it :thumbsup2
Yes, it should be a fun New Years, but I am going to keep things pretty low key personally - just have a couple of beers and take some pictures of the fun. Yikes! Sparklers in the eye are not a fun thing to get a call on when you're out having "grown-up" time :scared: I hope DD was ok.
No, I won't lug it all around. I'll probably bring the camera itself and an extra lens each day and bring more equipement for special stuff like the fireworks n such. I'll be posting a BUNCH of pics when I come back, you can count on it!
And yes, a VERY big relief to have those tickets in hand. There is still arguing over who gets which cards though. I, of course, have dibs on the Increcibles!
Glad you guys had a fun christmas and everyone got what they wanted:goodvibes
That's a nice camera set up you got there...can't wait to see all the great pics:yay: I just know your TR is going to be GREAT!!!
Keep us updated on your last week...good luck with the christmas decorations.
Yes, a great but mellow Christmas, just what I was hoping for. I've spent a couple of years building up the camera equipment on my meager budget, but I'm very happy with what I have now. The lenses should give me some good options on what I can capture.
Nope, not packed yet, but we have a long weekend to finish that up so I'm not worried. We have the lists, which is the important part. I just need to make sure everything fits in the suitcases!
New Years should be a kick, we've been to parties thrown by these people and it is always a great time. Yes, the only bummer with the tickets was that the tinkerbell one was an adult ticket and the princesses the child ticket. This is reveresed from what both DDs wanted. Ah well, such is life aye?
I'll try and keep everybody up to speed, but it's going to be a busy week!
I want to see pictures on the Picture of the Day thread when you get back! I'll be looking for your clan when I'm there. I'll be harder to find, there's only one of me!
Heheh, I hope to have a couple of shots worth posting there - thank you. And we'll be keeping an eye out for you too ...although you're probably right in that we'll be a bit easier to spot given our numbers ;)
Cheers and Happy New Years to all - I have to get back to taking down Christmas and packing things up!

Well, luckily I was the sober one who didn't have anything to drink. Can't say the same for my hubby. Kyleigh ended up having a "corneal abrasion." They said if it would have gotten any closer, she would have lost her eye. Hubby made such a scene in the ER, I was so embarrassed. He is a very loud drunk.

LOL, well someone has to stay sober enough to see how silly the others end up acting ;) I'm glad Kyleigh's eye was ok. Yeah, I'm sure having an intoxicated hubby in an ER on a busy night like that wasn't fun. Here's to hoping this new year will be a bit less hectic for both your family and mine :thumbsup2

It was a really good time, good family fun with karaoke in the living room, "Rock Band" hooked up to an XBOX 360 and an open bar in between. DW and I paced ourselves and didn't overindulge despite them having a FANTASTIC bartender. Grown-ups and kids alike had lots of fun and we stayed up until after 4am :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Monday: Partly Cloudy - 78 degrees
Tuesday: Partly Cloudy - 80 degrees
Wednesday: 30% chance of rain - 77 degrees
Thursday: Partly Cloudy - 79 degrees
Friday: Partly Cloudy - 77 degrees
Saturday: Mostly Sunny - 77 degrees

Howdy all! We're pretty busy here packing and rechecking lists and such. I have my binder together with more info than I'll probably use. It has:
Reservation confirmation for our flights
Reservation confirmation for our rental van
Reservation confirmation for our Resort
Reservation confirmation for Discovery Cove/Sea World
Reservation confirmation for our Pirates Dinner
ADR confirmaiton numbers
Contact info for everywhere we're going
Itenerary and other DIS info
A list of things to pick up when we get to Orlando
A pouch with our tickets and Disney Dollars
Another pouch with our customized maps
I have all camera/vid camera batteries charged, our GPS charged, my pocket PC and laptop charged, our PSP charged, and fresh batteries in everything that takes them :thumbsup2
We have some stuff packed and everything else being piled up and organized for packing. I have a short list of things we'll be picking up at the store today.
I printed out the custom LGMH shirt logos last night and we have 3 of them ironed on so far (DD8, DD11, and mine). Here's a pic:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/disshirts.jpg
We'll get the rest of them ironed on today so we can pack them all up.
Oh, and we modified/upgraded the "mom's" parasailing. They will be doing the 10-12 minute "deluxe" flight which takes them up to 600ft and they will be doing it tandem! MiL will by flying with DD8 and my mom will be flying with DD11 :yay: :rotfl: :yay:
The weather is still holding for our flight out on Monday (there's a storm rolling through today and tomorrow which will be dumping 1-2" on the valley floor each night, but it melts during the day and Sunday night is supposed to be better and Monday morning is just partly cloudy :) Orlando weather is still GREAT with only one day showing with any real precipitation over the next week :dance3:
The only problem we're having is trying to not get distracted by a late Christmas present DW suprised us all with. She came home with "Rock Band" for the PS2 Thursday night and the whole family has really enjoyed jamming and rocking out on it  We already had Guitar Hero I & II but played Rock Band at the New Year's party at our friend's house and everyone really loved it.
Well I should get back to work now, still lots to do! Happy DISing to everyone - have a great day! :wizard:

OK, so we're just about there ...all of the bags are packed and stacked in the living room to be loaded in our minivan in the morning. The kids are in bed and completely failing to go to sleep. DW is doing some paperwork in the bedroom. And I'm in the living room going back over lists to make sure we've got it all together.
DW has been working on tie-dyed versions of our shirts and has 3 done, with the rest finishing setting before they go through the wash. We'll iron on the LGMH decal in the morning and they will be the last official items to go into our luggage. Here's what a couple of them look like:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/tiedye.jpg
Basically all is well except for one WEE LITTLE SNAG. I had told you about how great the weather was shaping up in Orlando but hadn't filled you in on the 3 storms that had been blowing through southern Oregon since Friday afternoon.
Weeeellllll, here's what it looks like as of about 30min ago:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/snow.jpg
There is about 3" on the ground now with more coming over night. It is supposed to stop and get back above freezing an hour or two before our flight leaves, but right now I'm none too happy with ole Mother Nature. Push comes to shove I have tire chains and can get us the 35 miles to the airport ...but that doesn't do any good if our flight is fudged.
I guess no trip would be complete without a little drama ...so here's to this being our slice of it and that it all turns out fine. Tuesday we are back to the rain we are accustomed to so if the trip gets bumped a day we'll survive and I had that first day as a "kick around Orlando" day anyways.
If you see me post in the morning it means we were delayed, if you don't see me for a couple of days it means that we're on our way :thumbsup2
If you get a chance - send us some Pixie Dust to get that plane off the ground!

Hey There DIS'ers!!!
Well, it ended up dumping about 4 inches on us but stopped during the night and was looking good until I looked outside in the morning. Lo and behold it had turned FOGGY! I had been watching 3 different forecasts and they all said snow/rain for this AM and no fog on the horizon.
We headed out anyways - shoehorning ourselves and our belongings into our van and drove the 35mls to the airport. On the way there was an accident which backed up traffic for about 20 minutes, but we had left with plenty of time.
We crested the hill heading into Medford, OR and the sun was eating away at the fog a good 90 minutes before our departure time. But we got there and SFO had delayed our flight by 2hrs!!! Right off the bat that put us in a pinch - giving us only 15 minutes at SFO to make our connection :scared1:
They did a backup booking having us sit at SFO until 8pm, then flying down to LAX for an hour layover. Then we'd hit the red eye to MCO, getting in at 6am!
But then the fog THICKENED and the plane they sent from SFO circled until it ran low on fuel and then diverted to Eugene. It refueled there and flew back down to us and circled some more. Finally at 12:40pm they cancelled it and the plane flew back up north. Sigh.
Soooo, we got rebooked from United to Delta flying out tomorrow morning at 6am, connecting in Salt Lake City, and arriving at MCO at 4:30pm. We unchecked our 7 checked bags and loaded it all back up. Instead of driving all the way back we tried to take a bad situation and turn it around. There is a Super8 here in Medford that has a big indoor water slide and heated pool.
DW called and was able to cancel our 1 night stay at an Embassy Suites (we had already called them about our delays earlier). And we booked a room 1/2 mile from the airport for 1/2 the price of the suites. We had a great lunch at our fav place Elmers and then came back so the girls could finally SWIM and SLIDE!
Here's the slide with DDs and DW climbing up
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/pool01.jpg
Here's DD11 going down head first AND backwards :D
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/pool02.jpg
Here's DD8 proving she could do it too!
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/pool03.jpg
And here I am getting swallowed by the undercurrent :rotfl:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/pool04.jpg
So we spent about 2 1/2hrs in there and had the place to ourselves. Came back to the room and rested and later I ran out and grabbed some food. We're heading to bed now ...just after 9pm. We have a 3:45am wake-up so we can be back at the airport and check in at 4:30am. This way we will get seats together since Delta wouldn't let us get assigned seats ahead of time.
Cross your fingers folks, we're still working our way there. We haven't missed out on any Dis fun as we only had a trip to the big Mickey D's and maybe the Ripley's museum planned for Tuesday. And we will still get there in time to meet up with me mum just after they check in to the timeshare and head out for our first event - the Pirates Adventure Dinner! pirate: pirate: pirate:
Cheers and have a good one all - wish us luck!!!

Hello All!
Well, we made it out the next morning ...had to get up at 3:45am to make it there by 4:30am for seat assignments. We managed seats together for both legs with both girls still getting window seats :-] But we did all have to go through the "extra special screening" because we changed our tickets. That is apparently a flag for TSA - ugh It made us the last ones to board, but we still took off 5 minutes early.
We flew into Salt Lake City, which was at an invigorating 20 degrees outside. Even the Great Salt Lake was showing signs of freezing:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/Dis08_002.jpg
We landed just before 5pm and picked up our bags, which were very easy to spot thanks to the lime green pom-poms Nana and the DDs put on them. Also notice the little laminated LGMHs on them ...each one had our DIS names or nicknames on them:
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/Dis08_003.jpg
Next was the rental pick up ...got a brand new Town and Country with double sliding doors and a BIG cargo area behind the rear seat - yay!
By the time we got out of there we had to put the pedal to the metal and get to the resort. We met up with my fam and had enough time to dump our bags and splash some water on our face before heading back out the door to go to The Pirates Adventure Dinner!
There was a pre-show and buffet which wasn't bad, but we got there too late to have a decent place to sit. We were assigned the "Orange" pirate, Andre and he lead us into the main theater. Similar seating to a Midevil Times, except there's a big ship in the middle instead of a horse arena.
There was no flash photography allowed and it was kind of dark, but I have a fast lens for just such occasions so some shots came out pretty good.
There was much buckling and swashing and dancing about
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/Dis08_013.jpg
And acrobatics played an ongoing role

DD8 finally caught up in time for a final shot with the Pirate Queen
http://ronin.roguecc.edu/Orlando2008/Dis08_012.jpg
As an interesting aside my Dad left the show towards the end to grab a smoke and check on their dog who unfortunately had to sit in the truck during the performance ...she's a traveling dog and is used to it. While he was out there the pirate queen came out to catch some air. As soon as she saw their dog she came running over.
Oh, I should say that their dog is a 100lb rottweiler named Precious. She said hi and asked if she could pet her and fawned all over her. She was also nice enough to ask if she could get them anything and he asked for a cup of ice for Precious. Just then she heard her cue to come back inside but promised to send some out. Sure enough a waiter came out a couple of minutes later with a large cup of ice :-]
After the show we headed back to the resort, took showers, and collapsed into our beds.
What does Day 2 bring us? When do we wake up? Where do we go? Will I be able to navigate WDW's convoluted road system???
Tune back in and see!!!!

Well it has taken us a couple of days to get settled in, but we are back and I'm happy to say the return trip was uneventful and we were all able to catch up on some sleep ;)
I'm going through folders full of photos and have picked up the film from our underwater cameras used at Typhoon Lagoon and Discovery Cove. I spent a chunk of yesterday typing out the main events of our last few days (I had tried to write it out every 3 or 4 days durning the trip so I wouldn't forget stuff).
Tomorrow I hope to get Day 2 posted, but it'll depend on how wrapped up I get with the pictures. Thanks for checking in all!

Yes, the show was worth going to, just don't go there for the food ;-] And living in the northwest, indoor pools are a must! The Town and Country was great. It handled well, got decent gas mileage, was comfortable, and I loved the extra cargo space behind the rear seat.

Yup! I managed to crank out one anyways  Then I got buried by the pace of the vacation. Thanks about the pics, it took some going through to find some good ones to post.
Yes, there were a couple of very talented acrobats, they really took the show to a "higher" level ;) I'll see about getting a real update out very soon.

Yup, made it in one piece. Sorry I couldn't do more updates, but I have a LOT of material to put into the rest of them. And the rest of the trip was fantastic, if a bit tiring and wrought with the standard perils of vacations (getting lost, sick kids, tired family members).

Glad u were able to get out and get there.

It was fun - give it a try next time. You're very welcome - glad to! Yes, fog is the bane of our flying existence up here. The first week there was very nice with temps in the high 70s and almost no rain. The weekend brought a storm with warm weather but a couple of downpours.
The following week was a bit cooler but no more precipitation until Thursday afternoon. All in all I can't complain about the weather we got - it didn't mess up anything we wanted to do other than making me switch a couple of events.
I'm playing catch up. I'm only on page 10 or 11 so far.
Yay for Guitar Hero! We played it at my sisters house a couple weeks ago. then we just HAD to buy it for ourselves too. We are addicted. I am terrible but it's fun. I mostly play "hit me with your best shot" over and over. Haha.
You posted a picture of your tickets. We haven't gotten any tickets in the mail. Should I be worried?? We leave in 10 days.
Hehe, yes - both Guitar Hero and Rock Band are not the gaming staples of the household. I haven't picked it up since we've been back, but I know once things settle a bit more I'll be picking up ye ole plastic guitar again :woohoo:
I'm all caught up now.
That stinks about the weather on your way out. But glad it looks like you're enjoying yourselves now! have fun!!!
Yay for being caught up! Yes, we got in the groove and had a great time!
Can you believe they're still there?
LOL, it was a long couple of weeks, that's for sure!
Oh Colonel, are you home yet????
Home now and re-acclimatizing to the cold northwest and the pacific time zone :thumbsup2

I've got the first day's worth of pics sorted ....there's 50 of them so it'll have to be a two-parter. I'm working on the first part now - wheeee!
Darn those candlesticks! I need to get some night vision or something :lmao:
The stuff that's coming? Oh, all kinds of stuff. DW and the other ladies did some MAJOR shopping both on property and at the discount outlets. All I have in there is a mug and a couple of T-Shirts ;) But I'm sure there are some nice little treasures in there.
