Hello all,
We are traveling to WDW next October and are taking extended family with us. We will eat most meals together, but for the 2 or 3 that our cousins eat alone, will they be able to use the DVC discount on their food (as long as they're at a participating restaurant?)? They'll have the KTTW cards and on that, it says DVC. Will that suffice to get the discount, or will they need our card so they can show it at those meals?
Thanks!

They may need the blue member card to get the discount.

..or they may not need the members blue card. I know my DS, DDiL did get the discount at Artist Point with just the room key.

This past October, we had to show the blue membership card to get the 20% discount at Fresh and Picabu (both in the Dolphin Resort). Actually had to sign something at Picabu - that seemed odd to me since it is like a cafeteria.

Eat at Fulton's for lunch and get 30% off.

I hate when you have a discount program and they make you jump thru hoops to get it...or worse you need to argue for it.

??? All you have to do is show your DVC blue member card. Is that difficult? It should keep non-members from getting the discount that they are not entitled to.

We have always shown the blue member card at S/D, but as I said, we've never been asked to show it when our room key said DVC member. DH ALWAYS has his blue member card with him just in case.

PS. I do consider my offspring as part of the DVC family, maybe others don't, but where would you draw the line...adult children living at home, away, at college? If they couldn't get the discount, I'm ok with that, but why not try?

Thanks for the replies. Since it's a mixed audience, I'll just allow them to use the blue DVC member card and we'll use the DDE card when we eat separately (which, like I said, sounds like it will only be about 3 times the whole trip). I hope that's not bending the rules. I guess I assume that since they are staying with us on points that trip, they are guests of a member and would get that discount if they were eating with us, so they can use it when not eating with us . Bobbiwoz, your "PS" got me thinking about that... Again, I'm not trying to break the rules. I'd say your children ARE part of the DVC family and even if they live away but are staying in your villa on points or with you, I'd think they can have the discount. Just my two cents though... I've been wrong before!

Just back from our first trip. Unfortunately we forgot our blue cards at home and did not feel up to traveling to SSR for temps. So, for furture reference, do you have to tell the servers before you sit down that you are entitled to the DVC discount? We figured that by charging the meals to our room that we MAY get some of the discounts, since our card says DVC Member" but no go. Oh Well a learning year for us.

To the best of my knowledge, you do NOT have to tell the server when you start your meal that you get the discount. Just show them the DDE or your blue member card, and they'll take that with the bill to apply the discount.

We never tell anyone in advance that we plan to use the DVC, AP or DDE discounts. We just tell the server when the bill arrives - usually just include the membership or DDE card with the credit card (or KTTW card). It's never been a problem.
We've never been asked in advance if we were going to use a discount, just if we were on the Dining Plan. And it appeared to me that asking about the DP was just so the server could explain what was (and occasionally wasn't) included in the plan.

Of course you are bending the rules. Perhaps you don't care or others don't care, but the bending of rules leads to the diminution of discounts for those of us who DON'T bend the rules. JMHO. BTW, we have always been asked for our BLUE member card for the dining discounts, and typically we have had to either sign something separate, the card had to be copied, or a manager had to do the transaction.

I think that different CMs handle this differently. In Nov. I ate at Mara (AKL). Used my room key to charge my meal and got a 10% DVC discount. I didn't even know Mara gives a DVC discount, but apparently the CM saw "DVC" on the room key.

just back from family gathering Friday, I provided each couple in the group a studio, on there room keys it showed DVC member, my parents added a cc to there room so they could charge, they eat at different times and places on each receipt they had showed a discount on it and I was not present nor was my blue card. I was surprised.

OH boy am I confused now! When we were there in Nov. we charged all of our meals to the room and never once did we see the 10% DVC discount applied. We did not have our blue cards with us, we forgot them at home and did not feel like taking the time to go to SSR to get temps., so we just hoped that some of the servers would give us the discount. I guess I should have asked about it.

We just take out the member card with our credit card when we are paying for dinner. We always use the Costco 123 American Express when eating out because we get triple points for eating out. If we pay with the KTTW even if we have left the American Express, the total bill will be put on the card as travel and thats only double points.
