Anyone want to start a thread concerning the half/full Marathon for 2009, I know its early but I figure we can start chatting about it. I ran Disney I think in 2001 and am looking forward to running it again. Unless there is already another thread, lets get one going. Lets talk about whatever, training, goals, whatever ...
By the way, unless the moderators object, I wouldn't mind leading this group in some way, I would enjoy it, let me know, thanks

I am planning on running the half-marathon in '09. I am a new runner (just began about a month ago). Am starting small with a 5K on 12/1/07 and then hope to run a few more 5K's and a few longer races in the spring and summer. My sister is planning on running the half with me. She is currently pregnant and due the beginning of april. she is anxious to get fit after the baby is born. I never thought i would get anywhere close to runner or a race so the fact that I have actually started is a big deal for me! Thanks for starting a thread!

Y'all are welcome to come and join us on the weekly WISH team thread! Many of us will set our sights on the 2009 marathon weekend once the 2008 races are over. We have no particular group leader, just a bunch of folks that hangout and talk about various races that we do throughout the year. We have walkers, runners, triathletes...anyone's welcome!
Hope to see you there!

I hope to be completing my 4th Goofy in 09. Great idea as in 2 1/2 months, the 08 races will be over and registration for the 09 races starts 1/14/08. For those Goofy runners, better signup before the end of Jan 08!

I am definately doing the 09 Half - who knows by that time I might be goofy enough to sign up for the Goofy!!! Congrats JenLynn for getting started running. That is the way it starts. Once you do your first and second race you will be hooked. I am especially hooked after running my first Disney race (now I am hooked on Disney races) I started running in June and that was too late to sign up for the 1/2 marathon in 08 so I am definately doing the Minnie Marathon weekend - the 5k and the 15k.

Does anyone know when the DVC/Cast Member Registration forms come out? Any chance they would have the 2009 forms at the 2008 Expo? I would like to save a couple of bucks if possible.

Bill: I am into saving money and was able to push Disney for the DVC app for the Goofy by the Friday after the race. I posted it on my website as soon as I received it. I will post it on the forums that I have it online. They won't have them at the expo.
I mailed the app will still at WDW. You have nothing to worry about unless you are doing the Goofy. The Goofy was 40% full after 5 days(that Friday):scared1:

Think for about 28 days and you won't have to worry about it:lmao:
I talked to the RD about increasing the Goofy #'s and he said they were think about it. If they don't raise the 3000 number, it will fill in 2 weeks. A lot of runners got caught off guard when it took 6 months to fill the 07. They thought they had more time and they were wrong:eek:

Based on the fact many more may rush to sign up for the Goofy after missing out this year, would people recommend signing up ASAP (and foregoing the approximately $10.00 DVC savings) if it is something one seriously intends to pursue? Is there is a real chance the Goofy would close prior to getting the DVC Application and it being received by Disney Sports via mail?
By the way Boo-boo, eventhough I participated in diverse sports as a kid and through college, I don't recall any one (be it coach, spectator, friend or family) ever using the term "natural" in the same sentence as my name and the sport I was doing. ;)

As a fellow New Englander (Connecticut), I thought I'd add that I am going to WDW for the half alone this year (and with a hundred or so WISH team mates) and contemplating the Goofy for 2009 as well. I will probably be alone for that too. My 4 kids would love to come with me, but DW isn't a big WDW fan and the kids have school and their activities are in full swing at that time of year. Even though I still can't make it to the bottom of my driveway (which is only about 50 feet long) without getting swept, I am determined and like setting goals (some more attainable than others).

You know, alone probably isn't that bad... at the Minnie I hung out with WISHers at the beginning of the race, but felt like I needed to rush back to the family when I finished. I would love to stay and cheer on WISHers at the end and take the group photos and just revel in the moment.
While I love having my family with me, it might be liberating to not have to do that balancing act. Wait- substitute "would be liberating" for "might." ;) Hey- maybe those of us bringing the whole crew can loan out a kid or two. My little one is a huge fan of the Dumbo ride, while the big one is into the big mountain rides- see something for everyone! :rotfl:

Jen: I agree with the alone theory. I had DFs and DH at ToT and that did not work so well for me. I enjoyed the race but missed ALL the WISH stuff so I was bumming inside :sad2: and being a good friend outside.
Bill: I live in the darkest woods of Maine and I lived on a military base in Georgia (my first real world experience at 18:scared1: ) so...you can't scare me no matter how bad the BMZ is. As my DH says, I have 1 feeling left and, honey, I bet you can't touch it either!!! :lmao: I will be running the half and walking the full is probably a better goal for me so.........:rolleyes1

Does anyone know how it works if you sign up for the half but then decide you want to do the full or go Goofy can you "upgrade"?? I am almost positive I will do the 1/2 in 2009 but hearing talk of getting a Mickey medal sounds great. I am not sure what my level will be in another year but as of right now I know I could do the 1/2 in 2009 (since the 8 miles at TOT didn't seem too bad - whats another few miles!!:rotfl2:) but I may be up to the level of the full or :scared1: the Goofy!!:scared1:

I am toying with the idea also. I know I will run the Donald but I could definitely walk/run the full and still finish in decent time. I am unsure about the "upgrade" option but from the sounds of the other threads, it seems that the Goofy fills quickly so we should probably get an answer to this before making a full decision!!!

Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a few weeks, so I decided to come out of hiding. :) I'm new to all of this, but my goal is to do the Half in '09. I've only recently started, but I'm walking about 2-3 miles a day, 3 or 4 days a week right now. (With a little running thrown in here and there.) It will be slow going, but I'm very excited about getting into better shape and the thought of running through my favorite place on earth!

Easy for you maybe. Remember, we are starting from different places. The ToT 6.5K was my first "race" ever and I had a bicycle EMT escort following me. It wasn't reassuring listening to them making bets as to how far I would make it before they would have to jump in with oxygen and paddles. I did test their bike riding skills though, as a couple of them had to stop and put their feet down to regain their balance based on my blazing speed they were trying to keep pace with.;)

cguill, what marathon in Sept 08?
princessrunner - Girl! Never say "just" a 1/2.;) Yeah, the Goofy filled quick this year. Good luck. If you sign up for the Goofy, and find it is not what you want to do...you can always choose your event...(marathon or 1/2 marathon)...I know it is a lot of $$$ though.

Christa: I am happy to say "just" at half. A year ago in October, I puffed my way through my first 5K at a blazing speed of 33:33. This year, I casually jogged with my NR friend through the 6.5K at ToT and kicked myself in the butt for not signing up for the 13K (although he would have probably died and needed Bill's EMT's)!!!! :scared:

**Christa** and anyone else reading, please know that the above portion did not actually happen. Although I was having back problems, the only thing I heard from WISHers, other runners/walkers and volunteers was support. I was very encouraged by everyone at the race, making it a great first event.

Bill- well, ok, the bike guys didn't heckle you. But it's a funny story...
I ran a 5k in January with a cop car next to me the entire last mile. The cop turned on his siren and yelled at me through the window. OK, really he was cracking up when he turned on his siren for a couple of seconds and he was very encouraging telling me not to worry and that he couldn't run it at all yada yada. I still like to tell people he was next to me with the siren blaring! That's the beauty of being DLF- the girl in front of me wasn't that far ahead, but she wasn't having nearly the fun I was!

As for future events, I'm signed up for the Jacksonville Half in December. My goal is to run it reasonably fast just so I have some idea of my pace. Then I'll always know I could have run the Goofy at a decent pace, but I chose to take pictures and play instead. ;) I don't know about Goofy 09- maybe Donald 09 is more my speed...

Gator - my normal everyday running pace is usually btwn. 7:20 - 7:45 per mile pace depending on the day. I did not start that fast when I started running in 1999 it was mainly to lose weight, which I did. I went from 200 pounds down to 155-160. My speed just increased over time with consistent running and training and lots of hard work, I enjoy it though, and unfortunately, I am competitive which is not always a good thing.:goodvibes
My Half Marathon PR is 1:19:39 and my Marathon PR is 2:55, which I hope to break in the next year or two.

I too started running to lose weight. But it is now therapy for me:cloud9: . I went from 150 lbs(at my 1st marathon) to 110 lbs (my current weight). I run around 8:40 - 8:20 in a normal run...my 5k PR I ran with a 7:40 pace....but don't think I could have kept it up any longer.

Does anyone have any sites or books they can recommend for a beginner - I'm looking for training schedules, nutrition, etc. I have a treadmill I plan to use at home until it warms up in a couple of months. I was told that I should be training outside but the snow is starting up and I know if I start running outside, I'll slip and break something :)

I will be running the 1/2 in 2009 and I'm glad to see there are lots of others planning on doing the same. It will be my first 1/2 and I plan to start training in a couple of weeks.
:welcome:
Starting this early will really give you a great base! I would just start out to train to train. He He, that was funny. The dreadmill will be fine to start. I think it is harder than running outside...b/c it is boring.
I have heard that Marathoning for Mortals (I think this is the name) is a good book for beginners. It is good to start on a walk/run...do not feel you have to run the whole time.
GOOD LUCK! Everyone here is great to give help so post often.

Hi bunnyfoo --- welcome !!! I have a few ideas for you. Go to www.halhigdon.com -- Hal has many different training programs and has trained a ton of new people thru their first Marathon. He has free training plans as well as programs you can purchase. Most of his plans will be for 18-26 weeks, something like that. Until you want to start the program I would try and build up your miles to what the program will have you doing. I don't know where you are from, but local running stores are also great places to hook up with for training and having groups to do long runs with. If I think of more I will let you know, that should be a great place to start ..... :thumbsup2
Also, UltraMickeyMouse has a website www.disneyrunning.com & www.disneyrunning.com forum --- the forums may be a great place to get support as well.

Just barely getting out there every so often and only doing 2 miles at most. But I do know I definately want to sign up for 2009 but not sure if I want to do the half or the full. I am sure as of right now I can do the half (I mean 13.1 miles is not much more than the 8.1 I just did at TOT) but I REALLY REALLY want a Mickey medal so my DH thinks I should just plan on the full for 2009. I have a year to train so I am sure I should be able to do it - its just that 26.2 is a LONG LONG LONG way!! LOL

After almost a week off due to the holiday(I know, bad excuse!) I finally went back to the Y last night. Instead of the treadmill, I went upstairs and checked out their indoor track. It was pretty nice actually, and was sooo much better than walking to nowhere on a treadmill! There were four "sides", 2 short, and 2 long. I walked the longs and ran the shorts after my warmup walking. The further I went, the better I felt! I lost track, but I probably went close to 3 miles. I have to work tonight, but I plan to go back and do it again tomorrow!
I hope everyone is doing well!! :)

I have been really sick since after Thanksgiving but today I actually ran again. It was only 2 miles before the pain returned, but I RAN!!! Hopefully, the minor derailment is back on track finally. Even if I have to build back up, just getting back out made me feel better!!

WOW! All you speedy people! I don't even feel worthy posting here. But, I will anyway. :teeth:
I haven't decided what I'm going to do for 2009. Probably the half. I'm participating in the '08 marathon and hoping to survive it one piece. I have to say that the main reason I signed up for the full was to get that special Mickey medal and now I'm starting to doubt my sanity. I am so not ready at this point. I have a feeling that I'll be crawling at the end....if I even make it make it that far. :scared: I guess as long as I can crawl at a 16-minute pace, I'll be ok. :scared: I'm sure Bill's EMT buddies will be following me around. ;)
As for the Goofy filling up fast this year, I wonder if it's because of the special Mickey medal/15th anniversary? I may have to try for that some day...if I can lose some serious weight. Maybe by Mickey's 20th anniversary. :thumbsup2

I'm sorry if I missed this, but does anyone know the dates yet for 2009? I am assuming it will be January 10-11, but would hate to be wrong. Howard and I are planning a vow renewal to be scheduled based on the marathon dates, and I want to be sure I have the right weekend in mind.
Thanks! :grouphug:

Thank you so much, Robert! We had already requested a date from Disney Fairy Tale Weddings based on my memory or guess (don't recall whether I'd actually heard the date or seen it somewhere, or if I'd guessed it. :lmao: ). I feel much better now, knowing I don't need to revise my request.
Have a great day!

My mind is made up, look out it will be the Goofy for me in 09.
Will even do the 5K, one thing that worries me is the weather and training, I have a very tough time on the treadmill.
Got out for a 6 mile run today, wore the yak tracks.
See ya all there in 08 and 09.

Bumping this up...
I am starting to get depressed posting on the other thread b/c everyone is focused on WDW...not that I blame them.
Just thought I would get this going again to talk about races other than WDW...:goodvibes
How is everyone doing?

Christa - I know you're just getting over Charlotte, but what's next on your horizon?
I've got the Goofy coming up (but we don't want to talk about that here;) ) and then probably the Wirefly National Marathon in D.C. at the end of March. The only problem is that the National Marathon would make 4 fulls in about 10 months:eek: . I may just go for the half depending on my state of mind come late Feb.

Well, I think my dh and I are going to do the 1/2 in 2009. I had lapband surgery on 12/7 and am committing to exercise and weightloss this year. I can't think of a better motivator and reward than completing the Disney 1/2 marathon!
