Does anyone have a Flip video camera? If so, how is it? I am thinking of getting one specifically to make videos of my WDW visits of course so i can post them to youtube . How is the quality of the camera and subsequent video.? How about battery life? Any comments would be great!
I have one and it is absolutely perfect for me. It will be more than adequate for YouTube. I bought it because it was small enough to carry in my purse and actually have it available when I wanted to use it, unlike my big ol' video camera that I've filmed maybe an hour's worth in 5 years. Haven't paid attention to how long the batteries last, but it hasn't been a problem for me.

Okay, I read the short and limited posts I could find about the Flip Video recorder. I'm wondering who has used it in WDW... did you love it? hate it?

I took my FLIP to the Hannah Montana concert and was very pleasantly surprised. The sound was not terrible at all- especially in light of the legions of screaming little girls!!! My only negative was that the zoom is very limited. However, we have been to Disney so many times, that I would only be filming my kids anyway- so do I really need my zoom anyway? I am thinking no.....:wizard:

I've got a Flip video recorder (very cool, size of an iPod or smaller) that stores 60 minutes of video. I'd like to take it to the parks and use it as my only video recorder because it's so handy.
Does anybody know if I can download video from the camera on to a DVD somewhere in the parks? I've heard you can download digital photos to a disk at the camera centers...but video?
The camera has pop-out USB plug so it just plug right into a USB port to download.
Thanks,
Mike

Has anyone heard of this or does anyone have it? When full, can you download video to computer and burn it to DVD? Is it worth the money?
Thanks in advance.

Do you have a link to one?
I can't imagine a video camera that will not download...

We got one each for my stepson and his wife for Christmas last year. They were expecting their first baby in January, so we got him a black one and her a pink one. They had also bought a good video cam for themselves, but they tell me they use the flips all the time.
As for quality, I've only seen the videos on the flip itself. They have not posted them yet, so I can't say how good they'll be. On the small flip screen they look great and it sure is convenient and easy to use. There are some reviews with videos on Amazon you can look at.

I guess that was a silly question, what I am trying to find out is does it just have internal memory only or is it expandable? :confused3 I do not know anything about digital video cameras as I have never had one and would be curious to find out any information at all on this one.

I'm still lost. Is it a special model called flip or is it a regular camera with a view screen that flips around so the people in front of the camera can see themselves?
As far as downloading there are many options, most of which I do not know. heheheee
Ours is a digital camera that records on tape. other record to dvd or to flash memory or a hard drive. I guess the difference in downloading is whether you can drag a file to the computer or if you have to play the video to record it to the computer.

It's a small portable video camera called a Flip.....
http://www.amazon.com/Video-Ultra-Camcorder-60-Minutes-Black/dp/B000V1PXMI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1207710115&sr=8-1
The larger one can hold about an hour of video. It must then be transferred via USB to your computer, and then you can upload it to video sites or copy onto storage media.
You can read more about it on the product info.

Thanks for trying to help Mikeeee! I am obviously still confused about this video cam myself. It is an actual video camera. I do not have a link, looked it up at Target last night and they don't give too much info on it. I learned about it from a lady I work with every now and then, she has one and loves it. but she had just got hers when she told me about it and was still learning. She was supposed to clue me in, but I haven't seen her since. According to her it is very easy to use, but that is about all she could tell me.
Thanks again,
Kelly

That stinks, the original model could use Memory Cards (we saw them on clearance at Circuit City for about $20 but we already have a nice video camera). Now the new model is more expensive, has lower resolution and no external memory (the only advantage that I see is that it is slightly more compact).

Love my flip BUT it's not a replacement for a good quality video camera. We drug ours around the world this last week. The quality is OK; not great but it is small.
It does not allow for expansion with a memory card and dependng on the model will hold thirty or sixty minutes. It EATS battteries so get rechargeables.
What I love the most is the water case... we had ours in the pool at POP and got some great shots. I'd love to take it the the shark reef at TL.. maybe next time!

Isn't the Flip really targeted at the YouTube crowd?
I think it's got special software included to easily upload video to their site....
It's a great little camera for what it's designed to do, but I don't think it's marketed at the "preserving out precious memories on video" crowd....

It's definitely not for high quality video, although I will say it's pretty darned decent for the size.
I'd agree it's for the YouTube generation, but also it's the one you will have in your purse to catch things you don't plan. It's like P&S vs. SLR. The one you have with you can be better than the bag of equipment at home. It's good to have both.

I recently purchased a flip video camera - it is small and easy so I thought it would be perfect for when we go to Disney World of a few weeks.
Is there anywhere in Disney world that we can download our video's while we are there? The camera only holds 60 minuts of video, and we are there for 10 days. Does anyone know if there is a place we can burn this onto a disk? I thought there might be a place at the Kodac center in Epcot - so if anyone knows, please let me know.

I'm pretty sure they have places you can burn from memory cards... but I would be surprised if they had places where you could hook up a video camera... a lot of those things have proprietary cables... I would think your best shoot would be to take the cable that came with the camera with you on your trip... I might also wonder how much space would 60 minutes of video take... I know on our camcorder we would have to use about 10 gig of hard drive to save 60 minutes of video... you might want to check what format your camcorder saves in and see just how much space you are needing.

Good question! Since the Flip looks like a drive when connected to a PC we would have to find a place that will transfer the files to a CD. The Kodak shops can download a memory card to a CD so I suppose they could do the same with a Flip *as long as the files all fit onto 700MB*. That would not be much video and the shops charge way too much $$$ for this service.
We carry a micro notebook PC (Asus Eee) to download files to. Asus, Dell, and others have tiny 2 pound PCs for less than $400, which is still expensive but it's another option (and you can view the videos on the PC).

I am aware that the picture is much better on the mino then the ultra... but there is no waterproof case for being in rain etc... and if going on holiday without laptop (i have a desktop pc) I wont be able to charge the lithium battery on the new mino will I?
I really cant decide...
I just want to use it for holidays to dlp, for school plays, birthdays etc....something I can use with one toddler on my hip etc and throw in my handbag after...if you see what i mean...

We have a Flip Ultra and like it for what it is, a small, light, inexpensive video camera that is always ready to go in a few seconds. Video quality is ok, and surprisingly good in the dark. It even recorded much of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Our main focus (pun intended) is still photography so we don't need better quality for the "fun" videos we take. The ability to just pop 2 AA batteries in it is a plus for the way we use it.

Funny I just ran into this thread... I'm buying the flip tonight! I'm going for the mino - you can always buy the waterproof casing separately, so I wouldn't base my decision on that at all.
I've heard wonderful things about this little camera. And honestly, I just like little video clips here and there... I don't need anything past that.

Hi we're leaving in 20 days. I've asked this question before but didn't get many replies. I want to bring my flip video but don't know how I can empty it on a usb stick. Is there a spot I can do this? I don't want to bring my laptop so if I can access one I can take as many videos as I want & just empty it.
Thanks :hourglass

You know, I have a Flip Mino and I don't know if you can do a direct transfer to a USB port. I took my laptop and emptied on there. Have you looked over their website or owners manual? It might have something there.
Plus, my Flip needs the computer to recharge, so it served dual duty. I really did enjoy having my Flip there. I love that little thing!

We have a Flip Ultra and afaik the data on the internal memory cannot be transferred to a USB stick without a computer. It is possible the data could be downloaded to one of the photo storage devices but I have not tried it.
We have an Asus Eee that works well for downloading the videos. It is not much larger then many of the photo storage devices and doesn't cost more than some of them.

As I posted in your last thread, there was yet another thread on this topic:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2057015
Scroll down to my post (#9). I link to the Memorex Travelsync, which is likely the only kind of thing on the market (I've never seen anything else like it). USB requires one device to manage the connection, and nobody makes an external hard drive than can do that (and the Flip, well, it doesn't include a SD slot so it definitely won't). If the Travelsync won't work, you need to either take a notebook PC, find a place locally that will let you transfer the video to a different storage device, or get a video camera without that storage limitation.

You could always get a cheap netbook, just make sure that it's compatible and has a USB port. They generally can be found for about $250.

easy answer. With generic flash costing $15-$20 for 8GB, just pick up a few of those.
Even on my HD Aiptek, I get 4 1/2 hours of recording to one 8GB card.
Chikabowa
03-20-2009, 05:32 PM
I don't think there is an external solution, honestly. At least, not one that I'm currently aware of!
However, you may want to re-think your laptop idea. My Flip Mino charges by USB off the computer source. You didn't mention which Flip you got, but I know the Mino and the HD Mino both need the computer to charge.
Furgus
03-20-2009, 08:38 PM
You are going to need at least a PC to dump the footage too. You should just be able to extract it on the hotel PC and pick up a flash drive or 2 to save it to. As long as the USB connections are usable and not locked down, this should work for you.
I have the older 60 min Flip that uses AA batteries. I really want to upgrade to the HD model, but I like the removable battery's and I don't really want to pay for Vimeo + for more the one video upload a week.

I use an external hard drive made by Wolverine that has card slots and connects by usb. That is the only way I know how. Those cost as much as a FLIP and you would not be able to see until you get home. I do not have a Flip so I do not know if that would even work or do you "process" it when you download!

Currently there is no easy way to empty out a Flip without having a computer.
Therefore you might want to consider a different brand or kind of video camera.

My in-laws just gave me a Flip Mino HD, which I must admit is a great little video camera. I think it will get a lot more use than our normal video camera.
However - a question. They can only take 1 hour of video, which is not an issue if we are at home and can use our computer asap. Does anyone know if you can download the videos to a flashcard? We don't have a laptop, so was thinking about what to do while travelling - I'll use up 1 hr of video on the flight down!

The flash card was DH's idea - I don't see how it can work, but will ask at our local electronics store when I get the chance. The FLIP is a great little gizmo, but without a laptop I can't see it being any good away from home. I e-mailed tech help at FLIP and they said it's been done, however they couldn't recommend any particular products - they suggested I check out a message board, and thought of this one immediately!
Maybe I can drop hints to the inlaws and get a laptop next :rotfl:. No - wouldn't dare! They were great to get it for me, and it is really convenient to take anywhere and use easily, but it won't replace our old video camera when we travel, like I'd originally thought. The zoom is not very good either, so there are some limitations.
Thanks for your reply Dawn. If I get any further info, I'll be sure to post it.

I was looking at the Flip and the similar offerings from Sony and Kodak for the parks as well instead of our huge 10 year old Sony camcorder. I looked at the features and storage. I don't want to bring a laptop, zoom was limited so those were cons for me. The size was pro. I ultimately ended up buying a Canon FS200 camcorder last weekend and have been messing around with it during the week and so far I'm pleased with it. Yes it's bigger then the Flip but it gave me some features I wanted and I was willing to accept the slightly bigger size then the Flip or Kodak. It was just over $100 more than the non-HD flips but it was worth it to me.

I am thinking of getting a video camera of some sort, and since the flip cams are not as expensive I am thinking of getting one. I'm not getting as much back from income tax this year with changing jobs I'm not as financially set as I had hoped. What I'm looking to film is clips inside rides such as Small World, Pooh, etc. and some shows like Lion King.

I was also wondering about the Flip. My daughter is looking for a in expensive little video camera. With this Flip, can the videos be transfered to DVD? Also, Can you delete clips at the end of you vacation if there is a section that you no longer want?

I looked at them and unless I am missing something they have no Optical zoom only 2x Digital zoom. Major deal buster for me.

Sony has a "Flip-style" that also has an optical zoom feature. It's a 5X I believe.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has taken a Flip MinoHD, Bloggie or other pocket camcorder to Disney World and has video to share or a description of how the video/audio looks. I currently have a five year old P&S that does video, but it's not the best of quality (lots of noise, both in the video and on the audio) and I was wondering if the newest generation of pocket camcorders would be a substantial improvement. I know that the pocket camcorders do not produce the level of quality that a full camcorder would, but I was wondering if they are better than the video that comes with a P&S. I'm especially interested in how they do shooting the night time parades? Thanks!

I'm wondering about this too! I have a p&s that does some video but I'd like to get a pocket camcorder for an upcoming trip and wanted to know if this would be an improvement and what type to get. I've heard lots of good things about the flip cams but not enough to completely sell me on it.

My 12 year old son got a Flip Mini for his birthday this month and has made so many movies we are calling him Cecil B. DeMille. The quality is much better than the video option on the P&S and the ability to edit them and add music is great and very easy on the flipshare software.
We haven't taken it to Disney yet but he did take it to New Orleans over Spring Break and got some good footage of the Mississippi River at night.
I was a little unsure of this but it has turned out to be great. My parents got it at Costco for $129 and it records 60 minutes. You just plug it into a USB port to charge. I think my husband wants his own!;)

Last November I took my Kodak Zi6 with me to Disney World and it worked great. The Zi6 has been replaced by the Zi8 which I think you can get for about $180.
Below is a video my wife shot while we were riding "It's a Small World". It's fairly dark in there so we were pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Oh, and I don't have a high enough post count to put a link in here but just put the www in front on the link below and it should work.

I have the Flip Mono HD and my mom has the Flip Ultra HD and we love them! We have not taken them to Disney yet, but we did take them snow skiing in February and they work great!
I don't have anything upload to the internet to share right now, but I will work on that...
The differences between the Mino and the Ultra.
- The Mino is about 1/2 the size of the Ultra.
- The Ultra uses rechargeable batteries or you can use AA batteries. Mino when the battery is dead you have to charge it. No spare batteries.
- The Ultra has an underwater case! Great for pools, snorkling, keeping the sand out, snow...
Those are just a few that I can think of right off the top of my head. We have not noticed any difference in the video quailty between the two.
The only down side I have notice is when recording while skiing down the mountain at 15-20 mph the video looks a little jumpy. I will try to get videos uploaded to show you what I mean.
I am impressed with the low light level capibilities indoors at night. Everything look super bright. I imigine Spectro would look wonderful using the Flip.
I also used the Flip during my son's band concert in the gym and was super impressed with how it picked up the sound! Like I said we love the Flips! :thumbsup2

I have a Flip Mino, its not the HD version but I am in love with it. I actually won it last year when I wrote a review for my Be-Book (e-reader). And it got the Flip Mino delivered to me on my birthday :goodvibes:
Ive filmed my Disneyland Paris Big Thunder Mountain ride with it :)
Here is the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez0SJ-qjShI
Remember that the HD version got a higher pixel rate.

Find out whether you can swap memory chips (you cannot on the Flips).
It's not until you go on vacation that you run into this problem. Almost nobody can unload the camera onto a DVD so you can keep on taking video so you would need to bring your laptop with you to unload onto.

I've got a Flip and love it. I keep it in my camera bag all the time. It fits in a pocket easily and 2 hours is certainly plenty of space for day to day use and the quality is great. Couldn't be easier to use (its big selling point).
I shot this clip of one of the NASA Solid Rocket Booster Recovery ships returning to port with my Flip a few weeks back:

Another plus is replaceable rechargeable batteries. When you wear out the ones that come with the unit, buy another pack from most places that sell Flips and replace them yourself. No sending it off for service.
Disclosure: I work for the company that recently bough Flip (but dont work in that division).

I have an old Flip (one of the originals) and love it. It's just perfect as we don't shoot a ton of video, but it's nice to have for little snippets.
I want to get an HD one this year - but our old one works great!
I just got a Flip to take on vacation with us this summer, and so far I love it! The ONLY negative is that it doesn't have an optical zoom. But it's small and you can just shove it in your purse/tote bag. We have an older, larger video camera with a great zoom, but nobody ever wanted to lug it around, even though it was only about the size of an SLR. So for me, it was a trade-off: give up the zoom but have a video camera that we'd actually have with us when we wanted to use it!;)
And another note on the Flip batteries: yes, they're rechargeable, but if they die when you're out somewhere and you don't have time to recharge them, you can also use regular AA's.

A minus about the Flip (and also some others I don't recall)
You must bring your laptop on vacation. No one (Walgreens, Ritz, etc.) can upload the video and burn a DVD after it fills up to let you take more, and you cannot swap memory chips.

have two flips and love them both. DW took to DL and had a ball getting her Disney fix to watch! I would suggest the newer model and get an extra battery.

I bought DH a Flip HD for Christmas and we were really impressed with the video quality when we uploaded clips online.
But we found that when we tried to watch the clips on the TV, they were really grainy. I even had my brother who is a mega-techie work with it to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong uploading, but he had the same issues.
The format is definitely made to be viewed on a small screen, in my experience. If you plan to do most of your video sharing online, it's perfect. But, we need to be able to burn DVDs for the non-internet folks in the family.
We ended up taking it back and getting a Sony Handycam. We lost quality on online sharing, but gained it on the TV viewing end.

I just bought the purple one on Amazon friday for $127. I haven't gotten it yet but I've read some good reviews on it & it's waterproof. You also dont have to lug around the laptop on vacation-it uses SD cards.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a small shoot & share camera? I was researching the Kodak Playsport but the reviews were not so great. We have been to Disney a lot and have pretty much recorded everything. I was looking for a small pocket size one just in case I might need it, nothing fancy or expensive but lightweight. Thanks.

I love my HD Flip. Takes up almost no space in my camera bag and now I always have a good quality HD video camera with me whenever I'm out with my DSLR.
Disclaimer: I work for Flip's parent company but have owned one since before the acquisition.

Is the screen hard to see in bright sunlight? How long is the battery life of the Flip HD?

I have the JVC GM-FMI.It has 90 minute run time when the battery is charged up,it depends how much record time with the SD card you use.I can get +2.5 hours of record time with a 16 gb card.It also takes 5mp stills and the HD video is tack sharp and it has image stablization for the video.

Good topic!
Do these make fairly good DVDs? I would be interested just because of the size and weight, if it did. Not interested in the use for sharing on FB or U-tube.

I have a Kodak Zi8, I really like mine. its good for what it is: a small vid cam that I can slip into my camera bag and not take up weight or space.
It will not take the place of a regular sized video cam though.
For me two main pro's of the Zi8 is:
1) Removable media, it uses an SD card. So if you fill it up on a long trip you can replace the card with a new one.
2)..THIS is the big reason I like the Zi8.... it has an option for 60 frames per second. IMO this is a must for any fast action capture.
Here are some samples I have of the ZI8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRhxi460BSw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFXLAfVt-ys
Now the cons of this type of camera not just the Zi8, image stabilization is electronic not optical. With this option turned on, you eat up the battery quite fast. With the ZI8 you can also swap out batteries when one dies.

Disadvantages of the Flip, specifically.
Memory cannot be changed. No one in town can burn a DVD for you. Therefore you must bring your laptop on vacation in order to shoot more than the camcorder holds.
Some models: Batteries cannot be changed. Even rechargeable batteries wear out, and the shooting time between charges goes down as a result.
