I've recentlly heard about a restaurant called Le Coq Au Vin in Orlando. Has anyone tried it? If so, what did you think?

Never heard of it, they have a website if you have not seen it, gives you menu and prices. http://www.lecoqauvinrestaurant.com/

Thanks, Wayne. I had looked at the website and the prices seem reasonable to me for an upscale restaurant. Was just wondering if any of our fellow DIS'ers had been, as I hadn't heard of it before.

Why not posting on the main restaurant forum, Julie? I'm sure some locals will know of it?!

I thought that forum was just for Disney dining.

We've never been, but it's been on our radar for years because it's slated as being one of the best restaurants around. It scores very highly in Zagat and regularly features in the Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards. Last year, in the French category, it won both the readers' and critic's awards. That rarely happens - the Sentinel's Dining Critic, Scott Joseph, and its readers seldom agree. This is what Scott Joseph had to say:
"Isn't it great that Darden hasn't developed a French concept. Le Rouge Escargot, perhaps? Even if there were a chain in the running, it would meet its Waterloo with Le Coq au Vin. Nothing else was even close, although some readers wanted to recognize Chez Vincent, Chefs de France, Cafe de France and Paris-Bistro, all fine restaurants in a tough category."
What's more, it also won Scott Joseph's Best Overall Restaurant accolade. Praise indeed as the man's very hard to please. (The readers' choice was the Seasons 52 - the Altamonte Springs location, not the one at Sand Lake Road).
"Several readers sided with me in recognizing the continued excellence of Le Coq au Vin. Louis and Magdalena Perrotte and staff, whose restaurant has won the French category hands-down each year, graciously serve some of the finest food Central Florida has to offer. This year, I want to recognize their efforts with the Critic's Choice award for best restaurant. Seasons wins your vote again this year, but not by a huge margin. The Venetian Room, California Grill, Blue Bistro, Hue, Jiko and K Restaurant were some of the other worthy names mentioned. An argument could be made for any one of them, and it's a wonderful thing that each year this and other categories get harder and harder to decide."
Now, all this said, in January this year, a Florida Food Regulations Inspection recommended an emergency order in respect of 39 critiical violations, so it'll be interesting to see how it fares in the foodie awards this year (voting is underway now). The order was complied with in February and a subsequent inspection (in June) revealed an improvement. Inspection details (https://www.myfloridalicense.com/inspectionDates.asp?SID=&id=2208593).
I think the reason we've never made it there is that we're put off by the location. It's a bit of a trek for dinner. We wouldn't want to eat at such a highly acclaimed restaurant and not be able to sample the wine list offerings. I imagine a taxi would be pretty pricey.

We have been earlier this year and thought it was good, but not really that special. It is quite an unusual restaurant (a bit like eating in someone's front room!) but have since been seriously put off from any return visit as they seem to have failed numerous health inspections in the last year or so, and have also picked up several health violations

We have been twice and loved it, especially the souffles. sad to hear of the health problems, seemed fine when we went, well worth the effort. Just looked at the health report and nothing there that would put me off, I've seen dodgier McDonalds. Give it a go, it is different and miles away from the standard "Diney Fine Dining", different but just as good , if not better.

Sorry - but 'rodent activity as evidenced by fresh rodent droppings' has definitely put me off!
Think we'll give it a miss.

That was back in January, subsequent inspections suggest many of the problems are solved. If it were really bad it woiuld have been closed down.
But, your decision obviously.
As Simon mentioned, we tried it and thought it was good, but not fantastic. With the health violations, we aren't likely to return, though. Another thing that put me off is, the restrooms are right off the main dining area, and are just one-holers (the kind where one person goes in at a time and it's just like the bathroom in your house), but the door opens right out into the restuarant. It also opens outward, so you can imagine the great big 'whoosh' of bathroom air that comes out with it.
I wasn't that impressed, in spite of whatever awards it may have been given.

Thanks Cleo. Right. That's definite then. It's off our list!
